You Don’t Have To Be Scared of Halloween Costs With These Free Kids’ Events

Halloween doesn’t have to be a one-day celebration.

Let’s make the most of those kids’ costumes, shall we?

Several retail chains across the nation are hosting children’s events for the spookiest holiday of the year. They’re free entertainment for the little ones, which makes it a win-win for parents and kiddos alike.

1. Disney Store

Saturdays in October just got a lot more magical. The Disney Store will host its Haunted Halloween Party for kids 3 to 12. Partygoers will go home with free light-up Mickey Mouse pumpkin wristbands.

When: Oct. 20 and 27 at 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Be sure to: Register in advance. Party attendance is limited to the first 20 children who RVSP for each time slot. Contact your local store to reserve your spot. Outlet locations won’t be hosting the Halloween events.

2. Bass Pro Shops

This outdoor recreation retailer will host eight days of free Halloween fun starting Oct. 20. Kids can create crafts, play games, walk in costume parades, take photos with the Peanuts gang and go trick-or-treating.

When: Oct. 20 and 21 from noon to 5 p.m., Oct. 26 from 5 to 7 p.m., Oct. 27 and 28 from noon to 5 p.m., Oct. 29 and 30 from 5 to 7 p.m. and Oct. 31 from 4 to 8 p.m.

Be sure to: Read this post for details on the schedule of events.

3. Michaels

The arts and craft chain will host several Halloween-themed classes this month, but the real treats are the free events. Children have the chance to create gooey slime creations on Oct. 21 and 27. Also on Oct. 27, little crafters can make three holiday-themed art projects — plus get their faces painted.

When: Ultimate Slime Party Oct. 21 from 2 to 4 p.m., Monster Bash Oct. 27 from 10 a.m. to noon and Monster Slime Party Oct. 27 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Be sure to: Register in advance online or by contacting your local Michaels.

4. Target

Target — a favorite retailer of moms everywhere — will host a  “PAW Patrol”-themed Halloween event for kids to party with their favorite pups from Adventure Bay. Enjoy the festivities and stay for a screening of a special episode of the PAW Patrol TV show.

When: Oct. 27 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Be sure to: Bring your kid in costume for trick-or-treating. There will be other giveaways as long as supplies last.

5. Simon Malls and Premium Outlets

Trick-or-treating at a mall is like the G-rated, child-centric version of barhopping for adults — except with there is candy instead of beer and everything is free.

Simon Property Group owns over 200 malls and outlet shopping centers in 37 states and Puerto Rico. Several locations will host Halloween activities for kids this year.

Tyrone Square Mall, my local mall in St. Petersburg, Florida, will host crafts and treat-or-treating on Oct. 31 from 5 to 8 p.m. Some locations will celebrate prior to Halloween. For example, Norfolk Premium Outlets in Norfolk, Virginia, will host trick-or-treating on Oct. 27 from 4 to 7 p.m.

When: Dates and times vary by location.

Be sure to: Contact your nearest Simon property for details.

Bonus: PetSmart

Parents of four-legged fur babies can visit PetSmart Oct. 20 and 21 for the store’s “Who’s Your Boo?” costume parade and Halloween event.

The stores will give out free pet treats and coupons to help you save money during your visit. The first seven guests who arrive at the each location’s event will get a free pet collar safety light.

When: Oct 20 and 21 from noon to 3 p.m.

Be sure to: Dress up your pet for the chance to win a prize.

Credit Card Debt? These 4 Sites Could Help You Pay It Down Faster

So, you have thousands of dollars in credit card debt, and the burden of paying off all that — and interest — is gobbling up your income.

Instead of financially treading water making minimum payments and paying maximum interest, make the smart move, and take out a debt consolidation loan. It’s a personal loan, usually at a lower interest rate that you can use to pay off your high-interest credit cards.

In the long term, you can save a ton of money, but first you have to shop around for a loan.

Sound difficult? It doesn’t have to be. Instead of spending hours scouring the internet, you can go window-shopping at an online marketplace that’ll help pinpoint the best loan for you.

We recommend you try more than one site and see what kind of results you get. Heck, try them all if you want. It won’t take long, and you have nothing to lose: Seeing your options won’t cost you anything, and it won’t hurt your credit score.

4 Marketplaces for a Credit Card Debt Consolidation Loan

To start, you’ll need to know your credit score, but that’s super easy. Just sign up for Credit Sesame, a free credit-monitoring service that helps you keep track of your credit. It’ll immediately show you your credit score, and it’ll offer you personalized tips to better manage your credit.

Here are four different options for places to find a loan online. At the end of this article, you’ll find a chart comparing them at a glance.

Credible

Credible is a one-stop shopping place where you can compare rates side-by-side from multiple lenders who are competing against each other for your business.

It allows you to compare quotes from seven different lenders: Avant, Best Egg, Freedomplus, Lending Club, Payoff, Prosper and Upstart.

Through Credible, you can borrow $ 1,000 to $ 50,000 with a loan term of two to five years, at interest rates ranging from 4.99% to 35.99%. The interest rates you’re offered will depend on your individual credit profile.

Credible is best for borrowers who have good credit scores and just want to consolidate their debt. It requires you to have a credit score of at least 680.

Even Financial

Compared to Credible, Even Financial allows you to borrow more money and borrow it for a longer period of time — if that’s what you want to do.

You can borrow up to $ 100,000 and spend up to seven years paying it back. That’s more money and time than you can get from any of these other three lending marketplaces.

Even’s lending partners include Avant, Best Egg, Freedomplus, Lending Club, LendingPoint, LightStream, Payoff, Prosper, SoFi and Upgrade.

You’ll need a credit score of at least 580. Interest rates range from 4.99% to 35.99%.

Lendvious

Lendvious is the newest of these four online loan websites.

Depending on your credit score and how much you want to borrow, you’ll immediately get offers from up to 10 lenders. You can borrow up to $ 50,000 with no collateral required.

Different lenders are looking for minimum credit scores ranging from 560 to 650. The company’s lending partners include Avant, Best Egg, Freedomplus, LendingPoint, Lending Club, Marcus, OneMain Financial, Prosper and Upgrade.

Interest rates range from 4.99% to 35.99%.

If your credit isn’t great, Lendvious might be your best option.

Upstart

Unlike those others, Upstart is a lending platform that manages the process from pre-approval through servicing your loan.

Founded by ex-Googlers, Upstart is a lending platform that’s striving to change the personal loan game. Rather than solely focusing on your credit score to determine your borrowing power, it looks at other factors, too, including your education and employment history.

Upstart tends to be especially helpful for recent grads, who have a short credit history and a mound of debt.

Many lenders judge consumers based only on their credit history. But Upstart believes this leaves out an entire segment of the population — even though they’re totally qualified.

When it comes to the length of the loan, Upstart offers three options: three, five or seven years. The company says its average three-year loan has a 16% interest rate*, with 36 monthly payments of $ 35 per $ 1,000 borrowed.

Comparing Your Options One More Time

Seeing your quotes from each of these platforms takes 5 minutes, tops, so you can easily try out more than one. Each conducts a soft inquiry on your credit, meaning it won’t affect your credit score at all.

Once you actually apply for a loan, the lender will perform a hard inquiry on your credit, which will ding your credit temporarily.

Here’s the chart we promised you:

  Credible Even Financial Lendvious Upstart
Interest rate 4.99% to 35.99% 4.99% to 35.99% 4.99% to 35.99% 8.92% to 29.99%
Term Two to five years Two to seven years One to five years Three or five years
Loan amount $ 1,000 to $ 50,000 $ 1,000 to $ 100,000 $ 1,000 to $ 50,000 $ 1,000 to $ 50, 000
Minimum credit score 680 580 560 620

*The average three-year loan offered across all lenders using the Upstart Platform will have an APR of 20% and 36 monthly payments of $ 35 per $ 1,000 borrowed. There is no down payment and no prepayment penalty. Average APR is calculated based on three-year rates offered in the last one month. Your APR will be determined based on your credit, income and certain other information provided in your loan application. Not all applicants will be approved.

All loans are made by Cross River Bank, an FDIC insured New Jersey state chartered commercial bank, equal housing lender.

‘You Ain’t Got These:’ Lena Waithe To Produce New Series on Sneaker Culture

The sneaker industry has grown rapidly. The global athletic footwear market is projected to reach a whopping $ 95 billion by 2025, according to a 2018 report by Grand View Research Inc. The underground resale market is also very profitable and is currently valued at over $ 1 billion, according to Business Insider. Oftentimes, limited releases from sneaker conglomerates like Nike or Adidas and endorsements from popular rappers will increase the value of sneakers by double or even triple their resale amount. Meanwhile, sneaker reselling apps like StockX and the Goat allow sneakerheads to resell their sneakers to make extra cash.

Lena Waithe, a producer, actress, and screenwriter best known for co-writing the Netflix series Master of None and creating the Showtime series The Chi, will take a deep dive into the sneaker business and culture in a new unscripted series titled You Ain’t Got These. Waithe, a professed sneakerhead who owns over 100 pairs herself, aims to explore how sneaker culture influences class, gender, race, and politics, reports Vogue. Waithe will also highlight the addictive personalities of the people who do everything from entering raffles, using sneaker bots, to camping outside of stores for hours just to get their hands on a signature pair of sneakers.

Regarding the new project, executive producer Andrew Fried told The Hollywood Reporter that he is thrilled to be collaborating with Waithe. “She is a singular creative voice of her generation, and her passion for this subject is infectious,” he said.

There is no official release date for this upcoming series but if any of Waithe’s past projects are telling, fans can be assured that she will give a raw and introspective look into this industry. She will also provide a refreshing voice to women sneakerheads, an overlooked sub-culture that has been around for years.

Check Out These Hidden Gems at Your Local Library That Don’t Cost Anything

It probably comes as no surprise that, as a writer, I love the library.

The best part about all this is they don’t cost a thing — and you can save hundreds of dollars.

Take Full Advantage of Your Library Card

Did you know some libraries lend cake pans? Others lend microscopes and musical instruments.

This post on nine unusual things you can borrow from public libraries will have you asking your librarian for a lot more than just book recommendations.

There’s an App for That

Sometimes you don’t even have to set foot in your library to gain access to books, magazines, movies and other media.

Your library may partner with apps like Hoopla, which offers digital access to music and TV shows in addition to your favorite ebooks and audiobooks.

Check out this post for other apps that might be available for library card holders.

Revamp Your Career at Your Local Library

Looking for a new job can be stressful, but the quiet environment of a library might be the perfect place to get a little focus.

These Countries Pose the Biggest Threat to U.S. National Security, Says Kissinger Associates CEO

Since the Cold War ended, U.S. national security has focused on issues like terrorism and climate change rather than conflict with other countries, says Jami Miscik, CEO of geopolitical consulting firm Kissinger Associates.

But she said that trend is now reversing, with Russia and China returning to the lead the list of national security risks. Of course, Russia is alleged to have interfered in the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign while China and the U.S. are engaged in a trade war that is expected to intensify.

Miscik, speaking at Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit on Wednesday in Laguna Niguel, Calif., also named Brazil as a potential hot spot because of its upcoming elections that could put a more extreme far-right government in power. Meanwhile, in Iran, more extreme leaders may be coming into power because the economic prosperity promised by moderate politicians after the U.S.-Iran Nuclear Deal failed to materialize.

“I don’t think [Western] companies ran in there the way moderates in Iran hoped they would,” Miscik said. “Domestically, the moderates have declined in popularity.”

When it comes to China, she expects that President Donald Trump’s trade war will worsen relations. The longtime safeguard against conflict between the U.S. and China–their financial interdependence–is no longer enough.

“I think the tensions are here. I think they’re likely to grow,” she said before adding: “What we really are interdependent on is trade. If we take that off the table, with sanctions or tariffs, we start to remove the one thing that links us together.”

When asked to assess President Trump on foreign relations, Miscik praised his decision to pull the U.S. out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership and his renegotiation of NAFTA. But in general, she criticized his approach toward America’s allies.

“I do not give him a high grade on making our allies feel comfortable that we will be there for them,” Miscik said.

Miscik said that financial prowess is what allows the U.S. to wield global power. Most transactions come through the American economy at some point, which gives the U.S. government jurisdiction to enforce measures like sanctions on other countries.

“We have economic exceptionalism in our control of the national financial system,” she said, but countries are beginning to explore alternative payment methods in order to avoid the U.S. entirely, which could dilute America’s international influence.

Despite the increased risks from individual nations, functional issues remain a significant threat, from terrorism and rising nationalism to nuclear proliferation, populism, and authoritarianism.

“Climate change has officially become a national security issue,” Miscik said, based on the huge number of Americans living in coastal areas that are in danger of flooding if water levels rise.

She also warned about cybersecurity threats and the new types of attacks that U.S. organizations may need to be prepared to face.

“The one I’m worried about now, especially for businesses, is an attack that manipulates the data,” she said–a tactic that could be used to undermine confidence in American institutions and financial systems.

You Don’t Need a Green Thumb to Easily Grow These 5 Herbs at Home

If you’re anything like me, you love the smell and taste of fresh herbs but seem to kill every plant with the misfortune of living at your house. That’s why I tend to rely on dried herbs and freshly picked herbs when cooking for my family.

But dried herbs just aren’t the same as fresh, and I usually can’t get through an entire pack of freshly cut herbs so end up throwing them away. Since I hate waste and love food, I decided to look at the best way to grow herbs, and which herbs are the easiest to grow.

Plant Care 101

Before you start planting, you need to consider where you’re growing your herbs. The best way to keep them contained is to grow each herb in an individual pot. Growing them this way also allows you to put them outside for some sunlight on a nice day and bring them inside overnight or when it’s cold.

I spoke with Amy Enfield, consumer horticulturist with Scotts Miracle-Gro, to get some tips on growing herbs indoors.

Use the Right Pot

Some pots have solid bottoms, but for growing herbs you need to look for pots with drainage holes in the bottom to allow excess water to escape, Enfield says.

Location, Location, Location

If you put your herbs in the darkest corner of the kitchen and leave them to their own devices, they won’t do very well. “Indoor herb plants will require light, water, food and frequent trimming,” she says.

Instead, choose a window that faces south or southwest and gets at least six hours of sunlight. Create a reminder on your phone to check on them often to see if they need anything.

Don’t Overwater

Too little water can be fatal for a plant, but so can too much water .

“When the soil on the top looks dry, simply stick your finger an inch into the soil. If the soil is moist you can wait; if the soil is dry, it is time to water,” recommends Enfield.

Check the soil more often when the weather is hot and dry. This is one area where I fail at growing plants, so I recommend putting the herbs in a location where you’ll easily see them and be reminded to check them. Alternatively, you can write a note or create a reminder on your phone or computer.

Trim and Feed

“Frequent, light trimming of herbs every two to three weeks, regardless of whether you are using them for cooking, will keep your plants compact and growing new leaves,” says Enfield. She recommends never removing more than one-third of the plant at once, and waiting until your herbs measure six inches tall before harvesting them.

“Frequent trimming also keeps your herbs from flowering,” Enfield says. This means more leaves to use in recipes.

Herbs to Grow at Home

Certain types of herbs are easier to grow than others. Here are five simple herbs you can grow at home.

Basil

A woman harvests basil from a plant.
Sharon Steinmann/The Penny Hoarder

Stan Miklis, farmer and degreed horticulturist with 40 years experience growing herbs, works at Caliper Farm to Table. One of his top recommendations for anyone to grow at home is basil.

“[Basil] is absolutely the best for the Italian kitchen and outdoor aroma,” he explains. “[It’s] easy to grow because any loose seedlings will reproduce new plants.”

Basil is typically used in pasta sauces and pizza, but can also be cut up in a salad for an extra pop of flavor, or infused in water with cucumber or strawberry for a refreshing summer drink.

Miklis also recommends Thai basil, which is a fragrant and tasty addition to your garden or kitchen.

“[Thai basil] makes a soothing tea called tulsi,” he says. All you need to grow this herb is soil and water. Additionally, Miklis explains that “a piece of stem placed in a jar of water will sprout new roots,” making it easy to grow new plants to share with friends and family.

Cuban Oregano

Tatyana Rodriguez, botanist and writer for Florence’s Flowers, recommends Cuban oregano as one of the easiest-to-grow herbs.

“Cuban oregano is a very hardy plant [that] likes warmer climates,” she explains. “It doesn’t require that much water [and] prefers full sun, but can also grow in the shade.”

This is one plant that is impossible to overwater. “They tend to grow faster if you keep the soil drenched [and] eventually will look like a bush,” says Rodriguez. You can also easily take a clipping of your Cuban oregano and use it to start a new plant.

Rodriguez mentions numerous health benefits of Cuban oregano, such as treating skin conditions, detoxifying the body, defending against the common cold, easing arthritis pain, stress relief and optimizing digestion.

Citronella

Another easy-to-grow herb recommended by Miklis is citronella. If you live anywhere that mosquitoes thrive, you’ve probably heard of this plant. It’s a main ingredient in mosquito-repellent candles and other remedies.

“[Citronella] grows outside when temperatures are favorable for mosquitoes,” explains Miklis. “[It’s] essential for outdoor living [and] easy to grow in low light.”

Mint

Any gum-chewer knows that there are multiple types of mint, the most popular ones being spearmint and peppermint. Mint is also used in various recipes and is delicious infused in water with lemon (or in a mojito after a long day).

When it comes to growing mint at home, even the most challenged gardener shouldn’t have problems getting it to thrive.

“All [mint varieties] grow so vigorously that they may become problematic,” explains Miklis. “I suggest growing [each one] separately in an elevated container.”

Lemongrass

One of my favorite flavors is lemongrass, especially in Thai dishes. According to Miklis, lemongrass is also a wonderful herb to grow at home.

“[Lemongrass] is a lovely, swaying, tall grass that also releases the essential oil that repels mosquitoes,” he says. “[It’s] easy to grow in a wide variety [of] soils with a lot of water and bright light.”

Growing your own herbs is much cheaper than buying them from the store and you’ll notice a difference in the flavor of fresh herbs over dried or cut ones. Start with these five suggestions and branch out to other herbs as your green thumb develops.

Catherine Hiles loves cooking and eating, so having fresh herbs at home is ideal. Of the herbs mentioned, her favorite is mint, which she loves mixed with lemon and infused in cold water.
