WATCH: These Abortion Stories Show What’s at Stake with Kavanaugh’s Nomination

Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court leaves much hanging in the balance.

Should Kavanaugh be confirmed, the rights of women, people of color, LGBT people and other marginalized communities could be impacted, and the ideological identity of the Court could be shifted for generations to come. His nomination also re-affirms President Trump’s promise to only consider nominees for the nation’s highest bench who would overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 decision legalizing abortion nationwide. If confirmed, Kavanaugh would be the fifth vote on the court needed to reverse the decision. Without Roe, women in nearly half the country could lose abortion access overnight, and the door would be open for states to further restrict access and criminalize patients, providers and clinic staff.

In a new video produced by Center for American Progress, in partnership with our publisher, Feminist Majority Foundation, women from across the country are testifying to show what’s at stake should Kavanaugh be confirmed, telling their own stories of the debilitating barriers that people face when trying to access abortion care and what it was like before abortion care was legal.

We launched our Daring to Remember series after Kavanaugh’s nomination in an effort to make clear how critical abortion access was—and how serious a threat a Court opposed to Roe was to women’s lives. In the weeks since his nomination, we collected and shared stories of women’s lives before Roe and in the years since, as attacks on clinics and patients and attempts to chip away at access have denied its full promise.

The stories our community entrusted to us were heartbreaking and devastating. We cannot and must not go back to a time when women attempted abortions via wire hangers, knitting needles and vitamin overdoses; faced abuse and assault at the hands of back-alley abortionists; crossed borders alone to regain control of their destinies; risked and lost their lives in pursuit of autonomy.

There is no single state where abortion does not have the support of a majority of voters. Across the country, Americans believe that Roe is a fundamental piece of our national fabric, and that it should remain so.

There is no more critical time to remind your lawmakers that you are part of that majority. Call your Senators at (202) 224-3121 and urge them to reject Kavanaugh’s nomination.

These are the most Instagrammable places to go during London Fashion Week

How to be an influencer 101…

Photo: Olivier Degoulange/REX/Shutterstock

London fashion week has officially started which means all manner of things – bad traffic, excellent celebrity spotting and a lot of well-dressed people frequenting the city.

One of the most exciting parts of London fashion week however is the Instagram opportunities, which are endless BTW.

Sure, you might not have invites to the hottest shows in town, but even if you’re not actually attending LFW, you can still get in on the buzz, right?

From cool monochrome cafes and fashion week backdrops, to beautifully tiled floors and pop up presentations, there are plenty of Instagrammable ‘fasshuuun’ opportunities to go around.

So from getting an on-trend coffee to a LFW beauty treatment, here are the most Instagrammable places in London to hang out during fashion week.

Duck and Dry

What’s happening? For blow dries in the capital, there are few places more Instagrammable than Duck and Dry. Marble counters, duck egg blue furnishings, bare-bricked walls and the perfect egg-shaped mirrors to take blow dry selfies and Boomerang videos in.

What to order: A blow dry and a glass of Prosecco, or if you manage to get an invite to a party or show, get yourself a professional updo.

Glow Bar

What’s happening? While this isn’t a London Fashion Week exclusive, plenty of influencers will be hanging out in the new Instagrammable health and beauty shop over the weekend to browse the self-care drinks and take advantage of the Wifi and photographic decor (we’re talking pastel pink furnishings and rich green plants).

What to order: A moon milk – yes, it’s a thing and it’s packed with superfoods. Take your pick from chill, glow, yoni, golden or siren, and be sure to snap it against the marble table.

The Shop at The Bluebird

What’s happening? Covent Garden’s The Shop at The Bluebird has got a pop-up London Fashion Week area. We’re talking vitamin IV drips, rails of Rixo dresses and Bella Freud jumpers to browse, complimentary Kombucha and pop-up agile work stations with every phone charger imaginable. Did we mention the extra strong WiFi?

What to order: A vitamin IV drip and a complimentary bottle of Kombucha.

A post shared by NAC (@nacmayfair) on

NAC Mayfair

What’s happening? NAC is the place to go to for an Instagrammable brunch – and the food lives up to the hype. Expect the fashion crowd to head to NAC this fashion week season – and it’s not just because of the French bistro’s Mayfair location, situated near a lot of the shows. Decor-wise, we’re talking whitewashed bricks, pink backdrops and dark green plush sofas, and to eat, every brunch dish imaginable from churros and french toast to banana pancakes, acai bowls and all kinds of avocado concoctions.

What to order: The banana pancakes of course – they’re the most popular to Instagram and will give you a sugar hit before your day of fashion week oggling.

Saint Aymes

What’s happening? What’s not happening at Saint Aymes? Almost every fashion blogger you’ve ever heard of has had the obligatory Instagram snap on the black and white tiled floor in front of the wisteria-framed cafe. Flower walls, stunning tiles for downwards shoe shots and of course the pastel crockery to laden with whatever Instagrammable food you decide upon.

What to order: A signature unicorn latte – yes there is such a thing as a unicorn latte, and yes, as its name would suggest – it’s Instagrammable AF. Also on the must-try list are the pastel heart-shaped biscuit and the blueberry pancakes.

Farm Girl

What’s happening? Given the central locations of all three Farm Girls, they tend to be an obligatory stop for fashion bloggers and YouTubers – especially given the excellent lighting and photographic coffees. Whether they’re covered in lavender seeds or decorated with pug faces, their lattes might just be the most Instagrammable in history.

What to order: After bracing the cold weather for street style photo opps, we’d recommend a warming chai latte, but the liquid gold latte featuring a pug’s face and the rose petal latte are the most Instagrammable by far.

DryBy

What’s happening? DryBy has just had a revamp, turning it into an Instagrammable glam preparation hub. We’re talking agile working stations, allowing you to work on your laptop during a blow dry. Then head on downstairs for a gel manicure, with specialist technicians offering customised metallic designs and lettering.

What to order: A signature blow dry and a manicure of course.

Sketch London

What’s happening? Sketch has always been one of London’s most Instagrammable eateries, with each room offering different photographic opportunities. Fashion week is no exception, with influencers flocking to Sketch for the ‘gram. The Gallery offers the most photogenic afternoon teas, from its pink plush decor to the zigzag floors and monochrome drawings on the walls and the Glade is best if you feature a lot of greens on your feed. Maybe a trip to both is necessary? Just saying.

What to order: Afternoon tea at the Gallery, and an obligatory visit to the Sketch bathrooms for a photo in front of the iconic pod toilets. Trust us.

Dandelyan

What’s happening? For a post-fashion week cocktail, there are few places more on-trend. The Art Deco inspired decor (that lavender leather sofa), a soundtrack of 70s/ 80s rock mixed with funk and disco, and of course the most Instagrammable cocktail menu around – from the Nemo Old Fashioned and HMS Hi-ball, to the Nitrate Manhattan and Concrete Sazerac.

What to order: For Instagram purposes, the King Pig Sour or the Monkey Puzzle – solely for glass choice, cocktail colour and garnishing.

See you there! And happy Instagramming over fashion week!

You’ll want to get lost in these mysterious forests

There is nothing like a walk through the woods. Birds chirp, the air feels cleaner, and the way that the sun filters through the trees and the leaves is simply divine. Forests have this sublime magical quality about them, and you can feel the magic within flowing out of the ground. That must be the reason that they are so relaxing to walk through! However, not all forests are created equally, with some garnering much more attention than others due to their unique flora and fauna. Here are five incredibly beautiful forests which will take your breath away.

Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park, Madagascar

This forest, located on the Western side of the African island of Madagascar, not only has beautiful jungles replete with lemurs, lizards, and hawks, but also is home to a unique geological formation. Called “Tsingy” (meaning “the place where one can not walk barefoot” in the local Malagasy language), these are giant limestone hills which have been eroded by the wind and the rain so much that the hills are now razor sharp! Because of this, it is nearly impossible to walk there except with special equipment. However, because there are so few humans in the area, the park has seen an explosion in bird and lemur populations!

Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, Costa Rica

This forest is one of the last remaining virgin rainforests in the world. First settled as recently as the 1970’s, the Costa Rican government knew that they had to preserve it for future generations, and to keep the 70,000 tourists who visit the forest every year happy. And happy they are. With over 500 animal species and 2,500 plant species, the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is one of the most bio-diverse placed on the planet. This is helped by the fact that the reserve is actually a cloud forest, meaning that there is some level of cloud cover all day every day across the canopy. If you want to go see this forest, the best way to see it isn’t to hike through it, but to zip line over it!

Hoosier National Forest, Indiana

Designated a national forest back in 1935, this forest has seen 12,000 years of human habitation. The Hoosier National Forest is relatively unknown as it is located in the rolling hills of southern Indiana, but that just makes it all the more intimate. With a collection of hickory, oak, buckeye, and sycamore trees, as well as the fact that so few people go there, this quintessential American forest is one of the nicest and most preserved in the entire nation.

Comprising over 260 miles of hiking paths, creeks, and streams, this immense park is not only easily accessible at any time, it is also completely free to enter.

Dragon’s blood forest, Socotra

Located on the Yemeni island of Socotra, this forest, just like everything else on the island, looks like it came from outer space. The trees which make up this forest are called dragon’s blood trees due to the red sap which comes out of them when the bark is cut.

Due to the fact that these trees are located on a desert island off the coast of the Arabian Peninsula, it’s really nice that these trees are able to provide so much shade. They have an almost umbrella like appearance, with a huge head of leaves at the top being supported by a strong system of branches at the bottom.

Crooked Forest, Poland

Located close to the German border on the Polish side lies the Crooked Forest. And the forest definitely deserves its name. Comprised of several acres, it is not this forest’s size which makes it so compelling.

Instead, it is in fact the strange shape of the trees in the forest. Every single tree is crooked and bent near its base, and nobody’s quite sure how or why. But one thing is for certain – it was done by man. Some prevailing theories are the German tanks bent the saplings in World War Two, or that they were curved in order to be used for wood to build boats.

Not only Coachella: check out these unique festivals from around the world

Festivals are the epitome of culture. They are magical events with one-of-a-kind dancing, colors, enthusiasm, and vibrancy. Here are the 5 most unique festivals around the world.

Saint Patricks Festival, Dublin

Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated annually on March 17th in honor of Saint Patrick, who died on this day. It is a festival for all Irishmen, as well as those who feel Irish within. Saint Patrick would baptize people and rid paganism, which is why the Irish believe that it is because of him that there are no snakes on the island.  During this festival, stores are covered in decorations of green shamrocks, a plant with three leaves that represents this special day.  Everything in this festival is green since it is the national color of Ireland. People wear all green, including costumes and wigs, and carry bagpipes and organize parades full of Irish music.  The celebrations go all day long and there are fireworks throughout. They eat traditional Irish food such as mashed potatoes and corned beef. This is the day all Irishmen wait for all year long.

Night of the Witches, Mexico

If witches and wizards were to have a home, it would without a doubt be in the Mexican town of Catemaco.  A shaman of the area in 1970 thought to host a convention about witchcraft. From then on, hundreds of shamans come every year from all over Mexico to participate in a cleansing ceremony in order to rid them of their negative energies from the previous year.  The streets are full of vendors selling all kinds of healings and magical potions. Sorcerers and spiritualists sell traditional remedies. The festival starts on the first Thursday night in March and continues on for the entire weekend.

Dragon Boat Festival, China

The Dragon Boat festival is also known as the Duanwu Festival.  It has been celebrated in China for over 25,000 years. The Fifth day of the Fifth lunar month marks that start of all of the events. According to a legend, Qu Yuan, a Chinese patriot threw himself into the Mi Lo river to protest the corrupt government. Locals threw rice patties into the river in order to save him from being eaten by fish, which is why a tradition began of eating rice dumplings during this festival.  People also drink realgar wine during this period and dragon boat races. Dragon lanterns light up the city during this festival of fighting off evil spirits and finding peace.

Carnival of Venice, Italy

This carnival goes back all the way to 900 years ago. It was one time of the year where there were no rules. Everyone was free to do as they pleased without feeling bad since they were disguised under a mask. It is celebrated in various ways throughout the cities of Italy, however the most popular is the Carnival of Venice because of its masks.  The people of Venice started wearing masks in the 15th century in order to rid sexual and social differences. Venice today comes alive with its masks, jugglers, bands, entertainers and colorful boats along the canals. This festival makes fairy tales come alive.

Las Fallas, Spain

Las Fallas in one of Spain’s most unique annual festivals. It occurs in Valencia and actually means the fires in Valencian. It originates in the 16th century when the start of spring would be celebrated as a pagan ritual. The goal of this festival is to both make and destroy dolls and puppets made of out wood, cardboard, papier-mache and plaster. They are life like and represent satirical scenes.  These dolls are set on fire at 12 am on the dot. The last ones burnt are awarded prizes. The spectacle of 300 dolls being burnt at the same time is unforgettable.

These 5 cities do not just serve brunch, they are brunch.

Austin, Texas

If you’re in Austin, Texas then you’ll know that Tex-Mex in the morning is totally in the clear.  People in Austin don’t start their weekend mornings without a legendary breakfast taco, stuffed with scrambled eggs, bacon, chorizo, sausage and hot sauce. It’s best enjoyed with a coffee instead of a margarita during brunch. This city seriously know’s what’s up when it comes to brunching.

Sydney, Australia

Although you probably think that Australian breakfast does not go further than vegemite toast, most cafes actually have their own version of a full English breakfast, including eggs, sausage, bacon, mushrooms, and sausage. But Sydney is a city with many international influences and depending on where you decide to brunch, you’ll also find some sweet dishes such as ricotta hotcakes topped with honeycomb butter and banana. You won’t be disappointed.

 Tel Aviv, Israel

Tel Aviv has much more to offer than just sunny beaches and non-stop nightlife, it happens to be one the best cities for brunch. The combination of the laid-back attitude of the locals together with the fresh produce and urban culinary scene makes for an addictive brunching culture within this city.  Here you will find unique Israeli breakfast dishes that are served all day such as Shakshuka, a Mediterranean spicy tomato and egg dish, as well as omelets served with healthy spreads such as tuna, tahini, cheeses, and avocado.

Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town has got you covered when it comes to brunch. They’ve got cafes running 24 hours a day that look like they came right from Los Angeles and bakeries that look like they came straight from Europe. Basically, Cape Town has got it going on. You will find everything your brunch obsession desires while overlooking the sea, from freshly squeezed juices to pear french toast and BLT croissants.

Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo is a city that takes modernisation and technology to the next level. And that’s exactly why going to brunch here is like no other. They’ve got stacked buttermilk pancakes with every flavor and topping you could possibly imagine. Be sure to try the Four Cheese Fondue Pancake at their famous Butter restaurant for a brunch experience you won’t forget.

These Products Help You Hold It Together With a Raging Hangover

Let’s face it: hangovers are the WORST. The night before was so fun, but the next morning? Hateful. The pounding headache and the incredible nausea are bad enough, but what it does to your complexion is just really rude: dullness, dryness, sallow and sunken skin. You look like you feel, and it’s not cute.

That hungover appearance is a result of your body entering survival mode from all the toxins coursing through your system. “Basically, having a hangover is akin to having a bear chasing you when it comes to what happens to your body, particularly your skin,” explains Mona Gohara, M.D., a licensed dermatologist in Danbury, CT. “All that alcohol triggers your body’s stress response into “fight or flight” mode where all the functions that aren’t keeping you alive cease. Once your stress hormones are elevated, blood and hydration are routed to the heart, lungs and eyes, which results in water retention around certain organs — like the eyes — and the tell-tale signs of dehydration in the skin: dry, sullen, sunken skin, lack of color, rough texture and tone.” Also, it can cause acne in those prone to the condition. “Cortisol levels increase as the stress response happens, and cortisol levels drive acne. You’re also sleep deprived, and that also drives cortisol levels up. Both of these things can cause acne to flare up,” Gohara says.

Now that you’re aware of what causes that less-than-stellar appearance after a bender, let’s talk about how to put yourself back together. Gohara says the key words here are “cooling” and “hydrating” — you want to soothe that inflammatory response and replace your moisture loss ASAP. Whether you’ve got a day to recover or a short window of time before you have to be a person in the world again, here are the best beauty product hangover cures — including hair because you have to handle that, too.

Iina Koppinen: Writing and speaking – and thoughts about these

OHMYGOSSIP –  I’ve been sick, the flu for the whole week now! The stubborn one!  When I was getting better – then I had to do some stressful things.. and I was sick again.  And I’ve felt that I’am doing all in a complicated way this week.  And I hate difficulties! So, this week I haven’t been even in my thoughts in a right place at the right time.  Just been hoping that I’ve been in a right place at the wrong time or at the wrong place at the right time, with my thoughts and things had to be done.  I’ve been running around and preparing those upcoming exhibitions.  The whole week I’ve had this Albert Einstein quote in my mind “Everything must be made as simple as possible.  But not simpler.”, because last week I watched one document about him.

Creative work itself is a balanced whole, elements should support each other.  When one detail takes an attention away from the combination- then the work ain’t having the balance, which must have it to be successful.

There are good days and sometimes bad days.  My major work was trying to get distraction and bad feeling from my mind.  Days like these come to us sometimes – challenging days..

I’ve been thinking lately – why I chose to be a blog writer about my visual work, mostly. Maybe one reason – it keeps me confident, when I speak about art.  And it’s relaxing to write – makes things so much easier to express – and writing is also keeping motivation in visual art. I also want to be a better writer.  So, there are couple of good things, why to write, and how it works with me.

It’s a thin line between professional writing and diary- style blog text, this is my opinion.

In any case, good writing is quite simple in it’s structure and interesting combined with information.  There are many kind of texts as there are writers.  Simplicity doesn’t mean to limit things, just opening them up more easy.  I often should remember to rely on that big picture – doesn’t need to explain and open everything.

I use to work mostly alone – sometimes in the long run, the motivation to keep up working is somehow required.  Naturally maintaining will include all aspects of life and minimizing disturbing factors.  It is important to me the working environment is pleasant and clean.  And raising all the good and joyful things on the table, it gives me energy.

photo Iina Koppinen | selfie | 2018

photo Iina Koppinen | espresso and tea with a friend | 2018

I have had a problem – when things go wrong or feel I fail in something, I tend to feel hypersensitive panic and this can have a huge impact on how I feel about myself.  Through personal reflection I began to realize that it wasn’t always the situation that was affecting me but more the way in which I was internalising.  With this keeping in my mind – I decided to turn how I was viewing life’s challenges by seeing them less as obstacles and more like valuable life lessons to help me to learn and grow.  I admit this isn’t the easiest thing to do, but if I can’t change what happens in my life then I can change how respond to it.

This kind simplifying is sometimes difficult, but when I reach it – even in some parts – I notice that there are many things, topics of the days – to achieve a calm, peaceful and a happy day, almost every day.  And doing so, there’s no reason to panic even in those areas of work, which are challenging and perhaps feeling like obstacles.  This digitizing world might confuse our conventional thinking.  I don’t want to be confused or break in pieces whatever I do.  I want always reach my goals.

photo Iina Koppinen | work in progress – new wallpapers | contrast on a wall |2018

Simplicity is also to know who you are, and doing it bravely.  As a concrete example – I’ve been asked why my Instagram account is full of different pictures and photos?  Why there’s not the clear line at the moment.. It doesn’t show only my visual art or who I am as a person – it also reflects how my motivation grows, where ideas come from and how they are ultimately bound up as a visual work.

I know the main topic should be the highlight, and now – almost a year after I started my account, I’am trying to solve, how to make the feed look better, but I hope I can keep in style, which looks myself.

Understanding the emphasizing own strength can only make positive impact!

Have a nice day where ever you are!

Ciao, lovelies

xx

Don’t Miss Out on Potential Awards From These Class Action Lawsuits

A wide variety of categories are covered in this month’s array of class action settlement opportunities.

If you received unwanted phone messages from Art Van Furniture, paid unexpected fees on your lease-to-own vehicle purchase through Ally Financial, or found the grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence where you used Scotts Turf Builder EZ Seed, you could be eligible for some free cash.

Art Van Furniture Telemarketing Phone Calls

If you received a pre-recorded telemarketing call from Art Van Furniture, you could be eligible for a portion of a $ 5.8 million class action settlement.

Art Van Furniture allegedly sent consumers repeated, unwanted phone messages in violation of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA).

Class members include “all individuals and entities who were called by or on behalf of Art Van Furniture through the use of pre-recorded voice technology between May 23, 2013 and July 23, 2018.”

Art Van Furniture admits no wrongdoing, and the potential individual award is to be determined.

Don’t table the decision to submit a claim if you qualify because claims must be submitted by Sept. 26, 2018.

Click here for a claim form and more details.

Business Information Group Consumer Report

If Business Information Group sourced a consumer report on you from TransUnion, you could be eligible for part of a $ 3.3 million settlement.

A class action lawsuit alleges Business Information Group procured consumer reports from TransUnion that were outdated. At least one consumer alleges the information provided to his employer contained incorrect, derogatory comments.

Business Information Group (BIG) denies allegations that it failed to follow reasonable procedures to ensure the accuracy of the consumer reports it keeps and maintains on consumers, but agreed to the class action settlement.

Three different classes with separate timelines qualify for various settlements. The certified settlement classes are:

  • Injunctive Relief Class: Includes U.S. residents who were subject to at least one BIG consumer report sourced from TransUnion from Dec. 17, 2010 to June 28, 2018 and whose report contained a public record.
  • Rule 23(b)(2) Subgroup Class: Includes all Injunctive Relief Class Members who were subject to at least one BIG consumer report dated Dec. 17, 2013 to June 27, 2016, where the consumer report contained a public record (other than a bankruptcy) sourced from TransUnion, and where BIG’s records don’t reflect that the Class Member filed a dispute with BIG about the report.
  • Automatic Payment Class: Includes U.S. residents who were subject to at least one BIG consumer report dated Dec. 17, 2013 to June 27, 2016, where the consumer report contained a public record sourced from TransUnion and where BIG’s records show that the Class Member filed a dispute with BIG about the report.

Potential awards are estimated between $ 56 and $ 500, but members of the Automatic Payment Class might be entitled to more money if they provide proof they suffered damages as a result of the publication of the public record. Potential awards are as follows:

  • Injunctive Relief Class Members are not entitled to compensation; however, they have the right to sue individually for actual or punitive damages related to loss of employment, embarrassment or distress.
  • Rule 23(b)(2) Class Members can submit a claim form to receive a cash payment, which will be distributed pro rata. According to the settlement notice, if 10%of Rule 23(b)(2) Class Members file a claim, they will receive approximately $ 56.
  • Automatic Payment Class Members will be paid according to the number of points they are awarded based on their specific situation. It is estimated that the minimum payment will be approximately $ 500.

Scotts Turf Builder EZ Seed

If you purchased Scotts Turf Builder EZ Seed in California or New York, you could be eligible for a cash payment from a class action lawsuit settlement.

The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company Inc. and The Scotts Company LLC allegedly falsely advertised that Scotts Turf Builder EZ Seed grows grass “50% Thicker with Half the Water” as compared to regular grass seeds. They deny the allegations, but agreed to the settlement to avoid ongoing litigation.

The EZ Seed product entered the marked in 2009, at which time Scotts called it a “revolutionary seeding product” that contained an absorbent material that acted like a sponge, expanding and surrounding seeds with a moist layer to provide them with constant water and nourishment.

The class action lawsuit alleged the product backfired because the absorbent mulch competes with the seeds for what moisture is available and “actually prevents it from growing.”

If your EZ Seed product resulted in the mulch mowing down the moisture that never reached the seeds, you could be eligible for up to $ 90 cash.

Class members of the Scotts EZ Seed settlement include consumers who bought any variety of Scotts EZ Seed including the 50% Thicker Claim in California or New York between Jan. 1, 2009 and Sept. 30, 2014.

Those without proof of purchase will receive a payment of $ 15 or more per package, up to a maximum of $ 45. Class members who provide proof of purchase can claim up to six packages for a total of $ 90.

Babyganics Lotion, Sunscreen, Diapers, Wipes

If you purchased Babyganics baby care products, you could be eligible for a portion of a $ 2.215 million class action settlement from KAS Direct LLC.

The Babyganics organic class action settlement was reached after KAS Direct was accused of falsely advertising that its products were organic and made from “mineral-based ingredients.”

Consumers allege the only thing organic was what their babies supplied in the diapers despite the fact that Babyganics brand lotions, toothpaste, shampoo, diaper rash cream and sunscreen were advertised as organic.

Class members include those who bought certain Babyganics organic products between Sept. 7, 2010 and June 26, 2018 for personal use.

Consumers with proof of purchase will receive a full refund, and those without proof of purchase will receive a partial refund of up to eight covered Babyganics products.

KAS Direct admits no wrongdoing, but will update its packaging and advertising to help consumers determine whether or not the product ingredients are organic.

For details and to submit a claim by the Oct. 29, 2018 deadline, click here.

Medicredit Call Recording

If you were in California and you received a call by Medicredit on your cell phone, you could be eligible for a portion of a $ 5 million class action settlement.

Medicredit allegedly violated California’s Invasion of Privacy Law when it recorded phone calls without consent.

According to California law, all parties on a line must give permission before a call can be legally recorded.

Class members were in the state of California and received a call between June 29, 2014 and Feb. 26, 2015 from either Medicredit or The Outsource Group, which worked on Medicredit’s behalf.

Both companies deny the allegations but agreed to the settlement to avoid ongoing litigation.

The potential award will be distributed pro rata to class members who submit a timely and valid claim form by the Sept. 8, 2018 deadline.

Ally Financial Hidden Auto Leasing Fees

A lease agreement form sets on a desk.

If you leased-to-own a motor vehicle through Ally Financial’s SmartLease Contracts program, you could be eligible for a portion of a $ 19.7 million settlement.

Consumers who decided to purchase the vehicle they had been leasing alleged they were charged extra fees known as “dealer fees” or “documentary fees” that were not listed in the SmartLease Contract and that they never agreed to pay.

The company admits no liability under the terms of the settlement.

Class members include those in the U.S. who paid dealer or documentary fees not included in their SmartLease Contracts between June 4, 2009 and June 18, 2018.

The potential award will be adjusted on a pro rata basis, and the deadline to submit a claim is Jan. 9, 2019.

Click here for a claim form.

Walmart, CVS, Walgreens CoQ-10 Supplements

Lang Pharma Nutrition Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Inc., CVS Pharmacy Inc., Walgreen Company and Meijer Distribution Inc. agreed to a $ 1.3 million settlement regarding allegations their Coenzyme 10 (CoQ-10) supplements were misleadingly labeled as more effective than they were.

The products covered by this CoQ-10 class action settlement include:

  • Walmart’s Equate Clinical Strength High Absorption CoQ-10 100mg
  • CVS/Pharmacy Ultra CoQ-10 100mg
  • CVS/Health Ultra CoQ-10 100 mg
  • CVS/Pharmacy Enhanced Absorption Formula CoQ-10 100 mg
  • CVS/Health Enhanced Absorption Formula CoQ-10 100 mg
  • Walgreens Well at Walgreens CoQ-10 Enhanced Absorption Formula 100 mg
  • Walgreens Well at Walgreens CoQ-10 Enhanced Absorption Formula 200 mg
  • Meijer’s Ultra CoQ-10 100 mg

According to the lawsuit, CoQ-10 is an antioxidant nutrient produced naturally in the heart, liver, kidneys and pancreas. CoQ-10 has proven health benefits, but it is not soluble in water and is poorly soluble in fat.

Even though Lang Pharma and other retailer defendants allegedly advertised their supplements as highly absorbable, plaintiffs claimed lab tests proved otherwise.

Class members of the CoQ-10 settlement include anyone in the U.S. who purchased a CoQ-10 product manufactured by Lang Pharma and sold by CVS, Walmart, Walgreens and Meijer under store brand labels between July 1, 2013 and July 24, 2018.

Those who submit timely, valid claim forms may choose between a $ 3.50 cash payment or a $ 12.50 product credit towards a variety of Lang Pharma products.

Don’t let this settlement opportunity dissolve before you have a chance to cash in.

Click here to submit a claim form by the deadline of Sept. 4, 2018.

Tesla Enhanced Autopilot Feature

Tesla has agreed to a $ 5.4 million settlement regarding allegations the software updates for the Model S “Enhanced Autopilot” feature were delayed, allegedly leading to a dangerous defect.

Class Members include “All U.S. residents who purchased Enhanced Autopilot in connection with their purchase or lease of a Tesla Hardware 2 Model S or Model X vehicle delivered to them on or before September 30, 2017.”

The potential award varies from $ 20 to $ 280, depending on when the Tesla Model S was purchased.

No claim form is needed, but for more information on this settlement click here.

How Porn Made These Women Feel Empowered: ‘It Gave Me a New Sense of Confidence’

Shutterstock

Working in porn impacts how you see yourself, and though at times we can be our own worst critics, performing naked for all the world to see has had a surprisingly positive impact on some female performers, boosting their self-esteem. A number of young women who have found success in the adult industry once struggled with their own body-image issues—hardly surprising given the state of our looks-centric media.

According to reports on global beauty and confidence, 69 percent of women and 65 percent of girls feel “increasing pressures from advertising and media to reach an unrealistic standard of beauty.” Inundated with suggestive marketing on how to improve ourselves, that silent message to women everywhere is coming through loud and clear: don’t be subpar, be better. Even when it’s “body positive,” the marketing toward women focuses on physical appearance. One study done by the Kaiser Foundation found that 56 percent of commercials aimed at female viewers used beauty as product appeal compared to just 3 percent of the television commercials aimed at men.

Whereas mainstream media left some women feeling they couldn’t measure up, they’d never be pretty enough, thin enough or have an ass like Kim Kardashian, working in porn (a stigmatized occupation) had the opposite effect. Their appearance, and the graphic acts they performed, were sexually arousing, so much so in fact that someone was paying a lot of money for it. For some, that alone was validating. Others discovered a renewed sense of body confidence amongst consumers. For every body type and flaw, there’s a niche and adoring (paying) fans.

Replace your summer travel destinations with these less-frequented locations

Summer vacation is something many of us look forward to each year. It makes all of the hard work during the year worth it to be able to go and explore some of the world. Lots of us will check out many of the world’s biggest hotspots. Places like Rome, Cairo, and Paris are destinations that millions of people head to each year, and in the summer it can get pretty busy as every man, woman, and child seems to have chosen to visit the same place as you. We have a few lesser-known alternative locations to suggest instead of visiting the mega-packed tourism hotspots.

Granada instead of Barcelona

Barcelona seems like a city that is one of a kind. The laid-back atmosphere combined with the modern conveniences a huge city can offer is a nice mix and keeps people coming back year on year. Granada in southern Spain is basically Barcelona, but without the insane crowds of people. You can still experience amazing architecture, and there are plenty of food markets for you to leave the city feeling quite full in the belly. This city is frequently overlooked by many foreign tourists who flock instead to Barcelona, but Granada offers just as much without the hoards of people.

Ljubljana instead of Venice.

Venice in Italy is a world-famous tourist destination. The streets of water and romantic bridges bring many people to the Italian city, almost losing that sense of an intimate retreat as there are about another thousand couples all doing the same thing. Instead of Venice try Ljubljana, the capital of the European country, Slovenia. Ljubljana can offer plenty of rivers and romantic boat trips as well as plenty of gothic architecture to help transport you back in time. You won’t find swathes of people crammed into the streets like you would in Venice, but you will still get a wonderfully romantic experience in this old city.

French Riviera instead of Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik has seen its levels of tourism increase greatly in recent times. Many of the scenes in the fantasy TV show Game of Thrones were filmed there, which opened people’s eyes to how beautiful this historic city is. As more and more people head there each year, it has quickly become an overcrowded summer destination. So, where to go instead? Try heading to the French Riviera, as you will get the same historical feeling but across many locations. That means that tourists are not all condensed into just one place, allowing you to enjoy the Mediterranean coast at your own pace. There are many towns along the coastline, including the Principality of Monaco, Cannes, and Nice that will offer the same vibe as Dubrovnik.

Choquequirao instead of Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu in Peru is one of the most amazing places to visit in the world. At the top of the mountain are the remains of an ancient civilization, the Incas. Unfortunately, because it is so interesting there are more and more people heading there each year. That causes it to be overpopulated with tourists who often leave behind huge messes that have to be cleared by locals. Another well-preserved site belonging to the Incas can be found at Choquequirao, also in Peru. You’ll challenge yourself with a more difficult trek, but your reward will be practically untouched ruins without the huge numbers of tourists getting in the way.

It is important to see many of the most amazing places in the world, just to say that you’ve been there and done it. The consequence of heading to the world’s best-known tourist destinations is dealing with the large number of people also visiting. If you want a bit of culture but are sick of being bothered by people on vacation, try these lesser-known alternatives to the world’s favorite travel destinations.

Google announced something fun today: It’s brought a feature from Allo, a sticker pack comprised of user avatars generated from selfies, over to both the iOS and Android versions of its Gboard keyboard app. The launch of the feature starting today means you can snap a selfie and then bring that into the Gboard app, which will use machine learning to customize it into a fun illustrated sticker pack.

In some background material about the new feature, Google says that a combination of machine learning, neural networks and artist illustrations means that there are more than a quadrillion possible designs for the new “Mini” stickers. “We believe that you have more than one side to your personality, so we have two Mini styles: Bold and Sweet. Keep an Eye on Your Child’s Backpack – Heed these Safety Tips

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 14,000 children are treated annually for backpack-related injuries.

Eleonora Kleyman, MD, a pediatrician at Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles Medical Center, encourages parents to pay special attention when choosing backpacks for youths.

Backpacks that are worn incorrectly, not fitted properly or are too heavy, can cause backaches, shoulder pain, poor posture and neck injuries.

A full backpack should never weigh more than 10 to 15 percent of a child’s body weight. To put this in perspective, if a child weighs 75 pounds, his or her backpack should weigh no more than 11 pounds.

Dr. Kleyman suggests these additional tips:

  • Fit the backpack closely to the body, resting it in the middle of the back.
  • Don’t let the backpack sag. Avoid it falling more than 4 inches below the waistline.
  • Place heavier items closest to the center of the back.

Last minute tip on rolling backpacks:

Although some parents may be tempted to purchase a rolling backpack, users tend to overload their rolling backpacks and if the pack has to be lifted continuously, it can cause wrist and/or shoulder strain.

These are the 4 designer shoe brands to invest in for AW18

We’ve already sorted you out with which designer handbags you need to be investing in for autumn/winter, so now it’s time to look at shoes (‘Too many women think that they are unimportant, but the real proof of an elegant woman is what is on her feet’ said Christian Dior).

And while we know who the big players were last season (Saint Laurent thigh-high boots, Ganni cowboy boots, pretty much anything Balenciaga etc), we’re keen to know which niche brands we need to snap up before they get too big – and sell out.

We asked the experts at Moda Operandi to share the designers they’re backing for AW18.

A by Anabelle

Shop now: A By Anabelle Jardin Majorelle Amor Pump for £630 from Moda Operandi

Milan-based designer Anabelle Tsitsin is from Israel, and she launched her brand in 2016. They’re super fun party shoes, with details that include a heart Swarovski buckle and Eiffel Tower heel. Our favorite style: #118 the Jardin Majorelle, inspired by Saint-Laurent’s garden in Morocco.

Saptodjojokartiko

Shop now: Saptodjojokartiko Magani Bow Lambskin And Velvet Mule for £340 from Moda Operandi

This is huge in Indonesia, and launching exclusively on Moda Operandi. The designer’s known for his embellishments and soft palette, and he’s all about the flat mule – look out for the Fabergé egg-inspired ones.
Stella Luna

The brand is hige in Asia. The pricepoint is sharp, with pieces that are modern and chic. Our favorite is the buckle slide that’s rendered in satin for upper, and canvas for the insole/sole. The brand’s creative director is Capucine Safyurtlu, was a former French Voguette.

Neous

Shop now: Neous Calanthe Mule for £520 from Moda Operandi

London-based Neous are quickly making a name for themselves thanks to their beautiful paired back shoes and sculptured heels (creative directors Alan Buanne and Vanissa Antonious are inspired by architecture and art).

N0.21

Shop now: N°21 Billy White Sneakers for £475 from Moda Operandi

The lucky number and birthday of designer Alessandro Dell’Acqua, N°21 is all about balancing men’s tailoring with ultra feminine details, so expect the unexpected. Think glitter kitten heels adorned with bows and chunky dad trainers.

Tired of Drinking IPA? Then Try One of These New IPAs

No matter if you call it “West Coast,” “Black,” “Belgian,” “Double,” “Imperial,” “White,” “Session” or just plain-old “India Pale Ale,” sales of all kinds of IPA beer have exploded over the last 15 years.

And seemingly a new type of IPA seems to pop up every four to six months. That way if you’re feeling IPA’d out, maybe what you need is a…um…new IPA. Brewers across the country are standing by to help you.

IPA has sailed far from its 19th century roots, when it was brewed in England for export to colonial India. (It was made with an extra dose of hops, which ensured it was drinkable after a long voyage.) The beer was picked up by American craft brewers in the 1980s, and quickly became a staple and signature of the U.S. Traditionally, IPA was a gold-to-amber beer full of hop bitterness, and a good amount of hop aromas, including pine, citrus peel and grass.

Meet MOOCS: These Online Certifications Will Help You With Your Soft Skills

The acronym might sound like the name of your aunt’s old dachshund, but MOOCs (massive open online courses) are having a huge impact on continuous learning.

Right now, you can register for a course in computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology or in a philosophy course from Harvard University. You can also enroll in classes about video games and sock knitting — all for free. Yeah, really.

The right MOOCs can lend your career a competitive edge — but where should you start?

It seems every time I log into LinkedIn, I drown in the advice from different career experts. Today, I’m urged to learn mobile app development. Tomorrow might be “JK not mobile app dev, but I PROMISE you should learn business-to-business marketing.”

I’m all for continuous learning, but an early career journalist doesn’t need to take a B2B sales seminar (thanks anyway, Carol from LinkedIn.)

“[Hard skills] are always going to change if they’re overly technical,” said Ben Brooks, CEO of Pilot, a New York-based career improvement company.

But what about those universal soft skills? Below I’ve compiled some tried-and-true soft skills with Brooks’ help. They’re important to master, in high demand and applicable to any industry.

I’ve paired each soft skill with a related MOOC, and each MOOC has a certification available. Once you’ve mastered each skill, don’t just throw a few new bullet points on your resume and move on. Attach the certification to your LinkedIn profile.

“At the end of the day, people look at your resume for about seven seconds,” Brooks said. LinkedIn or your online portfolio is so much more important than a resume.

These MOOC certifications aren’t only useful on the job hunt. They’re valuable in current jobs and overall career development, too. That’s because certifications show employers initiative and ambition, according to Robin Colner, who is on the faculty at Fordham University’s School of Professional and Continuing Studies, where she leads her own certification program.

“It shows a desire and an understanding of the marketplace, which every employer wants,” Colner said.

The Basics of MOOCs

Before we get started, here’s a primer:

  • Each course is 100% online and can be completed at your own pace.
  • After enrolling, you’ll be placed into a group with other classmates and assigned a teaching assistant for additional guidance
  • With the exception of Duolingo, which is less a class and more a collection of gamified study materials, the courses have suggested start dates and syllabi to keep you on track.
  • Course materials are typically broken up into weekly sections. Take notes because each section has a quiz at the end.
  • Don’t sweat it if you need to take extra time. There’s no penalty.

While the classes are free to take, the certifications range from free to $ 150. But don’t worry if you lack the cash: The MOOC providers on this list all provide financial aid options. Most certificates will end up being free after financial aid; some will be discounted up to 90%.

MOOCs That Teach Important Soft Skills

Emotional Intelligence

Taught by the expert faculty of the University of California, Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center, “Empathy and Emotional Intelligence at Work” is all about building trust, cooperation, empathy and conflict resolution skills.

Combined, these skills make up one’s emotional intelligence, or “EQ.” And it’s safe to say that the labor force could use a higher EQ.

But it’s not just about being a better co-worker. A higher EQ can also help you learn more about yourself by increasing self-awareness and stress management.

Course: Empathy and Emotional Intelligence at Work

Provider: edX

Estimated completion time: eight hours

Bragging rights: course certificate

Multicultural Literacy

As diversity in the workplace changes, so does its social dynamic. Working in a multicultural environment may sound easy or intuitive. In fact, people of color make up over one-third of the workforce, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. So most workers are likely part of diverse organizations already.

Just being in a diverse environment doesn’t mean you have the proper skills to navigate it, though. It requires a lot of self-awareness and effort.

Experts on diversity and multiculturalism lead “Cross-Cultural Competency,” a course from the University of West Florida’s Innovation Institute. This course tackles issues that crop up in the workplace due to cultural differences and gives learners the tools to solve those problems through shared cultural understanding.

Course: Cross-Cultural Competency

Provider: Canvas

Estimated completion time: 10 to 15 hours

Bragging rights: course badge

Storytelling and Communication

This one might seem like a “duh” choice to some. Storytelling is in our DNA, but not everyone is good at it.

Think of it this way: Even if you’re the most qualified job candidate, not being able to articulate your skills and accomplishments will hold you back professionally.

“A recruiter, or more likely a machine, is going to determine if you’re roughly qualified. That’ll get you an interview but that won’t get you a job,” Brooks said. “It’s all about the stories and narrative you have.”

We tell stories all the time in emails, meetings and presentations. With “Storytelling in the Workplace,” you’ll be able to better sell yourself to employers and also spice up day-to-day workplace communication.

Andrea Hickerson, Director of the School of Communications and Associate Professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology, will teach you how to hone your voice to best connect with various audiences.

Course: Storytelling in the Workplace

Provider: edX

Estimated completion time: 18 to 24 hours

Bragging rights: course certificate

Personal Branding and Social Media Literacy

Figuring out how to use social media is one thing, but leveraging those media platforms to create an online persona that will land you a job is another.

“It’s critical to have a personal brand,” Colner said. “That goes for everyone in business today.”

Through Coursera, The University of Virginia offers “Introduction to Personal Branding,” a course that helps you navigate the cluttered social media world. It helps with everything from crafting a mission statement for your personal brand to maintaining your presence on at least three social media platforms.

Even if personal branding doesn’t appeal to you, holistic social media skills are essential, Colner said.

People may think they know all of what social media entails, “but they’re not getting the full picture,” Colner said. “It’s important to see how all these pieces fit together. That’s what a [certification] program can help with.”

Course: Introduction to Personal Branding

Provider: Coursera

Estimated completion time: 15 to 25 hours

Bragging rights: course certificate

Second Language Learning

Beside the cognitive, spatial, problem-solving and metalinguistic benefits of learning a second language, it can also be super practical. Bilingual workers earn 5% to 20% more than their monolingual counterparts, according to Salary.com.

And as the job market continues to globalize, nothing says “나를 고용해요! (Hire me!)” like second-language skills.

Duolingo, a free platform for language learners, has more than 150 million users worldwide. The website offers courses in Spanish, French, Chinese and many others (even High Valyrian and Klingon). Lessons are broken down into segments using a combination of gamified exercises, discussion questions and leaderboards to keep you motivated.

Course: I suggest Spanish or Korean

Provider: Duolingo

Estimated completion time: learning a language is a lifetime endeavor

Bragging rights: Language certification (in beta)

Night Owl? These 7 Strategies Can Help You Start Your Mornings Off Right

How many alarms do you set to wake up in the morning?

If you said one or two, then you’re doing better than me. Try four separate alarms, and that’s not counting how many times I hit the snooze button. The constant sound of the iPhone marimba jingle at 6:15 a.m. (and usually 6:25 and so on…) is the price I pay for being a night owl.

When others start to wind down in the evening, I get a rush of energy. That’s my time to fold laundry, catch up on podcasts and try to make sense of the timeline hopping going on in “Westworld.”

If I could set my own schedule, I’d stay up until 1 a.m. and wake up around 9 a.m. Unfortunately, the business world doesn’t operate like that. Mornings come hard and fast, leaving me discombobulated as I try to extract as much sleep as I can before rushing out the door to get to work.

Does that sound like you? I tracked down some fellow night owls who shared these seven tips and tricks on how they get up and jump-start their mornings.

Stick to the Plan

Kelli Ordonia, who works as an internal operations supervisor in the residential construction industry, has never been able to go to bed until tomorrow has already started. Years of staying up late reading books, surfing the web and getting chores done have hardwired her to stay up past midnight.

A good morning starts the night before, and Ordonia sticks to a plan to make it happen.

In college, she discovered a Tumblr post that included a checklist on how to make mornings run smoothly, with to-dos to complete before going to bed. She prepares her lunch, lays out her clothes and puts her keys in the same spot.

“I go through it step-by-step in my head and I think, ‘What can I do ahead of time? Can I lay it out so it’ll be easy for me?’” says Ordonia, 28, from Winter Park, Florida. “It also helps me power down before bed.”

Get a Little Help From Your Four-Legged Friends

Night owl Michael Mann plays with his two dogs, Reagan and Theodore. Mann has sought the pups’ help in getting him up in the morning. Aileen Perilla/The Penny Hoarder

For Michael Mann, a enterprise telecommunications account sales manager and life-long night owl, a cell phone alarm isn’t enough to get his morning started. That’s why he gets a little help from his four-legged friends.

When Mann’s alarm goes off, his pet pit bull Reagan licks his face, and his Italian Greyhound Theodore barks until Mann gets out of bed. And if he dares to hit the snooze button, Reagan sits on him until he’s up.

Back in college, Mann would sometimes stay up until  4 a.m. — “because, you know, it was college.” He wanted to find a way to have Reagan help him get up in the morning. So Mann started immediately walking the dog from his room to her bowl to feed her as soon as his alarm went off. After about a month, Reagan got with the program and started helping her owner get going.

“If my alarm goes off, [my dogs] know it’s food time,” says Mann, 24, who lives in Tampa, Florida. “It helps me get up because to feed them, I can’t hit snooze. I have to get on my feet.”

Create Your Own Sunrise

As a night owl who runs her own business, Sacha Brant has the freedom to work when she feels most creative. Brant, the founder and CEO of SassyLasses.com, works late into the night building websites for growing businesses. She likes the schedule — until a client needs her early in the morning.

When Brant has to wake up before dawn to collaborate with clients several time zones ahead, she greets the day with a personal sunrise.

Brant finds sound alarms jarring, leaving her grouchy. So, she kicked her buzzing alarm clock to the curb and bought a light alarm clock. These devices are designed to mimic a sunrise by gradually illuminating over the course of a half-hour before you need to get up. Brant finds sound alarms jarring, leaving her grouchy.

“So if I have to get up at o-dark-thirty and I really, really don’t want to, I will set the [light] alarm,” says Brant, 33, from Kitimat, British Columbia. “By the time it’s getting up to full strength, I’m awake, and I feel like I woke up naturally.”

“Hulk Smash” Some Water

If Sarah Snyder were a superhero, her one weakness would be “brain fog,” that groggy feeling that causes a lack of focus that can linger throughout the morning.

Battling brain fog makes it harder for 36-year-old Snyder of Austin, Texas, to run her public relations company, Powerful Approach. She obliterates brain fog by gulping from a cup featuring her favorite superhero — The Incredible Hulk.

Snyder chugs 32 ounces of water from her Hulk cup each morning after brushing her teeth. Twenty ounces is not enough, she says, and anything more than 32 is too much.

“It helps clear my brain, helps get me going and helps jump-start the day,” Snyder says. “It kind of shocks you awake a little bit, so that has been super helpful to me.”

Simplify Your Wardrobe

Ordonia lays out her outfit for the next day. Aileen Perilla/The Penny Hoarder

One of the most significant time-wasters when getting ready for work is deciding what to wear. Even if you lay out your clothes the night before, it still takes time finding all the pieces that make up your ensemble. Ordonia figured out that the best way to speed up her routine was to simplify her options.

“I’ve essentially made a uniform for myself,” she says. Each night, she chooses one of her “six or seven” company polo shirts. (She does her makeup the same way each morning, too.)  Never having to spend time choosing what to wear helps get her out the door on time.

The Power of Positive Thinking

More than six months ago, Snyder decided to try something different with her evening and morning routines. Instead of going to bed dreading to wake up, she started to consider the positives of her upcoming day.

Each night, she uses an app to record herself saying personal affirmations. She also reads from a gratitude list. In the morning, Snyder re-reads the list and listens to her affirmations — all so she can look forward to the exciting day ahead.

She recites phrases like “Today has many wonderful things I can accomplish” and “I’m a positive person.” The practice has yielded results.

“A lot of times I’ll text my friends in the morning and they’ve noticed that I’m more cheerful and energetic,” she says. “I have noticed that it’s significantly easier for me to come straight in [in] the morning and get my work done.”

If All Else Fails, Use Hot Sauce

Mann relaxes with his wife Kelsey Jones and his dogs Reagan and Theodore before going to bed. Aileen Perilla/The Penny Hoarder

If light alarms, pets and affirmations don’t work, Brant suggests spicing up your morning. She says drinking hot sauce is one of those “in-a-pinch” strategies that will get you moving — most likely running to the sink for some water.

“If your mouth is on fire, do you think you could go back to sleep?” Brant says. “No, nobody can.”

Her husband is a hot sauce fiend who has several bottles filled with exotic liquids made from peppers ranking high on the Scoville scale.

“I don’t want to start with the hot sauce if I don’t have to,” she says, “but if my lazy buns don’t want to get up and get going, well — happy hot sauce day.”

See these fast-disappearing natural wonders while they’re still around

The intricate workings of the Mother Nature are something many of us take for granted every day. However, we aren’t alone. While we want to explore the world, it looks as though we might have to get moving is we want to see these fast-disappearing natural wonders while they’re still around. Best get booking those tickets!

Great Barrier Reef

Of course, we couldn’t have the list without including the Great Barrier Reef. Found in Australia, this ecosystem stretches over 1,200 miles and consists of some of the most breathtaking sights in the world. Sadly, global warming means that 93% of the reef has been killed off already. If that wasn’t enough to scare you, it’s thought the reef might not even exist at all by 2030 if people continue the way we are.

Antarctic Peninsula

This is the northernmost part of Antarctica. Here, the ice covers up many Arctic islands that have remained hidden for so long. Already, 40% of the ice has melted. Although the melting ice will make it easier to explore these unknown lands, it is essential for many ecosystems to survive such as whales, seals, and penguins. We could soon be waving goodbye to some of these creatures if we aren’t careful.

Joshua Tree National Park

Hidden in California is this national park filled with Joshua trees. However, The Golden State has been all over the news in the last few years thanks to the many droughts from the passing summers. The desert would once receive five inches of rainfall. Now, they are getting less than one. Unfortunately, Joshua trees are struggling to reproduce. If there isn’t a substantial rainfall soon, these trees could quickly begin to fade away.

The Maldives

These are the islands that are on the front of every holiday brochure. Yes, we’re talking about The Maldives. Sadly, it looks as though we might have to take a trip soon if we want to see a slice of paradise for ourselves. The islands are set so low that rising sea levels mean they could soon be lost forever. The president of the country, Mohamed Nasheed, aims to have the country fossil fuel free by 2020. However, if that doesn’t work, they have purchased surrounding land to house their 380,000 inhabitants.

Mount Kilimanjaro Glacier

In Africa lies a mountain that was once one of the biggest challenges for climbers everywhere. However, the mountain is rapidly shrinking thanks to the melting ice cap at the summit. As the ice caps melt, the dark soil underneath is exposed. In turn, this absorbs more heat and causes even more melting. Now, it’s stuck in a never-ending cycle. Unfortunately, over 85% of the glacier is gone. Although they have been on Earth for 10,000 years, it’s believed the ice will be melted within 15 years.

The Dead Sea

Did you know this sea is ten times saltier than any other ocean on the planet? This makes it a massive attraction for tourists thanks to its many health benefits. However, the ‘80s saw many hotels crop up all along the shoreline. These have caused the sea levels to drop by 80 feet – roughly 2 billion gallons every year – as well as losing a third of the sea’s surface. As if that wasn’t enough, major sinkholes are also opening up all along the shoreline and taking even more of the beauty with it. It could be time to book a ticket before it’s gone for good!

The world is a beautiful planet, but it looks as though we might have to work a whole lot harder if we want to keep it looking so stunning. In the meantime, this seems like the perfect chance to see these fast-disappearing natural wonders while they’re still around, you don’t know what you have until it’s gone.

SHOE DEAL UPDATE:

These ‘Soulcalibur’ Warriors Are the Best Thing Since Sliced Head

Transcending history and the world — and several console generations — Soulcalibur VI will continue a tale of soul and swords that began a quarter-of-a-century ago. That said, it’s been on quite a worrying hiatus for fans like us. Soulcalibur V came out in 2012 and made the sort of massive missteps one only sees in a ring out loss.

Be that as it may, six years have passed and we figure newcomers ought to know which souls burn the brightest in the roster. Most of the fighters in this list have been confirmed as returning and any absentees here had best be shoehorned in come launch time, lest the legend of this franchise die an untimely death.

Mitsurugi samurai
Mistrugui fighting in the an ancient Greek-inspired stage. SoulCalibur VI is shaping up to be one of the best looking fighting games ever made.

1. Heishiro Mitsurugi – Token Samurai Guy

Every fighting game needs a stoic Japanese guy — an embodiment of bushido with a bigger headband fetish than Daniel LaRusso (if possible). Street Fighter has Ryu, Virtua Fighter boasts Akira Yuki and Tekken has three generations of crazy-eyebrowed Mishimas. Mitsurugi is the Souls series answer to this archetype and he’s been present and accounted for since 1995’s Soul Edge.

What’s his deal? Mitsy looks a little geriatric in his recent Soulcalibur VI incarnation and is still very much designed to be an approachable all-rounder. Pro players bemoan his predictable, scrub-friendly toolset but the fact is he’s quite lethal at any range in the right hands.

Much like Haohmaru from the Samurai Shodown series, Mitsurugi is meant to resemble legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. You could also argue that his tragic peasant-rags-to-ronin-riches backstory mirrors Kikuchiyo from The Seven Samurai.

Mitsurugi’s hobbies include collecting every sword in the world (except the actual franchise MacGuffin) and almost never putting on a shirt properly. He’s a “one sleeve and leave it” kind of guy.

Taki charges her sword up with electricity. It's an OH&S nightmare.

2. Taki – Demon Huntress of Spandex

Another OG fighter who hails all the way back to this series’ inception, Taki is the kunoichi who loves a good spray-on onesie. The only thing she dislikes more than evil is the comfort and support of common sense chest protection.

What’s her deal? Don’t let the diminutive kodachi blades lull you into a false sense of security. What Taki lacks in steel length she more than makes up for with acrobatic prowess and hyper-mobility. She’s basically Yoda on red cordial. Keep her well at range or you’ll get a bunch of new speed-holes installed.

Apparently Taki’s chosen name wasn’t the devs throwing shade on her fashion sense by making a play on the word “tacky”. It actually means “much rejoicing,” though fans who played Soulcalibur V didn’t rejoice very much when they found her replaced by Natsu, a younger protégé. Thankfully, Project Soul has seen sense and Taki will be back again in Soulcalibur VI.

Talim looks to camera. The single tear she's about to shed for being cut out of the series has yet to be rendered.

3. Talim – Jettisoned Fan Fave

This tonfa-wielding wind-priestess is a weird one. She’s insanely popular with the fanbase but, strangely, we almost never got paired against her in Soulcalibur IV‘s online mode. Something extra weird about Talim: she had no copycat successor, nor a roster spot, in Soulcalibur V. She was just there one day and gone (possibly with the wind) the next.

What’s her deal? The ill-advised idea to bring two nightsticks to a sword fight means Talim isn’t your heavy-hitter of the piece. She’s based around cunning evasion and speedy, pressure-oriented combos that are designed to wrong-foot her opponents.

Though Talim was considered to be Filipina on her debut, she never actually had any realistic features of that racial background. Oddly, fans were quick to demand Project Soul fix her skin tone in Soulcalibur III and yet nobody raised a single eyebrow at her ability to weaponise wind, presumably via chronic flatulence.

A problem has come along and Ivy has decided to whip it. She's whipped it good.

4. Isabella ‘Ivy’ Valentine – Whips it Good

Say “hello” – or murmur another, shorter safe-word – to Ivy, a buxom snake sword exponent who’s been brawling since 1999’s Soulcalibur. She started out life as the illegitimate daughter of franchise antagonist and undead pirate Cervantes de Leon. The apple didn’t fall far from the tree here: Ivy has the evil gene and though she’s no buccaneer she’s arrr-rated in other ways. (Sorry.)

What is the dominatrix? Essentially, Ivy is a zoner who has been equipped with the longest reach weapon in Soulcalibur (a snake sword can shift from a broadsword into a chain whip form). She’s difficult to master, too — her command throws are so tricky to pull off they’ve had Xbox achievements tied to them in the past. So best of luck with that.

Ivy’s been used extensively in promotional material for the series and over the years certain parts of her design were stripped back whilst other facets saw enhancement. That’s about as diplomatic as we can get on this topic, to be honest. Lastly, if you’re wondering why she’s so spry and gravity-resistant at age 50, the answer is: immortality siphoned from a very bad sword. That, or good genetics and Maybelline. One of the two.

Kilik is praying before a match. Praying to rod.

5. Kilik – In Rod He Trusts

Speak softly and carry a big stick: that’s the motto of Kilik. He’s basically the head of staff in the Soulcalibur series — a drubber of faces who twirls a very mean broom handle. Also, this palindromic warrior monk has had a Jedi-padawan relationship with Edge Master (a jack-of-all-styles fighter) over the years.

Why should you put your faith in rod? If you like to keep people frustrated and at distance you should select Kilik (or seek counselling — that’s really unhealthy behaviour). Mind you, this is OG Kilik I’m talking about. Strangely, Project Soul made him a filthy “mimic” character in Soulcalibur V, a random fighting-style copycat with no unique form of his own.

Beyond that cardinal sin of character design, there haven’t been a ton of changes to Kilik over the years. The holy mirror of Dvapara-Yuga (read: the mystical item that keeps him from turning evil) has been shrunk from a bandolier down to a stylish necklace, so that’s nice, functional fashion.

The best recent change is that in Soulcalibur VI he’s no longer a style-less parrot. Kilik is back to sticking with what he knows best (which would be…sticking).

A promo shot advertising the fact that Mitsurugi and Geralt will face off. Oddly, they're not actually facing one another.

Honourable Mentions – Crossover Craziness

Before we tie this off, let’s not discount the power of novelty-factor here. Over the years the Soul franchise has had some cracking one-time visitors, like Spawn, Link, Kratos, Apprentice (Starkiller), Heihachi Mishima, Devil Jin, Darth Vader, Ezio Auditore, and Yoda.

Soulcalibur VI will be no exception. Be sure to get your preorder in to play as the White Wolf himself, Geralt of Rivia. And if you’re listening, Project Souls, we’ll pay good money for a themed stage that has Roach the horse bugged out on the roof of a nearby village hut. Universe authentic.

Trump Has Already Interviewed These 4 Possible Replacements for Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy

President Donald Trump has spoken to four potential replacements for retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, according to people familiar with the matter.

The four, all federal appeals court judges, are Amy Coney Barrett, Brett Kavanaugh, Amul Thapar and Raymond Kethledge, said the people, who were granted anonymity to discuss the interview process. They were the first candidates interviewed for the nomination, which the president said he’ll announce July 9.

Kethledge has impressed those within the White House, the people close to the process said. He was considered for the last Supreme Court vacancy, but didn’t meet with Trump then. On Monday, Trump expressed strongly favorable opinions about him, triggering talk that he’s not a candidate to be ignored.

“I had a very interesting morning,” Trump told reporters at the White House. The “person that is chosen will be outstanding.”

White House Counsel Don McGahn will oversee the nomination and confirmation fight, Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement earlier. Trump said again that he’ll name his nominee on July 9. The White House aims to have Kennedy’s replacement confirmed in time for the court’s next session in October.

Preparation at Bedminster

The president spent the weekend at his Bedminster, New Jersey, golf resort, where he had “extensive” conversations with McGahn about the nomination, an administration official said. He studied up on the backgrounds of potential nominees but didn’t interview anyone in person.

Sanders’s top deputy, Raj Shah, will take a leave from his current role to oversee communications, strategy and “messaging coordination” with allied lawmakers, Sanders said Monday. The director of the White House Office of Public Liaison, Justin Clark, will be in charge of outreach to interest groups and other outside allies.

Trump has said he’s narrowed his search to about five finalists, including two women. Abortion has rapidly emerged as the critical issue in the nomination: Kennedy’s replacement could be a fifth vote to overturn the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision.

Senator Susan Collins, a Maine Republican who supports abortion rights, said Sunday on ABC’s This Week that she wouldn’t support someone who would overturn Roe. Republicans hold 51 seats in the Senate and need at least 50 votes to confirm Trump’s pick.

Another person familiar with the process said Friday the White House was focusing on Kavanaugh, Barrett, Kethledge and Thapar, as well as Thomas Hardiman, another appeals court judge.

When Barrett was confirmed in 2017 for her appellate court judgeship, she drew the support of all Senate Republicans and three Democrats — Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Joe Donnelly of Indiana and Tim Kaine of Virginia.

“Teams of attorneys from the White House Counsel’s Office and Department of Justice are working to ensure the president has all the information he needs to choose his nominee,” Sanders said. “The Department of Justice is fully engaged to support the nomination and confirmation efforts.”

‘Are These People Funny?’ President Trump Offers Reviews of Late-Night TV Hosts at Rally

The back and forth between Jimmy Fallon and President Donald Trump is anything but over.

Following Fallon’s apology for his 2016 interview with the then-Republican candidate, Trump made time during Monday’s campaign rally in West Columbia, S.C. to take another shot at Fallon – and the other hosts of late-night television.

“Did you see Jimmy Fallon?” Trump asked the crowd, who booed at the The Tonight Show host’s name. “Jimmy Fallon… The guy screws up my hair, going back and forth… He was so disappointed to find out it was real. He couldn’t believe it.”

Fallon’s feelings on ruffling Trump’s hair were not lost on Trump himself, who tweeted on Sunday that Jimmy Fallon was “now whimpering to all” about the “famous ‘hair show’” and called on the comedian to “be a man.”

Later that Monday night, Jimmy Fallon responded to Trump’s Twitter barb with a monologue, where he wondered if the President had better things to do than take a swing at him on social media.

After attacking Fallon at the South Carolina rally, which was meant to support Republican Gov. Henry McMaster, Trump continued his tour of other late night hosts that annoy him, doubling down on his thoughts on Stephen Colbert.

“The guy on CBS, what a lowlife. I mean, honestly, are these people funny? I can laugh at myself,” he said after bemoaning the lack of Johnny Carson-level talent on TV.

Trump also worked in a jab at Jimmy Kimmel, saying he said has “no talent.” He ruled out any future appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, where he has also appeared.

“Now I wouldn’t do his show. That guy’s terrible,” he said. But Fallon isn’t completely out of the President’s good graces, as Trump made a point of calling him “a nice guy,” though he did add that “he looks like a lost soul.”

This summer, keep your kids happy with these essential safety tips

by

Laura Falin

posted in Life

Summer is almost here! I can’t wait. Our family is so done with schedules and schoolwork, and we’re ready for some hiking and swimming and other outdoor adventures.

But it’s good to be aware of the risks as well. Not so we can sit at home afraid to go out, but so we can be prepared to handle emergencies if we should have to. I fervently hope we do not.

summer safety tips for babies and children

Sun Safety Tips:

-Sunscreen

The FDA, the Mayo Clinic, and most professionals recommend that babies under 6 months do not wear sunscreen, but instead remain out of the sun. This is especially important between the hours of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. when the sun is at its peak. Be sure to keep your baby in a hat with a wide brim, sunglasses, and sun-protective clothing. All children over 6 months old should wear sunscreen of at least SPF 15 when you go outside. Be sure to reapply often — at least every two hours, and every time after they get out of the water. Also, most people don’t apply enough — be sure to use at least as much sunscreen as would fill a shot glass.

You can find more information on sun safety here.

-Heat

Be sure your babies and young children are also well-protected from heat stroke. Dress them in light, loose-fitting clothing and keep them in the shade as much as possible. Cool the car before taking them anywhere. Breast milk and formula will provide enough hydration for babies, older children should have plenty of water handy while they’re out and about.

We never, ever want to consider the possibility that we might forget a baby in the car, but it does happen. It’s even happened to me (fortunately, only for about 30 seconds, but enough for me to realize that we’re all susceptible). I once heard the suggestion that you take off your shoes and put one (or both) next to your baby’s carseat when you get in the car to drive. This post has some more great suggestions. Also remember to keep cars locked at home to prevent kids from playing inside.

Finally, be sure you don’t make this common mistake — putting a blanket, even a very thin one, over a baby’s stroller to shield him from the sun can cause the inside temperature to rise and your baby to overheat.

You can find information on heat stroke in babies here.

Water safety

-When to take babies in the water

In this BabyCenter article, Dr. Howard Reinstein, a pediatrician and American Academy of Pediatrics spokesman, recommends parents not take babies younger than 2 months in pools, lakes, or other swimming places. Newborns are vulnerable to illness and it’s safer to wait until they’re older. When you do take babies swimming, remember that they’re not as able to regulate their body temperature — watch your baby for signs they’re cold and dry them off when necessary. Also, be sure babies and young children do not drink the water in pools, streams, or wherever you’re swimming.

-Help prevent drownings

An estimated 370 drownings and 5,600 near drownings involving children under 15 occur in pools and spas each year, and 77 percent of those are children under the age of 5. The Life Saver Pool Fence’s Guide to Pool Safety recommends multiple layers of protection for pools — access doors that lock, pool alarms, a pool fence, water survival training for children who are old enough to crawl or walk, and CPR and rescue training for parents who own pools. Parents can buy wearable immersion alarms for their kids to wear, which go off if the child falls into the water.

Also, be sure children can’t climb over any fences using chairs or tables, and be sure doggy doors that would allow access are also blocked. Practice “touch supervision” as well — parents should be within arm’s length of a toddler at all times they’re near water.

We always had our babies and toddlers wear a PFD (personal flotation device) fitted for their size — babies are wiggly and I wanted that extra layer of protection. And even now that our kids are older and my husband and I are good swimmers, everyone wears PFDs when we’re kayaking, paddleboarding, or doing other boating activities. Our other personal rule is that no one swims alone with a baby. If something were to happen to a parent (we hit our head, got a cramp, whatever) I wanted an extra person there to help out.

Check here for more information on water safety.

Tick and Mosquito Bites:

The best way to prevent tick and mosquito bites (and the diseases they carry, such as Lyme disease and West Nile virus) is to make sure the environment around your house isn’t one they like. Keep ticks out by keeping your lawn well-cared for and manicured. Create a tick barrier — a wide strip of wood chips or bark — that separates your lawn from taller grass or brush. Keep deer out of your tick-free zone by putting up a deer fence. Also, ticks get Lyme disease from mice, so eliminate any wood piles or other nooks and crannies where mice like to live. Keep mosquitoes out by eliminating any standing water around your property, including places like flower pots or birdbaths. Make sure you have screens on your windows to keep mosquitoes out of the house.

You can also avoid bites by wearing long sleeves and long pants (I know…exactly what everyone wants to hear in the summer!). Children and adults should use bug spray, but talk to your pediatrician about what kinds of bug spray are for babies and kids, and how old they should be before wearing bug spray.

Inspect kids for ticks when they come inside and remove them immediately with tweezers. And call your pediatrician immediately if your child develops any out-of-the-ordinary reactions, such as a rash, fever, or flu-like symptoms.

Johns Hopkins has more information on ticks here, and the CDC has information on ticks and mosquitoes here.

You probably shouldn’t wear these 7 things as a wedding guest this summer

You probably shouldn’t wear these 7 things as a wedding guest this summer

You probably shouldn’t wear these 7 things as a wedding guest this summer

If you’re dreading purchasing another dress to wear to your eighth wedding this summer, we get you—wedding season is a lot to handle. There’s no shame in re-wearing outfits from one event to another, and you can pretty much wear any dress of your choosing so long that it is appropriate for a wedding. That last part is important, because there are a number of different outfit mishaps that often occur at weddings, the pros say. To ensure you don’t make a fashion misstep, we chatted with four stylists to find out what you should or maybe shouldn’t wear as a guest this summer. Here are their best suggestions on what to avoid.

Anything that even resembles white.

You know the drill—the bride should be the only one wearing white at the wedding. This includes every color that could potentially be considered in the white family, such as cream, bone, ivory, beige, and off-white. The one and only exception to this rule is if the bride and groom are having a “white-themed wedding” and request that their guests wear the hue. Still, even in this case, Ali Levine, celebrity stylist, fashion expert, and TV personality, warns guests never to wear anything that looks like a wedding dress.

Denim anything.

If you’re thinking of pulling a throwback to that iconic Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake denim moment, don’t. “Save your jeans for the backyard BBQ! Jeans are not welcome at a wedding no matter how casual it is,” says Toni Ferrara, a celebrity stylist who’s dressed Kim Kardashian, Matthew McConaughey, and Kate Beckinsale. “It’s just not a fabric that is meant to have a wedding moment.” Make sure your date knows this, too.

Anything too revealing.

Style experts agree that all eyes should be on the bride. “Drawing attention to you in a ‘sexual’ way is disrespectful in my opinion,” says Rayne Parvis, a certified Style Coach, personal stylist, media personality and author of Ultimate Guide to Style: From Drab to Fab!. She recommends staying away from anything too tight, that reveals too much cleavage, or with a completely open back. “A great rule of thumb is to accentuate one body part in a respectful way, not all three; cleavage, legs, and back,” she adds. Mayes agrees, adding, “Not only will your outfit be frowned upon, but you just may fall right out of that extremely plunging neckline.”

Out-of-season hues.

Levine recommends wearing colors that are in-line with the summer season, so keep your orange-, auburn- and maroon-colored gowns in the closet until fall and winter. “Certain colors, fabrics, and aesthetics tell us it’s summer and makes us feel a certain way about that season,” she says. “Do not show up wearing fall colors and heavy fabrics in June, July, or August.”

A dress that matches the wedding colors.

Unless you’re in the wedding party, Parvis warns against intentionally wearing colors to match. “If you’re not a bridesmaid and you show up dazzling in the same color, it will appear you’re trying to be part of the wedding party versus a guest,” she says. “You’ll get questions and confusing looks.”

An oversized hat.

Sure, you hate it when the sun’s in your eyes, but that’s what sunglasses are for. Leave your oversized hats out of the equation when it comes to selecting your wedding attire. “Excessively large hats may block the view of the other guests, especially if you are seated in the front row,” says Ty-Ron Mayes, a celebrity stylist who appeared on America’s Next Top Model. “If you do not want to wear a smaller hat, consider a fascinator. Your sense of style and appropriateness will be well received.”

Anything too casual.

It might be hot, or even a beach-themed wedding, but leave your poolside attire where it belongs. “Unless the bride and groom tells you in the invitation to bring a change of casual clothing, or that it is a casual affair, stay nicely dressed,” says Levine. The same goes for your shoes. “Leave sandals at home—even if they’re beautiful.”

Everyone Is Cheering for These Japanese Soccer Fans Who Cleaned Up the World Cup Stadium

Tuesday’s World Cup match between Japan and Colombia may have gotten a little dirty, but the stadium was left spotless.

Videos on social media show fans equipped with trash bags sweeping through the rows collecting plastic waste left on the stadium grounds.

Internet users praised the Japanese fans for bringing their manners to the pitch.

Japanese audience members earned similar accolades back in 2014 at the World Cup in Brazil, where some were spotted picking up their own trash after the Japanese team lost to the Ivory Coast 2-1.

Donate to these 7 organizations if you want to help separated immigrant families

Nearly 2,000 children have been separated from their families as part of the Trump administration’s “zero-tolerance” policy on immigration. Despite the ridiculous back-and-forth between the president and Congress on who’s to blame, the fact of the matter remains: There are thousands of immigrant children being held in facilities near the border, the conditions of which have been described as “prison-like,” and that is unacceptable.

As you would expect, big nonprofit organizations, like the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), are doing their part to help. In fact, the ACLU filed a national class-action lawsuit on March 9th to challenge the Trump administration’s policy. As Lee Gelernt, deputy director of the ACLU’s Immigrants’ Rights Project, said in a release at the time,

“Whether or not the Trump administration wants to call this a ‘policy,’ it certainly is engaged in a widespread practice of tearing children away from their parents.”

In addition to the ACLU, the Asylum Seeker Advocacy Project (ASAP) is another great organization that’s working hard to prevent wrongful deportations by providing support and emergency legal aid to those seeking asylum.

If the news coming from the border troubles you and you’re inspired to help, making a donation to organizations and activist groups such as the ACLU or ASAP is great. But there are also smaller organizations doing good work right now that don’t get quite as much attention as they should. So here are some other organizations you should also consider donating to.

1. RAICES

The Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES) is a Texas-based nonprofit organization that offers both free and low-cost legal services to immigrant families. As of right now, their main site is down due to “capacity problems.” However, here is a link to their donation page if you want to help support them at this time.

2. The Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights

The Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights works to “promote the best interests of unaccompanied immigrant children.” On May 31st, the Young Center launched a new program that specifically helps families being separated at the border. The Immigrant Child and Family Project is staffed by attorneys who are fighting to protect immigrant families and help change policy. If you want to support their cause, you can donate here.

3. The Florence Project

The Florence Project provides free legal and social services to immigrants who are detained in Arizona. The organization has been working to help immigrant families in Arizona for over 25 years and separated families is an issue they’re familiar with. In an interview with CBS News, Lauren Dasse, the executive director for the Florence Project, said the organization has seen 300 recent cases of family separation in Arizona, with 100 new cases in early June alone. If you want to make a donation to The Florence Project, you can do that here.

4. Neta

Neta is a “Latinx-run progressive media platform” based in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas that’s working hard to inform the public about the immigration situation and bring you the reality of what’s going on at the border. Having the facts is super important, so if you want to support the work of the journalists there, you can donate here.

5. Fuerza Del Valle

The Fuerza Del Valle Workers Center was created to support workers’ rights and immigrant communities in the Rio Grande Valley. On June 20th, they are holding an interfaith prayer and walk in support of keeping immigrant families together. If you want to support them financially, you can donate here.

6. Al Otro Lado

Al Otro Lado is a cross-border legal service for refugees and families separated by deportation in Los Angeles and Tijuana. Ever since news of the crisis at the border hit, the organization has been providing “critical assistance” to immigrants, including infants and unaccompanied minors. If you want to support, you can donate here.

7. Together Rising

Together Rising is another organization that’s helping to provide legal assistance to migrant children who were separated from their parents. If you’re looking to support their work, you can donate here.

Chase is eliminating these big credit card benefits as of August 26

Credit card companies are taking a hatchet to their benefits for customers — and there’s no end in sight, with the latest announcement from one of the nation’s biggest issuers.

RELATED: Discover is eliminating these 5 credit card benefits in 2018

Chase gets ready to eliminate Price Protection and Return Protection

Effective August 26, Chase will no longer offer Price Protection or Return Protection to its customers. Some customers were informed of the change over the weekend.

Price Protection is a beloved benefit that’s available across several card networks. In general, it promises to refund the difference in price between an item you buy and an advertised sale price that may pop up on that same item anytime between 60 and 90 days down the road.

Chase’s competitor Citi announced just days ago that they’d be paring down their proprietary price protection program called Citi Price Rewind.

But Chase is going one step further than Citi did and axing its version of price protection completely.

Also being shut down at Chase is Return Protection, which makes it up to customers if they buy something they’re unhappy with and the merchant refuses to take it back and refund their money. Chase currently offers up to $ 250 for each eligible item with a $ 1,000 annual maximum as part of its current return protection policy — but all you’ll get is a big, fat goose egg come August 26!

Yet as Chase taketh away, the card issuer also giveth. Cardholders of select products such as the Chase Freedom Visa Platinum will have Trip Cancellation/Interruption Insurance added to their card on August 26.

Beginning on that date, the added coverage will provide reimbursement of up to $ 1,500 per person and $ 6,000 per trip for pre-paid, non-refundable passenger fares. To meet the criteria to get the money, your trip must be canceled or cut short by sickness, severe weather or other covered situations.

Money expert Clark Howard has long recommended trip insurance for cruises and for when you’re going to be touring or traveling on a trip that requires prepayment of thousands of dollars.

So on the plus side, Chase’s addition of cancellation/interruption insurance for some customers could negate the need for them to buy third-party trip insurance. Just be sure you read through Chase’s policy carefully to see what it covers and what it excludes before deciding to forego traditional trip insurance you might buy elsewhere.

Get Pippa Middleton’s Parisian Look With These 9 Dresses

Pippa Middleton may not be officially royal like her sister Duchess Kate, but that definitely doesn’t stop her from dressing like a queen. Middleton appeared with her husband James Matthews at the French open tennis match at Roland Garros in Paris on May 27 looking pretty as a princess in a bright red printed wrap dress. She paired the ladylike frock with a very on-trend woven crossbody bag and neutral-toned espadrilles. But perhaps our favorite part of the look was Middleton and her hubby’s matching fedoras.

Because we’re loving this prim and elegant look so much, we rounded up nine dresses so that you can get the same perfectly understated vibe as Middleton, perfect for a warm spring day whether you’re watching a tennis match or lounging around a terrace with friends and a cool glass of rosé.

Survey: These cities are home to the most ‘Bridezillas’

If you’ve ever gotten married or been involved in a big wedding, you know all about the nerves, jitters and general uptight-ness that can consume the bridal party and their families in the months and weeks leading up to the big day.

The term “Bridezilla” was coined to describe a too-be-married woman who gets a little too caught up (some might say obsessed) with making her big day perfect. According to a new survey, they are legion — and they may actually be thriving in the city where you live or one near you.

The survey, conducted by the WE TV network (conveniently home to a reality TV show called Bridezillas), revealed the top 15 media markets where Bridezilla behaviors are most prominent.

These cities have the highest concentration of ‘Bridezillas’

According to a WE TV blog post on the findings, the term “Bridezilla” is about empowerment and taking control of your wedding. So, if you happen to know a bride (or groom) who fits the bill, hopefully they’ll say “I do” to your assessment.

Here are the top 15 “Bridezilla” cities, according to WE TV.

  1. New York City
  2. San Francisco
  3. Detroit
  4. Houston
  5. Tampa
  6. Minneapolis
  7. Philadelphia
  8. Seattle
  9. Dallas
  10. Los Angeles
  11. Atlanta
  12. Chicago
  13. Boston
  14. Washington, D.C.
  15. Phoenix

Money expert Clark Howard’s daughter recently tied the knot herself and — far from a Bridezilla — here’s how she saved a ton of $ $ $ on her wedding.

Other Ways to be Ecofriendly at Lunchtime At Work:

Many restaurants, including office cafeterias, obviously offer reusable plates, cups, and silverware if you’re dining in, but if you live in one of the markets with Just Salad – Chicago, New York, Philadephia – they have reusable bowls for all orders, even takeout.

Other restaurants in Durham, N.C., San Francisco, Portland, Oregon, and Brooklyn are starting to promote reusable take-out containers, as well. In April 2018, the City of Berkeley even proposed a tax on disposable take-out containers.

Finally, if you need to use a straw, consider bringing your own. Many options for stainless steel, silicone, glass, and other reusable materials can be found on Amazon.

If you already use or decide to buy any of these stylish office lunch containers, or if you have other suggestions on what you already use — or if it even matters to you if you lunch bag looks professional or whether you’re still rocking a Fraggle Rock lunchbox you found at a thrift store — let us know what works for you!

These 2 Netflix shows just get us as new moms

by

Laura Falin

posted in Life

Bar none, one of the best inventions for new parents over the past few years has to be all the TV-on-demand services out there.

In the middle of the night when you’re up feeding the baby, or in those precious few minutes after everyone’s in bed for the night, you can now choose from hundreds of shows and movies. And now — lucky us! — there are two shows on Netflix that highlight the new mom experience in a way that resonates amazingly well.

The Letdown is an Australian TV comedy series that premiered on Netflix in April. As I watched the first few episodes, I had to stop myself from shouting, “THIS!! This is what I wanted from Tully! Exactly this!!”

The show stars Alison Bell, also a co-creator and writer, as Audrey Holloway, a mother trying to navigate her first few months of parenthood. She joins a non-judgmental new mothers’ group (that’s actually kinda judgy, in the way these things tend to be) and shows up late and flustered for her first meeting. The show made me laugh out loud at several of the situations she faces — including one where she tries to bargain with a drug dealer when she accidentally parks in his spot after driving a crying baby around all night.

It also made me tear up several times as well. In one scene, she cries into her partner’s shoulder while she lists all the ways she’s a terrible mother. I may have done this last week, and I don’t even have a baby anymore. It tackles Instagram-perfect moms and the hidden challenges they fear they can’t share.

One episode wonderfully shows the tension Audrey feels when she wants to go out with her pre-baby friends, but realizes things have changed irreversibly now that she has a newborn. It’s a perfect blend of snarky, slightly dark comedy and drama that shows the struggles that come with motherhood.

Fair warning: there is plenty of swearing in the show. In fact, one of my favorite running gags is when Audrey forgets herself, curses, and then belatedly covers her 2-month old’s ears as if that might help.

I also recently watched Ali Wong’s Hard-Knock Wife, which was released on Netflix on Mother’s Day. She performs the stand-up while heavily pregnant, and even if it had been a flop (it’s not), watching her do high kicks, squats, and some serious dance moves while walking around the stage for over an hour is impressive in itself. I could barely get off the couch at that stage.

This is Wong’s second comedy special — she filmed Baby Cobra while pregnant with her first child — and she talks about a variety of topics including sex and childbirth (she says those mesh panties we all know so well are “made of the same material they use to package fancy Korean pears in”).

She talks about her emergency c-section and wonders, “Why the f*** did I do all that pushing when there was this perfectly good emergency exit?” She also takes on breastfeeding, saying it made her feel like The Giving Tree. And she addresses the low parenting standards for dads, compared to what moms are expected to do for their babies. It’s funny, and relatable, and very dirty — she may talk about kids but this definitely isn’t something to watch around them.

Both shows are wickedly entertaining…and both might make you feel like finally, in the land of television, someone actually gets how new moms feel.

Do you have any favorite shows right now that perfectly capture the new mom experience?

These are the first set of Love Island 2018 couples and cue our new obsession

IT BEGINS.

ITV

Love Island is back and we’re already cancelling any and all plans. To our friends, lovers, family members, doctors and whoever else may be concerned, we’ve got something more important to do: namely, watch a bunch of beautiful people hook up in a villa. Well, the pilot episode of the new season just aired on ITV2 and the first set of couples have been locked in.

Now that we’re over all that Kem drama and have met the new Love Island 2018 contestants, we’re already invested in the drama.

Love Island 2018 Contestants

love island 2018 couples

ITV

This year’s cast members include Dani Dyer, the daughter of EastEnders’ Danny Dyer, Dr. Alex George, West End performer Samira Mighty and others. There’s another former pop star called Eyal Booker in the line up and here’s hoping there’s another anticlimactic Marcel x Blazin’ Squad reveal on the show with the rest of the villa.

So, who shacked up with who in the first episode? Here’s the gossip…

Love Island 2018 Couples

Niall Aslam and Kendall Rae-Knight

love island 2018 couples

ITV

It was love (or something like it) at first sight for Niall, who was the first boy to be thrown into the lion’s den. Kendall clearly liked what she saw as she stepped forwards and didn’t budge from her choice.

Dr. Alex George and Samira Mighty

ITV

Things got a little awkward for poor Alex and Samira, as they had a pretty rough go of it this episode. To begin with, nobody stepped forwards for the doctor when he stepped out and he wound up choosing Laura (which didn’t last long). He and Samira were then paired together, as she was last on the bench.

Wes Nelson and Laura Anderson

love island 2018 couples

ITV

In the first tense moment of the season, Laura said goodbye to Alex and stepped forwards when Wes came into the picture. The bubbly blonde and kickboxer forced Alex back to the bench when Wes chose her.

Eyal Booker and Hayley Hughes

love island 2018 couples

ITV

It might have been his former pop idol status, but Eyal had the ladies seeing stars when he put his best foot forward. Three women – Dani, Samira and Hayley – all threw their hats in the ring, but it was Hayley who came out on top.

Jack Finchan and Dani Dyer

love island 2018 couples

ITV

Although Samira and Dani both stepped forwards for clean-cut Jack, it was Dani who eventually won him over. Who knows, maybe he’s a low key EastEnders fan?

And then there was Adam…

love island 2018 couples

ITV

Adam Collard arrived at the end of the episode to shake things up a bit and had the boys quaking in their flip flops. The Newcastle-based personal trainer has 24 hours to decide which of the girls he’ll be sweeping off their feet (and away from another contestant), so you’ll have to stay tuned for tonight’s episode…

Dior: From Paris to The World

November 18 – March 3 2019

The Denver Art Museum in Colorado will swing open its doors this November for an exhibition surveying more than 70 years of the House of Dior’s enduring legacy and its global influence. Here, you can expect to see a selection of 150 haute couture dresses, accessories, photographs, archival material and exclusive runway footage. “Artistic interpretation has always been a key factor to the House of Dior’s success in creating a global legacy for the French haute couture house,” explains the exhibition’s curator Florence Muller. “Visitors will witness this through thematic exhibition sections, and will also begin to understand how the Americas contributed to the success of the house over a seven decade period.”

As well as profiling Christian Dior’s own inspirations, the major retrospective will also take a look at the brand’s artistic directors, from Yves Saint Laurent in 1958 to Maria Grazia Chiuri’s vision now. Elsewhere, make sure not to miss the dramatic visual display of the Dior atelier’s exquisite technique — something you won’t get to see anywhere else.

Fashioned from Nature

April 21 – January 27 2019

The future of fashion and our planet are a cause for celebration at the V&A’s new unmissable exhibition spanning over 400 years. There is plenty to see here. From botanical embroidery pieces on show, to stellar earrings made from birds of paradise, the retrospective will take visitors on a journey through the centuries of fashion that have plundered the natural world. Expect to be bought closer to nature: take a walk around and you’ll hear the sound of birdsong as well as other animals in their natural habitat. With our second May bank holiday creeping up quickly, add this must-see exhibition to your weekend plans.

Inside Azzedine Alaia: The Couturier

Until 7 October 2018

On May 10, The Design Museum opened its doors for a must-see exhibition charting the inimitable work of Azzedine Alaia, looking at his journey from sculptor to couturier. From stories of his life and career, to iconic garments spanning back to the 1980s, you can expect an exclusive insight into the designer’s work and life — which was co-curated by the designer himself before his death in November 2017.

Photo: Mark Blower

One of the most anticipated exhibition openings of the year, this retrospective will shine light on the late designer’s signature nipped-in body-con waist, described as “second-skin dressing.” The consummate craftsman understood the female body, moulding clothes to fit the female form — and changed the fashion landscape as we know it. You’ve still got October to see this one so make sure you don’t miss out.

Frida Kahlo: Making Her Self Up

Opening 16 June

Experience Frida Kahlo’s compelling life story through her most intimate personal belongings, on display exclusively at the V&A this summer. The Mexican artist, best known for her self-portraits, was inspired by the nature and artifacts of her homeland. It’s her physical and emotional pain that were often depicted in her works, shining light on a turbulent relationship and a lifetime of suffering (she had over 30 operations across her life). More than 200 of her personal items will be on display at the retrospective, including clothing items, jewellery, makeup used by the artist and a prosthetic leg in a red leather lace-up boot. You’ve got one month until the doors open so why not book your early bird ticket now.

Orla Kiely: A life in Pattern

May 23 – September 23

Next week, The Fashion and Textile Museum will open their doors for the first-ever exhibition dedicated to the designer Orla Kiely. From her first collection of hats shown at London Fashion Week in 1994 to her iconic bag in the mid-sixties, the exhibition will chart the growth and success of the renowned Irish designer.

Drawing on an archive of over 20 years of work, there will be brilliant insights into every area of her work. Margiela/ Galliera, 1989-2009

March 3 – July 15

If there’s one exhibition not to miss before the summer it’s Palais Galliera’s new stand-out retrospective which unpacks the life and work of Martin Margiela. The Belgian designer’s conceptual approach to creating garments is celebrated under the roof of the Galliera, tracing back his career from 1989 to the summer of 2009. He was best known for his technique of deconstructing (he would expose the inside of clothing, leave unfinished parts and embrace pleats and shoulder pads).

Using more than 130 silhouettes, house archives and special installations the curators here take an unprecedented look at the life of the most prolific designer. And with just a Eurostar journey away, there’s no excuse not to hop on a train this weekend to see it for yourself.

Pink: The History of a Punk, Pretty, Powerful Colour

September 7 – January 5 2019

Pink might not be your colour, but at The Fashion Institute of Technology’s new exhibition there is something for everyone. Launching this September, the retrospective will trace back through bright pink dresses from designers including Elsa Schiaparelli, Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Rei Kawakubo, Gucci and Moschino — a vibrant collection that hasn’t been seen together anywhere else.

From Schiaparelli’s 1930 ‘Shocking Pink’ dress to Yves Saint Laurent’s 1960s cocktail dresses, the objects on display depict how pink was coded as the ”feminine” colour in the 18th and 19th century. Elsewhere, the exhibit will also be accompanied by a new book which will be published by Thames & Hudson in October. Expect dresses, history and a whole lot of pink.

Get Your Feet Sandal-Ready With These Foot-Smoothing Products

When we think about our feet during the dark days of winter, it’s usually in reference to covering them up to keep warm. We debate about whether we could slip on one more pair of socks and we shop for the warmest pair of fleece-lined boots we can find. Now that it’s sandal season, we realize we’ve pretty much ignored our feet for the last few months.

For feet in desperate need of a pampering session, there’s no need to book an intensive pedicure. There are a number of buffing, smoothing and soothing foot products that can be used at home. Foot peels are always good, but that’s just one option. If you’re not into shedding your skin like a snake, you can try foot scrubs, intensive moisturizing creams, heel treatments and even sock-like foot masks. They all have the common goal of turning callused, dry soles into smooth, baby soft feet you can show off this summer. Ahead, shop some of the best foot treatments for sandal season.

Earning the Trust of Homeowners: How to Get Ahead of These Top 4 Homeowner Fears

Contractor-client-meeting

Most homeowners enjoy small-scale renovations and often complete basic DIY jobs on their own. But when it comes time for a larger project—and hiring a pro to do the work— many homeowners have a number of concerns and fears about the home renovation process. This makes them wary of placing a stranger in charge of their home improvement projects.

As a home improvement professional, your job is to alleviate these fears and make homeowners comfortable with you and your business. Here are 4 of the top homeowner fears and some ways to help get ahead of them.

Uneasiness and trust issues

For homeowners who haven’t ever hired a professional to complete a home improvement project before, this is uncharted territory. The first time you work with a new client, establishing a positive working relationship is essential if you want to earn their trust.

The easiest way to do this is by keeping lines of communication open and explaining the process from start to finish. Answer any questions your clients might have and speak openly and honestly about their fears—including budgets, timescales, and their expectations about the final product. If they know what to expect, your clients will be more likely to trust you to do a good job.

Cost

Even if your clients are seasoned home renovators, budgeting a home improvement project will probably cause them some stress. This is completely understandable, since homeowners can easily sink a lot of money into their remodeling projects. As a construction professional, you need to help homeowners understand exactly where their money is going and guide them through the decision making process.

Keeping a current pricing structure for your products and services is a great start. Once a client decides to go ahead with a project, prepare an exhaustive estimate of all the building costs (including labor, materials, and other incidentals) and discuss this with them in detail. Finally, show clients some of your past work and reviews, and make sure to add these to your website portfolio. This will help them to feel more comfortable about spending their money on you and to know that you are worth the cost.

Timescale/disruption to home life

After building a trusting relationship with construction professionals and cost, one of the next greatest fears of homeowners embarking on a large scale home improvement project is how the building work will disrupt their home life. Some worries your clients may have include:

  • How long will the project take?
  • Will I be able to use my home in the same way during the building process?
  • Will my home be too dirty to live in?
  • Who is going to be in my home? During what times of day?
  • Will the noise and activity anger my neighbors?

Answering these questions a) honestly and b) before beginning a project should help to alleviate these kinds of fears. After all, a homeowner’s house is still their home even when renovation work is taking place. Good practice for residential building projects includes:

  • Keeping regular hours of work (for example, between the hours of 9am and 5pm)
  • Cleaning up the building site at the end of each working day where possible
  • Giving homeowners the chance to meet builders and subcontractors
  • Providing clients with clear timelines and trying to stick to them as much as possible

Disliking results

After all is said and done, hopefully your clients will be pleased with and pleasantly surprised by the results. However, some homeowners worry that the finished project will be less than perfect and not what they expected. Stress relating to the finished project often includes worries about whether the result will look good and stand the test of time. Homeowners also might worry about failure to complete their project and what they might do if they don’t like the result.

While you can’t predict the future, you can give satisfaction guarantees to your clients. If, for example, they are unhappy with any part of the completed renovation project, try your best to make it right (or compensate them when this is not possible). As far as these other worries are concerned, regular communication throughout the building project should help to keep clients updated and aware of the progress being made and help them to feel confident that their wishes are being taken into account every step of the way.

Morgan Freeman Issues A Second Statement: ‘I Did Not Assault These Women’

Morgan Freeman

Source: Getty Images / Morgan Freeman

Soon after CNN broke the news that eight women accused Morgan Freeman of sexual harassment, the Oscar-winning actor issued a second statement stressing that he is innocent.

“I am devastated that 80 years of my life is at risk of being undermined, in the blink of an eye, by Thursday’s media reports,” Freeman writes.

“All victims of assault and harassment deserve to be heard. And we need to listen to them. But it is not right to equate horrific incidents of sexual assault with misplaced compliments or humor.”

However, he claims that all he did was make jokes and had no intention to make anyone uncomfortable.

“But I also want to be clear: I did not create unsafe work environments. I did not assault women. I did not offer employment or advancement in exchange for sex. Any suggestion that I did so is completely false.”

As we previously reportedCNN released an exclusive report in which they spoke with 16 people, eight of which say they experienced harassment at the hands of the 80-year-old actor.

One source who worked as a production assistant on the 2015 film, “Going In Style”  told the outlet that she experienced months of harassment. In several instances she alleged that Freeman frequently rubbed her back and tried on several occasions to lift up her skirt, inquiring whether or not she had on underwear.

“He never successfully lifted her skirt, she said — he would touch it and try to lift it, she would move away, and then he’d try again,” CNN reports.

However, one woman has come forward to say that CNN mischaracterized her statement and that she does not want to be included among any accusers.

Essence.com reports:

Chicago WGN-TV’s Tyra Martin is saying that she has issues with the way her comments were presented in CNN‘s report.

“Hey, still getting a lot of nasty messages from people who think I AM one of the accusers,” she told TMZ. “I’m not, never was. CNN totally misrepresented the video and took my remarks out of context.”

According to CNN’s report, eight women said Freeman created an uncomfortable work environment with frequent sexual comments and unwanted touching.

Martin, who had interviewed Freeman multiple times, described the actor as casually inappropriate with her — enough for her to become accustomed to his bawdy comments. In one specific interaction,  Freeman commented inappropriately about her skirt.

“When I stood up, I pulled my skirt part of my dress down and he did say, ‘Oh, don’t pull it down now,’“ Martin recalled.

Martin doesn’t change her testimony, but she does take issue with being named as one of his accusers. Instead, she saw many of his comments, though inappropriate, to be said in jest.

“That wasn’t my experience of Morgan Freeman,” she clarified her comments on Friday during WGN-TVs morning show. “The experiences were always fun for me.”

Freeman issued an initial statement apologizing on Thursday (May 24) when news hit of the damning report.

“Anyone who knows me or has worked with me knows I am not someone who would intentionally offend or knowingly make anyone feel uneasy. I apologize to anyone who felt uncomfortable or disrespected — that was never my intent.”

Freeman has already been pulled from his ubiquitous Visa ads.

Even Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are fans of these best-selling scented candles

Aren’t we all?

Just like us, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are big fans of one of the most popular fragrance brands.

We already know that both Meghan and Harry wore a unisex fragrance created by Floris on their big day, but they went with a different perfume house to scent the venue.

The couple chose French perfumer Diptyque to scent their wedding and, although we don’t know the exact fragrance, its reported the couple chose a selection of fresh and floral scents.

A spokesperson for the brand has said, ‘We would like to express our sincere congratulations to Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on their wedding.

‘We were delighted to help scent their special day.’

The Sussexes aren’t the only Duke and Duchess who love a luxury candle, though; Kate Middleton and Prince William reportedly chose for Jo Malone candles to scent Westminster Abbey for their wedding back in 2011.

Kate’s fragrance of choice is reportedly the brand’s ever-popular Orange Blossom; an excellent choice, we might add.

It just goes to show that nobody is immune from a scented candle addiction…

These little baby milestones are breaking this new mama’s heart

by

This morning I woke up to baby giggles. Not dream whimpers, not cries of discomfort, not even yells of hunger. Just sweet baby giggles and chatter. My 5-month-old was awake and was entertaining himself until I woke up. As precious as it was, I couldn’t help but feel a tiny twinge of sadness at the sight of my happy baby boy. He looked so big.

What was once a little baby (as little as an almost 9-pound baby can be), is now growing into a kid, and it’s so strange to see these changes take place. I’m certainly not complaining about my wake-up call, but it’s all a little hard to take sometimes.

There have been the milestones we were expecting, like sleeping through the night and rolling over for the first time, but there have been so many others, little skills and actions, otherwise insignificant moments that have surprised me and reminded me that my baby is growing up.

baby feeding himself with bottle

It’s in the way his tiny hands now reach up to hold his bottle. Those little hands that love to grasp my fingers and play with my hair, now are figuring out how to feed him and attend to his own needs.

The way he now pushes his legs to stand up. He grunts and groans until he’s up in the air and then grins so proudly. It’s adorable and wonderful and terrible all at once, this independence he’s longing for.

When he loses his pacifier but quickly finds it again, all on his own.

When he cries in the night but comforts himself before I can even reach for him, putting himself back to sleep.

All things he should be doing. All things I wanted him to do. All things that at some point in the middle of the night when he was a newborn I hoped and prayed he’d figure out so we could all sleep and function one day.

All things that are now slowly breaking my heart a little.

No one told me about these little milestones. The ones you don’t write down in the baby book, or even photograph. But I guarantee you, the first time I saw him hold his bottle on his own is forever etched in my memory.

These moments are so bittersweet. Of course I want him to grow and develop, and become more independent of me. But each new skill, each new milestone, is one step closer to my baby not being a baby anymore.

Everyone told me how fast time would go. How “the nights are long, but the years are short.” How right they were, and we’re just getting started! I blinked, and my little baby got not-so little anymore.

We’ll be approaching the 6-month mark soon. He’ll turn a year old in a heartbeat and I’ll blink a few more times to see he’s graduating high school and leaving my care. Which is just how it should be. But I think I’ll rock him a little longer tonight, just the same.
