How Millie Kentner from Freaks and Geeks still inspires me to do my own thing

How Millie Kentner from Freaks and Geeks still inspires me to do my own thing

How Millie Kentner from <em>Freaks and Geeks</em> still inspires me to do my own thing

When Freaks and Geeks made its cable debut in 1999, it introduced the world to a cast of fictional students that would forever stand as a relevant and authentic depiction of  trying to get through high school. From awkward first dances to school bullies that ruled the dodgeball court, the Judd Apatow-produced comedic series was centered on the stories of a group of, well, freaks and geeks. And while I was more than happy to follow the adventures of Lindsay Weir (Linda Cardellini), Kim Kelly (Busy Philips), and Bill Haverchuck (Martin Starr), there was one particular character I felt always deserved more credit: Millie Kentner.

Many of the characters on this eternally classic series could fall into two categories—a freak or a geek—but Millie was much more than that. Sure, her participation in the Mathletes and her dedication to studying may have classified her as your standard nerd, but it was her caring personality and disinterest in what others thought of her that truly made Millie unique. She truly looked out for every student at William McKinley High School.

During the first episode, we meet the beacon of light that is Millie. Even though her best friend, Lindsay, is surrounded by freaks, Millie is unafraid and approaches the group to remind Lindsay that the deadline for the academic decathlon is quickly approaching. While Lindsay might be trying to temporarily hide her geeky identity from the school’s resident badasses, Millie is unashamed. In fact, she goes on to express concern over her bestie’s new circle of friends.

This initial instance isn’t the only time we witness Millie caring for others either. She stars in a school assembly that shows the dangers of drunk driving, she attempts—and fails—to join the freaks after the death of her beloved dog, and she’s never afraid to say exactly what she’s thinking—including disapproval over Kim’s improper use of the school’s darkroom for “fornication.” She’s also more than happy to turn down an opportunity to party, saying, “I get high on life.”

Of course, each of these hilarious instances pale in comparison to Millie’s shining moment: when she takes over a riotous school party at Lindsay’s house with a piano performance of “Jesus Is Just Alright.” The character’s religious upbringing is mentioned throughout the show and results in her turning down many of the trademark high school activities. True to form, while the rest of her friends choose to drink at the party, she takes to the piano, leading an entire group of fake drunks in a singalong, one of the greatest moments in Freaks and Geeks history.

The scene became an instant classic as Millie was joined for her performance by freak, Nick Andopolis (Jason Segel). The interaction between these two unlikely friends epitomized the comedic intentions of the series—showing how two students from completely opposite groups can became allies, even if for just a brief moment. And while my own experience in high school may have not proved as harmonious, I can’t help but feel hope that maybe one day we’ll all just get along and join in a group performance of classic hymnals.

Millie may have never been one of the series main characters, but each and every one of her brief on-screen appearances made a lasting impact on me.

As an adult, I thankfully no longer have to face the halls of high school, but Millie taught me that, in life, there really are no freaks or geeks. We’re all just trying our best to find our place in the halls of life. And, if nothing else, we’re all just trying to find what makes us happy, and sometimes that breaking into song at our friend’s party.

‘Shazam!’ is a superhero movie for kids, and that’s a great thing

TwitterFacebook

It’s been a long time since superheroes could be dismissed as mere kid stuff, thanks to stories as intelligent as Black Panther or as disturbing as The Dark Knight or as gleefully inappropriate as Deadpool.

But lost in all the praise over how mature and thoughtful and boundary-pushing these films can be is the fact that, well, superheroes are kid stuff. Most of us first fell in love with these larger-than-life crusaders as children, over comic books or Saturday morning cartoons or family trips to the multiplex.

Getting Bored In Your Relationship? That Could Be A Good Thing

black couple

Source: Hero Images / Getty Images

In the rush of schedules, house chores, careers, and Netflix, relationships can get really stagnant. And that’s super normal. We often equate boredom in a relationship to something terrible, but in reality, it’s a natural part of partnership growth.

Via Madamenoire:

“Over time, we get more comfortable in a relationship,” Marisa T. Cohen, an associate professor of psychology at St. Francis College and author of “From First Kiss to Forever” told Washington Post.

“We get set in our ways, and with that comes a wonderful sense of security and trust in our partners.”

But the monotony can start to weigh on folks who see themselves as more adventurous. The routine “may be unnerving to some people, especially those who want or expect that exciting and passionate feeling they experienced at the beginning of the relationship,” Cohen explained.

And let’s be honest, the rush of newness can be addicting–especially when we haven’t felt it in a while due to being in a long-term relationship. The accessibility we now have with dating apps and platforms also makes jumping ship easier than ever before.

“With the rise in swipe-based sites and the ‘gamification’ of dating, part of the appeal for people may be the thrill of the chase, or meeting new people on a regular basis,” Cohen describes.

In the rush of schedules, house chores, careers, and Netflix, relationships can get really stagnant.

“You can have a fear of missing out on something ‘better,’ making the wrong decision, or being stuck or trapped in a relationship that isn’t right,” Rebekah Montgomery, a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice in Washington told Washington Post.

But all of these feeling and anxiety are real and expected. But the beauty is, if you’ve reached boredom and optimal comfort with your partner, you probably have really invested and built the core foundation of any connection: love and commitment. You may be lacking a little passion, but that aspect is easier to awaken. Humans are endlessly deep and you have to work to create opportunities to get to know your partner on a deeper level.

“When you transition to relationship mode, you are essentially focusing your time and energy on one partner, creating a deep, intimate space with them,” Cohen said of this relationship space.

“Being with someone who is soft, kind and supportive is pretty stable; it’s not the roller-coaster ride, or anxiety and butterflies of wondering what’s going to happen next. It might, at first, even feel a little boring.”

But you can offset the boredom with distance, travel, pursuing separate hobbies and bringing it back home–all of these moments will help turn up the heat. Don’t be bored. Get creative in loving your mate in different ways.

Sara Tariq Recaps ‘Lindsay Lohan’s Beach Club’: When It’s Just a Mykonos Thing

Lindsay-Lohan’s-Beach-Club-Recap
Lindsay Lohan’s Beach Club MTV

Lindsay Lohan’s Beach Club VIP host Sara Tariq will be recapping exclusively with Us Weekly each week about her opinion on the latest episode. Check back every week for her recap!

Alexa, play “Act Up” by City Girls. This song is a whole mood. You’re welcome.

It’s me, Sara Tariq, back to explain more of my boy drama while I was out in Mykonos. If you’re still trying to figure out why the show revolves so much around it — well, we are in the same boat my friends, because I am too.

The episode starts off with Lindsay Lohan explaining that she just wants us to be happy together and get along … so she puts us on yacht. Sailing through the Mediterranean on a nice-ass boat with unlimited alcohol after all of the emotional turmoil I’ve been dealing with all summer? Sign me up. We were all super excited for this day. All I know is that I wasn’t going to let anything f–k up my vibe because my summer has been everything but smooth sailing thus far. From being called an idiot on television to being blatantly ignored by someone you care about and developed genuine feelings for, in front of his “family”/friends was more than I saw myself getting into prior to signing up for this experience but hey, this is how you party in Mykonos, bitch.

I feel like I finally got to showcase my personality a bit more this episode. I was overshadowed by my Brent drama and relationship the entire season. This is when I started to finally let loose and not have the pressure of walking on eggshells about everything because I was in such a vulnerable place before. But alas, Lindsay thinks I was causing drama when that wasn’t my intention at all. I was just over everything and wanted to have some fun. Cue “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.”

Why did I kiss Billy? Because he’s cute, duh. Now, do I want to wife him up? Meh, probably not. I mean I kissed Alex too, who’s clearly gay as f–k, but I don’t really care about anything at this point (we all go through that phase after a breakup, right?). So what? I just got out of a relationship and we’re catering to girls/gay clientele every week, not that I prefer pimping myself out to clients, ahem, cc: Brent. But I’m obviously just going with the flow and having fun with it.

Lindsay Lohan’s Beach Club
Lindsay Lohan’s Beach Club MTV

I actually do have a soul, though, and I did feel bad for Brent, yet I decided to be a little selfish this day. There’s nothing wrong with that. Sometimes you need to think about yourself before others because self-love is important. Frankly, I feel like you can never have enough and I need more of that for myself — still, to this day.

Shout-out to having real friends, though. Like everyone in the house who had my back and felt for me while second-hand dealing with my bulls–t/questionable decisions. You guys are the true MVPs. Seeing Jonitta stand up for me the way she did in this episode really tugged at my heart. Being there for your homegirl and standing up for women as a whole never gets old and she was truly a class act after everything she had been through while we were out there as well. So thank you for that, J. She’s a real one.

Even though Lindsay hears things through the grapevine and assumes I’m causing drama. I see it all now and I wish I could have explained myself to her more but you guys will just have to have your popcorn ready and tune in to find out how it all unfolds. Maybe I shouldn’t have taken one out of Brent’s handbook of stirring the pot? I thought we were being rewarded for it so I’m just as confused as you. It’s always risky pulling a you on you. So until then, always have respect for yourself, stand up for yourself and stay classy, my friends!

Lindsay Lohan’s Beach Club airs on MTV Mondays at 10 p.m. ET.

Nutty chocolate-stuffed Krispy Kremes are a thing and we’re here for it

Yes. Yes. Yes.

krispy kreme

There’s so many delicious chocolatey treats going around at the moment we don’t know where to start – so we’ll be picking up everything. That includes the Hotel Chocolate Easter sandwiches, this Prosecco-infused egg and the brand new ruby chocolate Easter gem.

But if you’re looking for a non-Easter themed delight, what could be better than an Original Krispy Kreme doughnut? How about an Original Filled doughnut?

The masterminds over at Krispy Kreme have decided to stuff the classic sweet treat with two different flavours – you can choose from a chocolate hazlenut sauce (ahem, Nutella-esque), or the deliciously addictive salted caramel. Each doughnut is ring-shaped with the flavoured sauce oozing through the middle. That’s right – it’s not just lightly coated with the stuff, it’s actually filled. Yum.

These new additions will set you back £1.90, which is 35p more than the Original Glazed and 15p more than a topped doughnut.

krispy kreme

The Krsipy Kreme ‘magic in the middle’ pop-up experience is currently happening in Great Newport Street, Leicester Square, London. It’s open for two days – from 8th to the 9th of March – to celebrate the launch of the new Original Filled dougnuts, and they’ll be handed out for free.

If you can’t make it down to the pop-up, you’ll be able to get your hands on the Original Filled Krispy Kreme doughnuts in stores and at your local supermarket until April 7th.

We’re so ready.

Pyjamas with your pet’s face on them are now a thing

We’ll take two, thanks

pet pyjamas

There was a lot of fun to be had with the personalised wrapping paper where you could get your own face printed all over the presents you bought people to remind them that you, too, are a gift.

But what if we told you that you can now get your pet’s face printed on a lovely pair of pyjamas? Because you can. It’s officially a thing.

Yes, you’ve probably been gifted a few pairs of pj’s over Christmas – thanks, mum – but the ultimate sleep wear is from Patricia’s Couture. The custom-made long-sleeve set has your fur baby’s face printed all over it so that you can be close to your little one at all times.

The website says: ‘We print all pets. So feel free to upload a picture of your rabbit, frog, hamster, fish, lizard, etc. All we ask is you own the rights or have permission to use the photo.’

And the fun doesn’t just stop at cosy pj’s – you can get your pet’s face printed on scarves, caftans, t-shirts and various other accessories.

Wearing your pet with pride will set you back a pretty penny, with the pyjama set coming in at around £110. But can you put a price on true fur baby love? Hmmm?

Jimmy Kimmel Discovers Tuna Is the Latest Thing That Doesn’t Pair Well With Millennials

In the wake of a report that millennials are killing canned tuna, Jimmy Kimmel decided to find out if the generation even knows how to open cans.

Ahead of Monday’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the late-night host sent his team out to Hollywood Boulevard to challenge people aged 22 to 37 (if they were all actually millennials, that is) to open a can of tuna fish.

“Sales of canned tuna fish have plummeted. Canned tuna consumption is down more than 40 percent over the past three decades and the tuna companies believe the reason is because millennials don’t want to go to the trouble of opening a can,” Kimmel explained. “I find that reason a little hard to believe so we decided to put the theory to the test. We went out on the street and we asked young people walking by to try to open a can of tuna.”

Unfortunately, it didn’t seem like many of the segment’s participants were up to the task.

New study says not exercising is pretty much the worst thing you can possibly do

exercise health

It’s no secret that there are a lot of things that can potentially impact your overall health. What food you eat, what habits you adopt or drop, and even how much sleep you get can have serious impacts on your wellbeing, but a new study by cardiologists reveals that of all the things you can do that might negatively impact your health, a sedentary lifestyle is the most deadly.

The research, which was published in JAMA Network Open, surveyed a whopping 122,007 patients between early 1991 and late 2014. The doctors recorded fitness levels of the individuals and then followed up to track mortality rates. The numbers were, as one of the authors of the paper put it, “extremely surprising.”

Game of Thrones Deployed a ‘Thing That Kills Drones’ to Save You From Spoilers. What Is That?

Sounds like the Game of Thrones crew is absolutely willing to go to extreme measures to prevent season 8 spoilers.

According to Sophie Turner—who plays Sansa Stark on the HBO drama—the production team deployed “drone killers” to disable any camera drones attempting to capture footage of the show’s sets during filming for the final season.

“If a drone flies above sets, there’s a thing that can kill the drones, which is really cool,” she told Entertainment Weekly during an appearance at New York Comic-Con. “It creates a field around it and the drones just drop. It’s very X-Men.

However, these so-called “drone killers” are special electronic devices that are typically used by police to force drones to the ground in the event of an emergency, not keep fans from learning the fate of Jon Snow.

“The purpose is primarily for emergency situations,” Oceanside police Lt. Aaron Doyle told the Los Angeles Times. “It won’t be used when someone complains about a neighbor flying a drone. It’s pretty much for a life-or-death situation, to save lives.”

Black Lightning Just Did One Thing Superhero Shows Rarely Do

This interview contains spoilers for the Black Lightning Season 2 premiere, titled “The Book of Consequences: Chapter One: Rise of the Green Light Babies.” A full review will be posted later tonight.

In countless comic book movies and TV shows, cops who are tight with a superhero are usually the last to figure out their identity (unless it’s purposefully revealed to them), despite the fact that they’re supposed to follow clues and solve mysteries for a living.

The Black Lightning Season 2 premiere dismantled that trope pretty quickly, with Jefferson’s long-suffering friend and neighbor, Bill Henderson, finally figuring out Jefferson Pierce’s secret and confronting him over his deception. It’s a heartbreaking moment, seeing the trust between the two men shatter after decades of friendship, and star Cress Williams tells IGN it’ll be a long road back for Jeff and Bill – if their bond can be repaired at all.

The Latest Thing Millennials Are Killing? The Primary Care Doctor

Millennials are killing everything from car ownership to home ownership to beer to vacations to the institution of marriage itself, if the headlines are to be believed. (Full disclosure: I am a millennial.) So why not add another victim to the list? In this case, the primary care doctor.

A Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) survey and followup analysis by Kaiser Health News found that 26% of 1,200 respondents said they didn’t have a go-to primary care physician. But, digging a bit deeper, the survey found sharp generational shifts fueling that trend: Nearly half (45%) of 18-to-29 year olds said they didn’t have a primary care doctor. That figure fell to 28% for Americans aged 30 to 49 and just 18% and 12%, respectively, for people in the 50-to-64 and 65-plus cohort.

Some of this can likely be explained by a divergence of needs. It’s not implausible to think that, the older you get, the more you may want to have the security of a personal medical professional versed in your health history.

But it also represents a sea change in thinking likely fostered by an increased emphasis on convenience (and, perhaps, increasingly transitory lifestyles), according to some experts. A same-day telehealth appointment in a stranger could prove more valuable to some than a long-standing relationship with a doctor who may not be available at the click of a button.

The broader question is: What long-term effects will this shift have on public health? People with chronic conditions, for instance, may benefit from the stability of a primary care doctor who can provide continuous (and, theoretically, more personalized) care. At the same time, Americans who live in the numerous areas with a shortage of doctors may have entirely understandable reasons for pursuing more transitory medical relationships.

Fed Up Soccer Fan Throws Cabbage at Manager Who Finds the ‘Whole Thing Hugely Disrespectful’

Following a string of losses for professional football club Aston Villa, one fed-up fan kicked off the team’s Tuesday match by hurling a cabbage at manager Steve Bruce.

Ahead of Villa’s game against Preston North End—which ended in a disappointing 3-3 draw—one fan launched a whole green cabbage at Bruce to express his displeasure with the club’s recent performance in England’s second-tier Championship league. Villa has won just one of its last 10 games and is ranked 12th in the 24-team league.

“Unfortunately, it sums up the society we are in at the moment. There’s no respect for anyone,” Bruce said in a post-game interview, according to FOX Sports. “Certainly for someone like him, I’m surprised he knew what a cabbage was. I find the whole thing hugely disrespectful.”
