A Winter Storm and Thousands of Super Bowl Fans Are Bearing Down on Snow-Shy Atlanta

(ATLANTA) — Five years after cars, trucks and school buses became marooned on Atlanta freeways in what became known as “snow jam ,” another winter storm is threatening the city — just as thousands of fans begin pouring into town for Super Bowl 53.

A winter storm watch goes into effect at 4 a.m. Tuesday for Atlanta, a city known for grinding to a halt even in relatively light snowfalls.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp on Monday said state offices in more than 30 counties in the northern part of the state would be closed Tuesday, including those in the Atlanta area.

The National Weather Service projects that up to an inch (2.5 centimeters) of snow is possible Tuesday in Atlanta, with up to 2 inches (5 centimeters) in far northern suburbs. Forecasters warn of the possibility of ice-glazed roads and highways.

The potential for black ice is “the overriding concern,” said Homer Bryson, director of the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency.

“Temperatures are going to plummet,” the governor said at a Monday news conference.

“It’s very similar to what we saw in 2014 where the roadways will not have time to dry off before the moisture or precipitation on them refreezes,” Kemp said. “And that’s when you have black ice, and that’s what causes wrecks, which causes gridlock and public safety issues, injuries.”

Sunday’s Super Bowl will be played in downtown Atlanta in Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which has a roof. The roof will be open if weather permits, officials have said.

There’s a 40 percent chance of showers Sunday, but highs will be near 58 degrees (14 Celsius). That’s slightly warmer than average for Feb. 3 in Atlanta, climate records show.

But forecasters say the more immediate threat is Tuesday, when roads could be treacherous.

“It is often easy to pass judgment on how we in Georgia deal with snow and ice, but for those from the north what you do know is that an ice event is very different than a snow event,” Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said Monday. “And because we don’t want a repeat of 2014, we have already begun to pretreat our streets and are paying particularly attention to our sidewalks because we do know that we will have many visitors in our tourist areas.”

Forecasters were uncertain how widespread the snowfall will be.

“Some uncertainty continues regarding amounts of snow accumulations and how far south and east the threat may extend,” the weather service said in a Monday update on the approaching storm.

This Nonprofit Is Making Thousands of Kids Happy, One Skateboard at a Time

Kayden Batson kept asking his great-grandmother when he could pick out his very first skateboard.

His great-grandmother showed him two skateboards, and the 4-year-old picked the one with the rainbow sticker. The board was taller than he was, and he didn’t quite have the hang of riding it yet, but that didn’t matter – the skateboard was his and he loved it.

“I love it,” said Debra Griffen, Kayden’s 65-year-old great-grandmother. “I’ve never seen him this happy.”

Griffen planned to put the skateboard up until Christmas morning.

“This is Christmas,” she said.

Griffen threw her back out on the job and relies on an $ 800-a-month disability check to support herself and Kayden. With her limited income, buying a skateboard for her great-grandson would be too expensive.

Kayden would have just done without presents this year if it wasn’t for Boards for Bros.

What Is Boards for Bros?

A teenager builds a skateboard

The Skatepark of Tampa, an iconic Florida skatepark whose fans include Tony Hawk and Lil Wayne, started Boards for Bros as its nonprofit charity in 2006.

Boards for Bros is on a mission to make sure that all kids who want to own a nice skateboard can get one – for free.

“We help those kids who don’t want to play a team sport. We help the teenager in a foster care situation that can’t take a bike with them when they get shuffled from group home to home,” said Michelle Box, the executive director of Boards for Bros.

The nonprofit collects new and used skateboard equipment and cash donations throughout the year to build and distribute as many skateboards as possible to underserved communities.

It relies on volunteers and partnerships with other nonprofits and youth outreach programs to reach underprivileged and at-risk youths, especially during the holidays. Those volunteers give skateboarding demos and work with the kids to decorate their boards at community distribution events.

It’s not unusual for them to roll up to a local skatepark and hand out 100 skateboards to kids in need.

In 2018, Boards for Bros handed out more than 3,000 skateboards, double what they doled out in 2017.

Boards for Bros Holiday Giveaways

For Tonya Griffin, whose 2-year-old son Kameron Bryant also received a new skateboard at the Christmas distribution event in Largo, Florida, a free skateboard meant a little more financial wiggle room during the holidays.

She has to buy presents for three children on a $ 250 budget.

“We’re stretching what we already have to pay the bills on top of giving the kids gifts,” she said. “It just helps us.”

The average cost for a nice skateboard setup including trucks, bearing, wheels, deck and grip tape is between $ 100 and $ 175, according to Ashley Rey, a Board for Bros volunteer who helped with the Christmas distribution.

Boards for Bros also gave out free skate shoes that day and helmets on another, which saves those caregivers even more money.

Skateboard Access for All

Boards for Bros’ mission is to break down the economic barriers so all kids have access to skateparks, not just the ones who can afford it.

“Most parks do not have rental equipment, so if a kid doesn’t have equipment, they can’t use the skateboard park,” Box said. “We just want to bridge that gap.”

Boards for Bros has year-round chapters in California, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, New York and North Carolina, plus it holds sponsored events in Texas and Colorado. It has also sent skateboards to Bangladesh, Cuba and Honduras.

“We impact the lives of the kids who get those skateboards,” Box said. “Nobody can dispute the long-term impact it has on the kids and the families to be able to put down their phone and skate.”

And if the kids outgrow the skateboard? Box asks them to promise to pass it to another kid who is interested in skateboarding.

How to Get a Free Skateboard

While Box said Boards for Bros consider requests for skateboards on a case-by-case basis, especially in the Tampa Bay region, the best way to get your kid a skateboard is to ask their after-school program to reach out to Boards for Bros to set up an event.

If you’re interested in donating or participating in the Boards for Bros’ free skateboard program, check out boards4bros.org.

Not everybody who asks for a skateboard gets one, but the organization tries to work with as many people as possible because it believes every kid’s life is better with wheels.

Coinbase Raises $300 Million, Cites Prospect of ‘Thousands’ of Crypto Assets

Coinbase, the most popular cryptocurrency exchange in the U.S., announced on Tuesday a massive Series E funding round that values the company at $ 8 billion.

The company announced the $ 300 million investment in a blog post, which said the financing is being led by New York-based Tiger Capital, and will be used to accelerate global expansion and the offering of more cryptocurrencies.

“We see hundreds of cryptocurrencies that could be added to our platform today and we will lay the groundwork to support thousands in the future,” wrote Coinbase Chief Operating Officer Assif Hirji in the post.

Currently, Coinbase only offers Bitcoin and a handful of other cryptocurrencies, in part due to concerns that many digital currencies may be securities that must be registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The latest funding round, which follows a $ 100 million round in August of 2017, is being led by New York-based Tiger Global with contributions from Y Combinator Continuity, Wellington Management, Andreessen Horowitz, and Polychain Capital among others.

A source close to Coinbase told Fortune the company will also be bringing on other investors in the near future via a secondary offering worth $ 200 million or more. This offering would serve as a vehicle for some employees and early investors to cash in their shares, and would not change the overall amount of capital raised by Coinbase.

The Series E funding round also points to Coinbase possibly going public in 2019. While the company hasn’t discussed a specific timeline to go public, CEO Brian Armstrong recently stated he would like to run a public company.

In Search of New Revenue Streams

As Fortune reported in September, Coinbase is profitable but has seen a sharp drop-off in trading volume in 2018, which has made it more pressing for the company to look for other sources of revenue.

One source of income is likely to be custodial fees from big institutions that turn to Coinbase to hold cryptocurrency on their behalf. The company has long talked about bringing on such investors, and last week announced a key regulatory license to serve as a custodian.

Another future source of revenue for Coinbase could come from listing so-called security tokens, including those tied to conventional assets such as private shares or real estate. The market for such tokens is still nascent but prominent technology figures, including former PayPal executive David Sacks, are betting on them as a way to bring new capital to illiquid markets.

Coinbase declined to provide further detail about Hirji’s reference to the possible addition of “hundreds” and “thousands” of cryptocurrencies to the company’s platforms, including whether these might comprise registered security tokens. It’s also possible Hirji’s comment implies that Coinbase plans to dramatically ramp up its cryptocurrency offerings in markets outside of the U.S. where security regulations are more lax.

The blog post also noted Coinbase will use the new funding round to support new products like a recently-announced “Stablecoin,” which is pegged to the U.S. dollar, and a tool called Coinbase Wallet that helps consumers explore blockchain-based applications.

“Coinbase is, and will remain, a crypto-first company,” stated Hirji. “We see Coinbase’s growth as validation that the ecosystem will only continue to grow in size, influence and impact–ultimately ushering in a more open financial system for the world.”
