Kaiser Permanente Provides Total Health Care to Special Olympics Southern California as the ‘Official Health Partner’

PASADENA, Calif. — Kaiser Permanente Southern California has signed a three-year agreement as the “Official Health Partner” for Special Olympics Southern California. In yesterday’s contract signing, the two entities acknowledged their shared vision and commitment to diversity, inclusion and total health for individuals and communities.

“There are many reasons why this partnership works,” said Julie Miller-Phipps, president of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals, Inc., for the Southern California Region. “Special Olympics Southern California has led the charge in transforming lives through the joy of sport for people with intellectual disabilities and in doing so they have reached, touched and taught the public about the importance of inclusion and acceptance of each other’s differences. We believe that by actively supporting and participating in SOSC events, we can strengthen and spread further a message of understanding and respect for children and adults with intellectual disabilities throughout the communities we serve.”

“Improving the health and wellness of individuals with intellectual disabilities is one of Special Olympics Southern California’s goals,” said Bill Shumard, president and CEO of Special Olympics Southern California. “With Kaiser Permanente as a teammate, we’ll be able to transform even more lives through health education, health promotion and health care. We look forward to partnering with them over the years.”

As part of the commitment, Kaiser Permanente has appointed Southern California Permanente Medical Group Family and Sports Medicine physician, Aaron Rubin, MD, to serve as the official chief medical officer for SOSC.

“Providing exceptional care to the communities we serve is part of what drives our physicians at Kaiser Permanente. The inspiring Special Olympics athletes will receive the highest standard of medical expertise and sideline care from our Permanente physicians, led by Dr. Aaron Rubin. SOSC can rest assured that their athletes are in good hands with him at the helm,” said Edward M. Ellison, MD, executive medical director for the Southern California Permanente Medical Group.

Dr. Rubin, who previously served as medical director of the 2015 Special Olympics World Games Los Angeles, will oversee approximately 40 Southern California Permanente Medical Group physicians and medical support staff at the games, providing sideline medical care and ongoing medical care to the athletes and SOSC over the next three years. The medical team will also assist SOSC’s Healthy Athletes, a program that provides free health screening to all SOSC athletes.

Kaiser Permanente staff and physicians will volunteer at SOSC competitions throughout the year, including the 2018 Summer Games on June 9 and 10 at California State University, Long Beach. More than 1,100 athletes from across Southern California will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals and ribbons. The Games feature four sports: track and field, basketball, bocce and swimming, and will introduce a new sport, flag football. The Games are free and open to the public. Learn more at www.sosc.org/summergames.

Kaiser Permanente Chairman and CEO Bernard J. Tyson, NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum, WNBA President Lisa Borders, Hall of Famer Dikembe Mutombo and Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms will come together to explore concepts of resilience and total health in our communities.

NBA All-Star Stephen Curry will join the forum’s host, ESPN “SportsCenter” anchor Hannah Storm, for a one-on-one conversation about the power of sports and his global community efforts.

This year’s forum will examine ways to improve the total health — body, mind and spirit — and well-being of underserved youth and families, reduce stigma around mental health, and showcase how sports can create stronger and more inclusive communities in the U.S. and across the globe.

“Through our partnership with the NBA, we are able to make a positive difference in a matter that is vitally important to us both — the total health and well-being of America’s communities,” said Tyson.

Kaiser Permanente Chief Community Health Officer Bechara Choucair, MD, will guide a thought-provoking panel discussion, and keynote speaker Laila Ali will share her experiences as a world-class athlete, fitness and nutrition expert and parent working toward total health. Additional participants will include Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity Ruth Petersen and CEO of MENTOR, David Shapiro.

Justin Timberlake’s Super Bowl Halftime Show Was a Total Disaster

Christopher Polk/Getty

For someone so recently tone-deaf, it’s remarkable that Justin Timberlake managed to get out a note at all during his Super Bowl halftime show.

Then again, the sound design was so poor—Timberlake’s vocals were only decipherable when no instruments were playing—even that meager commendation is arguable. What’s inarguable is that after a string of jaw-dropping extravaganzas from the likes of Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, and Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake delivered the worst halftime show of the tradition’s recent pop-star era. May the ghost of Prince haunt him forever.

It’s one thing when a cynical media is preemptively eager to drag a performance. From the unjust optics of Timberlake’s redemption for his part in the Janet Jackson nip-slip fiasco to the rumors that he’d be using a hologram of The Purple One against his family’s wishes, the lead-up to Sunday night’s show was mired in controversy. But it’s another when the abysmal end product merits the inevitable snark.

Man Repeller Hosted a Dinner With Milly, and It Was Obviously a Total Delight

The fashion crowd admittedly gets the occasional bad rap, but IRL, the industry’s genuine cool kids aren’t pushing anyone into lockers or making them do their homework. Bona fide cool kids are all about going out of their way to connect with good people so they can get together and geek out over sparkly skirts or Stranger Things, or whatever else their hearts align on. Shout out to our friends at Milly and Man Repeller, who hosted a Make New Friends dinner in a legit floral wonderland, aka Milly’s super-cool SoHo store at 158 Mercer, to celebrate the designer’s fall collection.

The evening rounded up a bunch of fantastic women, surrounding them with gorgeous clothes and plying them with flowers, food, and wine in the spirit of overcoming the increasingly-difficult-as-you-get-older task of hanging out with new people. (As Man Repeller’s Harling Ross puts it, “In the ‘adult world,’ you don’t have many opportunities to walk up to someone at the playground and ask if they want to push your swing.”) Attendees showed up in super-mediocre outfits barely worth mentioning—KIDDING! Predictably, all our new style crushes arrived in covetable looks with loads of Milly’s fall collection in the mix, and we had to share all the delicious sartorial goodness with you immediately.

Catch a glimpse of the Milly x Man Repeller Make New Friends dinner party below, and shop all our favorite Milly statement pieces worn on the night.

How’s this for a chic mix of amazing women? Here, you’ve got Olimpia Valli Fassi Soheve (photographer and Tom Is Not a Boy founder), Unity Phelan (New York City Ballet soloist), Michelle Smith (Milly’s creative director and founder) in a ’90s-revival long-sleeve crop top, and Elliott Sailors (Milly campaign model and equal rights activist). “Is Elliott wearing sequined track pants?” you ask? Oh, absolutely.
Brie Welch (eternally chic stylist), Krissy Jones (co-founder of Sky Ting Yoga), and Danielle Prescod (senior style editor at BET) have us appreciating low-key Americana cool.
No need for small talk when you’re sitting in the middle of the magical, über-floral conversation-starting dinner party of your dreams.
A DIY bouquet bar meant daydreams of running away and becoming florists were fulfilled, if only for the evening.
Jasmin Aujla from the MR team knows that sparkles and knits are a foolproof combo. Snap up that statement-making skirt right here.
Franchesca Ramsey (actor, comedian, writer, vlogger, TV host, generally incredible human) rocking a Milly faux-fur jacket that FYI, also comes in a pint-size version we currently can’t get over. Someone you know has a child who needs this.
Tatiana Hambro (Moda Operandi’s fashion writer) dressed to let her DIY bouquet “pop.” (ICYMI, that’s meant to be a joke about fashion-writer speak.) If you need me, I’m just over here making a mental note to invest in an all-white Canadian tuxedo ASAP.
Introducing two of our favorite fall trends by way of table setting: glittery metallics and florals. PS: These are a match made in F/W 17 heaven.
Katie Sturino (founder and blogger over at The 12ish Style) taking a classic Man Repeller styling cue, proving bold bags, colorful stripes, furry embellishments, and animal prints all work gloriously in close proximity.
Equally coveting Unity Phelan’s DIY bouquet and her lace bustier (get a better look at it here).
Statement-making acrylic clutches were the standout piece in this sea of must-have accessories (and they got bonus points for being super glittery).

BRB, we’re checking out all of Michelle Smith’s must-have Milly pieces—she’s done us a favor and helpfully curated her fall favorites here.

Blake Lively had seven outfit changes in one day and handled it like the total pro she is

The yellow suit is EVERYTHING

blake lively outfits

If you’ve been keeping an eye on Blake Lively’s style evolution through the years, you’ll know the woman knows her fashion. Still, we were quite impressed when she managed to pull not one, not two, but three outfit changes in one day.

The actress has been out and about promoting her new film All I See Is You in New York, and chose different looks for each media appearance or interview she did. Well, you wouldn’t want to be caught twice in the same outfit, now would you?

Blake Lively outfits

Rex

Blake started off the day like she meant business, in a three-piece plaid suit from the Ralph Lauren AW17 collection, which she accessorised with a tie, burgundy Michael Kors bag and studded biker boots. The outfit was so spot on, in even earned her fashion kudos from Gigi Hadid, who called her ‘everything’.

Later on, the actress changed into a fabulous houndstooth Chanel jumpsuit, paired with a novelty rolling dice bag, also by Chanel, and Louboutin heels.

The mum-of-two also got papped later in the day in a blue wrap coat layered over a striped skirt and floral boots, which she wore with a brown leather jacket.

After all those muted shades, it was time for Blake to brighten things up a bit, and that she did with a yellow two-piece Brandon Maxwell outfit with palazzo trousers and bell sleeves. She paired it with Lorraine Scwhartz diamond earrings, because why not? (The pair are BFFs in real life, so would be rude not to).

So far so good, but she made the look even better by adding some gold leopard heels by Charlotte Olympia. Just look at them.

Super casual. 💅Nails by the queen @enamelle

Four outfits later, Blake opted for an elegant strapless Oscar de la Renta midi dress, that she loved so much, she had to share pictures of it from various angles on her Instagram page. To be fair, I would to.

When evening came, Blake looked to Studio 54 for inspiration, and as you can imagine, there was plenty of glitter involved.

She caught up with husband Ryan Reynolds in between interviews, and wore a  navy sequin basketball-style vest, emblazoned with the word ‘Monster’, which she paired with wide trousers, red stilettos and matching red coat. Fierce.

Finally, for her last outfit of the day (you still with me?), Blake went for a dazzling silver dress with metallic chain detailing, teamed with strappy sandals and elegant white duster coat.

Over and out.

Puerto Rico Warns of ‘Total Shutdown’ If Congress Doesn’t Send Money

Puerto Rico’s treasury secretary on Wednesday warned that the island will have to halt hurricane recovery efforts if Congress doesn’t provide billions in emergency funds by the end of the month. Treasury Secretary Raul Maldonado said $ 1.6 billion the Puerto Rican government had available before Hurricane Maria hit two weeks ago is rapidly disappearing amid ongoing recovery work. “I don’t have any collections, and we are spending a lot of money providing direct assistance for the emergency,” Maldonado was cited as saying by Bloomberg. While President Trump has repeatedly complained about the island’s $ 74 billion debt, Puerto Rican authorities are reportedly more worried about how they will get funds for fuel, salaries for recovery workers, and vital food aid for residents. Maldonado, who said he’s requested between $ 6 billion and $ 8 billion from Congress to last for several months, said the island will face a “total shutdown” on Nov. 1 if the emergency funding request is not approved.

L.A. Clippers and Kaiser Permanente Host Total Health Camp for Boys & Girls Club Keiki

HONOLULU — More than 75 keiki sprinted, jumped, dribbled and shot hoops with Los Angeles Clippers’ Sindarius Thornwell and Jawun Evans at the Kaiser Permanente Total Health Camp at Spalding Clubhouse recently. Sponsored by Kaiser Permanente Hawaii in partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii, the free fitness event was held to teach children about the importance of total health — caring for the body, mind and spirit.

Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii members ages 7 to 13 took turns rotating between different activity stations. Kaiser Permanente physical therapists taught students about injury prevention and warm-up exercises, health educators discussed the importance of healthy hydration and eating, and L.A. Clippers players guided participants in shooting and passing drills. Participants also received healthy snacks, mini basketballs and water bottles as a reminder to incorporate healthy habits into their lifestyle. photo of young boy dribbling a basketball

“Embracing a healthy lifestyle at a young age is critical to the physical, mental and emotional health and development of our keiki,” said Chris K. Hause vice president, Marketing, Sales and Business Development, Kaiser Permanente Hawaii. “We’re grateful for our partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii, and the support of the NBA and L.A. Long Sitting Periods May Be Just as Harmful as Daily Total

A new study finds that it isn’t just the amount of time spent sitting, but also the way in which sitting time is accumulated during the day that can affect risk of early death.

The study, published online September 11, 2017 in Annals of Internal Medicine, found that adults who sit for one to two hours at a time without moving have a higher mortality rate than adults who accrue the same amount of sedentary time in shorter bouts.

Those with the greatest amount of sedentary time—more than 13 hours per day—and who frequently had sedentary bouts of at least 60 to 90 consecutive minutes had a nearly two-fold increase in death risk compared with those who had the least total sedentary time and the shortest sedentary bouts.

“We tend to think of sedentary behavior as just the sheer volume of how much we sit around each day,” said Keith Diaz, PhD, associate research scientist in the Department of Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) and lead investigator of the study. “But previous studies have suggested that sedentary patterns—whether an individual accrues sedentary time through several short stretches or fewer long stretches of time—may have an impact on health.”

The researchers used hip-mounted activity monitors to objectively measure inactivity during waking time over a period of seven days in 7,985 black and white adults over age 45. (The participants were taking part in the REGARDS study, a national investigation of racial and regional disparities in stroke.)

On average, sedentary behavior accounted for 77 percent of the participants’ waking hours, equivalent to more than 12 hours per day. Over a median follow-up period of four years, 340 of the participants died. Mortality risk was calculated for those with various amounts of total sedentary time and various sedentary patterns. Those with the greatest amount of sedentary time—more than 13 hours per day—and who frequently had sedentary bouts of at least 60 to 90 consecutive minutes had a nearly two-fold increase in death risk compared with those who had the least total sedentary time and the shortest sedentary bouts.

The researchers also found that participants who kept most of their sitting bouts to less than 30 minutes had the lowest risk of death. “So if you have a job or lifestyle where you have to sit for prolonged periods of time, we suggest taking a movement break every half hour. This one behavior change could reduce your risk of death, although we don’t yet know precisely how much activity is optimal,” Dr. Diaz said.

The study was the largest to link objectively measured sedentary time and sedentary patterns with mortality risk.

The researchers also found that participants who kept most of their sitting bouts to less than 30 minutes had the lowest risk of death.

“This study adds to the growing literature on how dangerous long periods of sitting are for our health and underscores a growing awareness among clinicians and researchers that sitting really is the new smoking,” said study co-author Monika Safford, MD, chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine and the John J. Kuiper Professor at Weill Cornell Medicine and an internist at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. “We need creative ways to ensure that we not only cut back on the total amount we sit, but also increase regular interruptions to sitting with bursts of activity.” Dr. Safford is the PI on one of the REGARDS ancillary studies and provided the cardiac events data for this paper.

The study is titled “Patterns of sedentary behavior and mortality in U.S. middle-aged and older adults: A national cohort study.”

The other authors are Virginia J. Howard (University of Alabama at Birmingham, Birmingham, AL), Brent Hutto (UAB), Natalie Colabianchi (University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI), John E. Vena (Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, SC), Steven N. Blair (University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC), and Steven P. Hooker (Arizona State University, Phoenix, AZ).

The study was supported by the National Institutes of Health (UO1-NS041588 and R01-NS061846) and the Coca-Cola Company.

The authors report no financial or other conflicts of interest.

Celebrating Continued Growth, Performance and Total Health

Kaiser Permanente’s many milestones and accomplishments in 2016 support the organization’s mission to provide access to high-quality, affordable health care, and to improve the health of our members and the communities it serves. The nation’s largest integrated health care system highlights the best of these stories and efforts in its 2016 Annual Report.

A year of continued growth

The organization’s 2016 membership of 10.7 million members showed expansion across all lines of business. In addition, capital spending of $ 2.8 billion reflected important investments in both technology and facilities to improve member access, care and service.

A national leader in medical excellence and consumer experience

In 2016, 28 Kaiser Permanente hospitals were listed as “high performing” for one or more measures of common or complex care by U.S. News & World Report. Five of Kaiser Permanente’s seven Medicare health plans received an overall rating of 5 stars — the highest possible — from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for 2016. And according to the National Committee for Quality Assurance, Kaiser Permanente health plans were classified as among the best in the nation for consumer experience, prevention and treatment. In addition, all Kaiser Permanente health plans were again rated highest (or tied for highest) in both Medicare and commercial in the areas we serve.

New facilities, new jobs

Kaiser Permanente opened an information technology campus in Atlanta — which will create an estimated 900 new IT jobs by 2019 — and completed two new dental offices in Oregon and 12 new medical offices nationwide.

Investing in community health

At the same time, Kaiser Permanente gave back $ 2.5 billion to provide care for low-income families, support community-based health partnerships, steward environmental initiatives, and conduct and share important medical research.

Innovation is in our DNA

Along the way, the organization continued to advance patient care through innovation and technology. Telehealth has made it more convenient for members to access care and services, with more than half of the visits with members completed “virtually” through email, phone and video.
