How Will The U.S. – China Trade War Affect You?

PRESIDENT TRUMP AGAIN INCREASED TARIFFS ON CHINESE GOODS LAST WEEK. CAN YOU GIVE US A SNAPSHOT OF WHAT HAPPENED?

As you know, the US and China have been engaged in an escalating trade battle since last year. In September, the U.S. imposed 10% tariffs on $ 200 billion worth of goods imported from China, with tariffs rates set to rise to 25% on January 1, 2019. China then retaliated. In the wake of this tit for tat, negotiators from both countries launched trade negotiations, and the January tariff hike was postponed. However, those talks broke down last week, and President Trump raised duties to 25% while announcing the US would consider imposing tariffs on the remaining $ 325 billion worth of goods from China.

CAN YOU REMIND US HOW TARIFFS WORK?

Tariffs are simply a tax on goods imported into the United States. Just like sales tax, tariffs are set as a percentage of the value of any given good. So, when companies or individuals buy goods subject to tariffs, they will have to pay that amount on top of the value of the goods when they enter the United States. Countries impose tariffs for a few reasons: to raise income, to give domestically produced products an advantage, and to penalize a country by making its products more expensive. One thing is certain when it comes to tariffs, Tom: higher tariffs mean higher prices.

IF CONSUMERS ARE GOING TO FACE HIGHER PRICES, WHY DID THE WHITE HOUSE GO DOWN THIS PATH?

Many reports have suggested that President Trump went this route following a decision by China to call for substantial changes to the negotiating text that both countries had been using as a blueprint for a deal. Specifically, China removed language in the draft agreement that would have committed the country to change its laws relating to the theft of U.S. intellectual property and trade secrets, the forced transfer of certain technologies to domestic Chinese firms, and currency manipulation, among other items. The president and U.S. trade negotiators believe that any agreements on these measures and others must be legally binding, and after the changes were made, talks hit a wall.

HOW WILL CONSUMERS FEEL THE PINCH OF THESE NEW DUTIES ON GOODS IMPORTED FROM CHINA?

While American consumers have been affected by the past two tariff hikes on Chinese goods, this round of duties will hit our pocketbooks much harder. The reason? Past hikes have been designed to shield consumers, focusing instead on goods used to make finished products and exemptions for important consumer items such as clothing and children’s products.

However, this latest round does not contain these exclusions, and the additional 15% tariffs will certainly drive up ticket prices. The administration increased to 25% tariffs on a wide swath of household goods. Everything from pet toys to food, power tools to furniture is subject to these new duties and will get more expensive. The prices of consumer electronics and auto parts in particular are expected to shoot up. At the end of the day, these tariffs will cost every American money.

WILL CONSUMERS SEE PRICES HIKES OF 25%?

While prices are certain to go up, consumers are unlikely to see prices rise by 25%. This is because retailers will try to absorb or redistribute some of the cost increase. We saw this is in January 2018, when the administration levied a 20% duty on washing machines. According to the Wall Street Journal, prices of both washing machines and dryers rose by about 12%, because appliance manufacturers spread the cost increase across both items.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT GOING FORWARD?

That remains unclear, Tom. US and Chinese officials both said they continue to seek a trade deal. But at this point, there are no talks scheduled and the tariffs remain in place. If China retaliates for this latest round of US tariffs, it could very well inflict more pain on US manufacturers and farmers, and slow the US economy. Let’s hope this trade battle gets resolved, for the sake of consumers and the economy as a whole.

Bernie Sanders Has a Message for Trump on Trade

As workers’ rights have become a focus for the 2020 presidential campaigns, Senator Bernie Sanders has called on President Donald Trump to protect those rights in the deal to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), but whether that can happen and if it will be a boon for agricultural and auto workers in the U.S. remains to be seen.

Sanders was speaking at Macomb Community College in Warren, Mich., at a campaign rally on April 13 when he said “the NAFTA treaty that Trump re-negotiated with Mexico will still allow companies like General Motors to send our jobs to Mexico.”

Sanders issued a challenge to the president: “For once in your life, keep your campaign promises…go back to the drawing board.” He implored the president not to send the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) to Congress without ensuring there are “strong and swift” measures to keep jobs from leaving the country.

In October 2018, Trump announced the new agreement after a year of several rounds of talks between the parties to replace the estimated $ 24.8 trillion NAFTA. The talks were not without their problems as Trump was publicly tweeting statements like: “Trade Wars are good and easy to win.”

CBC News had even reported at the time that the negotiations were tense, to the point of making the Americans “uncomfortable” with the demands they were being asked to put forward by the administration.

Those tense talks may have played a role in leading to an agreement which would only have a small increase–.35%–to U.S. economy and an even smaller one to the labor market, per a report by the independent International Trade Commission.

Though the report said the new USMCA would “have a positive impact” for manufacturing and services industries and there would be some extra production in the auto industry, U.S. production is set to be more expensive and wages are set to drop. The real opportunity for growth in the agreement would lie in removing “uncertainty” in “cross-border e-commerce, services and investments,” according to the Washington Post.

Part of that involves job security and protections for American workers, particularly those in the agriculture and auto sectors, like those in Michigan which Sanders actually won against Hillary Clinton in the 2016 primary.

However, Trump ultimately won Michigan later that year, partly due to the fervor over the president’s repeated comments labeling the free trade agreement as “unfair” to Americans. He later repeatedly called NAFTA the “worst trade deal ever made.”

Sanders’ comments and his previous statements on the matter appear to be more about holding the president accountable on his many campaign trail promises to bring “hundreds of thousands of jobs” to American workers.

Josh Orton, senior adviser and policy director for the Sanders campaign, told Fortune, “Washington has tried to sell corporate-written trade deals like NAFTA to American workers, making false promises of jobs and economic growth for all” for decades and the candidate wants to end that with the USMCA.

He said Trump has only “pretended to be a fighter for workers…and his attempts to renegotiate NAFTA, which contains giveaways to pharmaceutical corporations and still lacks real enforcement of worker protections, shows that he’s rolled over to corporate outsourcers and pharmaceutical corporations.”

But there may be procedural limitations to take into account.

Eric Farnsworth, vice president of the Washington, D.C.-based think tank Council of the Americas and Americas Society, told Fortune Sanders’ call may not even matter. Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) have said “publicly and repeatedly that the negotiated text is closed.”

Farnsworth noted there may be some room to change the way the legislation is implemented or to amend with certain “side understandings…but efforts to re-open the text itself would be strongly resisted and likely end in frustration.”

Karen Hansen-Kuhn, director of trade and global governance at the Institute for Agricultural and Trade Policy, told Fortune it is actually possible to re-open the USMCA negotiations and that Sanders’ call out of the president “echoes” that of labor unions, environmentalists, and members of Congress.

She contended the changes these groups and lawmakers have asked for would not just protect American workers but also those in Mexico and would “raise environmental standards and ensure that the new agreement doesn’t lock in high prices for biologic medicines.”

Coupled with changes lobbied for by consumer protection activists on labeling meat products falling within the agreement, Hansen-Kuhn said “these changes would reduce incentives for companies to outsource jobs.”

However, she also noted none of the push for changes in labor protection language mean anything if strong enforcement of the terms are built in as well. Both she and Dr. Shannon K. O’Neil, vice president and senior fellow for Latin America Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, agreed: Mexico has been setting a good example for that.

“The best way forward is the labor reform Mexico is in the process of passing through their legislature,” O’Neil told Fortune. “It will do much of what Democrats have been demanding. And it has a high chance of happening as it fits with President [Andres Manuel] Lopez Obrador’s own domestic plans and priorities.”

She said the most effective way for Sanders and others to really protect American jobs and the worker is to make U.S. companies more competitive through investments in infrastructure, education, and research and development, citing the independent report showed the real advantages in the new USMCA only occur when there is confidence and certainty in American companies’ competitiveness around the world.

But Hansen-Kuhn said there need to be more significant changes to the new USMCA if Americans do not want to see “transnational businesses continue to pit workers in each country against each other–as they have during the 25 years since the original NAFTA was passed.”

She argued changes to sections on patents of medications, “giveaways to the fossil fuel sector,” and increasing consumer protections across the board are continuing to be called for as well.

Alyshia G?lvez, Ph.D, a Latin American studies professor at City University of New York, said she is not very optimistic about having these changes taken into account for a more “human-scaled trade deal that takes into consideration the needs of families and communities,” particularly for farmers in all three countries.

But she said there is some hope, since Democrats, who control the U.S. House of Representatives, seem unwilling to put the agreement up for a vote without these changes.

It may just be a question of timing.

Should the USMCA negotiations be re-opened for better job protections and other matters, Farnsworth said it could push ratification of the agreement well into 2020 and possibly too close to the November elections–“never an optimal time to pass any trade legislation much less any as politically complicated as USMCA.”

NBA trade deadline: Six buyers and four sellers to watch

Because of roster flaws, every team currently projected to make the playoffs (except the Golden State Warriors) could be listed in the buy category heading into the Feb. 7 NBA trade deadline. However, because the market is saturated with more buyers than sellers, finding a deal will be challenging. Also consider that every playoff team is looking for a 6-foot-7 wing who can defend, not disrupt chemistry and make an occasional 3. Sounds easy, but those players are rarely available in trades. "Last year, there were at least 12 teams who were proposed sellers, not including Cleveland, who felt pressure to make a trade to appease LeBron [James]," one general manager told ESPN. "This year, that number is half. Factor in also that the deadline is pushed up two weeks from the last Thursday in February, so more teams think that making the playoffs is obtainable." Trade routes that shaped world history

Trade routes are routes that are used on a widely known basis to transport goods to and from different places. Some trade routes across the world are more significant than others, due to the course that they take or the goods that are transported along them; some of them are important culturally because they were used to experience things you can’t buy, like religion. Here are some of the trade routes that shaped world history.

Amber Road

The Amber Road has been used to transport goods since the year 3,000 B.C. Amber might not seem like it has any significance to us, but it has actually been incredibly useful and valuable over the years. The Romans valued amber very highly for decorative purposes, and it played a big role in the design of their homes, palaces and other buildings, which we have been able to discover today thanks to Amber’s long lasting quality. The ‘Amber Highway’ as it came to be called has also been witness to a lot of deaths, following the rise of demand for Amber in the 12th and 13th centuries, where people would kill merchants who were transporting the precious stone.

Silk Road

The Silk Road is not just one of the most famous trade routes in the world, it’s also one of the oldest, and its use dates back to as far as the first century B.C! It was used by the ancient civilizations of China and by the Roman Empire. At first, the route was used to transport a lot of practical and luxury items, ranging from anything between wool and gold, but over time, more important things were transported down this route; knowledge, trade secrets, art, and religion. Of course, one of the most famous products transported down this trade route was silk, which started during the Han Dynasty. The Chinese were so protective of their trade route that they constructed the Great Wall of China, just to keep it safe!

The Salt Route

Salt might just seem like an everyday household commodity now, but hundreds and thousands of years ago, salt was incredibly precious – so much so that in the Roman age, it actually used to make up a portion of people’s wages. It is used for food and for flavoring, to preserve things, and to heal things with its antiseptic qualities. It is so versatile and used to be so difficult to get hold of that salt routes were crucial. There were several trade routes known as ‘salt roads’ such as Via Saleria in Italy and the Old Salt Route in Germany.

Tea Horse Road

There’s no denying we all like a cup of tea every now and then (daily if you’re British), but do you know how dangerous transporting tea used to be? The Tea Horse Road is one of the most precarious of all the world famous trade routes, with over 6,000 miles of winding roads through mountains and over rivers. Of course, one of the main commodities transported along this route was Chinese tea, but it was also the route for trading Tibetan Warhorses too.

These trade routes have all changed the world around us, in one way or another. Without some of these famous (and often dangerous) trade routes, we wouldn’t have commodities such as tea or salt in our homes today. How strange would that be?
