BWW Review: Duncan Sheik, Steven Sater and Jessie Nelson’s ALICE BY HEART Turns Blitz-Ravaged London into Wonderland

According to this reviewer’s admittedly casual bit of Googling, the first Broadway production based on Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ was playwright Alice Gerstenberg’s version, which opened at the Booth in 1915. But undoubtedly there were many other variations before then.

James Beard Award-Winning Bar Cure Turns 10

Kevin O’Mara

I don’t really know how I came to be writing this. I should probably be living under a bridge trying to figure out how to pay off my debts but instead I’m the co-owner of New Orleans craft cocktail bar Cure. How we not only stayed in business but won a James Beard Award is a minor miracle and is truly thanks to our amazing guests, our talented team and a good deal of luck.

I started working on what would eventually become Cure back in 2004, while bartending in Manhattan. I didn’t always plan to be in the bar business, because at the time I didn’t think it was a real career. However, one night I remember meandering through lower Manhattan thinking about my future. As fate would have it, I walked past a tiny old bar in SoHo called the Red Bench and at that moment I asked myself, “Why can’t I open a bar?” The obvious answer was “I can,” but there was one problem; I didn’t actually know how to open a bar or any kind of business for that matter.

In late August of 2005, my world changed (although, not nearly to the extent of so many others) when Hurricane Katrina made landfall in New Orleans. Suddenly, I knew I wasn’t where I was supposed to be; I needed to go back home to New Orleans where I was born and raised. I can’t explain it, but if you were from Nola and didn’t live there anymore, you knew the city you loved needed its sons and daughters to return. So, by December of 2006, I was back in town and ready to start working on opening my dream bar with my childhood friend, Matthew Kohnke.

GoFundMe Border Wall Campaign Implodes, Turns to Kris Kobach and Sheriff Clarke

Getty/Reuters

A decorated veteran who raised more than $ 20 million to finance construction of a wall along the southern U.S. border has announced that he will instead use the money to finance a new nonprofit group that will build the wall itself—or at least a couple miles of it.

Brian Kolfage’s crowdfunding campaign on the website GoFundMe went viral in December, before news outlets uncovered previous instances in which the triple-amputee veteran appeared to have pocketed funds raised through similar, if far smaller, campaigns billed as efforts to assist wounded warriors.

Now Kolfage, a prolific operator of conspiracy theory Facebook pages, has recruited a team of prominent figures in President Donald Trump’s orbit to run a new 501(c)(4) nonprofit, named We Fund The Wall, to do some wall construction of its own. The new group’s board, Kolfage announced on Friday, includes Erik Prince, the founder of infamous military contract Blackwater; David Clarke, the former scandal-plagued sheriff of Milwaukee County; Fox News contributor Sara Carter; Tom Tancredo, an immigration hardliner and former Colorado congressman; and former Kansas Secretary of State and voter fraud crusader Kris Kobach

Ariana Grande, Kanye West Feud Over Mental Health Turns Serious as Pete Davidson Posts Concerning Message

A Twitter spat between Ariana Grande and Kanye West over mental health took a serious turn on Saturday after Pete Davidson, an SNL star and Grande’s ex-fiance, posted a message on social media that some took as suicidal.

The tiff between the two musicians began when Grande waded into a feud between West and the music star Drake yesterday.

Drake and West and have notoriously had a contentious relationship since at least 2011, according to ELLE. Their feud was apparently reignited in September, when Drake made a snide reference to the sneakers West designs in a song. Then on December 13, Drake requested sampling a portion of Kanye’s song in one of his compositions. Soon afterward, Kanye launched into a Twitter rant that lasted more than 100 tweets.

Grande responded to the very public dispute with a teasing tweet of her own.

“Guys, I know there are grown men arguing online rn but miley and I dropping our beautiful, new songs tonight so if y’all could please jus behave for just like a few hours so the girls can shine that’d be sick thank u,” Grande wrote on Twitter, which she later deleted.

West did not take kindly to Grande’s intrusion and suggested that she was inserting herself into the beef to promote her new song, “Imagine,” which released Friday.

Grande then apologized for being insensitive about West’s mental health, but fired back at him for suggesting she was promoting herself.

“With all due respect, I don’t need to use anyone to promote anything. period. I was making a comment ab what men were doing at the time v.s. women. It was a joke which I understand now was probably insensitive. I apologize if I was in any way triggering and I hope u feel well today,” Grande tweeted. She later deleted her tweet.

This morning, Davidson appeared to side with West in an Instagram post.

“Bravo Kanye West for standing up for yourself and speaking out against [sic] mental health,” his post read. “I can’t explain to you enough how difficult and scary it is to be honest about stuff like this. We need people like Kanye. No one should ever point fingers at you for your bravery in speaking about mental health. I’m seriously disgusted.”

A few hours later, however, Davidson published another message that struck an even more serious tone.

“I really don’t want to be on this earth anymore. I’m doing my best to stay here for you but I actually don’t know how much longer I can last,” Davidson wrote.

Davidson, who has spoken out frequently about having bipolar disorder and suicidal tendencies, appeared to suggest that he was feeling suicidal. Soon afterward, he deleted both messages.

Earlier this month, Davidson wrote on Instagram:

“I’ve been getting online bullied and in public by people for 9 months. I’ve spoken about BPD and being suicidal publicly only in the hopes that it will help bring awareness and help kids like myself who don’t want to be on this earth,” he wrote. “No matter how hard the internet or anyone tries to make me kill myself. I won’t. I’m upset I even have to say this.”

In since-deleted tweets, Grande apologized for being insensitive about mental health issues.

“Man I’m so sorry I told a dumb joke. I really didn’t mean any harm. All I want everyone to be healthy and happy. so desperately,” she tweeted.

Soon afterwards, she tweeted seemingly at Davidson: “I’m downstairs and I’m not going anywhere if you need anyone or anything. I know u have everyone u need and that’s not me, but I’m here too.”

TMZ reported that she had made her way to 30 Rock in Manhattan, where SNL is filmed, in order to try and see Davidson.

Davidson was accounted for at SNL and “fine,” according to the New York Times.

Jon Stewart Turns the Tables on Stephen Colbert: ‘Donald Trump, Great President or Greatest President?’

Scott Kowalchyk/CBS

Three years into his stint hosting The Late Show, Stephen Colbert is finally starting to feel “a little bit like Jon Stewart.”

For a change of pace Tuesday night, CBS aired a pre-taped episode of the late-night show in which the tables were turned as Colbert sat in the guest chair and took questions from friends like Jake Tapper, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Kerry Washington, Charlamagne tha God and most significantly, his former boss at The Daily Show.

Stewart began his interview by asking Colbert, “Who the hell do you think you are?” That prompted the host’s admission that he is beginning to feel like he is able to pick up Stewart’s mantle as the most trusted man in political comedy.

Karl Lagerfeld Turns Champs-Élysées Red for the Holidays

SEEING RED: Karl Lagerfeld switched on the Christmas lights Thursday night on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées, bathing the street known as “the most beautiful avenue in the world” in red light.
The designer, who helms Chanel and Fendi, in addition to his own Karl Lagerfeld brand, arrived in his Rolls-Royce shortly before 7 p.m., flanked by his personal assistant Sébastien Jondeau. He was greeted by Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo and Bruno Pavlovsky, president of Chanel SAS, alongside a phalanx of the French luxury brand’s senior staff.

After a 10-second countdown, Lagerfeld and Hidalgo, wearing a gold-embroidered black tweed jacket from Chanel’s 2010 Paris-Byzance Métiers d’Art collection, flipped the switch on the holiday decorations at 7:15 p.m., setting off an explosion of metallic confetti.

Depop Turns Up the Volume With Nineties Rave Culture Exhibition

BACK IN TIME: A Spice Girls reunion — minus Victoria Beckham — has signaled the Nineties are here to stay and Depop, the online marketplace aimed at Gen Z, is celebrating the flip side of the decade’s music scene with a one–night–only exhibition on Wednesday dedicated to rave culture.
Depop has partnered with Youth Club, a nonprofit organization that preserves youth culture, and London’s NTS radio for the exhibition, called “Wear the Movement.” “Depop and Youth Club are both about youth culture and the importance of self-expression and acceptance is at the core of Depop,” said Maria Raga, chief executive officer of Depop.
The event will be held at Corsica Studios in south London and there will be imagery, vintage clothing and accessories on display, which have been sourced by Depop’s community of vintage dealers and sellers.
Clothing items, including vintage Moschino, Kappa and Adidas, on show and for sale, are exact matches of pieces shown in archival photos provided by Youth Culture.
The Depop community is made up of more than 10 million users, who are “overwhelmingly” Gen Z, said Raga. “But they are very interested in all things Nineties, from both the buyer and the seller side.”
She added that Nineties rave culture was

Book ‘I’m A Brilliant Little Black Boy!’ Turns Into an Animated Series

In 2016, first-time author Joshua Drummond and his mom Betty K. Bynum co-wrote I’m A Brilliant Little Black Boy, an illustrated children’s book that aims to address the void in animated network programming targeted to African American children ages 6-11 years old. Now media heavyweight Reginald Hudlin of Hudlin Entertainment has commissioned the illustrated children’s book I’m A Brilliant Little Black Boy! for a new animation series entitled Brilliant Boys. “There are no animated series for our boys right now,” says Drummond. “It’s time to address that. I grew up seeing limited reflections of myself, especially in animation form. Today, there aren’t any animated series starring ordinary black boys just being cool and doing fun things. It’s my intention to help remedy that with Brilliant Boys!

With praise from ESPN’s The Undefeated and the Steve Harvey Show, the book garnered support from Academy Award-winning actor Denzel Washington, Samuel L. Jackson, as well as Academy Award-nominated filmmaker John Singleton—all of whom provided quotes for the book’s cover. To turn the book’s message into a movement, the book included a viral video featuring appearances by actor Vin Diesel, Michael Ealy, Blair Underwood, and Omari Hardwick to name a few.

black boy

Joshua Drummond

In the midst of Hudlin fielding network interest for the vibrant series, we caught up with Drummond to learn more about his commitment to positive representation for black boys as well as how he landed A-list celebrity support.

After noticing the scarcity of books with positive messages available for young black boys, how long did it take you to turn your ideas into a book series?

This book series process took over a year. I wrote during my spare time after school hours for college. I had to make sacrifices. I had to replace partying with friends with staying indoors and writing as well as balancing class and studying schedule so I was able to complete the writing in two months’ time. My family company, Dreamtitle Publishing contacted illustrator Brian McGee and he was all aboard for the illustrations.

The creative phase was the easy part, while the business phase was a learning experience for me. It’s a three-tier process: developing, creating, and marketing. And it’s a lot to each step. I was thankful to have a creative and business-savvy mom, Betty K. Bynum, to mentor me through the process.

How did you gain support from A-list celebrities such as Denzel Washington?

Celebrities in the industry who have an entrepreneurial mindset really understood the purpose of my book I’m a Brilliant Little Black Boy! They felt the message of the book and gravitated toward it. Being born into black Hollywood was a blessing that comes with many perks. Long before I was a writer, my father, Warren Drummond, brought me over to John Singleton’s house to hang out with him and his son. Our families always had a genuine bond, so John was all for it when he heard about the book series. I met Denzel Washington and Samuel L. Jackson during my childhood on projects my parents worked with them on. I always looked up to them as hardworking black actors. My dad mentioned the book to Denzel while working together on Fences, and he and his wife Pauletta gave us support!  I mean, that’s like getting Barack AND Michelle!

You wrote the show bible for Brilliant Boys! along with the 13-episode summaries in tandem with your dad—celebrated film & TV storyboard artist Warren Drummond. What key messages would you like young boys to take away from your book as well as the animated series?

First, giving credit to my mom, Betty as a producer on this project for having the initial original idea and pushing us forward to create a series based on this book—a lot of inspiration came from Reginald Hudlin’s past and current works. Bebe’s Kids was a well-written and produced show and the same goes for the Proud FamilyThe Boondocks is probably one of my favorite animations of all time, and his work on the Black Panther graphic novel series is some pretty epic stuff. My children’s book focused on one character and his friends were his “boys” for the most part. So the goal now for the Brilliant Boys animation is to focus on a whole group of fun kids with a bit of parental-shouldering in a format similar to those works I just mentioned. Many black children out there come from single-parent households, no parents, and many other frustrating circumstances. I want this show to be fun for them as something they can turn on to see themselves in a fun positive way doing things that they may be thinking of doing or things they can get inspired to do, or just seeing kids that look like them and their friends or family. But still providing simple and clear stories kids can relate to. Just some real fun with jokes and stories—and I learned that from Reggie Hudlin!
