Yes, You can Make Money Playing Video Games. Here Are 7 Ways to Do It

Frederick Aldeco was the youngest of three boys who loved to game.

Growing up, he and his brothers first fought over who could play the Nintendo, then the Super Nintendo, then the PlayStation — he could only play when his older brothers let him.

But then he got his own Game Boy. It came with Pokémon Yellow, and everything changed.

“I could play anytime I wanted to without them having an issue,” Aldeco said.

Nearly two decades later, Aldeco, 29, still loves Pokémon — so much so that he runs a Pokémon news channel on YouTube under the moniker DaddyGamer Fred.

Besides that, he’s done what most gamers dream of doing: Making money playing video games. While it’s not his full-time gig, Aldeco said his content has earned him up to $ 300 a week.

Over the years, gaming has become increasingly popular with almost all age groups. The Entertainment Software Association has tracked gamers with an annual survey since 1997, and its latest data show that 64% of households own regularly played gaming systems. Perhaps what’s more surprising is that association research shows the typical gamer may not be who you think. In the U.S., more women play video games than teenage boys.

And if you belong to this new wave of gamers, you’ve probably thought at some point, “There’s got to be a way to get paid for this.”

Turns out, there are plenty.

How to Make Money Playing Video Games

These recommendations require actually playing a video game to earn you cash. You may need some in-depth knowledge or skills for most of the following methods — but not all of them. So don’t worry if your gaming abilities aren’t esports-ready just yet.

1. Participate in Video Game Tournaments

The League of Legends World Championship is an esports tournament that can earn elite winners millions of dollars and millions of fans, but most gamers are not at that level and never will be.

Instead, opt for amateur tournaments to earn $ 5 or $ 10 per match. GamerSaloon is one video-gaming site where you can do just that. Anyone 18 years or older can create a free account and start joining tournaments. The more you win, the more you earn.

The website is open to gamers around the world, but the system is based on the U.S. dollar. All other currencies are accepted but will be converted automatically.

Popular games on the site include NBA 2k19, Fortnite, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, UFC 3, FIFA 19 and others.

2. Become a Beta Tester

Millions of people now pay for video games before they are released by pre-ordering them.

Wouldn’t it be amazing if video game companies would pay you instead to play their video games before the release date?

Actually, that’s a thing.

Several companies pay people to beta test video games to collect feedback and work out the kinks before the mass market gets its hands on it.

For the lucky gamers who live near Redmond, Washington, Nintendo partners with two staffing agencies to beta test games on-site. Unfortunately, there are no remote testing options available.

For those living outside the area, there’s VMC Consulting, a tech company that specializes in quality assurance and support. It runs a Global Beta Test Network, which tests major multiplayer video games for consoles and PCs before their release. Applicants can live anywhere, must be at least 18 years old and must use Discord (a chat messaging system for gamers) to give feedback.

3. Start Streaming

No, not on Netflix. In the video-game world, streaming has a different meaning. It refers to a live feed of someone playing a video game. Streaming services allow the streamer to interact directly with the audience via a chatroom system. Viewers can also tip the streamer in real time.

There are several free streaming services to choose from, the most popular being Twitch.tv. You don’t have to be a pro to stream, either. You just have to be entertaining. One streamer, Cory Michael — aka King Gothalion — turned his streaming hobby into a six-figure salary.

Michael said the main three sources of income come from subscriptions, tips directly from your viewers and ad revenue.

Even if you don’t manage millions of subscribers, streaming could still get you tips here and there, and once your channel becomes more popular, you could land a paid partnership with the streaming service.

4. Create a Business on Second Life

Fifteen years later, Second Life is still kicking with about 750,000 monthly users.

Second Life is a video game that was slated to revolutionize the internet (before social media came along). But it’s hard to call Second Life a video game. It’s more than that.

There aren’t any overt objectives. No bosses to beat. No princesses to rescue. Instead, all of its content is user-generated, from the avatars themselves to the worlds they inhabit. In Second Life, people date, have children, build houses and travel to replicas of famous landmarks.

People spend years carving out a piece of digital paradise. Some hire real-life experts to help get it just right. In-game specialists can make bank, too. Architects, publishers and fashion designers have used their industry knowledge to bolster their virtual businesses. There’s even a journalist, Wagner James Au, who works inside Second Life and reports on in-game artists and entrepreneurs.

Second Life spawned the first video game business millionaire, Ailin Graef, and she’s not the only person to make a fortune with the game.

There are multiple people and businesses that have made over a million U.S. dollars in Second Life over the years,” said Brett Atwood, Director of Marketing at Linden Labs, the company that created Second Life. “Many are still active.”

Since Second Life’s launch in 2003, players have spent billions of dollars of real money on in-game currency called Linden Dollars (or L$ ). The exchange rate currently is about 250 L$ to $ 1. Users can go to the Second Life exchange store to purchase L$ , then use L$ for in-game services. The level of customization is incredibly granular, and users are eager to pay L$ for real-life experts to apply their knowledge to the virtual world.

Atwood said the big bucks are usually in virtual real estate and fashion.

For other business ideas and examples of Second Life entrepreneurs, check out its business site.

5. Coach Others in How to Play

Are you a Starcraft god? A Fortnite legend? Share your strategies with us noobs for cash.

You can teach beginners basic lingo or coach seasoned players on the latest competitive strategies. Some online tutoring websites, Superprof for example, are general tutoring platforms that happen to allow video-game listings.

However, there are some other options that are tailored specifically for gaming lessons. Gamer Sensei is one such platform that hires senseis, aka coaches, to teach lessons in specific games, including League of Legends, Counter-Strike, DOTA 2 and — of course — Fortnite.

Making a sensei profile is free. Senseis set their own schedules and prices and have no hourly time commitments.

Another option is Gameflip Gigs. Gameflip is a video game marketplace, where people can buy, sell and trade video games and related content.

The company recently launched Gigs, which is still in beta but is open for applications.

The gigs revolve around four types of services:

  • Create: Good at graphic design? You can craft the perfect avatar or graphic for a gamer’s profile or online store.
  • Entertain: If you’re hilarious, get paid for it by joining people’s in-game parties and having fun.
  • Coach: Teach others the way to victory.
  • Carry: Some people just like winning. You provide that service.

During the beta, Gigs members have a $ 1,000 limit on what they can earn.

Other Ways to Make Money With Video Games

A person holds video game boxes and a controller.

Maybe you aren’t comfortable with turning your hobby into a job. You want to keep it sacred and fun. That’s all right, too. You can still make plenty of money with gigs related to video gaming that don’t require you to play them.

6. Sell Video Games for Cash

Do you blast through video games? Are you constantly in search of new ones to conquer? Then you should consider selling your used video games once you’re finished.

Your pile of old games can fund your next virtual adventure, get you some quick cash to make rent, or if you’re like Aldeco, help fund your move from the U.S. to Switzerland.

The Penny Hoarder’s guide walks you through the best technique to sell video games through GameStop and get up to 50% extra cash for your games. I turned a $ 72.40 cash offer for a few of my video games and a controller into $ 111.14.

If you’d rather not make the trek to GameStop, Gameflip allows users to buy and sell their video games and gift cards online.

That’s what Aldeco used to downsize before his move overseas. He sold off all his physical games and consoles but kept the handheld devices — his trusty Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita.

Alternatively, you can sell games on eBay, but you may be stuck with a bunch of additional fees if you don’t meet the site’s minimum seller service standards.

7. Make Video Game Guides

Perhaps you’ve played a game for so long that you’ve discovered all the Easter eggs, all the glitches and all the best farming spots.

You can create guides to help people do the same, whether they’re articles or YouTube videos.

Stephen Robinson, better known by the moniker Ratty Star, creates YouTube guides for a post-apocalyptic role playing game, Fallout 76.

“I have had some success,” Robinson said, “with a few videos getting a few thousand views, with my highest currently at 63,000.”

Several major gaming publications accept freelance pitches for video game guides and commentary, too. So if you prefer writing to video editing, give IGN, Kotaku, Escapist Magazine, Game Informer and GamesRadar+ a shot.

If you’re not a seasoned freelancer, we have a guide that walks you through how to come up with story ideas, pitch to editors and ultimately make money as a freelance writer. In the meantime, you can build up your portfolio by writing for GameSkinny, which will pay you based on how many views your articles get.

Neither Robinson nor Aldeco is famous. They have about 2,500 followers between the two of them. Getting famous really isn’t the point.

“I’m doing it because I’m enjoying the creative process,” Aldeco said. “Whenever the money comes, of course it’s a plus, but [it’s] not truly the end goal for me.”

Jussie Smollett Believes the Two Persons of Interest on Surveillance Footage Are His Attackers, Police Say They’ve Been Identified But Are Not Suspects [Video]

Jussie Smollett is convinced the two men in the surveillance photo released by police earlier this month are the two men who attacked him.

via TMZ:

Jussie appeared on ‘GMA’ Thursday, and was clearly frustrated some people don’t believe his story.

The 2 men in the surveillance photo are considered “persons of interest” but not suspects by the Chicago PD. Cops tell us the video shows the 2 men on the other side of the street from Jussie, but there is a 60-second gap in the video.

Jussie went on to explain why he refused to give his phone to cops so they could validate his story that he was talking to his manager at the time of the attack and the manager heard it go down. Jussie explained he had various private photos, videos and phone numbers and did not want that data compromised.

He tells Robin Roberts about his injuries and why he kept the rope around his neck until police arrived.

In a statement released Thursday, police said they identified the two people in the surveillance photos and tracked their movements using cameras, public transportation records and corroborating info provided by Smollett.

Anthony Guglielmi, spokesman for Chicago Police Department, said the two persons of interest are not suspect and have not been charged. Police said there is no evidence that they were involved in the attack.

Video: Watch Barry Manilow Perform Copacabana at Fashion Week

Michael Kors brought some additional star power to the finale of his fall 2019 show: the iconic American singer, Barry Manilow.
After the last model took her walk on the runway, the house lights dimmed and much to everyone’s delight, a curtain was drawn back revealing Manilow decked out in a bedazzled orange blazer. And there it was, that iconic first line: “Her name was Lola…”

The singer began singing his hit song, “Copacabana,” as models took their finale walk. They then made their way to the stage to join Manilow, including Bella Hadid who took the singer’s hand and swayed with him back and forth.
The rest of the models took their position around the stage, dancing together as Manilow showed off his own moves. The runway at Cipriani Wall Street was decorated with an array of disco balls, fitting for the singer who got his start in the Sixties.

As Manilow finished the number, he was joined by Kors and model Patti Hansen, who hugged and kissed the singer as the audience gave him a standing ovation.
While the performance was a surprise to guests, Kors had hinted at something special on the brand’s Instagram account an hour prior to the show, informing

Floyd Mayweather Sr. Caught The Fade In Boxing Training Session [Video]

The father of Floyd Mayweather Jr. made his mark in boxing as both a professional fighter and most notably as a trainer. However, a training session didn’t go Floyd Sr.’s way recently and he caught a fade but appeared to be fine shortly after.

TMZ Sports reports:

Floyd Mayweather Sr. — a former pro boxer who became one of the top trainers in the world — was at his son’s TMT boxing gym in Vegas this week, where he decided to spar with one of the younger guys.

It started off great … with Floyd Sr. stickin’ and movin’ and throwing some pretty quick shots — but, when the other guy started to fight back, it didn’t go well for the old man.

Floyd took a few clean shots to the head — sending him flying backward … and ended with the elder Mayweather lying flat on his back with his feet up in the air.

Before the jokes fly, Floyd Sr. is 66 years old and probably in better shape than men half his age. Anyone can catch the hands and it was just his time.

Comedian Phoebe Robinson called out comedy clubs for allowing sexual predators to perform in a take-no-prisoners Instagram video

Comedian Phoebe Robinson called out comedy clubs for allowing sexual predators to perform in a take-no-prisoners Instagram video

Comedian Phoebe Robinson called out comedy clubs for allowing sexual predators to perform in a take-no-prisoners Instagram video

After the #MeToo movement uncovered sexual harassment and abuse allegations against dozens of powerful men, many wondered how these accusations would affect the accused. A little more than a year later, some of these men, like Louis C.K., have already started to return to work. And in a January 23rd Instagram post, comedian Phoebe Robinson called out comedy clubs for allowing alleged rapists and predators to continue to have a platform.

In her video, Robinson revealed that she had recently been scheduled to perform a set at a comedy club, only to discover when she arrived that there was a “surprise, drop-in comedian” who had been accused of rape. The 2 Dope Queens host said she left, and she urged comedy clubs to do better.

“Comedy clubs, there of course is no HR, but we have to do better,” she said. “We can’t have alleged rapists, sexual predators, abusers performing on the show. It’s not safe for the comedians. It’s not safe for the audience. It’s f-cking disrespectful to the victims. And enough is enough. You can’t have those people on these shows, so knock it off, it’s not okay. Have some f-cking respect for the victims. This is disgusting behavior, and it’s gotta stop.”

View this post on Instagram

Do better, comedy clubs, because I’ve had enough.

A post shared by Phoebe Robinson (@dopequeenpheebs) on

Robinson’s message comes at a critical time. For all the progress the #MeToo movement has helped to achieve, most accused rapists never face legal repercussions. According to RAINN, only 46 out of every 1,000 rapes lead to arrest, and only 4.6 end with the rapist imprisoned. And in many cases, men like C.K. (who has openly admitted to sexually harassing women) return to work despite their misconduct.

Giving sexual abusers a platform as if literally nothing happened ignores the trauma and experiences of their victims—and there’s simply no excuse. We’re so glad Robinson is speaking out about this. Now, let’s hope comedy clubs actually listen.

Say What Now? KFC Debuts a Gravy-Scented Candle [Video]

We’ve seen our fair share of wacky-smelling candles, but KFC is adding one more to the mix.

The company has announced the limited-release of a gravy-scented candle.

via NYP:

According to a KFC spokesman, the “staggeringly nose stimulating” candle will “fill your home with the incredible aroma of KFC gravy.”

The savory scent was created by a brand-trusted perfumer, This is Local London reported.

“Initially the different ingredients within the gravy were split into their constituent parts and fragrances matched to each. Then the scent was built component by component in the similar ratios as KFC’s iconic gravy,” the perfumer said. “The artisanal approach to creating the candles was crucial to ensure the familiar and evocative aroma of gravy was perfectly captured.”

Sounds tasty.

However, before you start clearing a space on your mantel for the saucy fragrance, the limited-edition item is only available in the U.K. for the first 230 fans who apply to own the (probably) highly-coveted KFC Gravy Candle.

It probably smells better than their food actually tastes.

Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings” video appropriates Black culture, and we have to talk about it

Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings” video appropriates Black culture, and we have to talk about it

Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings” video appropriates Black culture, and we have to talk about it

On January 17th, pop star Ariana Grande dropped a video for her new single, “7 Rings,” a hip-hop-inspired joint about all of the joys of disposable income. Some of my Twitter timeline consisted of people candidly and comically talking about capitalism and how Grande’s wealth made them feel. Others continued stanning the singer as usual. But an overwhelming amount of Black women were not amused by Grande’s latest work. Rather, they were offended and taken aback by her use of Black culture to boost her sound.

The video, which is currently the #1 trending video on YouTube and has accumulated over 15 million views as of this article, starts off with a pink-tinted scene starring Grande and her pastel-obsessed, all-female ensemble. The crew dons their hardest, sexiest faces as Grande gives a rundown of her life to the tune of “My Favorite Things” from The Sound Of Music: The tragic events that crushed her, the luxurious adventures she has with “girls with tattoos who like getting in trouble.” But right before the minute mark, “7 Rings” takes a sharp, cringeworthy turn. The trap hi-hats come in, and Grande’s “Pretty Boy Swag” homage kicks off.

Soulja Boy is the mastermind behind “Pretty Boy Swag,” an equally opulent song that was legally sampled by Beyoncé on 2016’s “Hold Up”. Soulja, who is arguably the world’s first social media star, has been the subject of memes and articles galore this week for his interview with  The Breakfast Club, in which he accused Drake of stealing his lyrics and flow. Many have sided with Soulja Boy, saying that he has never received the appropriate accolades for his work, or even the basic respect he deserves for launching the career of one of pop’s biggest names.

For Grande to use his cadence with no credit is not only a slap in the face, but an especially bad business move as well. Soulja Boy is clearly very open when it comes to popping off about unauthorized uses of his material.

It looks like Grande took cues from 2 Chainz, too. His famous Pink Trap House in Atlanta was a safe space for Black people that he used as a free HIV-testing center and a family-friendly haunted house. Grande tried to recreate the energy he ushered in with this innovative space by incorporating a house of her own into “7 Rings,” but it came off as gimmicky. If you know what really happens in trap houses, then you know that they’re much more than party locations for champagne-inspired fantasies. Trap houses are often unfurnished spaces where drugs are produced and sold. Frankly, it is not within Ariana Grande’s range to change that narrative since she has no experience with that lifestyle.

Rihanna’s “Bitch Better Have My Money” and Beyonce’s rap-singing (featured on “APESHIT,” “7/11,” and “Top Off”) also appear to have influenced Grande, as some folks online have pointed out.

New York rapper Princess Nokia also seems to be a victim of Grande’s apparently sticky fingers. In an Instagram video posted January 18th, the 26-year-old artist played “7 Rings” and “Mine,” a song from her 1992 Deluxe album released in 2017, side by side. Nokia then says, “Do that sound familiar to you? Because that sound familiar to me…Ain’t that the little song I made about brown women and their hair?”

Stans are choosing to cape for Grande, saying, “locals don’t even know [who Nokia is]” and “Sorry, who are you??” But if you listen closely to both songs, you can definitely hear similarities in the instrumental composition, the vocal tones of both performers, and even the lyrics. While Nokia talks about her hair by repeating the lyrics, “It’s mine, I bought it,” Grande repeats, “I want it, I got it” and “You like my hair? Gee, thanks, just bought it” in a very similar rhythm.

Ariana Grande has made it known that she works with Victoria Monét and Tayla Parx, two talented Black songwriters who only have a sliver of Grande’s visibility. Their heavy involvement in her career, plus cosigns from other Black celebrities like Pharrell, surely makes it seem that Grande’s ties to Blackness are legitimate. But the fact remains that she is a white woman who has studied AAVE, and she is now using trap house imagery and lifting from the works of lesser known Black rappers without giving them credit. (It’s important to note that, in addition to this appropriation of Black culture, people have criticized Grande’s recent and frequent use of Japanese characters and aesthetics in her promotional imagery.)

I talked with fellow writers Erin McLaughlin and Wanna Thompson about Grande’s lip locks with Blackness. When I asked if this disregard for Black innovation was shocking on Grande’s part, McLaughlin said, “Black American culture is the most popular phenomenon in the world to be honest, so everyone thinks it’s always up for grabs. It’s always been the norm to expect ANYTHING from Black people—whether it’s our time, labor, or creativity. [Grande] being white makes it even worse…How do you look as a white girl with a team full of Black people doing a video like this?”

Thompson was not shocked either. “Everyone knows that Blackness is what’s cool,” she said. “Various artists have experimented with this in the past, and it’s still a formula that white women continue to utilize. From Gwen Stefani to Fergie to Miley Cyrus, Iggy Azalea…the list goes on and on. This tactic will never die, as long as you have an industry supporting the BS.”

“We all know white women are afforded privilege…Ariana is able to hide behind her ‘cute, quirky’ image without much backlash because she’s still viewed as that innocent kid from Nickelodeon,” Thompson continued. “I have called [her] out various times via Twitter in the last few months, and I was met with backlash…”

McLaughlin has similar sentiments: “She’s white. She’s a cute, petite white girl with a clean track record as far as being problematic goes. But also, stan culture has prevented people from being able to separate the art from the artist.”

Ariana, if you’re reading, hear me out. It doesn’t have to be this way.

You don’t have to go down in history as another white girl who turned to rap and Black culture to add sauce to her career. You’re already talented—no one can take that away from you. People love you for how open you are about your life. These moments of appropriation are unnecessary, and Blackness isn’t an act. Detracting from the hard work of Black people won’t get you as far as you hope. And if it does, you better believe that it won’t keep you there. Please stick to the rivers and the lakes that you’re used to.

Spike Lee On Directing The Video For The Killers’ ‘Protest Song’ To Donald Trump

Spike Lee has opened up on how he came to team with rock band The Killers, directing the video for their “Land of the Free” single, which he described as “a great protest song.”

Lee says lead singer Brandon Flowers called him up personally to ask if he would collaborate with the band.

“He saw BlacKkKlansman, said he loved it,” Lee told The Hollywood Reporter. He said, ‘What can you do with this?’

The Las Vegas band released the single on Monday and it serves as a response to Donald Trump’s presidency as well as racism and gun violence in America.

As reported by NME, the video was shot by Lee on location as he traveled along the border between the USA and Mexico late last year to capture footage of migrants and the location of Trump’s proposed border wall.

You can watch the video for “Land of the Free” below.

Meanwhile, Spike discussed the timeliness of “BlacKkKlansman” and the government shutdown with THR during a lunch reception for the Producers Guild Awards. The film is up for the top prize at Saturday’s ceremony, but the filmmaker says “The goal is not to be nominated. The goal is to make films of impact, and this film definitely has,” Lee told The Hollywood Reporter.

“I’m not trying to be some grandiose motherf*cker like, ‘Oh, I don’t need awards.’ I’m not saying that. But what I’m saying is that, there are things more important.”

BlacKkKlansman” centers on the real-life black detective Ron Stallworth, who infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan in the 1970s. Spike believes the timeliness of the film is what made it a hit with critics and audiences.

“I think it really deals with the world we live in today. I keep saying this, but it’s true — ‘The stars were in alignment.’ Everything is timing, really,” he said. “You could do anything — a great song, movie, play, novel — and one little thing in there, it’s not gonna hit. It’s not gonna have impact. It’s timing.”

To illustrate his point, Lee cited The Killers’ new single, “Land of the Free” and pointed out that the song was released during the longest U.S. government shutdown in history.

“Again, it’s about what’s happening. Over 800,000 Americans are on their fourth week of not receiving a check,” Lee said. “People are hurting.”

Kandi Burruss Reveals In A Video The Reason Why She Decided To Join Celebrity Big Brother- It Involves Her Daughter, Riley

It was recently reported that Kandi Burruss and Tamar Braxton decided to join Celebrity Big Brother. This came after Kandi revealed to her fans that she would be taking a break from social media. Now, Kandi explains her decision to join to famous show in the video below.

‘So people are asking why I am doing Celebrity Big Brother, and the answer is … @rileyburruss told me I should do it and she also said if I get kicked out early …don’t come home😂😂😂😂.#celebritybigbrother’ Kandi captioned her video.

Someone had a suggestion for Kandi and her hubby: ‘@kandi you and Todd would have been great on Celebrity Survivor or Celebrity Amazing Race – wouldn’t y’all agree?’

Another follower said ‘I’ll be rooting for you…. I think you can do it @kandi You have the perfect personality for this show.’

Someone else had a new point of view: ‘Because RHOA is coming to an end but you’re smart and already setting up future bags! Love you girl! ❤ #taurusthing.’

One commenter said ‘I’m a fan of the show, but don’t think I could ever compete on the show. It’s interesting to watch the ways people will lie and deceive in the name of money and prizes. I’ll be rooting far you (and your sanity), and I hope you do well! 💪🏾

A supporter posted: ‘Big Brother, Kandi hope U win only for Riley’s encouraging U for charity. U probably wouldn’t have thought of it yourself….’

We really cannot wait to see Kandi on the show. She had recently made her fans happy when she posted a new video of her and Todd Tucker’s son, Ace Wells Tucker.

Tesla releases a video showing us how a Model 3 gets made

Model 3

The Model 3 has long been the linchpin in Tesla’s plan to bring electric cars to the masses. Hardly a point of speculation, Elon Musk said this himself in Tesla’s now somewhat famous “Master Plan” all the way back in 2006. If you recall, Musk at the time explained that Tesla’s overarching strategy was to take profits from pricier models (i.e the Roadster and the Model S) in order to bankroll an “even more affordable car.”

That affordable car, as we’d find out about 10 years later, was the Model 3. And while the $ 35,000 option for the Model 3 isn’t available just yet, demand for Tesla’s mass market EV remains incredibly strong. In fact, the Model 3 is largely responsible for Tesla actually managing to turn a quarterly profit earlier this year.

Movies That Should Have Been Based on Video Games

The extent to which bad movies based on video games outweighs the good is almost laughable. Over the years, many studios have tried to translate the thrills and bombast of our favourite interactive medium to film, but it continually proves all-too-easy to slip up spectacularly. We say this fully aware that director Paul W.S. Anderson’s Resident Evil series has grossed box office takings of $ 1.2 billion worldwide. But as any fan of Capcom’s celebrated horror franchise will tell you, even Anderson’s franchise quickly abandoned the original concept, mutating into its own beast until it was near-unrecognisable.

The movies that do the most justice to video games tend to be those that skirt around gaming – such as Wreck-It Ralph, Ready Player One, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle – rather than the ones that directly lift an existing plot or concept, condensing down hours and hours of gameplay into roughly 90 minutes. It’s an impossible task most of the time, it seems, when a studio sets out to transfer a game to the big screen. However, there are a bunch of Hollywood flicks that accidentally encapsulated our favourite game franchises – and in the process, made decent versions that could only have been improved had someone stepped in at the end of shooting and shouted: “Surprise! You’ve just made a Call of Duty film! Now add in these bits…”

Perhaps more movies need to be retroactively or stealthily made into game adaptations. Here’s our pick of movies that could, and perhaps should, have been based on video game properties.

Overlord/Wolfenstein

Originally rumoured to be another undercover addition to the cult Cloverfield anthology series, the J.J. Abrams’ produced Overlord turned out to be a gore-fuelled genre mash-up of war film and horror flick – one with an affinity for relentlessly dispatching zombified Nazi soldiers. It’s a pretty tongue-in-cheek take on what lengths the German army might have gone to in order to secure their thousand-year army. These traits are emblematic of the Wolfenstein video games: a series that also isn’t afraid to take some creative liberty when it comes to depicting what the Nazis were capable of.

Set in an alternate history where Hitler’s Third Reich has steamrolled its way onto American soil, recent Wolfenstein entries have placed you in the shoes of gung-ho resistance fighter B.J. Blazkowicz. And while there are no zombies for you to fight per se, the in-game Nazi forces have been conducting some equally grotesque human experiments. Just add in some mechs with the patriotic spirit dialled up to 11, and Overlord is a Wolfenstein movie in the making.

Exodus: Gods and Kings/Assassin’s Creed

We can image Christian Bale donning AC’s iconic hood.

While portraying a sneaky assassin and climbing tall buildings bring much of the joy gamers get from playing Assassin’s Creed games, it’s the historic locations and stories that are of chief appeal. The official Michael Fassbender-led Assassin’s Creed movie botched this a few years back by emphasising the series’ futuristic aspect, when what we should have got was a fully-fledged swords-and-sandals epic likes Ridley Scott’s Exodus: Gods and Kings.

The 2014 movie that cast Christian Bale as Moses and Joel Edgerton as Rameses II wasn’t great, as it happens. But it could have been had it been deliberately infused with a touch more Assassin’s Creed DNA. Only last year, the Ubisoft series ventured into the Ptolemaic period of Egypt, casting players as Bayek the Last Medjay, tasked with protecting the innocent. Exodus: Gods and Kings was, in the end, a plodding retelling of a story told countless times before and would have benefitted by borrowing from the Assassin’s Creed brand of fictionalised history.

Gangster Squad/LA Noire

Slick but soulless, Gangster Squad should have been based on LA Noire.

Set in post-WWII Los Angeles and intended as an homage to noir films of the era, Ruben Fleischer’s Gangster Squad had a cracking cast in Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, and more. However, it’s instantly forgettable thanks to an uninspired story. It follows a rogue team of LAPD officers challenged to go beyond police boundaries to take down a local crime baron. The movie, however, shares plenty of similarities with the critically acclaimed detective game, LA Noire, released just two years prior.

LA Noire forgoes the usual action spectacle for a slower-paced crime story that is gradually pieced together as you work your way up the police departments. The cases you, as protagonist Cole Phelps, are solving are based on real Los Angeles crimes committed in 1947, and there’s a strong emphasis on the morality of the decisions you make in order to get your confession. Gangster Squad could have been vastly improved with this nuance, which would have done justice to the style of film it honours. Instead, the film just consistently descends into a 21st century-brand of action.

REC/Resident Evil

REC matched the first Resident Evil’s vibe of close-quarters horror.

While a diluted version of Resident Evil may have already found success among cinema audiences, the Milla Jovovich-led franchise leaned more on action than the intimate horror of Capcom’s best entries of the classic game series. The formula for a perfect Resident Evil movie should go something like this: zombies + limited resources + a confined space. In other words, the elements masterfully executed within 2007 Spanish found-footage horror REC, and by extension its US remake, Quarantine.

Both versions of the film centre on an innocent reporter accompanying a team of firefighters on their first job of the night, only to find that the apartment building they’re called to is Ground Zero to a viral outbreak. This is akin to the close-quarters horror Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine find themselves experiencing in the first Resident Evil’s Spencer Mansion, or, more recently, Resident Evil 7’s Baker House. The movies’ found-footage aspect aligns them specifically to the latter game, restoring the stripped-back scares that Anderson’s films always lacked. REC is already intense, but just imagine if it was approached as a Resident Evil film.

Edge of Tomorrow/Call of Duty

Edge of Tomorrow is already quite video game-y. In it, we follow an underprepared Tom Cruise, who is forced into battle during an alien war against Earth, only to find that he is able to die again and again before being sent back to the beginning of the skirmish. That’s right, it’s Groundhog Day meets Starship Troopers. And while Edge of Tomorrow could make a case for being based on any first-person shooter franchise, it aligns well with the fast-paced action of Call of Duty’s multiplayer offering.

The movie is actually based on a manga comic called All You Need Is Kill, but the time-loop aspect reinforces the tediousness of war until ultimately it’s trivialised – similar to how Call of Duty players have become acclimatised to “live, die, repeat”, up to the point where they win for their team online. There is an official Activision-licenced Call of Duty movie currently in development, but Edge of Tomorrow’s futuristic element means it doesn’t sit too far away from sub-series entries Black Ops and Infinite Warfare. Another movie that could have been improved by an overt association with a gaming franchise? What could have been.

[VIDEO] The Top 3 Millennials’ Money Mistakes

From early 401(k) plan withdrawals to not actively investing in stocks because that is for “old white people, studies show Millennials rank near or at the bottom when it comes to financial savvy. Here are the top three Millennials’ money mistakes:

Millennials Money Mistake 1: Being All For The ‘Gram

Keeping up with the Joneses (or even the Kardashians) for the sake of Instagram can keep you in a world wind of purchases and outings you cannot afford. The continued pictures of you dining out, vacationing on a credit card, and costly “lituations”is an expensive lifestyle when you add it all up.

Yes, you can have fun, especially when you’re young. However, you’re not only losing valuable time, but if you find yourself spending more than you can afford, you will end up robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Just do the math—by time you have added up the cost of that lifestyle for even one year, you could have created your own “bank” by purchasing a new financial solution that offers a cash value via Index Funds. That way, you could vacation or even purchase a new car without putting your checking account and credit cards in the negative.

In this video, financial expert and advisor Robinne Alexander breaks down the other top two financial mistakes Millennials make.

White Man Refuses To Let Black Men Enter Apartment Without Proof Of Residency [Video]

In this week’s edition of white people never learn , a man that Twitter has named Hallway Hasselhof refused to let his Black neighbor into his apartment building.

“What are you doing in my building?” the white man asks. “You don’t live here.”

Chika Okafor posted video of the confrontation to social media noting that he was interrogated for the crime of existing in a white space as a free Black man. Writing that the man in the video “interrogated” him while he was waiting for a Lyft on the first floor of his apartment building with a friend, who caught the whole exchange on video.

“I’ve lived here 27 years and I’ve never seen you,” said Hallway Hasselhof. Apparently, Okafor should have sent out an e blast informing everyone in the building that a Black man had moved in, to prevent a scene like this one from unfolding.

The white man was visibly upset that Okafor was not losing his composure because he folded his arms and stated “I can be as cool as you.”

“You left your MAGA hat upstairs, man,” the friend filming the heated conversation tells the man in the video.

Obviously this isn’t sitting well with Twitter who had a lot to say about Hallway Hasselhoff.

“What was with him criticizing you for being calm, collected and cool. These people can’t stand that a black man can be more dignified and cooler than they will ever be,” one Twitter user commented, Yahoo reports.

“If he was truly backing down to be neighborly, he would have done neighborly things like introduce himself or extend a handshake,” another person wrote. “His intentions were very clear.”

No word on what happened to Hallway Hasselhoff yet but we’re sure the Twitter detectives will identify him soon!

We Heart: The New Video for Jennifer Hudson’s Feminist Anthem “I’ll Fight”

The hard-won victories of the feminist movement came after years of struggle by activists and trailblazing leaders from the streets to the halls of power. Oscar, Grammy and Golden Globe Award winner Jennifer Hudson celebrates their work in the new music video for her single “I’ll Fight.”

The video for the feminist anthem, written for the Ruth Bader Ginsburg documentary RBG, combines video footage of women’s rights marches from the last decades with clips of Ginsburg articulating the urgency of equality in court. Its lyrics are a powerful celebration not just of champions like Ginsburg, but of the sisterhood that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with them when they raise their fists.

“When you feel you’re taking all that you can take, and you’re sure you’re never gonna catch a break, when it’s dangerous,” Hudson sings, “I will be the one to help you carry it.” Diane Warren, who wrote the song’s lyrics, told CNN that it was “an honor to write a song about such a badass, inspiring, and iconic woman”—and “a dream-come-true” to have Hudson bring it to life.

The video comes months after the song’s initial release as a tribute to everyone who voted in the midterm elections to speak truth to power and send historic numbers of women to Congress and statehouses next year. “Even though the election has ended,” Warren declared to Rolling Stone, “the fight isn’t over.”

Tank doesn’t know if his plan will work, but that leads him into a super interesting view of human nature.  He’s not buying the whole, give-him-a-second-chance thing, because Tank thinks humans are so flawed — so imperfect — that sometimes people should get 4th and 5th chances.

Single Mother Gets The Surprise Of A Lifetime From Her Bank [VIDEO]

Various US curency

Source: Douglas Sacha / Getty

via Bossip:

A 30-year-old nurse and single mother with $ 150,000 in student loan debt received an absolutely life-changing surprise on Wednesday.

Jasmin Ford was surprised with the news that Fifth Third Bank was going to be paying off her student loans entirely. “I still can’t find the words,” the mother said on Thursday. “I’m off work again today and I’m just sort of pacing around and restless because I know my life is going to change.”

Ford is a Chicago native and was the first in her family to graduate from college. She received her bachelor’s degree in 2011 and then became a nurse three years later after going back to school for her nursing degree. She finished her Master’s degree in nursing in 2015. With no family assistance, she said she had to take out student loans in order to cover necessities like food and rent in addition to tuition.

“I could not foresee when I’d be able to pay it off,” Ford said of her debt. “I just knew this was going to be a part of my life as long as I was alive unless there was some significant change, which — wow.” Ford said she now envisions being able to use her nursing career to give back even more and “pay it forward.”

“I just imagine being able to spend more time physically with my family, not having to hustle, having mental freedom and with that, some spiritual freedom,” she said. “I can open myself to more experiences, opportunities and just be able to sit and be with my thoughts and be able to pursue what it is I came to do.”

She also said that life will change for her son, Caleb, who is going to turn 2 in February. While struggling to pay back her debt, Ford worked nearly every day of the week at two jobs. “His life will be totally different,” she said. “I’m so happy and so proud that I’m able to offer that to him more than anything else because he deserves it.”

Jasmine Ford was surprised by Fifth Third Bank after being chosen to participate in a documentary that the Ohio-based bank was producing on the student loan debt. She didn’t know she was being awarded $ 150K for her loans, because she thought the film crew was simply coming back to her home on Wednesday to shoot some additional video.

Next year, Fifth Third Bank plans to pay off student debt for two more people. The bank will pay off loans of up to $ 39,000 for two users of Fifth Third Momentum, the bank’s student loan initiative that rounds up a customer’s debit card purchases and applies it to their student loan balance.

Disrespectful: Photographer Fakes Having Sex Atop Great Pyramid, People Are Outraged [Video]

There’s a photo going around of two people having sex on top of the Great Pyramid.

Despite the act itself being fake, Egyptian authorities are investigating and people all over the world are outraged by the disrespect.

To be clear — they did scale the pyramid, but they say the sex was simulated.

via Complex:

It was taken by Danish photographer Andreas Hvid, who did scale the Great Pyramid of Giza outside of Cairo, Egypt in November with a model. He took a video of their stunt, blurring out the model’s face. The video ends with the anonymous woman taking off her top. Other photos show the two posing as if they were having sex.

The images and video immediately sparked outrage. People pointed out that not only is the stunt immensely disrespectful—it’s illegal. As Newsweek reports, Egypt’s antiquities minister Khaled al-Anani said scaling the pyramids is “strictly forbidden,” and the images from Hvid were a “violation of public morality.”

The footage is still being investigated for its authenticity, but Hvid admitted the photo of him having sex on the pyramid isn’t real. They were, per the Guardian, just posing.

Why someone would illegally scale a 460-foot, 4,500-year-old national treasure to pretend to have sex is the most puzzling part of the whole ordeal, and Hvid provided little insight on that aside from describing the “euphoric” feeling he had on top of the pyramid. “We did not have sex and we never had it,” he said.

In response to the video and photos on both Instagram and Facebook, locals are asking the government to ban tourists, and people from across the globe expressed rage toward Hvid’s stunt.

The Danish photographer told tabloid Ekstrabladet he’d been dreaming of climbing the giant structure “for many years,” but was saddened by the negative reaction. “I’m sad that so many people have become so angry,” he said, cluelessly. “But I have also received a positive response from a lot of Egyptians—something I think is worth remembering.”

So far, Hvid and the model have not face any consequences for the stunt, as authorities continue to investigate.

They deserve to face ALL the consequences.

Video Games Won’t Be Part of the Paris Olympics

The Olympic Games regularly add new events, but officials aren’t quite ready to embrace eSports.

This weekend, the International Olympic Committee met for the 7th Olympic Summit, where competitive video gaming was among the topics of discussion. The verdict? It’s still “premature” to discuss including them in the Olympic games.

That’s bound to be disappointing to supporters, who had hoped for a breakthrough in the 2024 Paris games. Tony Estanguet, co-president of the Paris Olympic committee, is a proponent of bringing video games to the Olympics.

Despite initial opposition to eSports, Olympic organizers didn’t entirely shut the door on the idea.

The IOC “agreed that the Olympic Movement should continue to engage with [the eSports] community.” It also said some titles were “not compatible” with the Olympic values, presumably referring to action and shooter games. Explaining, the IOC drew a contrast between how the eSports “industry is commercially driven” as opposed to the “values-based” aim of other sports, a claim that many might find fault with.

Still, the IOC did say it planned to invite stakeholders in the eSports industry to a liaison group, where they would “explore jointly collaborative projects”.

eSports might seem a strange fit in the Olympics, but many of the Olympics most popular events were similarly greeted with skepticism. Snowboarding wasn’t added until 1998. And as the X Games grew in popularity, the Olympics added Big Air aerials and slopestyle skiing.

Five new sports will debut in 2020, some of which, like skateboarding, are designed to appeal to younger demographics. That audience will likely be what ultimately convinces the IOC to add eSports to the games at some point. Viewership for events, both online and on TV, has regularly outpaced that of major traditional sports tournaments.

The IOC also has some time to change its mind. No final decisions about the competition in the Paris Olympics will be made until 2020, after Tokyo’s time with the Games is done.

Say What Now? Nuns Accused Of Embezzling Half A Million Dollars From Catholic School To Gamble In Vegas [Video]

Two nuns at St. James Catholic School in Torrance, California, allegedly embezzled as much as $ 500,000 in tuition, fees and donations.

Authorities say they spent some of the money on trips and gambling at casinos while telling parents the school was operating on a shoestring budget.

via CBS:

Bank records show Sister Mary Margaret Kreuper and Sister Lana Lang were embezzling from the school for at least 10 years, the Press-Telegram reports.

Kreuper, who retired as the school’s principal earlier in 2018, handled all tuition checks and fees. She allegedly withheld some checks and deposited them into a secret account only she and Chang were aware of.

While investigators found the two gave some of the stolen money back to the school, the rest was used for their “personal gain.”

They kept up the charade, telling parents that the school was operating on a tight budget, all the while using the embezzled funds for lavish vacations and trips to the casino.

The report claims the archdiocese and the church are not pursuing criminal charges after the nuns said they’re sorry.

This is the ‘Sister Act 3′ storyline we deserve.

Here’s Your Guide to the Movie References in Ariana Grande’s ‘Thank U, Next’ Music Video

Leave it to Ariana Grande to capture the essence of the teen rom-com with her music video for “Thank U, Next.”

In the highly anticipated video released on Friday, Grande pays homage to films like Mean Girls, Legally Blonde, Bring It On and 13 Going on 30 by channeling their sweet storylines. Viewers will even spot some cameos from some of the films’ stars.

The song, which has maintained the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks as of Friday, is a widely discussed self-love anthem that arrived in the wake of much public conversation about Grande’s past romantic relationships. “Thank U, Next” was released just weeks after she and Saturday Night Live cast member Pete Davidson called off their engagement, and two months after Grande’s ex-boyfriend, the rapper and producer Mac Miller, died from an accidental overdose.

In the video, Grande cheekily pokes fun at the public’s curiosity about her personal life, recreating the gossip sequence about queen bee Regina George (Rachel McAdams) in Mean Girls. She also channels Elle Woods (played by Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde), Torrance Shipman (played by Kirsten Dunst in Bring It On) and other pop-culture heroines, employing the references in service to her message about the challenges of moving on after a breakup.

Here, we’ve compiled a handy guide to every movie reference that Ariana Grande squeezed in “Thank U, Next.” You can thank us later.

Mean Girls

Like any true queen bee, Mean Girls takes precedent as the alpha rom-com in “Thank U, Next.” Grande dresses up in full Regina George looks, down to the Louis Vuitton purses, silver initial necklace and long blonde hair. The video’s typography and the song’s original artwork mimic that of the film and, of course, its infamous “Burn Book.”

Additionally, some of the most high-profile cameos in the music video appear during the Mean Girls segments, with Jonathan Bennett returning as high school heartthrob Aaron Samuels and Stefanie Drummond as a major Regina enthusiast. Grande collaborator Troye Sivan appears in the video in a letterman jacket, while YouTube stars Colleen Ballinger and Gabi DeMartino and Grande’s former Victorious co-star, Elizabeth Gillies, round out the crew as Cady Heron and the rest of the Plastics. Kris Jenner makes a delightful appearance as Regina’s “cool mom.”

Legally Blonde

Grande went full valley girl for the Legally Blonde-inspired segments of the music video, where she sported a pink maribou feather Adam Selman tube top that would have warmed the cockles of Elle Woods’ heart. From studying on an orange MacBook Pro while working out on the ellipticals like any hard-working Harvard student to hanging out with the legendary Jennifer Coolidge, who reprises her role as Paulette, Grande portrays a woman ready to keep up with whatever life throws her way.
