What Is VAR? Soccer’s Video Review Is Making a Mess of the Women’s World Cup

When an acronym for instant replay is overshadowing the World Cup, the beautiful game can get ugly, fast.

Unfortunately, that’s exactly what’s happening in France, where every Women’s World Cup match, it seems, is marred by some controversy surrounding VAR, or “video assistant referee.” This technology is supposed to efficiently solve rules disputes, not enrage fans and leave the world’s best soccer players, who’ve worked their whole life to take part in a global mega-event like the World Cup, completely flustered.

Let’s take a closer look at the row over VAR.

What is VAR?

VAR is essentially soccer’s instant replay system. On March 3, 2018, the International Football Association Board (IFAB), the top rulemaking body for global soccer, wrote VAR into the laws of the game. IFAB touted this measure as a “historic step for greater fairness in football.”

The guiding philosophy of video review was “minimum interference-maximum benefit,” with aims to eliminate “clear and obvious errors” or “serious missed incidents” with regards to goal calls, penalty decisions, decisions to hit players with red cards after a first infraction, and cases of mistaken identity, i.e. giving a penalty to the wrong player. Sounds reasonable, right? With stakes as high as they are in world soccer, you want to get the call correct.

That same month, FIFA voted to include VAR at last summer’s men’s World Cup in Russia. Top leagues around the world were already experimenting with the system, so many of the men’s players were familiar with VAR going into their tournament. VAR was generally considered a success for the men: according to FIFA, VAR resulted in a 99.3% success rate of correct calls (without VAR, 95% of calls would have been right).

So FIFA approved VAR for the women right away, right?

No, and that’s part of the problem. Rather than just implement a successful innovation for the Women’s World Cup right away, FIFA dragged its feet on approving VAR for the women’s event this summer.

“I think it would be a little bit insulting if we weren’t afforded the same opportunity,” U.S. women’s soccer coach Jill Ellis said of VAR after last summer’s men’s World Cup. “There’s too much at stake to not have it, and I think our game, our passion, our drive, our motivation is at the same level as the men.”

In December, FIFA announced its list of referees and assistant referees for the Women’s World Cup, but made no mention of video refs. FIFA finally approved VAR for the Women’s World Cup on March 15, less than three months before the start of the tournament. So the women didn’t benefit from playing under VAR before its introduction at the world’s most important soccer tournament.

Also, on June 1 — just six days before the start of the Women’s World Cup — IFAB instituted a new rule mandating that goalkeepers must have at least part of one foot on the goal line, instead of both feet, when an opponent takes a penalty shot. Keepers can no longer stand behind the line. In theory, the new rule offers more flexibility for keepers. But introducing it so close to the World Cup, and using VAR to enforce it so strictly, has turned the women’s players into “guinea pigs,” as Chelsea women’s team manager Emma Hayes put it.

What have been some of the biggest VAR controversies at the Women’s World Cup?

Take your pick, really. But Scotland may have the strongest VAR beef. The Scots needed to beat Argentina on June 19 to have any hope of advancing to the Round of 16. Scotland appeared to secure a 3-2 victory when goalkeeper Lee Alexander saved a penalty shot from Florencia Bonsegundo of Argentina in stoppage time. But VAR determined that Alexander moved a few inches off her line before the shot was taken. Bonsegundo scored on the retake, tying the game and sending Scotland home.

Critics — and not just Scotland fans — argued that, in this case, VAR wasn’t correcting a “clear and obvious error” or “serious missed incident.” Keepers have been edging off their lines on penalty shots for years; VAR was starting to nitpick, and at the Women’s World Cup no less. Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, though a biased observer, captured the sentiments of many when she wrote on Twitter: “I still don’t fully understand how it works, but I understand enough to know that I hate VAR!” The English Premier League will introduce VAR for the first time this upcoming season. But video replay will not be used to scrutinize goalkeeper footwork and take away penalty kick saves.

VAR isn’t just causing headaches on penalty kicks. In Sunday’s France-Brazil quarterfinal, France seemed to go up 1-0 before VAR intervened. Fox rules analyst Christina Unkel made the reasonable point that Brazil goalkeeper Barbara did not have possession of the ball when France’s Valérie Gauvin collided with her on a cross, sending the ball into the net. The refs ruled it a goal on the field. After a more than four minute delay, the call was reversed, seemingly without clear evidence. France survived, pulling out a 2-1 victory with a goal in extra time that, following the United States’ victory over Spain on Monday, set up a much-anticipated quarterfinal showdown between the host nation and the U.S. Friday.

The Americans have benefitted from questionable VAR calls. Against Sweden, Carli Lloyd appeared to be offside on a cross before Tobin Health deflected a ball off Sweden’s Jonna Andersoon, resulting in an own-goal that put the Americans up 2-0 in the second half. After the refs took a look, the goal was allowed to stand. In the U.S.-Spain round of 16 game Monday afternoon, Spain’s Maria Leon was whistled for tripping Rose Lavelle in the box, giving the U.S. a penalty kick late in a 1-1 game. The play didn’t look much like an infraction, but VAR gave the U.S. another break. The call held upon review, and Megan Rapinoe converted her second penalty shot of the game to give the Americans a 2-1 lead it would not relinquish.

Even former U.S. star Julie Foudy questioned the call:

What happens with VAR now?

Besides praying that some VAR controversy doesn’t determine who wins the Women’s World Cup final? VAR calls should be determined in a more timely, and consistent, fashion for the rest of the tournament. But protests will likely continue. After two VAR calls went against Cameroon in its 3-0 Round of 16 loss to England, the players were notably upset. Cameroon coach Alain Djeumfa called the decisions a “miscarriage of justice.”

When it comes to the treatment of the world’s best soccer players, a disturbing pattern has formed. VAR for men was deemed a success, but the players had some time to get acclimated to it. The women did not, and had to deal with a rule change for goalkeepers that complicated the whole thing just days before the start of the tournament. Even putting pay disparity aside, this isn’t the only case of women’s players getting the short shrift. The last Women’s World Cup, in Canada in 2015, was held on artificial turf, something that would never happen with the men. This year, the finals of two major regional men’s tournaments, the Gold Cup and 2019 Copa América, take place on July 7 — the same day as the Women’s World Cup final. Such a scheduling conflict would be unimaginable for the men’s World Cup.

Bottom line: VAR’s disastrous rollout this World Cup only adds to the indignities that women have faced in global soccer, even in recent years.

Watch: Tyler Perry Accepts Ultimate Icon Award at the 2019 BET Awards [Video]

Tyler Perry has teamed up with BET to launch the network’s ‘BET+’ subscription streaming service dropping later this fall.

Not only will the platform feature a bunch of Tyler’s new projects, but it’ll also house Tyler’s entire catalog of projects in addition to other BET original series, shows, and movies.

Not-so-coincidentally, BET awarded Tyler with this year’s Ultimate Icon Award at the 2019 BET Awards.

via Complex:

While accepting the Ultimate Icon honor at the BET Awards on Sunday, Perry delivered an empowering, heartfelt speech about the life experiences that have allowed him to have such a successful career.

The writer, director, and actor, recalled growing up listening to the jokes his mother and her friends would tell one another, and later, when his abusive father would beat his mother, he would recite the jokes back to her in an effort to make her laugh. He also recalled walking to school as a young boy and being the only one willing to help an old man cross the street. “That moment reminded me of my mother, bringing out of her pain with laughter, helping her cross,” he said. He has spent much of his career trying to help black men and women “cross,” all the while keeping the thought of his mother at the forefront of his efforts.

“When I built my studio, I built it in a neighborhood that is one of the poorest black neighborhoods in Atlanta so that young black kids could see that a black man did that, and they can do it too. I was trying to help somebody cross,” Perry told the audience. “The studio was once a Confederate Army base, which meant that there was Confederate soldiers on that base, plotting and planning on how to keep 3.9 million Negroes enslaved. Now that land is owned by one Negro.”

Nicki Minaj Gets Freaky With Boyfriend In ‘Megatron’ Music Video [Watch]

After a lengthy hiatus on social media, Nicki Minaj has returned with new music and a video to accompany it.

The “Queen” rapper dropped the visuals for the dancehall-inspired track “Megatron” on Friday (June 21), and it feature Nicki partying at a club, dancing in front of a green Lambo—which she later sets on fire—and getting a bit frisky in the sauna with her current boyfriend, Kenneth Petty.

Prior to the video’s release, the hip-hop star teased her new song in a sexy clip showing her laying in bed with Petty, who can’t keep his hands of her. He is seen rubbing her stomach before working his way up to her chest — see the Twitter embed clip below.

“What’s up with the tummy rubbing? You pregnant huh,” one fan commented on the post.

Not only does Nicki call Kenneth her “husband” in the 47-second clip, she also whips out a gun — because they were about to go to the “shooting range.”

“When morning wood leads to #Megatron promo. 😩😂 who’s ready for MIDNIGHT?!!!! 😜” Nicki said in the caption of the video, teasing her forthcoming track.

As noted by Us Weekly, Petty was convicted of attempted rape in 1995 and pleaded guilty to manslaughter 11 years later.

Fans immediately noted that the title of Nicki’s new song is a nod to Future’s 2018 track “Transformer,” in which she raps:

I’m still the bad guy, I am a Decepticon

Some call me Nicki but some call me Megatron

I’m stoppin’ bags and I don’t need a red octagon.

Could “Megatron” be a sneak peek of Nicki’s fifth studio album? Fans seem to think so.

Last week, it was revealed Nicki wouldn’t appear on Chris Brown’s INDIGOAT Tour after all. She also dropped her bass-heavy track collab with Trina entitled “Baps” (Badass Pretty Sags),  which you can listen to below.

Transcript, Video from Wendy Williams Speaking at Black Enterprise’s FWD Conference

On Thursday, media star Wendy Williams sat down for a one-on-one conversation in the session, “Wendy Williams: More Than Just Talk” at Black Enterprise’s FWD conference—the premier black business conference—being held in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Williams was interviewed by BE’s chief brand officer of Women of Power, journalist Caroline Clarke. Below, is the transcript from the session.

[On being asked about the next level of her career]

My husband and I were partners—and he’s not the executive producer, I just have to clean the slate and start over.
I didn’t meet my husband until my 29th birthday and those years before I was already a property owner, I was already a radio star, I was already the boss of my own life. I’m returning to that life with a bigger platform. I won’t talk horribly about my husband. You can’t just make 25 years go away.

[On her tips for success]

Wear a watch, time matters. I will hail a cab before I am late. I will walk before I wait for a late person.

[On being ‘Wendy’]

I’m like a Mustang—that horse you can’t tame.

[On her first media job]

They [‘They’ being the station before Hot 97 became Hot 97 – 103.5] wanted a black person on the staff and with a black woman they got a double, they told me [that] and I didn’t care. I said was one day I am going to be successful. I mean I thought it was messed up for them to say that and it was messed up for me to take the job instead of going to The New York Post and telling the story. But I said one say I will be successful enough that I will be able to come back and share jewels.

[On her habits and career advice]

I am a skinflint, I am very cheap. Very cheap. Save your money, dress appropriately. Ladies, get yourself a wrap dress; a wrap dress will take you to the White House, a funeral, and back.

For the gentleman: watch your tattooing and the piercings, ’cause that’s not hot. I don’t want an assistant with a nose piercing or her eyebrows pierced. Watch your social media. Travel light, travel far—the person who told me that was Bugsy who is a legend [in radio] he was on WBLS—go by yourself you will go further. I have girlfriends and guy friends you don’t hear me talk a lot about them because they weren’t part of what it took for me to be here.

[On doing business with a life partner]

Don’t do it. [My husband]—he was available in terms of when he got into my life he saw that… he said, “I’ll hold you down.” When it came time for contract time it was me, my attorney, [and Kevin]. Now you see what happened to my life.

Marry a cardiologist and you go on to be an engineer—make sure people support you but have your separate lives. When you come home you have more to talk about than business. Keep it separate.

My role model is my mother, my parents have been married for 61 years. And they’re healthy. My personality is the spitting image of my mother. The important lessons I learned from my mother and my father: Always have a personal life and also save your money.

If you read headlines and buy into them, and they are juicy, I’m like, “If I didn’t know her I’d be watching that show’ and by the way we gained 63K followers on social since all the drama has been going on—I was very much a co-partner with my husband if you read and buy into everything you’d think that I was pushed to the side. I let him be the manager and also be the man. I am very much a girl at home, I love a man to be a man. I mean open the door for me, all that, I am old school.

In business don’t mess with me, and now that it’s just me, I love it. And my business is growing. I have a partnership now with Lifetime TV. And I’m still going to be manufacturing clothing, and I go to every button, every zipper. I was with QVC and HSN and I’ve learned a lot and I am present; I’m not going to just slap my name on something, which I could do—that’s what they expect when they first sign you up, they want you for your name and your exposure and then they don’t realize the headache I will be. It will take a five-hour meeting just to decide which zippers I want on this dress.

[On new judge show she is executive producing]

I am not a judge but I am judgmental

[On advice for young men and young women]

You need your 20s to be selfish and grow up and grow your business and then when you are in your 30s; kids are an obligation and that obligation will slow you down.

You will not be able to move to Idaho in a studio apartment because that’s all you can afford when you have kids—that’s one thing as far as the men.

Because sometimes you all will drop your seed, even though you love your kids…and then you all of the sudden want to be a rapper.

And girls you all too… you’re sick in love and you just graduated from Fordham University and you want to go to graduate school in Seattle but you don’t want to leave your boyfriend. You better put that love on hold, you better grow that career, love will always be there, just keep it in your mind.

And I am a wife, I’m a serious girlfriend. I’m not one of these girls who, “I don’t need no man.” Take your 20s and you be by yourself. And you better go to graduate school in Seattle and leave him alone. I didn’t say you can’t be long-distance boyfriend and girlfriend.

When I walk in the room along with my team—people are impressed with that because they don’t expect me to walk into the room and have my questions and stuff ready, But you’ve got to be on the ground floor of your operation, I don’t care how good you get. You better show up, be on time, dress appropriately, and don’t just rely on your team to bring back the information because you are such a big shot and you don’t have to be there. No.

[On her life and career currently]

So now, the difference in my business is that it used to be Kev and the team. And then Kev would bring me in, ‘OK the deal’s done, now it’s time for you to meet the people,” Not now. I want to be in on the first conversation about the deal and I want to be in on every meeting until the deal is done. And that’s the way I roll.

July 8th we’re coming back with a new show. The only reason we are off is because Fox is playing the World Cup. The majority of my shows are on Fox although I am also on ABC, NBC, CBS…but they made me have off because of the World Cup.

Say What Now? Group of Adults Break Into a Massive Brawl at a Youth Baseball Game [Video]

A bunch of adults couldn’t keep their hands to themselves while watching a baseball game between a bunch kids and an all-out brawl broke out.

via TMZ:

It all went down on June 15 at Westgate Elementary School in Lakewood, Colorado … where stupid adults took over the field and started fighting over a call made by the 13-year-old umpire.

Multiple morons began throwing punches — IN FRONT OF THE KIDS — with several people suffering injuries in the melee. Cops say between 15 and 20 adults were involved in the incident.

The Lakewood Police Dept. is especially upset at the dude in the white shirt and teal shorts who blindsided a man with a pretty violent shot to the head.

Cops say several people have already been cited in this fight for disorderly conduct and fighting in public — but they’re clearly not done yet.

Officials also say at least one of the injuries is being classified as “serious.”

So far, it doesn’t appear any children were injured in the fight.

Video Shows Sophisticated Attack on David Ortiz, as Ex-Slugger Remains in Intensive Care

(SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic) — Dominican prosecutors say witnesses and security camera footage show that the attempt to kill former Red Sox star David Ortiz was carried out by two men on a motorcycle and two other groups of people in cars, indicating a new level of sophistication in the attack.

The details were contained in a court document obtained by The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Oliver Moisés Mirabal Acosta, who was captured Tuesday night in the town of Mao in the northern Dominican Republic, was driving a grey Hyundai Accent before mounting the bike driven by 25-year-old Eddy Vladimir Feliz García, the document said.

The document also said the two men were seen on security camera footage talking with other people in the Accent and another Hyundai in a nearby street before the shooting at 9:20 p.m. on Sunday.

“In one of the videos it was possible to observe both the accused and the shooter planning the commission of the incident right on Octavio Mejía Ricard Street, which is parallel to the place where the event took place,” prosecutors said.

The document also reveals ineptitude, saying the driver was captured after he skidded and fell off his bike as the pair tried to flee.

Feliz García’s lawyer says his client is an innocent motorcycle taxi driver who had no idea his passenger was going to commit a crime.

Ortiz is recovering from his wounds in intensive care in Boston.

Watch: Surveillance Video Shows Cuba Gooding Jr. DID Touch Groping Accuser’s Thigh and Breast [Video]

Cuba Gooding Jr. was captured on video with his hands on the thigh and breast of the woman accusing him of groping.

via TMZ:

Around 10:15 PM on Sunday, Gooding and his GF, Claudine De Niro, were sitting on a couch in the Magic Hour Rooftop Lounge in NYC … when the accuser sat down next to them. Almost immediately you see Gooding reach over Claudine and place his hand on the woman’s left thigh.

A few seconds later his hand moves up to her breast, and the accuser puts her hand on his. What happens next is open to interpretation — she either pushes his hand back toward him, or he pulls her hand to his mouth and kisses it.

Another man then walks over and stands in front of the group. He puts his hands on the shoulders of Gooding and the accuser, leans over and appears to be talking to the entire group.

Things get a little weird then … as the man gyrates, drawing attention to his crotch. It appears Gooding and his GF playfully paw at his crotch. The guy also takes a drink away from Gooding. A few more people join the group, and everyone’s casually chatting for a few more minutes. They all walk away — separately but in the same direction — about 3 minutes after the initial touching. There’s no argument.

However, about 30 minutes later … Cuba and Claudine were downstairs lounging on a couch and making out. A man, who we’re told works security for the bar, was standing next to the couch when the accuser approached him and started arguing.

We’ve blurred her face to protect her identity, but she appears to say, “Yes, he did.” She repeated that after the security guard shook his head. It’s unclear if Cuba heard their conversation, but he got up, stumbled and then walked right past the accuser and left.

Claudine and the security guard followed right behind him.

Check out the clips below. We don’t know what went on, but it certainly isn’t looking too good for Cuba. He was arrested Thursday and booked for misdemeanor forcible touching and sexual abuse in the third degree.

Regina Hall & Alexandra Shipp Talk Girl Power And Simple Chicks In ‘Shaft’ [Video]

Shaft” is the next chapter in the film franchise featuring the coolest private eye on any New York City block. JJ, aka John Shaft Jr., may be a cybersecurity expert with a degree from MIT, but to uncover the truth behind his best friend’s untimely death, he needs an education only his dad can provide.

Absent throughout JJ’s youth, the legendary locked-and-loaded John Shaft agrees to help his son navigate Harlem’s heroin-infested underbelly.

The film stars Samuel L. Jackson, Jessie T. Usher, Regina Hall, Alexandra Shipp and Richard Roundtree. It’s directed by Tim Story, with a script written by Kenya Barris.

Back in the 70’s when the film franchise was first introduced, the role of women could best be defined as an accessory than equal. While the 2019 version still gives you John Shaft ladies man, the women featured aren’t just there for their gorgeous looks.

Regina Hall portrays Maya, the mother of John Shaft II’s (Jackson) estranged son JJ (Usher.) Maya chose to end her relationship with the elder Shaft because his career wasn’t productive to a safe and healthy family unit. While Alexandra Shipp takes on the role of Sasha. JJ’s childhood friend who has always been there to support JJ, while keeping him grounded.

EURweb’s Jill Munroe took a trip to Harlem to speak with Hall and Ship about the powerful roles women play in this version of Shaft, plus have a conversation that was sparked by one of my favorite lines in the film,  the traits of “a simple b**ch.”

Jill also took a stroll through Harlem with director Tim Story, where the topics were his vision in taking over the iconic franchise, and why it was important to him that the female characters in the film were just as strong as the three generations of Shaft men.

“When you think of Shaft, it’s always that definition of manhood and what is manhood. But we can’t forget womenhood. I just knew when it came to Regina, when it came to Alexandra Shipp, if they were going to be in a “Shaft” movie, they needed to be just as badass as Shaft.”

Shaft hits theaters on Friday, June 14.

Willow Smith Is ‘Curious’ About Polyamory [Video]

If you’re a fan of Jada Pinkett Smith‘s “Red Table Talk,” you know the show covers just about any subject. Pretty much nothing is off limits. That includes the subject of polyamory which is something “Table Talk” will be dealing with in a future episode, reports theJasminebrand.

Polyamory is something Jada’s daughter, Willow Smith, is very “curiouis” about. If you don’t know what polyamory is, it’s generally a three-way relationship involving a man and two women, three men, three women, etc. It’s just not TWO people in a relationship.

When speaking with Jimmy Kimmel, Jada explained how the topic came to be:

“It’s a throuple that Willow was actually following on Instagram. That’s how it all came to be. She became very curious about this whole polyamory thing.”

Kimmel then asked if Willow is actually into polyamory for herself?

“Possibly. I don’t know. Listen, she’s 18 who the heck knows what’s going to go down.”

Hmm, it’s worth noting that on a previous episode of “Red Table Talk,” Willow admitted that she not into traditional monogamous relationships.

“That feeling of ‘You’re my one and my only, there’s no else,’ for me, that would not work.”

This 4-Year-Old Was Not Feeling A Passengers Bare Feet On Flight [VIDEO]

Traveling by plane

There are certain unspoken rules when traveling–the person with the window seat controls the shade, the middle person gets the both armrest, and don’t put your feet on the person’s armrest in front of you. Well this one passenger violated the foot rule and this 4-year-old was not having it.

After a trip to Walt Disney World, 4-year-old Rodney Small and his father were on a flight heading back to Texas when Rodney noticed something interesting. The passenger behind him had taken off their shoes and rested their feet on his arm rest.

Rodney was not feeling it and had something to say. Check out his hilarious response:

Well Rodney, kudos to you for standing up for yourself on that flight!

Customer Success Video: Woodbridge Home Exteriors

Woodbridge Home Exteriors has been fulfilling homeowners’ exterior home improvement needs in the Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas area for over 25 years. Their specialty in replacement windows, siding, and doors makes them a perfect fit for Modernize lead generation campaigns.

Rebekah Lopez, Marketing Manager, for Woodbridge Home Exteriors took a break from her busy schedule to meet us at the Modernize headquarters in downtown Austin, Texas. Watch the video or read through our interview below to find out how we helped them increase their revenue by more than $ 2.5 million in the past year.

I’m Rebecca Lopez and I’m the Marketing Manager for Woodbridge Home Exteriors. We do replacement windows, siding, and doors. We’re in Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas so we do about 3,000 jobs a year and about $ 40 million volume. With Woodbridge, I run all of our traditional marketing, so I do all of our media, television, radio, newspaper, and direct mail. I also do all of our digital marketing like managing our website, handling our Google Adwords campaigns, and any third party digital lead aggregators that we work with.

How has your relationship with Modernize progressed?

“We started at a pretty small scale with Modernize – we just wanted to test it out since these were
a new type of lead that we hadn’t really worked with before. After a few months of seeing really good results, we were ready to scale. We’ve scaled quite a bit and have increased our volume and have seen some really good success!”

What more can you tell us about that success?

“So, we’ve been working with Modernize for just over a year now – We’ve done over $ 2.5 million in net revenue from Modernize leads. I’ve been really pleased with the consistent KPIs that we see. Our set rates, issue rates, and our close rates have all been really steady and predictable and in a good spot to bring us to a positive ROI.”

What is important to you in your relationship with Modernize?

“As a Marketing Manager, I’m constantly working to optimize all of our lead sources and see where we can get better so it’s important to me that a company I’m working with is doing that on their side and they’re equally invested in ensuring the quality of that lead and the experience of the homeowner. Modernize is extremely committed to making sure that the quality is good on the user (the homeowner side) as well as on our side (the contractor side). I’ve been really impressed with the amount of work and the consistent work that Modernize has done to constantly make it better – even when we’re doing great we’re looking for what we can do better.”

How do you work with Modernize to improve?

“I’m sure there’s a lot that goes on in the backend – I see it from my Account Manager. My Account Manager is always prepared for our meetings, always bringing her own data to the table, always looking at what I’m sending her so I can dig into it on my side and she digs it into it on her side and together we always find a solution if there’s a problem or we find new ideas for things that we hadn’t explored before.”

What are some keys to success?

“Definitely the most important thing is to have a well-equipped and successful call center – the bottom line must have! We contact the customer as soon as possible – as soon as we receive the lead goes into our database – we have technology in place to make sure that they’re getting called right away. We’re also making sure that we reach out to them multiple times through multiple avenues like calling, texting, sending an email, if we don’t get a hold of them then we’re going to call them back in an hour – we’re going to call them multiple times over the next couple of days or weeks if we don’t get a hold of them. Besides setting the appointment and being on top of getting in touch with the homeowner, reviewing the data on a regular basis, working with my Account Manager, looking for trends, looking for what we can drill down into and dig into if a KPI is not where we’re used to seeing it. We can break that data down and find out what’s going on.”

Can you describe your relationship with Modernize in one word?

“If I was going to describe Modernize in one word, I think I would choose partnership
because it really is two-sided. They bring just as much work to the table as I do, and we really work well when we work together.”

Say What Now? Walmart Gives Customer a Graduation Cake Made of Styrofoam [Video]

A high school graduate in Texas went to celebrate her big day, but according to her mother, Marsy Flores, the celebration was ruined by a styrofoam cake given to her by Walmart.

via NYDN:

“This is my baby, and she was graduating, so it was very important to me,” Flores told station KPRC in Houston.

According to Flores, when she went to pick up the two-layer cake she’d ordered for her daughter’s graduation, Walmart didn’t have it. The box store offered Flores a smaller cake, for which she wasn’t charged. At least the cake was blue, which was the graduates’ school colors, Flores figured.

Once she arrived home with the pastry, Flores had a hard time carving out slices for celebrants who were ready for dessert. She quickly realized the cake was a block of Styrofoam covered by icing.

Upset, Flores notified Walmart of the mistake and they offered a $ 60 gift card.

“They can’t replace the moment that we lost,” Flores said. “It’s a special moment, and this is what we got for it, a Styrofoam cake.”

A Walmart rep reportedly called the incident a misunderstanding that had been resolved.

“The customer was given a gift card for her inconvenience,” read the retail giant’s statement.

Kelly Rowland On Being Mocked For Living In Beyonce’s Shadow [Video]

Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland enjoyed a girls’ night out on Saturday at the Janet Jackson’s Metamorphosis Las Vegas residency, and were spotted singing and dancing in the crowd, PEOPLE reports.

In videos shared by fans, Beyoncé and Kelly are seen clapping along to Jackson’s 1986 hit “What Have You Done For Me Lately.” In another clip, Queen Bey sings the lyrics to Jackson’s “Rhythm Nation.”

“She was all smiles and was dancing in her seat and even standing up dancing to Janet,” an onlooker told Entertainment Tonight. “She left just before the show ended, presumably to avoid the crowds.”

Rowland, meanwhile, released an EP, “The Kelly Rowland Edition,” earlier this month, and she reportedly worked on the project with the young writers and producers at the Red Bull Studios in Los Angeles. As noted by MadmeNoire, a behind-the-scenes studio sessions video was released recently showing them collaborating on the EP. When asked about her inspiration for this latest effort, Rowland noted her frustration with always feeling second best to Beyonce.

“The elephant in the room for me has always been second best,” she said. “That’s actually the first time I’ve said that out loud.”

Rapper 2 Chainz mocked Kelly and Bey’s dynamic on DJ Khaled’s “You Don’t Want These Problems,” on which the raps: We the best / Khaled tried to told yah /Truuu/ You just second best /Kelly Rowland [haha I’m just playin’ babe]

In 2013, Rowland addressed her relationship with Beyonce on “Dirty Laundry,” singing:

While my sister was on stage, killing it like a motherf–ker/I was enraged, feeling it like a motherf–ker/Bird in a cage, you would never know what I was dealing with/Went our separate ways, but I was happy she was killing it/Bittersweet, she was up, I was down/No lie, I feel good for her, but what do I do now?/Forget the records, off the record, I was going through some bullsh-t/Post Survivor, she on fire, who wanna hear my bullsh-t?

Kelly has said that despite being seen living in the shadow of her bestie, their bond has only grown stronger.

“I think the people wanted those stories for years, and that’s just so sad on them because it’s not like that,” she said. “It’s so crazy, and I just think it’s so sad that we live in a world where people don’t want to see women get along and encourage and empower each other, and that’s what we do for each other.”

“Two years and just like that / My head still takes me back / Thought it was done but I / Guess it’s never really over,” Perry belts during the song’s pre-chorus. “Oh, we were such a mess / But wasn’t it the best? Thought it was done but I / Guess it’s never really over.”

“Never Really Over,” which is co-produced by Perry’s “365” collaborator Zedd, serves as the lead single from the Grammy nominee’s forthcoming sixth studio album. It will be the follow-up to 2017’s Witness, which included the hits “Chained to the Rhythm,” “Bon Appétit” and “Swish Swish” featuring Nicki Minaj.

“I worked on this song when I was on tour, and I don’t really do that,” Perry told fans at YouTube Space Los Angeles on Wednesday, March 29. “I brought [Zedd] the song and said, ‘Wow, it sounds amazing.’ Specifically the lyrics in the second verse, which I love: ‘I guess I should try to go to therapy / To try to get you out of my brain / I can’t even go on the internet / Without even checking your name.’”

Paralyzed High School Student Walks Across Stage at Graduation: ‘Couldn’t Do Anything But Smile’ [Video]

We always hear about the crazy stories coming out of Florida, but here’s one that’s sure to warm your heart.

A high school student who was left paralyzed from the waist down last year was determined to walk across the stage during graduation — and he did!

via People:

Kolton Smith, 18, told ABC affiliate WFTS that he was injured in a car crash that happened in June. According to the news outlet, he was ejected from his truck because he wasn’t wearing his seat belt.

“The next thing I know, I was on my back looking at the sky,” he told WFTS. “I thank God every day for letting me stay on this earth.”

Smith, who used to play football at Durant High School and aspired to join the military, now plans on enrolling at Southeastern University and will study business.

“If you have an injury, you can overcome anything you want,” said Smith, who said he didn’t realize that he received a standing ovation when he managed to walk at graduation.

“I was just focused on walking. I looked at my feet. I didn’t even know everyone was standing,” Smith told WFTS.

He added: “When I was on stage and I heard everyone scream when I stood up, I was like, ‘Whoa!’ I just smiled. I couldn’t do anything but smile.”

On Thursday, the Hillsborough County Public Schools posted on Facebook that seeing Smith walk was “an inspirational and emotional moment.”

“Kolton was paralyzed from the waist down after a horrible car accident last summer,” they added. “He was determined to rise from his wheelchair and walk across the stage to receive his diploma. We are in awe of your perseverance, Kolton. Congratulations!”

Keanu Reeves What Happens When We Die Theory Goes Viral – Watch His Video With Stephen Colbert Here

In a bizarre turn of events, Keanu Reeves gave a profound answer when Stephen Colbert asked the actor what he thinks happens when we die. It was a heavy topic for the late-night show host, and Reeves answer left Colbert speechless.

Mortality is certainly not a topic most celebrities want to discuss when they are doing the talk show circuit. However, it was brought up thanks to Reeves talking about the plot for the upcoming third installment in the cult Bill and Ted franchise. He was discussing the plot for the flick, which is tentatively titled Bill and Ted Face the Music, when the subject of mortality was inevitable.

The plot as Reeves explains, has Bill and Ted writing a song that must reunite the broken universe or life as everyone knows it will be over. They have only minutes to complete the song, which is all about invoking peace in the world. If the crazy duo fails, then the current space-time continuum will be finished.

Once Reeves finished explaining the premise of the movie, Colbert brought up the question that changed their entire conversation.

“So you’re facing your own mortality and the mortality of all existence,” the Late Night With Stephen Colbert host asked before questioning the actor’s thoughts on what he thinks happens to people when we die.

“I know that the ones who love us will miss us,” the 54-year simply stated.

He didn’t say much, but his message left the host speechless. Colbert was silent before reaching over to shake Reeves’ hand and reminding the audience John Wick 3 movie opens later this week.

Keanu Reeves is a man of few words. However, his words regarding what happens to people when they die has made him go viral. They are not only 100% accurate; they are absurdly beautiful. Don’t you agree?

The actor is no stranger to losing someone to death. He was best friends with actor River Phoenix when he passed away from a drug overdose at the age of 23.

Reeves and ex-girlfriend, Jennifer Syme had a stillborn daughter back in 1998. Three years later Syme tragically died in a car crash. However, given the loss he suffered, Reeves has some pretty insightful and not bitter words about death.

Fans can catch Bill and Ted Face the Music in theaters in August 2020.

Four Black Single Mothers Blessed With Pre-Owned Cars At a Maryland Church [VIDEO]

Beyond making history as the first African American Lamborghini and McLaren dealer in the United States, Thomas Moorehead, President and CEO of Sterling Motorcars, is also establishing a legacy of giving back to the communities he serves. Recently, the Sterling Motor Cars Community C.A.R.E program surprised four single-parent moms with cars during church services held on Sunday, April 28, at the First Baptist Church of Glenarden in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.

Sterling Motorcars is a longtime member of the BE 100s, Black Enterprise’s listing of the largest black-owned businesses, and was named Auto Dealer of the Year back in 2007.

According to a statement, each of the unsuspecting mothers was gifted with a vehicle at the 8 a.m., 10 a.m., noon, and 6:30 p.m. services, making them the first recipients of the Sterling Motorcars’ Community C.A.R.E. Program. The community-based initiative, which stands for “commitment, assurance, reliability, and excellence,” targets school, local organizations, and faith-based organizations.

Pastor K. Jenkins Sr. of First Baptist Church of Glenarden said the moms were selected based on their economic hardships and faithfulness to the church. “We have identified four single parents based on their financial needs, having young children, and being active members of the First Baptist Church of Glenarden,” he said in the statement. “Our recipients are faithfully involved in our ministries and are single parents who recognize that their lives are bigger than themselves. They give generously by serving outside of themselves by helping other people.”

Although they were not named in the statement, each of the parents was described as follows:

  • Parent One: Husband passed leaving her to raise eight children, ages 8-15
  • Parent Two: Involved in an automobile accident with uninsured motorists where her car was totaled. This parent volunteers with FBCG’s Special Needs Ministry and has a 15-year-old child.
  • Parent Three: Uses public transportation and has two children ages 7 and 9. Despite various hardships in her life, she continues to serve in the Kids World Ministry and the Children Bible Study Ministry for the last five years.
  • Parent Four: Volunteers their time working with the dance ministry youth ages 13-18.  They have a 9-year-old son, who is also actively involved in the church.

Wendy Williams Sounds Off, Says ‘There’s a Hot Place in Hell’ for Women Who Sleep with Married Men [Video]

Wendy Williams shared her thoughts on Ayesha Curry’s comments about being frustrated with women who try and get too comfortable with her husband, Steph Curry, and kept it real.

While she didn’t directly address her own estranged husband’s cheating scandal, it’s clear that her commentary came from a personal place — and rightfully so.

via Page Six:

“There are a lot of women with no respect for a marriage,” Williams said, before pausing. “You know what I’m saying? A lot of women who know your man is married and will have the nerve to be right up under him, right under your nose.”

After Williams aired a clip of Ayesha talking to Jada Pinkett Smith on “Red Table Talk” about a woman who flirted with Steph and proceeded to tell Ayesha, “Oh, honey, you know what you signed up for,” Williams threw barbs.

“For you lonely girls who can’t keep their hands off other people’s men, there’s a hot place in hell for you,” the daytime host said.

‘Saints Row: The Third’ is still one of the most batsh*t video games in existence

Saints Row: The Third lives again.

The 2011 game comes to Nintendo Switch on May 10, and it’s the same ridiculously over-the-top story of superstardom, gang warfare, and government malfeasance you remember.

If you’re not familiar with the series, or just want to catch up, let’s talk about why it matters.

So Sad: Dad Allegedly Kills 1-Month-Old Son by Punching Him in Head After Losing at Video Game

Anthony Trice, of Kentucky, has been charged with murder for fatally punching his infant son in the head in frustration after losing a video game.

His bond has been raised to $ 1,000,000 full cash.

via People:

His son was initially listed in serious condition but later succumbed to his injuries, according to LMPD.

According to an arrest slip, Anthony Trice was home alone watching the child when he was playing video games. Trice started losing the game and became frustrated, throwing the controller and the punching his son in the head.

After punching the infant, police said Trice picked him up to try to quiet him and while carrying him into the kitchen, dropped the child.

Later, Trice made his son a bottle, set him upright and left him unattended to go to the bathroom. When he came back, he noticed the baby was in distress and called 911.

The boy was taken to Norton Children’s Hospital where he later died.

The child’s grandmother set up a GoFundMe account saying the child’s name is De’Anthony Trice. The GoFundMe says that none of the family saw this coming and the they need help for funeral costs. A picture of the De’Anthony Trice shows him connected to several breathing tubes in the hospital.

Ironically, child safety advocates released a new video on Monday that they hope will save lives in situations just like this one. This video created by Prevent Child Abuse of Kentucky will be distributed to every birthing center in Kentucky, which means it has the potential of being viewed by more than 50,000 parents each year, in more than 100 hospitals. The video educates caregivers about safe sleep practices and pediatric head trauma.

“I think it’s a much bigger problem than you might realize,” Dr. Kelly Duak from Norton Children’s Child Abuse Task Force said in the video. “I saw a statistic that an infant in the state of Kentucky is 70-times more likely to die from an abusive head trauma than they are from a motor vehicle accident.”

The video shares a personal story of a mother who opened up about her son who suffered pediatric abusive head trauma at the hands of a caregiver when he was an infant.

“We want to make sure that we understand that in a blink of an eye, we have the opportunity to impact a child’s life and with prevention and awareness we can stop tragedies from happening,” Jill Seyfred from Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky said.

Our hearts are breaking. Throw that man UNDER the jail!

Wild video shows a Beluga whale retrieving an iPhone someone dropped in the sea

Beluga Whale

The PR team for Beluga whales is really killing it lately. In the span of 10 days we’ve seen two Beluga whale stories hit the news cycle for the most bizarre and incredulous of reasons. Just a few days ago, for instance, Norwegian officials revealed that they came into contact with a Beluga whale that may have been trained — by Russian naval forces — for spying missions.

If you have a tough time believing that story, you may have an even tougher time believing that a Beluga whale in Norway went diving after an iPhone someone accidentally dropped into the sea. What’s more, the whale managed to retrieve the iPhone and bring it back to the surface. Does it sound crazy? Of course. But not to worry, there’s actually video of the event which, naturally, has been blowing up all over Twitter and Reddit.
