Less than one week after Onalaska superintendent Lynn Redden made a Facebook post saying “you can’t count on the black quarterback” in regards to Houston Texans’ star QB Deshaun Watson, Redden has resigned.

The Onalaska Independent School District’s Board of Trustees accepted Redden’s resignation after a special meeting held on Saturday morning, per ABC 13.

Redden’s position came under fire when he made a public comment on the Houston Chronicle‘s Facebook page criticizing Watson’s play following the Texans 20-17 loss to the Tennessee Titans. Redden wrote,, “That may have been the most inept quarterback decision I’ve seen in the NFL,” and “When you need precision decision making you can’t count on a black quarterback.”

The Onalaska ISD wrote on their Faceoobk page, “Onalaska ISD regrets that an inappropriate comment has been attributed to the District’s Superintendent. The OISD does not condone negative comments or actions against any race. Here’s why this photo of Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe’s children is going viral

This is spooky.

Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Philippe may have broken up over a decade ago but we’re still not over it, with Cruel Intentions fans still reminiscing over the old days, when the two Rs were nineties couple goals.

Tying the knot when they were in their early 20s, the couple split after eight years of marriage. And while neither Reese nor Ryan tends to talk openly about their past relationship, they do talk about their children, Deacon and Ava Phillippe.

In fact, it was Ryan’s Instagram activity about his two children that got the world talking this week, with a photo of Ava and Deacon going viral.

A post shared by ryan (@ryanphillippe) on

But why? Simply for the fact that 19-year-old Ava and 14-year-old Deacon are the spitting image of Reese and Ryan – back in the day.

‘Me n mine’, Phillippe captioned the snap of him and his children, with Deacon and Ryan looking scarily similar and Ava looking identical to a young Reese.

‘Beautiful Children! I thought your daughter was Reese at first!,’ commented one user, while another posted, ‘You have beautiful kids @ryanphillippe Pretty sure they are clones of you and Reese =)’.

‘My God’, tweeted one user. ‘Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe’s kids are like mini-carbon copies!’

Those are some good genes!

People who don’t read the news better at predicting which articles will go viral

Using fMRI data, researchers found that the brain activity of people who don’t frequently read the news better predicted the popularity of New York Times Health articles. Frequent readers, by contrast, responded positively to all articles. When seeking to have content go viral, say the authors, look beyond the most committed readers or advocates.

The Viral New ‘Matilda Challenge’ Has People Mastering Objects With Their Mind Powers

Matilda may have hit theaters over 22 years ago, but the 1996 cult classic is still motivating fans to try their hand at summoning their inner telekinetic powers.

A new viral challenge inspired by the scene from the movie when Matilda—played by Mara Wilson—masters her psychic abilities to the tune of Thurston Harris’s “Little Bitty Pretty One” has begun to take the Internet by storm.

To complete the #MatildaChallenge, people are enlisting friends and family members to covertly move objects around as they point at them, creating the illusion that they are moving the items with their minds. The videos result in frequently hilarious recreations of the iconic sequence that even Wilson herself has weighed in on.

Tiny Harris And T.I. Dance In Viral Video — Rapper Kisses His Wife As Xscape Music Plays In The Background

On, off, and on. Tiny Harris was seen dancing and getting sweet kisses from T.I. as she continues to party and celebrate her birthday inside a Miami, Florida nightclub.

Tiny looked gorgeous in a tight purple body suit as her husband twirled her around as a famous song from Xscape played in the background.

The classic, “Who Can I Run To” performed by Tiny, Kandi Burruss, and the Scott divas, set the romantic atmosphere for the little dance.

This video confirms that Tiny has put the Asia’h Epperson cheating drama behind her much like she did after her man was caught with Bernice Burgos.

While some are happy, like Rasheeda Frost, she is making her marriage work; others are fuming that she took the cheater back.

One fan said: “I’m so happy to see T. I is trying to make Tiny smile. I wish he could do right by my girl..they look so cute together. Damm, she has been by his side through everything and still shows the world she is his ride or die wife love and love him dearly. Kudos to these two. Let them live their lives.”

Another commenter stated: “All of you don’t see he’s trying his best to let her go without hurting her….T.I. is letting go! They have that kind of relationship/ love that we will never understand no matter how much we pass judgment on them! Let them live.”

I don’t understand why she is always fighting with the side chicks to get back with him? Hell might as well forgive them tooYou deserve to be CANCELED!!!!!!!!!”

A fourth follower had this interesting remark to add: “They got that disrespectful love, and T.I. is swinging one way, Cause from what I see tiny never go with another man and when T.I. plays her she moves out, and they break up. True swingers don’t act like that.”

Many say they have an open marriage and not to worry about the diva and her man.

Would you trust us if we told you there was an entire floating island dedicated to the mythical beings? You have to see it to believe it…

Setting the scene

Subic Bay is found on the west side of the Philippines. It was once known for the extensive beach, tiger safari tours, and the incredible open-water marine park. With temperatures regularly hitting above 85 Fahrenheit, or 30 Celsius, this picture-perfect location has become a popular destination for many people jetting to the country. However, there is another island that has floated over, and it is making quite the storm…

Unicorn madness

Perhaps you have fallen for the unicorn craze over the last couple of years? The bright colors and cheery outlook on life have made these creatures some of the most popular in the world. We’re all about that unicorn life. So how would you react to look out your window and see an entire island made of unicorns floating in the sea?

Phenomenal size

We’re not just talking about your average small pop-up island here. Oh no, this island is officially the biggest floating playground in Asia! It measures at a staggering 44,000 square feet. That’s the equivalent to eight basketball courts side by side – wowza. Could the life of a unicorn get any better? Hold your horses (or unis); we think it just did.

The course

The floating island doesn’t just look incredible; it is some of the most fun anyone can have on the water. The course is made up of all kinds of obstacles including jungle bars, a Tarzan swing, and a water trampoline. As if that wasn’t enough, you can even send your friend to meet the unicorn on the inflatable human launcher. Now you’ll be able to get closer to those rainbows than you ever thought.

The fun doesn’t stop

Believe us when we say that the floating island is only the beginning of this incredible adventure. As well as a unicorn-packed inflatable course, this island also has a perfectly matched pink and purple beach. Here, you can sit back and take in the sights and sounds while relaxing under the shade of an umbrella on your matching bean bag. The floating island really does come straight out of a fairytale.

Meet the creatures

If the island wasn’t enough to float your boat, then be sure to check out the Unicorn Island. Here you can get up close and personal with their giant mythical horse called Baba in addition to Climby the sea unicorn and a wavy dinosaur. At last, we can meet the magical creatures of the sky that have kept us captivated for so long. Life couldn’t be more magical if it tried.

Perhaps you have never imagined yourself jumping around a giant floating unicorn-themed island in the sea before, but we bet you have now. You’ll have to excuse us while we head off and jump on a plane. See you there – if you can catch us!

These recent photographs of Melania Trump are going viral for a very surprising reason

And you literally can’t ‘unsee’ it…

Melania Trump

Ever since Donald Trump was elected President of the United States, a popular conversation topic has been his wife Melania Trump‘s facial expressions, with the public often commenting on the First Lady’s seemingly glum mood.

Whether standing on the White House balcony with POTUS and a giant easter bunny or frequenting public events hand-in-hand with her husband, the First Lady is rarely seen to be smiling, and when she does, the public have been quick to point out that it looks strained.

In fact, on the very first day of Trump’s inauguration, Melania’s apparent unhappiness was a common theme in the global women’s march, with multiple people taking to the streets with banners reading, ‘Free Melania’.

There were jokes that the First Lady’s straight face could be due to the company of her husband, with some fans pointing out that the 47-year-old looked noticeably happier when she was spotted solo.

Unfortunately for Trump, her most recent public appearance has only added fuel to the fire, with Melania making headlines when she attended Barbara Bush’s funeral at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, Houston, this weekend.

But it wasn’t the fact that she attended solo that got the internet talking, with the president nowhere to be seen. Instead, it was her demeanour, with Melania – who in the absence of her husband was sat next to former President Barack Obama – looking happier than the public could remember seeing her.

Twitter users were of course quick to point out the comparison, with Patton Oswalt tweeting, ‘What the hell is wrong with Melania’s mouth? I’ve never seen it do that before’.

‘After over a year in office, Melania has not smiled once in the presence of Donald Trump’, tweeted another user Ed Krassenstein. ’10 minutes with Obama’s, and look what happened!’

‘Find someone who smiles at you the way Melania Trump smiles at Barack Obama’, another Twitter user, Grace, posted to her account.

While the First Lady has yet to comment on sitting next to Obama, she did Tweet a tribute to Barbara Bush, posting, ‘It was my honor to travel to Houston to give my respects to Barbara Bush and the remarkable life she led as a mother, wife, and fearless First Lady.’

‘My sincerest thoughts and prayers continue to be with George H.W., and the entire Bush family.’

Man’s Story of Growing Up With a Father Like Apu Goes Viral Following The Simpsons Controversy

In the wake of The Simpsons‘ attempt to address the stereotyping controversy surrounding Apu, one man’s story of growing up with a father similar to the character is going viral.

After Sunday’s episode of the animated comedy included a scene in which Marge and Lisa discussed political correctness in 2018 before the camera panned to a photo of Apu with the words, “Don’t have a cow,” written on it, the show was criticized by some who saw the response as dismissive.

The problematic nature of Apu Nahasapeemapetilon — an Indian immigrant who is the proprietor of the fictional town of Springfield’s local Kwik-E-Mart — was cast into the spotlight following the November release of comedian Hari Kondabolu’s documentary, The Problem With Apu.

Now, Twitter user Amar Shah is making waves with his own personal story of being raised by a father who owned a convenience store. “Everybody has an opinion about Apu, but did they ever talk to someone who owned a convenience store or gas station or work in one or grow up in one? You know, like my dad and I?” Shah tweeted on Monday.

Kondabolu later noted that he and his team had, in fact, interviewed Indian small business owners for the documentary, but the footage didn’t make the final cut.

“Brother, thank you for sharing,” he wrote. “We interviewed Desi small business owners & it was left on the cutting room floor due to time. This still haunts me. There’s nothing wrong with working in a gas station or store. These stories should be told with the honesty & care you just showed.”

Tiffany Haddish’s Viral Groupon Story Leads to Super Bowl Ad Gig

Girls Trip breakout star Tiffany Haddish has been a poster child of Black Girl Magic and the ultimate glow up lately. She recently released her New York Times best-selling book, The Last Black Unicorn, and now her hilarious online antics have led to a deal with Groupon. She will serve as the new spokesperson for a series of Groupon campaigns, including the brand’s first Super Bowl commercial in seven years. The 30-second ad from O’Keefe Reinhard & Paul will air during the fourth quarter of the Big Game on Feb. 4, according to Deadline.

The comic has raved about the site to her celebrity co-stars and friends, and during a recent Jimmy Kimmel Live! interview, she talked about taking a Hollywood A-list couple on a Groupon-bought swamp tour experience while filming Girls Trip in Louisiana.

“Nobody knows Groupon like I know Groupon,” Haddish told Deadline. “I’ve been speaking out for them for years. In fact, I should have already been their spokesperson. I’ve invested lots of money into buying Groupon deals, and it’s about time I got an even bigger return on my investment than just saving money at my favorite local businesses.”

“We’re thrilled to have one of the hottest names in entertainment as our new spokesperson,” Groupon Chief Marketing Officer Vinayak Hegde told Deadline. “Tiffany’s award-winning talent and well-known passion for our brand make her the perfect choice to serve as the face of Groupon.”

The company added that the comedian ranks in the top 1% of most frequent Groupon purchasers.

Haddish, whose tell-it-like-it-is candor landed her a spot hosting Saturday Night Live last November, making her the first black female comedian to land the gig. She also won an NAACP Image Award for best supporting actress in a movie for Girls Trip, which brought in more than $ 113 million at the domestic box office—the first black-led, directed and produced film to do so.

Say What Now? Teens Under Investigation After ‘Black People are Trash’ Snapchat Video Goes Viral

A California high school student is under investigation by her school district after a racist video she recorded on Snapchat went viral on social media.

In the video, she recorded herself saying all sorts of racist foolishness.

“Black people are trash; they need to die,” she says in the video. As the girl speaks, she turns the camera to her friend, who pretends to be shocked before giggling in agreement.

The girl continues her racist rant:

“When the police were killing all those black people I was so happy, because I was like ‘Fuck black people, go die bitches.’”

According to CBS 13 Sacramento, her entire community is demanding an apology.

“If it was a joke, it wasn’t a funny joke at all,” said Camryn Tomlin. She couldn’t believe her ears when she saw the video on Twitter a few days ago.

Tomlin just graduated from Pleasant Grove High along with her cousin Breann Bray.

“It’s not right; I think she should be suspended if not even more,” Bray said.

“It’s as hateful as it gets, the type of words and the phrases she uses are despicable,” said Alin Cintean, a Sacramento attorney.

But Cintean says no crime has been committed.

“There’s nothing in there that would constitute a crime, there’s no immediate incitement to violence,” Cintean added.

Cintean says the U.S. Supreme Court gives public high schools more leeway to discipline students if the school believes their words are a threat.

The Elk Grove Unified School District sent CBS 13 a statement Wednesday responding to the racist post, saying the school is working with the students in the video and their families and investigating the incident.

“The school district needs to step up and do its part, they need to educate,” said Sharie Thompson, a member of the Black community.

The post wasn’t a surprise for Thompson, who has recently received threats at her Elk Grove salon.

She says the district needs to adopt new policies around racism, starting with the girl whose video whipped up a Twitter firestorm.

“Shame on you,” Thompson said, referring to the girl and her family.

Since the girl is a minor, news outlets aren’t reporting her name.

Morehouse Student’s Extra Credit Biology Rap Goes Viral

The Morehouse College football player whose extra credit rap video for his biology class went viral says the whole idea started on a whim as he was sitting in bed one night after a game.

Julien Turner, a linebacker for the Maroon Tigers, said he was listening to a Lil Uzi song when he got an idea.

“[I] was listening to ‘XO Tour Llif3’ and I remembered [the professor] had assigned an extra credit assignment where I could make a music video out of anything, and ‘all my cells are dead’ just kept repeating in my head,” Turner, 19, a marketing major, said on “Good Morning America” today. “I scrambled to check my notes to make sure it had something to do with biology and I started writing lyrics that were parallel to the song so I could remember it better. I called up a few teammates and we made the video, and it just blew up from there.”

Turner soon found himself spitting such revised lyrics as: “The DNA starts to unwind. The RNA reads the other side. Meiosis is the key to making life. Mitosis copies cells about to die. If my genes go left unread, all my cells are dead.”

Watch below:

Turner’s professor, Dr. Dwann Davenport, said he succeeded in earning the extra credit with his video.

“I actually heard about it before I even checked my email to see that he’d turned it in,” Davenport said. “I see the text message with the link and I clicked on it and I was like, ‘Oh this is catchy. This is nice.’ I saw all the likes and all the retweets and I was like, ‘Wait, this is my student. Wait a minute, this is Julien. Oh my goodness.’ I was so excited, but I didn’t expect anything like this.”

“He’s an athlete, he’s on the football team. He’s amazing,” she added.

Turner said he and his younger brother also started their own production company, Dreadhead Films, several years ago, and that “it’s crazy” this video went viral because “it’s the worst film” he has ever made. He said his brother is usually the cinematographer and editor, but he didn’t work on this one.

Music runs in Turner’s family. His father, Kevin Turner, is a jazz guitarist and music professor at Ohio State.

How to “Go Viral” Like The #BeardGameMatters Facebook Group

‘Can you make me go viral?’ is the No. 1 question that I am asked by clients and members of audiences when I speak on content creation and social media marketing. Most business owners, celebrities—shoot—even everyday folks, have something to sell or say; want to gain the attention of their intended market and audience; and reach as many people as possible.

However, going viral is a double-edged sword, because as the old adage states, “you have to stay ready so you don’t have to get ready.” This basically means that if you aren’t ready you can lose out on opportunities and money.

‘Going viral’ simply means that you gain the traction for a piece of content—video, article, meme—that reaches large numbers of people. For people in business that can translate into sales. In social media marketing virality is an organic form of word of mouth on steroids.

And that’s exactly what happened recently with a new Facebook group. If you were on social media during the past two weeks, you likely saw references to the Beard Game Matters Facebook group, started by Mike McMillan, founder of Big Beard Brand/Man Cave Essentials. And not only has the group soared on social media but it has also been featured in traditional print and broadcast media, such as The Real daytime TV show.

(Shahid Zhyir, 46,000 Facebook reactions. Image: Shahid Zhyir)

If you did not see reference or have not heard of the group, imagine this: A business owner starts a Facebook group to sell his beard products. He posts pictures of beautiful (predominantly black) men, sporting beautifully groomed beards. He then opens the group to the world. Sounds like a perfectly sensible and well-thought-out marketing plan, right? If you build it, they will come. Well, this group caught the attention of a number of men, looking to share pics about their beards, and THAT caught the attention of women who love—I mean LOVE—bearded men. And come they did! But, was the right thing built?

I was added to the group by a bearded friend on maybe Tuesday or Wednesday of the launch week (it was already boasting about 85,000 members). Three short days later, by Friday, when I actually peeked into the group, it was at about 129,000 members. It was a Friday and the comments by some of the women were so hilarious and the pictures were so beautiful. I figured, ‘what a great distraction from our gloomy current events.’ I was not alone. Distraction or not, there was no arguing that within its first week the Beard Game Matters Facebook group had officially gone “viral.”

But by Saturday, as the group swelled to about 365,000 members—136,000 new members in under 24 hours—I was exasperated. Not because of the crazy comments and sheer dominance of the posts squeezing out almost all other discussions on my Facebook news feed. No, I was confused because I couldn’t see how the founder was monetizing the apparent ‘gold mine’ he’d created. His group was popular, but I wanted to know if it was profitable. And, I was not alone in my exasperation.

Free Marketing is Great, But Not if Dollars are Lost!

“I just want him to put a Facebook pixel on his website!” This was part of a running conversation, partially in private in our Facebook inboxes, and partially in public on our Facebook pages, that my dear friend and social media consulting colleague Courtney Herring, founder of The Champ Media Agency, and I had all weekend and into the following week as we watched the group grow from 365,000 to 500,000 to over a million members in under 10 days (as of this writing 9/27/2017 the group boasts 1,471,245 members, growing by almost half a million new members in under 48 hours)!

Because Courtney and I eat and sleep social media content production and marketing, by Saturday we had peered behind the Great Oz’s curtain, so to speak. We looked at the founder’s website (http://bigbeardbrand.com) and he didn’t have a Facebook pixel–a simple device that you install on your website so that you can capture, track, and, most importantly, market to visitors to your website, even when they don’t make a purchase or give you their email address when they visit your site.

Ever wonder why those new shoes you looked at on Amazon are showing up in your Facebook newsfeed? Amazon, and most online retailers, has a pixel, that attaches to you, knows you visited the site, knows what you looked at and then that you didn’t purchase, so Amazon follows you around, right onto Facebook, Instagram, and everywhere else online that you visit, to subtly remind you, “Hey, don’t forget you were considering buying these shoes. You know you want them.” Pixels can be used in a number of ways that are very helpful to businesses looking to reach new audiences, as well as convert those ‘warm leads’ aka visitors into sales.

A pixel is an extremely simple device, which is not only FREE, but can be installed by anyone, on most hosted websites, IN MINUTES! So, when Courtney and I uncovered that the Beard Game Matters founder’s website was missing this simple device, our interest in his monetization strategy was piqued even further. On what other monetization opportunities may he be missing out?

Prepare to be Profitable

Following is a quick list of a few things you can do BEFORE going viral, that will enable you to have the opportunity to reap big financial reward for your marketing efforts.

  1. If you create a Facebook group, close the group and capture emails for new members before they join. Once they join they will no longer have an incentive to give you their email address—or you’ll need to create a new incentive. Remember, Facebook owns the user, until you have a way to connect with her directly, i.e., via her email address.
  2. Use email and contact management platforms such as MailChimp or AWeber. Using something like Google Docs/Sheets is inefficient and can be vulnerable to hacking. Many contact management services are free depending on your email list size, and will enable you to sort and target people as your list grows. (Added bonus, most ensure that you stay on the right side of online marketing laws).
  3. Add a Facebook pixel to your website. This will ensure that you can track and retarget visitors to your website and learn more about their online buying habits. Big Brother is watching and, in this instance, YOU are Big Brother.
  4. Acknowledge what you don’t know and adjust accordingly. When it comes to marketing and social media virality, things move rather quickly. This can be great if you’re positioned to capitalize and monetize. If you’re not familiar with social media marketing, then I highly suggest that you hire someone who is. Investing in a professional social media marketer can position you to reap financial benefits from your efforts for the long term.
  5. BONUS: You do NOT have to start a Facebook group to capitalize on the benefits of a Facebook group. Member, Shahid Zhyir (pictured), gained over 46,000 reactions on his first post in the group and hundreds of friend requests. Zhyir is now exploring brand ambassador and modeling opportunities.

.

It Can Be Very Smart to Pivot. But How Wise is a Pirouette?

In recent years, as we look at launching lean and ideologies out of the Lean Startup movement, the word ‘pivot’ has become prevalent. In a nutshell, founders are encouraged to launch their ideas to market quickly and with as little upfront cost as possible and then ‘iterate’ or ‘pivot’—tweak or modify—their ideas to adjust to what consumers are willing to pay for. The concept in theory provides real-time market research.

In addition to being prepared when your product or service goes viral, you may also capitalize if your market dictates that you pivot—change direction from your initial offering. I emphasize may, because, depending on your team, market knowledge, etc. it may prove prudent in the long term to stay your course. The Beard Game Matters Facebook group founder says he started the group, “to have a collective space to collaborate with other men with beards and to promote his beard care products.” What he uncovered is that ALL social media is an opportunity for online dating.

And this is where it appears he has chosen to not just pivot but to change course completely. The group has gone from a place for bearded men to share grooming information to a place for bearded men “and the women who love them” to connect, romantically. The group now boasts opportunities for in-person singles mixers around the country and group members can sign up to get on the waiting list of the soon-to-be-launched Beard Game Matters online dating site.

How a candid photo of a mom grocery shopping went viral

by

Michelle Stein

posted in Parenting

If you’re a mom, chances are you have a phone filled with a million photos of your children. There might be some selfies and maybe a group shot once in a blue moon. But what plenty of mothers are lacking are images of them doing mundane, nitty-gritty parenting stuff — changing diapers, reading the same book for the tenth time in a row to our toddlers, letting our preschoolers “help” make lunch.

Mom of four Jess Wolfe recently shared an image like this, along with a powerful message. Her now-viral Facebook post features a photo of her finishing up a grocery shopping trip at Aldi with her young children in tow.

“Sweaty, baby strapped to my back, three year old insisting that her belly hurts and NEEDS her donut that she forgot to eat after lunch, 6 year old using everything in sight as a weapon, 7 year old wanting to spend the only dollar he has. This. This was my trip to the grocery today,” Wolfe wrote.

This frazzled mama was just trying to survive the barrage of kid shenanigans while bagging her groceries when a stranger approached them with a strange request.

“While I was bagging up my groceries (thanks Aldi) and trying to quietly keep from losing my ever loving sh*t, the lady next to me asked if I have one of those phones that takes pictures,” she continued. “Trying not to convey my annoyance to someone else adding to the million questions that make up my day, I replied that, yes I do have one of those fancy phones. She asked to take a picture of me with the kids. At the grocery. Together. She told me that she wishes she had photos of herself doing every day things with her kids. She validated the fact that a simple grocery trip is hard. She told me that what I do matters. She doesn’t miss what made the days hard, but she misses what made them sweet. I will always cherish this picture and the message that came with it.”

viral post mom shopping at Aldi

I absolutely love this story and the kind stranger. It’s always nice when our parenting struggles are validated. Normally, when I’m at Aldi with my three munchkins (or anywhere, for that matter,) I get “You sure have your hands full!” I always give a half-hearted laugh and respond, “Yes, I do!”

It’s harmless, really. But it isn’t particularly original…or helpful.

“Honestly, after the whole interaction, I got in the car and took a look at my phone and was shocked at how sentimental it made me feel,” Wolfe told BabyCenter. “I am a professional photographer, so I was expecting to be a little disappointed at the fact that it wasn’t technically a great photo…not to mention the fact that I hadn’t showered, my kids had dressed themselves and we looked like we had definitely seen better days. It’s such a precious gift to be captured doing just a normal thing with my kiddos … and even more precious that I’ve been able to reach so many women with the encouraging words that the woman who took the photo gave me.”

For me, this mom’s post instills a sense of urgency to acquire more candid shots of my mom-ing glory, before my kiddos are all grown up. That way, I can look back at these images in 10 years and totally NOT miss dragging three young children grocery shopping. (Though I’m sure I’ll miss their always-willing, full-body snuggles.) Time to recruit my husband as my personal photographer, so he can capture a more rounded representation of motherhood — like this one of my daughter “helping” me work.

Viral post reminds us “life is way too short to say no all the time”

by

Michelle Stein

posted in Parenting

Some days it seems like I’m saying “no” to my kids an average of 100 times per hour. “No, you can’t have ice cream for breakfast.” “NO RUNNING IN THE HOUSE.” “No, you may not bounce that ball off your sister’s head.” “No, we’re not going to Chuck E. Cheese’s today.” “I said NO!!!”

Obviously, sometimes a big, fat “no” is warranted. But after reading one mom’s viral Facebook post, I’m rethinking my knee-jerk reaction.

Mom-of-two Rachel Carpenter recently shared two photos of her daughter, Nevaeh, sporting bright pink hair with the biggest smile on her face. In the powerful Facebook post, Carpenter explained why she allowed her 10-year-old to dye her hair such an eccentric color.

“Life is way to(o) short to say NO all of the time,” she wrote. “This time last year she asked me if she could have pink hair and I said no. A few days later at a camp they were doing a demonstration involving fire and something went wrong and it caught her on fire.”

Nevaeh ended up having terrible burns on more than 70 percent of her body. Her family wasn’t even sure if she would live, initially. But this little fighter pulled through. In the past year, she has endured surgery and a long journey of healing and recovery.

“So this time when she asked me if she could have pink hair, I said yes,” Carpenter wrote. “That experience taught me you never know how much time you have left, with anymore. So say yes more often, and don’t care if anyone thinks your child with pink hair is ridiculous!! (within reason lol).”

Carpenter explained that she had originally rejected her daughter’s request for pink hair because Nevaeh was only 9 at the time, and she worried about what kinds of reactions it would get.

“Her accident made me realize tomorrow is not promised, no matter how young someone is,” she told BabyCenter. “Since then I have learned how extremely important is to pick your battles. Sometimes as parents, step parents, or any kind of guardian, we can feel overloaded with things our children ask for. It is just so important to not let that interfere with saying yes sometimes. Let your child live a little, something as simple as washable hair dye can make them extremely happy. I am so glad she is still here and had the chance to ask me that question again. So tell your child you love them as much as you can, hug them a little tighter and say yes (within reason) more often.”

With over 44,000 likes and more than 22,000 shares on Carpenter’s post so far, I think it’s safe to say people are loving this mom’s message and Nevaeh’s pink ‘do. I know I am (I might be a little biased, though; I’m currently rocking pink hair of my own.) So thank you, Rachel, for this inspiring reminder to say “yes” more often to my children. But I still think ice cream for breakfast is a really, really bad idea.

Do you find yourself saying “no” a millions times a day? What do you think of this mom’s message?

Viral Post Highlights The Body Image Messages Girls Get From Their Moms

A Missouri mom’s Facebook post is highlighting the way mothers can have an impact on their daughters’ relationships with body image.

On May 8, Brittney Johnson posted a photo of herself trying on a swimsuit in a Target fitting room with her 4-year-old daughter Payton.

In the caption, Johnson described the day she spent with her daughter, noting that Payton chatted with a barista at Starbucks, made sure to say “please” and “thank you” at dinner, complimented a stranger’s’ hair, high-fived the attendant at a carousel she rode and even gave her two extra ride tokens to another little girl.

At the end of the day, Johnson and her daughter went to Target, where the mom picked out some swimsuits to try on. As she tried them on, she sent photos to her friends to help make choices. During this process, she snapped the photo she shared in her Facebook post.

“See that sweet baby girl in the corner? With half a dress on and one of the bikini tops I had picked out?” Johnson wrote. “I stopped for a second to see what she would say and when she turned to the mirror, she said ‘Wow I just love cheetah print! I think I look beautiful! Do you think I look beautiful too?!’”

At that point, the mom said she realized the impact her words and actions have on her daughter.

“I tell her that she is beautiful every single day,” Johnson wrote. “She is kind walking through the mall, because I tell her she is kind everywhere else. She is polite at the order counter because she hears me when I’m polite to strangers everywhere. She gives compliments to people she doesn’t know because she loves how it feels when she hears them.”

Applying this realization to parenting, she added. “When we are in a dressing room, with swimsuits of all God forsaken things, there is a split moment when I have the power to say ‘wow I have really gotten fat this year’ OR ‘wow I love this coral color on me!’ And those are the words burned into my daughters brain.”

Johnson called on her fellow parents to be examples for their kids when it comes to manners, kindness and body image.

“I am not a size zero. I never will be. I have big thighs and a huge rump and for some reason the middle of my body gets more tan than the rest?” she wrote. “But this body made a whole other body. I am strong. I am able. And I am happy. I don’t have to be beautiful like you, because I am beautiful like me.”

She added, “And as my daughter gets older, and she faces judgement and criticism, I will always remind her that the girls who look the prettiest in a two piece, or a body suit, or a freaking Snuggie, are the ones who are happy. Because that’s ALL that matters. And I want her to look at herself every single day and say ‘Oh wow! I think I look beautiful!’ because EVERY girl deserves to feel that.”

Johnson’s post received over 227,000 likes. She told HuffPost she was touched by the overwhelming response and ability to connect with fellow parents. Many people reached out to say her post inspired them to stop saying negative things about themselves.

“It has been such a great reminder that we are all on the same team, have the same fears and ultimately want the same thing for our children ― love,” she said.

“For every mean comment that I’ve received about my body, I’ve received at least a thousand positive comments, and I have to say that gives me a little more faith in humanity than when I started,” the mom added.

Johnson said she’s become a strong proponent of self-love. “I’m a mom but I am a lot of other things too. I’m a friend and a woman, and I think that sometimes going through the motions of being a momma drowns out the time to be all of the other things too,” she told HuffPost, adding that she thinks it’s particularly important to teach young girls to love others and themselves.

“I hope people can read my post and then look at themselves and say, ‘Here I am, and I am beautiful just the way I am.’ I hope people take away from it that our kids should know self-love and will only learn it if we take the time to teach it to them,” Johnson said.

She added, “And no matter what kind of mom you are or what size, you are beautiful and have every right to feel like you are.”

This Elderly Couple’s Viral Story Is Proof That True Love Exists

If you don’t believe in true love, you haven’t heard Iris and John’s love story.

In a viral Facebook clip from the British E.R. documentary series “24 Hours in A&E,” we meet lovebirds John and Iris, a couple who have been married for 65 years.

Though John is in the hospital for a heart problem, all his focus is on Iris, who sits nearby him throughout the hospital visit. John eventually reveals that Iris is in the first stage of Alzheimer’s disease

“The snag is, you know, it’s not going to get any better,” John tells the camera. “It’s sad. But I mustn’t be greedy. We’ve both had a good life together.”

John also describes the couple’s first date on June 28, 1946. (Yes, he remembers the exact day.)

Though his initial plan was to take Iris to an expensive theater in Leicester Square, his future wife suggested a cheaper movie. After the movie ― the 1946 film noir “The Dark Corner” ― the pair ate beans on toast together. Years later, John saw the movie playing on television and recorded it.

“Now, when we have special celebrations, we have our beans on toast and we have the film,” he says.

The clip has garnered over 350,000 “likes” on Facebook and left plenty of people teary-eyed.

“That hit me so hard,” one man wrote.”The fact that he’s grateful for the time they’ve had, I can’t think of what to say. Just beautiful.”

“Thanks, now I’m sitting at work bawling my eyes out! I’m a bouncer!” another man admitted. “Do you know how hard it is to have people take you seriously as a bouncer when you’re crying?”

It’s OK, bouncer bro. Just show them the clip and they’ll understand.

People Can’t Find This Woman’s Legs In Viral Group Photo

Over Christmas weekend, one photo of six women perplexed the internet.

The photo posted to Reddit on Christmas Eve is of a group of friends sitting on a couch and sipping beers.

At first glance, everything appears normal. It’s just a regular ol’ winter gathering at the home of a friend who is obviously a Green Bay Packers fan. No big deal.

That is until you start counting the legs-to-woman ratio. The third woman from the left appears to have no legs.

Hundreds of Redditors took on the original poster’s challenge to “find the middle girls [sic] legs.” Most people could only find five pairs of legs, but there are six smiling faces with torsos in the photo.

A lot of people believed the woman was simply “womanspreading,” with one leg draped over the friend to her left and one leg tucked under the woman to her right. Others believed that the woman farthest to the left was simply sitting on top of her own feet, hiding the bottom part of her legs from view of the camera.

One person even suggested the woman was simply a “couch-centaur.”

Eventually, Redditors got a little creative and started using colors to make sense of it all.

The picture created so much of an internet storm that “Fox & Friends,” after two days of discussing the phenomenon on national TV, did their own deep investigation into the photo.

Turns out the apparently legless woman, Anna Mantifel, was baffled by her lack of legs too.

“Essentially we thought we were taking a girls’ picture down here at our friend’s house,” Mantifel, who clearly does have two legs, told “Fox & Friends.” “When the picture was later posted to Facebook … I commented, saying, ‘This is so weird. Where are my legs?’”

The six women re-created the viral photo for Fox’s investigation to provide a little bit of clarity to the couch conundrum.

“Once we kind of figured out Anna’s legs were missing, it also kind of looked weird by me, too,” Kelly McCarthy, the woman seated to the right of Mantifel, told Fox. “So it’s kind of confusing on this side of the couch in general.”

So what’s actually happening here? It’s just an optical illusion.

The woman farthest to the left ― let’s call her Friend 1 ― is wearing plain black jeans and her legs are crossed over, blocking McCarthy’s legs. McCarthy is also wearing black jeans, but hers are ripped at the knee, which can be seen popping up right above Friend 1’s legs.

Redditor 10ADPDOTCOM highlighted the women in different colors to show what’s happening.

Now, let’s all shut off our screens for the rest of 2016 and never look at this photo again.
