Theresa May survived the confidence vote and will continue as Prime Minister

Here’s everything to know…

REX

Ever since Theresa May stepped into the role of Prime Minister following the divisive 2016 Brexit vote, it has been a turbulent ride.

Two years later and there are accusations of little progress made, with this Brexit appearing to be softer and slower than anyone could have predicted.

But today, after more than 48 letters of complaint sent to Graham Brady, it was announced that Theresa’s days at No.10 could be numbered as Tory MPs requested a vote of confidence in their leader, with a potential no confidence vote triggering a new leadership competition.

But the results are officially in, and May has survived the confidence vote.

The Prime Minister needed 159 votes to remain leader, something she succeeded, getting 200 votes, with 117 MPs voting against her.

‘Sir Graham Brady has confirmed that he has received 48 letters from Conservative MPs so there will now be a vote of confidence in my leadership of the Conservative party,’ Theresa May announced this morning. ‘I will contest that vote with everything I’ve got.’

‘Delivering the Brexit people voted for. Building a country that works for everyone. I have devoted myself unsparingly to these tasks ever since I became prime minister,’ May concluded. ‘And I stand ready to finish the job.’

The vote took place tonight between 6pm and 8pm, seeing Tory MPs reveal their trust in their leader.

Before the vote, Theresa reportedly told MPs that she would not fight the next election, and would step down before it.

The Prime Minister is now immune from leadership challenges for the next year.

We will continue to update this story.

McConnell must allow a vote on bipartisan criminal justice reform

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell won’t commit to a floor vote for the First Step Act — even though the bipartisan bill has President Trump’s backing and is sure to pass. This is nuts. First Step would trim some mandatory sentences for drug-related felonies, make more nonviolent offenders eligible for early release and provide more…

Sole Black GOP Senator Votes for Judge Accused of Suppressing Black Vote

The U.S. Senate’s only Black Republican senator is facing heat after voting for a controversial judicial nominee, who’s been accused of hurting Black voters. South Carolina Republican Sen. Tim Scott voted to advance the vote for Thomas Farr for the Eastern District of North Carolina on Wednesday, per CNN. Vice President Mike Pence was the tie-breaking vote, after the 50-50 vote. All 49 Senate Democrats opposed Farr’s nomination, referencing his past support of legal measures that negatively impacted African-American voters, such as working with the with North Carolina Republican Party on the state’s congressional map, which was struck down earlier […]

Yvonne’s Cheerful Bedroom

Yvonne Whelan: For this cheerful, modern bedroom, I started with a warm earthy Antique French floor in Bordeaux and a neutral wall color paired with Beauti-Tone’s Color of the Year, Tropic of Conversation. I would use this bold color to paint a sliding barn door for a stunning feature. Furniture and accessories in bold, black and white patterns give the space a very modern feel. A few pops of orange carry the barn door color throughout the room without over complicating the look.– Click here for more information and sources.

Jacklynn’s Contemporary Living Room

Jacklynn Little: My inspiration started with the Color of the Year from Beauti-tone called Tropic Of Conversation and a beautiful French Antique floor in Bordeaux. I added hot pink to both balance out the bright orange and give the room a bold look. The sofa is a neutral shade of cream which gives great contrast to the wall color. Pillows in orange and pink fabrics in a variety of patterns will make this room both contemporary and fun to live in. A luxurious rug pulls together all the colors in the room and the gold coffee table and side tables give the look an elegant feel.- Click here for more information and sources.

Facebook Makes It Easier Than Ever For You to Vote

Over the past couple of years, Facebook has been instrumental in making it easier for users to prepare for Election Day. They’ve done this by supporting voter registration drives in both the primaries and general election through the nonpartisan TurboVote Challenge.

This year is no different. They’ve added feature sets that let people ask their friends to join them in registering to vote. In addition to that, research shows people who make a plan to vote are more likely to do so, so the platform is helping users find their polling locations, with the option to set a reminder just in case it slips their mind.

One of the biggest reasons folks shy away from voting is because they don’t know the candidates or understand the policies and the research can get confusing. Facebook now has a new tool that provides Candidate Info, which lets people hear directly from their federal, state, and local candidates on why they’re running for office, what policy issues they care about, and what they hope to accomplish if elected.

vote

Facebook Civic Engagement Infographic (Facebook)

The short videos allow the candidates to showcase the following:

  • Introduce themselves to voters and tell people about the office they’re running for.
  • What their top policy priority is and why they are the right person to work on it
  • Talk about what makes them most qualified to represent their district
  • Address what the most important goal is they hope to accomplish in office and how they plan to get it done

Facebook isn’t alone in this. Instagram is rolling out their feature set as well. You can now post that you voted with a custom “I Voted” sticker and a “We Voted!” story will appear at the front of your stories bar on November 6th so you can see all of your friends who participated. The goal for this is to encourage more users to get out and vote. As they see their friends, counterparts, and associates doing so, the hope is that it will create a viral effect encouraging others users to do so.

Millennials Could Make a Big Difference in the Midterm Elections. But Will They Vote?

One point appears to be clear: Millennials will be looking for game-changing U.S. political candidates as Election Day draws closer.

Fifty-five percent of millennials report they will definitely or probably vote in the 2018 midterm elections, according to a new NBC News/GenForward survey. The elections occur on Nov. 6. Some 19% of millennials indicate that they will definitely or probably not vote. Another 25% are unclear if they will vote or not.

A majority of millennials have regularly indicated they plan to vote for Democrats in the 2018 congressional elections within the last year. Roughly a quarter plan to vote for Republicans. Another quarter doesn’t plan to vote for either party, uncertain what they will do.

Survey findings showed that “the candidate quality that matters most to millennials’ vote in the upcoming midterms is someone who can bring about needed change, signifying that young people are still on the hunt for someone they feel can make a difference.”

Forty-two percent of millennials surveyed reported their midterm vote will be in opposition to President Donald Trump. Just 14% say their vote in this year’s midterm election will back Trump, while 24% contend Trump won’t affect their vote at all.

The survey of 1,910 adults ages 18-34 was conducted nationally from July 26 through Aug. 13 this year.

Intriguingly, millennials are not overly thrilled with either party. In the past year, the survey showed millennials perspective of the Democratic Party was split between favorable and unfavorable. During the same time, about 6 in 10 millennials have asserted unfavorable impressions of the Republican Party, with fewer than 3 in 10 disclosing favorable views.

The survey also suggested that “millennials are disillusioned about the midterm elections.”

On the numbers front, millennials could be a force in the election if a great number vote. Millennials are expected to soon top baby boomers in size demographically. Totaling 71 million in 2016, millennials in America are closing in on baby boomers (74 million) in population and expected to become the nation’s largest living adult generation in 2019, according to the Pew Research Center.

And while millennials might be more likely to vote for Democrats, a big uncertainty is how many of them will actually vote. Observers conclude that millennials over the years have not displayed high turnouts for midterm elections.

FASHION DEALS UPDATE:

‘People Must Vote!’ Robert De Niro Responds After Police Intercept Suspicious Package

Robert De Niro is thanking “security and law enforcement people” after police intercepted a suspicious package mailed to his New York City restaurant on Thursday.

“I thank God no one’s been hurt, and I thank the brave and resourceful security and law enforcement people for protecting us,” De Niro said in a statement Friday. “There’s something more powerful than bombs, and that’s your vote. People MUST vote!”

The actor was an intended recipient of one of at least 13 packages allegedly sent by Florida man Cesar Sayoc, who was arrested by federal agents on Friday afternoon. Attorney General Jeff Sessions confirmed at a press conference Friday that Sayoc was specifically targeting Democrats. “He appears to be a partisan,” Sessions said.

De Niro has publicly condemned President Trump multiple times, most famously saying “f**k Trump” at the Tony Awards this year.

Law enforcement officials are still investigating the packages, many of which were addressed to high-ranking Obama Administration officials, including former President Barack Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former CIA Director John Brennan and former Attorney General Eric Holder.

Other intended recipients have also spoken out against the attacks. One of them, James Clapper, the former Director of National Intelligence and frequent critic of President Donald Trump, said on CNN he believed the packages were a form of domestic terrorism.

Another intended target, former Vice President Joe Biden, said Thursday that he hoped the country would pull together after the incidents. “My hope is this recent spate of who knows what they were, pipe bombs being mailed, might wake everybody in my business up a little bit and we will begin to put this nation back together again.” he said.

Congresswoman Maxine Waters, also a target, said in a statement that she is “appreciative of the law enforcement entities who intercepted the package and are investigating this matter.

“I unequivocally condemn any and all acts of violence and terror,” Waters added.

Amy Schumer Announced Her Pregnancy While Calling on People to Vote for a List of Candidates

Amy Schumer announced Monday night that she is pregnant with her first baby.

The comedian teased the news by posting an image of her and her husband’s Chris Fisher faces photoshopped onto the bodies of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who just announced their own pregnancy last week.

In the caption, Schumer linked to the profile of political reporter Jessica Yellin, and promised “exciting news” ahead. In a video about the upcoming midterm elections in November, Yellin posted a list of Schumer’s 20 recommendations for candidates. The list ended with the words: “I’m pregnant – Amy Schumer”.

Schumer, who is well-known for her outspoken political activism, was arrested while protesting Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court earlier this month.

The Trainwreck actress is a staunch advocate for women’s rights and has teamed up with her cousin, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, to push for stricter gun-control laws.

Ariana Grande Urges People To Vote After Taylor Swift’s Political Message Influences Many To Register!

After Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande is the next superstar to encourage her fans to go vote in the midterm elections! While Taylor’s post was long and detailed, as it was her very first politically-charged message, Ariana’s was simple and straight to the point. She captioned a pic of her ballot envelope: ‘vote, f***ers.’

But considering that she said ‘bye bye to the internet for just a lil bit’ only a few days ago and still reminded her followers to vote, makes it worth noting!

Meanwhile, Ariana has been leaning on her loved ones since she and Pete Davidson broke their engagement.

Her social media silence was more like a way to only post about things that really matter to her for a while.

As for Taylor Swift, her lengthy post came as a huge surprise as she had managed to stay away from politics before then.

She wrote: ‘In the past I have been reluctant to voice my political opinions, but due to some events in my life and in the world in the last two years, I feel really differently about that now.’

Taylor went on to say that ‘I believe in the fight for the LGBTQ rights, and any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or on gender is WRONG. I believe the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color’s terrifying, sickening and prevalent.’

View this post on Instagram

I’m writing this post about the upcoming midterm elections on November 6th, in which I’ll be voting in the state of Tennessee. In the past I’ve been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions, but due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now. I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country. I believe in the fight for LGBTQ rights, and that any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is WRONG. I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening and prevalent. I cannot vote for someone who will not be willing to fight for dignity for ALL Americans, no matter their skin color, gender or who they love. Running for Senate in the state of Tennessee is a woman named Marsha Blackburn. As much as I have in the past and would like to continue voting for women in office, I cannot support Marsha Blackburn. Her voting record in Congress appalls and terrifies me. She voted against equal pay for women. She voted against the Reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which attempts to protect women from domestic violence, stalking, and date rape. She believes businesses have a right to refuse service to gay couples. She also believes they should not have the right to marry. These are not MY Tennessee values. I will be voting for Phil Bredesen for Senate and Jim Cooper for House of Representatives. Please, please educate yourself on the candidates running in your state and vote based on who most closely represents your values. For a lot of us, we may never find a candidate or party with whom we agree 100% on every issue, but we have to vote anyway. So many intelligent, thoughtful, self-possessed people have turned 18 in the past two years and now have the right and privilege to make their vote count. But first you need to register, which is quick and easy to do. October 9th is the LAST DAY to register to vote in the state of TN. Go to vote.org and you can find all the info. Happy Voting! 🗳😃🌈

A post shared by Taylor Swift (@taylorswift) on

Proving how much her voice can influence people for the better, voter registration spiked massively immediately after her message was posted!

‘We are up to 65,000 registrations in a single 24-hour period,’ Vote.org sector of communications’ Kamari Guthrie stated.

Two days later, Vote.org released another statement about Taylor’s impact.

‘Since Taylor Swift’s well-publicized Instagram post on Sunday night, in which she urged her 112 Million fans to vote, Vote.org has found a massive spike in voter registering nationwide. While there’s several factors that contributed to this, a majority of new registrations since Taylor Swift’s post on Sunday have been people between the ages of 18 and 29 years old – about 102,000 out of 240,000 total new registrations in less than 48 hours.’

Let’s hope Ariana Grande will manage to do the same!
