Walmart Is Planning to Develop Tablets as the Retailer Makes Moves Into the Tech Industry

It looks like Walmart is planning to start making its own tablets. In a product application with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission, the retailer included photos of the device, which will be made by a Chinese supplier and run on Google’s Android operating system, Bloomberg reports.

The tablets will be sold under Walmart’s ONN brand, the photos show. Walmart has not yet released information about the cost of the device or when it will hit stores, but a spokesperson for the retailer confirmed to both Bloomberg and CNBC that “a private brand tablet is in the works.”

Tablet shipments fell 6.2% last year, as the smartphone market continued to grow. The top-selling tablets were Apple’s iPad, followed by Samsung Electronics, and Amazon.com Inc.

Even so, Bloomberg reports that some retailers have successfully developed kid-friendly tablets, that are also more affordable than Apple’s line of iPads. And Walmart hopes to do the same.

The retailer has been making moves into the tech industry, as it focuses on home goods and electronics moving forward. Walmart has nonetheless struggled to develop its image as a more “modern” company, while its biggest competitor Amazon has been an innovative force with its own electronics.

Walmart was represented as a tech company at this year’s South by Southwest conference in Austin with Chief Technology Officer Jeremy King giving a presentation about some of the new technology in its stores, CNBC reports.

“For years now … I’ve wanted people to understand we are building a tech organization,” King told CNBC. “I’ve got a machine learning team. We have some of the best apps in the world.”

Think Walmart Can’t Beat Amazon? Think Again: E-Commerce Extends Streak of Big Sales Gains

Walmart‘s strategy of blending stores and e-commerce to push back at Amazon.com is working.

The world’s largest retailer

wmt

reported on Thursday that comparable sales at its namesake U.S. stores rose 3.4% in the third quarter, above Wall Street expectations for 2.9% according to Consensus Metrix, setting it up for a strong holiday season. That performance was boosted by a 43% jump in e-commerce sales, the result of its efforts such as dramatically increasing locations where customers can retrieve online grocery orders, the addition of brands like Lord & Taylor and ModCloth to its web site and a vast expansion of its online marketplace. All Walmart stores ship online orders and allow customers to retrieve online orders.

“Our company is moving faster and we’re accelerating innovation,” Walmart Inc. CEO Doug McMillon said in a statement. “We’re creating a business model that functions as an ecosystem with the customer at the center.”

The years of mega-investments in e-commerce are paying off: digital consultancy eMarketer said in a report released Thursday that Walmart has now eclipsed Apple

It was the 16th quarter in row of growth in U.S. comparable sales at Walmart’s namesake stores, a metric that strips out revenue from newly closed or opened, and the 15th in a row of increased store visits by shoppers.

Elsewhere, results were also strong: comparable sales at its Sam’s Club division rose 5.7%, helped by the closing of weaker locations and strong digital growth. Sales at Walmart International rose 1.6% excluding the impact of currency fluctuations, helped by comparable sales increases in nine of its 10 foreign markets. Walmart reported adjusted earnings per share of $ 1.08, beating analysts’ forecasts of $ 1.01 per share and raised its U.S. sales growth expectation for the year.

Military Spouse Looking for a Job? Walmart Announces Preferred Hiring

Military spouses: Walmart would like to thank you for your service with a job.

The retail giant has announced it will give hiring preference to military spouses, who face the added burden of frequent relocation due to military transfers and deployments.

While the rest of the nation enjoyed an unemployment rate well under 5% in 2017, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce estimates military spouses and spouses of recent veterans faced a 16% unemployment rate for the same year.

Walmart previously offered military spouses and veterans the ability to transfer from one of its Walmart or Sam’s Club locations to another, but the company will now give hiring preference to any military spouse with a current Uniformed Services Identification Card.

This initiative comes five years after the company launched its Veterans Welcome Home program, which pledged to hire 250,000 military veterans by 2020.
