Florence’s first wave has potential to cause $5 billion in property damage

An estimated 250,000 homes in North Carolina will likely be affected, with the bulk of the damage in that state. Across both states, Florence could cause $ 3 billion to $ 5 billion in insured property losses from wind and storm surge, according to CoreLogic.

Why a blue wave in the midterms is no sure thing

The question of how President Trump is faring with the American electorate is obsessional for everyone interested in politics. The problem is there’s no reliable way to measure it, and we’re almost four months from the midterm election that will function as a partial national referendum on this question. So we’re all reduced to reading…

2018 WSL Big Wave Awards Celebrate World Record for Biggest Wave Ever Surfed

WSL PRESS RELEASE

SANTA MONICA, Calif./USA (Saturday, April 28, 2018) –  The world’s best big wave surfers gathered in Santa Monica tonight for the 2018 World Surf League (WSL) Big Wave Awards. The show at the Red Bull Headquarters awarded the best rides of the past year, including a new World Record from Brazil’s Rodrigo Koxa.
Rodrigo Koxa is now the official World Record holder for the biggest wave ever surfed in history after being awarded the Quiksilver XXL Biggest Wave award tonight. The judging panel for the Big Wave Awards concluded that the record-breaking wave surfed by Koxa at Nazaré, Portugal on November 8, 2017 was 80 feet (24.38 meters) overtaking Garrett McNamara’s record, whose wave was marked at 78 feet (23.77 meters) in 2011. The Quiksilver XXL Biggest Wave Award goes to the surfer who, by any means available, catches the biggest wave of the year. Not only did Koxa win this year’s honor, but he now holds the Guinness World Record for the biggest wave surfed.

“I try to surf big waves all my life and I had a huge experience in 2014 where I almost died at Nazaré,” Koxa said. “Four months later, I had bad dreams, I didn’t travel, I got scared, and my wife helped me psychologically. Now, I’m just so happy and this is the best day of my life. Thank you to WSL, it’s a dream come true.”

The Ride of the Year showcases the most remarkable big-wave imagery of surfers racing down giant waves, and Ian Walsh’s incredible barrel ride at the 2018 Pe’ahi Challenge earned him this year’s award. Walsh also earned the Tube of the Year Award for the same wave.

“For this wave, I feel like in a lot of ways more than catching this wave, this wave caught me,” Walsh said. “It’s a great snapshot of the comradery of our sport and I feel like we all rode this wave together as a unit. Congratulations to all the other outstanding nominees who are helping progress this sport, and the water safety that’s progressed with us to allow us to do that. I thank all the surfers before us, all the surfers right now, and all the kids that will surely take this sport to unprecedented heights. Let’s all do our part to keep the oceans clean and the beaches better than we found them.”

Paige Alms earned the Hydro Flask Women’s Best Performance of the Year Award for the third time in her career. In addition to celebrating the back-to-back win, Alms was also honored for defending her Big Wave Tour Crown after winning the Pe’ahi Challenge again this season. The first women’s WSL Big Wave competition was held in 2017, and Alms has dominated the big wave surfing scene since. Next season, Alms will battle to defend her Big Wave Title for an unprecedented third-straight win as the tour sees competitions at Pe’ahi in Hawaii and Mavericks in California.

“I just want to say thank you to all the nominees, this is a really fun platform to show our sport,” said Alms. “Congratulations to all the female nominees tonight, I feel like you all push me to be a better surfer and a better person. I really like being able to call all of you my friends. You’re all so inspiring. I’d also like to thank all the photographers and videographers who are putting this spotlight on us out of the pure joy they have for the sport.”

Up-and-comer Lucas “Chumbo” Chianca earned the Men’s Best Overall Performance Award after showcasing incredible surfing this season, including his win at the Nazaré Challenge earlier this year. The 22-year-old will undoubtedly be one to watch in the upcoming season as he joins the Big Wave Tour full-time.

2016 Paddle Award winner Aaron Gold dominated the Paddle category again this year for his wave at Pe’ahi on January 14, 2018. Gold still holds the record for the biggest paddle-in wave ever surfed at 63 feet (19.2 meters) from 2016. This year’s award-winning wave was measured at 55 feet (16.76 meters).

Andrew Cotton, the standout big wave surfer representing the United Kingdom, took home one of the night’s most anticipated awards, the Wipeout of the Year Award. Unfortunately, Cotton’s gut-wrenching fall at Nazaré led to a broken l2 vertebrae and sidelined the big wave charger for six months. Cotton has been recovering since the accident and is working to return to the water to earn the Ride of the Year and Biggest Wave awards next season.

“I’d like to thank the Nazaré crew, the Mayor, and the community there,” said Cotton. “They’ve become like a family to me. Can’t thank my own family enough for putting up with all the last minute travels and schedule they deal with, it’s incredible. Since that day of the injury, I’ve progressed more each day and now I’m just looking to get back out there on the waves I love to surf. This is the dream of any big wave surfer is to be in the XXL Awards and to get on tour, but for me, it’s always been about Biggest Wave or Ride of the Year. It’s amazing to be up there in front of your heroes after being out for over six months and my goal is to be back out there in the summer or by October to really start charging again.”

Allow Me to Present the Next Wave of the “Ugly” Sneaker

Every trend has a bell curve; popularity climbs and climbs and climbs until it doesn’t. As much as we love the chunky dad sneakers that have dominated 2018, at some point, the chunky-soled styles will give way to something new. If we were to take bets on what that might be, our money would be all in on Velcro sneakers. Think of these hassle-free shoes as the pared-down sibling to those over-the-top styles you’ve seen on the feet of all your favorite trendsetters.

While Velcro offers the same “so uncool it’s actually cool” aesthetic that have made dad sneakers a favorite, there’s a bit more room to pick your own level of commitment. Some styles skew minimalist while others are a statement dressers dream; this trend definitely isn’t one size fits all. So if you’re ready to give Velcro sneakers a try (trust us, you are), get ready to embrace your inner child and shop our favorite styles below.

Trendy without ever feeling like they’re trying too hard. Available in sizes 37 to 40.

Billy Kemper and Paige Alms Win 2017/2018 Big Wave Tour Titles

WSL PRESS RELEASE

LOS ANGELES, California/USA (Wednesday, February 28, 2018) – Today, Billy Kemper (HAW) and Paige Alms (HAW) officially earned the World Surf League (WSL) Big Wave Tour (BWT) men’s and women’s titles for the 2017/2018 season.

The 2017/2018 BWT season witnessed incredible performances from the world’s best surfers across three unique competitions — the Puerto Escondido Challenge in Mexico, the Pe’ahi Challenge in Hawaii, and the Nazaré Challenge in Portugal.

“Congratulations to our Big Wave Tour Champions, Paige Alms and Billy Kemper,” said Mike Parsons, WSL Big Wave Tour Commissioner. “Both of these competitors showcased groundbreaking performances this season in extremely challenging conditions. They truly demonstrate the commitment and courage required to compete and win at this level.

“This season we called on the Puerto Escondido Challenge, the Pe’ahi Challenge, and the Nazaré Challenge. Pe’ahi received a Gold coefficient with 55-foot face waves, and both Puerto and Nazaré received a Bronze coefficient with 35-foot face waves. We were not able to run the Mavericks Challenge this big wave season due to unfavorable conditions but are excited about the opportunity to run starting in October 2018.”

Maui’s Billy Kemper earned his first Big Wave Tour Title by making the Finals in all three BWT events this season, including runner-up finishes at Pe’ahi and Nazaré.

“I am overwhelmed and excited to be the Men’s Big Wave Tour Champion,” said Kemper. “It has been nothing but a blessing to be on this path, and I am so thankful for my family and everyone who has supported me to get here. I lost my older brother when I was eight years old and we thought he was going to be a World Champion. I wanted to live out my brother’s dream and accomplish this for my family.”

Over the past three years, Kemper has become a force on the big wave scene, most notably with his back-to-back Pe’ahi Challenge victories. In 2017, Kemper finished sixth on the BWT rankings but won the prestigious Big Wave Award Ride of the Year recognition for his incredible barrel at the Pe’ahi Challenge in 2016.

“Last year, my mom was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer,” Kemper said. “Everything I did this year was for my mom and the reality is that this, my goal to become champion, had a time limit to it. I felt like this was my chance and my opportunity. Tomorrow is never promised. It was hard enough leaving my mom for a week for the Nazaré Challenge. I basically told myself that it was an all-or-nothing situation. My goal was to have my mom see me as the best I ever was, right now, and I wanted to win this for her. I am so excited to be able to celebrate with my family and share this with my mom. It is truly a blessing and I am so thankful.”

The BWT Title race took a pivotal turn during the final event of the season, the Nazaré Challenge when Kemper’s second-place finish moved him just past Kai Lenny (HAW) for the rankings’ lead. Both Kemper and Lenny are leading the next generation of big wave surfers with their innovative and fearless performances in all conditions.

“I want to be a force to be reckoned with,” said Kemper. “I am very excited and thankful to be a part of this generation of surfers and a part of this turning point in surfing. There has been a changing of the guard on the Championship Tour — with surfers like John John Florence, Gabriel Medina, Filipe Toledo, Julian Wilson — and I’ve tried to take that as motivation into the Big Wave Tour. I want to bring something new and I am excited to be one of the frontrunners of this generation in big wave surfing.”

Today’s achievement marks Alms’ second BWT title-clinching, after earning the Big Wave crown last year. Alms successfully defended her Pe’ahi Challenge win in massive waves last October to take the Big Wave Rankings’ lead and further evidence her dominance at the infamous Jaws break.

“Winning a World Title, let alone two, has been a childhood dream since I can remember,” said Alms. “I am so honored to be able to win twice and bring the trophy back home to Maui, where it all started for me. It is an amazing feeling to be at the top with these awards and titles, but to be honest, win or lose, I feel like I’m always winning. Being able to do what I do and share that with my friends and family, I’m winning everyday. I hope that what I am accomplishing in my career will give hope and inspire the next generation to go after their goals and dreams.”

Alms has been charging big waves since she was 15 years old and now looks to be unstoppable amongst her competitors and against monstrous conditions. The Maui surfer earned the Women’s Best Performance recognition at the Big Wave Awards in 2017 after six-straight nominations starting in 2012.

In addition to her big-wave pursuits, Alms was also featured in a 2015 documentary called The Wave I Ride, from director Devyn Bisson. The film portrayed Alms’ journey to the big-wave arena, including both her support system — specifically, her partner and shaper, Sean Ordonez, and her mother — and the odd jobs and training routine that she has juggled along the way.

This year’s Women’s Big Wave Tour witnessed Alms win the Pe’ahi Challenge, with big wave legend Keala Kennelly (HAW) earning second place and Justine Dupont (FRA) in third.

“I believe that having a platform to perform in the best conditions with only six women in the water is one of the best ways to push the level of the sport,” continued Alms. “As big wave lineups get more and more crowded, I really look forward to having these events that allow for an empty lineup and being able to pick and choose our waves that you truly want. I really look forward to having more than one event next season. Although I think Jaws is by far the best wave on the tour, it will be nice to challenge ourselves in other conditions. I am really excited to surf Mavericks with just a handful of surfers out.”

Alms and Kemper will be recognized at the WSL Awards on March 8 on the Gold Coast of Australia and the Big Wave Awards scheduled for April 28 in Southern California.

The Blue Wave Is Real, and It Looks Really Big—Provided Democrats Don’t Block It

Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast

Two more districts flipped. In New Hampshire, Democrat Philip Spagnuolo won a county legislative seat by 8 percentage points in a district Donald Trump had carried by 13 points. In Connecticut, Democrat Phil Young won a state legislative seat that Hillary Clinton narrowly carried but that had been held by a Republican for the last 44 years. They make the 38th and 39th districts since Donald Trump’s election that have gone from Republican to Democrat.

So: How confident should Democrats be about all this? I’d say pretty confident, for a bunch of reasons. But let’s stick to five:

1. The generic polling has the Democrats pretty comfortably ahead. It’s been bouncing around—while Democrats have always has the lead, it narrowed in January and February but seems to be opening back up a little now. A CNN poll released Monday had it at 54-38. I should say, though, that the fivethirtyeight average as of Wednesday morning is lower, at 47-39.

Lucas Chianca Wins WSL Big Wave Tour Nazaré Challenge

NAZARÉ, Portugal (Sunday, February 11, 2018) – Lucas “Chumbo” Chianca (BRA) won the World Surf League (WSL) Big Wave Tour (BWT) Nazaré Challenge today after incredible performances at the Praia do Norte (North Beach) big-wave break in Nazaré, Portugal.

The second-ever BWT event at Nazaré ran over two days after dangerous conditions threatened the competitors following the opening heats on Saturday. Big Wave Tour Commissioner Mike Parsons, alongside the judging panel, rated conditions a Bronze coefficient with wave faces in the 25-to-35-foot category.

Competing in his second-ever BWT event, Chianca earned his first Finals appearance and first BWT win today after dominating the competitive 24-man field, made up of the world’s best male big wave surfers. The 22-year-old demonstrated command over Nazaré’s powerful waves and challenging whitewater speeds to climb up to World No. 5 on the Big Wave Tour rankings.

Nazare Challenge 2018
Lucas Chianca of Brasil advanced to the Semifinal 2018 Nazaré Challenge after winning in Round One Heat 1at Nazaré, Leiria,Portugal.

“I am stoked to win this event,” Chianca said. “Thank you to everyone for all of their support. I am grateful to win this event and all these guys competing are so crazy and inspiring. It was hard because when you get the call for BWT events, it is at the last minute. We flew here as soon as we got the call, were a bit tired, and then just went straight into the competition the next day. The waves yesterday were so gnarly and scary. And then today, we were on again. I am super stoked. Thank you.”

The six-man Final witnessed reigning BWT Champion Grant “Twiggy” Baker (ZAF), 2017/2018 Puerto Escondido Challenge winner Kai Lenny (HAW), two-time Pe’ahi Challenge winner Billy Kemper (HAW), and up-and-comers Natxo Gonzalez (EUK), Nathan Florence (HAW), and Chianca go all out for the event win.

Lenny kicked off the hour-long Final with a low-range score, a 3.83 (out of a possible 10). The next wave of the set saw a split peak between Baker and Chianca. Baker was only able to pick up a 3.50, while Chianca gained control of the heat with an authoritative 7.33. Gonzalez challenged Chianca with two mid-range scores, but the Brazilian punctuated his performance with a solid 6.73. Kemper stayed patient and was able to collect a 4.83 and 4.67 at the end of the heat to surpass Gonzalez, Lenny, Baker, and Florence for second place.

Kemper’s runner-up finish now puts him at World No. 1 on the Big Wave Tour rankings, topping Lenny by only 2,311 points. His recent success, both on the WSL Qualifying Series (QS) and Big Wave Tour, is a testament to his training and commitment to surfing. Not only does Kemper lead the BWT ranks, he recently won the Sunset Open Qualifying Series to put him in second place on the Hawaii/Tahiti Nui Regional QS rankings.

“I am over the moon right now,” said Kemper. “First and foremost, I want to thank the country of Portugal. All of the people here are absolutely amazing and this place is beautiful. The warm welcome that you give all of us surfers is next to none. I am very thankful. I came here with that goal to make the Final and do as best as I could. Obviously, that was in my mind the whole time, but I just took it heat-by-heat, wave-by-wave. I am very thankful and stoked to end up where I am at.”

Jamie Mitchell (AUS), 2016/2017 Nazaré Challenge winner, was eliminated in the first Semifinal heat along with yesterday’s Round One standouts Alex Botelho (PRT) and Peter Mel (USA). Mitchell fought his way through the six-man lineup but fell just 1.20 points short of advancing to the Final. The Australian currently sits in 6th on the BWT rankings with only 17 days remaining in the tour window.

Tom Lowe (GBR) attracted international attention after his pencil-dive wipeout from a monstrous Nazaré wave in 2016 and came into this event ready to perform. The surfer from Cornwall proved to be a serious threat with his Round 1 Heat 4 win but could not find the same rhythm to advance out of the Semifinals. Lowe has become a household name with his Top 10 ranking on the WSL Big Wave Tour this season and will exit in 11th place.

Today’s win marked a first for Chianca, but also a last for his mentor, Carlos Burlé (BRA). A fellow Brazilian who pioneered big-wave surfing and rose to become a BWT Champion, Burlé retired last year but competed at this event as an end-of-career victory lap.The fifty-year-old big wave surfer was eliminated yesterday in Round One Heat 2.

“I am super stoked to be able to work with Lucas (Chianca) — such a great talent — and be able to help the sport still after retiring,” said Burlé. “It has been an amazing life pursuing big waves and watching and witnessing all the building of this beautiful sport that I love so much. What I see for big wave surfing is a bright future. I see a lot of young surfers coming with talent and performance in huge waves. It is going to get better and better as the time passes by.”

The Mavericks Challenge still has the potential to run before the Big Wave Tour season closes on February 28, 2018. BWT officials will continue to monitor swell systems and weather patterns and will only call the event on when surf reaches the 30-foot-plus mark, mobilizing on 72 hours’ notice.

Big Wave Tour Nazarè Challenge 2018 Was Given The Green Light

WSL Press Release

NAZARÉ, Portugal (Wednesday, February 7, 2018) – The World Surf League (WSL) Big Wave Tour (BWT) is placing the Nazaré Challenge in Nazaré, Portugal on Green Alert to commence on Saturday, February 10, 2018. Praia do Norte (North Beach), a break notorious for its powerful waves and dangerous whitewater speeds, has seen monstrous waves this season and now event organizers are tracking conditions favorable enough to run the highly-anticipated competition.
“We are excited about what we are seeing at Nazaré,” said Mike Parsons, WSL Big Wave Tour Commissioner. “We are calling the WSL Nazaré Challenge ON for this Saturday, February 10. With a solid swell coming from the NW, we are looking at around 9-to-12 feet of deepwater swell that will translate to 25-to-35 foot faces by mid-morning and potentially pushing 40 feet later in the day. There is potential that the winds might come up when we run, so we plan to start early in the morning and finish before it comes up too high.”

The second-ever Nazaré Challenge in Portugal will see the world’s best take on some of the heaviest waves in the world. Defending event winner Jamie Mitchell (AUS) and the men’s big wave field will be put to the ultimate test as they battle the infamous break that has long been considered inaccessible to paddle-in-surfing. Kai Lenny (HAW), current Big Wave Tour rankings leaders, will look to improve his 13th place finish at Nazaré.

The 2017/2018 WSL Big Wave Tour has completed its first two events of the season with Lenny winning the Puerto Escondido Challenge in Mexico, and Ian Walsh (HAW) and Paige Alms (HAW) taking out the Pe’ahi Challenge in Hawaii.

Formed in 2009, the Big Wave Tour joined the WSL in 2014 and has produced historic performances at never-before-contested venues such as Nazaré in Portugal and Pe’ahi on Maui’s North Shore. Monitoring swell systems and weather patterns throughout the season, the Big Wave Tour only runs events when surf reaches the 30-foot-plus mark, mobilizing on 72 hours’ notice with an international field of Big Wave men’s and women’s athletes.

Surfline, Official Forecasters for the 2017/2018 Nazaré Challenge, are calling for:

XL to possibly XXL NW swell is developing for Nazare on Saturday the 10th thanks to a strong, double-barreled area of low pressure now stretching over Greenland. Model guidance indicates that wind of 40-45 knots will develop in this fetch over the next 12-24 hours, with seas of 35-40 feet also expected to develop just east of Greenland.

At this point, we’ll look for building, longer period NW swell through the morning on Saturday, with 20-35’+ faces. The swell looks to peak from around midday and hold over the afternoon with solid 25-35’+ faces and occasional sets to 40’+ faces. There will also be some short period NW swell running in the morning, which will give the surf at least somewhat of a jumbled feel, but that short period swell will ease through the day.

Wind, while not ideal, does look manageable. Offshore to side-offshore flow from the NE to NNE is currently expected in the morning in the 10-15 knot range, trending to side shore north at 15 knots+ from late morning through the afternoon.

The 2017/2018 WSL Big Wave Tour is proudly supported by Corona, the Official Beer of the Big Wave Tour (excluding the US), and Quiksilver Airlift, the Official Inflatable Vest of the 2017/2018 Big Wave Tour.

The 2017/2018 Nazaré Challenge competitor list will be released closer to the event start. Please check back at WorldSurfLeague.com for updates.

First Wave by Suzanne Yoder

Does everyone remember their first wave? Mine was 20 years ago and I can close my eyes and live it like it was yesterday.

Having taken a ‘surf lesson’ where I was pushed into waves and fell gracelessly off every single one of them, I was determined to get this on my own. I bought a board, keeping it simple with a 7’8” egg … plain white with a balsa stringer and three glassed in fins. Having spent my early childhood in southern California, I had the advantage of understanding waves, body surfing, and feeling confident in the ocean. But at 27, learning to pop up and actually maintain my balance on the board was my biggest hurdle. I could catch a wave, but I couldn’t ride it.

Then came that evening, at Tourmaline. I had just finished work and rushed home before sunset. Pealing off my scrubs, I tucked my board under my arm, and jogged the quick block to the beach access. I had been getting frustrated with my lack of progress but I can be tenacious when it comes to personal goals and I wasn’t going to give this up. After almost an hour of falling off every time I tried to stand, determination began to flag towards discouragement. Then I saw the dolphins. It was a small wave but glassy, rippled with the reflection of a colorful sunset. I watched as the pod of dolphins began surfing. There was no way I was going to miss this wave, and no way I was going to fall off. I was going to surf with the dolphins. And so I did.

That was my first wave, I still remember what it looked like and how it felt to stand on the board and ride down the face. I remember how thrilled I was to have finally figured out the delicate equation of timing and balance. I remember laughing at the dolphin’s effortless grace and I remember wanting more!

It is something that gets you at the core. In the 20 years since that moment, my relationship with the ocean and surfing has evolved. I have made friends because of our mutual love of the sport. I have traveled all over the world exploring new oceans and marveling at the common threads that bind all of us surfers. I have had great sessions where everything synced and awful days where I thought I was never going to want to surf again. The ocean has humbled me, challenged me, celebrated and exalted me, and constantly reminded me that I am but a small speck in this great big world. I have shaped my life so that I can live by the ocean, and I have vowed to never move away from the coast. I surf as often as I can, traveling to new places and meeting new friends. And when the dolphins come out to play, I say silent thanks – for their encouragement, their example, and their help on that first wave.

Does everyone remember their first wave? I think they do.

Upcoming WSL Big Wave Tour Northern Hemisphere Season Officially Opens

LOS ANGELES, California/USA (Sunday, October 15, 2017) – The Northern Hemisphere portion of the World Surf League (WSL) Big Wave Tour (BWT) officially opens today and will run through February 28, 2018. The world’s best big wave surfers will now prepare to take on three of the most challenging big wave breaks on the planet — Nazaré in Portugal, Pe’ahi in Hawaii, and Mavericks in California.

Starting today, the highly-anticipated winter season of the Big Wave Tour will have the opportunity to run the Nazaré Challenge in Portugal and Pe’ahi Challenge in Maui, Hawaii. The start date for the competition window for the Mavericks event — along with a traditional opening ceremony — will be set shortly following the coordination with the array of governmental agencies involved with the production of the event. The WSL’s acquisition of the permit for the contest was finalized last week and preparations for the first Mavericks Challenge are now moving forward as swiftly as possible.

“We are excited to get the Big Wave Tour back underway with the winter season,” said Mike Parsons, WSL BWT Commissioner. “We have the window for Nazaré and Pe’ahi opening today and are working diligently with all agencies to finalize details for Mavericks. We appreciate the ongoing support from the local community, and we anticipate a great season and epic conditions for the world’s best big wave surfers.”

The Northern Hemisphere season will welcome back the Women’s Pe’ahi Challenge for its second year. A decorated lineup of the leading big wave surfers has been invited to compete at the famed break in Haiku, Maui, Hawaii. Last year’s inaugural event saw Paige Alms (HAW)claim the historic victory. This year’s event will feature six women battling in a one-off Final for the prestigious win.

The world’s best female big wave surfers will also have the opportunity to compete at Mavericks this upcoming season. The WSL Commissioner’s Office will work with a committee made up of Mavericks surfing icons to select six of the best female big wave surfers. The committee will consider performance results from the 2016 WSL Big Wave Awards, experience surfing at Mavericks, and overall big wave experience at all big wave locations around the world.

The men’s division for the Northern Hemisphere events will consist of a 24-man field, comprised of the Top 10 finishers of the 2016/2017 BWT season, 6 event wildcards, 3 BWT wildcards, 1 injury wildcard, and the Top 4 Surfline Overall Performance of the Year Award recipients. The 6 event wildcards for the Mavericks Challenge will be selected by a committee made up of Mavericks legends and experts.

Earlier this year, the 2017/2018 Big Wave Tour completed its first event of the season, the Puerto Escondido Challenge in Mexico, where Kai Lenny (HAW) claimed an exciting victory. Lenny leads the men’s BWT rankings with Jamie Mitchell (AUS) in second place, Tom Lowe (GBR) in third and Billy Kemper (HAW) in fourth. Mitchell, the 2016 and inaugural Nazaré Challenge winner, will look to defend his event title in Portugal. Kemper has dominated the Pe’ahi Challenge since its introduction to the WSL Big Wave Tour and will look for his third-consecutive win at Jaws.

WSL Big Wave Tour officials will monitor swell producing storms for the next four-and-a-half months and watch for the conditions that will produce waves in the 30-to-60-foot range. Once the call is made, competitors will have 72 hours notice to be ready to compete.

Mavericks Officially Confirmed for 2017/2018 WSL Big Wave Tour

HALF MOON BAY, California/USA (Monday, October 9, 2017) – The World Surf League (WSL) is pleased to announce an agreement with Titans of Mavericks and Cartel Management in which the world-famous Mavericks in Northern California will join WSL Big Wave Tour through 2021.

“We’re very pleased with this opportunity to work with the big wave community in bringing the Mavericks event to life on the international stage,” Sophie Goldschmidt, WSL CEO, said. “The League has always held a high amount of respect for the both venue and its community as one of the pillars of big wave surfing. The WSL intends to continue to run the Mavericks event and celebrate the stories of those who steward and surf it through the Big Wave Tour. This is a huge moment for both the organization and the sport of surfing.”

Surfing competitions have run under various structures at Mavericks since 1999, with Cartel overseeing the event starting in 2014 with the formation of Titans of Mavericks. The Titans of Mavericks event ran successfully in 2016, won by Nic Lamb (USA), and the company will continue to produce premium lifestyle goods and services as well as media content under the “Titans of Mavericks” brand.

“My primary vision in founding Titans of Mavericks was to allow these special athletes the platform and ability to have a successful career,” Griffin Guess, Titans of Mavericks Founder, said. “The event and brand I created generated a global audience for the event unlike anything before and I look forward to the WSL and their leadership continuing the success of the athletes, the event and the Maverick’s community at large.”

Formed in 2009, the Big Wave Tour joined the WSL in 2014, producing historic performances at never-before-contested venues such as Nazaré in Portugal and Pe’ahi on Maui’s North Shore. Monitoring swell systems and weather patterns throughout the season, the Big Wave Tour only runs events when surf reaches the 30-foot-plus mark, mobilizing on 72 hours’ notice with an international field of Big Wave men’s and women’s athletes.

“Every big wave surfer and fan on the planet knows that Mavericks holds a special place within this community,” Mike Parsons, WSL Big Wave Commissioner, said. “It’s one of the best big wave locations in the world and the opportunity to put it alongside Puerto Escondido, Nazaré and Pe’ahi is massive for the Big Wave Tour. After discussion with the athletes and the Senior Management team, including it in this year’s season was a no brainer. We’re all thrilled at the opportunity to run an event there.”

The world’s best female big surfers will also have the opportunity to compete this upcoming season at Mavericks. A relatively new dimension to big wave competition, Paige Alms (HAW) took home the inaugural women’s title last season following her impressive win at the Pe’ahi Challenge.

The 2017/2018 WSL Big Wave Tour has completed its first event of the season with Kai Lenny (HAW) winning the Puerto Escondido Challenge in Mexico. After discussion between Senior Management, the WSL Commissioner’s Office and BWT athletes, the WSL has decided to include Mavericks in the 2017/2018 season.

2017 Nelscott Reef Big Wave Event

LINCOLN CITY, Oregon, September 25th, 2017: The premier big wave event at Nelscott Reef returns for the 2017/2018 big wave season as a Pro/Am event, presented by 10 Barrel Brewing. The Nelscott Pro/Am will bring some of the best big wave surfers from around the world, along with local big names in the field to compete in a single day’s competition.

Organizers are excited about this year, as the event has once again opened the invite list to include amateurs as well as professionals. After an overwhelming response to an initial call for interest, organizers, Adam Wagner and Gabe Smith decided to open the field to both. “I was a little surprised how many people wanted to be included this year. I knew it was going to be a good event this year, but we doubled the amount of interest from last year in just the first 24 hours of making the announcement. We are super excited with the diversity of the invite list”, said Gabe Smith.

Nelscott Reef was also the first big wave event to include women, which helped pave the way for other big wave events to open their doors as well, including the World Surf League’s Big Wave Tour. The women will be invited back for the third time to compete at Nelscott Reef for 2017. “We are announcing the main invite list now for both the men and women. Due to the unprecedented interest in the event, we have decided to try something different with the alternates for this year.

10 Barrel Brewing’s 2017 Nelscott Reef Pro Am

We will be holding a random drawing for the 10 alternates during our opening ceremony, which we will announce in the next coming days. We feel this is the best way to accommodate the additional 35+ qualified surfers who expressed interest in a fair, unbiased, and competitive manner”, said Wagner.
In order to run the event, organizers are looking for 30’ or higher surf, with little to no wind and good visibility. Conditions like this are rare in the Pacific Northwest and only happen on a few days of the year, sometimes for just a few hours. The event operates on a traffic light system, waiting for the right combination of weather and swell.

Event Director, Adam Wagner, explains the system. “Red light means there is no potential swell in the near future. We will move to yellow if we see a developing system in the Pacific that looks like it will produce the right conditions. We will go to green with 72 hours notice to athletes and sponsors. We have a great team of forecasters, including our sponsor, Surfline, that have been running the event at Nelscott for the past 12 years and know the fickle characteristics of Oregon’s fall weather.” said Wagner.

The organizers take safety of the athletes very seriously, and have brought in Eric Akiskalian from Towsurfer.com to help lead the team. Eric brings 15 years of experience at Nelscott Reef and knows all of the unique and logistical challenges to this spot better than anyone.

“One of the biggest challenges we have is simply getting everyone out to the reef in a timely and safe manner. On big days, you just can’t paddle out thru the pounding beach break. You need a PWC assist, and even then, it takes a lot of jockeying around on a ski to punch through 20’ beach break.” said Akiskalian. “Once out there, we operate on a man on man basis, one ski for each surfer in the water. We have some of the best watermen in the world operating the skis, while constantly focusing on risk management and keeping everyone safe throughout the event.”

Nelscott Reef is the best big wave break in the Pacific Northwest, and it’s unique location 1/2 mile off the coast, makes it one of the most accessible. Athletes launch right from the beach and spectators can watch from the beach or on top of the cliffs in Lincoln City.

For 10 Barrel Brewing’s 2017 Nelscott Reef Pro Am those that can’t make it to Lincoln City on the day of the event, the team will be providing a live webcast.
For the latest information on the event, where to stay, etc., visit the event page at nelscottsurf.com. We are thankful to each of our sponsors, as they make this event possible. This years sponsors include;

Catalonia independence movement is the latest EU shock wave

They met cute, at a funeral. As they buried Spain’s last dictator 40 years ago, stoic Madrid and flirty Barcelona forgot their centuries-old feud and threw themselves into each other’s arms. That was then. The excitement of a democratic constitution granting Catalonia autonomy within Spain faded over the years, and the last decade’s brutal financial…

Big Wave World Tour Wipeout in Nazare | Think Bigger: Episode 1

The story starts here…

Pushing for an invite into a Big Wave World Tour event was lots of fun and was my goal for about 2 years. Being part of the 24 man international invitees at the first ever Nazare challenge left me feeling very proud and hungry to do well in the event.
Perhaps a bit too hungry. The heat didn’t start great for me. I like to steady the nerves and get off to a fast start catching a good wave within the first 5 minutes of a heat. This is how most good events start for competitors. From there on you build on that first score. Time went by during my heat and I hadn’t caught a good wave. Through frustration and adrenaline, I turned and went on a big ugly wave and took a heavy wipeout!
The result was 5 days in hospital, I suffered a Pneumothorax and nearly lost my left ear. Until you go you don’t know! Many lessons have been learnt from this incident. My love for the sport is at an all time high and i’m really looking forward to returning back to Nazare to tackle the monster at the end of this filming series. For now…Enjoy the breakdown of my Nazare challenge experience, plus watch a few completed waves from past big wave seasons surfing Nazare.

How To Ride the Motivation Wave and Overcome Distraction By, Daniel DiPiazza

For 20 years, filmmaker Sooyong Park has devoted his life to the study, recording and preservation of the wild Siberian tiger. 2-3 times a year, he leaves his family for months at a time to stay in the frozen forests of Eastern Russia, Manchuria and the Korean Peninsula in hopes of catching a glimpse of the great cats.

To withstand temperatures of -30*C, he builds himself an underground igloo, reinforced with sticks. To sustain himself, he packs hundreds of tiny rations of nuts and seeds in plastic wrap. When he’s thirsty, he drinks the snow.

Then, he takes out his camera and waits.

Sometimes days. Sometimes weeks. Sometimes months — waiting for the tigers to show up. And even when they do show up, he’s not allowed to show his excitement. He has to be absolutely focused in hopes of getting one, fleeting picture without scaring them away (or getting himself killed).

And because of Sooyong’s unconventional ability to focus on his work with tigers, the world has gotten some of the rarest footage ever captured of tiger behavior in the wild. Among his best finds, Park has captured some of the only footage of tigers giving birth in the wild, playing with each other at various ages, and doing other incredible things that nobody in the world has been able to record.

After watching a documentary about him, I immediately started thinking about what it must be like to focus on one thing so intensely for such a long period of time. It blew my mind.

Imagine being alone in that igloo, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. No updates on social, no contact, no toilet.

“Day 47, still waiting on tigers. Anyone else up? Lol!”

The funny thing is, it’s a GOOD thing he was so isolated out there.

Having contact with the outside world and constantly being wrapped up in the flow of daily gossip soundbites would have robbed him of the chance to actually focus on what he came there to see. And the same thing is happening to you and I every single day.

Focus in today’s world is harder than ever.

Unlike Sooyong Park, most of our jobs don’t require us to be out in nature for extended periods of time — so it’s much harder to escape the social media tractor beam. Most people can’t even complete a single task from beginning to end. It’s no surprise, really. Just take a look at your environment. The way that our culture and society is set up is not conducive itself to maintaining discipline or focus — partly because we’ve made ourselves increasingly available to outside intrusion

A few decades ago, there were just a handful of ways to contact each other: snail mail, home telephone or in person. That was it. Fast forward to today, and there is an almost infinite amount of ways to “check in” on somebody that you want to talk to.

On my phone alone I have:

  1. apple imessage app (for personal texts)
  2. Facebook messenger (for fb direct messages)
  3. Facebook app (for comments and updates)
  4. Twitter app
  5. Facebook Mentions (for fan page messages/updates)
  6. Whatsapp (international texts and calls)
  7. snapchat (for nudes??)
  8. Instagram (can receive DMs)
  9. Skype (for group calls and international video chat)
  10. GroupMe (I use it for social media interest groups)
  11. Kik (strictly for communicating with Instagram partners)
  12. Gmail (email)

That’s 12 different ways to get in touch with me at any given moment! (Not including making an actual phone call! That, my friends, is DESIGNED distraction.)

Everything in our lives is brilliantly designed to make us keep coming back for more..while getting less and less done. It’s almost impossible to avoid. This isn’t an excuse to fall into the Candy Crush oblivion and never return…but it’s just a fact. The technology you use every single day is designed to drain your focus and decrease your attention span.

I’ve said it before, but with so much distraction, uninterrupted focus is a rare superpower these days. One of my friends, also named Daniel, says it this way: “Give the greatest philosophers of ancient history Facebook and I’ll show you all the books they didn’t write.”

Developing focus by creating

Focus is a learned skill, and attention can be developed like a muscle. The more you focus on training this skill, the easier it becomes to “switch on.”

The most common response to lack of focus is attempting to use your will to overpower the distraction. Maybe you even delete annoying apps and pledge to only check your messages every fortnight. These ideas sound good…but we know they never end up working long term.
Eventually, you’ll have to use your apps. And you’re going to want to check your email. Being focused isn’t about cultivating greater willpower or hoping that the world goes back to a “simpler” time.

You’re most likely going to be on social media. This is just part of our new social ecosystem. Get over it. Most of us want to use these tools — so it’s not about eliminating them, it’s about learning how to adapt your lives to them. What you spend your time on is a result of what you do habitually. If you can change your habits, you can increase your ability to focus and change your entire life.

Learn to ride the “Motivation Wave” for as long as possible

Stanford professor B.J. Fogg really digs into the heart of our discussion today and delivers a framework to be productive according to the time of day.

He looks at motivation a bit differently than most. According to Fogg, motivation is a wave with peaks and valleys — and the goal isn’t to stay at a constant peak — but rather, to recognize the valleys and adjust your effort accordingly.

According to Fogg, it’s not realistic to expect focused attention from yourself at all times. Instead, the key is to become more aware of your daily (or even hourly) fluctuations in motivation — and do the hardest things in your day when you’re feeling the best.

For example, you might use this approach to “trick” yourself into working out every morning.
You know that when you get up in the morning and you’ve just had your first meal, your willpower is at the highest point it will be all day. You haven’t checked your email yet or jumped into the maelstrom that is social media.

If you hurry up and get to the gym, you can take full advantage of the natural motivation wave that hits you first thing in the morning — and if you ride it carefully, you can surf those feelings of optimism into the early afternoon by maintaining your energy until 12 or 1pm.

In anticipation of this wave, you’ll stack all your hardest work between 10am and 1pm. All the calls you don’t want to make. All the tedious emails you don’t want to answer and all the boring work you have to plow through. You need to do them when you’re at your peak state.

You already know that if you wait until you’re already feeling the afternoon dip to start force feeding yourself the most dreaded tasks, you’ll never get them done.

Do what you can when you’re feeling good, then purposely find easier things to do when your wave is dying down.

I’ve organized my day this way, which is why I wake up at 4:45am and give myself hours of undistracted time to get my hardest projects done before the rest of the world even wakes up!

I can easily say I’ve 10xed my productivity in the past 6 months alone since adopting this new routine.

Mizuno Wave Inspire 6 2E Width Running Shoe – Men’s

Mizuno Wave Inspire 6 2E Width Running Shoe – Men’s

The Mizuno Men’s Wave Inspire 6’s SmoothRide Engineered, Composite Double Fan Wave provides the perfect blend of support and cushioning in a package that transitions like no other. Mizuno Wave – Conventional midsoles use flat materials which allow deep penetration at the point of impact. The Mizuno Wave disperses impact forces uniformly over the length and width of the midsoles, providing unrivaled cushioning. The Mizuno Wave is a biomechanically engineered midsole technology that resists overpronation, thus relieving stress on ankle and knee joints. Mizuno’s unique Wave Technology minimizes excessive midsole collapse as the foot lands and rolls medially providing superior motion control. SmoothRide – SmoothRide Engineering is designed to minimize the rapid acceleration and deceleration of the foot through the phases of the running gait cycle by reducing shock vibration and increasing flexibility. This allows Mizuno to create running footwear that provides an extremely comfortable running experience through an even, smooth ride. VS-1 – VS-1 absorbs shock and enhances the cushioning properties by resisting compression-set, thus extending the cushioning life of the shoe. Thermoplastic elastomer positioned within the highest initial shock impact areas of the heel and forefoot facilitates excellent shock absorption while also providing an efficient and smooth toe off. AirMesh – Breathable and Cool, AIRMesh allows each running shoe from Mizuno to maintain a high standard of breathability for the life of the shoe and allows for the foot to stay cool. Dynamotion Fit – At heel strike most all shoes have a “gapping” that occurs when the heel hits the ground and deforms the midsole (but the upper around the heel counter doesn’t conform). This new feature will create an area of “give” in the heel collar/cradle that adapts for this. Gender Engineering – Gender Engineering from Mizuno adjusts to the fundamental differences between the running styles of men and women by creating shoes that more closely fit the different running styles of the male and female runner. AP Mid Sole – Acceleration Polymer Responsive Midsole; lightweight high rebound midsole material to give greater momentum at take-off Mizuno Intercool – Full-length midsole ventilation system reduces heat and humidity build-up inside the shoe. X10 – The most durable carbon rubber that allows for longer wear in high impact areas and supplements traction on heal strike Ortholite Foam – Custom foam formulations from Ortholite that combine the inherent features of strength, breathability, moisture transport, and anti-microbial function. Weight – 11.0 oz. Unless otherwise noted in the “Size_Color” drop down menu, all sizes are in U.S. sizing. Also, unless otherwise noted, men’s sizes are in standard “D” width and women’s sizes are in standard “B” width.
