Stormy Weather Threatens to Wreak Havoc With Boston Marathon

HOPKINTON, Mass. — Runners are trying to stay dry as they await the start of the 2019 Boston Marathon.

The 123nd running of the world’s oldest and most prestigious annual marathon got a wet start. But it’s not as cold as expected, with temperatures in the 60s as runners arrived instead of the 30s that were initially forecast.

Monday is the sixth anniversary of the deadly Boston Marathon bombings. It’s the first time the anniversary date falls on the same day as the marathon.

Runners are gathering underneath large tents set up outside of a high school in Hopkinton, Massachusetts.

Defending champions Des Linden and Yuki Kawauchi have said they’re not bothered by the forecast for a rainy, windy day because they won last year in similar conditions. They lead a field of about 30,000 runners on the 26.2-mile (42-kilometer) trek from Hopkinton to Copley Square.

The mobility impaired division is scheduled to begin at 9:02 a.m. EST.

How to Wear Spring Looks in Cold Weather

In Seattle, Spring weather is variable at best. There are some sunny and mild days, but generally things don’t warm up till May or June. It can snow in March, and perpetual rain and grey skies are guaranteed. In fact, Spring is colder than Autumn. And since the wet cold is worse than the dry cold, it feels chilly around here for a long, long time. This can put a damper on your Spring style.

I’ve learned to dress more Spring-like in Winter weather, despite the cold and wet. Of course, feel free to continue wearing dark, insulating and heavy Winter clothes and footwear when it’s cold in Spring if that’s your preference. No need to change up your look for the sake of a changing season unless it lifts your mood and you want the refresh.

The trick is to stay warm and covered in lighter, shinier and brighter colours, and crisper fabrications. Here are my favourite ways of achieving a toasty Spring look:

1. Lighten Neutrals

Switch to wearing lighter neutrals across all sorts of wardrobe items. Think shades of tan, white, pearl grey, bright, olive and taupe across items like outerwear, jackets, bottoms, knitwear, footwear, handbags, scarves and belts. Switch to denim in lighter washes of blue. If these neutrals are too light for your taste, throw in shades of cognac.

Wear weatherproof footwear in light neutrals. Sperry and Sorel make amazing weatherproof boots in cream and white. I have a pair of cream duck boots from Sperry and they’ve been sublime to wear in snowy Salt Lake City and Park City.

2. Brighten Outerwear, Knitwear & Bottoms

Brights, jewel tones, mid-tones, dusty mid-tones and pastels across a range of wardrobe items are fab to wear in Spring because they break up the monotony of wearing dark neutrals all Winter. Most of these colours look great with dark and light neutrals.

Wearing bright cashmere knitwear, wool coats, trench coats and bright bottoms makes sense in Seattle because we can wear them for a while. For example, I’m wearing the heck out of my new COS watermelon cashmere pullover and Boden tomato red jeans because they are perfect for a cold Spring day with white boots and outerwear. I’m wearing my tomato red, shocking pink, citron and cream wool coats a lot too.

3. Wear More Pattern and Pattern Mix

There’s something about wearing floral, gingham and bold striped patterns that make me feel like Spring is in the air, especially when I style them with brights and light neutrals. I also like to pattern mix with classic patterns.

4. Wear White Jeans

If you don’t wear white jeans in Winter, wear them in Spring. They magically make most items that you wear with them look crisp and fresh. Wear them with solid or pattered dark neutrals, brights, pastels, mid-tones, jewel tones and earth tones. Unless you’re wearing a dark neutral up top, lighten the footwear with white jeans.

5. Throw in Metallic Footwear

Metallic boots are amazing to wear on a cold Spring day when it’s not snowing, frosting or raining cats & dogs. Think silver, pewter, gold or rose gold boots, sneakers, loafers, oxfords or pumps. Adding high shine to an outfit makes it look interesting and glam.

6. Add Spring Scarves

Chunky woolly scarves look very Winter-y, so swap them out for silkier and cotton-rich versions. Wearing them in pastels, brights and light neutrals is an even better idea. They do wonders keeping out the chill and look chic too.

7. Layer under Crisp Blouses

On a milder Spring day, I like to break out a pretty long-sleeved floral blouse because I don’t wear blouses in Winter. I layer underneath them with camisoles or a thermal tee, and wear a Spring scarf and coat for extra insulation. It feels good to wear crisp woven fabric instead of knitwear.

8. Wear Nude-for-You Hosiery

I wear nude hose under Spring dresses and flared skirts with light-coloured booties or loafers Sometimes I layer nude hose under nude fishnets. I also wear nude knee-highs under cropped pants and jeans with sneakers, loafers, pumps and booties to give the illusion that my ankles are bare, but are secretly warmly insulated.

9. Lighten Lipstick & Refresh Your ‘Do

Change up the colour of your lipstick to something lighter, softer and less earthy, just for fun. Refresh the colour or style of your hair if you’re bored with your ‘do. Or head over to a Laura Mercier counter and refresh your make-up for the warm-weather season.

10. Rock a Fun Raincoat & Umbrella

Don’t underestimate the stylish effect of a fabulous raincoat and umbrella. Retailers are doing a much better job of making rainwear look chic and fun, and less like unattractive gear. Rocking rainwear lifts your spirits and chases away the blues. Throw in a pair of cheerful wellies too.

Turns out that I follow most of these style strategies in Winter, and not just in Spring because I LOVE Spring fashion. Over to you. Do you have cold and dismal weather in the Spring? How do you transition your look into Spring without freezing your buns off?

Places to visit this fall that have the best sweater weather

If you fancy traveling somewhere new this fall, but the idea of a cold skiing vacation or hot beach break doesn’t tickle your fancy, then maybe a cooler city with all year long sweater weather might be ideal for you. If you like cozy jumpers, boots, and jeans, then traveling somewhere where that’s your everyday outfit could be the perfect getaway. These are a few of the best places for you to visit this fall.

Portland, Maine

Portland is a beautiful peninsula full of beaches, lighthouses, and a perfect waterfront for fishing. There are plenty of attractions, restaurants, and things to do in Portland, as well as it having flawless sweater weather. The average fall temperature in Portland is in the low-30s, making it ideal if you fancy a getaway where you can live in sweaters, jumpers, and scarves.

Sa Pa, Vietnam

If you fancy somewhere slightly more exotic and further from home, Sa Pa grants the perfect weather for your fall vacation. Although, if sweater weather is your favorite kind of climate, you might want to visit Sa Pa in any season. With the highest temperatures of the year averaging at about 67°F in July, and the lowest being 48°F in January, it’s practically jumper and scarf weather all year round. It’s not just the climate that makes Sa Pa ideal, however. The town is one of the central market locations in the area and boasts incredible mountain views, trekking opportunities, and an exploration of traditional Vietnamese culture.

Salt Lake City, Utah

The capital city of Utah is one of the most picturesque cities in the United States. With a climate which averages at about 50°F in the fall, it’s the perfect place to bust out all of your favorite sweaters. It has a number of parks, including Liberty Park which spans over 100 acres, with a lake that has two islands in the middle of it. It is also home to a variety of bird species, making it perfect for nature lovers. Salt Lake City is also has a wide range of cultural and artistic attractions, such as museums, art galleries, music festivals, and conventions.

Kundasang, Malaysia

In the east of Malaysia resides a small resort town called Kundasang. Though the area has little in the way of attractions, it could be the perfect place for a lazy vacation. The temperate weather sticks at around 68°F, with temperatures not deviating much from 61°F to 75°F all year. There’s a World War II memorial and plenty of fresh vegetables, and also allows for a stunning view of Mount Kinabalu, not to mention the iconic cabbage roundabout, which is worth traveling to Malaysia for in itself!

There are plenty of places around the world which have chilly fall temperatures which are too cold for t-shirts but too warm for coats. Most of these reside in the United States, but if you fancy traveling further afield, many parts of Asia also have all year long sweater weather. It’s not just fall you have to limit your sweater wearing to!

Packing for the Weather: Travel Fun

When traveling, what are your rules for clothing based on weather?

So here’s a fun question for today: When traveling, what are your rules for clothing based on weather? If you’re packing for a trip and hear that temperatures are expected to be in the low 70s, what does that mean for you? Do you have hard cutoff temperatures for things like sandals, tights, hats and gloves, and more? If you’re traveling for business, where is the pantyhose/tights/bare-leg temperature cut off, or open-toe versus closed-toe rule? Have you found any amazing pieces (scarves or cardigans, for example) that are so lightweight and effective across a wide spectrum that you ALWAYS pack them?

To back up a bit: Earlier this week, my husband and I took a “long date”/mini-vacation to New Orleans*. Before we went, I was totally flummoxed looking at the weather. 60s during Sunday evening. Raining but in the high 70s on Monday. Then in the 40s or 50s on Tuesday when we left. Soooooo… what does one pack for weather like that? I kept remembering a trip I took to Germany years ago, where the forecast had said 70s, so I happily packed dresses and sandals and was FREEZING the entire time. I wound up buying some great jackets on that trip! (I also bought sneakers because my feet were cold!) For NOLA, my guesses were mostly correct (lots of layers!) with the exception of Monday morning before the rain started, when it was high 70s and super humid. We were walking around Tulane’s campus, where my husband went for undergrad, and I kept passing girls wearing dresses with sandals and feeling Super Frump Tourist with my tall rainboots and hooded rain jacket, and sweltering in my ripped skinny jeans and t-shirt. Once it started to rain and the humidity broke, I was much more comfortable!

So let’s hear from you, ladies: When traveling, what are your rules for clothing based on weather? What do you always pack when there will be a wide range of weather fluctuations?

* Before anyone asks: yes, NOLA was amazing! I combed through reader comments before I went, and based on a lot of those we stayed at the Hotel Mazarin (lovely!), ate at Commander’s Palace (OMG — I expected it to be romantic and fancy but not necessarily great food, but it was probably one of the best meals I’ve had in my life!), and wandered the French Quarter and Tulane’s campus, and also made stops to Domilise’s for po’ boys and Tipitinas (which is a music venue, but we went midday because my husband needed a new hat to replace his decrepit one from his college years). We also tried to make reservations at Galatois (fail) and Meril (which closed at the last minute due to some technical problem, but was just as well because we totally ate and drank too much just wandering around the French Quarter). Great visit in the limited time we had.

Also, Game of Thrones fans will find some of their favorite locations from the series, such as king’s landing and its surroundings.

Hallstatt

Hallstatt in Austria is a sight for sore eyes. One look at this small lakeside village and you’ll believe in magic.
