White African American History & Culture Museum Hip-Hop Exhibit Curator Sparks Twitter Debate

Twitter is ablaze with an ongoing debate about how Hip-Hop should be presented at the National African American History and Culture Museum, and by whom. Timothy Anne Burnside, a cultural historian and museum specialist with the Smithsonian, happens to be a white woman, and a question raised by a Twitter user has morphed into varying strands of opinions.

Twitter user @DJChubbESwagg caught wind of the fact that Burnside has been the curator of the museum’s ongoing Hip-Hop exhibit. On Thursday, he wrote, “THERE IS A WHITE WOMAN CURATING THE HIP HOP PART OF THE NMAAHC SMITHSONIAN?!?!?!?!?!?!? WHO LET THIS SH*T HAPPEN!?!?!”

From there, many of Burnside’s compatriots and colleagues have come to her defense despite getting a strong co-sign from Public Enemy’s Chuck D earlier this year when the exhibit was announced to the public. In @DJChubbESwag’s question, he pondered openly how Burnside became the best point person for such an exhibit, and he took on heavy criticism for his initial salvo.

From there, others began to chime in from all sides of the debate, largely supporting Burnside as a qualified figure for this venture

“that’s a wild thing to say. This is a museum created specifically to highlight Black people and our experience in America and you’re talking about diversity? Really? We crave inclusion and acceptance that much? God bless,” @StefIsDope wrote.

In contrast, Twitter user @_viciwill writes, “[N]o one said Timothy Anne wasn’t qualified to do this role. that’s not even what was up for discussion. the discussion was “were there no Black people who could have filled this role?” which is a valid question to ask about the curators of the Blackest museum in the US.”

A fair point that has been contended by some of Black Twitter’s more visible voices who supported Burnside, and bandied about by some who feel the point of @DJChubbESwagg’s question was missed overall.

“I don’t know the white woman curating the hip hop section in the NMAAHC, but I hear she is knowledgeable, respected, and an ally. But question is, wouldn’t a true ally feel it’s not their place to take a role such as that? As a straight male, I wouldn’t curate an LGBTQ exhibit,” @FredTJoseph wrote.

For context, Burnside has been collecting Hip-Hop related artifacts for the museum and the exhibit for years, including the late J Dilla’s MPC machine among other items since 2006.

She has built strong relationships in the music community and abroad and has been noted as someone who respects Black music and culture without centering herself in the work. She has remained relatively silent on the matter, while a quick look on @DJChubbESwagg’s page proves that the debate is still onging and “NMAAHC” is now trending on Twitter.

What are your thoughts? Is this debate worthy tackling? Sound off in the comments.

Outfit Formula: Black & White with High-Rise Skinnies

High rises look the most current at the moment, and that’s what I’m highlighting in this outfit formula. Fully tucking or semi-tucking into a high waist is the trendiest way to go, because showcasing the length of the high rise is the point. You can wear a roomy cropped top to showcase most of the high rise if tucking is not your thing.

Please try to keep an open mind if you’re not a tucker or semi-tucker. You do NOT need to have flat abs and a toned midsection to rock this look. You also don’t need to wear a belt. The high rise on this type of jean is girdling in itself, and supports the midsection more gracefully than you might expect. It’s quite comfortable too. And if that doesn’t convince you, shapewear is an option because it’s a LOT more comfortable these days. You can’t feel the compression, and the visual effect is stellar. Don’t rule it out until you’ve given the look a fair chance.

The tops are best in a fluid fit if you want to conceal the midsection above the waist.

For those who are very short in the waist, you can achieve a similar look with mid-rise jeans, or wearing a roomy cropped top, like I mentioned up top.

The outfit formula is very casual, and in black & white it looks graphic and is easy to pull together. You can make the vibe as hard-edged as you like. You can substitute the black for dark blue, and wear high-rise black pants instead of jeans.

1. Double Denim

Combine a pair of high-rise black skinny jeans with a fluid white tee, sweater or turtleneck, and top it off with a black, grey or blue denim jacket. Tuck or fully tuck the white top to showcase the high rise. Add heels to dress it up, or throw in some white sneakers.

Everlane The Denim Jacket

2. Elegantly Dusted

Combine high-rise black skinnies with a fluid tucked or semi-tucked white top, and throw over a dramatic duster in the same palette. The duster does a marvelous job of camouflaging the outside contour of the body, while drawing attention to the waist. This might be the way you ease into tucking into a high waist. Finish off the look with footwear that works with the outfit.

Eloquii Flocked Dot Skinny Jean

3. Columned & White

Create a column of black with a fluid black tee or top and high-rise black skinnies. A patterned top adds some visual interest. Semi or fully tuck the top. Finish off the look with a white topper and black or white booties.

Hudson Barbara High Waist Skinny Jeans

4. Pretty Windowpane

This is my favourite of the four because it looks the prettiest and dressiest. Combine high-rise black skinnies with a fully or semi-tucked white tee or top. A panel print is a nice touch. Top it off with a black windowpane blazer or regular black blazer. A longer length blazer is the trendiest version at the moment. Finish off the look with casual or smart casual white footwear that picks up the white in the top. Add jewelley, eyewear, headgear and watch as desired.

Paige Transcend Hoxton Ankle Jeans

I bought an unplanned pair of black high-rise skinnies from Madewell as an emergency purchase this Spring, and I love them. I enjoy tucking and semi-tucking into them, and wearing them with dainty white shoes like my flat loafers for Spring. For early Fall, I’m going to wear them with my boots and sneakers, a white belt (maybe), an assortment of white and black tops, and ink blue toppers since I don’t have black. I might throw in a stripe, a very light blue denim jacket, and my light blue bag. Here are the exact items from my wardrobe that create the outfits.

FASHION DEAL UPDATE:

First Black Female White House Reporter to be honored with Life-Sized Statue in D.C.

A life-sized bronze statue is underway for Alice Allison Dunnigan, the first African American woman to receive press credentials to cover the White House. The sculpture is scheduled to be unveiled next month at the Newseum, an interactive museum based in Washington, D.C. that celebrates news history and is dedicated to underscoring the importance of a free press and the First Amendment.

Dunnigan, who began her journalism career in Kentucky before moving to Washington, D.C., was a pioneering journalist who rose to the top of her profession despite racist policies that segregated black journalists and sexist attitudes that severely limited opportunities for women in a male-dominated workplace, reads a press release.

Dunnigan was born in 1906 as the daughter of a sharecropper and a domestic worker. As a child, she dreamed of traveling around the world and reporting on her experiences as a newspaper writer. She landed her first writing gig at just 13 years old at a local newspaper where she wrote one-sentence news items.

Her career trajectory shifted when she became older. She completed a college teaching course at what is now Kentucky State University and went on to work as a public school teacher in Kentucky from 1924 to 1942. However, in search of a better paying job, she relocated to Washington, D.C. in 1942 and began working as a federal government employee while taking night courses at Howard University.

In 1946, she was offered a job as a Washington correspondent writing for the Chicago Defender, a black-owned weekly publication that paid her substantially less than her male counterparts. She supplemented her income with other writing gigs, including the Associated Negro Press, where she was eventually named as the outlet’s Washington Bureau chief.

In 1948, she became the first African American female White House correspondent, covering presidential press conferences. She was also granted press credentials to cover Congress, the Supreme Court, and the State Department. That same year, she became the first African American woman on a presidential tour and the only black reporter to cover President Harry S. Truman’s famous whistle-stop train tour.

During her career in journalism, Dunnigan developed a reputation as a hardline reporter, who asked tough questions about racial and gender equality, all while enduring a great deal of discrimination, herself. She was barred from white-only establishments to cover President Eisenhower and forced to sit with the servants to cover Sen. Robert A. Taft’s funeral. “Race and sex were twin strikes against me. I’m not sure which was the hardest to break down,” she once stated, according to the press release.

Nevertheless, she persisted as a journalist until 1960, when she was appointed to a position on Lyndon B. Johnson’s presidential campaign and later as an education consultant of the Presidential Committee on Equal Employment Opportunity. She continued to work in other high-level political and government roles up until the election of President Richard Nixon.

Following her stint at the White House, Dunnigan wrote an autobiography titled A Black Woman’s Experience: From Schoolhouse to White House, which was published in 1974. She died in 1983 at the age of 77.

Dunnigan’s monument is being created by Kentucky-based sculptor Amanda Matthews. It will be displayed at the Newseum from Sept. 21 through Dec. 16 and then moved to Dunnigan’s home state at the West Kentucky African American Heritage Center.

Bold Moves to End Sexual Violence: Challenging White Supremacy in Prevention

Ms. is a proud media sponsor of the 2018 National Sexual Assault Conference, co-hosted by the California Coalition Against Sexual Assault, the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape and the National Sexual Violence Resource Center. This year’s NSAC theme is “Bold Moves: Ending Sexual Violence in One Generation.” In this series, NSAC presenters and major speakers are expanding on conference conversations and laying out bold moves all of us can take. Click the banner image above or this link for more Bold Moves posts.

If we truly aim to end sexual violence in one generation, we will never be successful without tearing down all forms of oppression. This year’s National Sexual Assault Conference (NSAC) provides us the opportunity to do just that. In community, we are having transformative conversations about bringing margin to center in our prevention efforts—and building our capacity as co-conspirators in the movement to end racism.

In their Statement on Charlottesville, the National Task Force to End Sexual & Domestic Violence asserted that “the quest to end domestic violence and sexual assault is inextricably linked with the quest to end racism, homophobia, transphobia, misogyny, xenophobia, religious bigotry toward Jewish and Muslim communities and other forms of oppression toward marginalized communities, including immigrant and Native American communities.” Echoing this call to action, the National Alliance to End Sexual Violence urged us to “take responsibility within our own ranks” and “to work actively to end racism.”

Leaders ranging from Kimberle Crenshaw and Black Women’s Blueprint, Inc., to Move to End Violence and previous Know Your IX Executive Director Mahroh Jahangiri have called on us to interrogate our centralization of whiteness, our manipulation of the “oppression olympics” and the other systems of oppression we have upheld in the name of ending violence and supporting survivors.

But in order to rise to this call, activists like you and me must equip ourselves to recognize, intervene and repair the harms that we have caused—and continue to cause—in our organizing and organizational structures.

The characteristics of white supremacy, as outlined by Tema Okun and Kenneth Jones, are pervasive and frequently wedged amongst good intentions. Navigating how these characteristics show up in our team dynamics, program design, coalition building and leadership development is vital to building inclusive, safer and, ultimately, more effective social justice movements. If we want to better serve those who are inordinately impacted by abuse, and center their voices in the movement to end violence, we must collectively assess how we engage and support these communities from conceptualization to evaluation. To truly achieve liberation, we must interrogate how we do this work—and what power structures we are upholding in our efforts to create change.

We know that women of color are at a disproportionate risk of experiencing multiple forms of violence, with particular threats related to sexual, domestic and dating violence. Nearly half (45.6 percent) of American Indian/Alaska Native women, more than one in three (35.5 percent) non-Hispanic Black women, more than one in four (26.9 percent) Hispanic women and more than one in five (22.9 percent) Asian/Pacific Islander women have report experiencing some form of contact-related sexual violence, and transgender people of color who are survivors of hate violence are nearly twice as likely to experience sexual violence as their white counterparts. What is even more heartbreaking is that if you ask any sexual violence prevention educator or advocate, we will tell you that in reality, the numbers are even higher than the research tells us.

These numbers alone should be enough cause to interrogate white supremacy culture’s role in the occurrence of, and our response to, sexual violence. But our work doesn’t end there. These notions of superiority as normalized values, practices and promotions are not new—white supremacy has always been strongly rooted in our social and political systems. Our sudden collective realization of this fact in the U.S. is only further proof that we still have much work to do.

Unfortunately, for those of us who are outspoken in our opposition to white supremacy, its characteristics are still rooted in our everyday lives and work. The subtly institutionalized ways that we reinforce this ideology are no less pervasive or problematic than the mechanisms of those who have built their careers on the mantle of hate. As my NSAC co-presenter Carly Manes asserts: “The call is to spend our energy on transforming our cultural and personal habits that allow racism to thrive.”

Now more than ever, we must examine how we are both consciously and unconsciously reifying a white supremacist culture. We must recognize and unlearn the behaviors that got us to this point.

In order to do the difficult work of unlearning these characteristics, white people must take it upon themselves to learn how these habits show up in our work and craft accountability structures. How do we as as educators perpetuate white supremacy in our program design, implementation and evaluation? In what ways are our programmatic and service structures rooted in whiteness? Moving forward, it is essential that the responsibility for these assessments not be shouldered on people of color, while simultaneously holding great respect for those who find passion in helping us along this journey.

To be clear, this conversation includes me. The deeper I dive into analysis, the more I become painfully aware of the the ways I have replicated damaging social norms and patterns—in my personal life, at work and even in my support of developing leaders. I’ve been blessed to have a community of friends willing to have difficult yet necessary conversations with me. They’ve taught me that this work requires vulnerability, that it gets messy and uncomfortable and that this work started much earlier than my existence—and will continue on far after.

Today at NSAC, we will build on the thought leadership of intersectional movement makers to catalyze a space of vested individuals hungry to disrupt the ways in which white supremacy culture manifests in our sexual violence prevention efforts. By crafting a space where attendees can transparently navigate how this toxic culture has been internalized both personally and professionally, we aim to ignite a conversation that will carry beyond NSAC to create lasting change.

Won’t you join us?

Sarah Colomé is the Director of the Women’s Resources Center at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and a presenter at the 2018 National Sexual Assault Conference. White House Counsel Don McGahn to Leave After Kavanaugh Vote, Trump Says

White House Counsel Don McGahn will leave his job after the Senate votes on the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court, President Donald Trump said in a tweet.

The development comes as legal risks to the president rise, following the conviction of his former campaign chairman Paul Manafort last week on fraud charges and his former personal lawyer Michael Cohen’s guilty plea to charges of fraud and campaign finance violations.

McGahn “will be leaving his position in the fall, shortly after the confirmation (hopefully) of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the United States Supreme Court,” Trump said Wednesday. “I have worked with Don for a long time and truly appreciate his service!”

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump White House Counsel Don McGahn will be leaving his position in the fall, shortly after the confirmation (hopefully) of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the United States Supreme Court. I have worked with Don for a long time and truly appreciate his service!

During his time as White House counsel, McGahn repeatedly butted heads with Trump and occupied a position rife with conflicts. He has met extensively with Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team in its investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election, and is an important potential witness regarding whether Trump obstructed justice when he fired FBI Director James Comey.

Because he’s a witness in the Russia investigation, McGahn has had little involvement in the White House’s response to the probe since at least August 2017, when lawyer Ty Cobb was brought into the West Wing to work directly with investigators. Lawyer Emmet Flood replaced Cobb earlier this year and could move into McGahn’s job.

Flood is well respected within the White House but no decision has been made on McGahn’s replacement, according to one administration official who asked not to be identified discussing a personnel matter.

McGahn also came under fire earlier this year for his office’s handling of a security clearance for former White House Staff Secretary Rob Porter, who was accused of domestic abuse by two ex-wives.

A New Low: White House Raises Flag Before John McCain Is Laid to Rest

Reuters / Brian Snyder

The flag at the White House was raised back to full-staff Monday morning, just hours after it had been briefly lowered to recognize the death of Republican senator and former presidential candidate John McCain.

The move breaks with a tradition that has normally seen sitting senators who die in office have flags officially lowered until burial—and again lays bare the lack of sympathy Trump showed throughout the Arizona Republican’s public battle with brain cancer and particularly in the wake of his death at age 81 on Saturday.

The flag remains at half-staff at other government sites across Washington, including at the Capitol and at the Washington Monument.

Hugo Boss Updates Michael Jackson’s White ‘Thriller’ Suit For His 60th B’day [Video]

Hugo Boss is celebrating what would be Michael Jackson’s 60th birthday this month by bringing back the white suit it designed for the cover of his 1982 iconic album, Thriller.

The updated work, part of the new Boss x Michael Jackson collection, is made from lightweight twill with a three-button cuff jacket in a slightly slimmer fit than the King of Pop’s version, worn in the height of the over-sized 1980s, notes The Hollywood Reporter.

The collection also includes three unisex tees, all of which will be released in Boss stores worldwide on the singer’s birthday, August 29.

One washed cotton jersey tee by Graham Dolphin features the Thriller album cover alongside messages from Jackson’s fans; another design shows a silhouette of his signature dance pose.

White House Uses White Woman’s Murder to Whip Up Anti-Immigrant Sentiment

Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation

Twenty-four hours after an accused murderer led police to the body of a slain college student Mollie Tibbetts in an Iowa cornfield, the Trump administration is using her death to whip up anti-immigrant sentiment—even saying her family has been “permanently separated.”

The White House claimed its hardline immigration policies would have prevented the murder, with Press Secretary Sarah Sanders calling Tibbetts’ death “an unfortunate reminder of why we need to strengthen our immigration laws.” The alleged killer’s lawyer that his client was working in the United States legally.

But regardless of the actual legal status of Tibbetts’ accused killer, advocates for Iowa’s 150,000 immigrants are concerned about the White House’s rhetoric.

Cop Allegedly Says He Has His Gun Pulled ‘Because You’re Not White’ [Video]

Video footage of a Milwaukee traffic stop has gone viral after it appears to show a sheriff’s deputy telling a driver that guns were drawn on him because he was “not white.”

Milwaukee County Sheriff’s deputies reportedly pulled over a driver they said was going 85 mph and blew through a stop sign late Sunday afternoon. TMJ4 reports that acting Milwaukee Sheriff Rick Schmidt said his deputies drew their guns because the 26-year-old driver and his 16-year-old passenger were not following commands.

Schmidt responded Sunday night. During a 9 p.m. news conference, Schmidt said the “recorded racial comment” was not made by a deputy, but came from a person on scene. He said the squad dashcam video corroborates that his deputies did not say the comment, reports Fox 6.

Watch the video for yourself, and let us know what you think in the comments.

Donald Trump Once Considered Pitting Black Against White On ‘The Apprentice’

Donald Trump’s questionable history with racism just added another chapter. After denying having used the N-word on The Apprentice, an old Howard Stern interview features Trump talking about pitting black contestants against white contestants on the show. How has Trump responded to his past racist comments?

Trump has denied ever using the N-word on The Apprentice. The White House Press Secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, however, says that she is not positive that there is not a tape of Trump saying the word. Such a tape has not surfaced, but Trump’s interview with Stern certainly didn’t help the situation.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Trump discussed the racially charged idea during an interview with Stern in 2005. Trump told the radio host that somebody on The Apprentice thought it would be interesting to see nine black people compete with nine whites on the show. Trump was all for the idea because he thought he would handle it without being racially insensitive.

“And it would be nine blacks against nine white, all highly educated, very smart, strong, beautiful people, right?” Trump told Stern.

Stern’s co-host, Robin Quivers, quickly pointed out that Trump would probably “have a riot” if he went through with the idea. In response, Trump told her that it would be a ratings magnet and probably make The Apprentice the most viewed show on TV. Trump and Stern then talked about the skin tone of the people that would make up both sides of the competition.

Trump has not responded to the reports surrounding his interview with Stern. He did tweet about the N-word rumors and assured everyone that a tape of him saying the racial slur does not exist. Rumors of Trump saying the N-word gained ground after the release of Omarosa Manigault Newman’s new book, Unhinged.

In the memoir, Newman discussed her time working as a staffer for Trump and revealed that he used the N-word on multiple occasions. Newman never heard Trump say it, but several sources confirmed to her that he did.

In light of the reports, actor and comedian Tom Arnold has officially gone on the hunt for the missing tapes. Arnold has been an acquaintance with Donald Trump for the past 30 years and filmed his journey to find the controversial recording, called The Hunt for the Trump Tapes With Tom Arnold. Arnold is confident that the tape exists, though nobody has released anything to confirm.

Spike Lee: ‘BlacKKKlansman Should Be Shown in the White House’ [Video]

If it was up to legendary filmmaker Spike Lee, BlacKkKlansman, his latest film to date, would be screened in Donald Trump’s executive mansion.

The new film takes place in the 1970s and is based on the real-life experiences of Ron Stallworth, the first African American detective to join the Colorado Springs police force. In addition to facing a number of racial barriers, Stallworth managed to infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan as an undercover and befriend former KKK Grand Wizard David Duke through a series of phone conversations. To complete the operation, Stallworth worked with his partner, a Jewish cop played by Adam Driver in the movie, who pretends to be him at KKK meetings.

Like many Spike Lee joints, the overarching theme of BlacKkKlansman underscores the prevalence of racism and the ongoing fight for racial equality. It opens with scenes from Birth of A Nation, a notorious silent picture released in 1915 that glorified the Klan and demonized black men. The controversial drama has been deemed a classic American film and was even screened for then-President Woodrow Wilson along with members of Congress and the Supreme Court.

Birth of a Nation was shown in the White House. Woodrow Wilson saw it and he said it was like ‘writing history with lightning,’” Lee told Black Enterprise. “I think BlacKkKlansman should be shown in the White House—and make sure you put Jeff Sessions in the front row because there are certain things that people are wearing [in the film] that he might be in possession of!” Lee joked, apparently making a reference to the robes worn by Klansmen.

Telling A Part of History

The context of the movie is so surreal that Lee admitted that he had a hard time believing it was true, himself. In fact, when BlacKkKlansman producer Jordan Peele told him about the story, Lee initially thought about Dave Chappelle’s popular black KKK member sketch. Nonetheless, he pounced on the opportunity to create a film about a remarkable piece of American history that few Americans know about.

To tell the story, Lee cast John David Washington, the son of Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington, for the lead role as Stallworth. “I just knew he could do it. I just offered him the part. He didn’t have to do a read for it. He didn’t have to do a tape [or] audition,” said the movie director. “I know talent when I see it. Many people have got their first roles in my films over the last 30 years,” he said, noting Halle Berry and Rosie Perez.

Washington, who graduated from an HBCU, says that he, too, was surprised when Lee told him about Stallworth’s story. “I went to Morehouse, class of ’06, so I learned a lot about my culture and our history [but] this one kind of slipped through the cracks,” he said.

The 32-year-old actor added that working on the film changed his perspective about police, especially those of color, and he hopes it will change how they are viewed by society as well. “I had no idea what it was like to be an African American cop and I’m hoping people will get the chance to see what it’s like with this film,” said the star of HBO’s Ballers. “We need to start celebrating more men and women that look like us that are police and are doing their job correctly. It’s a thankless job.” When asked if he felt anxious or excited for his father to see the movie, he cooly responded, “I hope he likes it.”

“Wake Up!”

BlacKkKlansman takes several jabs at President Trump and ends with a powerful scene that suggests that race relations in the U.S. are getting worse. It also includes a handful of scenes with the words “wake up,” a signature expression in Lee’s work.

“My most famous phrase for all my films is ‘wake up.’ School Days—that film came out in 1988—ends with Laurence Fishburne saying ‘wake up.’  Do the Right Thing (1989) begins with Samuel L. Jackson saying ‘wake up,’” he proclaimed. The term “woke—that’s that new sh-t. We were saying ‘wake up’ in ’88!”

BlacKkKlansman will be released in theaters Aug. 10, 2018.

Omarosa To Release ‘Unhinged’ Tell-All About Trump White House

If you’ve been hoping for Omarosa to spill the tea about her time in Trump’s White House… the wait is over, as the exiled former aide to 45 has bagged a seven-figure book deal with a division of Simon & Schuster, Gallery Books.

The reality-tv star is expected to dish about her time in the White House and her relationship with Donald Trump. The Daily Mail reports that the book promises to deliver the juiciest insider scoop about Trump and his administration.

Sources tell DailyMail.com that Omarosa has been a bit  ‘downhearted’ dealing with the aftermath of being exiled by the man who she once called her friend.

The book is expected to be published next month.

Once she was gone from the White House, Trump cut her off completely. He never tweeted about her or said a bad thing like he’s done to others; but he ceased all correspondences with her,” the insider claimed.

Omarosa went on to star in Celebrity Big Brother but has since struggled to book speaking gigs or appearances. She waited to secure the best publishing deal.

“She was smart to drop nuggets of information while on Celebrity Big Brother to get people tantalized. That certainly helped in her finally getting the best publishing,” the source said.

“She knew that Celebrity Big Brother might make or break for her landing a book deal and she maximized that moment.”

Omarosa, who served as director of communications for the Office of Public Liaison, was allegedly fired last December following reports of an altercation with Chief of Staff John Kelly.

On Wednesday it was reported that she has been interviewed by federal investigators in the Trump-Cohen probe.

Black, White, and Belonging: My Brush With Curlfest

Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast

As a little girl, my hair salon was the living room floor. I would sit in front of my mother as she listed my options—ponytails, braids, half-up/half-down. All were relatively easy, but none were painless as I sat tearfully while a standard hairbrush ripped through the knots in my curly hair.

Being mixed was a fact of my life, but not something that I considered notable. People asked me all the time what race I was, and I’d tell them and think nothing more of it. My hair was thick and curly because my dad was black. But it wasn’t “black hair” because my mom was white.

My curly hair looked like a dream to friends and passersby but was a nightmare to live with it due to the lack of mainstream products and education for my thick locks. No one in my family knew how to take care of mixed hair in the ’90s.

An Unhinged Roseanne On Valerie Tweet: ‘I Thought The B***h Was White!’ [Video]

It’s almost as if she likes stepping in doo-doo … on purpose! We’re referring to Roseanne Barr who, for some unknown reason, won’t just leave well enough alone regarding the situation she put herself in when she sent out a racist tweet about former Barack Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett in May.

As a result of her stupid stunt ABC TV fired Barr from her own show and cancelled it after she tweeted a meme comparing Jarrett to a character from The Planet of the Apes.

Even though Roseanne won’t be on the show, it has been revived as The Conners with TV daughter Sara Gilbert as the star of the new series.

In a new video posted on YouTube on Thursday, an agitated, cigarette smoking Roseanne appeared straight up unhinged as she screamed that she thought Jarrett was a white woman.

According to PEOPLE, the clip is an excerpt from a longer interview.

In the clip, an interviewer presses Roseanne to explain her tweet about Jarrett.

“I’m trying to talk about Iran!” Barr insists. “I’m trying to talk about … Valerie Jarrett wrote the Iran deal! That’s what my tweet was about!”

“I know,” the interviewer replied. “You’ve explained this 300 times.”

Then an agitated Roseanne screams:

“I thought the bitch was white! Goddamnit! I thought the bitch was white! F*ck!”

Well, this was a switch up from previous statements from Barr about that that now infamous tweet. Previously, she appeared repentant, claiming that she didn’t know Jarrett is black and that she was on Ambien while tweeting.

Barr also defended herself from accusations of racism.

“I’m not a racist, I never was & I never will be,” she tweeted in May. “One stupid joke in a lifetime of fighting 4 civil rights 4 all minorities, against networks, studios, at the expense of my nervous system/family/wealth will NEVER b taken from me.”

She also said …

“I definitely feel remorse,” she continued. “I’ve lost everything. And I regretted it before I lost everything.”

Barr has since said she “won’t be doing any TV interviews” and will instead be filming and posting videos to her YouTube channel.

We think she needs to just shut up. Period. And stop looking for doo-doo to step in.

Bryan Cranston Used to Pull the Most Walter White Prank on Aaron Paul During Breaking Bad

Not only did Aaron Paul dress his baby daughter up in a mini hazmat suit for Breaking Bad‘s 10th-anniversary panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, but he also regaled fans with a hilarious behind-the-scenes story from the award-winning drama.

After explaining that showrunner Vince Gilligan had told him that the writers originally planned to kill off Jesse at the end of season one, Paul revealed that co-star Bryan Cranston frequently used this information to convince him his character was done for.

“He came up to me the first time he did it and just gives me a really long, exaggerated hug. He’s just not letting me go [and I’m like], ‘What’s going on?’” Paul said. “He’s like, ‘Hey, man, it’s been a fun ride.’ I was like, ‘What do you mean?’ He’s like, ‘I thought you read the script, right?’ [I was like,] ‘No.’ He’s like, ‘Oh,’ and then he just walks away. And I run into the production office, and I’m like, ‘Where’s the script?!’ And they’re like, ‘It’s not available yet,’ and I’m like, ‘Please, god, tell me.’ And then I read it and I was alive still.”

Does Nene Leakes Want To Look White?

NeNe Leakes claims it was meant to be a light-hearted joke about Eurocentric beauty but it sparked furor among her followers in the comments section on her Instagram page this week.

“Thank you @fabfacesmua for keeping me looking like a white woman whenever I’m in the Bahamas I wish you much success #bahamamomma #thesepeoplecrazy #lovebeingabrowngirl #lifeofnene,” the ‘RHOA‘ star said on July 9 in the caption of a selfie taken on the Caribbean island.

While many were outraged over the comment, NeNe’s defenders noted that the message was punctuated with a sarcastic rolling eye emoji. Still — several fans slammed Leakes for altering her appearance to distance herself from blackness (nose job, blonde hair).

Peep the controversial photo below.

Fan reaction was mixed.

“F— looking like a white woman! You look like your own damn self! BLACK BLONDE & BEAUTIFUL AF! Lol.” wrote one fan.

“Denying your blackness is a sad thing,” said another.

But many questioned: “Are you really trying to look white?”

Leakes backed up two commenters who explained that she was only kidding about “looking like a white woman.”

“There are two types of people in this world….1) Those that speak and understand sarcasm. 2) Idiots!” “@brandisjudge” NeNe said in response.

One fan replied to her: “@neneleakes everybody so damn sensitive these days. It’s like there [sic] waiting on you to say something they don’t agree with so they can throw u under the bus. Anyway, where Gregg at? Tell him to honk the horn on they ass.“

“@flynerd some people just don’t get it,” Leakes replied.

Others caught the joke and called out those who got all riled up over nothing.

“She’s making a joke people DAMN! She’s not saying she wants to look like a white woman, she’s trolling and throwing shade at the people who say that about her.”

This is why Kate Middleton always wears white at christenings

The Duchess of Cambridge chose to wear an Alexander McQueen outfit for the christening of Prince Louis today at the Chapel Royal at St James’ Palace in London.

It’s a nice nod to the christenings of Prince George in 2013, and Princess Charlotte in 2015, as she also opted for Sarah Burton designs then, in a similar shade of cream.

This time round, the dress featured a simple v neck and slightly padded shoulders, and was nipped in at the waist, with a flared skirt.

She accessorised with a 1940s style hat by Jane Taylor and pearl cluster earrings in the shape of a flower.

Kate Middleton

Kate Middleton at Prince George’s christening in 2013, wearing Alexander McQueen

While there’s no Royal etiquette rule that says what the mother of the baby can and can’t wear to Christenings, Kate has carried on this little tradition herself.

First off, wearing cream matches the Royal Christening Robe, which is a replica of the fine Honiton lace gown made in 1841 for the christening of Queen Victoria’s eldest daughter, Victoria, Princess Royal.

The original gown was subsequently worn for all Royal christenings, including The Queen, her children and her grandchildren, until the youngest of The Queen’s eight grandchildren, James, Viscount Severn.

The family were photographed together for the first time

The Duchess of Cambridge also wore a cream Alexander McQueen dress for Princess Charlotte’s christening in 2015

Secondly, there is the connotation of the colour, which often represents purity, innocence and new beginnings – very apt for a christening.

But there might be another significant detail in Kate’s outfit this time round: the fact that she wore floral pearl earrings. You see Princess Diana’s favourite flower was a white rose, and while the shape is more that of a daisy than a rose, it could be a subtle nod to the late Royal, who never got the chance to meet her grandchildren.

How to Wear White as a Menswear Color

For many men, the only white articles of clothing they wear are white dress shirts, undershirts, and underwear. They may avoid white either because it seems to be too bold a statement, they are concerned about keeping it clean, or it’s simply nowhere to be found.

Or, white can simply be taken for granted. However, a full range of white clothes has much to recommend for the contemporary gent, and the arrival of summer is the perfect opportunity to add more white to your wardrobe. Today we will explore the different ways men can wear white.

Double Breasted Off White Suit

Double-breasted off-white suit with white shoes

A Brief History of White Clothes

White was originally associated with the garb of the wealthy for a variety of reasons, first of all, because keeping white clothing clean was expensive in the age before dry cleaning and washing machines, requiring regular care and maintenance that was beyond the reach of many.

Beau Brummell in 1805

Beau Brummell in 1805 wearing a white shirt and stock

By extension, wearing white was an outward sign that you had enough money to afford the luxury of its care. More than this, it showed you were rich enough that you didn’t even need to engage in any manual labor where you had a chance of getting dirty.

Two gentlemen, one wearing a classic tennis sweater and shorts ensemble, which the other sports white pants, a gray blazer, and a red carnation boutonniere in an Apparel Arts illustration from 1936

White was also the color worn by those people–again, the wealthy elite–who went to resorts and country destinations in the summer, both because white helps reflect hot sunlight and because it enforced the idea of leisure.  They would participate in sporting activities on holiday, which is how tennis became associated with white uniforms. When the well-heeled returned to the city in the autumn, they switched back to more drab gear, hence the supposed “no white after Labor Day” rule.

Leonardo DiCaprio as the great Jay Gatsby in a white suit. Does he look sullen because he has to keep it clean?

The good news is that today, we have the luxury of washing machines and fairly inexpensive dry cleaning, so wearing white is not limited to the rich. There may still be some situations where wearing the color can evoke class associations, which will be discussed below, but for the most part, it can be worn by anyone on a variety of different occasions.

When Can You Wear White?

The short answer is summer; the long answer is that it’s possible any time of the year if done properly.

White Looks Best in Warm, Sunny Weather

In hot weather, white keeps you cool as it reflects sunlight, something you can see from the prevalence of white clothes in hot climates, including the Middle East and India. The very brilliance of white itself makes it look its best in the sunshine. For this reason, it’s especially at home in resort-like settings. Think the Greek islands, the Amalfi Coast, and the French or Italian Riviera in July. This includes cruises, which also are warm-weather ventures. To be honest, white also looks best with tanned skin because of the contrast, so if you’re fair or pale as a sheet, you should consider other light colors that will give you better contrast. Those who have olive, tanned or brown complexions have it made when it comes to wearing white.

In Cooler or Cloudy Weather

In cloudy weather, white clothes can look out of place. The false “no-white-after-Labor-Day” rule notwithstanding, predominantly white outfits are usually avoided after summer because what looks great in August looks glaring when days are not as bright. White demands sunlight to tame it and tone it down. In fall and winter, muted hues like olive green, gray, and brown are prevalent both in nature and as attire. Follow the seasonal trend. This is also good wisdom to follow because cold weather usually brings rain and thus mud, snow, and slush, all of which can wreak havoc on white garments. However, you can wear winter white, which is an off-white rather than a pure white, on sunny December days, few they may be, usually in the form of flannel pants. I find that when January comes along, I am longing for something to remind me of summer, so if I get a sunny blue-sky day I’m putting on winter-white trousers. With global climate change, there is bound to be a 50-degree mid-winter day when you can do it.  Of course, if you are fortunate to live in a climate where sunshine and warmth are in abundance year round (Florida comes to mind), you can wear regular white nearly anytime you, please.

White for Winter

White for winter, well probably Italian winter rather than Minnesota winter.

How to Wear White

White Shirts

One might imagine that the basic white dress shirt doesn’t require much discussion since it’s the one white item most men own (not including white unmentionables); a white shirt is standard. However, some lesser known information about white shirts can be useful to help you maintain classic style. Originally, the long-sleeved white shirt with buttons and a collar that we know today was seen as an undershirt, meant to be hidden: hence the requirement to wear waistcoats and vests and ties–anything to hide as much of the white as possible. Nowadays, we wear white button-down shirts uncovered with just a pair of pants, which our forbears would see as us going about in our undergarments.

Napoleon’s shirt, which was only worn as an undershirt despite its extremely fine hand-stitching

Although we may applaud the more relaxed standards of the present when it’s 90 degrees out, and we can wear only a white polo and jeans without getting looks of disgust, some of the associations of white shirts with underwear still apply today, particularly when you’re wearing tailoring or are dressed formally. When you put on a tuxedo, for example, you’re supposed to wear a black cummerbund or a waistcoat to prevent the white of your shirt from showing beneath the bottom button of your jacket. When you wear a vest, either as part of a three-piece suit or in a different color or pattern with the bottom button open, your trousers are supposed to have a high enough rise to avoid showing the white of your shirt under your vest. It goes without saying that if you are actually wearing a white undershirt, it should never be exposed at your neck. To remember these style rules, it’s useful to think of the white t-shirt as underwear, and by traditional standards of propriety at least, you shouldn’t show your underwear.

A definite style don't: a visible undershirt

A definite style don’t: a visible undershirt

Another consideration that may alter your thinking about white shirts is the fact that white can be stark and cold because of its brightness, so while it works like a charm with suits or sport coats in cool colors (gray, blue) if you’re wearing warmer hues like a green linen sport coat or brown flannel suit, you might choose a shirt in ivory or ecru (white with a warm yellow undertone) or light blue instead to soften the contrast.

White Pants

After a white shirt, white trousers are probably the next most common clothing item in menswear, though the drop off is steep in terms of how many men wear them. Pants may also be the most difficult white item to wear in terms of keeping them clean, which could account for their rarity. On sunny summer weekends, I prefer the Southern European vibe created by wearing white cotton pants, especially when paired with bright linen sports coats. White pants are more difficult for the workplace because they do present a strong statement in their own right; however, you can make them fade back, so they almost become the equivalent of a white shirt, if you pair them with softer or more muted jacket colors like olive, brown or navy.

White Ring Jacket trousers

White trousers can look fairly subdued when paired with more muted colors.

Of course, a navy blazer, especially double breasted with gold buttons and white trousers make for a classic nautical-themed outfit. Now you’re off work again and on a boat, whether it be a city cruise, two-week cruise to the Caribbean, or your own private yacht. This is the one place where white (in combination with other garments, admittedly) still can evoke class consciousness and accusations of snobbery.

Ralph Lauren in a Navy Double Breasted Blazer and White Pants

Ralph Lauren in a navy double-breasted blazer and wide white pants, a look that screams upper class; the car doesn’t hurt either.

As if to ruin all the fun, white pants do present the particular hazard of getting dirty fast; the hems will readily accumulate street grime and the seat can become sullied at a moment’s notice if you sit on a subway or park bench. I have a number of solutions. First, buy cotton that can be washed. Then spot treat and wash any individual stains at the end of the day or shortly thereafter. For the rare situations when more extensive marking occurs, even if the item says “dry clean only,” you can hand-wash white cotton chinos or put them in the washing machine with cold water on the gentle cycle. Of course, you can just dry clean. Secondly, spend less on white pants. It is easier to enjoy wearing a $ 189 pair of white pants from SuitSupply and wash it occasionally than worry about damaging an $ 800 pair from Salvatore Ambrosi, bespoke quality notwithstanding.

Beyond that, exercise precautions when wearing white trousers. For instance, I avoid sitting directly on the half-wall at Pitti Uomo before making sure it isn’t covered with cigarette ash. When I’m on vacation mode and wearing white pants, I’m also often carrying a pamphlet, map, site guide or other fold-out documents that I use to sweep away debris before I sit; or I unfold and sit on the paper. Better to look a bit fastidious than ruin one’s pants!

White trousers at Pitti Uomo

So, yes, white trousers (and jackets) do require a certain degree of added caution and care as well as extra fastidiousness. But, if you’re already the sort of guy who spends time getting your tie dimple exactly right or who polishes his shoes to a mirror shine, this will be nothing new to you. If anything, it’s a chance to slow down and be mindful, which we need in our accelerated world.  If you aren’t the cautious sort, then you’re also likely from the school of thought that says white clothes are meant to show some character marks, so you too can wear them and just not give a damn. The penchant of Gazette readers for tailored clothes also makes wearing white pants easier: even if you sit on something, you can rest assured in the fact that your rear end will be obscured by the vent flap of your jacket when you’re walking around.

Visible pocket liners with white trousers

Pocket liners are often visible with white cotton pants

The second issue with white pants is their relative transparency: the bare skin of your thighs where they touch the cloth will generally be somewhat visible through your trousers. You can solve the issue by purchasing (or commissioning) white pants that are lined to the knee, but an added heat-inducing layer sort of defeats the purpose of reflecting sunlight by wearing white. I personally wear gray underwear that covers my thighs and again rely on my sport coat to (literally) cover my rear end. Pocket liners are another story though, as it is common for these to be visible through the fabric on the front of white pants. One option is to cut the liners out and stitch closed the remnant, professionally or otherwise. You’ll lose the use of the front pockets, but those who privilege style over functionality are reluctant to load the front pockets of trousers anyway to preserve clean lines.

Another is to find a pair of white pants with no pocket liners, to begin with. Bonobos used to sell chinos with this option. The last possibility is to just go with it–visible pocket liners are part of a casual “I don’t care” summer look, like wrinkled linen. Then again, the quarters of your wrinkled linen sports coat may hide the liners anyway.

White Suits and Sport Coats

There’s a certain man or type of man who can pull off a white suit. When I was growing up, that man was Don Johnson, but nowadays, you don’t want to remind people of Miami Vice circa 1984. The other option is to go for more of a “Southern Gentleman” look a la Tom Wolfe, whose trademark white suit has been in the news more since his passing; the effect can be similar to wearing seersucker.  It should be noted, however, that Wolfe has said he wore white initially to get attention as a reporter. People would notice him in a crowd of other journalists and answer his questions. Rest assured, you too will be noticed too in a white suit. Furthermore, you want to avoid being labeled the guy who imitates Tom Wolfe. Safer and a bit easier to pull off is an off-white or cream suit, in some warm weather fabric like cotton or linen, but safer yet is hedging your bets and halving the risk by wearing just the top half.

Tom Wolfe in a white suit

Tom Wolfe in his iconic white suit; we find the dark shirt and socks a bit too stark in terms of contrast

White sports coats present the perfect opportunity to break out the colored shirts. I personally favor light blue or perhaps a navy and white gingham plaid shirt, though avoid dark colored shirts because the contrast will be too strong, and you’ll end up evoking John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever.

White Jacket At Sea 4

White jacket worn at sea with a blue shirt

Yes, you can wear a pure white shirt with a white jacket, whether a linen sports coat for summer or a dinner jacket, but to do this successfully, you want to create a bit of contrast or differentiation between your two layers. To some extent, this will be natural since no two whites are exactly alike; the difference in the material will present different gradients of white. Furthermore, most white jackets are in reality off-white since linen and wool cannot be dyed to a pure white because of natural oils and the overall nature of the fibers. So, your white shirt will always be whiter than your jacket. However, you can emphasize the distinction further by wearing a white shirt with some sheen (like a royal Oxford) or a subtle pattern, like end-on-end, twill or herringbone.

A white herringbone shirt

A white shirt with a subtle pattern can help distinguish it if you wear a white jacket along with it.

Whether you get an off-white suit or a white jacket, it’s paramount that your choice fits you well. If it’s already too big it will look even bigger on you because white clothes reflect back a lot of light to the viewer; it’s a matter of optics.

White for Formal Wear

Though evening wear is usually associated with black tie, the dinner jacket worn by Sean Connery’s James Bond in Goldfinger has become an inspiration for those looking to inject “white”–well, ivory, actually–into formal wear. Most commonly the white dinner jacket makes an appearance in tropical weddings or cruises near the equator.

In the Bond films, it is worn variously in the Bahamas, Morocco, India, and Latin America; a hot climate is essential. Even though a white dinner jacket may be worn by some in hot weather anywhere, like an outdoor summer opera in the UK, it is usually seen by purists as out of place.

Ralph Lauren 4x1 Dinner Jacket

Ralph Lauren 4×1 White Shawl Collar Dinner Jacket

If you do wear it, a shawl collar is preferred rather than a peak lapel, as the shawl is more in line with the relaxed nature of the white jacket; pockets should still be jetted rather than flap. Your choice of material should be a light wool even though cotton or linen versions can be found, as these will rumple and wrinkle. Check out our guide to dinner jackets for more specifics on the white version.

White Menswear Accessories

After the white dress shirt, the other essential white item most men own is a white linen pocket square, whose presence is intended to coordinate with said white shirt under all conditions: with a tux, a suit, or a sport coat. For an added accent of white, go beyond the idea of the pocket square and use a white boutonniere flower, like a white carnation, rose or edelweiss (for something different), all available from Fort Belvedere.

White boutonnieres Fort Belvedere

White neckties are rarer but can stand out as something different, again, mainly in warm, sunny weather. They aren’t the easiest to find but are generally white silks printed with a small geometric motif in other colors. These are sharp enough to be “ceremonial” or wedding ties but can also be dressed down, perhaps with a blue linen sports coat. As with all light-colored ties, the prime consideration is making sure it stands out visually from your shirt, so a white tie can suggest wearing a light blue shirt instead of another white. Or, you can cheat and go with an ivory tie. Just remember not to go too dark with your shirt to avoid making the outfit look inelegant.

A white silk tie with geometric motif

A white silk tie will still stand out against a white cotton shirt.

Just as every man is advised to own a white linen pocket square, he is also warned never to wear white socks. This should not be a strict rule, as it is presented as a way to keep people from wearing white gym socks outside of athletic settings. White dress socks are different. In those situations where you can’t wear low-cut invisible socks with white trousers, what else would you wear? This is even more true for winter white flannel pants. White dress socks are even more difficult to find than white neckties but a pair or two in cotton or linen should be part of your wardrobe if you own white pants.

White Shoes

Continuing with footwear, white shoes are an underappreciated choice for summer shoes. Interestingly, more men will wear white sneakers (with the aforementioned white gym socks) than white dress shoes. The classic American choice is white bucks. Readers of a certain age will remember “The White Buck Kid,” singer Pat Boone, who was known for these shoes, but they are associated more broadly with trad style. As the name implies, they are made of white deer leather or buckskin, and the good thing about them is that if they get scuffed or distressed, it’s an expected part of their character.

white buckskin shoe

If you want to mix white with another hue, you can try spectators instead. Defined simply as two-toned shoes, usually Oxfords or derbies with a wingtip and broguing, spectators are a showy choice with vintage appeal that can pair with other classic menswear like tab collar shirts and collar pins. As such they are also more formal than bucks.

Navy Jacket, Winchester Shirt with Club Collar, Collar Pin & Spectators

Spectator shoes pair well with white trousers.

Conclusion

After reading about the many possibilities for wearing white, hopefully, you will try adding more of this hue to your wardrobe, and not just in the form of another white shirt or pocket square. White embodies the spirit of summer, and in cold weather, you can still wear winter white on sunny days to brighten up the season. You do have to be somewhat outgoing to wear it, especially in our drab casual culture, but if you’re well dressed, you’ll stand out anyway, so add some individual panache and boldly put on white.

‘The First Purge’ Envisions a Second Civil War Between White Nationalists and People of Color

Universal Pictures

As we’ve learned from the first three entries in the Purge franchise, “the Purge” is an annual night of lawlessness sanctioned by the United States government.

Instituted by the reigning right-wing New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) Party, it’s ostensibly a method for allowing citizens to cleanse themselves of their fury. In a nation wracked by economic woes, unchecked crime and rampant drug use, this evening of barbarism is sold to the public as a “societal catharsis,” even as our despotic domestic powers-that-be use it as a covert way to eradicate the supposedly greatest burdens on American life (i.e. minorities) and, in doing so, achieve a form of population control. It’s anarchy in service of racist/classist genocide.

And as The First Purge now reveals, its original architect was none other than…Marisa Tomei?

WASHINGTON/RIYADH (Reuters) – The leader of Saudi Arabia promised President Donald Trump that he can raise oil production if needed and the country has 2 million barrels per day of spare capacity, the White House said on Saturday, rowing back on an earlier Trump tweet that appeared to suggest the Saudis had agreed to boost output by that amount.

Fox News host Tucker Carlson is very concerned about people likening him to a certain genocidal dictator.

“The cost is entirely on you,” Carlson told his audience in a Monday night monologue in which he warned of immigrants moving to their neighborhoods, “but don’t complain, or else they will call you ‘Hitler.’”

But Carlson’s monologue wouldn’t have been far out of place on a white supremacist forum. Hours after ProPublica released disturbing audio of immigrant children who had been separated from their parents at the U.S. border, Carlson told viewers the immigrants were coming “to change your country forever.”

‘Legally Blonde 3’: Why We Need Elle to Take Over the White House

The original feminist icon is back! MGM recently announced that, after 15 years, Elle Woods is finally returning to the big screen with the third installment of the amazing Legally Blonde saga. The film is set to open on Valentine’s Day, 2020.

After becoming the most fabulous lawyer at Harvard in the first movie and then finding her way into Washington politics in the sequel, what’s the next step for our pink heroine to take? Well, it’s pretty obvious that we are looking at the next President of the United States of America.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous President of the United States

The race to the white house won’t be easy for our heroine.
The race to the White House won’t be easy for our heroine.

Reese Witherspoon’s character has seen a lot of growth since the first Legally Blonde film. She evolved from a conceited rich white girl into an empowered woman who does everything her own way without compromising her ideals.

The last scene of Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde clearly points us in the direction of the White House. But while it may seem like the next logical step in the franchise, the race to for the presidency won’t be an easy one for our heroine.

But, what exactly should we expect from this third installment?

The White House Definitely Needs a Touch of Pink

Elle will have to work twice as hard as her opponent(s) to prove to the masses, the politicians and even to herself that she deserves to be the next POTUS.
Elle will have to work twice as hard as her opponent(s) to prove to the masses, politicians, and even to herself that she deserves to be the next POTUS.

Even when the Legally Blonde franchise is seen as comedy, the writers behind it have always found a way to shed some light on social issues like female empowerment, unethical treatment of animals, and even the LGBTQ community.

But while the actual plot is still unknown, if the movie were to play it smart, the best thing to do would be to show Elle as a mature and smart congresswoman who decides to become the next President of the United States to fight social injustice.

Our heroine will likely discover that women are not easily accepted in positions of power. She’ll have to work twice as hard as her opponent(s) to prove to the masses, other politicians, and even to herself that she deserves to be the next president. And Elle’s husband, Emmet, will need to be 200% more supportive to help tackle all the things Elle is going to face.

A stereotypical misogynistic male politician is probably going to be the villain of choice for Legally Blonde 3. As such, he will probably try to show that Elle, just by being a woman, is less capable than him of being president. He will probably oppose her with everything he has, including dirty, underhanded, and potentially unethical tactics.

The Social Relevance of a Modern Elle Woods

For Elle to be relevant she will need to be more mature and appealing to newer and more critical audiences.
For Elle to be relevant she will need to be more mature and appeal to newer and more critical audiences.

While strong female movie icons like Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor have surfaced in the past, recent years have seen a refreshing lineup of kickass women like Wonder Woman, Okoye, Lara Croft, and Dr Elizabeth Shaw. However, these great role models and examples of empowered women, sci-fi heroines, and superheroes aren’t examples that everyone can follow because of their particular, and sometimes fictional, careers.

In an era where social campaigns like #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter are a reality many decide to ignore, a real and approachable feminist icon who works hard to achieve her goals with sheer determination and will is as important as it could ever be.

Elle has never shied away from hard work, confronting powerful men and getting her point across. And that’s definitely the kind of president most of us would love to see gracing our screens.

Is Legally Blonde 3 Too Late?

Legally Blonde 3 has definitely a lot of potential, but it will have to go big or go home.
‘Legally Blonde 3’ definitely has a lot of potential, but it will have to go big or go home.

Even as this sequel comes more than 15 years late, many factors can instill new life into the iconic franchise. A good script and a more realistic and approachable characterization of Elle Woods are going to be the most important elements that will make or break the film.

First and foremost, the cast in this one is also going to be pivotal. Some of the old tropes that previous films relied on, like the dumb blonde or the flamboyantly gay guy, aren’t going to fly this time around. These stereotypes will look bad in the eyes of an audience with high hopes for the movie but who are also more aware and critical of these problematic elements in Hollywood. Likewise, if writers tackle social issues, fans will expect diverse representation of queer, black, and Latino social fighters too.

Not least important is that the movie is to be released in the year of the next US presidential elections. As if that wasn’t enough, the film will also compete against unnamed projects by DC and Disney as well as Nimoma.

Legally Blonde 3 clearly has a lot of potential. But the movie will have to go big and make the right decisions or go home without a chance.

Brie Larson wants to see more film critics of colour rather than just ‘white dudes’

‘I do not need a 40-year-old white dude to tell me what didn’t work for him out of a Wrinkle in Time. It wasn’t made for him.’

Rob Latour/Variety/REX/Shutterstock

As the inner workings of Hollywood have slowly come to light with the Me Too movement out in full force and more minority representation trickling onscreen, things seem to be gradually changing for the better. From Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins smashing box office records to Get Out becoming the most profitable film last year and even an Arab female director scholarship raising POC voices, Brie Larson has highlighted one overlooked area that needs to be worked on next.

Namely, the mainly white and male industry of film journalism.

Brie was honoured with a Crystal Award for Excellence in Film the other night and used her speech to draw attention to the issue. She quoted a recent study of review site Rotten Tomatoes, saying, ‘67 percent of the top critics reviewing the 100 highest-grossing movies in 2017 were white males; less than a quarter were white women; less than ten percent were underrepresented men. Only 2.5 percent of those top critics were women of colour.’

brie larson film criticism

Matt Baron/REX/Shutterstock

But you might be wondering, why does that matter? Well, given that the US population is much more diverse than that (‘30 percent white men, 30 percent white women, 20 percent men of colour and 20 percent women of colour’) and it’s impossible not to have your own upbringing/identity affect your reviews in some way – it only make sense that we need more diverse voices speaking about films. Especially when they’re films especially aimed at minorities, as Brie pointed out.

Using the recent film Wrinkle in Time directed by black female director Ava DuVernay, she explained, ‘I do not need a 40-year-old white dude to tell me what didn’t work for him out of a Wrinkle in Time. It wasn’t made for him. I want to know what that film meant to women of colour, to biracial women, to teen women of colour, to teens that are biracial. These are just facts these are not my emotions. I want to know what my work means to the world, not a narrow view.’

brie larson film criticism

James Shaw/REX/Shutterstock

Brie was very careful to bring up not once, but three times that she wasn’t saying that white male critics shouldn’t have a voice as she said repeatedly, ‘Am I saying I hate white dudes? No I’m not.’

She continued, ‘What I am saying is that if you make a movie that is a love letter to women of colour, there is an insanely low chance a woman of colour will have the chance to see your movie and review your movie. We need to be conscious of our bias and make sure that everyone is in the room.’

The entire room apparently broke out into rapturous applause, according to Deadline. Brie also explained that this was a really crucial issue for her, because it was basically off the back of favourable reviews of her film Room that her career exploded.

‘Good reviews out of festivals give small independent films a fighting chance to be bought and seen,’ Brie said. ‘Good reviews help films gross money. Good reviews slingshot films into awards contenders. A good review can change your life. It changed mine.’

brie larson film criticism

Andrew H. Walker/REX/Shutterstock

Brie (and Sundance Film Festival and TIFF through her) dropped the mic however when she revealed that the two festivals would be committing ‘at least 20 percent of their top level press passes’ to ‘underrepresented critics’.

She then called on other films to do the same in their press screenings and coverage by reaching out to three underrepresented males, three white females and three underrepresented females so that the ‘average critic pool would match the US population in just five years’.

She ended, ‘Female and underrepresented critics can’t review what they don’t see. Many are denied accreditation or access to press screenings. Please make sure that these invites and credentials find their way to more underrepresented journalists and critics, many of whom are freelancers.’

Outfit Formula: Summer Column of White

Last week’s outfit formula was a Summer column of black, which was more popular than I expected it to be. This week I’m talking about its polar opposite — a column of white.

First, I’d like to debunk a few myths about wearing white:

  1. ANY size and height can wear white. The fit and the fabric of an item play a bigger role in making an item flattering than its colour. My size US16/18 clients rock white jeans, pants and tops. So does my 4ft 9” size US000 friend.
  2. Everyone looks good in a shade of white. It’s a question of choosing YOUR white. Bright optical white, off-white, ivory, cream, champagne, oatmeal, bone or a very light tan can be your white. Sometimes an extremely pale pearl grey can be your version of white.
  3. No need to match your whites exactly. Mismatching them looks better than you might think.
  4. White is not that impractical. Black and dark colours can show as many stains as white, depending on the cause of the stain.
  5. Pale-skinned people can successfully wear white, and so can blondes. Wear a little more eye make-up, add some blush, and define your lips because it’s that easy to look bright in white.

Here are four ways to create a column of white to get you started.

1. White Separates & Cognac

A chic and dressy combination with cream pants and blouse, and cognac belt and bag. The shoes are white, but feel free to throw in cognac footwear. White tops can be see-through, which means wearing a white, cream or tan camisole and nude-for-you bra. Ankle-strapped footwear is perfect with cropped pants, and they don’t need to be heeled.

2. White Jeans & Oatmeal

This is the easiest combination. Pair white jeans with a white top and layer a tan, oatmeal, bone or cream cardi over the top. Feel free to layer an optical white cardi for a full-on column of white. Add cognac, tan, white or metallic footwear and bag. A belt to match is optional.

Old Navy Open Front Plus Size Long Line Sweater

3. White Dress & High-Contrast Support Act

A casual and pretty white dress is beautiful. I love how this one has been combined with casually elegant flat sandals, and a bag to match which pulls together the look and amps up the polish. Here, a black bag and shoes create a high contrast with the white. It’s especially effective bookending with black hair.

THREE GRACES LONDON Mable Ruffled Linen Midi Dress

4. Avant-Garde Cream

Create avant-garde, fluid and somewhat oversized layers with lots of drape in shades of white. Here, the shorter length of the culottes and shorter asymmetrical hem make the silhouettes just flattering enough by providing structure. Black shoes effectively bookend the outfit. Metallic, pearl grey, white, tan or cream footwear will work too.

Eileen Fisher Cozy Organic Cotton Wrap Vest

White is my favourite neutral, and I can wear warm and cool tones of it. I therefore have lots of white in my wardrobe and will wear a column of white before a column of black. I don’t have a white dress yet, but can pull together many combinations with white jeans. How about you?

Stephen Colbert Is Convinced He Knows Why Trump Disinvited the Philadelphia Eagles From the White House

It’s a long-standing tradition that Super Bowl champions are invited to the White House to meet the president. This year, though, Donald Trump rescinded the invitation to the reigning champs, the Philadelphia Eagles. Trump canceled the visit from the Eagles, because some players “disagree with their President because he insists that they proudly stand for the National Anthem,” he said in a statement Monday evening.

There’s just a small thing that Colbert wanted the president to consider one thing about his rescinded invitation to the Super Bowl champions. “Here’s the thing: no Eagles players took a knee or stayed in the locker room during the anthem last season,” Colbert pointed out on Tuesday night’s episode of The Late Show. “So Donald Trump is blaming a group of black guys for something they didn’t do. They’ll have to rename the Eagles the ‘Central Park 53’.” The last jab was a reference to the fact that Trump believes that the five black and Hispanic teenagers who became known as the “Central Park Five” are guilty, despite their exoneration.

Colbert also called out Fox News, who “never lets the truth get in the way of a good story” ran images of the Eagles’ players taking a knee alongside a story about the rescinded invitation. That wasn’t what the picture showed, though. “Eagles tight end Zach Ertz pointed out on Twitter that was actually footage of him ‘praying before games with his teammates well before the anthem.’ Come on, look, look. It‘s an honest mistake: Fox News also thought this picture was Jesus calling a touchdown!”

‘No One Wants the Invite Anyway.’ LeBron James and Steph Curry Say Their Teams Won’t Visit White House

(CLEVELAND) — Stephen Curry and LeBron James spoke their minds last year. They have not changed their minds this year.

No matter whose team wins the NBA championship, neither superstar will be at the White House anytime soon.

On the day when the Philadelphia Eagles were supposed to be there to commemorate winning the Super Bowl — a visit that was canceled by President Donald Trump and had the White House accusing players who weren’t planning on attending of abandoning their fans — Curry and James were among those speaking out at the NBA Finals in support of the Eagles.

“I’m not surprised. It’s typical of him,” James, the Cleveland star, said of Trump’s decision to cancel. “I know no matter who wins this series, no one wants the invite anyway. So it won’t be Golden State or Cleveland going.”

On the eve of Game 3 of the Warriors-Cavaliers series, politics dominated the conversation.

Curry raised Trump’s ire last year when he said he wouldn’t go to the White House, prompting the President to disinvite him and the champion Golden State Warriors.

Curry said Tuesday that he spoke with a current Eagles player about the team’s decision-making process and how it went deeper than disagreeing with Trump policies and the ongoing issue of some NFL players choosing not to stand for the pregame playing of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

“It’s an important conversation, but you can’t control what other people try to do, or try to control the narrative or things like that,” Curry said.

Curry said the team has been on the same page after his comments last year and Trump’s subsequent revoking of the Warriors’ invitation. “And every team that’s won a championship since then has gone through that.”

There has been clear tension between many star athletes and the current administration throughout the Trump presidency. Trump has often blasted the NFL players who have kneeled for the national anthem, a protest that started in 2016 when San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick did so to protest racism and more specifically the killing of black men by police.

Trump said the Eagles’ event was called off because some of their players “disagree with their President because he insists that they proudly stand for the National Anthem, hand on heart, in honor of the great men and women of our military and the people of our country.”

No Eagles players kneeled during the anthem last season.

“Instead the decision was made to lie, and paint the picture that these players are anti-America, anti-flag and anti-military,” the Eagles’ Malcolm Jenkins wrote in a statement posted to social media Tuesday .

The WNBA champion Minnesota Lynx haven’t been invited to celebrate their most recent title, something James called “laughable.” Villanova, the reigning NCAA men’s champion, has not revealed if an invitation was sent. Many members of the U.S. Olympic Team that competed earlier this year in South Korea did not attend a White House reception.

Hockey’s Pittsburgh Penguins and baseball’s Houston Astros have accepted invitations to the White House for the traditional meeting with the President in recent months, as have several college teams. When the New England Patriots went last year, half the team chose not to attend.

The Warriors, in lieu of going to the White House, spent that day taking a group of children to the National Museum of African American History and Culture a few miles away.

“I think the President has made it pretty clear he’s going to try to divide us, all of us in this country, for political gain,” said Golden State coach Steve Kerr, who has often criticized Trump and his policies. “So it’s just the way it is. I think we all look forward to the day when we can go back to just having a celebration of athletic achievement and celebrate Americans for their achievement, their good deeds.”

Kerr also lauded the Eagles for being what he called “fantastic citizens in their own community.”

“It will be nice when we can just get back to normal in three years,” Kerr said.

The overwhelming issue surrounding the Eagles’ planned visit was that most of the team was not going to attend, and that was a major factor in Trump deciding to pull the invitation.

“What else do you expect Trump to do?” Golden State’s Kevin Durant said. “When somebody says they don’t want to come to the White House, he disinvites them. So the photo op don’t look bad. We get it at this point. But it’s good that guys are sticking to what they believe in and what they want to do. Like guys said before me, I’m sure whoever wins this series won’t be going.”

The Conservative War on Hip-Hop: White Scapegoating and Black Respectability

Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast

There has always been an uneasy, often-exploitative relationship between black creativity and white consumption. That conflict is most obviously crystallized in contemporary culture via hip-hop, an art form born of the triumph and tragedy of black experience and expression. So often, when black art presents black humanity unashamedly—that is, flaws and all—that presentation is used to justify the dehumanizing of black folks. Rappers say bad words and rap about bad things, so it justifies black people being viewed badly—that’s the general argument for most who blame rappers for racism.

And that argument has sadly been prominent among the more elitist corners of black culture. “Pull your pants up and the cops won’t shoot you.” But that position has always been inherently racist, and it’s long past time for the upwardly mobile black folks to stop co-signing the racism.

White pundits have made hip-hop the “problem” with black culture for years, and they’ve had lots of help. Jazz legend Wynton Marsalis, for what seems like the 100th time, recently reiterated his disdain for hip-hop. The crotchety Pulitzer Prize winner has been railing against the rappity rap music for years, and in a recent appearance on The Washington Post’s podcast Cape Up with Jonathan Capehart, he talked about hip-hop, the recent removal of Confederate monuments and what he feels is damaging to race relations in America.

Say What Now? White Woman Calls the Cops on Black Yale Student Taking a Nap in Dorm Common Room [Video]

In today’s episode of ‘Living While Black,’ a white graduate student at Yale called the police on a Black student who fell asleep in the common area of their dorm.

via NYDN:

The white woman confronted Lolade Siyonbola, 34, after she fell asleep on the couch in the school’s Hall of Graduate Studies.

“I have every right to call the police. You cannot sleep in that room,” she said to Siyonbola.

When police arrived at the scene, they told Siyonbola “She called us [and] said there’s somebody who appeared they weren’t … where they were supposed to be.”

The cops, who asked to see Siyonbola’s ID, proceeded to question her for more than 15 minutes before they confirmed she was a student at Yale.

They said the process was prolonged because her name was misspelled in a school database of student information.

During their interactions, Siyonbola unlocked the door to her dorm room to show them that she was a student and called the officers’ behavior “harassment.”

“I really don’t know if there’s a justification for you actually being in the building,” she said.

“I deserve to be here. I pay tuition like everybody else. I’m not going to justify my existence here.”

More than 350,000 people watched Siyonbola’s Facebook videos, with some commenters expressing their support while others commended her for remaining calm.

Lynn Cooley, the dean of Yale’s graduate school of arts and sciences, sent an email to graduate students addressing the situation on Tuesday.

“Incidents like that of last night remind us of the continued work needed to make Yale a truly inclusive place,” she wrote.

“I am committed to redoubling our efforts to build a supportive community in which all graduate students are empowered in their intellectual pursuits and professional goals within a welcoming environment.”

You can watch video of this infuriating incident below. We commend Lolade for handling this unnecessary encounter so calmly.

How to Clean White Mesh Shoes in 5 Steps

If white shoes notoriously attract dirt and mesh shoes absorb virtually any substance they come in contact with, then white mesh shoes are the perfect storm. Fortunately, keeping your favorite white mesh shoes clean may be easier than you think. From your favorite summer slip-ons to the latest athletic footwear, all you need is a few simple materials to keep them looking good as new. Learn how to clean white mesh shoes in just five simple steps.

Using a soft shoe brush (a soft-bristled toothbrush can also do the trick), gently brush away exterior dirt. Use light, simple motions, and be sure to use a softer degree of pressure than you might with a heavier material like leather.

In a small bowl, combine warm water and a small amount of gentle laundry detergent. The consistency should be lightly soapy but not overly frothy or sticky. When cleaning white mesh shoes, it’s important to avoid bleaching agents since these can cause discoloration or damage to certain types of material.

Using a soft cloth, apply your cleaning solution to the shoes in gentle, circular motions. If you’re dealing with difficult grass stains or embedded dirt, it’s perfectly acceptable to bring your brush from step one back into the picture. Keep a second bowl of clean, warm water handy to periodically rinse the cloth to ensure you don’t spread existing stains on the material of the shoes.

When cleaning white mesh shoes, it’s important to fully remove all excess cleaning solution. Simply wet a second soft cloth so that it’s damp (not soaking), then wipe down the exterior of the shoes. Avoid fully dunking the shoes in water since this could affect their shape (and certain adhesives used in shoe design don’t respond well to this level of moisture).

Choose a cool, dry spot out of direct sunlight and allow your shoes to fully air-dry. If they got especially wet during the cleaning process, it might not hurt to fill them with paper towels to better retain their shape as they dry.

Up next, learn how to style white heels 10 different ways.

Score Meghan Markle’s Favorite White Sneakers for Under $100

It’s nearly impossible to overstate our love of white sneakers. Versatile and comfy, they’re the footwear phenomenon we hope will never go away. One person we’re pretty sure shares our love of fashion’s current MVP trend? None other than future royal Meghan Markle. Prince Harry’s bride-to-be has been spotted in Reebok’s Classic Leather white sneaker (which retail for $ 75; nordstrom.com, amazon.com, asos.com, and urbanoutfitters.com) on several occasions, often wearing them to and from yoga class.

It’s easy to see why Meghan is a devoted fan of the style. With spring in full swing, you’d be hard pressed to find an outfit these kicks couldn’t pair with. From distressed jeans to floral dresses, they go with everything — and make a cool (and comfortable) alternative to traditional flats. Plus, they’re an ultra wearable way to get in on the chunky “dad sneaker” trend, without actually looking like your dad.

And best of all? They can easily be dressed up or down – they look as polished with Markle’s skinny jeans as they do with her high-end bag, which is why they’re a favorite for everyone from celebrities to regular girls who want to look cute on a Saturday without being held back by their shoes.

RELATED PHOTOS: Meghan Markle’s Perfectly Polished Outfit Formula Is the Only Look You’ll Ever Need!

Fashion’s obsession with this shoe has yet to show any signs of slowing down. And with Meghan cosigning on this style, suffice it to say: the white sneaker is bound to stick around for a while. Long may it reign.

Make this Instant Pot creamy, dreamy white chili

by

Lindsay Weiss

posted in Life

We’ve made this twice in two weeks; it’s quickly become one of our favorites. It cooks up pretty quickly in the Instant Pot, which is part of the reason we adore it.

This is not a “soupy” chili — it’s nice and thick (but not too thick) and feels hearty enough to be a full meal. Served with some crusty bread and a little salad, it’s pretty much the bee’s knees.

We got smart and doubled the recipe so we have some to freeze.

Instant Pot White Chicken Chili

2 teaspoons olive oil
1 medium yellow onion, finely diced
2 garlic cloves, minced
2 lbs boneless skinless chicken breast or thighs
2 (14 oz) cans white cannellini beans, drained
2 cups chicken broth
1 Tbsp chili powder
1 Tbsp cumin
1/2 tsp black pepper
2 tsp salt
2 (4 oz) cans chopped green chiles
1/2 cup butter
6 Tbsp all purpose flour
2 cups milk, warmed
1/2 cup sour cream
1 lime, juiced
Optional: 1/2 cup grated Monterey jack cheese, for serving
Optional: cilantro, for garnish

Using the Instant Pot “saute” setting, saute the onions in olive oil until tender. Add in the garlic and saute for 30 seconds. Turn off the saute setting.

Place the chicken, canned beans or soaked dried beans, chicken broth, chili powder, cumin, pepper, 2 tsp salt and green chiles over the sauteeed onions. Stir to combine.

Cover the Instant Pot and secure the lid. Make sure valve is set to “seal.” Set the manual button or pressure cook button to 20 minutes.

When the timer beeps indicating the 20 minutes is up, let the pot sit there for another 10-15 minutes. Then move the valve to venting and release any remaining pressure.

Remove the chicken and place on a cutting board. Shred it and return it to the pot.

Melt the butter and use a whisk to stir the flour into the butter until it’s creamy and smooth. Turn the Instant Pot to the saute function and stir in the butter-flour mixture. Let the flour mixture thicken the soup. Stir every minute or so. This will take about 5 minutes.

Stir in the milk, sour cream, and lime juice. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Spoon into bowls and sprinkle with Monterey jack cheese and cilantro if desired.

Why Adam Rippon, Lindsey Vonn and More Winter Olympics Stars Skipped the White House Visit With Trump

President Donald Trump hosted American athletes who competed at the 2018 Winter Olympics and Paralympics at the White House on Friday — but some of the PyeongChang games’ most famous faces opted to skip the ceremony.

Ice skater Adam Rippon, skier Lindsey Vonn and snowboarder Chloe Kim are among the marquee names who skipped the trip to Washington. Five American Olympians — including cross-country skier Jessie Diggins, freestyle skier David Wise and biathlete Maddie Phaneuf — made the trip to Washington to meet with Congressional leaders on Wednesday about their climate change advocacy work with Protect Our Winters Alliance. But they won’t attend the White House celebration because they made the “Congressional briefing their priority,” a spokesperson for the athletes told USA Today.

Some athletes cited Trump’s politics as their reason for skipping the White House meeting, while others said they had scheduling conflicts. Almost 200 athletes were expected to attend the event, according to the Washington Post.

President Trump did not mention the absences in his remarks at Friday’s event. Instead, he lauded some of the other athletes in attendance, including figure skater Vincent Zhou, the gold medal-winning women’s hockey team and the men’s curling team, which also took home gold at the 2018 Olympics.

Here are some of the big names —including Adam Rippon, Lindsey Vonn and Chloe Kim — who chose to skip the 2018 Winter Olympics celebration at the White House this year:

Rippon, a 2018 TIME 100 honoree and the first openly gay American athlete to qualify for the Winter Olympics, told TIME last month that he wouldn’t attend.

“This Administration ran on a platform of fear. I don’t think that’s any way for us to live. I would never want my sister to be spoken to the way Donald Trump has spoken to women. I would never want anyone to talk to my mother that way. And my mother would never tolerate one of her sons doing that, either. I think we can do better,” Rippon said.

The figure skater, who won a bronze medal as a member of the U.S. figure skating team in PyeongChang, famously said he didn’t want to meet with Vice President Mike Pence before the 2018 Olympics and criticized the Vice President’s views on gay marriage.

Vonn, who won a bronze medal in PyeongChang in downhill skiing, told CNN in December 2017 that she would “absolutely not” go to the White House after the 2018 Olympics, which took place in February.

“Well I hope to represent the people of the United States, not the president,” Vonn told CNN at the time. “I want to represent our country well. I don’t think that there are a lot of people currently in our government that do that.”

Chloe Kim

Kim, the 17-year-old snowboarding sensation who won a gold medal at the 2018 Olympics, also didn’t attend Friday’s ceremony. She told the Washington Post she had a wedding to attend.

Kim, who was also a 2018 TIME 100 honoree, has spoken out about causes aligned against Trump in the past. In March, she tweeted her support for March for Our Lives, the massive gun control rally organized by the survivors of the deadly Parkland, Fla. shooting earlier this year.

Freestyle skier Kenworthy, who is also openly gay, opted not to make the trip to Trump’s White House.

Kenworthy has spoken out about Trump in the past, telling TIME in July 2017: “I think we had been two steps forward with Obama. And it’s a step back with the Trump administration.”

Shiffrin, who won a gold medal in giant slalom at the 2018 Olympics, chose not to visit the White House, according to the Washington Post. She did not speak publicly about her decision, but told CNN in 2016: “The value that [Trump] portrays to everyone is not ideal… I don’t think women are going to be looking to him. I think they still look to Hillary [Clinton].”

Like Sharon Stone before her, Bella Hadid makes the case for pairing a classic white shirt with a more formal outfit. The twist: instead of a button down, Bella just expertly reached instead for the plain white tee. It’s a staple so wonderful that not only does everyone own one, but a band was named after it (remember the group behind “Hey There Delilah”?).

The supermodel made an appearance at the Being Serena premiere on Wednesday, April 25, in NYC with her older sister Gigi and while both ladies opted for menswear-inspired suiting (Gigi’s was colored and paired with a bralette), Bella left her blazer unbuttoned to reveal a crisp white cotton shirt. Comfortable, classic — and a fresh twist for a fancy look .

Which got Us to thinking — you can never have enough white tees. Not only should you own a few different cuts (you never know what the occasion might be or what you will need to pair them), but because they get discolored easily, you most certainly need more than one.

So, inspired by the supermodel, shop the best white t-shirts on the market and go on with your understated cool-girl model sex appeal.

Sanders blasts reporters questioning White House’s support of free press

The Trump administration supports a free press — just not a rude one. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Wednesday rejected the idea that the president is responsible for the US falling from 43 to 45 on this year’s World Press Freedom Index — then proceeded to lay into reporters for their “tone”…

French First Lady Brigitte Macron Is a Grecian Dream at the White House

Brigitte Macron is on the move again. After conducting a state visit to India last month, the French first lady and President Emmanuel Macron have embarked on three-day trip to Washington, D.C., where she’s already shown off a handful of polished outfits since landing yesterday.

For a state dinner at the White House on Tuesday night, Macron was a Grecian vision in a embroidered white gown, which is definitely bridal-worthy in our minds. (Blame it on bridal fashion week or Meghan Markle, but weddings are on our brains right now.) Read on to see her formal look, plus everything she’s worn in Washington, D.C. so far.

Meghan Markle’s White Dress Features a Trend That Isn’t Going Anywhere

The world is anxiously awaiting the reveal of her wedding dress next month, but in the meantime, Meghan Markle just stepped out in a white dress that’s perfect for daytime spring and summer occasions that are a little more low-key than a royal wedding. After months of cold weather in the UK, we’ve gotten used to seeing Markle bundled up in sweaters, trousers, and coats, but since spring is in full swing, we’re finally getting a glimpse of the future royal’s warm-weather style.

The dress that Markle stepped out in today for a reception with Prince Harry is by Altuzarra, and she accessorized it with a crossbody bag, pumps, and a blazer draped over her shoulders. The pinstriped and belted dress features a trend that we think is classic enough to ensure that it’ll be around for awhile: big buttons. (For context, this detail is currently adorning tons of tops, dresses, outerwear, skirts, and even swimwear on the market, but it was Khaite that really set the trend in motion.) We love that Markle certainly isn’t a slave to trends, but she does seem to want to embrace ones that are more subtle and timeless than, say, the vinyl and PVC trend.

See Meghan Markle’s latest look and shop the trend below.

Cynthia Nixon: White People Get a Pass For Smoking Weed

Cynthia Nixon, Marijuana, Governor

Sex & the City actress Cynthia Nixon says that it’s time for New York to legalize marijuana.

Nixon, who’s running for governor of New York against Gov. Andrew Cuomo, came out in support for legalizing weed, saying that New York is falling behind other states and that Black and Latinos face the consequences of the drug being illegal.

“We have to stop putting people of color in jail for something that white people do with impunity,” Nixon said in a video she posted on Twitter. She added that “if there was more political courage coming out of Albany” the state would have legalized the drug for recreational use.

Cuomo disputed Nixon’s claim, citing that New York’s health department is studying the “economic health impacts of legalizing marijuana,” according to the New York Daily News.

“The simple truth is: For white people, the use of marijuana has effectively been legal for a long time,” she said. “Isn’t it time we legalize it for everybody else?”

Weekly Roundup: Dresses, White Jeans, Tops & Toppers

Spring and Summer collections are in full swing, and shop floors are looking great. I’m VERY happy to see more retailers offer extended sizes. Thank you White House Black Market, Nordstrom, Ann Taylor, Ralph Lauren, the Loft, Rachel Roy, Banana Republic, Boden, Madewell, and Anthropologie.

These items were winners on clients last week, and many are available in plus sizes, although you may need to click through to the plus size section to see the full set of sizes. White jeans that are thick, substantial, and don’t look like leggings have been a hard find. But thankfully, they’re surfacing a few styles at a time.

Visit the collection page to see the items alongside my descriptions.

The Note: White House census stance makes immigrants’ fears worse

The TAKE with MaryAlice Parks

The White House yesterday could have tried to allay the fears of immigrants, civil right activists, and Democrats worried that the last-minute addition to the 2020 census — a question on citizenship — will significantly dampen immigrant participation.

Press secretary Sarah Sanders could have said the White House wants everyone, regardless of status, to still participate. After all, the law dictates that the federal government try to count everyone, not just citizens.

She could have reminded people of another law, too, that says census data cannot be shared with any other government agency, or she could have said plainly that people will not be deported based on the data. She could have added that the White House wants a fair and accurate count to make sure inner cities and blue states are not essentially cheated out of federal funding if people are too nervous to open their doors to census workers.

But she didn’t.

Instead she talked about needing…
