Whatever Camp Is, You Won’t Find It in The Met’s ‘Camp’ Exhibit

Tim Teeman

Whatever else the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s much-hyped exhibit Camp: Notes on Fashion (May 9 to September 8) is, it is not camp. It does feature 250 outfits and objects, which are variously sparkly, spangly, striking, and outrageous. But the quantity of glitter you can throw over something doesn’t make it camp. It’s who or what is inhabiting the glitter that makes it camp—and this exhibit is way too clean and posh to examine the complexity of that.

And that’s only one of the problems with this show. It’s too polite to be camp, and it weirdly approaches camp as a concept of very expensive clothes designed for women. Camp-as-drag is about impersonating grandeur, parodying it; not buying it.

The clothes are all carefully curated. The show as fashion exhibit is rigorous. Yet these clothes are all on lifeless mannequins. They are bright, they are extravagant, they have big shoulders and outsized sculptural features. ‘Camp’ has been bestowed upon them, but on what qualitative basis?

Caster Semenya, Defiant After Race Win, Says She Won’t Take Hormone Reducing Drugs

Caster Semenya was defiant in every way at what very well could be her last 800 meter race.

Her raised fist at the start. Her unstoppable victory. And with her reply Friday to the big question of whether she will now submit to new testosterone regulations in track and field and take hormone-reducing medication.

“Hell no,” the Olympic champion from South Africa said.

Semenya responded to her defeat in a landmark court case against track and field’s governing body two days earlier with a resounding win in a place where she’s done nothing but win the last four years — over two laps of the track.

She won the 800 meters at the opening Diamond League meeting of the season in Doha, Qatar, with a meet record of 1 minute, 54.98 seconds. It was her fourth-fastest time ever. The only person ahead of her at any time during the race was the pacemaker.

Semenya’s nearest challenger, the Olympic silver medalist Francine Niyonsaba, was nearly three seconds and about 20 meters behind her — barely in the picture. Ajee Wilson of the United States was third.

It was Semenya’s first 800 meter race this year and first since losing her case against the IAAF this week.

“Actions speak louder than words,” Semenya told the BBC. “When you are a great champion, you always deliver.”

But Semenya’s four-year dominance over two laps — Friday’s win was her 30th straight in the 800 continuing a run that started in late 2015 — may now be at an end.

Ended not by another competitor, but by new regulations set to come into effect Wednesday. They require the South African star and other female athletes with high levels of natural testosterone to medically lower them to be eligible to compete in events ranging from 400 meters to the mile.

Semenya failed to overturn those rules in her appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Now, her career appears to be at a crossroads: Does she take medication to lower her testosterone? The medication will likely inhibit her athletic performance and could blunt her dominance. Or does she switch events and run in long-distance races not affected by the regulations?

She was emphatic when she told reporters after Friday’s race that she wouldn’t take the medication.

“That’s an illegal method,” she said.

But Semenya also didn’t give a clear idea of what she would do next. She said she wouldn’t move up to the 5,000 meters and she definitely wouldn’t retire.

“God has decided my career, God will end my career,” she said in the BBC interview. “No man, or any other human, can stop me from running. How am I going to retire when I’m 28? I still feel young, energetic. I still have 10 years or more in athletics.

“It doesn’t matter how I’m going to do it. What matters is I’ll still be here. I am never going anywhere.”

Semenya’s comments may foreshadow an appeal against the CAS ruling, aimed first at allowing Semenya to defend her 800 title at the world championships, also in Doha, in September and October while not taking the hormone-suppressing drugs.

But, if she keeps her promise not to lower her testosterone, there is a chance that Friday was the last time that Semenya runs in the 800, where she is a double Olympic and a three-time world champion, and arguably the best female athlete to run the distance in 40 years.

Her career, however, seems destined to be overshadowed by the testosterone debate, which has the potential for implications far beyond her own results.

Semenya gave away little on the track to indicate it might be her last race at the distance. She raised her right fist when announcers introduced her before the race.

She was presented with a bunch of flowers and tossed them to the crowd at the end. She then gave a thumbs-up to fans, flashed a brief smile, and walked off the track.

Scouted: 6 Women’s Jeans That Won’t Let You Down, No Matter How Many Times You Wear Them

In my opinion, there’s no such thing as owning too many jeans. Jeans are the equalizer of outfits. They can be dressed up or dressed down and there are so many different cuts and styles that they can be worn at practically any occasion. There are so many to choose from, but we’ve narrowed it down to a handful that can satisfy any experience you throw at them.

The Ridge Mom Jean, $ 118 from Mott & Bow: These jeans fit me perfectly. This is not something I take lightly. I am short and have large legs and that means most jeans fit great in the thighs but gap at the waist. These have enough spandex in them that make them comfortably hug my curves without veering into jegging territory.

Cali Demi-Boot Jeans, $ 128 from Madewell: The only time I’ve ever been happy with a pair of petite jeans has been these from Madewell. These are sturdy with a bit of stretch and come in so many different wash options that there’s easily something for anyone. Madewell’s expanded denim program features Petite, Regular, and Tall inseams and goes up to a 37 in the waist.

In 10 Years, Half Of Middle-Income Elders Won’t Be Able To Afford Housing, Medical Care

In 10 years, more than half of middle-income Americans age 75 or older will not be able to afford to pay for yearly assisted living rent or medical expenses, according to a study published Wednesday in Health Affairs.

The researchers used demographic and income data to project estimates of a portion of the senior population, those who will be 75 or older in 2029, with a focus on those in the middle-income range — currently $ 25,001 to $ 74,298 per year for those ages 75 to 84.

And it doesn’t look good for that group because of the rising costs of housing and health care. The researchers estimated that the number of middle-income elders in the U.S. will nearly double, growing from 7.9 million to 14.4 million by 2029. They will make up the biggest share of seniors, at 43%.

By 2029, more than half of the middle-income seniors will have annual financial resources of $ 60,000 or less, even if the equity in their homes is included. Projections put the average annual assisted living and medical expenses cost in 10 years at $ 62,000, meaning that a majority of the middle-income seniors then will not be able to afford an assisted living facility.

Middle-income seniors are a group that Beth Burnham Mace, one of the study’s authors, said has been often overlooked when policymakers and legislators think about housing and care for aging Americans.

“The low-income cohort has been taken care of by tax subsidies, while the high-income cohort is largely self-sufficient. But the middle-income seniors have been ignored,” said Mace, who is chief economist at the National Investment Center for Seniors Housing and Care, a nonprofit research group.

The study’s authors said they are probably underestimating the extent of the looming problem. They projected out-of-pocket medical costs of only $ 5,000 a year for seniors.

Deborah Carr, chairwoman of the department of sociology at Boston University who studies aging, noted that Americans “are able to live longer today than they have in the past because of medical technology.” The downside, said Carr, who was not affiliated with the study, is “if they’re living for years with dementia or mobility issues, then they have to pay longer for medical care for the additional years they live.”

Indeed, the researchers projected that 60% of the middle-income seniors will have mobility limitations, while 20% will be considered “high needs,” meaning they have three or more chronic conditions and one or more limitations in activities of daily living, such as bathing or dressing. Eight percent will have some form of cognitive impairment.

Seniors living with mobility limitations, chronic conditions or cognitive impairment are more likely to need care and support such as that offered by an assisted living facility.

But that’s not a reality for many.

In her written response to the Health Affairs study, Jennifer Molinsky, a senior research associate at the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University, addressed the needs of seniors who decide to stay at home as they age instead of going to an assisted living facility. She said these older Americans face a different set of challenges.

“One of the challenges is that most people don’t live in cities,” Molinsky said in an interview. “And most houses in these areas are single-family detached homes. The infrastructure is not set up for safe walking, so you have to drive. People often give up driving as they age. So these locations can be difficult to provide services to people.”

Molinsky said other issues to consider are making homes more accessible by adding ramps for wheelchairs or wall handles in the shower and the cost of these changes.

The other dire warning of the study: While spouses and middle-age daughters have historically provided the bulk of elder care, that is a less likely option in the future because of changing marriage patterns, lower birth rates and the increasing number of adult children who live far from their parents. Some seniors will need to seek paid care.

The study suggests that policymakers could expand Medicare benefits to include access to a wider range of supportive services, or create a new benefit, “Medicare Part E,” that funds long-term care. However, other attempts to set up such a program have run into resistance among lawmakers because of cost.

While Medicaid is the primary payer of long-term nursing home care, right now the program is available only to low-income seniors. Seniors may become eligible if they impoverish themselves. However, lawmakers could also broaden the Medicaid income eligibility requirements or expand options to include home-based care for those with higher-end incomes.

Some seniors are already turning to creative solutions to address their growing need for affordable housing.

Carr said one innovative option she has seen is the Village to Village Network, a community program that allows seniors to stay in their homes but have access to general support services, such as home repairs, transportation, health care and even social activities.

Co-housing, where seniors share a residence, like in the classic TV show, “Golden Girls,” is another solution, Carr said.

Mace said she hopes the study will spark more conversation between public and private sectors for creative ideas to address the issue of housing the growing number of Americans who will turn 75 or older in the next decade.

Her advice to both those seniors and their children is to openly discuss the issue.

“It is a good idea to sit down and talk about what your plan may be,” said Mace. “Talk about what the financial assets are and the housing options. It’s a worthy topic to talk about, though it can be hard, because it helps to avoid putting both children and parents in difficult situations in the future.”

Issa Rae’s ‘Insecure’ Won’t Be Back for Season Four Until 2020

‘Insecure’ is taking a brief hiatus.

In an interview with Vulture’s Josef Adalian, HBO programming chief Casey Bloys confirmed that Insecure won’t be back for its fourth season until 2020 — because Issa Rae is booked and busy.

via Vulture:

“Well, Issa became a big movie star!” Bloys said of the actress, who’s currently starring in Little alongside Regina Hall and Marsai Martin. “We’re not the first place to deal with this, but when you’re in business with very creative and talented people, there’s a lot more opportunities for people to do things. Issa, I think, partly wanted a break to come back to it fresh.”

The network isn’t burning off Insecure, to be clear: It’s betting it’ll be just as strong, and potentially awards-worthy, when it returns to TV. “It wasn’t exactly random that we ended up [scheduling the show] in the spring, right before Emmys,” Bloys promised, “so that the show should get the Emmy love that it has deserved.”

Bummer.

Say What Now? Developer Creates MAGA App to Help Trump Supporters Find Safe Spaces Where Liberals Won’t Make Fun of Them

If you’re looking to harass a Trump supporter, look no further than a newly-created app 63rd Safe.

Technically, the app was designed to help the pro-MAGA find ‘safe’ spaces in public where they can go without the fear of being ridiculed by liberals — but you could most definitely use it for the opposite.

via Raw Story:

As the Daily Beast reported over the weekend, the new mobile app 63red Safe was designed to help Trump supporters find “MAGA-friendly restaurants” whose owners will not let antifa activists harass them for wearing pro-Trump clothing.

“63red Safe works like a conservative Yelp,” the publication reported. “Instead of reviewing the lighting and ambience, though, the site’s users rate restaurants and other businesses on a series of four questions, including whether the restaurant’s owners make political social-media posts and whether they allow customers to carry weapons.”

Appearing on Fox News, app creator Scott Wallace explained what could get a restaurant or other business branded as “unsafe” for fans of President Donald Trump.

“Users can review the restaurants and businesses, it’s just four quick questions, yes-or-no questions,” he said. “No. 1, does this location serve all customers regardless of political beliefs? Will they protect their customers if they’re under attack by others in the restaurant? There’s the open carry question, and does the location have a political presence in their social media?”

What a joke.

Best places to travel for Spring Break that won’t break the bank

Few events in the yearly calendar are more exciting than Spring Break. For college students everywhere, it’s the time to leave classes behind and party until they can’t party anymore. It’s the last moment of freedom before they have to buckle down and complete their exams, so students rarely hold back when it comes to having fun. Unfortunately, the best Spring Break destinations aren’t always the cheapest. Undergrads aren’t exactly known for having much money, which means finding somewhere affordable to travel to is of the utmost importance.

Cabo San Lucas

Anyone living near, or looking to visit, the West Coast should find all they need at Cabo San Lucas. The gorgeous getaway offers many all-inclusive deals that will ensure you get everything you need without blowing your budget. With so much money saved on accommodation, you’ll be able to enjoy yourself more when you’re out and about. Luckily, the area is super lively, so you’re never short of things to do here, even when your wallet starts to look a little thin.

Myrtle Beach

If you intend to be on the beach during your Spring Break – and why wouldn’t you? – then Myrtle Beach has you covered. 60 miles of coastline means there’s plenty of space for you to do your thing without having to spend a cent. Plus, with some great nightlife options that typically cater to a younger population, you know you and your money will definitely be in good hands here.

Key West

Perhaps not the place that most people would think to visit for Spring Break, it’s lower popularity is exactly why it’s great to visit. Not only are crowds less of an issue, but prices are a lot more affordable. There are plenty of great budget hotels in the area, so accommodation is never a problem either, leaving you more money to spend on having the Spring Break of your life.

New Orleans

No-one does food quite like the South. Eating might not be the top priority on your Spring Break list, but you’ll be wanting something good to fill you up between nights of non-stop partying. New Orleans has plenty of great comfort food on offer to keep you going, and it’s a pretty cheap place to visit too. There are loads of rental deals to help you find somewhere affordable to stay, especially if you don’t mind lodging further away from the center.

Puerto Vallarta

With so many all-inclusive packages available, you’ve got to wonder why you’d have your Spring Break anywhere other than Puerto Vallarta. There are so many rental choices here that make staying in the area cheap and easy, especially if you book in advance. What’s more, with sun, sand, and sea as far as the eye can see, do you really need anything else for your Spring Break vacation?

You don’t get many opportunities to do Spring Break, so it’s important to make the most of each one while you can. Thankfully, you can still do that even if you’re low on funds; you just have to be a bit more picky about where you go to enjoy them.

Sorry, Taika Waititi won’t be directing ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’

TwitterFacebook

Presumably someone will be directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but it won’t be Taika Waititi.

The Thor: Ragnarok director made his position on that one very clear on Monday.

Speaking at FX’s Television Critics Association press event, Waititi denied the rumours that have been circling since last year.

“For me, those are James (Gunn)’s films,” Deadline reports him as saying. “Going into something like that with his stamp all over his films, would be like going into someone’s house and saying ‘Hey, I’m your new dad, and this is how we make peanut butter sandwiches now.’  Read more…

Jussie Smollet Update: Trump Response, Actor Arrived Home With Rope, Won’t Turn Over Phone

CHICAGO (AP) — Detectives have recovered more surveillance footage of “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett walking in downtown Chicago before and after he says he was attacked by two masked men, including video of him arriving home with a rope around his neck, but they’re still searching for footage of the attack, a police spokesman said Thursday.

The video from a surveillance camera at Smollett’s apartment building showing him arrive home with a rope around his neck is part of a larger effort to obtain as much footage as possible of his walk from a Subway restaurant to his apartment at around 2 a.m. Tuesday.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said detectives, who are investigating the case as a possible hate crime, have pieced together more footage from the hundreds of public and private surveillance cameras in that area of downtown Chicago, which is home to many high-end hotels and restaurants. But they still haven’t found video of the attack or the men who match Smollett’s description of the suspects, he said.

Smollett, who is black and gay and plays the gay character Jamal Lyon on the hit Fox television show, said the men beat him, subjected him to racist and homophobic insults, threw an “unknown chemical substance” on him and put a thin rope around his neck before fleeing. He returned to his apartment afterward and his manager called police from there about 40 minutes later, Guglielmi said. When officers arrived, the actor had cuts and scrapes on his face and the rope around his neck. Smollett later went to a hospital for treatment.

Instagram Photo

Guglielmi said there are still many more videos for investigators to collect and go through as they try to get a complete picture of Smollett’s walk home. It is tedious work that is made more difficult because the time stamps on various cameras may not be in sync, meaning detectives have to figure out the exact times of events, he said.

“It’s like putting together a puzzle,” he said.

Guglielmi said Smollett and his manager told detectives they were talking on the phone at the time of the attack, but that the 36-year-old actor declined to turn over his phone records to the detectives, who routinely ask for such information during criminal investigations.

Smollett has not spoken publicly about the attack, but his representative told The Associated Press on Wednesday night that the actor was at home and recovering. Smollett’s family issued a statement through a spokesman Thursday saying the actor was the victim of a “racial and homophobic hate crime” and pushing back against any suggestion that he was anything but truthful with the police.

“Jussie has told the police everything from the very beginning. His story has never changed, and we are hopeful they will find these men and bring them to justice,” the family said.

Police are hoping to identify and talk to two people who were walking in the area at the time of the attack and whose grainy image the department released. Guglielmi stressed that the people are not considered suspects and that police want to question them because they were in the vicinity and might have useful information.

Reports of the attack drew a flood of outrage and support for Smollett on social media. Some of the outrage stemmed from Smollett’s account to detectives that his attackers yelled that he was in “MAGA country,” an apparent reference to the Trump campaign’s “Make America Great Again” slogan.

President Donald Trump, expressed sympathy for Smollett on Thursday.

“That I can tell you is horrible. It doesn’t get worse,” the president told reporters when asked about the matter. The spot where Smollett says he was attacked isn’t far from the Trump International Hotel & Tower.

The FBI is investigating a threatening letter targeting Smollett that was sent last week to the Fox studio in Chicago where “Empire” is filmed, Guglielmi said. The FBI has declined to comment on the investigation.

In addition to his acting career, Smollett has a music career and is a noted activist, particularly on LBGTQ issues. Smollett’s representative said his concert scheduled for Saturday in Los Angeles will go on as planned.

Now in its fifth season, the hourlong drama “Empire” follows an African-American family as they navigate the ups and downs of the record industry. Smollett’s character is the middle son of Empire Entertainment founder Lucious Lyon and Cookie Lyon, played by Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson, respectively.

Chicago has one of the nation’s most sophisticated and extensive video surveillance systems, including thousands of cameras on street poles, skyscrapers, buses and in train tunnels.

Police say the cameras have helped them make thousands of arrests. In one of the best-known examples of the department’s use of the cameras, investigators in 2009 were able to recreate a school board president’s 20-minute drive through the city, singling out his car on a succession of surveillance cameras to help them determine that he committed suicide and had not been followed and killed by someone else, as his friends speculated.

4 Trends You Won’t Want To Miss in 2019

What’s better than feeling good at home and looking forward to relaxing after a hard work day? Every year, new trends emerge, and while not every trend will be for you, they give you an look at the direction that design is heading and new ideas to inspire your own space for a modern look.

Design is constantly evolving and growing so the elements that were in last year will not necessarily be totally out in 2019. Although some trends run out of steam quickly, others will remain anchored in our design conscious for many years to come and become classics in their own right, like all white kitchens for example! If you’re looking for fresh ways to update your decor, here are some of the design features that are popular for 2019.

Biophilia

Green is definitely trendy! Nature represents a soothing solution for the current social ills and we will maximize that soothing feeling with the use of plants, especially those that are exotic. Their bright green glow gives our homes a soothing ambiance, creating a refuge from the invasive technologies we face every day.

Sustainability

In recent years, we have become more aware of our environmental
footprint and are trying to reduce it as much as we can. By opting for local or
recycled materials, it is possible to decorate and renovate in a sustainable
way. On the market, there is an incredible range of greener kitchen countertops
made from recycled materials such as high-pressure
laminate
and composite paper surface. In addition to encouraging
conservation and sustainable ecological design, these options are made from at
least 10% recycled paper and come from an FSC certified source.

There are now hundreds of models with different colors and finishes available. They are very elegant and easy to maintain; the material offers an affordable alternative to marble and tends to keep its luster longer as well.

India Modern

When we think of India, we think the many bright colors and ornamentation associated with traditional Indian clothing. In India Modern design, white is in the spotlight, and it is highlighted with contrasts such as plants and furniture in bright or dark colors. Gold and marble are also in the foreground, while they bring a touch of elegance to the refined decorations.

In 2019, we dare to incorporate saturated colors. We continue to move towards sophisticated but contrasted looks, with white decorations and colorful touches. The base always remains white, such as walls and even furniture, but we opt for colorful accents on unusual elements, such as accent chairs and carpets. We also introduce carved wood elements as well as intricate weaved textures and colored marble to give the design presence and solidity. The goal is not complete harmonized but rather beauty found through elements that are not necessarily arranged with an eccentric touch.

Updated Art Deco

One trend that continues to make a comeback in 2019 is Updated Art Deco, inspired by the 1920s where luxury and purity are omnipresent. Inspired by the Gatbsy years, Updated Art Deco mixes antiques with modern pieces, luxurious finishes in velvet and rich, deep colors. The walls are dressed with works of art and finishes show a nod towards noble materials such as hardwood, marble and brass.

Although classical Art Deco is quite geometrical, Updated Art Deco is more of an invitation to get inspired by style. While geometric patterns are still part of the design scheme, the focus is on luxury and glam.

Richard Blackwood ‘won’t rule out’ EastEnders comeback

OHMYGOSSIP — Richard Blackwood says he would “never rule out” an ‘EastEnders’ return, but he has something else “quite big” coming up soon.
The 46-year-old star may have some more time on his hands after he was eliminated from ‘Dancing on Ice’ last night (20.01.19), but it doesn’t look like he’ll be reprising his role as Vincent Hubbard anytime soon.
He said: “I’ve got a movie coming out, also there’s some other stuff that is huge.
“But ‘EastEnders’, I would never rule it out. They were good to me, so I’ve got love for them.
“But there is something else, which is quite big.”
But Richard admitted he would be prepared to head back to Walford if show bosses gave him a great storyline.
When asked if he would return if the plot was right, he replied: “Of course, absolutely, I’ve got love for them.”
The star was disappointed to exit ‘Dancing on Ice’ on Sunday, and insisted he and his pro skating partner Carlotta Edwards had “a lot more” to give.
He added to ‘Lorraine’: “I don’t believe we were ready to go yet. There was a lot more [to give].
“You could see, the dance, it was very strong.”
Last year, Richard admitted the door was “slightly ajar” about a potential Albert Square return.
He said: “It’s slightly ajar. I can see the guys in there and they’re like, ‘Richard, how’s it going?’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, just checking. We good? My family still there?’
“‘EastEnders’ was really good for me. It’s a fast machine. It taught me you don’t have the luxury of taking the time to overly rehearse.
“It’s very quick but it gets you to that place of landing it straight away and trusting it.
“It’s like a master-class. I’m very fortunate.”

Video Games Won’t Be Part of the Paris Olympics

The Olympic Games regularly add new events, but officials aren’t quite ready to embrace eSports.

This weekend, the International Olympic Committee met for the 7th Olympic Summit, where competitive video gaming was among the topics of discussion. The verdict? It’s still “premature” to discuss including them in the Olympic games.

That’s bound to be disappointing to supporters, who had hoped for a breakthrough in the 2024 Paris games. Tony Estanguet, co-president of the Paris Olympic committee, is a proponent of bringing video games to the Olympics.

Despite initial opposition to eSports, Olympic organizers didn’t entirely shut the door on the idea.

The IOC “agreed that the Olympic Movement should continue to engage with [the eSports] community.” It also said some titles were “not compatible” with the Olympic values, presumably referring to action and shooter games. Explaining, the IOC drew a contrast between how the eSports “industry is commercially driven” as opposed to the “values-based” aim of other sports, a claim that many might find fault with.

Still, the IOC did say it planned to invite stakeholders in the eSports industry to a liaison group, where they would “explore jointly collaborative projects”.

eSports might seem a strange fit in the Olympics, but many of the Olympics most popular events were similarly greeted with skepticism. Snowboarding wasn’t added until 1998. And as the X Games grew in popularity, the Olympics added Big Air aerials and slopestyle skiing.

Five new sports will debut in 2020, some of which, like skateboarding, are designed to appeal to younger demographics. That audience will likely be what ultimately convinces the IOC to add eSports to the games at some point. Viewership for events, both online and on TV, has regularly outpaced that of major traditional sports tournaments.

The IOC also has some time to change its mind. No final decisions about the competition in the Paris Olympics will be made until 2020, after Tokyo’s time with the Games is done.

When is Black Friday 2018?

Black Friday falls on the day following Thanksgiving Day in the United States (which is the fourth Thursday of November). Here the UK, Black Friday 2016 will fall on 23rd November (which is a Friday) so you still have time to bookmark the shops you want to visit and pick out the deals you’re going to go after.

What is Black Friday?

Black Friday is a day when shoppers can take advantage of *huge* discounts from various jewellery retailers. We’re talking loads of money off engagement rings, just in time for a romantic Christmas proposal.

Black Friday Engagement Ring Sales

There is NO SHAME in buying an engagement ring on Black Friday – it’s a big investment, why not save a few quid in the name of a killer honeymoon instead? There’s a number of jewellers getting in on the action from Ernest Jones all the way through to Tiffany’s, so if you’re looking to pick something up for a loved one or really just need someone to take a bloody hint already – we’ve curated our favourite picks this Black Friday.

From classic solitaires to fashion-forward settings, there’s something for every personality above. (We’re not going to lie, we’re particularly in love with the Elise Dray ring.) Make sure you keep us bookmarked and check back in every day, as we’ll be adding new bling every day.

How much to spend on an engagement ring?

We all know that old rule of spending two months’ wages is a bit antiquated, and in fact couples are spending less than ever on engagement rings, especially with the rise of alternative engagement rings. According to Refinery29, the average spend on an engagement ring over the past five years now stands at £1,080 compared to £1,333 spent up to 10 years ago.

How to shop for an engagement ring

As well as the four Cs, Cut, Carat, Clarity and Colour, there are many things you should look out for when buying an engagement ring, including the shape and if you should buy an engagement ring online, luckily we have you covered. Here’s our handy guide on, how to buy an engagement ring online, plus all the questions to ask when choosing an engagement ring – you’re welcome.

Engagement ring trends

According to 77 Diamonds, yellow gold has taken over platinum for engagement rings this year. While platinum was the metal of choice for proposees in 2013-2015, in 2016, white gold came into favour, soon to be replaced by yellow gold in 2017.

In terms of the cut of the diamond, the oval cut diamond was a celebrity favourite in 2013 and 2014, but since then, emerald has been the preferred cut.

And, if proof were needed that size doesn’t matter, people spend more on the quality of the diamond now, than they do on the size.

But it’s not all about diamond engagement rings, as other metals and stones have become increasingly popular. Kate Middleton’s sapphire and diamond engagement ring sparked demand for similar styles, while pink diamonds and rose gold bands are top of many a wish list.

Pandora black Friday engagement ring sales

Pandora may be known for its charm bracelets, but they have a great selection of rings too. Though they’re not diamond rings, their designs include sparkling Cubic Zirconia that look like the real deal, and all for under £100, they’re great if you’re on a budget, or if you’d like to buy a ‘dummy’ ring for the proposal and pick a more expensive style together later.

There are some timeless silver solitaire rings, and pretty rose gold cushion diamond rings with eternity bands. Scroll down for our pick of the best Black Friday deals on Pandora engagement rings.

The Bombs Sent to Democrats Are an Act of Terror. Why Won’t Trump Say It?

Kevin Lamarque/Reuters

Terrorism is terrorism, just as a bomb is a bomb, no matter how big or how small.

But where Donald Trump has always been quick to tweet about acts of Islamic terrorism, he was notably slow to comment after pipe bombs were sent to George Soros and then the Clintons and then the Obamas.

And when he finally did have something to say on Wednesday afternoon, he did not call it terrorism. He initially only retweeted a statement by Vice President Pence condemning “these cowardly acts” as “despicable… with no place in this country.”

259 people have died taking selfies – but that won’t stop anyone from taking risks to get that perfect snap

Vanity is killing us.

A man in Maryland narrowly avoided death Sunday after falling into the Potomac River while trying to snap a selfie in front of wild floodwaters. He was thankfully saved by onlookers, but accidents and deaths by selfie are far from rare.

NYPD Detective Told Weinstein’s Alleged Victim to Delete Messages: ‘We Just Won’t Tell’ D.A.

Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast

The former lead detective in the Harvey Weinstein sexual-assault investigation told a woman who accused the movie mogul of rape to delete messages and data from multiple cell phones before giving them to prosecutors, according the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.

The alleged victim did not delete the messages and alerted her attorney because she felt uncomfortable with the request, according to a letter the D.A.’s office was required to send Weinstein’s attorney and file in court. The letter was released publicly on Wednesday afternoon.

The woman, identified only as “Complainant 2,” is the subject behind three of the mogul’s five counts of sex-related offenses: predatory sexual assault, rape in the first degree, and rape in the third degree. Her accusations stem from an incident that allegedly took place in Weinstein’s hotel room in Manhattan on March 18, 2013.

Why Kate Middleton won’t accept gifts during royal visits

It’s pretty important

Words by Jadie Troy-Pryde

We’re pretty clued up when it comes to all things royal. From what goes on behind the scenes Buckingham Palace, to following protocol, we’d say we’re in the know when it comes to their very interesting secrets.

For example, did you know that the Queen has banned this ingredient from the royal kitchens? Or why Meghan Markle often wears black for official duties?

And then there’s the real reason that Prince William and Kate Middleton don’t hold hands in public, but Meghan and Prince Harry do.

But just when you thought you knew all there was to know, we’ve got another nugget of royal wisdom for you.

Kate Middleton won’t accept gifts from members of the public during royal visits.

Why?

REX

The Duchess of Cambridge recently returned to work five months after giving birth to her third child, Prince Louis. Earlier this week, she attended Sayers Croft Forest School and Wildlife Garden in Maida Vale, London, where she met local school children – and had the sweetest answer when one asked by one child why the photographers were taking snaps of her.

However, royal protocol states that when it comes to receiving presents things can get pretty complicated.

The Royal Family website reads: “Gifts offered by private individuals living in the UK not personally known to the Member of the Royal Family should be refused where there are concerns about the propriety or motives of the donor or the gift itself.”

Reportedly, the royals are only allowed to keep hold of gifts sent by the public if their value is less than £150, and items like flowers and certain foods are permitted.

According to the BBC, all gifts must be used by the Royal Family, used for displays, or given to charity or members of staff.

Just imagine the number of teddy bears they must have collected over the years…

A bunch of birds in Minnesota won’t stop getting drunk, and it’s becoming a problem

drunk birds

Most of us know what it’s like to have one too many adult beverages. We tend to mess things up, fall down, and cause problems in a variety of ways. When birds get drunk, they apparently do the exact same thing, and Minnesota residents are experiencing it firsthand.

As CBS Minnesota reports, the town of Gilbert is dealing with an influx of inebriated birds due to an early frost. The birds, which get drunk on fermented berries, are becoming something of a nuisance and have even caught the attention of local law enforcement.
