Sex Workers Aren’t Buying Kamala Harris’ New Tune: She ‘Put Our Country Many Years Behind’

Noah Berger/Getty

During a Thursday night event at The Wing titled “Unpacking Sex Work Stigma & Intersectional Feminism,” a panel of sex workers and activists talked about the deadly aftermath of FOSTA/SESTA and recent pushes toward decriminalizing sex work.

Sen. Kamala Harris recently told The Root that, “We can’t criminalize consensual behavior as long as no one is being harmed.” But Harris’s stated support of decriminalization hasn’t been fully embraced by the sex working community. The organizer of the panel at The Wing, who asked to be identified by the name of the platform that she founded, @SXNOIR, explained to the audience that, “Kamala isn’t talking about decrim the way that we’re talking about decrim.”

There has been concern that Harris is not calling for full decriminalization, but for a system inspired by the Nordic Model, which criminalizes individuals who purchase sex. Gizelle Marie, the leader of the NYC Stripper Strike, shared her experience attempting to lobby at Harris’s office during International Whore’s Day. “She didn’t want to speak to us, obviously,” Marie recalled. “She had one of her assistants just writing down notes and stuff…The fact that she’s actually trying to speak up about sex work now is kind of strange.”

California Leaders Address Shortage of Mental Health Workers

Today, the California Future Health Workforce Commission issued its findings on the growing shortage of health care workers in California, including mental health professionals, in the face of steadily increasing demands for health care services throughout the state.

Formed in 2017, the commission is composed of a statewide group of senior leaders representing health, education, employment, labor, and government. They are tasked with identifying opportunities for the health workforce to further meet the changing needs of the state’s diverse population.

“One of the wisest things that the commission did at the outset was make the decision to focus on three priority areas: mental health, healthy aging, and primary care,” said Pat Courneya, MD, commission member and chief medical officer for National Health Plan and Hospitals Quality at Kaiser Permanente.

“In particular, mental health presents an incredible challenge,” Dr. Courneya said. “The demand for effective mental health services is growing continuously and the supply of well-trained mental health workers who reflect the populations we’re trying to serve is just not up to the demand.”

According to the Commission’s findings, nearly 17 percent of Californians have mental health needs, and 1 in 20 has a serious mental health condition. Among those, about two-thirds of California adults with a mental illness and two-thirds of adolescents with major depressive episodes do not receive the treatment they need.

At the same time, the Commission projects that over the next decade California will have 41 percent fewer psychiatrists and 11 percent fewer psychologists, marriage and family therapists, clinical counselors, and social workers than needed.

Kaiser Permanente has recognized this workforce challenge for some time and is deeply committed to providing quality mental health care for its members. Despite this shortage in California, Kaiser Permanente has increased the number of therapists on its staff by 30 percent since 2015. Kaiser Permanente also is helping to address the shortage through training programs at its medical centers for postdoctoral residents and post-master’s fellows. The ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) has accredited two new Kaiser Permanente Adult Psychiatry residency programs, in the East Bay and San Jose medical centers, starting in 2019. This demonstrates the organization’s commitment to educating and training a full array of mental health clinicians for the future. And, the Kaiser Permanente School of Medicine, now under construction, will incorporate a comprehensive mental health curriculum for new physicians.

At the same time, Kaiser Permanente invested more than $ 175 million in 2018 to expand and enhance treatment facilities specifically designed to provide mental health care. To make care convenient and accessible, the organization has doubled the number of its mental health tele-visits since 2016 and is making it possible for members to receive mental health care throughout Kaiser Permanente by embedding mental health professionals in primary care offices, emergency departments, and community settings.

Kaiser Permanente still has work to do to continue providing members access to the mental health care they need.

As Dr. Courneya affirmed, “We — health care leaders, lawmakers, citizens, and educators — need to come together to tackle this issue, as the commission recommends, to put us on the right path to recruit, train, and retain more psychiatrists, psychologists, and other mental health workers who reflect the populations we serve.”

Kaiser Permanente has some of the best and brightest minds in health care. With its employees and physicians’ teamwork, dedication, and leadership, the organization can continue to address this growing challenge and lead the way in delivering high-quality, affordable care for total health — mind, body, and spirit.

8 Side Gigs for Federal Workers Affected by the Government Shutdown

There’s no need to state the obvious here, especially if you’re a government employee.

The government has been shut down for more than a month, and many federal workers have now missed their second paycheck. Thousands have applied for unemployment, according to The New York Times and, while idle, many seek side gigs.

During this time, it’s difficult to know what to do. If you’re working without pay, you have little time to look for income elsewhere. If you’re furloughed, who’s going to hire you knowing you could leave to take your government job back at any time? But you need the income.

Although a side gig — or even two or three — won’t necessarily replace your lost or delayed income, it can help offset some of these challenges. It’s temporary work that pays relatively quickly.

Here are a few ideas to get you started.

1. Take on Freelance Assignments

You’ve got skills, so flaunt them.

Upwork is a great platform if you’re just wading into the freelance world.

Once you create a profile, search through thousands of gigs based on your skills and interests. If you find one you’re interested in, apply.

One of the perks of Upwork is that it handles all financial transactions, eliminating any unease or questions of, “Will they really pay me?!” Upwork takes a 20% fee for the first $ 500 you bill with each client.

Fiverr is another freelance platform you can check out if you don’t have luck on Upwork.

2. Share Your Spare Room (or Couch) With Travelers

If you have a spare room, you might as well try to earn some money by listing it on Airbnb.

If you’re a good host with a desirable space, you could earn enough money to offset the cost of rent or mortgage payments.

And, hey, even if you don’t have a spare room, you can get in on the Airbnb action. Folks across the country are getting creative.

A few simple steps can make the difference between a great experience and a less-than-satisfactory one. We talked to Terence Michael, an Airbnb superhost based in Los Angeles.

Here are some of his tips:

  • Break out the labelmaker. “I have the entire house loaded with labels,” says Michael. “They look nice; they’re modern. This helps people feel less helpless.”
  • Be a good host, and stock your place with the toiletries you’d expect at a hotel — toilet paper, soap and towels. Here’s a little hack from Michael: “I order on Amazon and have it delivered when people are there.”
  • Be kind to your neighbors. “I say, ‘I’m not going to put anyone here who I think won’t be good for you,’” Michael explains. “And I turn a lot of big groups away, especially in Nashville. I don’t want anyone going to the cops or the city.”

(Hosting laws vary from city to city. Please understand the rules and regulations applicable to your city and listing.)

3. Drive People Around Town

Instead of watching your car sit idly in the driveway, use it to make some extra money. No, it’s not going to replace your paycheck, but it is a fairly simple side gig.

Try driving with Lyft. To be eligible, you’ll need to be at least 21 years old with a year of driving experience, pass a background check and own a car made in 2007 or later.

Because it’s simple to switch between apps, many Lyft drivers also sign up as a driver partner with Uber.

As a partner driver with Uber, you’re an independent contractor. You set your own schedule and work as much or as little as you want.

If you want to give it a try, here are a few things to keep in mind: You must be at least 21 years old, have at least one year of licensed driving experience in the U.S. (three years if you’re under 23 years old), have a valid U.S. driver’s license and pass a background check.

Finally, your car must be a four-door, seat at least four passengers (excluding the driver), be registered in-state and be covered by in-state insurance.

4. Let off Some Steam, and Hang out With Dogs

If you’re totally stressed but love hanging out with dogs, Rover might be your perfect gig.

The online network connects dog walkers and sitters to local dog owners through its 4.9-star-rated app, so you don’t have to staple flyers on every utility pole across town.

Rover says sitters can earn as much as $ 1,000 a month.

Rover dog-sitter requirements vary by location. In general, you must:

  • Be 18 years or older.
  • Pass a background check.
  • Have access to the Rover app (iOS or Android).

Here’s how it works: You’ll create an online sitter profile where you’ll answer questions about your experience with puppers and your schedule availability.

You can choose to offer a variety of services, including dog walking, overnight boarding at your home or theirs, and daycare. Boarding is the app’s most popular service, so offering it can get you more gigs. You set your own rates. (Rover keeps a small percentage as a service fee.)

Dog owners will reach out to you. Accept which gigs you want, then start snugglin’ pups. As soon as you complete a service, you’ll be paid within two days.

5. Shop and Bag Groceries (No Need to Deliver)

Sure, there are a number of grocery delivery services out there (think: Shipt, PeaPod), but if you’re not into the idea of driving your car around town, there’s another option:

Instacart, a grocery-delivery service, is looking for part-time in-store shoppers who simply shop and bag orders.

To qualify, you must:

  • Be 18 or older.
  • Be eligible to work in the U.S.
  • Have access to an iPhone 5 or Android 4.4 (or newer).
  • Be able to lift 30 to 40 pounds.

You choose the hours you work (up to 29 hours a week) and get paid per order weekly. Rates will vary by location.

If you want to get real adventurous (or work more hours) you can also sign on as a full-service shopper, meaning you’ll deliver the groceries, too.

Once you sign up to become a shopper, Instacart will reach out about an orientation.

6. Help With Odd Jobs

If you’re handy, consider helping your neighbors out with odd jobs around the house.

Rather than going door to door, connect with people in your area who need help getting things done through TaskRabbit — anything from picking up dry cleaning to putting together Ikea furniture.

Keep an eye out for virtual tasks, which are mostly centered around personal assistance, administrative work or research help. You can do those and earn money without even walking out your door.

7. Find Nannying Gigs

Parents, oldest siblings and former camp counselors: This one’s for you.

Whether you want to look after school-aged kids on Saturday nights or help tired parents after school, you can find opportunities to use your childcare experience to earn cash.

Look within your circle of friends and acquaintances first, as parents are more likely to trust someone they know. Ask friends if they know anyone else who could use a few hours to themselves, whether it’s to grocery shop or simply to head to the gym.

You can also let parents find you through Care.com. Rates on the platform will vary by city, but the average rate for babysitters in 2017 was $ 16.20 an hour, according to Care.com’s 2018 Cost of Care Survey.

8. Sell Your Plasma

If you’re not afraid of needles, you could consider selling your plasma. It’s a way to get paid, and it also helps others in need.

The process takes about two hours, but it’s relatively simple. You’re free to read or watch TV while a machine draws your blood and separates the plasma.

It’s common for plasma donation centers to pay between $ 20 and $ 30 per visit, up to twice a week.

Interested? Search “plasma center + [your city]” for options, and ask your friends for referrals — many centers offer referral sign-up bonuses.

Freelancers, Remote Workers and Entrepreneurs: Here’s How to Find a Mentor

When people ask Kristi Porter for business advice, she first tells them to find a mentor.

Porter is the “chief do-gooder” at Signify, an Atlanta-based business specializing in marketing for nonprofit and for-profit organizations helping specific causes. Over the years leading up to and after the launch of her company in 2016, she sought the guidance of several mentors on how to set up her website and run her own business.

For freelancers, entrepreneurs and people who work independently, she says, it can be easy to fall into the trap of thinking they have to do everything by themselves. But that’s not the case. Mentors can be a support system offering guidance on overcoming the hurdles preventing your business from improving.

“It’s just great knowing that you’re not doing it alone,” she says. “Having outside perspectives and voices help[s] you get through the good and bad times.”

So having a mentor can be beneficial, but how do you find one if you’re a freelancer, an entrepreneur or someone who works from home? To find out, we ask some experts what to do when finding a mentor.

Full-Time Remote Worker? Make Yourself Visible

Not reporting to a central office can make finding a mentor seem impossible. That’s why Brie Reynolds, senior career specialists at FlexJobs, encourages remote workers to be as visible as possible. You can get on your co-workers’ and your boss’s radar by sending weekly job-related updates and setting times to chat about things other than work.

By making time to reach out and get to know your remote co-workers via instant messaging programs, phone or email, you’ll start to build a solid rapport. Those people may develop into potential mentors or point you toward someone who’s a better fit.

“Finding a mentor is ultimately about building a relationship with somebody, so you have to start at a small level,” Reynolds says.

Leverage Your Networks

Kristi Porter works from home in Atlanta, GA, on November 21, 2018.

According to Porter, one of the easiest ways for people to find a mentor is by letting their personal and professional networks know that they’re searching for one.

When the Atlanta-based nonprofit Plywood People introduced its new community manager, Porter seized the opportunity. She asked if the manager knew anyone with expertise in running an online business.

Within a day or two, the manager responded and set up an introduction with someone who she thought might be a great match. The recommended person ended up becoming a mentor to Porter. Over their yearlong mentor-mentee relationship, Porter learned the technical side of setting up an online business.

“Sometimes it’ about being bold and putting the ‘ask’ out there, and letting people know rather than continuing the hunt on your own,” she says.

Attend Professional Networking Events

During her days working as a restaurant sales manager, Beth Lawrence was regularly attending industry and non-industry-specific networking events around Philadelphia.

But after a layoff, she decided to become an entrepreneur and open her own event planning and marketing company, Beth Lawrence LLC. This time she wanted to seek out business groups featuring people going through similar situations.

Now she attends networking events aimed at helping female entrepreneurs and freelancers from different industries. “I just always find that I really learn a lot from people who aren’t necessarily in my same profession,” she says. At these events, she was able to develop new skills and get her business-related questions answered in a group setting.

It was at these networking events she found one of her mentors, an attorney. Despite not being in the same industry or having a similar career path, Lawrence always sought her advice when making major career decisions.

She says if you’re a freelancer or entrepreneur considering attending a networking event for the first time, go with a friend. By going with a friend, someone you know or a group member, it’s easier to make casual in-person introductions. “At the end of the day, a warm introduction is way better than a cold email or cold call,” she says.

Consider Creating an Accountability Group

When looking for potential mentors, Reynolds says, you don’t have to stick to the traditional mentor-mentee relationship. Try lateral relationships to start.

“I think sometimes people hear ‘mentor’ and think that it has to be this very formalized relationship, but it doesn’t have to be that way,” she says. “It can really be even just a couple of freelancers who are at the same level helping each other out.”

Porter says accountability partners — or mentor groups — are peers who are in the trenches with you. These are often fellow freelancers or entrepreneurs all working on their personal businesses who are willing to lend you a hand when needed. Her accountability partner’s background is in selling physical products online, but Porter’s is in service-based business.

While working together in person is one way to hold these accountability or mentor groups, Reynolds says there is no specific format when structuring these relationships. They can be done in person or with email chains and instant messaging threads. She says, “It really just depends on what you are all comfortable working on.”

How Do You Ask Someone to Be Your Mentor?

Kristi Porter poses for a portrait against a backdrop of fall leaves.

After all the networking, email exchanges and coffee dates, if you see someone as a potential mentor, all you need to do is ask.

It doesn’t have to be something incredibly formal. When Porter asked her mentor if she wanted to take the role 10 years ago, it was done via email following a coffee meeting. Porter recalls they both hit it off so well that she decided to be bold and ask.

“I know a lot of people in high-level positions are willing to give back in some capacity and do want to share what they’ve learned,” she says. When Porter’s mentor opened the email, she was flattered. “She thought, ‘Yeah, this is something I can do. I like you and want to see you succeed,’” Porter remembers.

But if a potential mentor isn’t willing to take you under their wing, don’t worry. Porter tells freelancers and entrepreneurs to be patient when searching for the right person.

“It sometimes takes quite a while to find these people, so don’t give up, keep trying,” she says. “Once you find somebody that works with you, it’s a really great partnership and you’ll be so glad that you waited.”

10 great pubs, chosen by Santa and other Christmas workers

From a turkey farmer to a choirmaster, we ask the people who help make Christmas special where they go for a festive pint or two

Sarah Mitchell, assistant manager at the Churchill Arms, Britain’s ‘most festive pub’
Every Christmas the Churchill is decorated with loads of Christmas trees and lights. In 2016 we got a lot of media coverage in the UK and abroad, so suddenly everyone was talking about us as the most festive pub in the country. This year we have 95 trees; inside the walls are draped with lights and we play Christmas songs on a loop. I love it, but I think some staff get sick of hearing Mariah Carey 20 times a day. The pub we all head to after work is the Mall Tavern, two minutes away. It’s completely different to the Churchill – we are a cosy, traditional pub with a fire, whereas the Mall is a craft-beer gastropub with 20 beers and ales to choose from. At the moment they have a beer and burger pop-up with a choice of about five burgers.
71 Palace Gardens Terrace, London W8, themallw8.com, open 24 Dec midday-10.30pm, closed 25th and 26th. The Churchill (119 Kensington Church Street) is open 24 Dec from 11am-midnight, 25th noon-2pm (drinks only), 26th 11am-11pm
