Trust me when I say you’ll want to get in on this ugly shoe trend

Move over Birkenstock, there’s a new ugly shoe in town. Teva.

hiking sandals

We’ll always have a soft spot for Birkenstocks, especially the faux-fur lined ones (literally the comfiest thing ever), but there’s no denying the shoe of the summer season is the new normcore hiking sandal, aka the ugly sandal, inspired by the Teva sandal.

A natural extension of this winter’s dad trainers and hiking boot trends, it’s part sporty sandal mixed with a chunky rubber sole. Basically the flat shoe your Dad wears on holiday, but this time around it’s totally upgraded to fash pack status.

Following Balenciaga’s hit Triple S trainer of 2017, chunkier styles have become more and more popular, and designers have been showcasing their take on the trend on their SS catwalk (look to Marc Jacobs, Chanel, Chloe, Fendi and Prada for lust-worthy styles).

IRL, they were first spotted on the feet of the stylish Scandi set at Copenhagen Fashion Week, and have quickly filtered through to our shores. Last summer, we were coveting Monikh’s Chanel velcro sandals – and this season we’re into her Prada ones, and Kia Marie’s pastel Tevas.

There are so many styles to choose from this season, from the more minimal black Teva, to some with chunky flatform soles, primary colours, touches of neon and the all important velcro straps. Prada and Kurt Geiger also have some jazzy sequin and diamante styles.

The best thing about this trend is that it totally doesn’t compromise on comfort, and it’s the best way to off-set a floral dress, as demonstrated by Monikh, or a linen suit like the ones favoured by Hannah Crosskey.

Want a more casual vibe? Try a simple pair of jeans and a tank top, as seen on Jessie Bush. So get yourself pedi ready and embrace the cool comfort of the new ugly sandal. Shop our favourite styles below.

You’ll never guess who the new face of L’Oréal Paris is…

loreal paris celine dion

Céline Dion, everyone’s favourite diva, has been named the newest L’Oréal Paris spokesperson and we are all for it.

The five-time Grammy award winner joins the impressive, and not to mention diverse, line up of brand ambassadors that L’Oréal Paris have always advocated. In comparison to other well-know household brands, L’Oréal Paris have always championed the use of older women in their campaigns; Jane Fonda, Helen Mirren, Julianne Moore to name a few, and Dion joins the roll call at the age of 51.

loreal paris celine dion

L’Oréal Global Brand President, Pierre-Emmanuel Angelogiou, explains why Dion is the perfect fit: ‘Signing Céline Dion as the newest member of the L’Oreal Paris family builds our mission of aligning with spokeswomen who are strong, self-empowered, assertive, diverse and inclusive. Céline Dion is a woman of innate self-worth – following her heart to achieve success, challenge stereotypes and trailblaze the path for so many other women – and fully embodies our brand mission of ‘Because I’m Worth it.”

Dion, who famously does her own makeup for appearances, has been using the brand for years, ‘I really see L’Oréal Paris beyond beauty products, beyond colors, beyond care. You feel confident, whatever your achievement is. You feel feminine and empowered, expressing your inner strength. All of this means we are worth it. We need to give ourselves the credit we deserve.’

loreal paris celine dion

Her L’Oréal Paris partnership comes as she concludes her hit Las Vegas show, where she has been performing for eight years. ‘When you think I’m done, I’m just starting,’ Dion said in an interview with L’Oréal. ‘I’ve never felt so beautiful, strong, and I feel that the best is yet to come. Today is the beginning of the rest of my life and I don’t want to go back in time, I am going forward.’

You can catch Dion’s first TV advert on 22nd April, when it premieres worldwide. She kicks off this next chapter as the face of Excellence Hair Colour.

College Is For Suckas? You’ll Never Guess How Much Money Amber Rose Makes Off Instagram

amber rose talks personal finance

Source: Axelle/Bauer-Griffin / Getty

The government shutdown had plenty of people considering new career paths with Uber and other creative ways to get by without a regular direct deposit occurring. One person that was clearly unaffected by Trump’s massive temper tantrum is Instagram favorite Amber Rose. The 35-year-old who was once Kanye West’s muse before he drank the Kardashian Kool-Aide recently sat down with Van Lathan as a guest on his podcast “The Red Pill.” Rose who is also affectionately known as “MUVA” shared with Lathan that thanks to Instagram she’s booked and busy and her bank account has no worries.

So how much money does MUVA make in a year? The blonde beauty shared that endorsements for flat tummy teas and popular clothing company, FashionNova as well as other collaborations bring in about a cool $ 2 million per year.

“Probably like $ 2 million a year, just off Instagram.”

While she isn’t exactly living check to check, she did point out that the payout was modest for a social media influencer:

“There’s girls that make more than $ 2 million a year, I make $ 2 million on Instagram a year.”

Like many of us, Lathan took a moment to highlight the millennial student loan-debt struggle sarcastically noting how some went to “college and bought into that bullsh*t, and Amber’s making $ 2 million off Instagram. Wow!” It’s also reported that Rose pocketed $ 4 million from an emoji app she launched in 2014. But MUVA maintains that while she’s been blessed in many ways, ultimately, she feels like the money moves are a result of her being a good person more than anything else:

“I feel like I made it this far by being a really good person.”

“I’m good to everyone I’m around. I treat everyone the same whether it’s a waitress or a driver or anybody. I take care of my team. I’m just a cool, down-home Philly chick.”

As much as I’m inspired by this tale of God’s favor for the fortuitous, I must say that I know plenty of “nice” women who treat those around them with respect that are still playing musical bills every month with their paychecks trying to see how they’re going to pay car insurance AND tuition for their kids. Are we really going to sit here and act like money falls from the sky simply because you acknowledged your Uber driver? Furthermore, as much as I applaud Amber Rose taking making the most out a few minutes of fame (I wouldn’t know who she was had it not been for Kanye), I would really appreciate it if many of these celebs were a little bit more honest about the connections that got them this far in the first place, but I digress.

You can watch Amber Rose discuss coins and congeniality, her thoughts on R. Kelly and her humble beginnings below at around the 1:20:00 mark:

Studies Say This Will Actually Make You Work Out (And You’ll Get Paid!)

It’s so hard to make yourself exercise consistently. So many mornings, so many evenings, the last thing you want to do is hit the gym or ride an exercise bike.

That’s why so few of us do it. Only about half of all Americans get enough exercise to see any health benefits from it, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control.

Since we’re so short on willpower, what can motivate us to work out?

Try cold, hard cash.

Cash money.

Dollar, dollar bills, y’all.

Money is a surprisingly effective way to make yourself exercise, according to a bunch of recent studies.

Research Backs It Up

Researchers keep finding that financial incentives lead people to exercise more regularly:

  • A study published in The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology medical journal found that people walked more steps per week when given a financial incentive. The study included 800 office workers in Singapore. People tended to walk 30 minutes more per day if they were awarded $ 30 whenever they walked at least 70,000 steps per week.
  • In a study in the journal Translational Behavioral Medicine, researchers from Stanford University and the University of Michigan tracked 12,000 people insured by Blue Care Network, which allows obese policyholders to choose between exercising or paying 20% more in premiums. Researchers found that 97% of them managed to take at least 5,000 steps per day.
  • In a yearlong weight-loss study, researchers at the Mayo Clinic found that participants who were shooting for a small monthly payout (just $ 20) lost more weight than those who weren’t.

Getting Paid to Lose Weight

We know a way to make this work for you. If you’re looking for some monetary inspiration, there are some apps you could check out.

We like one called HealthyWage, which will pay you to accomplish your weight-loss goals.

Enter how much weight you’d like to lose (10 to 150 pounds) in its calculator, how long you’ll take (six to 18 months) and how much you want to bet ($ 20 to $ 150 per month).

Each month, you pay your promised amount into the program. In return, HealthyWage provides support through expert advice and weight-tracking tools.

If you stick to your goal and lose the weight you say you’re going to, the company pays you. It’s as simple as that.

If you don’t hit your goal, your money goes to support HealthyWage, including prizes for others who achieve their goals.

Teresa Suarez bet $ 125 per month she would lose 60 pounds in six months. She lost 68 pounds — and made over $ 2,400.

You’ll Soon Be Able To Buy Bitcoin at the Grocery Store

Bitcoin might not be the red hot commodity it was a year ago, but it’s taking its biggest step yet toward the mainstream world.

Coinstar, whose machines are found in supermarkets across the country and help people get rid of their spare change, has announced plans to let people convert cash into Bitcoin.

“Coinstar is always looking for new ways to offer value to our consumers when they visit our kiosks, and Coinme’s innovative delivery mechanism along with Coinstar’s flexible platform makes it possible for consumers to easily purchase Bitcoin with cash,” said Jim Gaherity, Coinstar CEO, in a statement.

Don’t count on using spare quarters, dimes and pennies in this case, though. Bitcoin via Coinstar can only be purchased with paper money (as much as $ 2,500). Investors will go to one of the company’s participating machines and select the “Buy Bitcoin” option on the screen, entering their phone number.

After inserting however much they want to spend, they’ll receive a voucher with a redemption code, which they can enter on a Coinstar operated Website.

Coinstar has 20,000 machines around the world and has become the de facto place for people to get rid of their jugs of spare change. It’s not clear right now how many of those will sell Bitcoin, however.

Bitcoin could use the boost. After seeing prices crash most of last year, the cryptocurrency is currently selling for about $ 3,600, well off of its December 2017 highs of $ 19,783. Supporters are hoping for a rebound this year.

Plenty of people know when they’ve had a few too many, and they do the responsible thing by letting someone else drive them home. In the age of Uber and Lyft, there’s no excuse whatsoever for getting behind the wheel of a car when you’re drunk. Of course some people have a few drinks and think that they’re sober enough to drive, and those borderline cases are the ones that get responsible people in trouble. Thankfully, there are now tools at our disposal that completely remove guesswork from the equation. The BACtrack C8 Personal Breathalyzer is small enough to fit in your pocket and it has the same type of accurate sensor used by law enforcement. This model also have a fantastic extra feature though: It gives you the approximate amount of time it’ll take before you’ll be sober again.

Apple’s New Models Are Here. That Means You’ll Get Great Deals on Used Ones

It’s the second most wonderful time of the year: new iPad and MacBook season! (The first obviously being new iPhone season.)

Since Apple unveiled the iPhone XS and iPhone XR in September, we’ve been waiting with bated breath for the next generation of iPad Pro, MacBook Air and Mac Mini.

Well, that day has come, and it means one thing to Penny Hoarders: deals on gently used and refurbished Apple products.

That’s right. Those of us who don’t care about having the latest and greatest tech can catch some great deals on upgrading our slow-as-molasses MacBooks and first-generation iPad Bricks.

How to Find Deals on Used Apple Laptops, iPads and More

But before you buy the first MacBook you find in an unmarked van, there are some simple but important steps you need to follow if you want to avoid the duds and get yourself a deal.

1. Know Where to Look

New Apple products are never cheap, so most people will try to sell their old models on sites like Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist or OfferUp, because it’s where they can make the most money.

If you meet a seller one-on-one, always meet in a public place, like a police station or Starbucks. You should feel safe, and there should be other people around.

You can find deals at pawn shops or online trade-in shops like Gazelle. If you want to buy from Apple, you’ll start to notice newer models on its “certified refurbished” page. As of this writing, you can find refurbished MacBook Air models made as recently as June 2017.

2. Research the Product You Want

Carmen Mandato/ The Penny Hoarder

There’s no store associate to guide your Craigslist journey. You’ll need to do your own research on what you want, what you don’t need and what’s a fair price for it.

There are some great guides online that can help you decide between Apple’s lineup of MacBooks, iPads, Apple Watches, etc.

Ultimately, you’ll probably have to be a little flexible on your desired specs if you want the best deal. But who knows, you could get lucky.

3. Test It Out

This is the single most important part of buying used or refurbished Apple products. On sites like Facebook Marketplace, you should always try before you buy. If you’re buying online, always get a warranty and try all these features ASAP:

  • Turn the device on and off.
  • Test the camera.
  • Test the sound.
  • Test internet connectivity and browsing.
  • Test the ports with a USB drive, headphones, etc.
  • Check out the tightness of the hinge.

You’ll also want to make sure the model and specs listed are accurate by checking the serial number on the product.

4. Make a Call (or Two)

Give Apple a call to see if the product you’re buying is refurbished or has been reported stolen. You’ll find suggestions online to call Apple store customer service at 800-676-2775 to find out if your product is refurbished.

When I tried it with a laptop I purchased recently, the customer service representative couldn’t answer my question, but he was able to talk to someone who could confirm my laptop wasn’t refurbished. So be persistent, even if the first person you talk to doesn’t know what you want.

You may also want to call the local police station to make sure the serial number doesn’t match with an item that’s been reported stolen.

5. Make Sure the Product Is Restored and Removed From Account

Alexandra Vincent/The Penny Hoarder

Once you’ve decided you want to buy the product, it’s your responsibility to make sure the product is restored to factory settings.

If you’re purchasing an iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch or even an iPod Touch, you’ll also need to make sure the seller removes the product from their Apple account so that you’ll be able to add it to yours.

6. Don’t Bring Cash

And finally, never bring big wads of cash to a one-on-one sale. If you’re buying anything that costs more than a couple hundred dollars, get a free money order from Amscot.

Pro tip: If you want to negotiate the price, get multiple money orders so you’re not tied down to the asking price.
