Again named one of America’s 50 best companies for Latinas

Kaiser Permanente’s efforts to create a diverse workforce and an inclusive workplace have again placed us among the best U.S. employers for Latinas.

The integrated health care organization and its programs are highlighted in the LATINA Style 50 Report, a respected analysis of corporate America’s efforts to promote diversity and provide career advancement opportunities for Latinas. LATINA Style ranked Kaiser Permanente number 19, an increase from last year’s ranking of number 23. Kaiser Permanente has made the LATINA Style 50 Report 7 times since 2009.

“We are honored to receive this recognition once again for Kaiser Permanente’s ongoing commitment to creating career advancement opportunities for our Latina employees and leaders,” said Ronald Copeland, MD, FACS, senior vice president and chief equity, inclusion, and diversity officer at Kaiser Permanente. “Part of this commitment is ensuring our employees reflect the diversity of the communities we serve, which is critical to our success in providing the highest quality care and service to our members and communities.”

One of the ways Kaiser Permanente provides professional development programs and resources for its Latina employees is through the Kaiser Permanente Latinx Association, one of 10 business resource groups active in the organization. LATINA Style recognized KPLA last year as a “Top 20 Employee Resource Group of the Year.” KPLA offers employees a range of personal and professional development opportunities, including mentoring, networking, career development trainings, volunteerism, scholarships, and more.

“Our longstanding presence on the LATINA Style 50 demonstrates the importance Kaiser Permanente places on supporting equity, inclusion, and diversity among our workforce and community,” said KPLA Northern California co-chair Michelle Linares. “This includes KPLA’s critical role in attracting, inspiring, and supporting our Latinx employees to achieve their full potential at all levels in the organization.”

LATINA Style annually evaluates over 800 U.S. corporations, looking for companies with significant programs to recruit and retain Latinas, veterans, and military personnel. Companies are evaluated in 5 major categories: leadership programs, training, mentoring programs, employee benefits, and representation of Latinas in senior positions.

NEW PARENT ESSENTIAL UPDATE:

Looking Back at the History of America’s Black Banks, Even as They Strive For Vitality

In their prime, black banks across the country were a financial shelter for their customers.

Today, however, the number of black-owned banks is collapsing. That’s causing some observers to question if the banks’ days as economic engines helping underserved and distressed urban communities overcome issues like discrimination and redlining are numbered.

The most recent figure shows there are 22 black banks in America as of the first quarter of 2019, Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. reports. That number is down from a robust 48 in 2001.

The drop comes as the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City recently announced the publication of a free book, Let Us Put Our Money Together: The Founding of America’s First Black Banks, detailing the establishment, struggles, and triumphs of the banks.

“For the first African American banks, it was not only about serving as a source of credit for businesses and consumers, but also about providing training opportunities and jobs for African Americans, supporting economic development and, importantly, pride,” stated Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City President and CEO Esther George. “This book offers historical perspective on the role of—and the implications of the absence of—minority-owned depository institutions.”

The book covers many topics including efforts to establish African American banks before the Civil War. It details America’s first black bankers in the 1800s, their challenges, innovation, and resilience.

The book’s title is inspired by Maggie Lena Walker, the nation’s first black female bank president. She proclaimed, “Let us put our moneys together. Let us use our moneys; let us put our moneys out at usury among ourselves and reap the benefit ourselves. Let us have a bank that will take the nickels and turn them into dollars.”

The Decline in Black Banks

But times have changed as blacks no longer use the banks like they did decades ago. The number of banks ranked among the nation’s largest businesses by Black Enterprise has shifted strikingly. The 2009 BE Banks list included 25 banks, compared to 15 on the 2019 list. Black-owned banks no longer listed include Seaway Bank and Trust Co. and Highland Community Bank both of Chicago, Legacy Bank, and North Milwaukee State Bank, both of Milwaukee.

Others not on the 2019 list: Capital City Bank & Trust Co. of Atlanta, Independence Federal Savings Bank of  Washington. D.C., South Carolina Community Bank of Columbia, South Carolina, First Tuskegee Bank of Tuskegee, Alabama, and Advance Bank of Baltimore.

Over the years, some were ordered to shut down. Take Seaway Bank and Trust, once Chicago’s largest black bank. It was forced to close by regulators in 2017 after taking over Legacy Bank of Milwaukee after that bank failed as well in 2011.

The declining number of black banks was a motivation for the Let Us Put Our Money Together: The Founding of America’s First Black Bank, written by Timothy Todd, an executive writer with the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City.

Todd says developments in the area of black banks have been particularly disconcerting with the number of institutions declining by more than half since 2001.”When you add to this the number of households that are unbanked or underbanked, it really puts a spotlight on questions about the ability of individuals and families to borrow money on fair and appropriate terms for things like financing an education, establishing a business, or buying a home,” he said via email.

Working to Save Our Institutions

The promising news is actions are underway to aid black banks. U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush, D-Illinois, has introduced the Rescue Act for Black and Community Banks. The bill—initiated in January 2019—aims to bring regulatory relief for black banks from Congress, boost wealth-building for black consumers and businesses, and help save black banks from failing.

One group, Bank Black USA, launched a movement requesting that  Americans deposit $ 500 million into black-owned banks by Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2018. Some $ 50 million was deposited into blank banks in a six-month period, according to the FDIC.

Support might very well be necessary as the business landscape is rugged for black-owned banks. Here’s a stunning statistic: Seven of the 10 largest black-owned banks on the 2019 BE Banks list had lower assets for 2018 than for 2017.

Still, observers say, black banks are still essential as they can serve as an alternative to high-priced options such as payday lenders and check-cashing stores blacks often rely on. And blacks are still more likely to be denied a home loan or small business loan from mainstream banks than whites.

William Michael Cunningham, an economist and banking expert, says it’s interesting that the Fed would write a book on black banks given their responsibility under federal law from over two decades ago to save minority banks in the face of the current decline.

Cunningham says Congress enacted the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery, and Enforcement Act of 1989 (FIRREA) under Section 308. Among its goals, the law called for preserving the number of minority depository institutions and offering technical help to prevent insolvency of institutions. He said the law also was geared to promote and encourage the creation of new minority depository institutions. “An objective review of recent performance based on 308’s standards would lead to the conclusion that the Fed has failed to preserve the number of black-owned depository institutions.”

OneUnited Bank’s Lady Liberty Visa Debit Card (Image: OneUnited)

Furthermore, Cunningham contends black-owned banks today are too small and weak to make a measurable difference in the black community. He claims Boston-based OneUnited Bank, No. 1 on the BE Banks list with assets of around $ 656 million, is much smaller than banks serving other racial groups. He pointed to Asian-owned East-West Bank based in Pasadena, California, with assets of nearly $ 40 billion as an example. And, of course, America’s largest bank, New York-based JPMorgan Chase, which caters to multiple races, has assets exceeding $ 2.7 trillion.

Cunningham says the “black bank” simply is not in the same league.

“Banking regulators have a policy of keeping black banks small and of keeping new black entrants out,” Cunningham says “Without assets and scale, black banks are limited in the amount of lending they can do. No lending means no significant economic development. They are useless in this regard, except as window dressing.”

So who should be leading the charge to help these banks survive? Perhaps the Fed or other sources? Todd says despite efforts on multiple fronts, this is an area where meaningful progress has been hard to come by, although there have been some successes.

“I think the stories of many of the earliest bankers are inspirational and I hope others will find them to be as well,” he says. “I hope that this advances the discussion about the important role that banks play in serving their communities, which is perhaps different than how many might think about banking.”

How the Shakers Became America’s Best Opium Producers

Photo Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily Beast/Getty

When ancient Egyptians began to grow opium poppies, it reduced their dependence on Middle Eastern opium. Two thousand years later, when India’s Mughal Empire encouraged farmers to grow opium poppies, it did the same. During the 19th century, when farmers in America made serious attempts to grow their own, they too were trying to free themselves from dependence on foreign opium.

Americans had first tried to create a domestic supply during the Revolutionary War, when supplies of the painkiller were cut off by Great Britain. In fact, injured soldiers were treated with homegrown opium from Charlestown, New Hampshire. Even Thomas Jefferson may have been involved. When not working on military and political strategies in the Virginia state government, he did his patriotic duty by growing opium poppies in his gardens, poppies that were still cultivated at Monticello until 1992, when they were pulled up and destroyed along with all seed packets of “Jefferson’s Monticello Poppies.” (There had been a drug bust at the University of Virginia, which was literally out the back door, and, spooked by the potential for bad publicity, Monticello’s board felt they had to take action. Jefferson’s invaluable poppies went from the endangered species list to extinction in a matter of hours.)

Contemporary writings after the Civil War point to growing interest in cultivation in America. In a special feature in 1810 of the American New Dispensatory—one of the few reliable sources of information about drugs for doctors at the time—James Thacher calculated that an acre of rich, well-cultivated poppies could produce 15 to 20 pounds of opium, and that the grower could earn about $ 70 per acre from it, making opium more profitable than most grains. He added that while it was a lot of work to collect the poppy juice, fortunately “by far the greatest part of the whole labour of the season, may be performed by women and children.” In conclusion, Thacher argued, “Every effort, therefore, to effect an object so truly interesting and important ought to be duly encouraged and rewarded.”

Doris Day Was America’s Sweetheart With Added Steel

Martin Mills/Getty

It’s a raw, rainy day on the East Coast; the perfect day, if you had the time and inclination, to curl up and watch a Doris Day movie. It would also be a perfect tribute to Day, who died this morning at her home in Carmel, California, aged 97.

Announcing her death, T. Robert Bashara, CFO of the Doris Day Animal Foundation, said she had died peacefully, having been “delighted” by all the birthday messages she had received on April 3 from fans around the world.

We all know what that means, and what it promises. It likely does not mean Love Me Or Leave Me (1955), opposite James Cagney, or The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956), directed by Alfred Hitchcock, fine films as they are, both showcasing Day singing memorable songs, including the Oscar-winning “Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be).”

Unclaimed Baggage Center – America’s weirdest attraction

Have you ever been to the airport baggage claim and seen that solitary case or two going around and around the machine, with no obvious owner? Many people forget their luggage, and airports every year can end up with loads of cases and unclaimed baggage. You’ve probably heard urban legends about what happens to baggage that is left in the airport, but what actually happens?

Well, it might surprise you to know that there is actually an Unclaimed Baggage Center in the United States where a lot of this luggage gets sent. Of course, there are attempts to trace the owners first, but sometimes, as we know, this is not always possible. So, let’s find out more about this remarkable, and unlikely American attraction!

Unclaimed Baggage Center, Scottsboro, Alabama

Scottsboro, Alabama

It might seem unlikely, but Scottsboro, Alabama is actually the location for this peculiar Unclaimed Baggage Center. This is the place for unclaimed baggage that the airports have not been able to find a home for. It’s a big warehouse filled with all manner of luggage in every size, color, and shape. You can take a road trip here, and check out one of the most unusual attractions in the United States. Created by Doyle Owens in 1970, the place has become hugely popular with tourists visiting the lakes and foothills of northern Alabama.

A treasure trove

The center is a veritable treasure trove of untouched items just begging to be discovered. A secondhand store supplied by the biggest US airline companies, and the only store in the whole country to sell lost luggage. Every case and bag has a story to tell, and beneath the dust over leather or nylon, there are so many mysteries to be uncovered. The enterprise was moved to its current home in 1995 and boasts more than one million visitors per year. There is also a stunning museum of oddities here that you can pass the time taking a look at too.

Unclaimed Baggage Center, Scottsboro, Alabama

Buying new attractions

With just about everything you could think of, there are so many new attractions to spend your money on here. 40,000 square feet of undiscovered junk that could well hold some treasures deep within. The great thing about this place is that it doubles as a thrift store, meaning you can buy all the stuff they have on display – it’s all been cleaned or washed beforehand of course. This often means you can get brand new stuff for prices much less than you would pay in a regular store. And, with 7,000 new items hitting the center every day, it’s not as though you need to worry about a limited range!

If you’ve been watching too many episodes of Storage Wars, and you’ve been bitten by the bidding bug, you should head to the Unclaimed Baggage Center and bid for some unclaimed luggage. One man’s junk is another man’s treasure, and one person’s abandoned luggage can hold so many undiscovered surprises. This is something you can really get to enjoy properly by making the most of this attraction.

America’s Black Billionaires: The Richest African Americans in 2019

Earlier this month, Forbes published its annual World’s Billionaires list, which ranks the richest people around the world based on the wealth they’ve accumulated using stock prices and exchange rates as of February 2019. By no surprise, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos was named no. 1 due to his staggering $ 131 billion net worth. However, out of the 607 Americans featured on the list, just four were black. Here’s a list of the handful of African American billionaires.

David Steward

World Wide Technology Founder and Chairman David Steward

With a net worth of $ 3 billion, David Steward ranks as no. 745 on Forbes’ list of global billionaires. In 1990, Steward invested $ 250,000 that he earned from two auditing ventures to launch World Wide Technology (WWT), an IT provider that offers hardware and software products and services to large public and private customers in various sectors. Its clients include Citi, Verizon, and the U.S. government. Last year, WWT earned $ 11.2 billion in sales and was ranked as no. 1 on the BE100sBLACK ENTERPRISE’s annual list of top black-owned companies in the nation. The 67-year-old business tycoon also graced the cover of BLACK ENTERPRISE in June 2001.

Steward, the chairman and majority owner of WWT, grew up during segregation in a poor neighborhood in Missouri. His father worked as a mechanic, janitor, and trash collector to provide for him and his seven siblings.

Oprah Winfrey

The “Queen of All Media” has accumulated a massive net worth of $ 2.5 billion, according to Forbes, thanks in large part to her partnership with Weight Watchers. Back in 2015, Oprah Winfrey bought a 10% stake and became an ambassador for the company. By June 2018, her stake was estimated at $ 427 million. Winfrey also generates revenue through several business endeavors, including ownership of the cable network OWN, Harpo Films, a multi-year content partnership deal with Apple, and her iconic talk show, The Oprah Winfrey Show.

Robert F. Smith

Robert F. Smith is the founder, chairman, and chief executive of Vista Equity Partners. His company was recognized as the top private equity firm on the BE100s last year, generating $ 14 billion in capital. And, with a $ 5 billion net worth, he is currently the richest black person in the country.

Heralded as a private equity titan and Wall Street wiz, Smith started his early life out as a computer geek working in STEM before earning a degree in chemical engineering from Cornell University. He also attended Columbia Business School and ended up serving as co-chief of the investment banking division at Goldman Sachs. Smith founded Vista Equity Partners in 2000, which focuses on investing in technology companies.

In 2013, BE named the firm BE100s Financial Services Company of the Year and Smith as one of the Most Powerful Blacks on Wall Street. Smith made a shrewd move in acquiring Sunquest Information Systems Inc., for a relative bargain price of $ 327 million–$ 200 million in equity and $ 127 million in debt.

In a recent transaction, a Vista Equity-acquired company, Marketo, was sold to Adobe for $ 4.7 billion.

Although considered the greatest basketball player of all time, Michael Jordan only made about $ 90 million during his stellar career in the NBA. However, thanks to lucrative endorsements, like his lifetime deal with Nike, and big investments, like his purchase of the Charlotte Hornets, he has amassed a $ 1.9 billion net worth.

Gabrielle Union To Replace Mel B On ‘America’s Got Talent’

Get ready for a big shake up on America’s Got Talent next season as Mel B and Heidi Klum have both dropped from the judging panel.

The Spice Girl has been a judge on the show for the last six seasons but there have long been whispers that she wouldn’t be invited back for the 14th season because her headline-making personal problems and marital issues are huge distractions.

Instead, Variety reports that their chairs will be filled by dancer Julianne Hough and actress Gabrielle Union who will join regulars Simon Cowell and Howie Mandel.

Hosting duties will also be changing as Tyra Banks is being replaced by actor Terry Crews, who has been hosting America’s Got Talent: The Champions.

“One of the many secrets to the success and longevity of America’s Got Talent is its fearless drive to reinvent itself,” said Meredith Ahr, president of the alternative and reality group at NBC Entertainment.

“The next evolution of the format brings in fresh expert eyes to join Simon and Howie on the panel. Gabrielle and Julianne are two of the most aspirational women in the business, on top of being electric entertainers with talent across disciplines.

“I am excited to see how their knowledge, compassion and sheer joy enhance the experience for acts and viewers alike. As their partner in crime, host Terry Crews will continue to light up the stage with his quick wit and unending charm.”

Hough is a two-time professional dance champion on Dancing with the Stars and has been a judge on series.

Union will next star in and exec produce the Bad Boys spinoff series L.A.’s Finest – which premieres May 13 on Spectrum Originals network.
