The Soap Opera Star, the Sex Cult, and ‘Smallville’: NXIVM Gets the Lifetime Movie Treatment

The chilling story of cult leader Keith Raniere and his network of sex slaves, hidden behind the front of a self-help program called NXIVM, is the latest sensational crime story to get the Lifetime movie treatment. Escaping the NXIVM Cult: A Mother’s Fight to Save Her Daughter, which premiered on Saturday, follows the true story of ’80s soap actress Catherine Oxenberg’s attempts to loosen her twentysomething daughter India from NXIVM’s grasp.

Oxenberg played an important role in exposing Raniere’s horrific crimes through her attempts to save her daughter. She interviewed former members of the cult, compiled a report for the FBI, and a spoke with the New York Times. Raniere, 58, was convicted of sex trafficking, among other charges, in June and faces 20 years in prison. The 90-minute TV movie offers PG recreations of the most disturbing details of the NXIVM case, including the branding of female members with Raniere’s initials.

Escaping the NXIVM Cult shows its cards early, leading with a scene straight out of a (very tame) horror movie. Shots of a shadowy suburban neighborhood, complete with cul-de-sacs and neat rows of townhouses, convey that the extraordinary horrors of NXIVM occurred behind closed doors in an ordinary town.

Felicity Huffman Gets Prison Time in College Admissions Scandal

Getty Images

BOSTON—When Felicity Huffman finally received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2012, she and husband William H. Macy were bookended by their grinning blonde daughters, Sophia and Georgia.

Seven years later, Huffman’s star came crashing down when she was caught trying to cheat Sophia’s way into college as part of the nation’s largest-ever higher education bribery scheme, dubbed “Operation Varsity Blues” by the FBI. The resulting scandal froze Huffman’s award-winning career and left her relationship with her teenage daughters in tatters.

On Friday, a federal judge sentenced Huffman to 14 days in prison after she pleaded guilty in May to a charge of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud.

Caitlyn Jenner Gets Meanest Jokes at Alec Baldwin Roast—Then Her Revenge

Jerod Harris/Getty

BEVERLY HILLS, California—Like Donald Trump, who received the Comedy Central Roast treatment just five years before he was elected president, Alec Baldwin provides plenty of material for comedians to work with. Unlike Trump, Baldwin is capable of laughing at himself.

The actor’s laugh was ever-present Saturday night during the taping of the #BaldwinRoast Saturday night at the Saban Theatre in Los Angeles, even as comics like Roastmaster General Jeff Ross, Nikki Glaser, Caroline Rhea and Adam Carolla savaged him with punchlines about his controversial past.

Also on hand were more left-field figures like Caitlyn Jenner, Robert De Niro and comedy superfan Blake Griffin. Debra Messing was originally scheduled to roast the presidential stand-in but backed out at the last minute amidst her Twitter feud with Trump.

‘Black Panther’ Sequel Gets 2022 Release Date

BRITAIN-ENTERTAINMENT-CINEMA

Source: TOLGA AKMEN / Getty

We will be headed back to Wakanda soon but not as soon as we would like. The Wrap reports that while at Disney’s D23 Expo in Anaheim, CA the film’s director Ryan Coogler revealed that the sequel will be hitting theaters May 6th, 2020.

With Black Panther being such a box office smash,  the sequel will have big shoes to fill. The original grossed over $ 200 million opening weekend last year and went on to take in $ 1.3 billion in box office sales worldwide.

Having another black superhero film released had a major impact on black culture.  From everyone showing up to the film’s release in Dashikis to the Halloween costumes,  Black Panther  created a moment of jubilance and triumph. With a sequel we get to relive that moment.

As we wait for T’Challa and company to return to the big screen,  hopefully our other black superhero flick will be released. It was announced that two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali will be starring in Marvel’s reboot of Blade.

Strictly’s Katya Jones ‘gets partnered with Paralympian Will Bayley’ after being reinstated into the main line-up

STRICTLY pro Katya Jones has been paired with Paralympian table tennis player Will Bayley for the upcoming series.

The Russian dancer, 30, who recently split from husband Neil Jones, was only reinstated in the main line-up following last year’s Seann Walsh snog scandal after bosses booked an extra male contestant.

Rex Features

Strictly pro Katya Jones has been paired with Paralympian table tennis player Will Bayley for the upcoming series[/caption]

A source told the Mirror: “Katya and Will have been put together, they are in early group rehearsals and bosses will be looking out for which couples gel. Quite often the pairings do stick.”

The BBC declined to comment when contacted by The Sun Online.

Just days ago The Sun Online exclusively revealed how Neil and Katya had been planning their shock split for nearly a month.

According to new documents, the professional dancers set up their own individual companies weeks ago, despite always working jointly during their 11 years together.

PA:Press Association

Katya and Neil Jones have been planning their split for nearly a month
Rex Features

On 31 July, Neil set up Jonesey Ltd, and just under a week later, on August 5, Katya set up her own firm Sokolova Ltd, which is her maiden name.

Both are classified as ‘amusement and recreation activities’ businesses.

Until that point, the pair, who had been married for six years and together since 2008, had always been a tight duo.

They had their own dance studio and events space called The Joneses’ Studio, in Alton, Hampshire, which hosts dance classes and lessons.

They shared a dancing school together
PA:Press Association
But now Neil is striking out on his own

They also had their own website neilandkatya.com which advertised all their work, including their most recent performance in June where Neil, 37, had directed and they both starred in a show called Somnium: A Dancer’s Dream at the Sadler’s Wells Theatre, London.

Despite most Strictly dancers earning over £30,000 from appearing on the show, Katya and Neil’s joint performing arts company, The Joneses’ Ltd, was barely profitable, only having £4,136 in reserves last year.

Ever since the split was announced last Sunday, fans have been wondering if it had been a business arrangement since Katya, 30, was caught kissing her former Strictly dance partner, comedian Seann Walsh, last October.

One said: “I think this was a marriage of convenience to be honest. It was weird how Neil was so unbothered by the kiss.”

Yet they could be taking a leaf out of the book of their good friends, Karen and Kevin Clifton, who managed to divorce on good terms even amid adultery claims.

For a long time after their split, Karen and Kevin ran The Clifton Academy – a dance school in Grimsby – together until Kevin resigned as a director in June.

The Joneses’ Studio is a similar concept, but has even more money making activities going on such as hosting weddings, meets and greets with Neil and Katya, and even choreographing newly weds’ first dance.

Katya and Neil carefully planned their split and how to split their businesses
Instagram

In a statement posted on both their Instagrams, they claimed they wanted to remain a team, saying: “Hi everyone. As our fans and loyal supporters you are really important to us and so we wanted to let you know some news.

“After 11 years we have made the mutual decision to separate.

“We will always love each other, just in a different way as friends.

“This will never change what a great team we make and we are really proud of everything we have achieved together.”

Say What Now? Georgia Teen Gets Life Sentence for Strangling His Sister Over the Wi-Fi Password

18-year-old Kevon Watkins was found guilty and  sentenced to life in prison for strangling Alexus Breanna Watkins, his 20-year-old sister, during an argument over the family’s Wi-Fi password.

via AJC:

Watkins, who was 16 at the time of the murder, waived his right to a jury trial, opting instead to have a judge hear testimony and decide his fate.

The incident began as an argument between the teenager and his mother after Kevon Watkins changed the Wi-Fi password so he could play video games without interruption, prosecutors said.

Fearing the confrontation would turn physical, Alexus Watkins came to her mother’s aid, prosecutor Jason Martin argued in court. Kevon and Alexus tussled and fell to the floor, authorities said. When their mother couldn’t separate her children, she called for help.

Prosecutors said Kevon held his sister in a chokehold for about 15 minutes, and one Bibb County deputy testified the 16-year-old was still choking her when authorities arrived 10 minutes after the 911 call.

Watkins eventually released the woman and deputies tried to resuscitate her. She was declared dead at a hospital later that night.

Martin argued that although Watkins didn’t intend to kill his sister, he intentionally placed her in the chokehold that led to her death.

“This act of violence resulted in an unspeakable tragedy for this family,” Macon DA David Cooke said. “I hope this verdict and sentence closes the door on this chapter of their lives and that they will be able to begin to heal.”

Senseless.

The New York Post Gets Roasted For Saying A Black Girl Was Setting Her Hair On Fire When She Was Just Sealing Her Ends

Beautiful Black dreadlocked Woman in Studio Setting

Source: Lorado / Getty

At least once a week, I think about how different our lives are from White folk. It reminds me of that scene in Save The Last Dance, when Kerry Washington’s character tells Julia Stiles about the world she and her brother come from. Stiles responds, “There’s only one world, Chenille.” And she hit her with a painful truth. “That’s what they teach you. We know different.”

Whew chillay. The accuracy.

There are countless examples of the ways in which our cultures differ. And what is obvious or natural to us is entirely foreign to the White people to which we live in such close proximity.

Just earlier today, I stumbled upon this tweet.

We have our things. And I like that we have a whole world that White people don’t have access to. Honestly, they’ve taken enough. But in the days of representation, increased coverage of the issues affecting people of color and more, our “secrets” can present a bit of a problem in the media. Take for instance this most recent example from The New York Post. They shared a tweet talking about a girl “setting her hair on fire.”

At first glance, I didn’t exactly get it. It didn’t look like she was trying to harm herself in such a drastic way. I figured if you want to set your hair on fire, you would start at the scalp. And if you look at it harder, you think maybe homegirl was just trying to seal her ends. And it reminded Black folk across the Twitterverse how much White people don’t know about us. And they let their voices be heard.

Twitter User Brags About His Wife-To-Be’s Support, Gets Dragged For It

A soon-to-be married man took to Twitter to praise his fiancée for all of the financial sacrifices she made for him while they were dating, and Black Twitter erupted in anger.

Twitter user @Bobphondo outlined ten things his future bride did to help him with during a rough time, including: buying him his first car, helped him pay his rent, gave him her laptop and covered most of the costs for their dates for a year.

He ended his list of “wifey qualifiers” by explaining that he’s stable now, but wants to marry his woman because after all they’ve been through he knows that she loves him, for him.

“Though I’m very stable and all that now, I know she doesn’t really care about those things. She cares about me solely. I know she’d give me anything in the world if she had to,coz she has proved it over and over again. Ladies and gentlemen, that’s the kinda woman I’m marrying.”

Twitter erupted in uproar, dismissing the fiance’s praise of his significant other as gold-digging. One can’t overlook the double standard of the situation he outlined, considering many women get bashed for wanting sponsors or providers, yet many men put the yoke of “ride or die” chick on their partners as they navigate financial hardship.

So often women have to pay the price, literally, to “earn” the title of “wife.” The “pick me” narrative makes women believe that they can perform their way into lifetime partnership–which leads many women to overspend, over-give and overdo in hopes of “winning” a ring.

While every relationship is different, and it’s important to be able to hold your partner down through the good and the bad, instances like this come off as taking advantage of someone’s resources for personal gain.

Caroline Flack gets cosy with Love Island’s Wes Nelson as they party together in Ibiza

CAROLINE Flack was seen getting cosy with Love Island’s Wes Nelson as she partied with him in Ibiza.

The show host, 39, wrapped her arms around the 21-year-old hunk as they got close on the boozy day out.

Caroline was letting her hair done ahead of filming the next recoupling in the villa.

Despite there being 18 years between them, the pair looked to be getting on famously and stayed close together chatting and giggling.

Cougar Caroline is known for her age-gap relationships.

In 2011, the then 31-year-old dated Harry Styles when he was just 17 years old.

Last year she was engaged to Apprentice and Celebrity Big Brother star Andrew Brady when he was 27.

After ending marriage plans with Andrew, Caroline was rumoured to have  had a fling with Strictly’s AJ Pritchard who is 24.

She’s also just ended a fleeting relationship with rugby ace Danny Cipriani, 31.

Speaking to The Sun earlier this month, Caroline described her dream man.

Back in the villa, fans have been calling for 28-year-old Maura Higgins to be kicked off the show for “sexually harassing” Tommy Fury, 20.

Last night she desperately tried to plant a kiss on the handsome boxer, 20, who rejected her advances.

The uncomfortable scene led fans to accuse Love Island bosses of “double standards” as they claimed Tommy would have been thrown out if it was the other around.

One said: “@LoveIsland should understand what Maura did last night to tommy was unacceptable. If it was the other way round Tommy probably would have been removed from, but what will happen to Maura? Nothing! Because she’s a women. DOUBLE F***ING STANDARDS at its finest #LoveIsland.”

Another added: “@LoveIsland why are you permitting Maura to sexually harass Tommy in this way? It’s creepy, & if it were the other way round you would have removed him from the Villa….#loveisland #doublestandards.”

One demanded: “Can you @LoveIsland remove Maura for sexual harassment #loveisland.”

Maura tried to get her own way but was knocked back countless times

Someone else added: “Is it just me who thinks this but the way Maura tried to push a kiss on tommy, if that was the other way round then more people would be kicking off ??? #loveisland.”

Another fan said: “Maura is like a bloody predator. Forcing herself on Tommy like that is wrong. If it was the other way round there would be hell. #DoubleStandards #loveisland.”

Someone added: “No lie if it was the other way round, Tommy, 28 while maura as a 20 year old then people would’ve called Tommy a pedophile cause of that 8 year age gap #LoveIsland.”

A fan said: “All good everyone shouting about talking about women’s rights and equal rights until Maura is basically sexual harassing Tommy but barely anyone blinks an eye, other way round they’d be guaranteed uproar #LoveIsland.”

Another ranted: “How is Maura all over tommy not sexual assault. If it were the other way round and he was trying to kiss her when she’s clearly saying no then it would have been a problem… #loveisland.”

Rico Love Gets Passionate About Music, Entrepreneurship, and Values

Behind Rico Love is a creative, visionary and music industry educator that has produced, written, and contributed to hit records including Usher’s “There Goes My Baby,” Nelly’s “Just a Dream,” Trey Songz “Heart Attack,” Kelly Rowland’s “Motivation” feat Lil’ Wayne, and Beyoncé’s “Sweet Dreams.” He has also contributed to Grammy-winning works such as Beyoncé’s 2009 Best Contemporary R&B album “I Am… Sasha Fierce.”

Rico Love’s body of work is extensive. However, not only does he work as both a producer and artist within the ever-changing landscape of the music industry; he also invests in technologies that provide a greater platform for artist discovery and creativity.

In an interview, Love spoke about the music industry, creating financial opportunities, and gives advice to young creatives.

Black Enterprise: How do you see yourself evolving as a veteran in the music landscape that exists today?

Rico Love: I am now 36-years-old, which is a dinosaur in the music industry, but I’ve been in the game since I was 17 years old. At first, you are bothered by how easily accessible things have become. When you get past the initial annoyance of the change, you adjust. I have been able to create different platforms for myself where I can add value. This includes adding value to myself through the creation of content for others, developing platforms for emerging artists, and also developing this with a financial strategy in play.

Financially, how are you able to set yourself apart to either create or take advantage of opportunities when presented?

I went through some of the most challenging financial times of my life because of my value system and unwillingness to compromise on my principles for a dollar. It’s about having the willingness and smarts and being open-minded to recognize what is a good opportunity and what is not. Even more important is building your brand to be strong enough to fit in many rooms. I can fit in the streets, in Hollywood, and corporate because I can articulate myself in all three parameters. I do not limit myself, but I don’t spread myself so wide that I alienate myself from being able to gain financially.

Why is community currency important, and as a musician why must you connect and have a genuine appreciation for the communities that support you?

I am who I am. I don’t place a level of importance on things that I do in the sense that I don’t have to tell myself to do things for the community. It is who I am so it is already important for me to do things in the community. The value and substance of who you are is a natural thing. It can’t be coached up.

What are you working on in the world of tech?

There is something I have in the works that allow creatives to create and build records the same way people create via Twitter or Instagram. A quick form transfer file that allows collaboration between creatives. For example, I start a loop and post it—someone else can join in on the creative process. if a piano player goes to my page they can add a melody to the loop. Musicians are able to watch and join in on the session and create a whole track real time.

What are three key pieces of advice for young creatives?

  • If you want to do something and you are willing to do it for 10 years for free then that is what you truly want. if you see someone doing something and you see it as a quick way to make money then it is not your passion. Stop focusing on simply trying to get a dollar because even if you become successful you are still pushing the culture back.
  • Elevate yourself and stop looking for people to validate you and elevate you. Create something people cannot refuse. Stop telling people what you need and starting being what they need. When you become what they need you do not have to ask people for anything.
  • Who are you? People do everything else in the world and try to figure everything else out but never define who they are. Figure out and discover who you are as an artist, as a person, and as a brand. Once you discover this, remain true to your core value and belief system and do not compromise this.

EMPLOYMENT SEARCH UPDATE:

Your Ultimate Guide to Team USA as the 2019 Women’s World Cup Gets Underway

The FIFA Women’s World Cup kicks off in France on Friday, when the host county takes on South Korea at 3 p.m. ET. Expectations are high for the top-ranked United States in the monthlong event. The U.S. is seeking a fourth World Cup title after victories in 1991 (the first year of the event), 1999, and in 2015. With a tournament win, Team USA would become just the second-ever country to win back-to-back Women’s World Cup titles; Germany took the trophy in 2003 and 2007.

Four years ago, some 25 million people watched the American women’s team beat Japan in the World Cup final — a record U.S. audience for any soccer game. New York City threw the team a ticker-tape parade, a first for a women’s sports squad. “I was actually thinking, like, shit man, they’re going to close down New York City, New Yorkers can be pissed, not that many people are going to come,” says U.S. forward Megan Rapinoe. But thousands of fans lined the streets of lower Manhattan to fête the World Cup champs. “To be completely blown away like that was very, very special,” she says.

Now Team USA is looking for an even bigger celebration. To help you catch soccer fever this summer, here’s TIME’s guide to the Women’s World Cup.

The path to victory

Team USA was placed in Group F — one of six four-team groupings that make up the 24-team tournament — along with Chile, Sweden, and Thailand. So that you know when to sneak away from work: the U.S. kicks off against Thailand, in Reims, on Tuesday, June 11, at 3 p.m ET. Then, the Americans take on World Cup newbies Chile on Sunday, June 16, at 12 p.m. ET in Paris. The U.S. will be heavy favorites against those two teams, which could set up a showdown with Sweden, on Thursday, June 20, at 3 p.m. ET in Le Havre, for first place in the group. The top two teams in each of the six groups, plus the top four third place teams, advance to the round of 16 knockout stage.

A U.S.-Sweden duel for group supremacy has potential for intrigue, since the winner could face host country France in a quarterfinal (assuming France wins its group). So finishing in second could actually offer an easier path to the semifinals.

The fight off the pitch

The U.S. women’s team enters this World Cup embroiled in a lawsuit with its employer. On March 8, International Women’s Day, the team filed a federal gender discrimination complaint against the U.S. Soccer Federation, arguing that the organization pays “only lip service to gender equality.” The federation has denied unlawful conduct, attributing any alleged pay discrepancies to “differences in the aggregate revenue generated by the different teams and/or any other factor other than sex.”

The World Cup also spotlights more indignity for the women: two major regional men’s tournaments, the CONCACAF Gold Cup (which features the U.S. men and other teams from North America, Central America and the Caribbean) and the CONMEBOL Copa América (featuring the best teams in South America) are being held at the same time; the finals of the Gold Cup and Copa América are on July 7, the same day as the Women’s World Cup. The men’s World Cup final would never have to share a stage with another soccer tournament. “It’s ridiculous and disappointing,” says Rapinoe.

FIFA has touted its doubling of prize money available to the 2019 Women’s World Cup countries, from $ 15 to $ 30 million (the winning country gets $ 4 million, up from the $ 2 million the U.S. received for winning the tournament in 2015). But the gender pay gap has actually widened, as the men have seen increases too, from $ 358 million in 2014 to $ 400 million in 2018, a bump which increased the difference in men’s and women’s prize money from $ 343 million to $ 370 million.

So FIFA’s raises have still left many women feeling they don’t get what they deserve. The Associated Press has reported that FIFA’s cash reserves soared to a record $ 2.74 billion in the four-year period covering the 2018 World Cup. “They have essentially unlimited resources,” says Rapinoe. “I don’t think that it’s really been a huge change at all. I think sort of the incremental change that we’ve seen is just not enough. I don’t think that’s really the model that needs to happen. I would like to see a major paradigm shift.”

The Americans’ star striker

U.S. striker Alex Morgan — subject of a recent TIME cover story — is the biggest star in U.S. soccer. In April, Morgan, 29, became the third-youngest American player (behind Mia Hamm and Abby Wambach) to score 100 international goals. She has endorsement deals with companies like Nike, Coca-Cola, and Proctor & Gamble deodorant brand Secret, and a social media following in the millions. According to Hookit, a sports sponsorship analytics company, she delivers five times the social media engagement rate of the number two U.S. women’s player, Carli Lloyd. What’s more, she tops the engagement rate of the top-ranked men’s player, Christian Pulisic, sixfold. Among female athletes worldwide, she ranks fifth in social media engagement, trailing only Ronda Rousey, Serena Williams, Simone Biles and Maria Sharapova.

“I see her behind the scenes day-to-day,” says Rapinoe. “I think a lot of people see her show up and get sponsorships and score goals. But the amount of work she puts into it, and her desire to be as good as she possibly can be, is way more than most. She has that sort of elite mentality, not showing up and hoping that the World Cup goes great for her. But ensuring that the World Cup goes great.”

Vengeance awaits

The last time the U.S. women appeared in a major global tournament, the team made its earliest-ever exit from a mega-event: Sweden, then led by former U.S. coach Pia Sundhage, beat the Americans in 2016 Olympics quarterfinals on a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw. Afterwards, U.S. goalkeeper Hope Solo caused an international incident by calling the Swedes a “bunch of cowards” for sitting back on defense. (Solo, historically a supremely talented but divisive presence on the team, is gone this year, replaced by Alyssa Naeher, 31, who’ll make her World Cup debut; either Brianna Scurry or Solo has played every minute of every Olympics and World Cup since 2003.)

At the time, the quarterfinal defeat hit the Americans hard. But now it’s serving as motivation. “I feel like the loss in 2016 is fueling this team,” says forward Christen Press. After those Olympics, Morgan needed a reset. She spent part of 2017 playing for Olympique Lyonnais, one of the world’s premier club teams, and started meditating and doing yoga in France. “I hope that defeat and disappointment sticks in our minds,” says Morgan, “because I think it’s important for us to know that feeling when we step on the field on the highest stage again.” So they’ll work harder to never experience it again.

The Sauerbrunn Plan could save us

Pretty much all soccer fans agree that penalty-kick shootouts are a highly unsatisfying way to settle a tie. U.S. defender Becky Sauerbrunn, however, offers a pretty novel way to ditch PKs.

If a game is still tied after 30 minutes of extra time, instead of penalty kicks, all 11 players take the field for a sudden death session. Sauerbrunn’s twist: every two minutes, coaches must call one of their players off the field. If no one can score on 8v8 or 5v5 or even 2v2, the last player for each team goes 1v1, first score wins. And if that means two keepers are playing a little schoolyard head-to-head game — but on a 115 yard field and in front of millions — even better!

We need to get the Sauerbrunn Plan in front of FIFA. “Put me on the task force,” she says.

Carli’s case

Remember Carli Lloyd? The American soccer star who scored a hat trick against Japan in the 2015 World Cup final, including an almost cartoonish strike from midfield that somehow found the net? The back-to-back winner of the FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year award, in 2015-2016, has been coming off the bench for the U.S. in the run-up to the World Cup. At a recent media event, a reporter asked Lloyd if she was comfortable in her role. “No, I’m not,” said Lloyd, 36. “I’m not here to be a super-sub, plain and simple. That’s not the type of person I am.”

“I’m a fighter. I’ll fight to the end,” she says. “My age isn’t a factor. My ability isn’t a factor. I feel the fittest I’ve ever felt. I’ve reinvented my game these last three or four years: instead of the athletic, powerful Carli, just head down and go to goal, I’m a way better soccer player. I feel that my mind is the mind of a 36-year-old at the moment, but my body feels like the body of a 26-year-old.”
Heading into the Women’s World Cup, the U.S. has a pretty nice problem: this is one of its deepest teams ever. Lloyd has made her case for more time on the pitch; she’s scored four goals in her last five games for the team. “There’s no doubt in my mind that it doesn’t matter where you start,” says Lloyd, “it matters where you finish.”
