Millennials mangia with their eyes. Young people love Italian food — but for how it photographs, not its carby, tomato-y gloriousness, according to a new survey by OnePoll. Upgrade, the newest company by Renaud Laplanche, has a new credit card that it swears is good for you

Upgrade, the newest company by Renaud Laplanche, has a new credit card that it swears is good for youThree years ago, the founder of LendingClub, Renaud Laplanche, took the wraps off his second act, a consumer lending venture called Upgrade that now employs 350 people, has lent roughly $ 2 billion to 200,000 people, and has raised $ 142 million from outside investors. At the time, it was jumping into a crowded market that has only become more frenzied, with a growing number of fintech startups that market themselves as more thoughtful alternatives to established banks and traditional credit card companies. While giants like Visa and MasterCard charge interest and late fees for overdue payments, for example, the Stockholm, Sweden-based company Klarna —  which allows shoppers to buy now and pay later — makes money through retailer transaction fees and late fees but doesn’t charge interest fees.

‘The Walking Dead’ Season 10 Showcases What the Show Is Truly Good at: The Goo

Jackson Lee Davis/AMC

Now in its tenth season of basic-cable domination with no expiration date in sight, The Walking Dead knows what it’s not trying to do. It is not, for instance, a show about flirting. Even characters who bone, get hitched, procreate, or co-parent together often ooze the chemistry of two sheets of sandpaper. They also all dress terribly. Those issues are perhaps related.

For all its perennial cast shake-ups—particularly momentous in the past few seasons, with original series lead Andrew Lincoln’s departureThe Walking Dead is also, it knows, not an especially adventurous sort. It doesn’t aim to be one of those fancy critical-darling shows that reinvent themselves every season to explore new avenues of inquiry into the human condition. It sometimes gestures at being one, sure. But that dilettantish impulse soon subsides, and why shouldn’t it? The monster ratings it consistently pulls through season after season of cyclical us-versus-them bloodlust and warmongering are enough for this sweet, simple zombie show, god bless America.

No, The Walking Dead’s real ambition ten seasons in, what it still does better than almost any show on television, and what’s on full display in this year’s season premiere (“Lines We Cross”) is the goo: the show’s special and practical zombie effects. The sheer craft and creativity of the show’s effects teams have outshone its narrative imagination for years and are still a thrill to behold.

7 Good Reasons to Fire Your Real Estate Agent (And How to Do It)

Selling your home will probably be one of the biggest (and most nerve-racking) transactions of your lifetime. The process is riddled with anxiety—getting your property open-house ready, worrying that your house won’t sell for what it’s worth, dealing with buyers regularly traipsing through your home. That’s why it’s so important to have an experienced seller’s agent by your side every step of the way. But sometimes a house languishes on the market. While this could be the result of market forces or conditions specific to your property, sometimes your agent may be at fault, in which case you may want to move on to another agent. Here are 7 good reasons to fire your real estate agent—and some suggestions for how to go about it.

Yinka Ilori is a London-based artist of Nigerian heritage, who specialises in creating artwork that blends Nigerian traditions with contemporary design.

This Summer Yinka Ilori designed, ‘The Colour Palace’ – a temporary outdoor structure currently at the Dulwich Picture Gallery. It was the winning design for a competition run through the gallery and the London Festival of Architecture. Crafted from pieces of timber, each side of the timber louvres forming the façade is painted a different colour, creating shifting layers of pattern when viewed from different angles.

Yinka’s colour palace is a celebration of colour, pattern and light and draws upon both European and African cultural traditions in creating a design that is relevant to and representative of today’s multicultural London.

Nikki Bella, Artem Chigvintsev Feel ‘So Good’ After Confirming Relationship

It’s safe to say Nikki Bella and Artem Chigvintsev are more in love than ever. After six months of dating without labels, the couple are ready to shout their relationship status from the rooftops.

“Oh my gosh. It feels so good!” the Total Bellas star, 35, told Us Weekly at Variety Children’s Charity Poker & Casino Night on Wednesday, July 24. “I don’t have to hide it. I’m such a grabby person, like so PDA. And there’d be times I would just want to grab him so much, and then I’m like, ‘Oh shoot, I got to pretend like I don’t know you.’ But it’s fun. It’s nice ’cause now it’s kind of like having freedom. We could do whatever we want and it’s all good.”

Chigvintsev, 37, added that people made a “really quick assumption” about their relationship, so they wanted time before they made things official.

“It was so new for both of us we didn’t want everyone to jump to conclusions that it’s going to lead to something serious,” he explained. “And it did. … It was going fast.”

The twosome met during season 25 of Dancing With the Stars in 2017. While Bella was still engaged to John Cena at the time, they called off their engagement during the summer of 2018. By January, Bella and Chigvintsev couldn’t deny the chemistry between them.

“Artem is an amazing guy. You’re really fun to date. We have the best date nights,” the former WWE diva gushed to Us, making Chigvintsev blush. “Anytime I’m, like, kind of sad or just having a hard day, he always shows up with a bouquet of flowers. And it’s really cute and he just will do cute stuff. I remember when we were hiking one time and it was a beautiful sunset and he’ll just do little, like a dip or like a few little dance moves. And as a woman, I can’t tell you, but it makes us smile so big and it makes me feel so amazing.”

The former dance partners also enjoy chill nights at home watching reality TV.

“We’re obsessed with Love Island and The Hills,” Bella told Us. “I think our favorite thing to do is we like to open up a bottle of wine, put on Lumineers, Pandora … He cooks dinner and then when he’s done cooking dinner, we have our last glass of wine in bed watching Love Island.”

Is Your Debt ‘Good’ or ‘Bad’? It Depends

Are student loans good debt that can open the door to a career or an insurmountable burden? Is all credit card debt a sign of reckless spending, or can it be a smart way to cover an expense? In general, no form of debt is inherently “good” or “bad.” What makes it good or bad is how it fits into your overall financial picture.

Good debt is manageable within your budget and can help you achieve your goals. On the flip side, bad debt is unaffordable and can overwhelm your finances.

Ask yourself these questions to determine if you’re dealing with good or bad debt. Then see how you can manage it.

WHAT LED TO THE DEBT?

The reason you took on debt can help you determine whether it’s helpful or harmful.

“Any debt that is taken on because people don’t have any kind of choice means they are starting out in a place of disadvantage,” says Ida Rademacher, a vice president of nonprofit think tank Aspen Institute. “That can create a spiral that can prevent people from being resilient.”

Conversely, Rademacher says, “the more helpful forms of debt can help people to become more resilient.” Student loans, for example, may enable a career that offers a high salary, making you more financially sound.

Think about whether you incurred the debt:

TO ACHIEVE A LONG-TERM GOAL: Student loans and auto loans can fit in this category. These debts can help you move ahead in life, so long as you don’t take on too much.

OUT OF CONVENIENCE: These are debts you incur to make other aspects of your life easier, such as when you have a big one-time expense and don’t want to deplete your savings. They can be benign if they’re helping you manage your overall financial picture.

DUE TO AN EMERGENCY: Desperation debt can be dangerous. A need for cash in a hurry can leave you with limited options and result in high interest costs.

BOTTOM LINE: Debt taken to achieve a goal or out of convenience can be useful as long as you have a plan for paying it off . To avoid desperation debt, build an emergency fund. A 2016 report from public policy think tank Urban Institute found that savings as small as $ 250 can help consumers avoid missed bills and even eviction.

IS YOUR DEBT AFFORDABLE?

Comparing your debt load with your gross income can be a helpful tool for seeing if it’s manageable or becoming too large to tackle on your own. Leaving aside mortgages and student loans, since they’re generally more manageable forms of debt, here are some guidelines to consider:

DEBT LOAD UP TO 15% OF INCOME: This amount is likely affordable but is worth addressing. If you’re carrying a moderate credit card balance, for example, paying it off can free up cash and save on interest.

DEBT LOAD FROM 16% TO 39% OF INCOME: Debts in this range get increasingly difficult to pay off. You may be able to make them more affordable by reducing interest or payments, such as with a balance transfer credit card or a personal loan. If you can’t qualify for one of those, you could explore a debt management plan with a nonprofit credit counselor.

DEBT LOAD OF 40% OR MORE OF INCOME: Debt loads this high can be insurmountable. Use the free consultations offered by many nonprofit credit counselors and bankruptcy attorneys to see if debt relief might be right for you.

BOTTOM LINE: Know how your debt compares with your income and use that perspective to understand which approach is the most logical.

HOW IS YOUR DEBT AFFECTING YOUR LIFE?

Think about how debt is impacting your life overall, says Thomas Nitzsche, media manager at nonprofit credit counseling agency Money Management International.

“If your debt is something that is hanging over your head and you’re worrying about it constantly, that’s something you should address,” he says. Any debt that affects your mental health or significantly diminishes your quality of life is a bad debt.

Nitzsche advises taking an honest look at your situation and making a plan to resolve debt through a payoff approach like debt snowball — focusing on your smallest debts first — or by seeking debt relief. “Realize how uncomfortable you are with your debt and that it’s in your power to make changes.”

BOTTOM LINE: Debt doesn’t have to rule your life. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, take the first steps to resolve your obligations.

Review: Always Be My Maybe Is Maybe Almost Good. Is That Good Enough?

It’s ridiculous that Hollywood can go for 25 years without making a single movie featuring a predominantly Asian cast: That’s the number of years stretching between 1993’s The Joy Luck Club and last year’s Crazy Rich Asians, and there’s no excuse for it. But while movies need more representation of all kinds of people, we should also be demanding that those movies aspire to a certain level of quality. The Netflix romantic comedy Always Be My Maybe has so much going for it: Two appealing leads, Ali Wong and Randall Park (both of whom also wrote the script, with Micheal Golamco); an assortment of likable supporting players; and a sly, witty cameo from Keanu Reeves. Some of the writing is sparkling. Joke for joke, there’s probably just enough to keep you laughing. But if Always Be My Maybe isn’t terrible, it’s still lackluster enough to make you feel that underserved and underrepresented audiences deserve more.

Park and Wong play Marcus and Sasha, San Francisco natives who were fast friends as kids and into their teen years, but who have grown apart in adulthood. As a child, Sasha was largely left on her own by her hardworking Chinese-immigrant parents; she found a welcoming warmth in Marcus’s household, and his mother, Judy (Susan Park), would let her help with the cooking: “We Koreans use scissors for everything,” she explains, snipping away at a handful of green onions as she prepares a kimchi stew.

But when Marcus and Sasha are teenagers, Judy dies suddenly. Sasha tries to comfort her best friend; the two end up sleeping together, with disastrous results. Fast-forward 15 years: Sasha has become an enormously successful chef in Los Angeles. Marcus has stayed put in San Francisco, working in his father’s air-conditioning business. At night, he plays in a band that’s going nowhere (it’s called Hello Peril), and that seems to suit him just fine; he believes his widowed dad, Harry (played, charmingly, by James Saito), needs him close by.

Sasha and Marcus reconnect, not-so-accidentally, when Sasha moves back to San Francisco temporarily to start a new restaurant. Things are rocky at first; Marcus has a loopy, artsy girlfriend (Vivian Bang, spacey and bright) who’s nice enough but all wrong for him. Sasha, recently dumped by her way-too-slick fiancé (Daniel Dae Kim), is trying to date—a possible dream guy seems dreamy, until he isn’t. Eventually, as you’ve probably guessed, the sparks reignite between Marcus and Sasha, and the sex is much better the second time around. But the story needs something to drive them apart again: Insert predictable, manufactured crisis here.

The plot points in Always Be My Maybe—the directorial debut of Nahnatchka Khan, who has worked in TV as a writer and producer—are strung together in a way that’s rote and predictable. That’s not to say that romantic comedies need an excessive number of twists; the basic formula is one of the great pleasures of the genre by itself. But you want to enjoy spending time with characters, not feeling that you’re simply stumbling with them toward some predestined finish line. Always Be My Maybe has that made-for-the-small-screen quality, almost a movie but not quite—it feels rushed, rough and a bit too casual, as if the script needed just another draft or two. The sets could have used a few more dollars thrown their way, and some of the scenes might have benefited from a few more takes. It’s hard not to feel that audiences deserves better.

Still, some of the jokes in Always Be My Maybe work marvelously. Marcus’s dad is star-struck when he sees Sasha, rich and successful, for the first time in years: “You’re like our own Asian Oprah!” And then, a beat later, he asks sincerely: “How much money do you have now?” Attending the lavish birthday party her parents are throwing for their eight-year-old godchild, Sasha reflects on her own upbringing, grousing, “Do you know what my parents gave me for my eighth birthday? Flip-flops.” And Reeves is wise, wicked and wonderful in his small role. While dining in one of those tony modern minimalist establishments, he politely quizzes the waiter, “Let me ask, do you have any dishes that play with time? With the concept of time?” It’s one of those perfectly silly lines that hangs there in space, in search of a better movie. For now, it’s parked in Always Be My Maybe, and that will just have to do.

Tanisha Foster, Mom Of Nipsey Hussle’s Daughter, Discusses Their Relationship, Being “Good” With Lauren London

Celebs at Lakers game.

Source: WENN.com / WENN

There has been a lot said and implied about Tanisha Foster ever since rapper Nipsey Hussle passed away. She is the mother of his 10-year-old daughter Emani Asghedom, and she’s currently fighting with the rapper’s sister, Samantha, for custody of the child. Emani has been living with Samantha, and according to TMZ, during a recent court appearance, Tanisha broke down in tears because she claimed she hadn’t seen her daughter in months. Nipsey’s family is reportedly trying to organize visitation for mother and daughter.

The family believes Samantha can provide Emani with the most stable living situation and claim Tanisha has a substance abuse issue that they want to help her deal with. The custody case continues in July, when both sides meet for their next court date.

Until then though, Tanisha is speaking out. She took to Instagram Live on Tuesday to clear up some misconceptions. She also wanted to thank people for their support, saying, “Thank you, I’m going to stay strong. I have to stay strong because I have babies.”

As far as what people think of her lifestyle based on what they see on social media, including when it comes to her social media names, which reference Nipsey, she’s going to keep doing what she wants to do.

“I’m going to live my life,” she said. “It was 16 years. He was 16 years of my life. Do anybody know that?”

“I don’t prove nothing to nobody,” she added. “I don’t have to.”

With that in mind, she said she doesn’t worry about or deal with the “disrespectful sh-t” people say online because when Nipsey was alive, he showed her nothing but love.

“My child’s father didn’t disrespect me,” she said. “I talked to him 30 minutes before he died. How about those apples? Do y’all know that?”

“I don’t feed into negativity, baby. I don’t pay ’em no mind,” she added. “I don’t give a damn about these people. They give a damn about me, though. So all the haters can eat my sh-t, but the people who love me, I love y’all.”

She also wanted to make it clear that despite what she may have said or done in the past in reference to Lauren London (there were some past regrettable tweets and “likes” of negative comments about the actress), they have no issues.

“I don’t have a problem with Lauren. She don’t have a problem with me,” she said. “We good.”

Last time Tanisha spoke out about Nipsey on social media, she found herself heavily criticized by people who felt that since she was his ex, her public condolences were inappropriate and disrespectful to Lauren. Still, she’s always stood by the positive relationship they had and the sentiments she shared.

Good sleep quality and good mood lead to good working memory with age

A team of psychologists has found strong associations between working memory — a fundamental building block of a functioning mind — and three health-related factors: sleep, age, and depressed mood. The team also reports that each of these factors is associated with different aspects of working memory. Working memory is the part of short-term memory that temporarily stores and manages information required for cognitive tasks such as learning, reasoning, and comprehension.

Two HBCU Grads Share Why Vacation Rental Properties are Good Investments

After reaching his breaking point, Carrington Carter, a then-pharmaceutical sales manager, decided to leave the industry to make money off of something he loved, travel. Carter partnered with his former college friend and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity brother Calvin Butts Jr., and the two turned their passion into profit. The HBCU grads shared how they made traveling profitable through their venture Getaway Society and why other African Americans should consider vacation rental properties to be a solid investment.

How did you create Getaway Society?

The founders say that Getaway Society was initially started as a luxury group travel company that creates amazingly memorable experiences, but we decided to pivot out of that industry for a variety of reasons. A year or so later, it was [my] turn to lead the organization of an annual group ski trip in the Poconos. After identifying a house to rent, collecting everyone’s money, and then working with the homeowner to secure the house, he started running the numbers and thought to himself, “Wait a minute, I think I can do this. Why not buy a house and have people pay me to rent it instead of the other way around?”

This was in 2013, so Airbnb, HomeAway, and Vrbo were around, but not nearly as popular as they are now. Shortly after the trip was over, Carrington developed a plan, involved Calvin Butts, Jr. and Jeremiah Myers, two of his colleagues from Hampton University, and Getaway Society was reborn. Our love for travel, exploring the world, and social and family gatherings served as the catalyst to acquiring a network of vacation rental homes to share with like-minded people.

Calvin Butts Jr.: After starting construction on a brand new vacation rental home in the Pocono Mountains in September of 2014, and acquiring another vacation rental home on Martha’s Vineyard in December of 2014, Getaway Society evolved to a premium vacation rental home company, still creating those same amazingly memorable experiences. Now with approximately $ 5 million in properties we own and manage: one home in the Poconos, three on Martha’s Vineyard, and now one in Hilton Head with our acquisition this year, we are excited about the opportunities for growth in this $ 170 billion global vacation rental home market. Our ownership plus management model enables us to provide a consistent, luxury VIP concierge approach to all our homes.

Carter: With Getaway Society, we combined a few things that were exciting and important to us. We’re capitalizing on our growing interest in real estate, in a fun and engaging way. It provides multiple revenue streams and builds wealth, with the ultimate goal of financial freedom for ourselves and generations after we’re gone. It also touches on our interest in traveling and creating new experiences.

Butts: Think about it, many of us have been on a group trip with friends/family and experienced issues or did not know what to expect. At Getaway Society, we try to take the friction out of group travel and obsess over making our guests’ vacation seamless and enjoyable. At every single moment, whether answering questions before their stay, sending check-in/check-out instructions, or responding to any needs during their stay, we are eager to exceed expectations.

Carter: We also take the time to build local connections and relationships with private chefs, restaurants, and golf courses, etc. We have a diverse set of partners, contractors, and vendors, and we also make it a point to help black business owners to scale their business, not just through financial support, but also through teaching and mentoring.

vacation rentals investment

Why should other black investors consider investing in the vacation rental space?

Carter: By owning a vacation rental home, investors can realize rental income, which pays down the mortgage and builds equity in the home. Often homes in resort-type communities appreciate faster than traditional neighborhoods, which builds wealth and increases net worth. Investors can realize capital gains upon sale of the home. Also, investors can use the home as much as they like (preferably in the offseason so rental income isn’t impacted). What a great investment!

Butts: Our favorite part is the “soft ROI” as we like to call it. The home can instantly become a valuable asset that can be leveraged and shared with friends, family, colleagues, and also clients… building better relationships in the process. It’s truly priceless.

How can homeowners use home equity to invest in vacation rentals?

Carter: There are three primary ways that homeowners can use home equity to invest in vacation rentals: cash out refinance; home equity loan; [and] home equity line of credit (HELOC)

Most banks will allow homeowners to tap up to 90% of the value, commonly referred to as 90% LTV (loan-to-value) of a primary residence. However, for an investment property (single/multifamily, commercial property, etc.), most banks will only allow 65%-80% LTV. Example: If your house (primary residence) is worth $ 500,000 and your remaining mortgage balance is $ 250,000, the bank will allow you to borrow up to 90% of the value (90% of $ 500,000 is $ 450,000). Therefore, after subtracting the remaining mortgage balance, you can tap up to $ 200,000 in equity ($ 450,000 – $ 250,000) to buy a vacation rental home, so long as the higher mortgage payment still fits within your DTI (debt-to-income) ratio.

In the above example, in a cash-out refinance, you would convert the home equity into $ 200,000 cash and have a new mortgage balance of $ 450,000, usually at a fixed rate. Using a home equity loan, you would have two mortgages/loans: (1) One with the remaining mortgage balance of $ 250,000, and (2) The other for $ 200,000, which is the amount of home equity you tapped, both likely at fixed rates. In a home equity line of credit (HELOC), the $ 200,000 in equity you converted would essentially work like a credit card with a variable interest rate (probably at least twice the fixed rate). You would have a $ 200,000 limit and could use it and pay it back as needed. There’s typically a draw (borrow) period for 5-10 years in which you’re responsible for interest only or 1% of the balance, then there’s a repayment period of 10-20 years in which you’re responsible for principal and interest.

We have successfully used cash-out refinances, home equity loans, home equity lines of credit, and private equity from investors to fund the expansion of our real estate portfolio starting with one single-family rental and growing to over $ 5 million in real estate in the past seven years.

Butts:  Also, we won’t expound on it here, but aside from home equity, there are also ways to leverage one’s IRA (called a self-directed IRA) to invest in alternative asset classes, such as real estate.

The Good and Bad of Wrap Tops

Wrap tops are a classic we see every season. This season they are abundant, because the waist definition works well with oh-so trendy wide cropped pants, culottes, flares, and fuller skirts. The versions that are defined at the waist complement the high rise trend because the waists are in the same place.

I think of the wrap top as a ‘70s star although it featured well before that decade too. There are four types of wrap tops, three of which define the waist:

  1. Classic wrap tops that are hip bone length or longer with a tie at the waist.
  2. Cropped ballet wrap tops that sit on or above the waist. Fits can be body-con, tailored or fluid.
  3. Faux wrap tops that are usually fitted, and sometimes fluid.
  4. Wrap-front tops that are very fluid and surrender the waist.

The collection below showcases the four versions across assorted fabrics, colours, patterns and sleeve lengths.

On to to the pros and cons.

Good

  • Most wrap tops create a sensational V-neckline that works well on shorter necks, fuller bustlines, and broader shoulders
  • They define the waist and streamline the body thereby creating traditionally flattering proportions
  • They are fab on curvy body types
  • They elongate petites
  • They shorten a very long waist
  • They are worn over bottoms so there is no need to tuck or semi-tuck
  • Faux wraps are handy to layer under jackets and cardigans
  • Cropped ballet versions are a slam dunk combination with flared skirts
  • Fluid wrap-front versions have architectural appeal and are a good look for those who are short-waisted and/or want to conceal midsection bits
  • They can look gorgeously soft and pretty

Bad

  • Wrap tops can create an unflattering, impractical and uncomfortable fit over the bust when they’re not cut exactly right
  • V-necklines can be too low and fall open, although you could try a cami or adding a snap
  • V-necklines can be wide and unflattering on those who don’t wear them well
  • The ties of real wraps can be fussy, too long, and get in the way of toppers
  • The tie can accentuate a short waist
  • Wrap-front versions can overwhelm a small frame and narrow shoulders, and slide around the body
  • They sometimes look overly classic

Generally, the wrap top is like the little girl with the curl. When it’s good, it’s VERY good. But when it’s bad, it’s horrid. And that’s exactly how my clients feel about it. The intermittent reinforcement of finding an absolutely fabulous wrap top once in a while keeps the silhouette on their radar.

I don’t wear V-necks well unless the V-shape is created by a collared shirt or blouse, so that keeps me away from most wrap tops. Sometimes the V’s are very shallow or raised at the shoulder neck points which improves proportions for my body type. I also like some of the newer versions with high necklines. I fancy the structure of the tie at the waist and don’t find it fussy. I used to have gorgeous wraps with shallow V-necks made of mesh, and have worn cropped body-con ballet wrap tops with skirts.

When the right wrap top comes my way, I love it. How about you?

The Good News About Money This Week

WHAT DID WE LEARN LAST WEEK THAT’S A POSITIVE ON THE ECONOMIC FRONT?

According to the Commerce Department, the U.S.gross domestic product rose at a 3.2 percent annual rate in the first three months of the year. This is an impressive number, considering many economists and analysts have been concerned about the possibility of a recession in the past few months.

REMIND US WHAT GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT IS, AND WHY IT IS AN IMPORTANT THING TO MEASURE?

Gross domestic product, or GDP, the value of all goods and services produced in the U.S. Put simply, it measures the entire output of the country’s economy, and it is how we gauge economic growth or contraction. When looking at GDP growth, any growth rate above 3% annually is a good number for developed economies like the US or the EU.

WERE WE EXPECTING TO SEE SUCH POSITIVE GROWTH?

Most analysts did not expect such a great number this quarter. Just recently, the Atlanta Federal Reserve had projected Q1 GDP growth would be just .1%, and for good reason! They may be distant memories now, but in the first quarter, we had an extended partial government shutdown, a spell of crippling cold weather due to the polar vortex, and a worrisome February jobs report. All of these followed on significant stock market jitters at the close of 2018. Taken together, these seemed to foreshadow an economic slowdown.

SO WHAT IS DRIVING GDP GROWTH?

Trade was a big factor. In the first three months of this year, the value of goods we imported fell as a result of concerns about tariffs on goods from China and other countries. At the same time, the US exported more goods and services. This provided a boost for American manufacturers, as did greater inventory investment, which is essentially companies buying goods and services to produce their own products.

Solid consumer spending and state and local government spending on projects like roads also contributed to the strong GDP growth in the first quarter. Finally, the Federal Reserve’s decision to shelve its plans for continued interest rate hikes this year helped boost investors and corporate sector confidence.

ARE THERE WARNING SIGNS FOR THE MONTHS AHEAD?

The housing market continued to be a drag on the larger economy last quarter. Trade and inventory spending in a given quarter can distort the longer-term trends in the economy. That may be true here, as the trade landscape is very uncertain at the moment and quarters with high inventory spending are often followed by quarters with lower spending. Rising oil prices could also hit consumers and businesses alike. Finally, wage growth and consumer confidence will weigh heavily on whether consumer spending continues to be strong.

WHAT DOES THIS NEWS MEAN FOR EVERYDAY PEOPLE?

Between this strong GDP number on Friday and the outstanding corporate earnings reports from last week, anyone who owns stock has benefited. The S&P 500 and the NASDAQ hit new highs, and the Dow flirted with another record close. Overall, a strong economy should continue to keep unemployment low, which in turn should fuel higher wage growth for workers. Let’s hope the good news continues.

The Good & Bad of Jumpsuits and Rompers

Jumpsuits and rompers are all-in-one garments. Somewhat like a dress where the bottom part resembles pants instead of a skirt. Rompers have shorts on the bottom, whereas jumpsuits are cropped pants or full-length pants on the bottom. Rompers are sometimes also called playsuits.

Jumpsuits and rompers come in all sorts of colours, patterns, fabrics, and silhouettes. They can also be dressy or casual. Here are some examples.

Jumpsuits and rompers are an acquired taste because, like most wardrobe items, they have their fab and not so fab attributes.

The Good

  • They are an easy one piece pull-on-and-go that requires little thought and styling
  • No need to tuck, semi-tuck, or worry about a too short or too long untucked top
  • They have a playful and fun Modern and Modern Retro integrity
  • Thanks to the pants, they’re not as breezy, revealing and impractical as a dress can be
  • They make a unique and interesting statement because there are fewer people wearing them

The Bad

  • They can sometimes look too child-like and juvenile
  • They can be hard to fit, because the length and width of the waist has to be in exactly the right place
  • They are EXTREMELY impractical when you need the loo

I have a jumpsuit, which you might remember from this old outfit post. It’s four years old and I’ve worn it twice because it’s THE fussiest, most uncomfortable, and most impractical item in my wardrobe. I thought it would be fun to wear because I love the glam ‘70s, but all it does is drive me bananas. I have to wear it with two and a half inch heels that I no longer own or wear. Going to the loo means I have to strip to my undies leaving the jumpsuit rumpled at my feet, which is a lot of fabric because of the long flared legs. In short, it’s an awful wearing experience. Yet, I keep the jumpsuit because it’s a spectacular and well-made designer piece. I keep on thinking I’ll haul it out for some glam occasion, in which case I’ll need to hem the length to wear with one and a quarter inch heels.

Jumpsuit - 1

Jumpsuit - 2

I LOVE the look of jumpsuits for the fabulous reasons I’ve described up top. They’re such a fun, unique and easy piece if you’re fine with the impractical part when going to the loo. I don’t know if the experience of wearing this jumpsuit has put me off for life, but I guess there’s only one way to find out. I’ll need to try a shorter version that I can wear with flats, and that isn’t as big a rumpled mess on the ground when I need the loo. Maybe a boiler suit of sorts, which I happily wore in the ’80s.

Over to you. What’s your take on jumpsuits and rompers, and do you wear them?

Good News In The Stock Market: How You Can Take Advantage

What’s the good news in the stock market?

I am happy to join Money Monday this morning with good news, and that is not an April Fool’s joke. On Friday, the US markets closed out a great quarter. The S&P 500 rose 0.7% to 2834.4, closing out the quarter up 13% for the quarter, its best showing since 2009. The Dow Jones Industrial Average on Friday hit 25928.68, finishing up 11% over the last three months. And the Nasdaq Composite added 16% since January 1, topping 7729. And the Russell 2000 – an index of smaller market cap companies – has its best start of the year since 1991. Overall, investors have a lot to smile about so far this year.

What is behind this investor optimism?

There are a few factors that contributed to the first quarter rally. First, stocks were down sharply at the end of 2019, and many believe the selloff might have sharper than the economic news warranted. Second, investors are reacting positively to the Fed decision, along with other central banks, to pause additional interest rate hikes as the economy has shifted down a gear. The markets are also rallying around the fact that the US economy remains a bright spot in the global economy. Brexit is shaking the UK and Germany’s economy – the biggest in the European Union – has slowed dramatically. China’s growth has cooled as well. So, while the economy here at home isn’t breaking records, it is steady, and that has helped to boost investor confidence.

Is it just select sectors that are giving the markets a boost?

No. Over the past three months, we have seen good news out of all sectors. In fact, all 11 sectors of the S&P 500 sectors kicked off the first quarter higher. That is something we have not seen in 5 years. Now, this is not to say some didn’t do better than others. The tech sector and energy companies started 2019 particularly strong. But we did see gains across the board in Q1.

Are there any clouds on the horizon? Can the bull market continue?

There are some concerns that are weighing on investors’ minds. First, how much has the US economy downshifted? We have seen consumer confidence soften, and with it, consumer spending, which is up slightly after being down at the end of 2018. The Bureau of Economic Analysis also revised GDP growth down to 2.2% from the initial estimate of 2.6% in the final three months of 2018. Many also believe the stimulus effects of the corporate and individual tax cuts are wearing off. Finally, some are concerned about the recent divergence between the stock and bond market yields. They typically rise together when investors are confident.

That said, there is no way of knowing what is around the corner! Perhaps Brexit comes to a quick resolution, or that the US and China reach an agreement to end the trade war. We could see investors continue their optimist streak. And the end of the day, trees don’t grow to the sky, and there will be a correction. We just don’t know when that will be. You simply cannot predict the future.

As we celebrate a strong quarter, what should we keep in mind for our portfolio?

As you know, at Ariel we believe slow and steady wins the race. The best thing you can do is to consistently save and contribute to your retirement and take a long-term view. Do not try to time the market. And remember, never be afraid to ask questions. If the ups and downs of the past few months make you nervous, I would encourage you to speak with your financial advisor or the company that manages your retirement account. You can never have enough information, Tom, and the beginning of the year is as good a time as any to review your retirement account and ensure remain on track.

John Oliver and Janet From The Good Place Warn About Mobile Homes on Last Week Tonight

“Mobile homes were perfected by humans, but invented by snails,” explained John Oliver on Last Week Tonight. And because 20 million Americans live in mobile homes he focused Sunday night’s episode on them.

Mobile homes cost significantly less than conventional homes, making them one of the last few affordable housing options around. “It can be hard to tell the difference between mobile homes and manufactured homes,” Oliver said. “Just like it’s hard to tell the difference between Jessica Chastain and Bryce Dallas Howard. The difference is, like a mobile home, Bryce Dallas Howard is assembled off-site, then placed on wheels and moved to her permanent location.”

Also like Howard and Chastain, mobile homes are popular—so popular that they have become a target for private equity firms, who have started purchasing mobile home sites. As Oliver put it: “The homes of some the poorest people in America are being snapped up by some of the richest people in America.” Mobile home parks have earned a lot of money for the Carlyle Group and Warren Buffett, who owns Clayton mobile homes, which made $ 911 million pre-tax dollars last year. Those unlikely bedfellows have led to conflict in the form of rising rents and fees that have left already impoverished Americans with even fewer options.

For mobile homes owners, the “cars you live in” are reportedly an investment that always go down in value. They are an even worse investment if you don’t own the land that the mobile home is parked on, because “mobile homes are mobile about as much king crabs are actually kings,” said Oliver.

That lack of mobility of tenants is attractive to investors, because they quite literally have a captive audience. As Frank Rolfe, a mobile home investor, put it, buying a mobile home park is like owning “a Waffle House where everyone is chained to the booths,” which Oliver suggested was a good idea for Jordan Peele’s next horror movie.

To warn people about the risks of investing in a mobile home, Oliver and The Good Place’s D’Arcy Carden made an honest ad for potential home buyers.

PARENTAL UPDATE:

Getting Bored In Your Relationship? That Could Be A Good Thing

black couple

Source: Hero Images / Getty Images

In the rush of schedules, house chores, careers, and Netflix, relationships can get really stagnant. And that’s super normal. We often equate boredom in a relationship to something terrible, but in reality, it’s a natural part of partnership growth.

Via Madamenoire:

“Over time, we get more comfortable in a relationship,” Marisa T. Cohen, an associate professor of psychology at St. Francis College and author of “From First Kiss to Forever” told Washington Post.

“We get set in our ways, and with that comes a wonderful sense of security and trust in our partners.”

But the monotony can start to weigh on folks who see themselves as more adventurous. The routine “may be unnerving to some people, especially those who want or expect that exciting and passionate feeling they experienced at the beginning of the relationship,” Cohen explained.

And let’s be honest, the rush of newness can be addicting–especially when we haven’t felt it in a while due to being in a long-term relationship. The accessibility we now have with dating apps and platforms also makes jumping ship easier than ever before.

“With the rise in swipe-based sites and the ‘gamification’ of dating, part of the appeal for people may be the thrill of the chase, or meeting new people on a regular basis,” Cohen describes.

In the rush of schedules, house chores, careers, and Netflix, relationships can get really stagnant.

“You can have a fear of missing out on something ‘better,’ making the wrong decision, or being stuck or trapped in a relationship that isn’t right,” Rebekah Montgomery, a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice in Washington told Washington Post.

But all of these feeling and anxiety are real and expected. But the beauty is, if you’ve reached boredom and optimal comfort with your partner, you probably have really invested and built the core foundation of any connection: love and commitment. You may be lacking a little passion, but that aspect is easier to awaken. Humans are endlessly deep and you have to work to create opportunities to get to know your partner on a deeper level.

“When you transition to relationship mode, you are essentially focusing your time and energy on one partner, creating a deep, intimate space with them,” Cohen said of this relationship space.

“Being with someone who is soft, kind and supportive is pretty stable; it’s not the roller-coaster ride, or anxiety and butterflies of wondering what’s going to happen next. It might, at first, even feel a little boring.”

But you can offset the boredom with distance, travel, pursuing separate hobbies and bringing it back home–all of these moments will help turn up the heat. Don’t be bored. Get creative in loving your mate in different ways.

Taraji P. Henson: “All Is Good On ‘Empire”

Despite all the drama surrounding Jussie Smollett, Empire star Taraji P. Henson says everything is just “loverly” on the set.

While promoting her new film, The Best of Enemies in New York on Sunday, Henson confided to ET that “it’s a great atmosphere” on the set of the Fox TV show.

She went on to say that the mood on set during the production the popular series hasn’t changed much in the wake of  co-star Smollett’s high-profile legal situation. Even though she wouldn’t comment on his case, she did say she’s excited for what’s in store for the remainder of season five.

“Cookie’s on a really emotional roller coaster this year,” Henson teased, referring to her iconic Empire character, Cookie Lyon. “She’s finding herself.”

Henson admits that because they are finished filming this season, she knows which Empire character is in the coffin — a major character’s death has been previewed — but says she’s ain’t spilling the beans.

Smollett, who is still appearing on episodes of the show that were shot before his alleged attack on Jan. 29, has reportedly been written out of the last two episodes.

Last Thursday, the 36-year-old actor pleaded not guilty to the 16 felony counts he was indicted on earlier this month.

Aside from her starring role on Empire, Henson was in NYC doing press for her new film, The Best of Enemies.

Henson plays Ann Atwater, a civil rights activist in Durham, North Carolina who frequently faces off against the local leader of the Klu Klux Klan, C. P. Ellis (Sam Rockwell). In a twist that could only happen in real life, the ideological enemies are forced to work in close quarters when they have to co-chair a community meeting on the mandated desegregation of their city’s school system.

Henson says she was drawn to the project because the message is “very relevant” to the times we’re living in now.

“You know, racism is still here and we’re still dealing with and that’s why these movies are important. And the reason why I love this movie is the approach is different,” Henson shared. “Ann realized that she had to change her approach. [She and Ellis] were both… very passionate about what they believed, but on opposite sides of the spectrum. And it wasn’t until she fell back and she had to see him as a human [that she realized] barking and yelling at each other, that goes nowhere. That’s hate. Hate never wins.”

Look for The Best of Enemies in theaters April 5.

Here’s The Good News About Minimum Wage

WHAT’S THE NEWS ON MINIMUM WAGE?

Put simply, we are seeing progress around the country when it comes to raising the minimum wage. Since 2016, five states and the District of Columbia have raised their wage floor to $ 15 per hour. My home state of Illinois was the latest state to get on the bandwagon, and other states like Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Hawaii are considering legislation as well.

And a number of states have moved to increase their wages to $ 12 an hour in recent years. Combined, these efforts have the potential to benefit millions of workers.

THE FEDERAL MINIMUM WAGE IS CURRENTLY AT $ 7.25. WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME WE SAW THE NATIONAL MINIMUM WAGE RISE?

The last time the federal minimum wage was raised, to the current $ 7.25 per hour rate, was in July of 2009. Put simply, we have not seen the federal minimum wage adjusted in the decade since the financial crisis. Since then we’ve had positive economic growth, which has been accompanied by inflation.

This means goods cost more, and those dependent on the federal minimum wage jobs have seen their paychecks remain stagnant. Because of this, supporters of minimum wage hikes have turned to the states. And based upon the changes we have seen in the last few years – from referendums to legislation – proponents of a minimum wage have made significant progress.

THERE IS ALWAYS OPPOSITION TO MINIMUM WAGE HIKES. WHAT ARE THE ECONOMICS OF THESE POLICY CHANGES?

Supporters of increases in the wage floor argue that increasing pay for minimum wage workers reduces income inequality and assure that full-time workers with families don’t live in poverty. But those in opposition to minimum wage hikes contend they lead to job losses, higher prices, and hurt smaller businesses who have low profit margins already.

Interestingly, a number of recent studies have found that job losses resulting from minimum wage hikes are significantly smaller than many previously believed them to be. However, the statistic that really sticks out in my mind involves a historical comparison: adjusted for inflation, the current minimum wage is lower than it was in the 1960s.

It is often overlooked that the federal minimum wage, and most state minimum wage rates, are not indexed to inflation. This means that as the cost of living rises and the wage floor remains the same, minimum wage workers get left behind.

WHO WOULD BENEFIT FROM A MINIMUM WAGE OF $ 15?

Great question, Tom. The Economic Policy Institute ran the numbers and the findings were really interesting. According to EPI, the typical worker who would benefit from a $ 15 minimum wage is a 35-year-old woman with some college-level coursework who works full-time. While many think of young people when they hear the phrase minimum wage, less than 10 percent of those who would benefit are teenagers.

By comparison, more than half are adults between the ages of 25 and 54. Nearly 6 in 10 (58 percent) are women, a full 60 percent work full-time, and 28 percent have children. And communities of color would see significant upside. Thirty-eight percent of African-American workers and one-third of Latino workers would get a raise if the federal minimum wage were increased to $ 15.

AND HOW WOULD WORKERS BENEFIT FROM A $ 15 MINIMUM WAGE NATIONWIDE?

The House of Representatives has proposed the Raise the Wage Act of 2019, which would gradually lift the minimum wage to $ 15 per hour by 2024, and the Economic Policy Institute has found the benefits would be truly staggering. Forty million workers— 26.6 percent of the U.S. workforce – would see a pay raise. That includes two-thirds (67.3 percent) of the working poor in our country. Full-time minimum wage earners would see an extra $ 3,000 a year. Finally, a $ 15 minimum wage by 2024 would generate $ 120 billion in higher wages and potentially boost the economy as workers were able to spend more.
