China Lashes Out at Houston Rockets Over GM’s Hong Kong Tweet

Troy Taormina/Reuters

Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey kicked off a firestorm over the weekend after he tweeted out support for the ongoing pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, writing, “Fight for Freedom. Stand with Hong Kong.”

The tweet was quickly deleted, but not before China took note. On Sunday, the Rockets’ Chinese sponsors, sportswear brand Li-Ning and Shanghai Pudong Development Bank (SPD Bank) Credit Card Center, announced that they were suspending their support of the team. China’s basketball association also said it will stop cooperating with the Texas team.

Soon after, the Chinese government got involved. “We are deeply shocked by the erroneous comments on Hong Kong made by Mr. Daryl Morey,” the Chinese consulate in Houston wrote in a statement on Sunday. “We have lodged representations and expressed strong dissatisfaction with the Houston Rockets, and urged the latter to correct the error and take immediate concrete measures to eliminate the adverse impact.”

Elvis Presley Stayed at the Celestial Suites Penthouse in Houston. Now It’s Locked Up, ‘Frozen In Time’

Photo Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily Beast

On December 18, 1969, Judge Roy Hofheinz dressed in the costume of a British barrister,  powdered wig and all, entered his new Astroworld Hotel in Houston, and rode the sparkling glass elevator up to the penthouse.

When the doors opened, one can only imagine the delight and glee the judge felt as he surveyed the riot of colors, outlandish decor schemes, and luxurious touches that could have stepped right off the big screen. (In fact, some of the accent pieces had done just that.)

It was exactly what he wanted for his new home, and he was eager to show it off that night at the press preview-cum-housewarming party.

Dionne Warwick Thinks The Whitney Houston Hologram Tour Is A ‘Stupid’ Idea

Women World Awards 2004

The news of a Whitney Houston hologram tour being in the works has been met with mixed feelings from fans, but not from her family. Houston’s cousin Dionne Warwick isn’t too fond of the idea.

“I haven’t a clue as to what that is. It’s surprising to me,” she told  Entertainment Tonight on Thursday. “I don’t know what it is. I think it’s stupid, but whatever it is that’s what it is.”

It was announced earlier this week that Houston’s sister-in-law, Pat Houston, has signed a deal with Primary Wave Music Publishing to work on the hologram tour as well as an album of unreleased music. Houston told The New York Times that a musical featuring her hits. is also being developed. Primary Wave will now acquire 50 percent of Whitney Houston’s estate’s assets.

Pat Houston, who is the executor of Whitney Houston’s estate, feels that this is best time to remind the world of the late singer’s greatness since her legacy was tarnished due to her drug abuse.

“The hologram has taken precedence over everything,” Houston said. “Before she passed, there was so much negativity around the name; it wasn’t about the music anymore. People had forgotten how great she was. They let all the personal things about her life outweigh why they fell in love with her in the first place.”

The hologram will perform hits like “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)” and “The Greatest Love of All.”

Government Shutdown Forces Houston Airport to Close TSA Checkpoint

David J. Phillip

The government shutdown dealt yet another blow to airport security on Sunday, with officials at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport announcing they have been forced to close the security checkpoint in one terminal due to a shortage of TSA agents to screen passengers.

The decision comes two days after airport officials in Miami took similar precautions over the weekend, announcing that one of the smaller terminals at Miami International Airport would close early each day starting on Saturday.

In Houston, officials at the main airport serving the nation’s fourth largest city announced that “due to staffing issues associated with the partial shutdown of the federal government,” a TSA checkpoint and the ticketing counter in Terminal B closed at 3:30 p.m and would remain closed for the rest of the day. After assessing the situation, authorities said Sunday night that the terminal would remain closed at least into Monday. The officials encouraged passengers to “arrive early and give themselves extra time to check in for their flights and to clear the security checkpoints.”

McNair was 80.
