DMX Checks Into Rehab Facility, Cancels Shows

10th Annual ONE Musicfest

Source: Prince Williams / Getty

Prayers up to Dark Man X. Yonkers rapper DMX, born Earl Simmons, has reportedly returned for a stint in rehab.

X’s handlers made the announcement via his Instagram page on Saturday (Oct. 12).

“In his ongoing commitment to putting family and sobriety first, DMX has checked himself into a rehab facility. He apologizes for his cancelled shows and thanks his fans for their continued support,” read the caption of a photo of X posted on the ‘Gram.

Reportedly, X was scheduled to perform with Three 6 Mafia in Memphis yesterday and at the Rolling Loud Festival in NYC today (Oct. 13).

The news comes after X was AWOL from a 35th Anniversary of Def Jam party he was scheduled to perform at last week. X was released from prison, after serving time for tax evasion, in January. His last rehab stint that we know of was in 2017, when things were going so well he opted to stay an additional 30 days.

Get well soon.

Review: El Camino Transforms Breaking Bad‘s Jesse Pinkman Into an Action Hero for the Ages

The last time we saw Jesse Pinkman, in the series finale of Breaking Bad, he’d just escaped a massacre. After refusing to put a mortally wounded Walter White (Bryan Cranston) out of his misery—an act that would’ve added one more item to the long list of sins he’d committed under the influence of the meth kingpin who used to be his high school science teacher—Jesse (Aaron Paul) drove the nearest El Camino straight through a chain-link fence, hit the road and never looked back. His symbolic shackles broken, he laughed and sobbed, his grizzled face filling the frame. By then, he was a traumatized, nearly feral mess. But he was free.

Unlike Walt’s inevitable death, Jesse’s ending was morally ambiguous: manipulated by a man who’d come to represent evil incarnate but still personally implicated in horrific violence, Jesse had also suffered terribly for his transgressions. Like Dorian Gray’s portrait, his face registered the blackening of Walt’s soul. So it seemed somewhat appropriate that Jesse’s fate remained unsettled. As Paul explained to TIME in a recent interview, “You’d like to think he’s riding off into the sunset, but you know life isn’t going to be that easy for him.” Sure, he made it out of five seasons alive. Surviving much longer, however, would be a test of his intelligence, resourcefulness and—most of all—his determination to live a better life.

Six years later, Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan is back with the results. The gripping El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, out now on Netflix and showing through Sunday, Oct. 13 in some theaters, picks up where the series left off. Jesse—who spent the episodes leading up to the finale in a box, held prisoner by the disconcertingly cheerful Todd (Jesse Plemons) and his gang—has to get out of Albuquerque before law enforcement can track him down. But first he needs to clean himself up, ditch the El Camino, scrape together enough cash to make a fresh start and say goodbye to the few people he loves whose lives Walt has spared.

His first stop is the home of his old friend Skinny Pete (Charles Baker)—a small-time criminal who is, predictably, in the midst of a video-game marathon with their pal Badger (Matt L. Jones). Despite its action-thriller pace and scale, one of the greatest pleasures of El Camino is that it still makes space for the funny banter that cut through the bleakness of Walter White’s descent. If Walt is Breaking Bad’s Richard III, Pete and Badger are its Shakespearean fools, cutting the tension with endearingly dopey exchanges like: “You couldn’t drive Miss Daisy.” “Whoever that is.”

El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie
Ben Rothstein / NetflixMatt L. Jones as Badger and Charles Baker as Skinny Pete in ‘El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie’

Yet these early scenes, which ease viewers into a structure that braids Jesse’s efforts to skip town together with generous flashbacks that fill in crucial blanks from his past, aren’t just comic relief. They demonstrate how far our hero has drifted, over the course of the show’s two-year timeframe, from these simple screw-ups, who come off as disarmingly innocent by comparison. “You’re my hero,” Pete insists as Jesse staggers around the house in post-traumatic shock, devouring food like a wild animal and behaving as though a SWAT team might burst in at any second. Though they can’t possibly understand what he’s survived, the tenderness these guys show Jesse—who watched helplessly as his so-called partner Walt systematically destroyed just about everything that was good in his life—is heartbreaking.

Paul earned three Emmys for his supporting role on Breaking Bad, and in El Camino he delivers a mesmerizing lead performance that proves he deserves a spot on Hollywood’s A-list. (In truth, it should put him in the Oscar conversation, but this is a TV sequel distributed by Netflix that won’t meet the Academy’s eligibility requirements.) Fully re-inhabiting a role he hadn’t played for years, he endows Jesse with the same mix of (waning) goofiness and (escalating) existential terror that propelled him through the finale. Yet the movie, which contains as many nail-biting moments as the show used to spread over a full season, gives him something new to be: an action hero—albeit a uniquely conflicted, exhausted and in many ways broken one.

It’s to the credit of Gilligan, who wrote and directed the film, that it feels like a continuation of Breaking Bad without also feeling like merely an extra-long TV episode. It’s a true movie, with the taut pacing, satisfying conclusion and grand visual scale that distinction implies. The big screen does justice to the same detailed sound design and nimble camera work—replete with destabilizing effects such as scenes that open from bizarre vantage points or follow heretofore unknown characters—that made for one of the most cinematic series in the history of television. In place of the show’s deep orange mesas and azure sky, Gilligan offers desiccated, beautifully barren beige vistas, as though this city in the desert has been drained of all possibility for Jesse. Even if you have a Netflix subscription, this harsh splendor is worth the price of a movie ticket. (Whether or not you make it to the theater, please—please—don’t watch this on your phone.)

Aside from a few unnecessary character cameos, most of which you could easily guess but none of which I will spoil here, El Camino avoids the pitfalls of this year’s many feature-length sequels to TV shows. There’s little of the fan-service inanity that abounded in the Downton Abbey film and none of the sentimental self-indulgence of Transparent’s insufferable musical finale. Like AMC’s Breaking Bad prequel Better Call Saul, as well as morally flexible saloon owner Al Swearengen’s (Ian McShane) storyline in HBO’s Deadwood: The Movie, it completes the unfinished portrait of a character who remains on viewers’ minds.

There’s a unique potency to the connections we form with the fictional people on TV, which at its best combines the vividness of movies, the intimacy of books and the seriality of comics. Sometimes we remember them with the same wistfulness that colors our memories of friends with whom we’ve lost touch. That goes double for Jesse Pinkman, an audience surrogate who served as the tortured conscience of a criminal demimonde populated by milquetoast psychos (Walt, Todd, Gus Fring) and sad, irredeemably compromised men like Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) and Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks).

Joining a Breaking Bad Televisual Universe that is also a moral universe, one that weighs the soul of each protagonist in turn, El Camino makes space in the trilogy for hope. In Walt, Gilligan illustrated how a meek facade can conceal bottomless malice. Saul Goodman is what happens when a person with good intentions is incapable of following society’s rules. But going into El Camino, Jesse’s soul still hangs in the balance. In order to escape his old life, he’s going to have to prove that he’s smart and strong enough to make it on his own. And we can’t help but worry for him—in part because it’s so easy to imagine ourselves behind the wheel of that getaway car. What choice do we have but to see his story through to the end?

How Rudy Giuliani’s Bid to Discredit Mueller Played Into Impeachment Probe

Photo Illustration by Lyne Lucien/The Daily Beast/Getty

More than a year ago, Donald Trump’s personal attorneys Rudy Giuliani and Jay Sekulow began working, with the president’s sign-off, on a “counter-report” to push back against Special Counsel Robert Mueller. The report, which stretched more than 100 pages, scrutinized the initiation of the Mueller probe.

Despite the resources devoted to it and the hype by Giuliani and Trump allies, the document was never released. But it’s still proven explosive, as one of its authors says some of its contents formed the genesis of the single biggest political crisis of Trump’s turbulent presidency.

“That outline that I gave to the State Department was originally prepared to be included in the counter-report,” Giuliani told The Daily Beast late Thursday night. “It was prepared to provide a guide for text that could be included in the [final] counter-report.”

FIFA Says Women ‘Have to Be Allowed’ Into Iran’s Soccer Stadiums

FIFA said Saturday in an unambiguous statement that Iran must admit women into its soccer games. The sport’s global governing body stated “women have to be allowed into football stadiums in Iran. For all football matches.”

FIFA President Gianni Infantino said in a conference on Sunday that Iranian officials assured FIFA that “women will be allowed to enter football stadiums,” according to the BBC. “This is something very important — in 40 years this has not happened, with a couple of exceptions.”

The announcement comes the same month that a female Iranian soccer fan set herself on fire, after learning that she could be imprisoned for six months because she snuck into a stadium to watch a match, according to the Associated Press. Sahar Khodayari, 29, was detained by police after an altercation and released after three nights in jail, pending her court case, the AP reported. Her self immolation prompted international condemnation, with human rights organizations calling Iran’s policy on gender in soccer stadiums a “discriminatory ban.”

“What happened to Sahar Khodayari is heart-breaking and exposes the impact of the Iranian authorities’ appalling contempt for women’s rights in the country,” Phillip Luther, Amnesty International’s Middle East and North Africa Research and Advocacy Director, said in a statement two weeks ago in reaction to Khodayari’s death. “Her only ‘crime’ was being a woman in a country where women face discrimination that is entrenched in law and plays out in the most horrific ways imaginable in every area of their lives, even sports.”

Luther’s statement said that it appears “Iran is the only country in the world that stops and punishes women seeking to enter football stadiums” and that “the discriminatory ban must end immediately.”

FIFA and the Iranian government seem closer to doing just that.

“I am hopeful that the Iranian Federation and the Iranian authorities were receptive to our repeated calls to address this unacceptable situation,” FIFA president Infantino previously said in a statement on Thursday.

FIFA said in its statement on Saturday said that there are “no noteworthy operational obstacles” to these changes being adopted at the Azadi stadium in Tehran as soon as Oct. 10, when Iran is scheduled to play Cambodia for a World Cup qualifier match for the tournament in Qatar in 2022.

This is not the first time that FIFA has become embroiled in controversy about women’s issues in Iran. Back in 2011, critics decried the organization’s decision to ban the Iranian women’s national soccer team from an Olympic qualifier because of their headscarves. The team ended up forfeiting a game against Jordan because they did not want to play without their headscarves.

Kim Kardashian Turns Alice Marie Johnson Into an Advertisement for Her Shapewear Line

SKIMS

Last year, Kim Kardashian did an objectively Good Thing when she successfully lobbied for the release of Alice Marie Johnson. The 63-year-old grandmother had been locked in an Alabama federal prison since 1996, over a first-time, nonviolent drug charge. Johnson had been sentenced to life without parole.

No matter anyone’s thoughts on the Kardashians, there was little snickering at Kim’s motives. The reality TV star and entrepreneur was laudably trying to reform a broken prison system and heal one of the nearly half million lives broken by the pointless war on drugs. A gold star achievement for sure, if they still give those out in law school.

One year and a month after Johnson’s release, the former inmate popped up on the official Instagram page of Skims, Kardashian’s Spanx-but-not-Spanx line of shapewear. Under the guise of profiling “real women, real stories” (as opposed to those pesky fake women), Kardashian enlisted Johnson and a slew of non-models to hawk the fancy girdles.

Strictly’s Katya Jones ‘gets partnered with Paralympian Will Bayley’ after being reinstated into the main line-up

STRICTLY pro Katya Jones has been paired with Paralympian table tennis player Will Bayley for the upcoming series.

The Russian dancer, 30, who recently split from husband Neil Jones, was only reinstated in the main line-up following last year’s Seann Walsh snog scandal after bosses booked an extra male contestant.

A source told the Mirror: “Katya and Will have been put together, they are in early group rehearsals and bosses will be looking out for which couples gel. Quite often the pairings do stick.”

The BBC declined to comment when contacted by The Sun Online.

Just days ago The Sun Online exclusively revealed how Neil and Katya had been planning their shock split for nearly a month.

According to new documents, the professional dancers set up their own individual companies weeks ago, despite always working jointly during their 11 years together.

On 31 July, Neil set up Jonesey Ltd, and just under a week later, on August 5, Katya set up her own firm Sokolova Ltd, which is her maiden name.

Both are classified as ‘amusement and recreation activities’ businesses.

Until that point, the pair, who had been married for six years and together since 2008, had always been a tight duo.

They had their own dance studio and events space called The Joneses’ Studio, in Alton, Hampshire, which hosts dance classes and lessons.

They shared a dancing school together

But now Neil is striking out on his own

They also had their own website neilandkatya.com which advertised all their work, including their most recent performance in June where Neil, 37, had directed and they both starred in a show called Somnium: A Dancer’s Dream at the Sadler’s Wells Theatre, London.

Despite most Strictly dancers earning over £30,000 from appearing on the show, Katya and Neil’s joint performing arts company, The Joneses’ Ltd, was barely profitable, only having £4,136 in reserves last year.

Ever since the split was announced last Sunday, fans have been wondering if it had been a business arrangement since Katya, 30, was caught kissing her former Strictly dance partner, comedian Seann Walsh, last October.

One said: “I think this was a marriage of convenience to be honest. It was weird how Neil was so unbothered by the kiss.”

Yet they could be taking a leaf out of the book of their good friends, Karen and Kevin Clifton, who managed to divorce on good terms even amid adultery claims.

For a long time after their split, Karen and Kevin ran The Clifton Academy – a dance school in Grimsby – together until Kevin resigned as a director in June.

The Joneses’ Studio is a similar concept, but has even more money making activities going on such as hosting weddings, meets and greets with Neil and Katya, and even choreographing newly weds’ first dance.

Katya and Neil carefully planned their split and how to split their businesses
Instagram

In a statement posted on both their Instagrams, they claimed they wanted to remain a team, saying: “Hi everyone. As our fans and loyal supporters you are really important to us and so we wanted to let you know some news.

“After 11 years we have made the mutual decision to separate.

“We will always love each other, just in a different way as friends.

“This will never change what a great team we make and we are really proud of everything we have achieved together.”

Special Prosecutor Named To Look Into Jussie Smollett Case

CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago judge on Friday named a special prosecutor to look into why state prosecutors abruptly dropped charges against actor Jussie Smollett that accused him of staging a racist, anti-gay attack against himself.

Cook County Judge Michael Toomin’s appointment of former U.S. Attorney Dan Webb raises the possibility that the special prosecutor could bring new charges against the former “Empire” actor. Smollett, who is black and gay, maintains that the January attack was real and wasn’t staged.

The Cook County state’s attorney’s office charged Smollett in February with 16 counts of disorderly conduct for allegedly staging the attack and lying about it to investigators. However, it dropped all of the charges a month later with little explanation, angering city officials and the police.

Webb told reporters after Friday’s hearing that he was heading into the investigation with no preconceived notions about an outcome.

“I don’t know where this case is going. The facts will take me where I they take me,” he said, adding that he couldn’t provide a precise timetable but would move the investigation along as quickly as possible.

Webb is arguably Chicago’s most high-profile defense attorney of the last few decades and has been tapped five times previously to serve as a special prosecutor. His high-profile clients have included former Illinois Gov. George Ryan. As U.S. attorney in Chicago in the 1980s, he led the prosecution of several dozen corrupt Cook County judges, lawyers and police officers.

A former state appellate judge, Sheila O’Brien, petitioned for a special prosecutor, leading to Toomin’s surprise ruling in June that one was warranted.

Smollett told police he was walking home early on Jan. 29 when two masked men approached him, made racist and homophobic insults, beat him and looped a noose around his neck before fleeing. He said his assailants, at least one of whom he said was white, told him he was in “MAGA country” — a reference to President Donald Trump’s campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again.”

Several weeks later, authorities alleged that Smollett had paid two black friends $ 3,500 to help him stage the attack because he was unhappy with his salary as an actor on “Empire” and wanted to drum up publicity for his career.

In his June ruling, Toomin suggested that the county’s state’s attorney, Kim Foxx, mishandled the Smollett case by appointing a top aide to oversee it after she recused herself.

Foxx had been in contact with a Smollett relative and was approached by former first lady Michelle Obama’s one-time chief of staff on behalf of Smollett’s family. Foxx explained at the time she was recusing herself to avoid “even the perception of a conflict” of interest.

In his ruling, Toomin said he had no problem with Foxx’s February recusal but that it should have included a request for a special prosecutor. He said she had no right to hand it off to someone from her office, which he said amounted to naming her own special prosecutor.

Foxx has said Smollett was treated no differently than thousands of other defendants in low-level cases whose charges have been similarly dropped. Foxx also publicly wondered if her being black has anything to do with the criticism she has received.

Russia launches test of new rocket booster, sends humanoid robot into space

russia space robot

All eyes were on the International Space Station yesterday as NASA astronauts performed a spacewalk to install a new docking port that will allow commercial vehicles to latch onto the orbiting laboratory. Meanwhile, Russia was preparing for some serious work of its own, carrying out a crucial test of its new rocket booster which is expected to replace the stalwart Soyuz-FG rocket sometime in 2020.

That mission kicked off at 8:38 a.m. local time from Russia’s launchpad in Kazakhstan, successfully sending an uncrewed Soyuz capsule skyward on a path toward the International Space Station. The vehicle was empty of any human travelers, but it did have one inhabitant: a humanoid robot strapped into the commander’s seat.

‘Mindhunter’ Season 2: Netflix Journeys Into the Twisted Minds of Charles Manson, Son of Sam, and BTK Killer

via Netflix

Mindhunter is a serial-killer series like no other. It doesn’t depict actual homicides. It barely features any blood. And its focus is not on police-procedural sleuthing. Instead, David Fincher and creator/writer Joe Penhall’s adaptation of Mark Olshaker and John E. Douglas’ Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit sets aside those familiar genre building blocks for something far more entrancing: a portrait of pioneering criminal psychologists attempting to understand—and decipher—those who perpetrate multiple murders, all in order to capture kindred future fiends.

Dramatizing its protagonists’ efforts to envision the psyches of the world’s madmen, and asking its audience to do likewise via action involving killers and cops talking about wicked motivations and methods, it’s a work of—and about—imagination.

That’s most strikingly felt in the second episode of Mindhunter’s long-awaited sophomore season, which is now streaming on Netflix. Having been informed in 1979 about the ongoing quest to catch Kansas’ BTK killer (Sonny Valicenti), whose exploits were teased in recurring snapshots during Mindhunter’s first 2017 season, FBI behavioral science agent Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) meets with a man named Kevin Bright, who narrowly escaped BTK’s clutches after suffering three gunshot wounds to the head (his sister, Kathy, wasn’t so lucky). Unwilling to speak face-to-face, Kevin sits in the back seat of Tench’s vehicle; from the front seat, the agent questions him in detail about his ordeal. With their car located under a rumbling train overpass, the prolonged sequence is a master class in evocative tell-don’t-show suspense, as horror and sympathy escalate in tandem as we listen to this man’s nightmarish experience—all of which, the show demands, we recreate in our own mind.

Stephen Colbert Rips Into CNN, MSNBC Hosts for ‘Panning’ Mueller

Stephen Colbert has spent a lot of time going after Fox News over the years, but it’s far more rare that he takes aim at CNN or MSNBC.

But that’s what he did Thursday night after hosts on those networks focused more on the optics of former Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s hearing this week than on the substance of his testimony.

“At the hearings, Mueller confirmed that the president of the United States was not ‘totally exonerated,’” as Trump has repeatedly claimed, the host explained. “Mueller also agreed that Trump obstructed the investigation multiple times, Russia tampered with the election in Trump’s favor. And that the president welcomed that help, lied about welcoming it and encouraged others to lie about it.”

The Ordinary is launching into Boots and fans couldn’t be more excited

Can we get a hell yeah?

Words by Millie Willetts

Yes, the rumours are true – cult classic brand The Ordinary will be launching in selected Boots stores at the end of July. Hallelujah!

The store recently shared a picture of the brand on their Instagram, writing: ‘The secret’s out 👀 @deciem The Ordinary is coming to Boots very soon!’

Naturally, this left fans in a frenzy at the thought of physically getting their hands on the brand’s hottest products, dubbing Boots ‘the gift that keeps on giving’.

The brand become a phenomenon when it first launched in Canada in 2017, rapidly curating a massive following. It soon became available on two of the biggest online beauty retailers, Lookfantastic and Cult Beauty.

Known for its clinical technologies and developments of some of the best, effective products at very reasonable prices, a 30 ml bottle of The Ordinary Cold Pressed Virgin Marula Oil costs just £8, while their Salicylic Acid 2% is just £4.20.

Mic drop.

The Ordinary has managed to get even the most oblivious to skincare ingredients knowing what retinol is and, being a completely paraben, sulphate and 100% cruelty-free brand, their target following is well, everyone.

Could this move be The Ordinary’s ticket to become an even biggest player in the skincare game? We think so.

The Ordinary launches online and into select Boots stores in Derby, Milton Keynes, Plymouth, Bromely, Chelmsford, Dudley, Hull and Glasgow Fort on 31st of July

Meryl Streep Isn’t the Only One to Scream Herself Into Meme Status and This Guy Has a Gatorade Cup

Scream memes are apparently all the rage this summer. After Meryl Streep kicked this week’s meme cycle off with a gut-wrenching howl on Big Little Lies, Toronto Raptors assistant coach Jamaal Magloire made his own mark on the viral internet landscape by shouting into a paper cup during Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals.

In order to be heard over the din of the crowd in Oracle Arena on Thursday, Magloire cut out the bottom of a paper Gatorade cup so he could yell at his players through it. Of course, as soon as fans caught sight of his innovative coaching technique, it was instantly turned into a meme.

As a photo of Magloire holding up his cup-turned-megaphone spread across Twitter, people began adding hilarious captions imagining what the Toronto coach may have been screaming about. The topics ranged from NBA-related shade — “Seth [Curry] shot a higher percentage of threes than Steph [Curry] did this season!” — to passionate food opinions — “BONELESS CHICKEN WINGS AREN’T CHICKEN WINGS.”
