John Oliver Explains Why Trump Might Finally Be Impeached Over Ukraine Whistleblower Scandal

HBO

Late Sunday, John Oliver began the latest edition of his Emmy-winning HBO show Last Week Tonight by tackling the biggest news of the year: impeachment.

Yes, the House has launched an impeachment inquiry into President Trump over a whistleblower report—and accompanying transcript released by the White House—accusing Trump of pressuring the Ukrainian president to investigate Hunter Biden, the son of his political rival/Democratic frontrunner Joe Biden, eight times in a single phone conversation.

“Wow. Eight times! The only time it makes sense to ask for the same thing eight times in a single phone call is if you’re trying to connect with a customer-service agent for AT&T,” cracked Oliver. “Boom! I got you, Business Daddy, I got you! You genuinely bad company!” (AT&T is the owner of WarnerMedia, HBO’s parent company.)

No. 3 St. John Bosco believes it has ‘most explosive receiving core in the country’

BELLFLOWER, Calif. — Four games into the season, one of St. John Bosco’s biggest strengths is its receiving corps — despite losing two of its three leading receivers from 2018.

With four-star wide receiver Logan Loya transferring in from Orange Lutheran (California) and four-star junior Beaux Collins adding about two inches and 10 pounds this summer to reach 6-foot-2 1/2 and 195 pounds, they’ve been nice complements for four-star Kris Hutson, who had the second-most receiving yards on the team last year.

Jode McDuffie, ranked three-stars by 247Sports and Rivals, is also an important part of the group, which benefits by playing alongside one of the nation’s top quarterbacks, DJ Uiagalelei, who’s ranked No. 12 among the USA TODAY High School Sports Chosen 25.

“We just have the most explosive receiving corps in the country, no doubts about it,” Collins said. “We can score an 80-yard from the goal line, and we can just do everything.”

Friday wasn’t a great game for Bosco’s offense, relative to its typical performance. The Braves were slow to get going in a 31-8 win over Our Lady of Good Counsel (Olney, Maryland). But the No. 3 team in the Super 25 still won handily to increase its record to 4-0.

And there were still times when they moved the ball with apparent ease.

Bosco punted after the first drive and turned the ball over on downs on the second. Uiagalelei completed just one of his first five passes.

But when safety Jake Newman picked off a pass on Good Counsel’s second drive, Bosco got aggressive with ball at its own 25-yard line.

On the first play, Uiagalalei threw a pass down the sideline. Collins nabbed it and took it 62 yards. After a five-yard penalty, McDuffie scored an 18-yard touchdown.

Two plays. That’s it. When the offense clicks — and it normally does — Bosco feels invincible, and production comes from the entire group of receivers. With nine receptions Saturday, Hutson led the team for the third game in a row. His speed allows him to catch the ball deep or run short routes and then burst past defenders.

If defenses focus on Hutson, they miss the shifty Loya, who has offers from 13 schools including Nebraska and nine Pac-12 programs. Collins, recruited by Alabama, Clemson and 24 other programs, and is a deep threat — he scored touchdowns on all of his four receptions against Liberty (Henderson, Nevada) in the third game of the season, averaging 44.5 yards per catch.

And if there’s a more dangerous No. 4 wide receiver on any team’s depth chart than McDuffie, who has offers from a pair of Pac-12 programs, it’s not an offense you’d like to face.

“The cool thing is that we can all move around, too,” Loya said. “We can do all positions, all four of us.”

Uiagalelei, listed at 6-foot-4 1/2, 246 pounds, has the rare combination of accuracy and the ability to break tackles. He’s the size of many opposing defensive linemen. And though he’s listed as a pro-style quarterback, he’s an effective scrambler who can gain the extra yard on his feet or find a receiver downfield.

Loya is the new kid on the block, but the chemistry between he and Uiagalelei has grown quickly, evidenced by their nine connections in the season opener.

“Just kind of clicked,” Loya said. “Our preparation in the offseason was amazing for all four of us receivers, and we’re all just clicking.”

John Oliver Drags Joe Biden Over ‘Record Player’ Gaffe at Democratic Debate

HBO

On Sunday night, John Oliver dedicated part of the opening portion of his Emmy-winning show Last Week Tonight to the latest Democratic candidate debate, where frontrunner Joe Biden was asked the following question from ABC News moderator Linsey Davis:

“Mr. Vice President, I want to talk to you about inequality in schools and race. In a conversation about how to deal with segregation in schools back in 1975, you told a reporter, ‘I don’t feel responsible for the sins of my father and grandfather. I feel responsible for what the situation is today, for the sins of my own generation, and I’ll be damned if I feel responsible to pay for what happened 300 years ago.’ You said that some 40 years ago, but as you stand here tonight, what responsibility do you think that Americans need to take to repair the legacy of slavery in our country?

Biden, who’s had a number of foot-in-mouth moments on the campaign trail thus far, unleashed a confusing ramble of a response that included, in part: “We bring social workers into homes of parents to help them deal with how to raise their children. It’s not that they don’t want to help. They don’t know what—They don’t know what quite what to do. Play the radio. Make sure the television—excuse me, make sure you have the record player on at night…”

John Oliver Filibusters the Filibuster on Last Week Tonight

To mark the return of Last Week Tonight, John Oliver turned his attention to “Sharpiegate,” the looming Brexit deadline and, for his main story, legislation in Washington, D.C., best known by some as “Bill” from the Schoolhouse Rock cartoons. (“Fun fact: his last name is Cosby and you can see why he dropped it,” Oliver said.) As the Democratic primaries approach, 2020 presidential candidates have been proposing various bills they hope to pass once they are in office—from Medicare for All to new housing to freedom dividends. “The problem is that as appealing as some of those ideas sound, none are likely to happen…because they have to go through the Senate,“ Oliver said. “You know the Senate, the country’s second-most influential body after Dwayne ‘The Rock‘ Johnson’s.”

Currently, the Senate is “a giant non-functioning roadblock,” and that’s not according to Oliver, but according to a montage of farewell clips from Senators leaving their posts. Oliver noted that the last big piece of legislation the Senate passed was arguably “Obamacare a decade ago” and that’s largely due to “one incredibly annoying legislative tool.” Oliver made sure to note that he was not referring to Sen. Mitch McConnell—“although he is certainly at fault”—but to the filibuster, a delay tactic that ensures a bill is never voted on. According to Oliver, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington made the filibuster look like a good idea, the same way The Wizard of Oz made going on trip with “a furry, a vagrant and an axe-wielding robot seem like a good idea.” In practice, the filibuster means a simple majority is no longer enough to pass laws and “theoretically“ allows Senators from 21 states that represent “just 11% of Americans” to overrule laws for everyone else. “To quote anyone who has ever sat in a bathroom stall with a three inch gap in the door, why on earth was it designed this way?” Oliver asked, before launching into explanation of the tool.

Some claim it is to protect the opinion of the minority, while others claim it harks back to the Constitution and the glorious debates of past legislative bodies. “Feeling nostalgic for the golden age of the Senate is like feeling nostalgic for ’90s indie films and then actually watching Chasing Amy,“ said Oliver. A bill can be killed by filibuster if a Senator merely announces they have 41 votes and a desire to filibuster, which means that its use has skyrocketed. According to Oliver, “We have reached the point where Senators don’t so much brag about what they have passed as brag about what they will obstruct.“

Despite the risk of rolling back the filibuster rule, Oliver believes it is worth it. To prove that point, he proceeded to filibuster the filibuster with his own 15 hour speech—sort of.

John Stamos Says Lori Loughlin’s Legal Trouble ‘Doesn’t Make Sense’

Uncle Jesse is still in disbelief. John Stamos admitted he’s struggling to understand Lori Loughlin’s alleged role in the nationwide college admissions scandal.

“I gotta be careful,” the 56-year-old began in his GQ cover story, published online on Wednesday, August 28. “I want to wait until the trial happens, if it does, or whatever the result is, and then talk about it. … I’ll tell you one thing that has been strange is: Honestly I can’t figure it out. It doesn’t make sense.”

Stamos added that he “talked” to Loughlin, 55, “the morning everything hit,” but he still “can’t process it.”

He added: “Whatever happened … I’m pretty sure that the punishment is not equal to the crime, if there was a crime.”

Stamos and Loughlin starred as onscreen couple Uncle Jesse and Aunt Becky on Full House for six seasons after she joined the cast during season 2. They reprised their respective roles in the Netflix spinoff, Fuller House, on multiple guest spots before the scandal.

The Summerland alum and her husband, Mossimo Giannulli, were indicted in March after they were accused of paying bribes to ensure their daughters’ acceptance into the University of Southern California as part of the crew team even though they do not play the sport. Loughlin and Giannulli, 56, are parents of Bella, 20, and Olivia Jade, 19.

The couple, who are facing up to 20 years in prison, pleaded not guilty in April. More recently, Loughlin and Giannulli attended a hearing regarding the government’s concerns over their choice of lawyers in Boston on Tuesday, August 27. Despite warnings from the judge, the twosome opted to move forward with their shared legal team from the firm of Lathan & Watkins, who has previously represented USC in unrelated cases.

Amid the legal battle, Netflix opted not to bring back Loughlin for the fifth and final season of Fuller House. She was also fired from Hallmark Channel.

Stamos, for his part, played coy about Loughlin’s chances to return to the sitcom earlier this year.

“I haven’t been on the show yet and it hasn’t come up, so I’m going to talk to some people about it this week and see what’s going on,” the You star told Entertainment Tonight in June. “I’m just going to wait a little longer before I talk about it. It’s a difficult situation for everyone involved. I don’t mean just on our side.”

The rest of the cast, including Candace Cameron Bure, appear to be sticking by Loughlin as well.

“It’s too personal to us and we would never want to talk about someone that’s such a dear and close friend,” Bure said on the Today show in April. “I’ve already said that we are family and we stand by each other and pray for each other and we’ll always be there for each other.”

John Oliver, Larry David and Wanda Sykes Give Medical Bias the Last Week Tonight Treatment

John Oliver, Wanda Sykes, and Larry David teamed up to help fight reported bias in medical care on Sunday night’s Last Week Tonight.

According to Oliver, several studies have shown that bias among doctors leads to a “woman-shaped blind spot in medicine.” For example, researchers found that women are seven times more likely to be misdiagnosed when they are having a heart attack. He also cited a study that claimed that medical bias against people of color resulted in 83,000 needless deaths within the black community.

The U.S. has the highest rate of maternal mortality in the developed world and the rate is worse for black women, reportedly because doctors and nurses sometimes don’t believe them when it comes to pain or symptoms. “We are disbelieving black women to death,” Oliver argues.

Wanda Sykes came on the show to lay out a three-point plan for improving the situation. First, she recommended doctors under go bias training. Then she said diversity was needed at real hospitals, “not just the ones made up by Shonda Rimes.” Finally, she urged patients to advocate for themselves and if that doesn’t work, to “bring a white man to repeat everything that you’re saying.”

For those who don’t know where to get a white man, Sykes suggested the website WhatsLarrysProblem.com where Larry David has recorded messages for any medical situation—as well as those magical words for anyone seeking help: “I’d like to speak to your supervisor.”

Did Novelist John Steinbeck Spy for the CIA in Paris?

PARIS—In the summer of 1954, John Steinbeck was living the good life here in the City of Lights, but teetering on the brink of darkness and despair. The author of The Grapes of Wrath was hugely famous and comfortably rich (although still years away from the 1962 Nobel Prize for Literature), but he was wrestling with depression. “I just don’t have any place to run to, it seems sometimes,” he wrote to his agent in New York.

Writers often like to complicate their lives with distractions and adventures when they’re depressed, especially when they think they’re not writing anything very important, which was the case with Steinbeck in the summer of ’54. So, to keep himself amused, Steinbeck had signed up for a series of little columns and short stories to be published in French (which he did not speak) in the Paris daily Le Figaro

And one of those has just been published in English for the first time by The Strand Magazine, which previously unearthed lost or forgotten fiction by Ernest Hemingway, H.G. Wells, and others.

John Oliver Twists Knife in Deeper on Boris Johnson: It’s Britain ‘Shooting Themselves in the Dick’

NBC

On Sunday night, John Oliver delivered a blistering takedown of newly minted U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson on his Emmy-winning HBO show Last Week Tonight, branding him a “truly disgusting” man with a penchant for racism and homophobia

The following evening, Oliver found himself on the couch opposite Seth Meyers for a Late Night interview. And this time around, the comic aimed his ire at… well, Johnson again, albeit with a smattering of Donald Trump.

When Meyers remarked on the difference between Johnson and Trump, saying “Boris is only pretending to be dumb,” Oliver replied, “There are superficial similarities between Trump and Johnson, obviously, but yet, it is very tactical. You never think that Trump is playing chess mentally, or that he knows how to play chess.”

Trump to Nominate John Ratcliffe to Replace Dan Coats as National Intelligence Director

President Donald Trump said he plans to nominate Representative John Ratcliffe as Director of National Intelligence, replacing Dan Coats, who he said would depart the office on Aug. 15.

The president announced the personnel changes on Twitter and said he’d name an acting director shortly. Ratcliffe’s nomination will be subject to approval by the Senate.

Donald J. Trump@realDonaldTrumpI am pleased to announce that highly respected Congressman John Ratcliffe of Texas will be nominated by me to be the Director of National Intelligence. A former U.S. Attorney, John will lead and inspire greatness for the Country he loves. Dan Coats, the current Director, will….

Sent via Twitter for iPhone.

View original tweet.

Coats repeatedly disagreed with Trump on key national security claims for over two years, and the imminent departure of the former Republican senator from Indiana has been talked about for several months.

By contrast, Ratcliffe’s star is rising. The 53-year-old played a prominent role in last week’s House hearing featuring Robert Mueller, when the third-term lawmaker tore into the former Special Counsel as having violated “every principle and the most sacred traditions” of prosecutors by including in his report “potential crimes that were not charged.”

As the head of the U.S. intelligence community, the 76-year-old Coats has been a rare cabinet official willing to break ranks with the president publicly. A recent example was in January, at a congressional hearing where Coats and other intelligence chiefs contradicted the president’s statements on topics from North Korea to Islamic State.

It was a habit that drew praise from the Democratic chairman of the House Intelligence Committee. Amid reports in February that Coats was at risk of losing his job, Representative Adam Schiff of California said in a tweet that Coats “speaks truth to power and gives policy makers the best intelligence possible.”

Undercut on Iran

During the January hearing, Coats countered Trump’s assertion that Islamic State was defeated, testifying that “ISIS is intent on resurging and still commands thousands of fighters in Iraq and Syria.”

Defying the optimism exuded by Trump on North Korea, Coats said the government of Kim Jong Un is “unlikely to completely give up its nuclear weapons and production capabilities.” His assessment came weeks after a second summit between Trump and the North Korean leader, in Vietnam in February, broke up without agreements on denuclearization.

Coats also undercut the president on Iran, testifying that intelligence agencies believed Iran was continuing to comply with the the 2015 nuclear agreement from which Trump withdrew in 2018. Since then, following U.S. moves to ramp up sanctions on the Islamic Republic, Iran began enriching uranium beyond agreed-upon limits.

‘Down the Middle’

Trump lashed out at the Iran assessment at the time, writing on Twitter that intelligence officials “seem to be extremely passive and naive when it comes to the dangers of Iran. They are wrong!” Trump added: “Perhaps Intelligence should go back to school!”

Coats’s deputy, Sue Gordon, praised his performance as a non-political intelligence chief in a July podcast with former Deputy CIA Director Michael Morrell.

“He has played intelligence straight down the middle,” Gordon said on the “Intelligence Matters” podcast. “The intelligence community is strong in part because of the way Dan has conducted his job. I don’t know that any DNI could have done in this time what Dan Coats has done and I’m proud to be a member of his team.”

In selecting Ratcliffe, Trump would be going in the opposite direction, choosing an intelligence chief who has shown a strong partisan leaning.

Reverse Engineering

Interviewed Sunday on the Fox News Channel, Ratcliffe suggested he thought the special counsel’s probe of Trump sprang from a plot to frame the former New York real estate developer that originated by the administration of former President Barack Obama.

“They accused Donald Trump of a crime, and then they try and reverse-engineer a process to justify that accusation,” Ratcliffe said on “Sunday Morning Futures.” “It does appear that there were crimes committed during the Obama administration.”

Ratcliffe also said that Democratic Representatives Jerrold Nadler and Schiff, respective chairmen of the two House committees that held the Mueller hearing “are starting to look more like Laurel and Hardy.”

In July 2018, Coats criticized Trump’s decision to meet alone with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, saying at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado soon after that, “I would have suggested a different way, but that’s not my role, that’s not my job. So it is what it is.”

Told while on stage at the Aspen forum that the White House had tweeted Putin was being invited to Washington — a trip that never occurred — Coats said sardonically, “That’s going to be special.”

Low-Profile Chief

Coats was a low-profile chief of the intelligence community, often leaving the spotlight to the leaders of the better-known Central Intelligence Agency: Michael Pompeo at the start of Trump’s administration and, after he became secretary of State, Gina Haspel, the CIA’s current director.

Yet when Coats made public comments, they nearly always defended the independence of the intelligence community.

In May, Coats addressed concerns that Trump’s order telling the intelligence community to share classified documents about the start of the Russia probe with the Justice Department could result in national security secrets becoming public. He said he was confident that “long-established procedures” to safeguard the information would be followed, and he vowed to keep providing “apolitical intelligence” to the president.

Coats’s pending departure comes amid renewed turmoil on Trump’s national security team and broader cabinet. The administration has no confirmed deputy defense secretary, United Nations ambassador or homeland security secretary. Labor Secretary Alex Acosta resigned on July 12 after coming under fire for his handling of a decade-old sex crimes case against investor Jeffrey Epstein, who faces new charges for trafficking girls as young as 14 for sex.

Can’t Be Abolished

Axios reported this month that Trump isn’t convinced the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, created after the Sept. 11 terror attacks, is even necessary. But the office was created by Congress and can’t be abolished by the president.

Coats was a well known quantity in Washington long before taking on the role coordinating the work of the federal government’s more than a dozen intelligence agencies. He served as an Indiana congressman and then senator from 1981 to 1999, stepping down because of a term-limits pledge.

He returned to the Senate in 2011 and became a member of the Finance, Intelligence and Joint Economic committees. He also served as U.S. ambassador to Germany and worked as a lobbyist for companies such as General Electric Co. and Alphabet Inc’s Google.

High-Profile Split

His most high-profile divergence from Trump came after the president’s 2018 summit with Putin in Helsinki, where Trump seemed to give more credence to Putin’s denial that Russia meddled in the 2016 U.S. election than the findings of “my people,” including Coats.

Before the returning president’s plane even landed in Washington, Coats fired off his response.

“We have been clear in our assessments of Russian meddling in the 2016 election and their ongoing, pervasive efforts to undermine our democracy, and we will continue to provide unvarnished and objective intelligence in support of our national security.”

Trump plans to nominate Representative John Ratcliffe, a Texas Republican, to replace Coats, one person said. The people declined to be identified to discuss personnel moves that are not yet public.

Ratcliffe, 53, played a prominent role in last week’s House hearing featuring former Special Counsel Robert Mueller. The third-term lawmaker tore into Mueller as having violated “every principle and the most sacred traditions” of prosecutors by including in his report “potential crimes that were not charged.”

The Weird and Wonderful Dr. John Embodied New Orleans Music

Jonathan Bachman/Reuters

The career of New Orleans musician Dr. John, who passed on June 6 at the age of 78, lasted almost 65 years. Born Malcolm “Mac” Rebennack in New Orleans in 1941, Dr. John learned music from various family members, including his father, a record salesman for jukeboxes who exposed him to the latest sounds. At age 13, he met Professor Longhair, the seminal pianist/composer who helped invent New Orleans r&b and funk; his path was set.

Mac’s recording history is large and bewildering, with stellar discs scattered through a good part of his six-Grammy career. Here is a guide to his best work.

He began recording in the late ’50s, with the best of these sides collected on Storm Warning (What Records). In the early ’60s, drug trouble sent him to jail, then exile in Los Angeles, where he found work with New Orleans ex-pats, including Sonny and Cher’s musical director, Harold Battiste. They concocted a stage act based on a 19th-century voodoo priest named Dr. John Creaux. Mac wanted his friend the pianist/singer Ronnie Barron to lead the band. When he declined, Mac stepped in.

MOVIE APP UPDATE:

Ex–NFL Player John Urschel Gave up the Game for a Ph.D.—and a Life—in Math

One recent afternoon in Cambridge, Mass., John Urschel and I strolled along the Charles River on the way to his office at MIT, where he’s pursuing a Ph.D. in mathematics. We were passing some of the MIT athletic facilities when I asked Urschel a seemingly mundane question. Where’s the football field? Urschel’s response was quick: “You’re looking at it.”

Now, I’m no MIT math major. But I’m bright enough to know I was staring straight at a baseball diamond. Such a slip would have been innocent enough, if Urschel hadn’t spent three seasons as an offensive lineman for the Baltimore Ravens.

In the summer of 2017, Urschel announced he was retiring from the NFL, at age 26, to pursue his mathematics doctorate full time. His decision came two days after the Journal of the American Medical Association published a study showing that chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative disease, had been found in the brains of 110 of 111 ex–NFL players examined by Boston University researchers. Yes, the findings factored into Urschel’s decision. But he insists they didn’t tip the scales. He had been thinking hard about stepping away, as he was already taking classes at MIT. Still, the media painted Urschel’s choice as more evidence that smart young pros, fearing brain trauma, were fleeing the game. Urschel’s story proved irresistible: the MIT mathematician had calculated that the NFL just wasn’t worth it.

After I inform Urschel that no, he wasn’t looking at a football field, he smiles. “I just don’t pay attention,” he says. But Urschel doesn’t object when I cite his slip as a signal that he’s left football far behind. Nearly two years after retiring, he says that while he misses the paycheck—who wouldn’t?—he hasn’t felt a single pang of regret on football Sundays, when he’s wrestling with theorems instead of 300-lb. linemen. “It’s a pretty cool life,” he says. “I wake up in the morning, I walk to my office. I think all day.”

Urschel dedicates much of his new memoir, Mind and Matter: A Life in Math and Football—written with his partner, the journalist Louisa Thomas—to espousing the importance of problem-solving. “It’s a strange thing,” says Urschel in the living room of the Cambridge apartment he shares with Thomas and their year-old daughter, Joanna. “Some people will sort of joke about, ‘Oh, I was never good at math.’ But people don’t joke about being illiterate. Being mathematically illiterate is quite a dangerous thing.”

Growing up in Buffalo, n.y., Urschel began his love affair with numbers early. When his attorney mother took him shopping, she’d let him keep the change if he calculated the 8% sales tax before the cashier rang it up. The summer before eighth grade, he audited a calculus class at the University at Buffalo, where his dad, a surgeon, was pursuing a master’s in economics. Soon, the junior high kid was helping college students finish problem sets.

He also fell for football. Urschel writes that when he was in high school, he and his father, who played collegiately in Canada, banged helmets in the backyard. In today’s concussion-conscious world, doctors frown upon this kind of head-to-head contact. Even so, Urschel says, “These are actually some of my fondest moments with my dad.”

Urschel earned a football scholarship to Penn State, where he majored in math. By the time the Ravens selected him in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL draft, he had his master’s degree and had published a paper in a top linear-algebra journal. (Urschel specializes in graph theory, the branch of advanced math that studies the connectivity of networks.) After a rookie season in which he started three games, plus two in the playoffs, he felt ashamed that he was putting off his Ph.D. work until he finished pro football. “I felt like I was selling myself short,” he says. So he applied to MIT’s Ph.D. program and was accepted. The American Mathematical Society named a theorem after Urschel and his co-author. “Let G be a finite connected undirected weighted graph without self-loops …,” the Urschel-Zikatanov theorem begins.

Before the 2015 season, Urschel had suffered a concussion that left him unable to process high-level math for a few months, but he returned to the field. By the summer of 2017, he was weighing his options more closely. He was settling into Ph.D. life, and Thomas was pregnant. Pounding heads seemed unappealing. Then that CTE study was released. Two days later, he informed Baltimore coach John Harbaugh that he was retiring, thinking no one would notice. But his phone rang off the hook. He didn’t go outside for days. “It was one of the most unpleasant moments of my life,” he says.

A couple of years removed, Urschel insists he doesn’t worry that any potential symptoms of CTE—forgetfulness, mood swings, depression—will hinder his career. Sure, as an offensive lineman he absorbed hits to his head. But he points out that just because more than 99% of the brains examined in the study had CTE doesn’t mean more than 99% of all ex-players do. Such studies have a self-selection bias: many players offer up their brains because they think they may be damaged. So how many players does he suspect have CTE? “It’s not epsilon close to zero,” he says. “And it’s not some large constant fraction of 100. You know what I’m saying? It’s bounded away from both.”

Books with titles like Partial Differential Equations in Action and Hierarchical Matrices populate Urschel’s MIT office, along with the usual grad-student fare that fuels late-night research: cans of black beans, sardines and StarKist tuna. Urschel geeks out about the math department’s espresso machine and the equations that fill hallway chalkboards. Math can be as cutthroat as football: Urschel won’t share the subject of his dissertation, lest competition come after it. “But anything on the chalkboard,” he says in the hall, “is fair game.”

Sports teams, which have been staffing up their analytics operations, have come calling with offers. But academic life holds much more appeal. When I ask him to explain the math of the two-point conversion, he does with reluctance. “This is as low-level as you get,” he says. He draws a series of probability tree diagrams in chalk: let’s just say if your team’s down 14 with five minutes to go and scores a touchdown, the coach needs to go for two.

Urschel would rather spend his time promoting math. He visits classrooms around the country. In early May he spoke at the National Math Festival in D.C. He recommends books about calculus via his Twitter feed. “I could obsess over a problem for days, for weeks, thinking of nothing else, the way someone might obsess over a girl,” he writes in his own book. “But no girl I had ever met brought me the singular sense of engagement that I got from proving something difficult.”

He also wants athletes, at all levels, to know they don’t need to compromise their intellect. “The United States, more than any other culture, has the strange marriage of athletics and academics,” Urschel says. “I thought it was important to show that this is something that really can co-exist.” He’s 350 miles from Baltimore but might as well be 35,000. Urschel turns off the office lights, and heads home to eat dinner and finish up some work. More equations await.

John Singleton Will Have Private Funeral On Monday

John Singleton funeral and interment details have been released. We now know the date and location of his services and where he’ll be buried.

Singleton’s service will be observed this Monday at 10 a.m. at the Angelus Funeral Home on Crenshaw Blvd. in the Crenshaw District of South Los Angeles. If the Angelus Funeral Home name sounds familiar, that’s because you might recognize it as the same place that handled Nipsey Hussle’s funeral arrangements.

After services for Singleton, he will be interred at Forest Lawn-Hollywood Hills. Yes, it’s the same place where Nipsey, along with numerous other celebrities, is buried.

Speaking of his interment, a family member told TMZ that Monday’s funeral will be closed off to the public. However, a larger event will be held on May 21, but at present the details haven’t been worked out.

In other news about Singleton’s death, TMZ is reporting that the late director’s will was filed in Los Angeles Friday. His oldest daughter, 26-year-old Justice, will get his estate which is valued at $ 3.8 million. The will was drafted in 1993, before his 6 other children were born. They could have a claim to split the assets 7 ways.

The report goes on to say that Singleton, who died of a stroke last month at 51, could also have a trust outside the will. His estate was reportedly valued at around $ 35 million, so the will may not be a full accounting of the assets he left behind.

John Singleton’s Daughter, Mother, Father And Girlfriend Set To Battle Over His Estate

Following the death of John Singleton on Monday at age 51 comes word that his family is set to battle for control of his estate.

Sources connected with the Singleton family tell TMZ that John’s mother, Shelia Ward, is not only up against John’s daughter, Cleopatra, but also his estranged father and girlfriend, the mother of his 1-year-old son.

Last week, Cleopatra filed a motion seeking to block her grandmother’s proposed conservatorship. She claims Ward wants to liquidate all of John’s assets and freeze out his 7 children, the report states.

Singleton’s estate is allegedly worth $ 35 million and Cleopatra fears Sheila will make it impossible for her and others in the family to access what they believe they are rightfully entitled to financially.

John’s mother is his longtime business manager, thus the reason why she filed for the conservatorship after he reportedly fell into a coma last week. But Ward denies plotting to cut her son’s children from his estate.

Cleopatra, meanwhile, doesn’t trust her grandmother and she’s suggesting John’s son, Maasai or his father, Danny be appointed conservators instead of Sheila.

The acclaimed director, who was the first Black male to receive an Oscar nomination, suffered a stroke after experiencing weakness in his legs, and was admitted to the hospital on April 17. He was taken off life support Monday and died a few hours later.

His family issued a statement, saying: “We are sad to relay that John Singleton has died. John passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family and friends. We want to thank the amazing doctors at Cedars-Sinai Hospital for their expert care and kindness and we again want thank all of John’s fans, friends and colleagues for all of the love and support they showed him during this difficult time.” — The Singleton Family.

ENTERTAINMENT UPDATE:

Remembering the Legacy of Legendary Director John Singleton and his Classic Film “Boyz n the Hood”

Update: 4:45 p.m. EST

According to CNN, John Singleton died on April 29 at 51 years old. His family released the following statement:

“We are sad to relay that John Singleton has died. John passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family and friends. We want to thank the amazing doctors at Cedars-Sinai Hospital for their expert care and kindness and we again want thank all of John’s fans, friends and colleagues for all of the love and support they showed him during this difficult time.”

Hollywood trailblazer John Singleton, who suffered from a stroke and fell into a coma earlier this month, made history when he was just 24 years old with his iconic 1991 film Boyz n the Hood. The groundbreaking movie explored the plight of childhood friends growing up in an inner-city neighborhood stricken by gang violence in South Los Angeles. The film received two Academy Award nominations in 1992, making Singleton both the first African American and youngest person ever to be nominated for Best Director. It also received the nod for Best Original Screenplay. In addition, the film also helped launch the careers of stars like Angela Bassett, Morris Chestnut, and Cuba Gooding, Jr.

At the 2015 American Black Film Festival, Singleton revealed that he had hired a predominantly black crew to make the film as well as a mix of actors and non-actors, some from South LA. “Everyone from the neighborhood was invested in the film. The crew was 97% black,” said the USC School of Cinematic Arts graduate. He described making the film — which was inspired by his real-life friends and the challenges that they experienced in South Central — as “cathartic.” “I wanted to make a film that was quintessentially black American. I think we’ve gotten away from that as filmmakers. We’re too concerned with what others think, not about what’s culturally astute.”

Today, Boyz n the Hood is recognized as one of the most definitive movies of the 90s and an urban classic that continues to resonate with audiences almost 30 years later. “Everything that we dealt with in Boyz n the Hood is still relevant today,” Singleton said. “Black men still feel like they have to prove their masculinity. There’s so much pressure black women and men have to deal with. We’ve become time bombs.” Boyz n the Hood was added to the United States Library of Congress in 2002.

The screenwriter went on to direct a number of other notable films and television series throughout his career, including Poetic JusticeBaby Boy, 2 Fast 2 Furious, the FX crime drama Snowfall, and several episodes of Empire.

Back in 2011, Singleton told BLACK ENTERPRISE that there are fewer opportunities for black directors today to make big-picture films than there were at the start of his career. “I think there is less opportunity now in making big mainstream pictures [for] black filmmakers making films for black audiences,” he said. “It’s harder for us to get a movie made in that vein because they kind of compartmentalized and made it open for just a few people to make pictures.”

Tragically, Singleton suffered from a stroke on April 17 and was placed in intensive care. His mother and business manager, Shelia Ward, filed papers in court requesting conservatorship, stating that Singleton was “unable to provide for his personal needs” or “manage his financial resources,” according to The Associated Press. The court papers also claim that at the time of his stroke, Singleton was “engaged in several business deals” and in the process of signing “a lucrative settlement agreement.” Ward’s claims, however, were publicly refuted by Singleton’s daughter, Cleopatra Singleton, who also opposed the idea of giving her grandmother control over her father’s estate.

At the time of publishing, Singleton was reportedly still on life support and scheduled to be taken off April 29. In a statement, a family spokesperson revealed he had suffered from hypertension. “Like many African Americans, Singleton quietly struggled with hypertension. More than 40% of African American men and women have high blood pressure, which also develops earlier in life and is usually more severe.”

EMPLOYMENT SEARCH UPDATE:

John Singleton’s Boyz n the Hood Was Just the Start of a Fearless, Trailblazing Career

The Oscars So White debacle of 2015 opened a galvanizing conversation about how filmmakers of color might carve out greater opportunity in Hollywood. But John Singleton, who died Monday at age 51 following a stroke, was at the forefront of that battle long before we had a hashtag for it, ushering in a new era of creativity and boldness among black filmmakers. He showed through his work just how boundless the possibilities were.

Singleton’s 1991 debut Boyz n the Hood—starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and Ice Cube as young men coming of age in South Central Los Angeles, where Singleton himself grew up—dealt frankly with inner-city violence, facing the prevalence of guns and drugs head-on. But to say the movie is “about” violence is to grossly oversimplify it. Singleton, barely into his 20s when he wrote and directed the film, told a story about the tragedy of black men killing one another—but even that was only a small story within a bigger story. Boyz n the Hood is also about parents who strive to raise their kids with sturdy values, about neighborhoods where lawns are kept impeccably tidy as a point of pride. About young people who want to do what’s right, even when circumstances threaten to pull them in another direction. Although Boyz n the Hood is set in a specific time and place, it’s a story that’s universal—and so beautifully and astutely made that it still feels fresh nearly 30 years later.

Pool ARNAL/GARCIA/PICOT/Gamma-Rapho via Getty ImagesActor and rapper Ice Cube with John Singleton, director of ‘Boyz N the Hood’ at Cannes in May 1991 in France.

Boyz n the Hood screened in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes in 1991, where it received a 20-minute standing ovation. It was nominated for two Academy Awards, one for screenplay and one for direction. Singleton was the youngest person to be nominated for Best Director, and also the first African-American. As an emerging black filmmaker dealing with societal issues in the early 1990s, Singleton was hardly alone: Mario Van Peebles, Matty Rich, and Albert and Allen Hughes—among others—hit the scene at the same time, and Spike Lee had already broken through with his 1986 She’s Gotta Have It. But Singleton, unlike some of those other filmmakers (Lee one of the obvious exceptions), forged a long-lasting and varied career for himself as a director, writer and producer, both in film and, more recently, in television. He was one of the creators of Snowfall, set in the early days of the crack cocaine epidemic in Los Angeles in the 1980s.

He forged a career out of taking chances. In 2000 he mounted a remake of the blaxploitation favorite Shaft, starring Samuel L. Jackson, reworking the material into a brutal but effective vigilante story in which a spoiled white rich kid (Christian Bale) struts around thinking he can get away with murdering a black man, until the hero puts him straight. Singleton’s Shaft was a rough breath of fresh air in Rudy Giuliani’s New York—not a picture that pitted black against white, but a revenge fantasy that, in its blunt vision, showed how violence serves no one, and looking for one place (or one race) on which to lay blame is no solution at all.

John Singleton
Nick Ut—APDirector John Singleton touches his new star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles, Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003.

Singleton was just as fearless as a producer of other filmmakers’ work, like Craig Brewer’s atmospheric 2005 love letter to Memphis, Hustle & Flow, starring Terrence Howard as a complex and not always likable small-time drug dealer and pimp. In 2007 Singleton went on to produce Brewer’s even more daring Black Snake Moan, in which Jackson plays a disillusioned, God-fearing juke-joint bluesman who sets out to redeem a sort of fallen angel, played by Christina Ricci. At one point, Jackson’s character chains Ricci’s to a radiator, as part of an effort to rid her of the demons that he believes plague her. That’s a pulpy, sensationalistic image, but once we’re lured in, we see the movie’s soul: This is really a fable about damaged people helping one another to become their best selves.

Singleton saw that kind of complexity everywhere. That’s because it was more important for him to see people than to just tackle issues. In an extraordinary scene from Boyz n the Hood, Laurence Fishburne’s Furious Styles, the father of Gooding’s character, Tre, drives Tre and his friend out to Compton and points out a billboard advertising “cash for your home.” Other young people from the neighborhood, and one old man, gather round as Furious—a veteran who’s now a businessman—uses the billboard to craft a lesson about gentrification and the importance of keeping black neighborhoods alive with black-owned businesses. He also explains how the white power structure distorts the reality of black communities to its benefit.

It’s one of those scenes that’s potentially deadly: Done wrong, it could be didactic and preachy. But Singleton’s conviction, channeled through Fishburne, is a rippling electric charge, and yet another indication of his fearlessness as a filmmaker. Singleton spoke volumes through his movies, and through the projects of others that he helped bring to life. But he also spoke like a man who knew how to listen—one who knew that listening, not just talking, is the way to keep the conversation going, and the only path to fixing a world that can sometimes feel irreparably broken.

Oscar-nominated director John Singleton, who is best known for such films as Boyz n the Hood and Poetic Justice, has died at the age of 51, his family said in a statement to The Associated Press.

The director had been in a medically-induced coma at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center since suffering a catastrophic stroke on April 17.

Singleton was the first black filmmaker ever nominated for an Oscar in the best director category—at the age of just 23. He was considered an influential member of a community of black filmmakers who turned the movie industry upside-down in the ’90s along with Spike Lee, Matty Rich, Julie Dash, and F. Gary Gray.

Legendary Director John Singleton Dead At 51

NEW YORK (AP) — Director John Singleton, who made one of Hollywood’s most memorable debuts with the Oscar-nominated “Boyz N the Hood” and continued over the following decades to probe the lives of black communities in his native Los Angeles and beyond, has died. He was 51.

Singleton’s family said Monday that he died after being taken off life support, about two weeks after the director suffered a major stroke.

Singleton was in his early 20s, just out of the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts, when he wrote, directed and produced “Boyz N the Hood.” Based on Singleton’s upbringing and shot in his old neighborhood, the low-budget production starred Cuba Gooding Jr. and Ice Cube and centered on three friends in South Central Los Angeles, where college aspirations competed with the pressures of gang life. “Boyz N the Hood” was a critical and commercial hit, given a 20-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival and praised as a groundbreaking extension of rap to the big screen, a realistic and compassionate take on race, class, peer pressure and family. Singleton would later call it a “rap album on film.”

For many, the 1991 release captured the explosive mood in Los Angeles in the months following the videotaped police beating of Rodney King. “Boyz N the Hood” also came out at a time when, thanks to the efforts to Spike Lee and others, black films were starting to get made by Hollywood after a long absence. Singleton became the first black director to receive an Academy Award nomination, an honor he would say was compensation for the academy’s snubbing Lee and “Do the Right Thing” two years earlier, and was nominated for best screenplay. (“The Silence of the Lambs” won in both categories). At 24, he was also the youngest director nominee in Oscar history.

[ione_media_gallery id=”759683″ overlay=”true”]

“I think I was living this film before I ever thought about making it,” Singleton told Vice in 2016. “As I started to think about what I wanted to do with my life, and cinema became an option, it was just natural that this was probably gonna be my first film. In fact, when I applied to USC Film School they had a thing that asked you to write three ideas for films. And one of them was called Summer of ’84, which was about growing up in South Central LA.”

In 2002, “Boyz N the Hood’ was added to the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, which called it “an innovative look at life and the tough choices present for kids growing up in South Central Los Angeles.”

None of Singleton’s subsequent movies received the acclaim of “Boyz N the Hood” and he was criticized at times for turning characters into mouthpieces for political and social messages. But he attracted talent ranging from Tupac Shakur to Don Cheadle and explored themes of creative expression (“Poetic Justice”), identity (“Higher Learning”) and the country’s racist past, notably in “Rosewood,” based on a murderous white rampage against a black community in Florida in 1923. He also made the coming-of-age story “Baby Boy,” a remake of the action film “Shaft” and an installment in the “Fast and Furious” franchise, “2 Fast 2 Furious.” More recent projects included the FX crime drama “Snowfall,” which he helped create. Starring Damson Idris, “Snowfall” returned Singleton to the Los Angeles of his youth and the destructive effects of the rise of crack cocaine.

“Drugs devastated a generation. It gave me something to write about, but I had to survive it first,” Singleton told the Guardian in 2017. “It made me a very angry young man. I didn’t understand why I was so angry, but I wasn’t someone who took my anger and applied it inward. I turned it into being a storyteller. I was on a kamikaze mission to really tell stories from my perspective — an authentic black perspective.”

Singleton was married twice, and had five children. Besides his career in movies, Singleton also directed the video for Michael Jackson’s “Remember the Time,” which included Eddie Murphy and Magic Johnson. He cast hip-hop artists and other musicians in many of his films, including Ice Cube in “Boyz N the Hood,” Janet Jackson and Shakur in “Poetic Justice” and Tyrese Gibson in “Baby Boy.”

Singleton’s early success didn’t shield him from creative conflicts or frustration with Hollywood studios. He blamed the commercial failure of “Rosewood” on lack of support from Warner Bros. He fought with producer Scott Rudin during the making of “Shaft” and was furious when Rudin brought in Richard Price to revise the script. He had planned to direct a biopic about Shakur, but quit after clashing with Morgan Creek Productions. In 2014, he chastised the industry for “refusing to let African-Americans direct black-themed films,” but Singleton was pleased in recent years by the emergence of Ava DuVernay, Barry Jenkins, Jordan Peele and others.

“There are these stacks of (films by non-black filmmakers) where black people have had to say, ‘OK, at least they tried,’” he told The Hollywood Reporter in 2018, adding that now blacks were making the films themselves. “What’s interesting when you see ‘Black Panther’ is you realize it couldn’t have been directed by anybody else but Ryan Coogler. It’s a great adventure movie and it works on all those different levels as entertainment, but it has this kind of cultural through-line that is so specific that it makes it universal.”

John Singleton’s Daughter: “My Father Is Not in a Coma”

The family of filmmaker John Singleton is reportedly fighting for control of his business affairs and estate following the 51-year-old movie director’s stroke last week. Singleton’s mother is seeking to be appointed as his temporary conservator and claims that he has fallen into a coma. Singleton’s daughter, however, is disputing that claim as well as her grandmother’s pursuit of conservatorship, which would grant her legal authority to make medical and financial decisions on Singleton’s behalf while he is incapacitated.

Singleton made history at 24 years old when he became both the first African American and youngest person ever to be nominated for Best Director at the 1992 Academy Awards for his debut film Boyz n the Hood (1991). The groundbreaking film also received an Oscars nod for Best Original Screenplay. The screenwriter went on to direct a number of notable films and television series throughout his career, including classics like Poetic Justice and Baby Boy, 2 Fast 2 Furious, and the recent FX crime drama Snowfall.

Earlier this month, it was reported that the South Los Angeles native suffered from a severe stroke on April 17 and was placed in intensive care. At the time, his family released a statement saying that he was under “great medical care.” His mother, Shelia Ward, filed papers in court on Thursday stating Singleton is “currently hospitalized in a coma and is unable to provide for his personal needs” or “manage his financial resources,” according to The Associated Press. The court papers also claim that at the time of his stroke, Singleton was “engaged in several business deals” and in the process of signing “a lucrative settlement agreement.” The papers added that he would take a huge financial loss if a conservator cannot sign the papers on his behalf.

Singleton’s daughter, Cleopatra Singleton, however, is publicly denying her grandmother’s claims, according to a report published in The New York Times Friday. “My father is not in a coma,” she told The NYT. “My father had a stroke on April 17, 2019, and at this point, we are optimistic about a full recovery.” She added that her siblings also oppose the idea of giving their grandmother control over their father’s estate, which is valued at $ 1.4 million. “Myself, several of my siblings, and my father’s father will oppose my grandmother’s application to be appointed my father’s legal conservator,” she said. She added that there will be a hearing “on whether or not my grandmother should become the temporary conservator over my father’s personal and business estate.”

This is not the first time Singleton’s family has been in conflict. Back in 2016, one of his sons wrote an open letter accusing Singleton’s mother of being “an overbearing, manipulative mother who is jealous of anyone else’s happiness.”

John Legend Teams With Beauty Brand Kiehl’s For ‘Made Better’ Campaign [Watch]

John Legend has joined forces with Kiehl’s for its “Made Better” campaign to help spread a vital message about taking care of the environment.

“Kiehl’s has been making wonderful products for years. Now, they’re committed to using more sustainable packaging, natural ingredients and to support environmental causes, which I am glad to see,” Legend tells PEOPLE.

To help bring awareness to the issue, Legend is promoting the brand’s top selling face mask.

“I’m really inspired by the story behind the main ingredient of the mask — Amazonian White Clay — which is fairly traded and collected by local families near the Amazon River in Northern Brazil,” he says. “Kiehl’s provides economic support to the community.”

The EGOT-winning musician says his two kids, 2-year-old daughter Luna and 10-month-old son Miles, inspired him to team up with Kiehl’s.

“This partnership is all about making choices today that leave the world a better place for my kids and future generations,” Legend says.

via PEOPLE:

Besides formulating the deep cleansing face mask with fairly traded ingredients, the brand also uses repurposed coffee bean bag fiber and post-consumer waste for the top label and 30 percent post-consumer recycled plastic for the jar. Plus, in honor of Earth Day 2019, Kiehl’s will donate 100 percent of net profits, up to $ 25,000, of the limited edition mask to theEarth Day Network, which will support the organization’s campaign, The Great Global Clean Up.

“Sustainability is making choices, big or small, every day that leave the planet healthier than we found it,” Legend says. “And it isn’t hard to be eco-conscious. We can make a big difference with the products we buy.”

He added, “Luna knows the word recycling already!” he says. “There’s a recycling bin right next to our trash can and she knows certain things go in the recycling bin, so people can use them again.”

Scroll up and watch Legend promote the campaign via the clip above.

John Lennon dropped big bucks at House of Oldies record store

Any store would be thrilled to have a member of The Beatles browse their shelves. But when John Lennon would walk in to the West Village record store House of Oldies during the early 1970s, owner Bob Abramson had an extra reason to be glad. “He used to buy 45s by people like Carl Perkins…

John Oliver and Janet From The Good Place Warn About Mobile Homes on Last Week Tonight

“Mobile homes were perfected by humans, but invented by snails,” explained John Oliver on Last Week Tonight. And because 20 million Americans live in mobile homes he focused Sunday night’s episode on them.

Mobile homes cost significantly less than conventional homes, making them one of the last few affordable housing options around. “It can be hard to tell the difference between mobile homes and manufactured homes,” Oliver said. “Just like it’s hard to tell the difference between Jessica Chastain and Bryce Dallas Howard. The difference is, like a mobile home, Bryce Dallas Howard is assembled off-site, then placed on wheels and moved to her permanent location.”

Also like Howard and Chastain, mobile homes are popular—so popular that they have become a target for private equity firms, who have started purchasing mobile home sites. As Oliver put it: “The homes of some the poorest people in America are being snapped up by some of the richest people in America.” Mobile home parks have earned a lot of money for the Carlyle Group and Warren Buffett, who owns Clayton mobile homes, which made $ 911 million pre-tax dollars last year. Those unlikely bedfellows have led to conflict in the form of rising rents and fees that have left already impoverished Americans with even fewer options.

For mobile homes owners, the “cars you live in” are reportedly an investment that always go down in value. They are an even worse investment if you don’t own the land that the mobile home is parked on, because “mobile homes are mobile about as much king crabs are actually kings,” said Oliver.

That lack of mobility of tenants is attractive to investors, because they quite literally have a captive audience. As Frank Rolfe, a mobile home investor, put it, buying a mobile home park is like owning “a Waffle House where everyone is chained to the booths,” which Oliver suggested was a good idea for Jordan Peele’s next horror movie.

To warn people about the risks of investing in a mobile home, Oliver and The Good Place’s D’Arcy Carden made an honest ad for potential home buyers.

John Oliver Body Slams WWE Ahead of ‘WrestleMania’

John Oliver put aside politics for Sunday night’s episode of Last Week Tonight, and focused on professional wrestling, or as he calls it, the “only good excuse to wear a onesie.” “That’s right babies, you’re not pulling it off,” Oliver said.

While it may come as a surprise, Oliver claims he is a fan of wrestling and the WWE, which he finds “generally entertaining.” He’s not alone: The WWE has a billion fans on social media and, as per Oliver, earned $ 930.2 million in revenue last year. WrestleMania, WWE’s flagship event, rakes in more viewers than baseball’s World Series.

While WWE is fun to watch, especially compared to every other show that isn’t “a guy exploding through a table,” Oliver says there is a very dark side to the franchise, including the “shockingly high” death rates of pro wrestlers. The figure is so high—even compared to NFL players—that Oliver jokes it’s like “test pilots who lied on their resumes” or “zookeepers who aren’t going to just let some f—ing baboon talk to them like that.” While Oliver doesn’t get into specifics about the early death rate for wrestlers, he does note that WWE founder and owner Vince McMahon doesn’t provide health insurance or worker’s compensation for the stars. That’s because, according to Oliver, the WWE wrestlers are independent contractors who have exclusive contracts with the WWE and can’t work for anyone else, but are not technically employees of the company.

As Oliver explains, it’s because “McMahon plays an a—hole on TV, but is also an a–hole in real life.” According to Oliver, when you take “independent contractors working in a monopolized industry largely free from meaningful oversight who are able to be fired at any time, you wind up with huge potential for unsafe conduct.” To back up the claim, Oliver showed interviews with former wrestlers who pushed themselves to work when they were sick or injured, because if they didn’t they would not be paid and could potentially be fired. According to Oliver, the WWE is now worse than the NFL when it comes to taking care of its athletes. “When you have lost the moral high ground to the f—ing NFL you are morally subterranean,“ Oliver said.

There might be hope, though. Wrestling fans have become increasingly vocal and they genuinely care about the wrestling stars. If fans want McMahon to take better care of his employees—or even recognize them as employees—WrestleMania is coming up and, Oliver pointed out that it could be a good place to fight for change. “The event is live, the crowd is miked, they won’t be able to cut the chants out,” Oliver said. And then to make sure his point was clear “in the preferred language of wrestling of fans,” Oliver played a WWE-style ad pressing for “all your favorite wrestlers” having access to retirement accounts, workers compensation and family and medical leave.
