Nation’s Largest Black Bank Launches Campaign to Close the Racial Wealth Gap

It’s been more than 150 years, but black Americans still remain chained by the legacy of slavery. One of the most glaring effects of America’s original sin is the racial wealth gap. Because of centuries of economic oppression that intentionally barred African Americans from access to capital, white families today hold nearly 10 times the amount of wealth as black families as the median family wealth for white Americans is $ 171,000 compared to just $ 17,600 for blacks. Meanwhile, black Americans hold just 3% of the nation’s total wealth, despite being 13% of the population, according to the New York Times #1619 Project. That’s why the work of black banks is so important.

To address the systemic issue, OneUnited Bank launched BankBlack X, a nationwide campaign that aims to close the racial wealth gap. The purpose of the campaign is to galvanize and educate black folks about money and make financial literacy a core value of the black community.

“We have many weapons to affect change, starting with the truth. The reality is that almost everything we have been taught about Black Americans and money has been wrong,” said Teri Williams, president and COO of OneUnited, in a press release. “We have been bamboozled and led astray…for 400 years. We need to share the truth to make financial literacy a core value of our community!”

According to the bank’s website, BankBlack X will use technology and tap new socially conscious leaders to promote a sense of black pride and the achievements of African Americans. “Despite facing discrimination for over 400 years, black Americans have been able to advance equality, for themselves and other communities that face rampant discrimination,” reads the press release.

BankBlack X will offer tools and resources to promote financial literacy, including the free online Financial Education Center, the new BankBlack Card, and new features like BankBlack Early Pay, which enables customers to get paid two days early. The Bank is also partnering with Sirius Radio Urban View to hold a town hall meeting on the New York Times #1619Project on November 5..

OneUnited Bank is the largest black-owned bank in the U.S. and ranks as no. 1 on BLACK ENTERPRISE’s BE 100‘s Bank List, with $ 656 million in assets. Founded in 1968, the financial institution has been at the forefront of promoting black economic empowerment. Earlier this year, the bank launched “The Queen Card,” a Visa debit card with the image of an iconic black woman, as part of the bank’s Royalty Campaign. In 2017, the bank partnered with The Breakfast Club to raise over $ 700,000 to support social justice initiatives and activists. Back in 2014, it launched the Unity Visa Card, to help people rebuild their credit through a secured credit card as an alternative to a prepaid debit card.

PGA of America Launches New Series With Black Enterprise

The PGA of America, the professional trade association that represents 29,000 professionals with careers in the business of golf, wants you to know that golf is for everyone. But it’s not just telling you; it’s launching a video podcast series to show you.

The series is called “On The Tee,” and the premiere episode features Sandy Cross, Chief People Officer of the PGA, introducing the campaign and explaining the organization’s ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion.

“We’re trying to make a very intentional shift in the golf industry from what historically was an exclusive industry and sport to becoming exclusively inclusive,” Cross says.


A new episode will debut each month over the next few months, featuring PGA professionals talking about the industry’s efforts to diversify and spotlighting programs such as PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) for military veterans and PGA WORKS for a more inclusive workforce.

The goals of the series include:

  • to grow the game and drive greater inclusion across the golf industry by reaching a broader audience
  • to provide awareness to golf consumers about all the uniquely rewarding opportunities the golf industry has to offer those who participate in the game, workforce, and supply chain of golf
  • to showcase those from diverse backgrounds already working and playing in the industry (their career paths and stories of their success) in order for people from those historically underrepresented audiences to one day see themselves playing, working, and supplying the golf industry.

The PGA strategically partnered with Black Enterprise for “On The Tee” to provide an authentic and well respected voice in the African American community to help achieve its vision of a golf industry that mirrors America.

Mark Sanford Launches 2020 Republican Challenge to Trump

Mark Sanford, the former South Carolina governor and congressman, has decided to launch a longshot Republican challenge to President Donald Trump, saying Sunday that he aims to put his Appalachian trail travails behind him for good as he tries to navigate a path to the presidency.

“I am here to tell you now that I am going to get in,” Sanford said in an interview on “Fox News Sunday.” ”This is the beginning of a long walk.”

When asked why he was taking on an incumbent who’s popular within the party, Sanford said: “I think we need to have a conversation on what it means to be a Republican. I think that as the Republican Party, we have lost our way.”

The 59-year-old Sanford has long been an outspoken critic of Trump’s, frequently questioning his motivations and qualifications during the run-up to the 2016 presidential election and calling Trump’s candidacy “a particularly tough pill to swallow.”

Ultimately, though, Sanford said he would support Trump in the 2016 general election, although he had “no stomach for his personal style and his penchant for regularly demeaning others,” continuing a drumbeat that the then-candidate release his tax returns.

As Sanford sought reelection to his post representing South Carolina’s 1st District in 2018, drawing a primary challenger who embraced Trump, the president took interest in the race. State Rep. Katie Arrington repeatedly aired ads featuring Sanford’s on-air critiques of Trump and attached the “Never Trump” moniker to Sanford, a condemnation in a state that Trump carried by double digits in 2016.

Although unlikely to have had a significant impact on the results, Trump endorsed Arrington just hours before the polls closed, tweeting that Sanford “has been very unhelpful to me in my campaign” and that “He is better off in Argentina” — a reference to Sanford’s secret 2009 rendezvous to South America for an extramarital affair while his in-the-dark gubernatorial staff told reporters he was hiking the Appalachian Trail.

Asked Sunday if that incident could be a distraction to his campaign, Sanford said that the aftermath had forced him to attain a new “level of empathy.”

“I profoundly apologize for that,” he added, noting that South Carolina voters subsequently forgave him politically and sent him back to Congress.

Days after his first-ever political loss , Sanford described Trumpism as “a cancerous growth,” warning the GOP that the cancer is spreading.

“We have a president that will tell numerous dis-truths in the course of a day, yet that’s not challenged,” Sanford said. “What’s cancerous here is in an open political system, there has to be some measure of objective truth.”

Sanford won three terms for U.S. House in the 1990s, then two four-year terms as governor before the affair marred the end of his second term. He returned to politics a couple of years later and won a special election to his old U.S. House seat in 2013, holding on twice more.

Throughout his political career, Sanford has played up his outsider credentials — both in the U.S. House, where he supported a box to check on federal tax returns to put $ 3 toward the national debt, and as governor, bringing a pair of squealing pigs to the state House and Senate chamber to protest what he call pork spending.

As the main focus of his presidential bid, Sanford has said he plans to zero in on holding down federal spending, an issue on which he has railed since his initial stint in the House. Known during his Capitol Hill years as a deficit hawk, Sanford expressed a determination to bring debt and fiscal restraint into the national conversation.

“Let’s go out and try to force a conversation about that which is not being talked about in this country,” Sanford said Sunday.

If he hadn’t decided to run for president, Sanford had said he might start a think tank devoted to fiscal conservatism.

Sanford won’t be able to compete in his home state of South Carolina, which on Saturday – along with Nevada and Kansas – announced it won’t hold presidential nominating balloting in 2020, erecting more hurdles for the longshot candidates challenging Trump.

Sanford’s possible presidential motivations immediately drew skepticism from some South Carolina political observers who have watched him plot a political comeback before and questioned whether he was merely seeking publicity and relevance following a defeat in last year’s primary.

Last month, Sanford acknowledged his motivations in an interview with The Associated Press .

“It’s not as if I’m saying, you know, I think I can become president,” he said. “But I think you can change the debate, and you might even have an impact on the general election.”

“I am here to tell you now that I am going to get in,” Sanford said in an interview on “Fox News Sunday.”

Russia launches test of new rocket booster, sends humanoid robot into space

All eyes were on the International Space Station yesterday as NASA astronauts performed a spacewalk to install a new docking port that will allow commercial vehicles to latch onto the orbiting laboratory. Meanwhile, Russia was preparing for some serious work of its own, carrying out a crucial test of its new rocket booster which is expected to replace the stalwart Soyuz-FG rocket sometime in 2020.

That mission kicked off at 8:38 a.m. local time from Russia’s launchpad in Kazakhstan, successfully sending an uncrewed Soyuz capsule skyward on a path toward the International Space Station. The vehicle was empty of any human travelers, but it did have one inhabitant: a humanoid robot strapped into the commander’s seat.

‘Black-Ish’’s Marcus Scribner Launches Campaign To Help Families In Need Kick Off The School Year

Going back to school is exciting for kids. They can’t wait to show off their new clothes, backpacks and tell all of their friends and teachers about their summer. But, for some parents back to school season is extremely stressful.  Black-ish star Marcus Scribner, Frito-Lay, and Feed the Children have joined forces to help those in need to alleviate the stress of back to school season.

On Wednesday, over 200 Los Angeles residents were invited to participate in the Snackable Notes Back-to-School Kick Off, in which families received brand new backpacks, toiletries, school supplies, board games, and children’s books in order to help them jumpstart a brand new year of scholastic achievement.

“I teamed up with Frito-Lay and Feed the Children to help these families get back to school on the right foot,” Scribner told The Root. “It means a lot to me. And it’s nice to be able to see all these families come in and collect spiral notebooks, sharpeners and all the things that I remember needing in school. And just seeing all the happy faces.”

The 19-year-old has a busy schedule but said he made it a priority to give back to his community. Accoriding to The Root, you can sense a great sense of pride in his voice when he reveals, “I grew up on Crenshaw and Pico.”

Families also received food donations and variety packs of Frito-Lay’s Snackable Notes, which allow parents to relay personal messages on their child’s snack of choice.

Snackable Notes also involve a philanthropic element. For each note filled out and submitted to their website, Frito-Lay will donate a dollar to Feed the Children.

“The Snackable Notes are super dope,” Scribner told The Root. “You can write inspiring notes to your loved ones. My mom used to write notes on the paper lunch bag whenever she would send me to school. It just really helps to brighten someone’s day.”

“This means a lot,” one mother who declined to share her name told The Root. “It really helps us out because you know sometimes we can’t afford the price of things.”

“I have four children and having to pay for everything is a lot. So the books, the games, everything is just so amazing,” another parent added. “Not only do they have their things for school, but we do family time. So it’s great to have these things to allow us to spend time together as a family.”

Scribner hopes that others feel inspired to give back to their communities in any way they can.

“We all have something to offer. We all have a platform,” Scribner said. “Use what makes you unique to help others around you and to uplift those who uplifted you.”

This year we’ve been treated to a load of vegan goodies – from vegan Easter eggs, to vegan tuna (yep, it’s a thing), there are more options than ever before for anyone who is looking for meat and animal product-free food items.

And now Aldi is launching their own vegan sausage rolls and we’re so here for it.

The supermarket revealed that they’ll be stocking Mae’s Kitchen Vegan No Sausage rolls which are ‘wrapped in flaky, golden puff pastry and are the perfect meat-free and vegan contender to the much-loved British favourite.’

Made using soya, the meat-free sausage rolls come in at £1.19 for a pack of four.

They’re part of a new frozen vegan range from Aldi, which also includes Vegan No Beef Burgers and Vegan No Chicken Burgers (both £1.19 for a pack of two).

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi, says: ‘The launch of our new vegan range is in response to our growing, ethically inspired customer base, looking for delicious alternatives to meat and another example of our ongoing commitment to cater for all diets, at everyday low prices.

‘We look forward to expanding our vegan offering even further over the coming months.’

Rihanna Launches Brand Fenty In Paris Store

PARIS (AP) — Rihanna, the first black woman in history to head up a major Parisian luxury house, is unveiling her first fashion designs for Fenty at a pop-up store in Paris.

The collection, named after the singer-turned-designer’s last name, comprises ready-to-wear, footwear, accessories, and eyewear and is available for sale Paris’ Le Marais area from Friday and will debut online May 29.

“This is a moment in history,” Rihanna, 31, said at a preview of the store in a white structure tuxedo dress. “It’s a big deal for me and my entire generation.”

News of the singer’s groundbreaking new deal with LVMH, the world’s largest luxury group, shook up the fashion industry earlier this month.

The Barbados-born star’s lines are the second time LVMH has created an original brand.

But the move also acknowledges the fashion industry of today considers a major popstar can have as much to say in fashion design as established and trained designers such as Nicolas Ghesquiere of Louis Vuitton, or even the lauded Alber Elbaz, formerly of Lanvin, who is out of work.

Fenty has been heralded by some critics as the first major house of the Instagram age.

Fenty says the brand will be based in Paris, like its parent company, conglomerate LVMH, but will operate from a digital flagship on a “See-Now-Wear-Now” model forgoing to usual luxury fashion seasonal previewed designs.

“They were flexible enough to allow me to have a different perspective on the way I wanted to release things,” she said. “Coming from such a traditional background in fashion (as LVMH), you don’t think there’s another way that will work and they allowed me to do that.”

It’s expected to capitalize on the acclaim received by her most popular luxury venture Fenty Beauty line in 2017 — which some said revolutionized the makeup industry by celebrating diversity by showcasing foundations in 40 shades.

If she looks calm, “it’s a facade,” acknowledged the star when faced with the expectations before the historic launch.

Cardi B. Album Artist Launches Brand Calling Out Virgil Abloh’s Silence on Diversity

Nicky Chulo is a graphic designer who has helped create album covers for household names including Cardi B. However, he views his art as more than just work; it’s a vessel he uses to engage with contemporaries and create dialogue through creativity. For instance, his opinion about the lack of inclusion in the fashion industry and criticism about Virgil Abloh inspired him to create his own fashion brand.

As creative director at Louis Vuitton, Abloh has a high-ranking position in fashion. Last month, Abloh shared a behind-the-scenes look at a party for his brand Off-White. The footage sparked a firestorm of backlash on social media from critics who called the Off-White team too white and noted that there appeared to be no black art directors for a brand owned by a black man.

Chulo created his own apparel line called “Off-Black” in what he says is to call Abloh to task while using the proceeds to empower black creatives.

In an interview with BLACK ENTERPRISE, Chulo explained how art can be a conduit for purposeful dialogue.

BLACK ENTERPRISE: Describe your background as a designer and your progression into your current role.
Nicky Chulo: I’m currently an art director at Atlantic Records with a background in graphic design and typography. I’ve been a graphic designer for almost 10 years now and it’s been a very wild ride. To keep it short, I came up in Northern Virginia, went to college in Atlanta (SCAD), and jumped into the corporate side of my career in New York circa 2013.

 

What are some of your other most impactful projects to date?
 
I have two. I would have to say hands down Trap Karaoke is the most impactful project I’ve had the pleasure of being a part of. Trap Karaoke is a very black, very safe, and very wholesome place where everyone can have a good time. A quick sum up for those who don’t know: Trap Karaoke is an event where you can sign up to perform your favorite song on stage in front of a crowd whose sole purpose is to sing along with and encourage you. On a few occasions, we’ve had people performing their song and the musician who created said song would join them on stage and perform. It’s a really beautiful thing.

 

The second most impactful project to me was working with Sylvan LaCue on his Apologies In Advance album. I had the pleasure of working with Sylvan and his team to develop the concept and visuals. Apologies In Advance is about growth, acceptance, how to deal with hardships, and the list goes on. It’s about healing and becoming the best person you can be and as a millennial, I can say it’s a priceless project. Jay Z gives us free game in the form of witty classy lyricism and Sylvan gives us free band-aids in the form of honest, vulnerable words.

What inspired you to create your latest t-shirt design “Off-Black”?
What inspired Off-Black is the lack of diversity on Virgil’s “Off-White” team. Even if he’s just the “face” of the brand I believe he has a responsibility to speak up on behalf of diversity. I’m not discrediting the talent at Off-White, but knowing how hard I worked, especially as a designer of color, to get to where I am, it hurt a bit. Blood, sweat, tears, relationships, lack of sleep, and having to be twice if not three times as good to be seen. Having to be ready for anything at all times. We need more people of color in the room. We need more people of color inside the room.

 

 What type of dialogue are you looking to create with the “Off-Black” merchandise?

I remember Virgil once tweeted “Design is the freshest scam” and I thought that was a very very cornball tweet. Design is purposeful always.

Why were you initially hesitant to release the apparel? 

I was definitely hesitant at first. I knew if I was going to do this I had to be all in. In the end, I found out that Virgil was blocking people who reached out to him in his Instagram messages with the #Diversity hashtag, which I think is dismissive and irresponsible. You have a platform and we want answers to a particular question, why not give them to us? Right or wrong, why not be transparent? Lastly, my girl was like “Baby, you know you want to do this” and I was like “Angel, you are 100% right,” and I got busy.

 

How has the culture rallied behind your message?
Man. I mean the culture pulled up with open arms, dollars, and megaphones.

 

What will you do with the proceeds? 
 
One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to The Whlgns for Leaders Amongst Leaders. I think the conversation we’ve started is equally, if not more important, than the money we’re raising. I hope to inspire black creatives with this Hail Mary of a project. I’m grateful I was in a position to take this on.

Ms. Nelson has launched a $ 100,000 GoFundMe effort to support other women in the journey of locating bras that both look and feel good in an overall bid to promote breast health.

Some readers might remember Nelson as one of our Baes and Baddies entries under the name persephanii, and as we noted then, her curvaceous frame is without a doubt a head-turner. However, she’s noticed the plight of women of her busty ilk in noting that many of them are wearing ill-fitting bras and how that could be contributing to their back pain and the like.

I am a size 34S and I have no pain associated with my back and shoulders from having large breasts! It was not always like that. I wore poor suppprting bras thatugged on my back and shoulders to the point of me considering having a breast reduction.

Breast health is extremely important. Finding the right size is even more important. Many women walk around with pain in their back, shoulder and chest because they cannot find the right size. As a breast healthy woman I fear there could be a correlation to breast diseases and wearing poor supporting bras. I would like to raise money to not only purchase new bras for myself but also do give aways and events and help other women with large breasts find bras that fit well, improve their posture and help get rid of pain.

With all of that being said. BRA’S are expensive. Please donate if you’d love to see a reduction in pain and more confident breast healthy women near you!

Nelson kept it a stack in saying she wants to cop new wears for herself, but the larger goal of helping others is really the best part in all of this. Salute to her.

Wu-Tang Launches Lipstick Line And Announces Nov. 9 is ‘Wu-Tang Clan Day’

After creating the “cash rules everything around me” mantra, multiple classic hip-hop albums, and a blueprint for turning gritty street rap into mainstream success, the Wu-Tang Clan is giving the world lipstick.

The legendary rap group teamed up with Milk Makeup to launch their own lipstick line. The limited-edition collection is 100% vegan and comes in eight colors. Just like the hip-hop group, the lip colors are heavily inspired by Chinese culture—from its core ingredients to its package designs—to each of their names: Sacred, Fire, Chi, Flow, Frequency, Source, Cypher, and Ruckus, a reference to the I Ching Trigrams:


Although the collaboration may seem odd for the hardcore rappers, Wu-Tang’s RZA said it made sense since Milk Makeup founder Mazdack Rassi is a fellow New Yorker with whom he shares a lot of commonalities. He added that his wife, former Ford Model Agency model Talani Rabb-Diggs, loved the line idea and helped bring it into fruition.

“I have a great relationship with Milk’s founder, Rassi, and as New Yorkers, we’ve frequented some of the same circles,” RZA told Billboard. “We spoke about fashion and the cosmetic world and I revealed that my wife has a cool perspective about makeup [because] in her youth, she was in the modeling circles. She is a fan of Milk Makeup’s products and when [Rassi and I] talked about forming a collaboration that reflected our NYC sensibility and philosophy, makeup became the unique and unpredictable choice. The Milk Makeup collaboration was spearheaded by my wife.”


The line also pays homage to the group’s underground NYC roots and celebrates self-expression and strength. Harlem-born singer Teyana Taylor is featured in a video ad promoting the collection as a Wu Warrior, performing Kung Fu-inspired choreography.

“In previous generations, the feminine energy has been dampened by the world. But now, women’s strength, beauty, and wisdom is finally being celebrated,” said RZA, according to The National. “Warriors come in all forms, but right now women are the modern warriors, unapologetic in their strength and speaking out about things they’ve held in or feared they’d be shunned for, on both a personal and political level.”

The collection is sold exclusively on MilkMakeup.com for $ 440 or $ 55 for each lip color.

On Thursday, Wu-Tang held an event to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their iconic debut album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), with the premiere of a short documentary titled, For the Children: 25 Years of Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). In the film, the Staten Island-born rappers reflect on their journey from the early days of their careers to ascending to hip-hop icons. A$ AP Rocky, A$ AP Ferg, and Gary Vaynerchuck also make appearances in the film.

At the film’s debut in Brooklyn, RZA announced Nov. 9 as “Wu-Tang Day” to commemorate the release of the groundbreaking album on Nov. 9, 1993. “Tomorrow, Staten Island, New York, is going to recognize Nov. 9 as the official Wu-Tang Clan day,” he declared.

Apple launches repair program for iPhone X units with faulty displays

Though not a widespread problem by any means, some iPhone X users over the past few months have experienced issues with non-responsive and temperamental displays. In light of this, Apple today launched a new replacement program for iPhone X users who have encountered this particular touch issue.

Per an Apple support document, impacted devices tend to exhibit one or two behaviors. Specifically, impacted iPhone X units will either not respond to touch at all or will react even when not touched. Either way, it’s undoubtedly a frustrating usability issue, especially for a device that was priced in excess of $ 999.

R&B artist and now tech startup founder, Kehlani has been a very busy woman. Not only did she just announce her pregnancy, but today she is officially announcing the launch of her new app, Flora, an app that inspires young people to make positive changes in their lives.

Through a gamification model, the app provides users with challenges and every time a specific challenge is completed they are allowed to collect coins. Once you amass a certain amount of coins, you are allowed to exchange them for prizes. “It’s pretty awesome to me because not only does it let you get a cool prize,” said Kehlani as she explained the platform in a recent YouTube Live, “but you get to do a really fun challenge that actually actively changes something in your life, not just for yourself but, for the world, and for others.”

In addition to the app having a gamification component, it boasts an awesome community where players can support one another’s endeavors. “You can create your account and leave comments on other people’s challenges,” continued Kehlani. “Maybe I have a suggestion on how you can do the challenge better. Maybe I have a suggestion on how we can possibly compete and do our challenge at the same time. Prior to the announcement, the app amassed 22k in a pre-launch that took place over a 48-hour period.

What It Does: Alerts are immediately sent to lifeguards if a shark is detected via the optus network. Marine life is detected by a groundbreaking sonar system that SMS created. Once the shark is detected by the clever buoy, a real-time message is sent.

A More In-Depth Understanding: “The monitoring system is designed to be deployed beyond the surf zone and utilizes multibeam sonar transducers that are mounted on the ocean floor coupled with newly developed detection software to scan for marine life.  The system creates a “virtual net” at the deployment locations and once an object is detected in the area, the software interrogates the target’s swimming pattern to determine the type of object and potential species.

If the target is determined to exhibit shark like movement patterns, information is transmitted to lifeguards within seconds notifying them of the target and the location via a real-time mobile application with automated notifications and warning information.” www.sharkmitigation.com

Bride Who Wed in Hospital So Ailing Father Could Walk Her Down Aisle Launches Tribute Foundation

Last November, Vieneese Stanton was on top of the world as her father, Preston Rolan, walked her down the aisle at University of California, San Francisco Medical Center where she wed Douglas Stanton.

Less than a month later, Rolan died from acute myeloid leukemia, leaving Vieneese devastated. Now the 28-year-old new mother is determined to preserve her father’s memory through her newly-minted Stanton Standards Foundation.

“A lot of people connected to us after they saw our wedding story go viral, and having my dad be there for us. So we started thinking, like, what if we could do the same thing for other families? UCSF hospital really put in a lot of effort to make that day happen for us… So we thought, ‘What if we formed an organization like that for people?’ ”

So, they did. They launched the organization to provide lasting memories for family members that have a loved one with a terminal illness. By May of this year, the foundation was officially established as a non-profit 501(c)3 organization.

With that, the Stantons got to work. The foundation’s first helped Yvonne, who has a heart condition and has about a year left to live. Through the foundation, Vieneese and Douglas raised hundreds of dollars to treat Yvonne and her close friends and family to a nice dinner at Oakland’s Southern Cafe.

“We hosted a rose ceremony where we bought her two bouquets of roses and we had her family and friends go around and they each gave her a rose. We really believe in giving people their roses while we can still smell them,” she says.

“They shared with Yvonne their greatest memories with her. They reminisced on good times they had with her and she was able to really enjoy those moments. “That’s something that’s always done at funerals.”

The couple shared smiling photos of Yvonne Barela with her friends and family on the foundation’s website. And Vieneese says she’s eager to create lasting memories for more families in the future.

The foundation is accepting donations on its website and through a GoFundMe page set up for the organization.

“We really want to be a reliable resource when a family says, ‘We have a loved one who’s about to pass away. Are you able to help us?’ We want to say yes. We don’t want to tell them to wait six months,” Vieneese tells PEOPLE.

“We really want to be proactive because with terminal illness time is limited. We want to be there for the families because we believe that helps with the mourning process. I can speak for myself when I say that. I miss my dad like crazy. I think my father would be ecstatic if he were here today.”

Vieneese’s story made headlines last year, as photos of her with her ailing father made their way around the Internet. In the months after Rolan’s death, Vieneese and Douglas welcomed their first child, now 6-month-old Noelle.

“I miss my dad like crazy. Being a parent for the first time and not having my parents has been emotional at times,” she says, alluding to her late mother. “My daughter is awesome and my husband is awesome. Together we’re pushing through it.”
