Taraji P. Henson Opens Up About Her ‘Miserable’ Experience On ‘Person Of Interest’

Taraji P. Henson is opening up about her exit from CBS’ “Person of Interest,” and it nearly six years after her character, NYPD Detective Joss Carter, was fatally shot.

During Variety‘s annual Actor on Actor conversations the “Empire” star said, “I had to leave a show before, and it was the most money I’d ever seen in my life, and I was so miserable. It was stealing my joy. I just remember praying to God: ‘God, I’m not happy creatively.’

“[T]he next day, I called the producer. He got it. And I walked away, not even knowing where I was going,” she continued. “I ended up doing a play in Pasadena.”

Henson went on to perform at the Pasadena Playhouse’s world premiere of the play “Above the Fold.”

“I didn’t care about who was coming to the theater, executives or casting directors. It was about Taraji falling back in love with this craft,” she said during the Variety chat. “Fox had to woo me to do Empire]. I wouldn’t read the script. I was done with television.”

Back in November 2013 Henson dished about her shocking exit from POI to TVLine: “We always knew it was going to happen, so it wasn’t a surprise. It was just about when. But, yeah, I found out on Valentine’s Day [2013].”

And she wasn’t as heartbroken over her character’s demise as the audience was.

“I don’t think I’m there in my career yet, where I ride out a show until the wheels fall off. I’m still getting calls  by big-time movie directors and I still have a lot of movies I want to do. So that was always the plan. I don’t want people to think that we had some kind of argument, or there was a falling out. No, no, no. We’re all on the same page and it’s all good.”

Series EP Jonah Nolan also spoke of the decision to kill off Carter to TVLine, “I flew out early in the year to sit down with Taraji and say, ‘OK, here’s where we’re going,’ and she knew [it had been a possibility]. It was a wonderful but bittersweet conversation.”

He added, “the promise we made to Taraji and all of our actors is we weren’t signing them up for a show where, even if everyone was wildly successful and the ratings were great, we’d have them spin wheels for 200 episodes.”

This will be the first person to hear the news that the royal baby has arrived

Surprise, surprise…

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced the news that they were expecting their first baby together last year, with the future arrival’s due date said to be in April.

Now, just weeks away, speculation is rising around every aspect of the royal baby and its parents, from the baby’s gender and selected God parents to when the family will move to their new Frogmore Cottage home and the shade of vegan paint set to decorate the nursery.

This week however, everyone has been talking about the Queen’s role in the royal baby’s arrival, with the monarch said to be the first person to be informed once the baby has been born.

Yes, really. Queen Elizabeth will reportedly receive a call informing her that the baby has arrived and what its gender is, before anyone else is informed, even Meghan’s mum, Doria Ragland.

And the Queen’s power in terms of the royal baby won’t stop there, with it reported this week that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will actually have to change the royal baby name if HRH doesn’t approve.

‘The Queen has the power to say what their title is,’ Royal commentator Kate Williams explained in an interview with CNN. ‘But in the case of names, it is more of an informal conversation.’

She continued: ‘Of course they have such respect for the Queen that if she says “I really don’t like that name,” they’d definitely take that into account.

Judging by the bookies odds by William Hill however, there’s a pretty good bet that she’ll approve, with the most popular predictions honouring royal family members.

Victoria is in the top spot with odds of 8/1, followed by Diana at 10/1 and then Alice and Isabella. And in terms of boys names, top predictions include Arthur, Edward and James.

What will the couple name their newborn? There’s not long to wait and see, but we can all get in line behind the Queen to find out.

Marsai Martin Becomes The Youngest Person To Have First-Look Deal At Universal

We’ve said it before, and we’re going to say it again: Black girls really are magic.

A month after the trailer for her upcoming comedy “Little” dropped, 14-year-old Black-ish actress Marsai Martin has just signed a first-look deal with Universal Pictures.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Martin will develop scripted projects for Universal alongside Joshua Martin (co-founder), Carol Martin (vice president) and Prince Baggett (head of creative).

Even better? Marsai is making history with this move: She’s the youngest person to get a first-look deal at Universal or an major studio.

Peter Cramer, president, Universal Pictures, told THR that Marsai is definitely “a star on the rise” who is “brilliant.”

“Working with emerging talent is a cornerstone of Universal’s overall slate strategy, and Marsai is a star on the rise,” he said.

Adding, “She is not only tremendously talented in front of the camera but offers a unique perspective as a creator and producer that will resonate with all audiences. We look forward to moviegoers getting to see how brilliant she is in Little and watching her evolve as a filmmaker here at Universal.”

“I am so excited for the magic I’ll be able to create and produce with Universal,” Marsai said.

“Mr. Cramer and Ms. [Donna] Langley’s commitment to investing in and uplifting diverse and young voices is both refreshing and important, and I’m happy to be a part of that legacy. My goal is to show young women and girls that our voices and ideas matter and you are never too young to dream BIG!”

So what’s up next for her?

THR writes that Marsai will star in StepMonster, a comedy about a teenage girl (Martin) who is adjusting to life with a new stepmother and has to learn that sometimes the only way to tame a monster is to make peace with it (especially if the monster is you).

As we previously reported, Marsai became the youngest executive producer in Hollywood with her highly anticipated film “Little.”

Little, which also stars Issa Rae and Regina Hall, centers on a insufferable tech mogul, Jordan Sanders, who wakes up as the 13-year-old version of herself.

Martin plays a young Sanders while Regina Hall is perfect as the adult exec who tortures her employees, including April (Issa Rae). Jordan and April bond as the roles are reversed and April finds herself bossing around her younger, older boss.

Little, an idea from Martin who was inspired by Tom Hanks’ body-swapping classic Big, makes Martin the youngest Black executive producer in Hollywood.

Get it sis!

Dolly Parton Honored as MusiCares Person of the Year Ahead of 2019 Grammys

(LOS ANGELES) — Nobody pokes more fun at Dolly Parton — all hair, sequins, nine-inch nails and five-inch stilettos — than the country superstar herself.

Parton was celebrated for her musical achievements and philanthropic work as MusiCares Person of the Year on Friday night. She’s the first country artist to be saluted in the tribute’s 29-year history.

Garth Brooks, Brandi Carlile, Miley Cyrus, Shawn Mendes, Kacey Musgraves, Willie Nelson, Katy Perry, Pink, Chris Stapleton and Don Henley were among those honoring the 73-year-old singer-songwriter two days before the Grammy Awards.

“All of my life I have been known for two things. Well, not them,” the well-endowed Parton joked in a bawdy acceptance speech. “I’ve also been known as a singer and songwriter too. Although I’m not complaining. Ol’ Pancho and Lefty’s been pretty good to me. Everybody always expects me to do a boob joke and I like to do that right up front.”

Surprising Parton with her award and earning a standing ovation were Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt, who teamed with Parton for two successful “Trio” albums. It was a rare public appearance for Ronstadt, who can’t sing anymore because of Parkinson’s disease, which Parton mentioned.

“It has been a wonderful journey,” Parton said.

As Parton rushed to embrace Harris and Ronstadt, her award crashed to the floor. It appeared to survive intact.

Parton said people ask her about it being a man’s world when she got into the music business in the 1960s.

“I never met a man that I didn’t like and I never met a man whose (rear) I couldn’t kick if he didn’t treat me with the right respect,” she said, drawing raucous cheers.

Earlier, Parton watched from the audience while other performers sampled her vast catalog.

Wearing a black jacket with Parton’s visage on the back, Pink kicked off the evening with a powerhouse rendition of the man-stealing song “Jolene.”

Gospel singer Yolanda Adams received a standing ovation for “I Will Always Love You,” the Parton-penned song famously covered by Whitney Houston.

“Yolanda, you killed that,” said Karen Fairchild of Little Big Town.

Cyrus, who is Parton’s goddaughter, and Mendes dueted on “Islands in the Stream” with Mark Ronson on guitar. Grammy nominee Carlile and Nelson sang “Everything’s Beautiful (In Its Own Way).”

“We love you, Doll,” Nelson said.

Backed by a horn section, Stapleton tackled “9 to 5,” getting the audience clapping along to Parton’s ode to empowered yet challenged working women.

Musgraves and Perry teamed up on “Here You Come Again,” with Perry decked out in lilac fringe with matching boots and cowboy hat.

“We want to be just like her when we grow up,” Perry told the crowd.

Brooks and his wife Trisha Yearwood teamed up on “Old Flames Can’t Hold a Candle To You,” sealing it with a kiss.

Henley and Vince Gill strummed guitars on “Eagle When She Flies.”

Backed by a choir, Leon Bridges and Mavis Staples took the crowd to church on “Not Enough.” Bridges got into the spirit of the evening with white cowboy boots and a denim jacket with his name and a white horse on the back and red barn patch on the front.

“It’s been such a thrill for me tonight to see all these great artists singing songs I’ve written or been a part of,” Parton said. “Watching them is sort of like watching porn. You’re not personally involved but you still get off on it.”

The crowd roared and Parton said, “Hey, don’t blame me. At my age you’ll take anything you can get.”

She closed the evening by performing “Coat of Many Colors.

“I had my nails too long to pick tonight because I’m gettin’ ready for the Grammys,” Parton explained in having Linda Perry play guitar.

Friday’s dinner and auction at the Los Angeles Convention Center generated more than $ 6.7 million, Recording Academy president Neil Portnow said.

MusiCares, run by the Recording Academy, provides financial assistance to individuals in the music industry during times of financial, medical and personal need.

“Of course you know we hillbillies need MusiCares too,” Parton said. “We may not have sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll, but two out of three ain’t bad.”

The guilt-free guide to being a better person in 2019

We’re all trying our best to be ‘woke’, ethical and sustainable. But then again‚ sometimes it’s hard to know what the damn rules are. Here, Francesca Hornak breaks it down

Recycling

Essential, obviously. But if only waste disposal didn’t come with so many diktats. How clean must an empty pot of Yeo Valley be to guarantee recycling? What about an empty can of sustainably sourced tuna? Is a rinse fine, or does it need to go in the dishwasher, or is that a waste of energy? Which bin does cling film go in? What about cellophane? And Jiffy bags – part paper, part plastic? These are the kind of quandaries that have seen sane people get out of bed to give the hummus pot in the green box an extra wash, for luck.

Coffee Cups

Hooray for KeepCups! So simple, so stylish! Except that every morning one of two things will happen. You’ll either realise, as you rummage for the sodding cup at the front of a long, tetchy queue for coffee, that you have forgotten it and will have to sidle to your desk with a shameful disposable cup, conscious that yesterday you were talking loudly about ‘that documentary on plastics’. Or you’ll remember the KeepCup just as you’re about to leave home, and locate it sitting in your bag, coated in stale coffee from the day before. You’ll then make yourself late washing it, and detect a hint of Fairy Liquid in your flat white.

‘Why do I never have one of my 500 canvas totes when I’m actually in a shop?’

Facebook

Isn’t there something innately unclean about Facebook? Even before fake news and all its attendant moral dilemmas, the whole place always felt grubby, posting content for likes from people you neither like nor care about. But still we can’t help ourselves stalking the girl everyone fancied at school and then cursing Mark Zuckerberg for stealing another hour of our lives.

Bags for life

Is it wrong to miss, just slightly, the time when there was always a spare plastic bag kicking around at home? Something to line the bathroom bin with, or shove your muddy trainers in? It is wrong, and you know it. As a result, you now have a huge collection of bags for life under your sink, and an uneasy feeling that these might take even longer to biodegrade than the flimsy plastic bags of yesterday. See also: why do I never have one of my 500 canvas totes when I’m actually in a shop?

Periods

Once, you could unwrap a Tampax Compak without seeing a little grenade of toxic plastic, waiting to wash up on a beach. And in a few years’ time, we’ll probably all have mastered Mooncups and Dear Kate pants (does anyone else find this off-puttingly close to a nappy?). But until then, no woman should be begrudged the occasional Lil-Let.

Veganism

Touted as the no-brainer route to a more sustainable life (assuming you can find joy in life without cheese). That is, until you Google ‘air miles from almond milk’ or ‘is coconut oil worse for you than butter?’ and feel immediately exhausted. But let’s face it, who regularly has time to roast legs of lamb anyway? You’re probably unintentionally vegan half the time out of sheer culinary laziness. Job done.

Bella Hadid Gushes Over The Weeknd – He Is The ‘Most Beautiful Person’ I Know!

Bella Hadid and The Weeknd seem to be happier than ever now that they are back together! That being said, while doing a 73 Questions video for Vogue, the supermodel revealed that her singer beau being such eye candy helps make it work as well!

The Hadid sister made it very clear that from her point of view, The Weeknd is very handsome.

In fact, when she was asked who the most beautiful person she knows is, Bella, smiled sweetly and let the world know that it’s her boyfriend!

But that is not even the only time she gushed over him during the interview!

Bella also claims that he is the one who makes her laugh ‘the hardest’ as well!

Handsome AND funny? What more could you want from a significant other?

But when it comes to feeling beautiful, the model made it very clear that instead of relying on the world or her boyfriend to tell her, it’s something she finds within herself!

‘Probably when I just feel healthy and confident in myself,’ she responded.

She went on to give aspiring models some great advice, saying that: ‘The hardest part of the modeling industry is gaining respect from my peers. I think, there is a lot of pretty girls out there, so if you cannot be kind and work hard, there is no reason to do it.’

As fans remember, Bella and The Weeknd reunited earlier this year.

They were romantically involved years ago, but in 2016, they pressed pause on their relationship for a while.

Ever since rekindling their romance, the two have been caught together in public a lot, enjoying their love like never before!

Hopefully, this time around it’s forever for the two!

This is the most influential person on Twitter (and thankfully it’s not Donald Trump)

He’ll just have to shake it off.

Twitter’s long been the bastion of global discussions, sparking huge conversations with breaking news, silly memes and candid celebrity thoughts (some hilarious and amazing, others Kanye West). Well it turns out there’s a few big names on the platform that wield the most influence over the Twittersphere and new research by a company called Brandwatch revealed who was queen of the social media platform’s hearts. We’ve already given it away slightly, but yes – it turns out a female celeb was the most influential, so congratulations are in order for Taylor Swift.

The study looked at ‘a selection of criteria that added together to create [a celeb’s] influence score’, which took into account things like ‘followers, retweets and replies’ and ‘genuine engagement’. The named celebrity would also get bonus points depending on how influential the people they were engaging with were, so for instance if Chrissy Teigen and Michelle Obama started having a natter then it would bump their score way up.

Taylor Swift’s account @taylorswift13 came in at first place with the top influencer score of 98 and an eye-watering following of 84 million at the time Brandwatch’s study was published.

most influential person on twitter

Matt Baron/REX/Shutterstock

Besides being the most influential female celeb, she was the most popular of all time tailed closely by Liam Payne (yes, really) at 97.

Liam Payne, whose account @liampayne had a following of 33 million at the time of the study, actually responded to the news – on Twitter, obviously. He screenshotted the research and said, ‘Wow can’t quite believe this. Couldn’t have done it without you….thanks for listening.’

Following closely behind Taylor Swift and Liam Payne were Katy Perry, Kim Kardashian West, Demi Lovato and President Donald J. Trump who shared the same influencer score: 96. Trump’s predecessor Barack Obama slid in neatly behind him with a score of 95 alongside Selena Gomez, Jennifer Lopez, Justin Bieber, Cristiano Ronaldo amongst others.

There were a few surprising names we expected to be on the list but weren’t, including Twitter’s unofficial monarch Chrissy Teigen and Kanye West whose controversial tweets about slavery sparked a huge debate.

Marc Patrick/BFA/REX/Shutterstock

Women also dominated the game as Brandwatch claimed ‘the women in our lists had a higher influencer score than the men’ and especially female musicians. On the flip side, women on the lists were typically younger than the men on the platform with the average age for women being 36.5, nearly 10 years younger than the men’s influential score of 44.7 years old

Pretty wild stuff, hey? We just wish Brandwatch’s research had honed in on which were the most talked about moments of all time as well, as it feels like there have been so many this year. Maybe something to consider for 2019.

‘The View’s’ Joy Behar Rips Ivanka’s Email Hypocrisy: ‘How Stupid Can a Person Be?’

“Now we all know what a serious issue the guy in the White House thinks using personal email accounts for government business is,” Whoopi Goldberg said at the top of The View Tuesday morning, throwing to a montage of Donald Trump leading “lock her up” chants in reference to Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server during the 2016 campaign.

Now, according to a report from The Washington Post, we have learned that the president’s daughter Ivanka Trump used a personal email account for her own government business for the better part of last year. “How do you think they are going to spin this?” Goldberg asked. “Do you think anybody will be yelling lock her up?”

“You know what’s amazing is that this girl was there in 2016, I mean, was she in a convent?” Joy Behar asked in response. “She was watching TV just like the rest of us. How dumb can a person be to go and make the same mistake that he has been bitching about the whole time? People, wake up.”

Elvis Costello Is Mad as Hell: ‘I’ll Punch the Next Person’ Who Says I’m Struggling With Cancer

Stephen Done

“I know that’s a very attractive headline to say I’ve got cancer, but it’s just not founded in fact,” Elvis Costello insists after I mention a recent story that said he was in remission.

“I’m not going to critique other writers, because I had a very nice conversation with a young man the other day, and 99.9 percent of the article he wrote was really interesting, but he used the word ‘remission’ to describe my health, and therefore his editor decided to put cancer in the headline,” Costello explains, noticeably still upset about the incident. “I’m not in remission because I didn’t have cancer. How could I be in remission? I was relieved of something that may have caused cancer. So out of respect to my friends who recently have lost that particular fight, and to those that continue to have it, of which I have rather too many, I’d rather everyone get the words right.”

In fact, Costello and I had corresponded last summer, and he had claimed then he was fine, if a bit shocked and suitably heartened that anyone cared about his health, even while headlines made it sound as though he was at death’s door after he’d been forced to cancel a string of live shows.
