Why Trump abandoned his instinct to go public with his tax returns

President Donald Trump’s fight to keep his tax returns private is at odds with his own thinking in 2013 and 2014 that releasing them as part of a presidential bid would make him look like a smart businessman who had spent years lowering his taxable income, according to two people with firsthand knowledge of conversations at the time.

Democrats using Intel Committee to keep impeachment facts hidden from the public, says WSJ’s Kim Strassel

Congressional Democrats are skirting the past precedent of using the Judiciary Committee to impeach the president, and are instead relying on the House Intelligence Committee to shroud their work in darkness and keep vital facts hidden from the public, said Wall Street Journal columnist Kim Strassel.

Baby Archie Makes Rare Public Appearance In South Africa

(African News Agency via AP)

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — Baby Archie made a rare public appearance on Wednesday as his parents, Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, continued their first official tour as a family in South Africa.

Meghan held Archie as the royal couple met with Nobel Peace Prize winner and Archbishop Desmond Tutu in Cape Town.

The youngest member of Britain’s royal family had been out of the spotlight since his christening in July. Archie, born in May, is the first child of Prince Harry and the former Meghan Markle and seventh in line to the British throne.

Tutu greeted the baby with a delighted smile.

“It’s very heartwarming, let me tell you, very heartwarming to realize that you really, genuinely are caring people,” he told the royal couple, according to a statement by his Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation.

“We all try to make things better,” Harry replied.

The royal couple posted on social media a photo of the 87-year-old archbishop giving Archie a gentle kiss on the forehead.

“Thank you Archbishop Tutu for your incredibly warm hospitality, Archie loved meeting you!” they wrote.

Gifts for the baby included children’s books written and signed by the archbishop.

Tutu, who has been treated for prostate cancer for years, rarely makes public appearances. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his efforts to end the system of white minority rule, or apartheid, and promote racial reconciliation in South Africa, and he has lent his moral stature to causes and campaigns around the world over the years.

Tutu and his wife, Leah, last week called a meeting with the royal couple a “rare privilege and honor.”

The 10-day, multi-country tour also includes stops for Harry in Botswana, Angola and Malawi with a focus on wildlife protection, mental health and mine clearance — a topic given global attention by Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana, when she walked through an active mine field during an Africa visit years ago.

Legislation To End Surprise Medical Bills Has High Public Support — In Both Parties

Nearly 8 in 10 Americans support legislation to protect people from surprise medical bills, a new poll from the Kaiser Family Foundation shows.

That support persisted no matter which party was asked: 84% of Democrats, 78% of independents and 71% of Republicans said they support surprise billing legislation, according to the poll. (Kaiser Health News is an editorially independent program of the foundation.)

Surprise bills are the unexpected ― and often expensive — charges patients receive after getting care from a doctor or hospital not in their insurance network. The issue has attracted a lot of attention in recent years, with ongoing projects like KHN-NPR’s “Bill of the Month” series and Vox’s look at emergency room bills illuminating the scope of the problem. The White House and both parties on Capitol Hill have expressed interest in finding ways to protect consumers from the practice.

But Congress has been bombarded by relentless attack ads and deep-pocketed lobbying against legislation that would end surprise billing.

And with lawmakers returning to work this week after the summer recess, some of the supporters of legislation on Capitol Hill worry that effort may destroy their chances of passing an effective law.

Critics claim that the primary legislation under consideration — in which a patient’s insurance would pay the out-of-network provider based on the average of what other doctors nearby are paid — would result in doctors and hospitals being paid less.

But the KFF poll found 57% of respondents support passing legislation to address the problem even after hearing the critics’ argument.

And as Democratic and Republican politicians alike discuss dismantling the ACA, whether through implementing a “Medicare for All” plan or ruling the existing law unconstitutional, the poll also found the public has some reservations about making drastic changes to the health system.

Ahead of Thursday night’s Democratic presidential debate, the poll found that 55% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents prefer a presidential candidate who wants to build on the ACA. About 40% said they prefer one who wants to replace it with a Medicare for All plan, which some advocates such as Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders suggest would provide a single health plan for the entire country and replace all private insurance.

Those numbers are nearly identical to the findings in KFF’s last tracking poll in July.

KFF’s new poll showed the polarization that could undermine Democrats’ chances of unifying behind a single presidential candidate in 2020: 14% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents said they would vote only for a candidate who wants to replace the ACA with Medicare for All.

It also found 69% of all Americans support a government-administered public option health plan that consumers could opt into, a policy former Vice President Joe Biden included in his health plan. About 41% of Republicans said they support a public option.

That said, the poll shows many respondents do not see the difference between the policies that Democratic candidates are pitching: About 47% said a public option and a Medicare for All plan are similar.

The new poll also shows that support for the Affordable Care Act has hit an all-time high among Democrats, with 84% saying they view it favorably. The ACA became law in 2010.

KFF’s findings confirm that the Donald Trump presidency has galvanized Democratic support for the ACA, former President Barack Obama’s signature domestic policy. The percentage of Democrats who favor the law has increased by 11 percentage points since February 2017.

Among other policy questions, 70% of those surveyed said lowering prescription drug costs should be a major health care-related priority for Congress, and 69% said maintaining the ACA’s protections for those with preexisting conditions should be a top priority.

The KFF poll was conducted Sept. 3-8, with researchers surveying 1,205 adults by landline and cellphone, in English and Spanish. The margin of error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Any Time, Any Place: 6 Seniors Arrested for Public Sex

Senior couple planning the retirement together

As Janet Jackson famously declared back in 1993, “Any Time, Any Place.”

Those lyrics, ringing true for a group seniors who were caught having sex in a wooded conservation area earlier this month.

The Grace Richardson conservation area in Fairfield, CT was apparently being advertised online as an area for people to meet and have sex.

Police caught wind of this and began surveilling the space. That’s when they caught the elderlies bumping uglies.

Six people, five men and one woman, between the ages of 62 and 85 were arrested. Authorities charged all of them with breach of peace and two of them with public indecency. They were released from jail after promising to appear in court.

Several other locations are listed on the “City Hookup Guide” site. Police are monitoring them as well.

This is probably the next time we’ll next see Meghan Markle in public

The Duchess of Sussex is currently on maternity leave

Meghan Markle is currently taking a break from royal duties, having just given birth to her first child with Prince Harry.

Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor arrived on the 6th of May, making his first public appearance to the world two days later in an official photocall (and of course, he’s adorable).

The Duchess of  Sussex is currently on maternity leave, but may be out and about in public sooner than you might think.

As one of the most important royal events of the year, it’s thought that Meghan may make an appearance for the Queen’s birthday at Trooping the Colour, which will be held this year on the 8th of June.

Last year was Meghan Markle’s first Trooping the Colour appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, shortly after the royal wedding.

It’s worth noting that Kate Middleton also attended Trooping the Colour last year and was, time-wise, in roughly the same position as Meghan, after giving birth to Prince Louis at the end of April. So, although nothing has been confirmed regarding the Duchess of Sussex’s attendance, she may well be there after all.

Stephen A. Smith’s Most Controversial Public Comments

Controversy sells—and oftentimes it pays—a lot. Stephen A. Smith, an ESPN sports journalist known for his provocative commentary, is a prime example. On Thursday, it was reported that Smith is on track to becoming the highest paid TV personality on the ESPN network. The 51-year-old syndicated talk show host has a current contract that is reportedly worth around $ 5 million per year until 2021. However, the co-star of ESPN’s wildly popular First Take could be offered a new deal worth anywhere from $ 8 million to $ 10 million per year.

According to The New York Post, ESPN is willing to double Smith’s salary in order to avoid losing him to a competitor. Smith, who has been with the network since 2005, is arguably one of the most recognizable faces at ESPN and in the sports media industry at large. However, in addition to his catchphrases, the TV personality is known for his outspoken opinions and polarizing remarks, which are often criticized as sexist and crude.

Here’s a look back at some of Stephen A. Smith’s most flagrant public statements.

To Domestic Abuse Victims: Don’t “Provoke” Violence

Back in 2014, ESPN suspended Smith after he insinuated that victims of domestic violence are actually to blame for the abuse they’re subjected to. During a conversation about NFL player Ray Rice’s notorious attack against his wife, who he knocked unconscious in an elevator, Smith advised women not to “provoke” their attacker.

“What I’ve tried to employ [with] the female members of my family—some of who you all met and talked to and what have you—is that … let’s make sure we don’t do anything to provoke wrong actions, because if I come—or somebody else comes, whether it’s law enforcement officials, your brother or the fellas that you know—if we come after somebody has put their hands on you, it doesn’t negate the fact that they already put their hands on you,” he said on First Take.

Smith later apologized for his remarks, calling his comments “the most egregious error of my career.” He added, “My words came across that it is somehow a woman’s fault. This was not my intent. It is not what I was trying to say.”

On Mayweather’s Domestic Battery History: “Men Ain’t Wrong Always”

In 2010, Smith had trouble believing that boxing champ Floyd Mayweather, who has a documented history of domestic abuse arrests and citations, beat up his ex-wife, Josie Harris, who was hospitalized with a concussion. He also accused Harris of fabricating the story in order to extort money from the wealthy boxer. In an exchange on Twitter, Smith publicly defended Mayweather and stereotyped women who accused him of abuse as gold diggers.

To Ayesha Curry: Be A Good NBA Wife

Smith was accused of mansplaining appropriate behavior of an “NBA wife” to Ayesha Curry, who is married to Golden State Warriors player Steph Curry, when she accused the league of rigging a game against her husband. The incident occurred when Steph earned his first ejection in 2016 and Ayesha expressed her frustration on Twitter. “I’ve lost all respect sorry this is absolutely rigged for money,” she tweeted. “Or ratings in not sure which. I won’t be silent. Just saw it live sry.”

In response, Smith chastised Ayesha and suggested that she use LeBron James’ wife as a model for good behavior. “You are the wife of Steph Curry,” he said on his show. “What you do is a reflection on him. What you do is a reflection on the organization he works for. You have to be mindful of that. You can’t get caught up in your own individual emotions and having this zest to speak out to the point where it compromises your husband.”

Smith then compared her to Gloria James, saying, “She’s wonderful inside and out. She sits there, she doesn’t bring any attention to herself. She never tweets and goes out there and calls out the league and stuff like that. And nobody—NOBODY—is more scrutinized than her husband. But yet she thinks about how she represents him and she doesn’t do that.”

On Kobe Bryant: “N-gga, Please”

In 2012, Smith was heard using the N-word on First Take while discussing the upcoming NBA season and then-Lakers star Kobe Bryant’s foot injury. The word slipped out during an exchange with NBA star Dahntay Jones, who was appearing on the show as a guest.

“You think Kobe Bryant is going to miss it because his foot is sprained? Ni—a, please,” Smith declared.

Following the incident, Smith denied use of the racial slur, arguing that his words were “misconstrued” because “he’s a New Yorker” who talks fast.

TO KAEPERNICK: ‘STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM ME’

At the 2017 Black Enterprise Black Men XCEL Summit, Smith blasted Colin Kaepernick for refusing to vote in the 2016 presidential election. Although Smith supports his #TakeAKnee protest movement, he said that Kaepernick’s decision not to participate in the pivotal election was ignorant.

“My only issue with Colin Kaepernick is when he announced to the world that he’s not one to vote. If you are black and you don’t believe that it’s important to vote, just do me a favor and stay the hell away from me….don’t talk to me, don’t look at me, I’m not interested in hearing that level of ignorance,” said the sports analyst. “Because it is ignorant. Because outside of money, the No. 1 instrument of change in our nation is the power to vote. And if you don’t exercise it, you’ve disrespected yourself, you’ve disrespected our ancestors, and you’ve disrespected our history and I have no respect for you.”

Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle apparently have an ‘agreement’ to get along in public

Here’s what we know…

Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle have fallen victim to the rumour mill this year.

The two millennial Duchesses, both 37, have endured an endless stream of online bullying since becoming royals, particularly around the continuous speculation of a feud between the two women, something that according to sources has been blown way out of proportion.

It has since emerged that the royal feud actually had more to do with Prince William and Harry, rather than their wives, but according to royal expert Katie Nicholl, there is still tension between the two Duchesses, something they are keen to iron out.

REX

‘I do think there is some truth to there having been some tension — not just between the duchesses but between the dukes as well,’ Nicholl explained to Glamour. ‘As we all know, things can gather momentum pretty quickly. So while I think there’s been tension, I don’t believe there has been some feud.’

She continued: ‘I do know that Meghan and Kate have come to an agreement to get along, to make an effort, to be amiable and warm toward each other in public. They both realise it’s in neither of their interests to have these catfight headlines. It’s not what either of them want.’

REX

Last month, the two royal women shared a sweet public hug at Commonwealth Day, something that sources have explained wasn’t spontaneous, with Kate reportedly knowing that the cameras would be watching, wanting to send a positive message to the world before Meghan’s maternity leave.

‘They might not have a huge amount in common, but Kate has no issue with Meghan,’ a source told Vanity Fair. ‘She wants them to get along, not just for Harry’s sake but because two royal sisters-in-law at loggerheads wouldn’t be good, and Kate knows that. For Kate, it’s about keeping their relationship professional and putting on a show of togetherness.’

Well, thank goodness for that.

Trey Gowdy, Who Led 11-Hour Benghazi Hearing, Declares Public Congressional Hearings ‘Utterly Useless’

Former Rep. Trey Gowdy, the man who led an 11-hour public congressional hearing on the Benghazi consulate attack, said Monday that he believes such hearings are “utterly useless”—now that they’re used to investigate President Trump’s inner circle.

Gowdy, now a Fox News contributor, joined Fox & Friends to weigh in on last week’s House Oversight Committee hearing involving former Trump “fixer” and personal attorney Michael Cohen.

“What we learned this past week is how utterly useless public congressional hearings are,” the South Carolina Republican said. “I think two closed-door sessions this past week on the Senate and House side with the intelligence committees were very helpful. That is why they’re bringing Cohen back.”

Personal Money Snapshot: An Administrator in Public Higher Education and Former Lawyer Shares Her Money Snapshot!

Eeek – we are thrilled to present our very first personal money snapshot! By way of background: we got a few requests from readers to launch our own “money diary” series, so we asked willing readers to fill out a form with lots of details about debt, spending, saving and more!  If you’d like to fill out the form and be considered for a future personal money snapshot, please click here if you’d like to see the form and/or submit responses! You can also see a PDF of the questions if you want to review them ahead of time.

Today’s snapshot features reader P, who notes: “I have worked almost exclusively in public administration or higher education, so not a high roller here! Husband had a job loss early in career (about five years ago) that screwed us up.”

Please remember that this is is a real person who has feelings and isn’t gaining anything from this, unlike your usual friendly (soul-deadened, thick-skinned, cold-hearted, money-grubbing) blogger — so please be kind with any comments. Thank you! — Kat

Name: P
Location: Chapel Hill, NC
Age: 32
Occupation: lawyer –> public higher ed administrator
Income: $ 83,000
Household income: $ 165,000
Partner’s age: 34 (husband)
Household net worth:
 About $ 100,000
Net worth when started working: $ 26,000 (age 24)
Current debt: $ 15,000 credit card debt, $ 2,000 student loans
Living situation: Currently renting; rent is $ 1,400/month. (I do not contribute to rent.)

Debt

What does your debt picture look like?
Aggressively paying down $ 15,000 in consumer debt (credit card) accrued due to a job loss, a period of underemployment after a relocation to a much lower cost of living area (from D.C. to Chapel Hill), and shopping like an idiot. I have about $ 2,000 left on my student loans, which was only $ 10,000 to start.

How much money are you spending each month to pay down debt?
$ 2,000

How did you pay for school?
I made educational choices that left me with as little debt as possible (full scholarships to both undergrad and law school, albeit to lower ranked, less challenging institutions than I could have succeeded in). I always had two jobs during school (except for during 1L). Parents generously paid my rent and let me drive a family car.

What is your living situation?
We rent because we moved here with very little in savings and have lower-paying jobs. We sold our home to move to D.C., which subsequently ate our money ($ 2,500/month in rent for a 1-bedroom in Maryland), and now we rent for both money reasons and for flexibility reasons. We are planning to purchase again in 2019, thankfully, as we build savings and have a better grasp on what we want from our home.

Have you ever done anything noteworthy to avoid or lessen debt?
We had to cash out a small retirement account when my husband lost his job in 2013. We used it as a stopgap for some major things, but ultimately he re-invested about $ 4,000 of that.

Savings, Investments & Retirement

How much do you save for retirement?
I invest about 15–20% of my gross pay each month (target date retirement funds), with some of that as an employer match. Higher ed has its minimal benefits for things like matching!

How much do you have in retirement savings?
$ 70,000 (just mine)

How much do you save outside of retirement accounts?
We fund an emergency account for about $ 400/month, a down payment account at about $ 1000–$ 1500/month, and a vacation fund at $ 100/month. Buying a house is first priority, and a not-sucky retirement is the other. We are childfree and find that impacts some of our decisions with relationship to both the house and retirement.

What’s the #1 thing you’re doing to save money, limit spending, or live frugally?
We just don’t buy a lot of stuff, clothes, disposable things. We’re relatively minimal with our “stuff” consumption. And we bring lunches!

How much do you have in cash that’s available today?
Twenty bucks? Idk, I’m a millennial.

How much do you have in cash that’s available in a week, such as with an online savings account?
$ 20,000, all of my banking is online, no brick and mortar (includes $ 7,000 emergency fund).

Spending

How much do you spend on the following categories on a monthly basis?

Groceries: $ 600
Restaurants, bars, takeout, and delivery:
$ 400
Clothing and accessories: Less than $ 100
Transportation: Household spends about $ 330 (gas plus car payments, two cars)
Rent/living expenses: $ 1,400
Entertainment: $ 25, Hulu and Netflix only
Health care: $ 50/month each for two individual plans; no kids

What’s your spending range for these things? What’s your average?

Vacations – Range: $ 50–$ 7,000
Vacation – Average: $ 2,500

Individual items of clothing – Range: $ 10–70
Individual items of clothing – Average: $ 40

Apartment or house – Range: $ 1,000–$ 2,600
Apartment or house – Current main residence: $ 1,400 (rent)

Car or other vehicle – Range: $ 8,000–$ 10,000, always buy used, hate cars
Car or other vehicle – Last purchase / current main vehicle: $ 10,000, used vehicle

When was your wedding and how much did it cost?
2010, $ 30,000 total (parents paid), $ 250 for my wedding ring, about $ 300 for bridesmaids’ gifts, $ 250 for husband’s gift. Was married at 24 to my high school sweetheart (still am!). Tradition in my family is parents pay; it is “their party in our honor,” and the guest list was big (175+) due to very large families. Did not get married in a church. Married by judge I interned for, on lawn of beach club in New England. No honeymoon, as we had just started jobs.

Are there any other large expenses in your life, now or previously?
Husband doesn’t do the taxes anymore… didn’t know how to calculate “income” for IRS purposes so we had a $ 6,000 tax bill one year. Ugh.

Money Strategy

Do you have a general money strategy?
Make as much as you can while still having a life and being happy; spend it on the experiences and food you really want.

B. Smith’s Husband Slammed For Public Relationship With Girlfriend

Fans of famed restaurateur and lifestyle guru B. Smith are lashing out at her husband after he and his blonde girlfriend appeared in a Washington Post profile.

Dan Gasby, 64, opened up about his relationship with the other woman; as he cares for Smith, 69, amid her ongoing battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Gasby first went public with his romance with Alex Lerner, 53, back in December, in a post on the Facebook page he shares with his wife. He and Smith have been married to for 26 years.

“If This is Us and Modern Family came together, it would be us,” Gasby told The Post about his relationship with Lerner.

According to the report, the two met in the summer of 2017 and remained friends initially, as the divorced mother of three told The Post that she had socialized with Smith previously at charity events and “didn’t want to go out with a married man.”

But while having breakfast with Gasby and Smith one morning, Lerner realized, “This is not a man cheating on his wife.”

“What I admire about him is that he takes care of her,” she explained to The Post.

Lerner has also taken on a caregiver role. She has a room in Gasby and Smith’s East Hampton home, where she stays when she visits from her Manhattan apartment, the report states.

“If I can be compassionate to her … if I can do anything for her, it makes me feel good,” she told The Post, her voice “breaking,” according to the outlet. “If it is giving her something to drink, or making her something to eat — she loves to eat — I feel good.”

Smith was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s six years ago. Gasby previously told PEOPLE that taking care of her was 24/7 job.

“It’s the toughest thing I’ve ever dealt with,” he said. “Anybody who is an Alzheimer’s care giver knows exactly what other caregivers are going through. It’s 24/7. The complexity and the intensity of it is very tough.”

Caring for Smith “is overwhelming most of the time,” Gasby admitted to PEOPLE. “I’m taking it one day at a time,” he said. “It’s extremely difficult. At times I feel like I am between the Titanic and the iceberg and the water is cold and it makes a difference which one I get on.”

Meanwhile, critics of Gasby and Lerner’s relationship are not here for him embarrassing his wife, and many have noted online that: “You don’t bring your mistress in the house where your WIFE lives,” wrote one commenter, according to The Post. “She’s not dead.”

One twitter user said: “My nigga what happened to “in sickness and in health & how TF can you be Boo’d up with a man with his ill wife in the next room? Bitch!”

Another wrote: “The audacity of this muthaf*cka to bring this woman up in his wife’s house”

On Facebook, Monday, Gasby responded to his critics.

“The idiots and ignorant people calling for my arrest and saying B is or has ever been abused — I only wish someone in your immediate family has Alzheimer’s so you can see feel and experience the pain of millions of people across this country so you can know first hand what it’s like to care 24/7/365 for someone who can no longer care for themselves!” he wrote.

“I love my wife but I can’t let her take away my life!” he added. “5-10 years from now when many of you who will have an almost predestined meeting with Alzheimer’s because of genetics, obesity, and a myriad of inflammatory diseases, you’ll be wishing for someone to share moments with and ease the pain of loneliness and despair.”

He continued. “The clock is ticking. I know I can and have [managed] this, but can you do it too?”

Scroll up and watch the Twitter embed clip above and let us know if you agree with Loni Love’s take on the issue.

Also, here’s what the ladies of “The View” had to said about it…watch below:

Do you think Gasby is dead wrong or just trying to make the best of a bad situation?

T.I. Pleads No Contest To Violating Ban On Public Cursing

(AP Photo)

ATLANTA (AP) — Rapper T.I. is paying a $ 300 fine after pleading no contest to violating a local law in Georgia that prohibits public cursing.

The charge against the performer stems from a May incident at the gated community where he lives in the Atlanta suburb of Stockbridge.

His spokesman, Steve Sadow, tells the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that T.I., whose real name is Clifford Harris Jr., maintains his innocence but entered a plea “to put this matter to bed.”

Henry County Deputy Police Chief Mike Ireland said at the time that T.I. lost his key and the guard wouldn’t let him into the neighborhood. A police report says the entertainer eventually was allowed inside but walked back to the guard, demanding his supervisor’s name. Police were called. T.I. was arrested and released on bond.

Kaiser Permanente Hawaii Awards $164,000 in Grant Funding to Improve Public Health

HONOLULU — Kaiser Permanente has awarded $ 164,000 in community benefit grant funding to community health initiatives in Hawaii. The grant recipients are working to improve public health with a focus on serving low-income and vulnerable populations.

“At Kaiser Permanente of Hawaii, we’re committed to building healthier communities across the state,” said Dave Underriner, president of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals of Hawaii. “We’re proud to support organizations and initiatives working toward the same goal to improve public health and access to care for everyone in our community.”

Hawaii Appleseed Center for Law and Economic Justice received $ 50,000 to further establish the Hawaii Budget and Policy Center, a valuable community resource that provides state poverty reports and analyzes budget and tax policies that address poverty and inequity in the state. The center will research and analyze key policy issues, with specific focus on policies that address health and well-being for low- and moderate-income households, in order to improve efforts by service providers, lawmakers and government officials. The center’s work has the potential to impact more than 150,000 Hawaii residents living in poverty.

Boys & Girls Club Hawaii received $ 40,000 to provide comprehensive mentoring and community programming to promote healthy eating and active lifestyles. Through the grant, Boys & Girls Club Hawaii will partner with organizations to provide learning and leadership opportunities through sports clinics and leagues, culinary arts programs and even business training to 400 at-risk youth on Oahu.

Hawaii Primary Care Association received $ 40,000 to improve access to mental and behavioral health services within community health centers. The majority of patients served by community health centers live below the federal poverty level and 14 percent are uninsured. The grant will help build capacity for community health centers to screen, provide interventions and offer referrals to treat substance abuse and other behavioral health issues, giving more than 11,000 patients a network of support and services.

Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center received $ 34,000 to expand its school-based health services program. The grant will support two school-based health centers at Waianae High School and Waianae Intermediate School, which provide acute care, immunizations, physical exams and basic medications such as antibiotics to a large population of Native Hawaiian students, regardless of insurance status. School-based health centers also increase access to behavioral health services, addressing a critical need for greater support for adolescents facing bullying, stress, violence, depression and suicidal thoughts. More than 3,800 adolescents living in Waianae are expected to benefit.

NEW PARENT ESSENTIAL UPDATE:

What is a Notary Public?

When creating a legal document, you may have read that you
need to get your document signed by a notary
public.
Without knowing who this person is or understanding how their
signature helps validate your legal document, this step can seem confusing,
possibly even pointless.

In this post, discover what notarization is and why you may
need to seek out a notary public when completing certain legal documents.

Notary Publics and Notarizing Documents

A notary public is
someone who has been appointed by the state to authenticate legal documents and
verify the identity of the document’s signer(s). Notaries can be individuals
such as lawyers or government officials.

Notarization (the process of getting your document signed by a notary public) helps prevent fraud by ensuring individuals authenticate their documents before they can be used. It can also help confirm that the signer intended to sign the document and wasn’t pressured into doing so (e.g. through undue influence, coercion or duress, etc.), similar to signing your document in front of a witness.

For instance, when signing a Prenuptial Agreement, it is very important that the signers signed out of their own free will, understood what they were signing was a contract, and signed with their correct legal names. Signing a prenup with a notary public can help prevent avoidable issues and assist in proving all the right steps were taken in the event that the document’s validity is questioned in the future.

Notary publics can also do a number of other tasks, such as:

  • Witness signatures
  • Certify copies of legal documents
  • Administer oaths or affirmations to individuals
(to verify the contents of documents are true)

For some documents, notarization is required (meaning,
without it, your document may be invalid or unusable).

For example, an Affidavit is a statement of facts provided under oath. It is generally used to verify something a person knows is true (like their identity) but in order to make this assertion, it needs to be sworn in front of a notary public (or someone else authorized to administer oaths).

In other words, without completing the crucial step of
swearing your document in front of a notary, an Affidavit is just a bunch of
text on a page that cannot be used in a court or by another entity.

Finding a Notary Public

Many jurisdictions have information about how to find a notary public online. Some states, such as California, even provide a notary public listing that you can sift through to find a notary near you.

Your local bank, city hall, or courthouse, as we discuss in our blog covering common questions about notaries and witnesses, may also be able to assist you with finding a notary if required.

Finalizing Your Legal Documents

Notary publics are needed in law as they help ensure your document is valid. Many legal documents require notarization during execution; however, even when notarization is not required, it is a recommended way to help prevent avoidable issues like fraud, duress, and more.

Meghan Markle Cradles Baby Bump as She Meets Members of the Public with Prince Harry in Auckland

The weather finally cleared up for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as they greeted fans in Auckland, New Zealand.

After a busy day that included dedicating an area of native bush to the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy, participating in “welly wanging” contest with local children and visiting a charity that supports children who have a parent in prison, the royal couple met members of the public.

As they interacted with fans, the royal parents-to-be received several gifts from the crowd including an All Blacks — the country’s football team — onesie, a tui bird soft toy and even a rain boot, or a Wellington as locals call the footwear, stuffed with roses.

Meghan, 37, stepped out in a beige Brandon Maxwell dress with matching Stuart Weitzman pumps and a beige Burberry Bishop trench coat.

The dress clung to her baby bump which she cradled as she walked along with Harry, 34,  by her side. For their meet and greet, the prince wore a navy suit with a white button-down shirt underneath.

The duo made sure to talk to as many royal fans as possible — especially the younger members of the crowd.

Meghan invited a little girl through the crowd control fence and was rewarded with a sweet stuffed toy of a native tui bird.

Harry was particularly enamored with a little baby and reached out and gave the child what appeared to be a little tickle.

“Walkabouts,” as the royal meet and greets are commonly referred to, have provided some of Meghan and Harry’s most candid moments of the royal tour. Shortly after arriving to New Zealand, Meghan comforted a sobbing teenage fan by holding her hands.

One young royal fan who was wearing a shirt that read “Girls Can Do Anything” caught Harry’s eye in Sydney — so much that he just had to call his wife over to meet her.

“We feel she looks a bit like you,” a person in the crowd is heard telling Meghan in a video posted by Harry Meghan Updates on Instagram.

The Duchess of Sussex replied, “I was literally about to say the same thing!”

Harry then took a fan’s phone to snap a photo of Meghan with her mini-me —  a rare move for the prince, who usually adheres to the royal protocol of no autographs or selfies.

Earlier in the day, the royal couple bonded with local children from the environmental education group, “Trees of Survival,” and joined the kids for a “welly wanging” contest.

The objective of the game was to throw a Wellington boot — which New Zealanders refer to as “Wellies” — as far as possible. (Wellingtons are equivalent to what Americans call rainboots, Bean Boots, or duck boots.)

The children cheered as Meghan showed off her strength and won the competition, throwing her red-and-white polka-dotted boot approximately a meter away from Harry’s blue boot. For the win, the Duchess was rewarded with a rainboot-shaped trophy.

Adding to the couple’s growing list of baby gifts, Meghan and Harry were also given a small pair of green and white boots for their newest family member.

Later on in the day, the Royals joined New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern in Auckland for a visit to Pillars, a charity that supports children who have a parent in prison by providing special mentoring programs.

Meghan and Harry already had a special connection to the charity: as a wedding present to the couple, the government of New Zealand gifted $ 5,000 to Pillars. During Tuesday’s visit, they met some of the children who directly benefited from the funding.

The royal couple started their whirlwind 16-day tour Down Under in Sydney, with a number of day trips to other areas of the country, and kicked off the 2018 Invictus Games before spending a few days in Fiji and Tonga.

They returned to Sydney for the end of the Invictus Games before heading to New Zealand to wrap their tour.

Meghan and Harry will wrap up their busy day at a reception hosted by the Prime Minister at the Auckland War Memorial Museum.

Prince Harry just made a very public speech about Meghan Markle and their baby

And it’s too much!

Ever since Prince Harry showed off his parenting skills, jokily scolding a little boy for pulling his wife’s hair and then catching two-year-old Emily Henson stealing his popcorn at last year’s Invictus Games, fans have been waiting for the 33-year-old Prince to become a father himself.

And now it seems the time is here.

Yes, after tying the knot in May, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced last week that they were expecting a baby, arriving in Spring 2019.

The news broke soon after the royal couple’s arrival in Australia for their royal tour, with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex reportedly telling the Queen, Prince Philip, Prince Charles, Prince William and Kate Middleton at Princess Eugenie’s wedding.

Following the official statement by Kensington Palace, the future parents have spoken out about their excitement.

‘Thank you for the welcome you have given Meghan and I over the last few days,’ Prince Harry announced in his speech at the Invictus Games opening ceremony. ‘I have been so proud to be able to introduce my wife to you and we have been so happy to be able to celebrate the personal joy of our newest addition with you all.

Unsurprisingly the comments have set the internet alight with excitement, and it’s not the first comments the couple have made about their future arrival, while on tour.

While visiting a family in Dubbo, New South Wales, Meghan is said to have opened up about her pregnancy with mother Emily Carroll, who has 13-month-old daughter Ruby.

‘Meghan told me that she’s feeling pretty good so far, which is great, and that she’s running on adrenalin,’ Emily explained. ‘She said they’re doing 76 engagements in 16 days, with maybe one rest in the middle.

Emily continued: ‘She’s made for this royal business, isn’t she? They’re both great with kids.’

‘We also genuinely couldn’t think of a better place to announce the, er, upcoming baby,’ Prince Harry said during a speech last week. ‘Whether it’s a boy or a girl. So thank you very, very much.’
