Meet Esther Duflo, the Second Woman Ever to Win the Nobel Prize in Economics

Nobel Prize in Economics’ 2019 winner Esther Duflo became the youngest (and second) woman to win the award on Monday, and says it is “incredibly humbling.”

Duflo, 46, who hails from MIT, won the prize along with her husband Abhijit Banerje of MIT and Harvard’s Michael Kremer for their work on an experimental approach to alleviate global poverty. The trio’s work explored the causes of poverty and did field experiments to determine how those in poverty respond to education, healthcare, agriculture and other programs. The trio received a 9 million Swedish kronor ($ 916,000) cash award as part of the prize. The professors’ work has primarily focused on Africa and India.

In comments made at a news conference following her win, Duflo, as only the second woman to win the prize since its inception in 1969 (the first woman to win the prize was Elinor Ostrom in 2009), said she wants to be an inspiration for women in her field.

“Showing that it is possible for a woman to succeed and be recognized for success I hope is going to inspire many, many other women to continue working and many other men to give them the respect that they deserve like every single human being,” she said.

Additionally, Duflo told nobelprize.org in a later phone interview that “the profession is starting to realize the climate and the way we treat each other is not conducive for having more women in the profession.” She added that, “it’s how people talk to each other and address each other in seminars, that we need to work on to ensure it’s more respectful and will be more acceptable for women to think they don’t have to play the games of shouting at each other.”

The MIT professor has long worked on challenges related to poverty, and previously won the John Bates Clark Medal in 2010. She was also the recipient of the MacArthur “genius” Fellowship in 2009, and was previously named to Fortune‘s 40 Under 40.

“It was incredibly humbling to tell you the truth,” Duflo said during the news conference of winning the Nobel prize. “I didn’t think it was possible to win the Nobel prize in economics before being significantly older than any of the three of us.”

Duflo and her fellow recipients wanted to approach the problem of poverty from a scientific angle, she said. “Often the poor are reduced to caricatures, and often even people that try to help them often do not actually understand what are the deep root of the problems that are addressing the poor,” Duflo said.

The team’s research has already made a big impact. As a result of some of their experiments, 5 million children in India have received remedial tutoring in schools, and some countries have introduced subsidies for preventative healthcare, according to a statement from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

Duflo says their research seeks to “unpack the the problems, one by one, and address them as rigorously and scientifically as possible.”

Patriots Drop Antonio Brown After Second Sexual Misconduct Accusation

(FOXBOROUGH, Mass.) — Antonio Brown was released by the Patriots on Friday after a second woman accused him of sexual misconduct. New England is the third team in seven months to tire of the off-field behavior that has overshadowed his accomplishments as one of the NFL’s most prolific receivers for a decade.

The defending Super Bowl champions announced the move in a statement emailed to reporters, three minutes after Brown posted on Twitter: “Thank you for the opportunity @Patriots #GoWinIt.”

Brown has been accused of rape in a lawsuit by a former trainer. He also faces allegations that he exposed himself to an artist he hired to paint a mural at his home. Brown has denied the accusations.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady both declined to comment on Brown during their scheduled media availability Friday. Belichick said during the morning that the team was looking into “some things,” then cut off his news conference when reporters continued to ask about Brown.

Asked if he expected Brown to play in Sunday’s game against the New York Jets, Belichick said, “He’s on the roster.” About five hours later, he wasn’t.

In the email attributed to “a Patriots spokesperson,” the team said: “We appreciate the hard work of many people over the past 11 days, but we feel that it is best to move in a different direction at this time.”

According to a story in Sports Illustrated, the painter “received a group text message that appeared to come from the same phone number Brown provided to her in 2017. The text chain, with four other phone numbers on it, included photos of her and her children, with the person she believes is Brown encouraging others in the group to investigate the woman. The texter accused the artist of fabricating her account of the 2017 incident for cash.”

Lawyers for the artist said in a statement that the league and the Patriots “took our client’s concerns seriously.”

“She wanted the threats and intimidation to stop and we hope that will be case,” said a statement emailed to reporters from attorneys Lisa Banks and Debra Katz. “The NFL has assured us that regardless of Antonio Brown’s roster status, it will continue to investigate all claims regarding his behavior.”

Earlier this week, Nike cut ties with the receiver, saying in an email, “Antonio Brown is not a Nike athlete.”

A four-time All-Pro who caught 837 passes over nine seasons with the Steelers, Brown wore out his welcome in Pittsburgh after he went missing for two days before the 2018 season finale. The Steelers traded him to Oakland, which signed him to a contract that would have paid him up to $ 50 million over the next three seasons. But he never played a game for the Raiders, quarreling with the coach and general manager until they, too, released him. The Patriots signed him only a few hours later, giving him a one-year deal that would have guaranteed him $ 9 million and paid him up to $ 15 million this season.

Brown’s teammates said Friday they are trying to concentrate on the game, and Brown appeared to be doing the same.

“He seems pretty focused to me,” receiver Julian Edelman said. “He’s a professional. You don’t get to be a player like him by tiddlywinking around.”

“Alcohol Was First And I Was Second.” Le’Andria Johnson Talks Alcoholism, Working With Iyanla And Her Newfound Sobriety

Byron Cage In Concert - Decatur, Georgia

Source: Paras Griffin / Getty

If you’ve ever heard Le’Andria Johnson sing anything, then you know her talent is undeniable. Yet, for the past few years it had been overshadowed by what we now know to be alcohol-influenced, profanity ladden rants about the gospel industry and the Black church. In order to address those issues, Johnson sat down with Iyanla Vanzant for her show “Iyanla Fix My Life,” this past March. We interviewed her recently to see what she took from the process of the show, rehab and what she’s enjoying about sobriety.

MadameNoire: The last time we saw you was on “Iyanla Fix My Life” and I just wanted to know what made you reach out to be on the show?

Le’Andria Johnson: Well I, personally didn’t reach out. Donald Lawrence reached out to Iyanla and my record label followed through with that. I didn’t have a clue that that was going on but I kind of respected the fact that they did that. I was like alright.

How did you feel the process went, with everything that happened?

I felt like the process, in the beginning, I didn’t know where she would be coming from, I didn’t know what kind of energy she would have. But I found out, she didn’t need any thing from me. She was just there to offer support. It kept me interested to see what’s next.

There were a lot of people in the gospel community who came through to show support for you, Erica Campbell, Kirk Franklin and you just mentioned Donald Lawrence. What did that feel like having those names and those friends lend you support in that way?

It was a great feeling. And that’s something that we don’t see a lot of or enough of in the church community. It’s very rare. Having the church community reach out and be a support system to those that are in need or going through. That was quite amazing to see that. It felt good.

At one point, I know you were thinking about walking away from the process. What was going through your mind at that time?

Well, you know she had me face my truth. And it’s one thing for you to know your truth and it’s another thing for someone to tell you your truth in front of your face with no shame, no fear. And that’s exactly what she did. She made me realize we call ourselves a lot of things everyday—who we think we are and this is what we stand for. But do you really hold up to that. She made me think about a lot things, being a woman. She said some things I didn’t like. So I was like—you know the word. I’m out. But she came back. She didn’t give up. She came back and said basically, trust the process. You cannot keep doing what you’ve been doing. You can’t get mad and leave. You’re going to have to face it this time. I listened to her. And something on the inside of me was like, ‘You know what, you’re going to have to trust this process.’ And I kept moving along.

Do you feel like alcohol impeded on your relationship with God?

I feel like alcohol impeded on my life other than just God, my family, my children, my career. Alcohol was first and I was second. So you can imagine what else that was a part of my life that was third, fourth, fifth and sixth. It was first priority.

I know you went to rehab afterward. Are you still in rehab and how was that for you?

I went to a 30-day rehab treatment and I completed those thirty days. And it’s amazing because it’s not only dealing with my drug of choice, it’s dealing with other triggers I’m aware of. It was very needed. And a lot of people in our community, unfortunately, don’t seek getting help a lot. It allowed me to see my condition from a different perspective and everybody else’s condition from a different perspective as well.

Was there anything you were shocked to learn in rehab? Did you have any revelations?

The revelation was that I was heavily, heavily, heavily dependent on a bottle. And what I thought was filling a void was not even filling a void, it was just making the situation worse. The blind leading the blind. I was losing myself very, very fast. I was going down a dark road. I was going down the wrong path health wise and I can’t believe. Now, I can’t believe I was in that state of mind. It might be hard for people to understand that but I sit here and I’m in amazement when I go back and I look at different home videos and I’m like, ‘Wow, how did I get here?’ But that was my reality. That was my wake up call. That was you.

Iyanla said that you made some valid points about your thoughts on the church. And I think anybody who has been in the church community and is awake and paying attention can realize that you did make some valid points about the Black church community. So I’m wondering how you feel about the gospel industry and church at this point in your life?

I have to realize that a lot of what’s going on is taught from our forefathers. It really takes a strong person to be able to get out of a in some churches a demanding situation. It takes a really, really strong person. With Jesus, we learned from him because he was just like us. And I grew up in the church and I dealt with this all of my life. And I just got fed up. A lot of people say the same things I said but they don’t have a platform to be able to speak to a larger audience. I happen to have a name. Even though I was not trying to purposely do it—but I guess when you put something on a live— but I’m very cautious now about where I go, certain gigs I take. I’m very cautious to say yes. Because I know that there are some things that I still have to deal with. But in all fairness, I try to smile more than really give my opinion. I’m learning that there is a way. I was drinking. I was angry about the death of my brother. So I discombobulated. So that particular time was not the best time to vent. But now, I’ll be able to speak from a clear head, a clear mind. So that it can be relatable. I still feel the same way but in this particular case, it would be a little less harsh—as Iyanla said, ‘Less venom.’ And they’ll be able to hear me now and hear the message as opposed to the other side.

You spoke about being selective about the gigs you take. And when people talk about alcoholism or addiction, you have to be more mindful about the places that you go or the people that you hang around because they can be triggers that send you back into that spiral. So I’m wondering if there are any life changes that you’ve made to ensure that you don’t resort back to drinking or going back to other unhealthy coping mechanisms?

Well, I have to understand that—I have to tell myself this. This is just the truth. I cannot live my life based on what’s going to cause me to drink or not. At this point in my life, I’m going to have to say no to the bottle, period. Whether I’m angry, whether I’m happy, whether I’m sad, it’s just a choice, a choice for me not to drink at this moment. So if I have any temptation or if I get angry or there’s a death, I have to ask myself ‘What is this going to benefit? What am I going to gain from picking this bottle up?’ And that’s what the AA classes are for, that’s what the treatment is for. Even if I did pick the bottle up and now I’m able to manage it, it still doesn’t negate the fact that trials and tribulations are going to come. So my focus is, trying to become one with myself and realize not only how can I do this without drinking but how can I do this, period. How can I continue in a positive aspect, period.

What’s coming up next?

Well I’ve been thinking about stripping. I’m just playing. I’m thinking about writing some books and working on another album, probably another tv show and touring. You know the tour with Iyanla is very interesting and amazing. I would love to work with Fantasia. We’ve been talking a little bit about working together. So that would be amazing. So just staying busy and enjoying my sobriety. It’s been pretty interesting but it’s good.

Well, talk to me about that what are some things you’re able to enjoy now that you’re sober?

Oh wow! Time with myself. I’m able to say no now without any hesitation. For the life of me, I’m still trying to figure out how did I let certain things happen? How did I let that be a part of my life? My kids. My kids they have a joke now, “They say Mommy, we like this you. Yes we do but it’s like we can’t get away with anything anymore. When you was drinking and you went to sleep, we could ask you for anything and you’d say yeah. But now, you wake up and you say, ‘No, what do you want? What do you want that for? Where are you getting ready to go? Get back in there.’ You’re on point. And I’m like, ‘Uhh got dog what was I doing?’ But that is so funny to me. It’s really so funny. And then watching my kids’ reactions to a lot of things. They know it’s been seven months for mommy but every now and then, they’ll look out the corner of their eyes to see what I’m going to order, see what kind of drink I’m going to get. It be funny to me though. I told y’all I’m seven months, that’s not enough? And they’re like, ‘You know mom, you know it is. But we don’t want you to you know…” That’s so interesting for me to see. And it also lets me know how much of an effect I had on them when I was drinking.

With ‘MIB: International,’ Lexus Is Cast as a Blockbuster Car for a Second Straight Summer

When moviegoers first saw King T’Challa in action as Black Panther it was a real showstopper: The Marvel comic book character clings to the top of a sleek new Lexus LC sports coupe as he surfs through the busy streets of Busan, South Korea, in a high-speed chase that ultimately destroys his remote-controlled ride.

The scene’s a crowdpleaser, to be sure–and it successfully sells Lexus’ image as a maker of high-performance luxury sports cars to a younger audience. Starting this weekend, with a prominent role in Sony’s sci-fi franchise Men in Black: International, the Japanese automotive company hopes to add another hit to its credits, giving it supporting roles in summer blockbusters for two years running.

But betting on a movie’s success is a game that most veteran studio executives have a hard time playing, let alone luxury automotive brands. And no matter how much money is sunk into a project, there are no guarantees at the box office.

For instance, Black Panther could have been a big miss for the Japanese luxury automaker. The titular main character, who rules a fictional technologically advanced African nation, was relatively unknown to most audiences prior to the movie’s release. Lexus executives weren’t allowed to read the script before signing on to support the film, giving the company no guarantee of how its brand would appear on screen. The production also wanted six coupes to use for filming, which forced Lexus to provide custom-built prototypes that can cost upwards of $ 1 million each, since the actual car was not being produced.

For Lexus, whose corporate parent Toyota isn’t known for risk taking, the gamble paid off. Black Panther blew away expectations to become 2018’s highest-grossing movie in the U.S., earning more than $ 700 million domestically, and nearly $ 1.4 billion worldwide. And the film didn’t just appeal to comic book fans, it also over-indexed with African-Americans, given that Black Panther was the first big-budget Marvel Studio’s movie to feature a black actor as the lead.

“Lexus has always been committed to celebrating the rich diversity of our customers, but Black Panther catapulted it to a new level,” says Lisa Materazzo, Lexus’ vice president of marketing.

Betting on blockbusters

With Men in Black: International, Lexus is taking less of a risk. Sony has put considerable resources into breathing new life into its $ 2 billion franchise, which now stars Chris Hemsworth (Marvel’s hammer-wielding Thor) and Tessa Thompson, who proved a winning duo together in Thor: Ragnarok.

In the new MIB film, Lexus’ aggressive RC F sports coupe races through London, helping agents escape threatening aliens, before transforming into a jet. Lexus’ RX Hybrid and LX SUVs are also featured in scenes with alien encounters.

In both MIB and Panther, Lexus is portrayed as a future-forward designer of high-tech vehicles, a positioning that promotes the company’s newest slogan “Experience Amazing.” “The beauty of film integrations is that none of the traditional rules apply,” Materazzo says. “It’s an opportunity to partner with filmmakers to imagine all of the possibilities.”

This isn’t necessarily new ground for Lexus, which has introduced other high-tech products like a hoverboard and sports yacht concept over the past several years to expand the brand’s appeal to affluent buyers in the sought-after 45- to 55-year-old market.

Lexus is looking to use films as a way to launch new emotionally engaging campaigns around the release of its new sports cars and luxury sedans and SUVs. It especially sees movies as a way to tap into conversations around cultural events.

But forcing your brand into the story doesn’t come cheap. In addition to providing expensive prototypes to filmmakers for Panther, Lexus produced a comic book and custom videos. It also bought a 30-second Super Bowl spot for the tie-in and LC 500 launch that cost the company more than $ 5 million.

But when Marvel’s movies have made a combined $ 21 billion worldwide to date (including the most recent Avengers installment), you take the risk.

A strategy as old as Bond, James Bond

If Lexus seems like it’s siding up to well-dressed secret agents, there’s a reason: The brand is focused on pushing the performance of its cars, technological innovation and style–while having some fun. That kind of limits just who gets to drive its hero cars.

“We consider how our product aligns with the character who drives it,” Materazzo says, and “how the integration might enable us to illuminate a core brand truth within the story.”

The automaker wasn’t specifically looking to get into the superhero business, though Black Panther was expected to be groundbreaking in bringing the character to the big screen, with Chadwick Boseman as the first black actor to headline a big-budget superhero film (which also featured a largely African-American cast).

So putting Black Panther in a LS 500 luxury sedan and LC 500 sport coupe in the film and marketing materials was akin to pairing James Bond with Aston Martin.

But moviegoers haven’t always embraced the films Lexus has supported with product placement. In 2017, the same year “Experience Amazing” launched, Lexus developed the designs for a futuristic jet for Luc Besson’s pricey sci-fi fantasy Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, which didn’t take off, earning just $ 226 million worldwide.

On the other hand, when the films do work, they clearly have helped improve Lexus’ brand image, and boost its sales. Lexus’s “Long Live the King” Super Bowl spot helped boost searches for its LS sedan by 2,500%, according to auto site Kelley Blue Book shortly after the ad launched. And online searches for Lexus rose 15% the week after Panther‘s debut, while the LC 500 was up 10% on its own, according to Autotrader.

Lexus recorded its best global sales year in 2018, moving 698,330 vehicles off dealership lots, an increase of 4.5%–a tough figure for anyone to reach, in what’s becoming a crowded luxury auto market.

“Auto companies partnering on movies is more about exposure than sales,” says Michelle Krebs, executive analyst at Autotrader. This is true especially of summer blockbusters that attract millions of moviegoers, she adds, noting that Nissan’s affiliation with the Star Wars films enabled it to have a themed auto show exhibit, “which surely drew lots of kids with their parents in tow to an exhibit they might otherwise have skipped.”

In addition to the Black Panther franchise–which Lexus isn’t expected to give up, though a sequel isn’t expected until 2021–the automaker will likely appear in future Marvel movies. Marvel Studios’ marketing mavens prefer long-term relationships with brands. For instance, Audi has been the vehicle of choice for Iron Man since 2008. Other Avengers films have also featured Acura.

But Lexus also has eyes on other franchises, as evidenced by its high-visibility role in MIB. The automaker says doesn’t have a “strict rule” for how many films it wants to rally around per year, “one high profile partnership per year (feels) about right,” Materazzo says. “We are actively considering several possibilities.”

Whether MIB tanks or soars, Lexus’ diversification is a smart strategy for Hollywood tentpole brand integrations. Because even without all of Black Panther‘s success, if the movie proved one thing it’s that you can’t stay in Wakanda forever.

In Pose‘s Breathtaking Second Season, the Category Is Righteous Fury

What a difference three years makes. The first season of FX’s New York City ballroom drama Pose began in 1987—the same year that Paris Is Burning, director Jennie Livingston’s influential documentary about the scene, opens. At that time, ball culture was still a mostly underground phenomenon. Though gay men and trans women of color had been forming chosen families known as houses to compete in elaborate drag and voguing competitions since the early ’70s, it took the attention of white outsiders like Livingston (a consulting producer of Pose) and particularly Madonna to bring this wildly inventive art form into the mainstream. Both Madonna’s “Vogue” and Paris debuted in 1990, changing the ballroom scene forever. It’s in that heady moment that creators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Steven Canals choose to revisit the fictional House of Evangelista and their rivals for the show’s dazzling, crushing and intentionally infuriating second season, which debuts June 11.

Though the backdrop is a pop hit that makes voguing—and practitioners like dance prodigy Damon (Ryan Jamaal Swain)—trendy downtown while fueling the community’s fantasies of stardom, the characters’ lives outside the ballroom are strikingly unglamorous. The explosive season premiere opens with saintly Evangelista mom Blanca (Mj Rodriguez) and O.G. emcee Pray Tell (Billy Porter, who deserves an Emmy for his stirring performance in the new episodes) on a boat to Hart Island, the bleak final resting place of unclaimed bodies and city residents too poor to afford a proper burial. “I’ve been to three funerals this week,” Pray seethes. “Where’s the cure?” As they search the island for the mass grave where his ex Keenan is interred, he and Blanca find a makeshift memorial to the many AIDS patients buried on the island. Both HIV-positive and financially insecure, the pair is clearly haunted by the possibility of spending eternity in such a miserable place.

In fact, even as she pins her hopes for the house on ballroom’s breakthrough, Blanca sinks deeper into denial about her declining health. Even her pal Judy, a quippy lesbian nurse (the great Sandra Bernhard, perfectly cast in a new role), has trouble convincing her to take free AZT pills bequeathed by wealthy white AIDS patients. Blanca keeps her spirits up with optimism about Damon’s new gig teaching outsiders to vogue, beautiful Angel’s (Indya Moore, who gives the season’s other standout performance) nascent modeling career and her own future in the nail-art business. Yet a meeting of ACT UP, the tenacious group of AIDS activists that had just been founded in 1987, gives Pray Tell an outlet for his righteous anger. At his insistence, the House of Evangelista—with the notable exception of imperious grandma Elektra (Dominique Jackson)—turns out for a die-in at a Catholic church that echoes the real group’s famous “Stop the Church” action.

What’s remarkable is how much Pose manages to accomplish simultaneously—and without sacrificing the specificity of each character’s personality, relationships or aspirations. The die-in doesn’t just reenact a moment of desperate bravery in the LGBT community; as directed by FX stalwart Gwyneth Horder-Payton, it places trans women of color on the front lines of a movement they’d helped lead since Stonewall, but that has often erased them from the official history. In a storyline that wisely drops the straight, white characters of season 1 (played by Kate Mara, James Van Der Beek and Evan Peters, all TV stars outshined by their fresh-faced cast mates) to further foreground Blanca, Angel, Pray Tell and Elektra, season 2 illustrates how so many denizens of ball culture suffered and died as a blissfully ignorant mainstream co-opted their cool.

Pose is yet another mainstream representation of the scene. But it avoids replicating the gulf between Madonna’s depiction—which some have argued was exploitative—and the lived reality of its characters by staring deep into it. Even as she capitalizes on the fashion world’s vogue for voguing, Angel lives in fear of powerful people in the industry “clocking” her as trans. And if the show pulled some punches to get viewers hooked on early episodes, it isn’t shying away from painful truths anymore. Death suffuses season 2; funeral scenes are almost as common as ball sequences. Elektra, in an on-the-nose but still perfect development, takes a lucrative job as a dominatrix but still can’t entirely escape the perils of her identity. Blanca discovers that money isn’t the only thing standing in the way of her becoming a successful business owner. Surely in part because three of the four episodes provided to critics were written or co-written by writer-producers Janet Mock and Our Lady J, both trans women, the season is fueled by the steadfast solidarity and justified rage of marginalized characters who only have each other to rely on. “When the outside world tries to shut us down,” Elektra proclaims, “this army closes ranks.”

It’s a line that encapsulates both the show’s most hopeful theme and its constitutional lack of subtlety. Along with reams of praise, Pose has drawn some criticism for its stylized grandness, which early detractors argued put too much distance between the viewer and the characters. (I’d like to check back in with those critics midway through season 2, which on a few occasions left me bawling.) But realism isn’t the only path to realness. As transcendent new ball scenes that reference classic melodramas from Les Misérables to Romeo and Juliet suggest, it’s quite possible to feel empathy for outsize characters. So maybe it’s best to think of Pose as a serialized opera or musical, with ball showdowns taking the place of production numbers and veterans of the stage like Porter, Bernhard and Patti LuPone (who joins the cast in a small but wonderfully nasty role) contributing some of its most captivating performances. For producing such an extraordinary, uncompromising second season, everyone involved in the show deserves to take a bow.

We Broke Down Every Second of the New Avengers: Endgame Trailer

Warning: This post contains spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War.

Marvel Studios has dropped yet another trailer for Avengers: Endgame. This one definitively reveals that the Avengers will travel into space in order to try to fight Thanos again. The trailer also supports the fan theory that the Avengers will have to fight Thanos twice: once immediately after Thanos’ snap that cut all life in the universe in half, and again much later after the team regroups.

We still have many questions after watching the trailers. But here are our big takeaways below in the full breakdown of the new Avengers trailer.

Another Avengers: Endgame trailer dropped when tickets went on sale

Avengers: Endgame tickets are finally on sale for April 25, the Thursday night before the movie’s full release on April 26. AMC theaters is even hosting a 59-hour-long marathon of all 22 Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, ending with Avengers: Endgame (which is reportedly three hours long).

Marvel Studios celebrated the announcement with yet another trailer for the highly-anticipated sequel to Avengers: Infinity War. New footage showed the Avengers traveling to space to fight Thanos (Josh Brolin).

Thanos makes his first appearance in any of the Avengers: Endgame teasers

Marvel has been hiding Thanos from much of the promotional material for Avengers: Endgame, but the new trailer confirms that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will take the fight to Thanos. Last we saw him, he had successfully destroyed half of all life in the universe for environmental reasons using the Infinity Stones that he gathered in Avengers: Infinity War. At the end of that movie, Thanos was looking at an alien countryside from a small hut, celebrating his victory. But it’s still unclear where he is: whether it’s a reborn Titan or some other realm within his mind.

In the new Avengers trailer, the Avengers confront him on a planet that looks radically different from that peaceful oasis. But we don’t know how they find Thanos to fight him.

The Avengers may have to fight Thanos twice

Historically, studios restrict the use of footage in trailers for big movies like Avengers: Endgame. Our guess is most, if not all, of this footage is from the first half of the movie. It’s worth noting that the new, matching uniforms that the Avengers have sported in past trailers and in toy sets do not appear in this trailer. Fans have theorized that the Avengers will wear those uniforms — which look similar to the one that Michael Douglas’ Hank Pym wore in order to travel to the Quantum Realm to save his wife Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) in Ant-Man and the Wasp — to travel through the Quantum Realm themselves.

Now it seems like that Quantum Realm journey may not happen until the second act of the film. In this trailer, we see the remaining Avengers make an intergalactic journey, presumably to Titan where Thanos has settled after the snap. They will probably try to wrest the Infinity Gauntlet from Thanos there so that they can undo the snap using the Time Stone. Given Thanos’ immense power, the Avengers will probably lose and have to plot another way to fight the Mad Titan.

That second mission will probably involve time travel and the Quantum Realm. The first trailer for Avengers: Endgame showed Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) emerging from the Quantum Realm and showing up at the Avengers headquarters. But if you look closely at the security camera footage of Ant-Man trying to enter the Avengers’ compound, the date on the footage is from the 20th century. Likely, Scott Lang accidentally traveled back in time. Ant-Man and the Wasp also hinted that the Quantum Realm could allow for time travel.

If the Avengers cannot take the Infinity Gauntlet from Thanos, they might have to go back in time and make sure that Thanos never collected all the Infinity Stones in the first place. They will then probably fight Thanos again, this time on more even footing. Either way, they’re likely to bring back the fallen heroes in some way since many of the characters who disappeared will appear in confirmed, upcoming Marvel movies, like Spider-Man: Far From Home, Black Panther 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Captain America and Iron Man will reconcile

Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) left one another on bad terms at the end of Captain America: Civil War when Tony Stark discovered that Steve Rogers’ brainwashed buddy, Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), killed Tony’s parents. At the end of that movie, Steve sent Tony a flip phone by which to contact him in an emergency. Tony resisted using the phone in Avengers: Infinity War before flying into space to chase Thanos’ Children. Captain America stayed on earth and fought Thanos in Wakanda. The two never interacted during that movie.

We see the two men shake hands for the first time in this trailer. Tony asks Steve if he trusts him, and Steve says yes. It’s easier to put aside your differences when half of all life in the universe has been destroyed. It’s likely that one of the other Avengers like Thor (Chris Hemsworth) or Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) will facilitate this reunion.

The Avengers may have to choose between the living and the dead

A lot of the shots in this trailer contrast those who still have their loved ones — like Iron Man — with those who lost everything — like Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner). If you need it, here’s a refresher on who died and who survived in the last Avengers movie.

The advertising campaign for Endgame has long suggested that some or several of the Avengers will die in this movie: The contracts for at least three of the original Avengers team (Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Hemsworth) are up. They may perish or at least retire in this film.

Breaking down every second of the Avengers: Endgame trailer

0:02 This is the Avengers Headquarters in Upstate New York. We have seen in other trailers that the Avengers are regrouping here.

0:07 Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) says that if they “do this,” the Avengers will go in short-handed. “You mean because they killed all our friends?” James Rhodes (Don Cheadle) asks. This line sets the stakes for this movie: If the Avengers could not defeat Thanos with all their super-power, then how are they supposed to fight him with only half of the number of heroes?

Also, Rhodey says “they” killed all our friends, presumably referring to the Children of Thanos. But at this point Thanos’ henchman are all dead. It’s unclear if Thanos has any help (or needs any) in Avengers: Endgame.

Note that Bruce Banner and James Rhodes are wearing different shirts in this scene than they were wearing in the post-credits scene for Captain Marvel when the Avengers first meet Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) in Avengers Headquarters. That means they are planning to fight Thanos in two separate scenes (at least). The two separate scenes could support the theory that the Avengers will take on the Titan at the beginning of the movie and fail before hatching up another plan to defeat him.

0:16 Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and Nebula (Karen Gillan) grab hands. Remember: the Guardians and Nebula were not on the best of terms in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Nebula was set on her own vengeful mission against Thanos. But all the Guardians, save Rocket, perished in Thanos’ culling. Nebula is all Rocket has left.

0:17 Remember, the last time we saw Tony Stark in Avengers: Infinity War, he was stranded in space with Nebula. In the first trailer, for Avengers: Endgame it seemed like Tony might die in space, since he and Nebula were running out of food and oxygen.

This is likely a reunion between Tony Stark and his fiancée Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) after he returns to Earth. He says, “It’s not about how much we lost. It’s about how much we have left.” We know from the recently-released Avengers: Endgame posters that Pepper survived the culling. Tony is probably trying to convince the Avengers to value what they still have at this point and not fight Thanos again.

0:22 Tony then intones, “We’re the Avengers. We have to finish this.” Likely, while encouraging the remaining heroes to cherish what they still have, Tony still sees Thanos as some sort of threat and believes that the Avengers need to defeat him in order to keep the universe safe — regardless of whether they can turn back time. Here is Tony suiting up as Iron Man.

0:23 Clint Barton, a.k.a. Hawkeye, is sporting an entire arm sleeve of tattoos! He has really taken this whole culling hard.

The fact that the trailer contrasts the circumstances of Tony Stark and Clint Barton is important: Tony still has the woman he loves, Pepper. But Clint presumably lost his wife and children during Thanos’ culling. He has nothing — and nothing to lose.

0:26 Thor meets Carol Danvers. This scene already appeared in another trailer. But the two share somewhat similar powers and a preference for hanging out in space. They’ll probably get along.

0:27 This show is basically all the Avengers left, except for Captain Marvel and Thor. What are they looking at? It could be Carol Danvers or Thor rallying the troops, or possible some weapon or invention that may help them. Black Widow has long, red hair, which likely means that quite a bit of time has passed since the end of Avengers: Infinity War.

0:30 Iron Man and Captain America reconcile. “You trust me?” Tony asks. “I do,” Steve says. The two shake hands. They appear to be in New York City around some construction. Some die-hards have theorized the the Avengers will travel back in time to the Battle of New York, since several of the Infinity Stones were in and around New York City at that time (the Time Stone in the Sanctum Sanctorum, the Mind Stone in Loki’s Staff and the Space Stone in the Tesseract). Could the Avengers be visiting the site of that battle in modern times as Tony hatches a plan?

Directors Anthony and Joe Russo have intimated that they have altered some footage in the trailers in order to hide the real plot of the movie from fans. Given that admission, it’s possible some of these scenes aren’t what they seem. Fans are theorizing that this meeting between Tony and Steve is actually a meeting between 2018 Tony (having traveled back in time to the Battle of New York) and 2012 Steve Rogers (with a more modern suit that’s been altered for the trailer).

0:33 This looks like the Guardians of the Galaxy ship, the Benetar, the only spaceship that was left intact on Titan after the Avengers’ battle with Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. This could be Nebula and Tony launching away from the planet in their bid to make it back to earth. Or the Avengers could be re-using the ship later in the movie.

0:36 The Avengers head into space to fight Thanos. There’s an Intriguing combination of people here: Rocket and Captain America flying the ship together. Captain America (who as far as we know has not traveled to space), Black Widow, War Machine and Thor sit in the back. They don’t have on their special, matching uniforms yet, and Black Widow is sporting the short, blonde hair she had in Avengers: Infinity War, not the long, red hair she has in some shots in the Avengers: Endgame trailers. This is likely early in the movie when they try to fight Thanos the first time.

0:37 Peter Parker (Tom Holland) was the heart of the last film. He died in Tony’s arms. As Tony looks back on a picture of the kid here, Thanos says, “You could not live with your own failure.”

0:41 This is the same ship that Thanos used to overtake Thor’s ship in Thor: Ragnarok (and Avengers: Infinity War). Nebula and War Machine look out the window of their ship afterwards in fear. Thanos doesn’t need a ship to travel from planet-to-planet, as we saw in Infinity War. Could Thanos have more henchmen aboard this ship?

0:49 This is the first reappearance of Thanos in the Avengers: Endgame promotional materials. This shot is preceded by a series of shots of the Avengers looking very afraid. Thanos ends his quote: “You could not deal with your own failure. Where did that bring you? Back to me.” Thanos appears from blue streaks, which probably means he traveled to the planet using the Infinity Gauntlet, not a ship (hence the confusing shot above).

This entire sequence seems to support the theory that the Avengers try to fight Thanos early in the film when they’re still burning over the loss after the snap (hence Thanos in armor). Other trailers suggest a time jump happens later in the film, so they will likely take years to regroup.

0:50 Iron Man faces down Thanos in a shot that’s very similar to their fight in the last movie. This solo of Iron Man, plus the emphasis on his reunion with Pepper earlier in the teaser, spells out doom for this particular Avenger.

It’s unclear what planet this is on, though some fans have guessed that after the Avengers try to fight Thanos in space, Thanos teleports to earth and destroys Avengers Headquarters as a sort of warning to the superheroes to leave him alone. If that’s so, this could be Avengers Headquarters.

0:52 The original three Avengers — Iron Man, Captain America and Thor — all in a row. They approach Thanos, sitting down, as if exhausted by this whole process. This probably isn’t the time when they defeat Thanos, but it’s the first time the three heroes have presented a united front since Avengers: Age of Ultron.

These were the first three Marvel heroes to get solo movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. My guess is we’ll never see a solo movie from any of them again, at least not with these actors playing them.

Democrats Say Possible Howard Schultz Presidential Bid Could Help Trump Win Second Term

A number of top Democrats say President Donald Trump could win a second term if former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz runs for president.

Schultz said he is considering a bid for the 2020 presidential election as an independent during an interview that airs during this Sunday’s 60 minutes.

Democrat Juli?n Castro, who was the Obama administration’s secretary of Housing and Urban Development and recently announced his own bid for the race, spoke out against a possible Schultz run during an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper.

“I have a concern that if he did run, that essentially, it would provide Donald Trump with his best hope of getting re-elected,” Castro said on CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday.

Schultz, a Democrat himself, sees his possible run as a way to break from party-oriented politics, according to The Atlantic. He has already spent the past year hiring consultants, The Atlantic reports.

“We’re living at a most-fragile time,” Schultz told CBS’s Scott Pelley. “Not only the fact that this president is not qualified to be the president, but the fact that both parties are consistently not doing what’s necessary on behalf of the American people and are engaged, every single day, in revenge politics.”

Although 57% of American voters now disapprove of Trump’s job, Castro added that the President’s support is about 42% no matter which Democrat ultimately runs against him. If an independent party were to appeal to enough undecided voters, Trump could win the 2020 race.

Other Democrats that have spoken out against the prospect include former Obama senior adviser David Axelrod, Sen. Brian Schatz of Hawaii, and even the Democratic Party of Washington State, the HuffPost reports.

“I would suggest to Mr. Schultz to truly think about the negative impact that that might make,” Castro said.

Usher Moves To Finalize Second Divorce

They parted ways last year, but it’s only now that Usher Raymond and Grace Miguel have formally moved forward  to dissolve their 3 year marriage.

Specifically, according to court records,  Usher, 40, made the filing on Friday in a Georgia court. According The Blast, the entertainer is employing the same attorney he used for his previous custody fight with ex-wife, Tameka Foster.

Court documents point to  December 24, 2017 as the couple’s date of separation. They also say they reached a confidential settlement agreement … so it’s all finished and just waiting on a judge to sign off.

“After much thought and consideration we have mutually decided to separate as a couple.”

The statement continued …

“We remain deeply connected, loving friends who will continue supporting each other through the next phases of our lives. The enormous amount of love and respect that we have for each other will only increase as we move forward.”

Usher and Grace Miguel, 49,  originally met while working in the music industry, and she also served as his manager. The marriage produced no children.

In related news, a Philadelphia songwriter who claims he was cut out of profits and credit for his work on Usher’s “Bad Girl” has been awarded more than $ 44 million in damages in a lawsuit against the song’s other co-writers.

via Billboard:

A jury  awarded the sum to Daniel Marino. His former co-writer William Guice was ordered to pay $ 6.75 million in compensatory damages, and $ 20.25 million in punitive damages.

Also last week Destro Music Productions, owned by co-defendant Dante Barton, agreed to pay Marino $ 17.35 million. That brings his total award to $ 44.35 million.

The lawsuit stemmed from Marino’s work on a song called “Club Girl.” Marino says he created most of the song, including its guitar hook, tempo and chord progression.

The song was recorded by Usher in 2004 and renamed “Bad Girl.” And in case you’re wondering, Usher wasn’t named in the suit.

Why Your Credit Cards May Deserve A Second Chance

(AP Photo)

While paying off $ 1,700 in credit card debt in 2014, Jamie Griffin cut up his card. To tackle the remaining $ 90,000 in student loans he and his wife carried, he read personal finance experts’ tips and turned to cash and a spreadsheet to budget. Now that most of their debt is paid off, he’s giving credit cards a cautious second chance.

Griffin has come to see credit cards as a way that he and his wife, Jenna, who are both teachers, can potentially defray the costs of travel. Instead of immediately applying for a travel credit card, though, the 31-year-old from Duluth, Minnesota, let his wife’s longtime rewards credit card lead the way as they transitioned from using cash to credit for most purchases.

“We wanted to practice to make sure we could actually do it rather than reverting back to our old spending habits of just swiping a card because we could,” Jamie Griffin says. “We haven’t had to pay any interest. We haven’t had any late payments.”

If you, too, have developed new spending habits — and potentially higher credit scores — since paying off debt, you might be a good fit for rewards credit cards that earn cash back for your emergency fund or miles for a vacation. Here are factors to consider.

REWARDS CAN HELP WITH EXPENSES

Rewards credit cards generally require a credit score of 690 or higher. They can earn cash back, points or airline miles in specific categories or on everyday spending. Rewards rates vary by card and some also offer sign-up bonuses with introductory zero percent interest rates for new cardholders.

Depending on the card, rewards can be redeemed for things like cash, statement credit, travel, gift cards or merchandise — all of which can help with household expenses, as long as you pay credit card bills in full every month to avoid interest charges.

Since early 2017, the Griffins have collected 38,000 points — that’s over $ 300 in cash back. They redeemed 20,000 points (about $ 200) into their bank account earlier this summer.

YOUR CREDIT MAY DEPEND ON IT

Paying off debt is a worthy goal. But if you later stop using a credit card, it can hurt your credit scores. That’s because credit utilization and length of credit history are key factors in the calculation of those scores, according to FICO.

Say you were to close an older high-limit credit card after paying it off — or that you use the card so infrequently that the issuer ends up closing the account for you. Shutting down the account would not only decrease your amount of total available credit; you would also lose the card’s account history.

Another factor in your credit scores is credit mix — the combination of different kinds of credit accounts. A healthy credit mix might include a mortgage or car loans, for example, and also credit cards.

“If you have a healthy mix of credit, and you’re using them wisely, and you have a good history, that should reflect in your credit score,” says Jeffrey Arevalo, financial wellness expert at GreenPath, a credit counseling agency.

Of course, without piles of cash on hand, you’ll need good credit if you want to qualify for a home or car loan at the lowest interest rates. Keeping a credit card active and using it responsibly is an easy way to maintain good credit.

But if the temptation to overspend is too great, closing a credit card account may be the way to go, Arevalo says.

CREDIT CARDS CAN HELP YOU PLAN

Before moving most of their expenses to credit, Jenna Griffin asked the issuer about benefits for longtime customers. The couple secured a six-month safety net with a zero percent interest rate that they didn’t have to use.

Recently, the couple was approved for a credit card that earns miles to help them save money on travel expenses. Jamie Griffin continues tracking all of their expenses on his spreadsheet.

If you’re ready to give credit cards a second chance, here’s how to use a rewards credit card and maintain good credit:

– Pay your bill in full and on time every month.

– Don’t stray from your budget just to earn credit card rewards.

– Keep charges below 30% of your available credit.

– Use your credit card as a budgeting tool to track your spending and review your purchases.

– Keep your no-annual-fee accounts open and active to avoid hurting your credit score.
