‘It Doesn’t Get Any Bigger Than This!’ Jennifer Lopez and Shakira Will Headline the 2020 Super Bowl Halftime Show

Jennifer Lopez and Shakira will headline the Super Bowl halftime show next year—nabbing the coveted performance spot at the NFL championship game.

The pairing will mark the first time both Latina singers will perform together. The halftime show will kick off at Super Bowl LIV on Feb. 2, 2020 in Miami Gardens, Fla., the NFL said Thursday.

Lopez — who has recently garnered headlines for her lauded performance in Hustlers—and Shakira both tweeted the news. In a statement, Lopez said she had long dreamed of performing at the Super Bowl, and that the occasion would be even more special to her because she would be on stage with “a fellow Latina.”

“I can’t wait to show what us girls can do on the world’s biggest stage,” she said.

“It doesn’t get any bigger than this!” Shakira wrote on Twitter.

In a statement, Shakira noted the performance would fall on her birthday.

“I’m so honored to be taking on one of the world’s biggest stages in the company of a fellow female artist to represent Latinos and Latinas from the U.S. and all over the world—and to top it off, on my birthday!” she said. “This is a true American dream and we are going to bring the show of a lifetime!”

Why star center Raheem Anderson II’s college pick will be easier than his high school pick

Next year, when Detroit Cass Tech center Raheem Anderson II decides which college he wants to attend, making the announcement should be a snap.

It certainly couldn’t be any tougher than when he decided to enroll at Cass as a ninth grader. He had to break the news to his father, Raheem, who was a mainstay in the trenches for the late 80s football teams at arch-rival Detroit King.

“We had an agreement – I told him ‘If you keep your grades high, you could pick the school that you want to go to,” his father explained. “He got a 4.0, he shook my hand, he looked me in the eye, and said, ‘Dad, I want to go to Cass.’ It was rough (for me to hear), but it was like, I don’t want to micro-manage his life.

It turned out to be a fruitful move for the 6-foot-3, 298-pound Anderson, who’s received 19 scholarship offers – including one from Michigan, which seems to be where he’s leaning.

According to 247 Sports Composite, Anderson is the second-ranked center in the country among the class of 2021 and the No. 6 junior in the state.

“First of all, academics is the main thing on my list (influencing a decision),” said Anderson, who carries a 3.5 grade-point average and wants to major in electrical engineering. “I’m also looking at the stability of football coaches they have, and to see if the team is like a family.”

But there seems to be no rush on closing in on a decision.

“He’s enjoying the recruiting process right now; we just left from Syracuse, we’re going to another game at Notre Dame in a couple of weeks,” Anderson’s dad said. “It’s his junior year; I just want him to enjoy being recruited, and soon enough he’ll make the decision, and we’ll go from there.”

Like he did when he chose Cass Tech as an incoming ninth-grader.

“It’s like he was saying he wants to create his own legacy,” said the elder Anderson. “By me going to King, he didn’t know anybody over at Cass, so he earned it himself. Nobody had any reason to show any favoritism, so it was all his hard work and effort.”

iPhone 11 may be a lot more popular than anyone expected

iPhone 11

Leading up to the iPhone 11 introduction at last week’s media event, there was a sense that this year’s iPhone lineup would be something of a stop-gap measure before the release of the iPhone 5G in 2020. To our pleasant surprise, however, the iPhone 11 is arguably one of the most exciting upgrades we’ve seen in years, thanks in large part to advanced camera technologies and impressive features like Night mode.

What’s more, Apple made the entry-level iPhone 11 a tad more affordable with a sticker price of $ 699, or $ 399 with an eligible trade-in. Taken together, demand for Apple’s iPhone 11 models appears to be much stronger than many initially anticipated.

Steven Soderbergh’s The Laundromat Does More Than Explain the Panama Papers—It’s a Rallying Cry Against Greed

The Laundromat, playing in competition at the Venice Film Festival and released by Netflix, begins as a seduction and ends as a manifesto. The switching of tracks shouldn’t work, and along the way the movie is sometimes a little too broad. But director Steven Soderbergh keeps the momentum going and then gracefully rounds the bend toward an end you didn’t see coming. Much of the movie is bitterly funny; some of it just amusingly droll. But the finale, a rallying cry that’s both galvanizing and wistful, is a wrap-up worth waiting for.

In the opening scene we’re introduced to two refined gents dressed in tuxedos, holding martini glasses aloft as they set out to explain the finer points of moving money around in order to hang onto it—and multiply it. Ramón (Antonio Banderas) and Jürgen (Gary Oldman) will be our guides to a world of greed and ruthlessness, and they’re dashing rogues. Sure, we know they’re bad—but they look so good.

The Laundromat is divided into sections, each identified by a maxim that helps explain how people like Ramón and Jürgen get so rich. In a chapter called “The Meek Are Screwed,” we meet a retirement-age couple of gentle averageness. Ellen (Meryl Streep, in a forthright, genial performance) and her husband (James Cromwell) are having a little holiday with friends on Lake George. They board a perfectly innocent-looking and surely 100 percent safe tourist boat, but there’s an accident. Ellen, a well-mannered sweetheart of a woman who rushes around in sneakers and a bucket hat, is forced to navigate the world of insurance settlements when she discovers that the check she’s been looking forward to, and badly needs, is dismally small. The company running the tours is also screwed: Its policy had been purchased from a scammer who’s currently in jail.

Meryl Streep stars in Steven Soderbergh's 'The Laundromat.'
Claudette Barius/Netflix—Claudette Barius/NetflixMeryl Streep stars in Steven Soderbergh’s ‘The Laundromat.’

Ellen, it turns out, isn’t completely meek, and she takes some initiative to learn all she can about this cheapskate insurance company. But she still can’t uncover the mystery of who, exactly, is benefiting from her misfortune. At one point, exhausted from sleeplessness and anxiety, she kneels in church to pray, thanking God for his blessings before she moves on to some anguishing questions about the divide between the rich and those who are struggling just to do OK: “What about those of us in the middle? We’re just falling farther and farther behind.”

Ramón and Jürgen know where Ellen’s money has gone, more or less. And they pop up again and again in the movie, spinning out a narrative that involves offshore investments, shell companies and all kinds of money laundering, some modes of which seem too bizarre to be true. If I were to tell you Ramón and Jürgen’s last names, you might recognize them, particularly if you have any knowledge of the 2016 Panama Papers scandal. But you don’t need to have any of that knowledge going in—Soderbergh lays the trail clearly, adding some Big Short-style graphics where they might be helpful.

Soderbergh isn’t always the most visually dynamic director, and here he’s more interested in crisp dialogue and the interplay between characters. But he’s enlisted a roster of delightful actors to play small but engaging roles (they include Sharon Stone, Matthias Schoenaerts and Jeffrey Wright), and Streep herself plays more roles than one—but to describe the others in any detail would spoil the effect. At one point Jürgen and Ramón explain, breezily, that the difference between tax evasion and tax avoidance is “as thin as a jailhouse wall.” They are, it turns out, the owners of a firm that helps clients avoid paying taxes, using methods that are in some cases technically legal, though once you know how they work, it’s a wonder how anyone who has benefited from them can sleep at night. There’s no cure for greed, and The Laundromat has no easy answers. But the only way to stop the spin cycle is to arm ourselves with some knowledge of how it works.

One More Reason Why Lincoln Is Better Than Trump: His Spies

Joshua Roberts/Reuters

The resignation of national intelligence director Dan Coats, who publicly contradicted Donald Trump’s rosy view of Russian and North Korean threats, opens old wounds. Trump has long publicly denigrated the spy community, which has infuriated seasoned espionage hands. But he isn’t the only chief executive who’s had run-ins with this nation’s intelligence apparatus. Go back to the Civil War and you find that spycraft posed a headache for another Republican president.

Although both Abraham Lincoln and Trump struggled to navigate the intelligence landscape during their presidencies, Lincoln ultimately succeeded in piecing together a makeshift information network, while Trump so far has failed, still relying too often on his gut instinct rather than empirical evidence from his spy agencies.

Granted it may be a stretch, but there are parallels between these two men. Trump assumed the presidency with no government experience. Lincoln had not much more seasoning—one term in the U.S. House of Representatives and four terms in the Illinois state legislature.

The Mate 30 Pro’s daring new design leaks again, and it’s so much sleeker than the Note 10

Mate 30 Pro vs. Galaxy Note 10

Huawei is widely expected to unveil a new flagship handset in October, regardless of what happens with Trump’s ban. That handset is the Mate 30 Pro, part of the Mate 30 series that will probably include three different phones, just like last year’s Mate 20 line. The Pro will be the best of them, packing higher-end specs and features, and it will compete directly against some of the new flagships launching in the second half of the year like the Galaxy Note 10, iPhone 11, and Pixel 4. The Mate 20 Pro was well ahead of many of its Android rivals when it comes to new features, and the Mate 30 Pro is also expected to bring exciting innovations. Chief among them is a refined design, which keeps getting leaked.

‘Queen Sugar’ Season 4, Episode 6: More Than You Know

This week’s edition of Queen Sugar had its good moments, but unfortunately tonight’s episode felt more like filler than a significant episode. Every relationship is being challenged in some way, but things slowed down this week.

Sex has definitely slowed down for Hollywood and Vi. Apparently Auntie Vi (Tina Lifford) is a world-class lover and lately, she’s not into it like she has been. Score one for Aunt Vi and for Queen Sugar for recognizing that mature women need – and want – make love, too.

When she goes to her doctor, she finds out that it’s not her lupus but when her doctor asks if she’s experienced any recent trauma, her interaction with Jimmy Dale (David Alan Grier) comes to mind. It may be that the stress of seeing him again after so many years has triggered a reaction Vi wasn’t anticipating.

Nova is still being ostracized from the family as her book continues to get accolades. She finds out that she’s on the short list of National Book Award nominees and she’s excited, but the triumph seems a little empty without family. Her former professor Octavia (Cree Summer) is enjoying her success as much as Nova is. In fact, she’s enjoying it a little too much. Nova has started to realize that maybe Octavia’s trying to steal a little bit of her shine.

Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe) and Darla (Bianca Lawson) are working together to make sure that Blue (Ethan Hutchinson) has the support he needs to process that Ralph Angel is not his biological father. He’s still so young that although he’s trying to understand, he’s still confused. So Darla and Ralph Angel are forced to spend some time together. We have no idea what happened to Ralph Angel’s potential new boo, but it seems for the time being that his priorities are his son and his ex.

As for Charley, she’s decided to run for City Council to stop the progress of a highway in St. Josephine’s. She has powerful enemies beyond the Landrys but that doesn’t stop her. She’s neva scared. But once she opens her campaign office, someone tries to discourage her by throwing a brick through her new campaign office window. Fortunately Romero (Walter Perez, Jr.) is there to support her and tell her that the resistance she’s facing should only make her more determined.

Micah is trying to get a conversation out of KeKe (Tanyell Waivers) but she’s really not feeling the new “Killmonger” Micah look or attitude. So he hits a dead-end there, but at least he’s not completely blocked. Let’s hope these two work it out.

Queen Sugar sometimes hits its stride and sometimes it’s just a little too precious with its characters. While we can appreciate the positive imagery of the show, there are times when the storyline needs to expand beyond its sometimes facile characterizations of relationships. People are messy and Queen Sugar seems afraid to explore it for fear of making its characters unsympathetic.

Interesting storylines – like Davis’s no longer a secret daughter and  Darla’s new man  – have been introduced and then dropped. Nova’s separation from the family means that she’s been outside the storylines involving them this season instead of being forced to deal directly with their anger about her book.

As much as Romero is a great guy,  delving into Black/Latino issues are a distraction from the main theme of the Bordelons vs. the Landrys and the struggles of Black farmers to retain their land in the face of legal and financial challenges. And let’s be clear, Charley and :Romero as a couple just have limited chemistry. As messy as Remy (Dondre Whitfield) could be, he had more chemistry with both sisters. His departure from the show might not have been the best idea. And focusing on Charley’s campaign means that less time is spent on her role as the owner of Queen Sugar, which seems a little premature as there was so much more to explore there.

Hopefully, Queen Sugar will speed up the action in the next episodes since there are only 13 this season. It would be nice if we saw the more intriguing storylines expanded on and had more room to examine the characters on the show a little more deeply.  While we do enjoy seeing beautiful Black people looking good and saying sweet words to each other, these storylines – and this family – deserve a little more life.

How Cricket Has Become More Than Just a Game For Hong Kong’s Filipina Domestic Helpers

It’s 7:00 a.m. and Cherry Octaviano’s workday is about to begin. There’s breakfast to be made—fruit, juice, sandwiches and eggs—and a round of cleaning to be done before she wakes everyone up. She dusts the study and sweeps the floors before gently getting the household out of bed.

Around the same time, in an apartment elsewhere in the city, Jennifer Alumbro is preparing school lunches before dropping the kids off at the bus stop. On her return, she gives the kitchen a quick wipe down before cleaning the bathroom.

This is what most mornings look like for Octaviano, 35, and Alumbro, 30, both Filipina domestic helpers in Hong Kong. But come Sunday, they turn their attention from spotless dishes and sparkling floors to batting practice and fielding strategies. It’s their weekly day off and they spend it doing something very few Filipinas do: playing cricket.

Alumbro and Octaviano are members of the SCC Divas, a female team made up entirely of migrant domestic helpers from the Philippines. It’s certainly the first such cricket team in Hong Kong. Quite probably, it’s the only one of its kind in the world.

It isn’t unusual that cricket is played in Hong Kongthe former British colony’s connection with the sport goes back to 1841. But it is interesting how the Divas have taken with such devotion to a sport that, until recently, was completely alien to them—and indeed to most people who did not grow up in one of the Commonwealth or former Commonwealth countries that are cricket’s heartlands, such as England, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Australia, South Africa, the West Indies, and New Zealand.

Cricket has never caught on in the Philippines, despite first being played in Manila in 1914. Until about 15 years ago, the game was only played socially, and haphazardly, by a smattering of expats from Commonwealth countries. Though there are now structured leagues supported by the Philippine Cricket Association in and around the capital Manila, the sport is still far from popular, especially with the Filipino population.

Not so in Hong Kong, where the Divas are helping cricket spread among the city’s Filipino workers. The game is proving to be a welcome diversion for a hardworking community for whom life is often difficult.

While most families in Hong Kong are law-abiding employers and often form warm relations with their helpers, emotional and sometimes physical abuse are occupational hazards. One of the most shocking instances was the 2013 case of a young Indonesian domestic worker, Erwiana Sulistyaningsih, who was starved and tortured by her employer for months. More common is the kind of pettiness that sees a helper’s pay docked for transgressions like using a heater.

Working and living conditions can be challenging, too. Since local laws deem that helpers must live with employers, they have little or no privacy and are constantly on call, working long, tiring days. Given the premium on space in Hong Kong’s overcrowded and exorbitantly priced housing market, many are forced to sleep in substandard conditions when the day’s chores are finally done—making their beds in bathrooms, on balconies, or under racks of drying clothes in corridors.

In these circumstances, cricket is more than just a sport for the helpers. It’s a ready-made family and cultivates a sense of pride. “People say we’re just cleaners and nannies,” Alumbro tells TIME. “We are doing our best to change that. We are more than that.”

In their own, small way the Divas are also part of a growing wave of women’s cricket. Women’s games now draw sizeable crowds and television viewers. One estimate suggests that close to 180 million people tuned in to the 2017 Women’s World Cup, with the 26,500 capacity crowd at London’s hallowed Lord’s cricket ground the largest ever for a women’s final.

‘We’d had enough of playing softball’

Team captain Josie Arimas was the driving force behind the Divas’ formation in 2017. Arimas, 50, a former softball player in the Philippines, was introduced to cricket in 2015 and spent two years playing with a Hong Kong team before deciding to form her own squad. She received enough interest from fellow Filipinas to go ahead with her plan.

“We’d had enough of playing softball; it was boring. Cricket was a new sport,” Arimas says.

She found an ally in Animesh Kulkarni, an Indian businessman and cricket fanatic, who brought the team under the aegis of his Subcont Cricket Club (SCC) and became its manager.

Kulkarni, 58, is one of the many South Asian expats around the world who help cricket grow. His love for the game, what he terms keeda (a colloquial Hindi term for an obsession), has seen him become a mainstay of the Hong Kong cricket scene since he moved to the city in the early 1990s.

“I had a stroke about 15 years ago and couldn’t move my left arm, but it’s that keeda that gave me the willpower to work to raise my hand for the umpire signals,” Kulkarni says.

Despite most of the team having never played cricket before, they quickly found their feet, bringing to cricket skills and athleticism honed in local softball and baseball leagues. Although many softball and baseball fans profess to be baffled by cricket’s rules, the sports have a great deal in common. They are all explosive games, full of tension, in which quiet moments are shattered by sudden bouts of frantic activity. Strategy, nuance and cunning are essential to victory, and an entire day’s play can hang on the subtle turn of a ball.

SCC Divas playing cricket
Kamakshi Ayyar The SCC Divas in action against a local cricket team at Po Kong Village Road Park, Hong Kong, on April 28, 2019

Coach Najeeb Amar, 48, who used to train the Hong Kong women’s team, tells TIME that he just needed to “fine-tune” the existing skills that the Divas had acquired elsewhere and adapt them to a new sport. But he has to work within the challenging schedules of his team, who have only one day off a week, usually a Sunday—and even then, demanding bosses can curtail the day at either end. Some employers insist that their helpers be home by a certain time. Others won’t let them out until a couple of chores have been done.

“They have to walk the dog before leaving home,” Octaviano says of some team members who find it tough to show up to 8:00 a.m. training.

The Divas face such circumstances with cheerful resilience. Their games at the Po Kong Village Road cricket ground are part sports fixture, part picnic, with loud conversations and laughter over trays of noodles and coolers filled with drinks. The bonds between them are evidently close. The players call their captain Ate Josie, using the Tagalog term for “older sister.”

The Divas give Alumbro something to look forward to during the domestic drudgery of the working week. “We might be bruised from our games, but on Monday we’re already discussing the next match,” she says, “Each game gives us the motivation to do better next time.”

Such motivation has seen them top Hong Kong’s Development League—a tournament for amateur women cricketers—two years running. That success in turn has generated enough interest among the migrant worker community for the establishment of a second team, the SCC Pinay.

Now they’re aiming to move up to more competitive leagues. In December some of the Divas also hope to take their talents back to the Philippines, where there are proposals to organize an international cricket series with a Philippines national women’s team competing against countries from the region. Kulkarni said some members of the Divas will likely be trying out for the national squad.

It’s a long way from worrying about clean countertops and laundry loads, and a big step for players who hadn’t heard of the sport until two years ago. Arimas is hopeful. “Maybe one day some of us can play for the Philippines,” she says.

Even if they don’t make the squad, each and every one of the Divas is already a winner. “I don’t play just for me,” says Alumbro, summing up the Divas’ ethos. “I play for all of us, because my victory is also their victory.”

Rihanna Earns More Money Selling Makeup Than Records

As previously reported, luxury brand group LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton has announced the launch of Fenty Maison, a new fashion house from singer and make-up mogul Rihanna.

The 31-year-old singer has made history for being the first woman to create an original brand at the famed luxury group. Fenty Maison is set to be a Paris-based collection of ready-to-wear, shoes and accessories, and is expected to debut in the spring of 2019, PEOPLE reports.

“Everybody knows Rihanna as a wonderful singer, but through our partnership at Fenty Beauty, I discovered a true entrepreneur, a real C.E.O. and a terrific leader,” LVMH’s chairman Bernard Arnault said in the statement. “She naturally finds her full place within LVMH. To support Rihanna to start up the Fenty Maison, we have built a talented and multicultural team supported by the Group resources. I am proud that LVMH is leading this venture and wish it will be a great success.”

With this latest venture, many fans fear she will now not have time to serve up some new music.

Blogger SandraRose writes:

The brand follows LVMH’s previous, lucrative Fenty Beauty makeup and perfume line that outperformed expectations and grossed over $ 562 million for the luxury brand.

The Fenty Beauty makeup line accounts for a significant slice of LVMH’s perfumes and cosmetics unit, which grossed over $ 6.85 billion last year.

With that level of growth and economic clout, you can see why Rihanna has no plans to go back into the studio.

Sources say Rihanna is officially done making music. Her makeup line is simply more lucrative and less physically demanding than recording and going out on tour.

Meanwhile, according to WWD sources, the Fenty Maison launch might coincide with the release of Rihanna’s ninth studio album.

After the success of their first collaborative project Fenty Beauty in 2017, Arnault said in a statement, “Everybody knows Rihanna as a wonderful singer, but through our partnership at Fenty Beauty, I discovered a true entrepreneur, a real C.E.O. and a terrific leader.”

He added, “She naturally finds her full place within LVMH. To support Rihanna to start up the Fenty Maison, we have built a talented and multicultural team supported by the Group resources.”

Millennials Will Work Longer Than Their Parents If They Fail to Do This

How long do you plan to be in the workforce? Does retirement sound like a distant dream? How much money would you like to have tucked away for retirement? If you’re a millennial who has no idea how much money you need to retire and when you plan to leave the workforce, your retirement date may be later than expected.

According to research conducted by Aon, 2 in 3 workers will not have enough saved to retire comfortably by age 67. While many baby boomers and Gen Xers will be able to retire in their late 60s, most millennials won’t be prepared for retirement until age 70 or later.

Reports show that nearly 40% of young adults believe saving for retirement can wait. “Many millennials just starting out may struggle to balance paying down debts and saving money, especially for retirement,” said Julie Wilson, head of research for Navient, in a press release that shared the findings of the study of 3,000 millennials aged 22 to 35.

RELATED: 7 BLACK MILLENNIAL FINANCIAL EXPERTS TO FOLLOW ON INSTAGRAM IN 2019

Instead of saving for retirement, millennials are prioritizing goals that bring instant gratification such as homeownership, paying down debt, building an emergency fund, and saving for a vacation.

All of these choices come with a cost—some more than others. If millennials continue to prolong their retirement strategy, they will be forced to stay in the workforce longer than their parents.

What’s the solution? A simple conversation. The grim retirement numbers alone won’t get millennials motivated about developing a strategy but a conversation with a friend, family member, financial coach, adviser, or retirement planner can be life-changing and put things into perspective.

The reluctance to talk about personal finances and retirement goals on a regular basis in the black community is putting us at risk of not being financially secure during retirement. Money can’t be a taboo topic anymore. It has to become the norm in order for us to reach the levels of financial independence we hope to achieve.

In order to adequately plan for retirement, you need to know how much you should contribute, the best way to allocate your retirement funds, and the best strategies to meet your desired lifestyle goals. Sitting down with a finance or retirement professional can bring some clarity to one of the most important decisions you have to make during your lifetime.

“The generic default of a 3% contribution rate for retirement, used by many employers, is woefully insufficient and ill-fitting for most American households,” reports Stephen Wendel, Morningstar’s head of Behavioral Science at the 2018 Morningstar Investment Conference. “The right answer isn’t a new default: it’s a personalized analysis of what each household needs. Americans pay the price for not having advice tailored for their needs.”

In Wendel’s article, he points out that financial planning, investing, and investing behavior can increase an individual’s retirement readiness. Morningstar researchers note that all of these tools are most effective when more than one is implemented at the same time. If you are looking for the perfect combination of actions to take, personalized financial advice is essential to your success.

Most importantly, start taking action now. Or you’ll have to pay for it later by working longer.

Much More Than a Blow-Dry: Women Reveal How They Really Feel About Their Hair

Courtesy Rohina Hoffman

Neurologist-turned-photographer Rohina Hoffman knows the power of a hairdo.

At 7, her hair was chopped to a short “boy’s haircut,” and she was devastated. “The trauma of losing control of my identity has stayed with me my entire life,” Hoffman writes in the introduction to her book, Hair Stories.

In photographing and interviewing dozens of women about their own experiences with their hair, Hoffman discovered the seemingly endless roles hair plays—as a cloak of comfort, a statement of creativity, a link to faith, or a badge of honor.

More than the ‘baby blues’

Veronica Monroy was elated after the birth of her daughter. “She was beautiful, and I was happy, really happy,” she recalled.

But 2 months later, Veronica noticed a change. “I was really sad all the time, and I didn’t feel like getting dressed,” she said. “It really scared me.”

Adding to her unhappiness were feelings of shame and embarrassment.

Monroy turned to her doctor for help. She was diagnosed with perinatal depression and began seeing a therapist, participating in a support group for new moms, and taking medication. Soon, she began to feel like herself again.

“I’m very thankful for all the support I received from my therapist and my doctor,” she said. “Knowing that they really cared for me — that helped me a lot.”

Support for mom and baby

Twelve to 20% of mothers experience depression before or after the birth of a child, but many health care providers don’t screen for the condition.

“It affects not only the woman herself, in terms of her well-being and ability to function, but also the child,” said Tracy Flanagan, MD, director of women’s health for Kaiser Permanente in Northern California.

Through the Perinatal Depression Screening Program, all pregnant members are screened before and after their baby’s birth. If the woman is diagnosed with depression, her obstetrician connects her with treatment and support.

“Women in my support group go from feeling like, ‘There’s something really wrong with me — I’m defective’ to feeling like ‘I’m a capable mom who is providing for my baby and family in a positive way,’” said Cosette Taillac, LCSW, strategic leader for mental health and wellness.

New Study Shows Married Women Do More Housework Than Single Moms

One might assume having some assistance around the house may help moms have more time for work, rest or leisure, but unfortunately having a partner does not mean you have an extra set of hands to assist with chores.

A new study from sociologists at the University of Maryland, University of Texas, and University of Southern California found that married women end up doing more housework than single moms, Fortune reports.

Why? Put simply, men aren’t helping.

“Married mothers increase housework in part to meet expectations about home-cooked meals, clean clothes, and well-kept houses—behavior integral to contemporary definitions of appropriate behavior for wives and mothers,” authors Joanna Pepin, Liana C. Sayer, and Lynne M. Casper wrote in the study.

Even though people preach equality professionally, that sense of equal stake in the household hasn’t translated into our personal lives.

“Marriage remains a gendered institution that ratchets up the demand for housework and childcare through essentialist beliefs that women are naturally focused on home and hearth,” the authors write, leaving women drowning in housework over rest or sleep.

“The research is really showing that men are not necessarily contributing in ways that are bringing about equality in the home,” author Pepin of UT-Austin told Fortune.

It’s important to point out that sharing chores actually increases the sex lives and health of a couple’s relationship. A 2002 study found that “a division of household labor perceived to be fair ensures that partners feel respected while carrying out the tasks of daily life,” family ecology professor at the University of Alberta, Matt Johnson, explained in the research.

“Completing housework may or may not be enjoyable, but knowing that a partner is pulling his weight prevents anger and bitterness, creating more fertile ground in which a (satisfying) sexual encounter may occur.”

So it’s not just about who is in the house, it’s the contributions of that partner that help to create a healthy family environment, otherwise, your mate is just another person to take care of.

“Our findings suggest that it is not just an additional pair of hands that is important,” the authors write, “To whom those hands belong also matters.”

Joe Biden Raised More First-Day Contributions Than All His Democratic Rivals

Joe Biden raised $ 6.3 million in the 24 hours since announcing his presidential campaign, a haul that topped all of his rivals in the Democratic race.

The former vice president’s campaign said Friday that more than 96,000 people sent money with an average contribution amount of $ 41. Of those who contributed online, 97 percent gave less than $ 200.

Most of the top candidates have been touting their first-day contributions as a show of their support from voters. The biggest previous totals came from former Texas congressman Beto O’Rourke, who totaled $ 6.1 million, and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, who took in $ 5.9 million.

After months of preparation and speculation, Biden formally announced his campaign Thursday and started out with a lead in most polls, followed closely by Sanders. First-day fundraising has become an important benchmark for the top tier candidates. Biden’s total may help quiet doubters in the party who questioned his ability to raise money and sustain his front-runner status over the 10 months until the first actual nominating contest.

Biden’s haul is all earmarked for the nomination race, according to TJ Ducklo, a spokesman for the campaign. Ducklo tweeted that 65,000 donations were new donors whose names were not on the campaign’s existing email lists. Within 90 minutes of announcing his candidacy by video, the campaign received contributions from all 50 states, Ducklo said.

Like most of his rivals, Biden took a pledge to refuse contributions from corporate political action committees and registered lobbyists. Sanders and Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren have vowed not to attend big-dollar fundraisers where donors who can write bigger checks have a chance to interact directly with candidates.

Philadelphia Fundraiser

Biden, 76, attended a fundraiser in Philadelphia Thursday night hosted by Comcast Corp. executive David Cohen and his wife Rhonda, and has an event planned on May 8 in Los Angeles with former Google chairman Eric Schmidt, movie mogul Jeffrey Katzenberg and Rufus Gifford, who served as finance director of former President Barack Obama’s reelection campaign, among the organizers.

But with such a wide field vying for support among donors, both big and small, it could be difficult for Biden to build the kind of financial advantage that normally goes with being an early front-runner. Many big donors are waiting for the field to eventually shrink before committing to a candidate.

Others have opened their checkbooks to multiple candidates. Katzenberg, among the earliest Hollywood heavyweights to back Obama in 2007, gave $ 2,800 apiece to three White House hopefuls during the first quarter of the year: Senators Kamala Harris of California, Cory Booker of New Jersey and Kirsten Gillibrand of New York. Schmidt donated $ 2,800 to Booker.

Biden’s late entry into the race has given his opponents a leg-up in assembling the war chests they’ll need heading into 2020’s compressed primary schedule, with just four weeks separating the Iowa caucuses in early February and the multi-state Super Tuesday contests.

Eight candidates reported to the Federal Election Commission that they ended March with at least $ 6 million in the bank. Sanders topped the list with $ 15.7 million.

Simon Cowell mocked for being less likeable than David Williams as Britain’s Got Talent judges compete in Weird Crushes game behind the scenes

SIMON Cowell will learn a harsh truth that he’s not as likeable as co-star David Walliams during tonight’s Britain’s Got More Talent.

The BGT judges take a break from filming more show-stopping auditions to play the popular Weird Crushes card game, which features both Simon and David.

The Britain’s Got Talent judges are in hysterics as they play card game, Weird Crushes

The game ranks different male celebrities on their charisma, likeability, sex appeal, style, and fame.

While Simon outranks David on charisma by one point, he is defeated by a large margin on the likeability category.

Initially trying to bluff his way out of it by lying about his score, Simon reluctantly admits he was scored just two points, while David landed a much stronger four.

Co-stars Amanda Holden and Alesha Dixon laughed hysterically as the boys tried to prove who was king of the panel.

Simon is ranked at ‘2’ on the likeability scale, while David quadruples that score
Amanda Holden and Alesha Dixon can’t contain their laughter at the quirky game

Tonight’s episode of Britain’s Got Talent will see a knife-throwing act take aim at Simon Cowell, leaving judge Amanda Holden, 48, and the auditions audience gasping in shock.

Andrei admitted: “This was high stakes. It was more dangerous because I didn’t know what Simon would do.

“I know my partner. She knows not to be scared and not to move.

“But I didn’t know if Simon might move. I worried I might leave him seriously injured.

“I had small nerves. I’m a professional, I must be ready and keep my focus.”

Explaining why he took up the challenge Simon, 59, said: “I wanted to feel what it’s like. It is terrifying.”

Hurricane Michael was even more powerful than scientists initially thought

hurricane michael category 5

The science of tracking hurricanes has seen huge advancements in recent years, allowing forecasters to better predict paths and overall impact of the large storms before they actually reach land. Warning systems and preventative measures are getting better, but it’s an imperfect science, and even measuring the sheer power of a hurricane as it’s happening can be difficult.

In a new announcement from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Hurricane Michael, which made landfall in October of last year on Florida, has now been upgraded from a category 4 storm to a category 5. This makes the storm the first category 5 hurricane to make landfall in the United States since 1992’s Hurricane Andrew.

‘Game of Thrones’ does a lot more telling than showing in its season 8 premiere

Game of Thrones season 8 review

As was undoubtedly the case at countless offices (virtual or otherwise) around the world on Monday morning, the first thing my colleagues and I did when we got into work was talk about the Game of Thrones season 8 premiere. While all of us were glad to have the show back in our lives, some of us were less impressed with the first episode than others. So rather than keep all our thoughts to ourselves, we’ve decided to share them with you.

If you didn’t watch Winterfell — the first episode of season 8 — be warned that spoilers will follow. This is not going to be a detailed breakdown of the episode, but we’re not going to shy away from discussing details when necessary. If you’ve already seen the episode, then forget about this warning, and feel free to read on.
