How much should you tip post-quarantine? Here’s why you might want to consider giving a little extra

How much should you tip post-quarantine? Here’s why you might want to consider giving a little extra

How much should you tip post-quarantine? Here’s why you might want to consider giving a little extra

In the U.S., we give service professionals—from our hairdressers to waiters and waitresses—a few extra dollars as a tip to show our satisfaction for a job well done. But what you might not realize is that those few bucks are actually a portion of those workers’ salaries. And especially with the effects of coronavirus (COVID-19) disproportionately affecting several of those service jobs, receiving tips could be important now more than ever. As quarantine measures are slowly being eased in several states across America, how much should you tip? We asked a few financial experts to weigh in.

Why do we tip?

You might say, “Why do I have to tip someone just for doing their job?” But that would be to misunderstand the point of tipping altogether. Tipping has been traditionally used in service-type industries where the wages are smaller. Oftentimes, this means the tipped employees make minuscule hourly wages under the promise that tips will make up the bulk of their earnings.

For a bit of perspective, the federal minimum cash wage for tipped employees is just $ 2.13, according to the Department of Labor, while the federal minimum wage for non-tipped, nonexempt employees is $ 7.25 per hour. Of course, each state has different wage policies, and thankfully, many of them pay above this. But for the vast majority of servers, bartenders, and even beauticians in America, tips make up a substantial part of their income.

Should I tip more post-quarantine?

It’s no secret that service industries—especially those that depend on customer-provider interactions or involve the congregation of large numbers of people—are those that have been hit the hardest during coronavirus. According to a study conducted by Pew Research, those people who work in the food services and drinking places sectors—along with those in personal services (i.e. hairdressers, nail technicians, dry cleaners, etc.)—are some of those at the highest risk of losing their jobs, especially as more and more brick-and-mortar shops are forced to close due to the financial strain of temporarily closing for the last few months. This is in addition to hundreds of thousands of food and accommodation businesses that have already taken a hit and had longstanding lower-than-average earnings.

So, as things start to slowly open up, and you’ve finally scored that long-awaited appointment with your hairdresser or decided to dine al-fresco at your favorite local spot, experts say you just might want to consider upping your standard tip amount.

“If you can afford it, I would consider tipping people extra right now, particularly those like delivery people who are out there on the front lines so you can stay at home,” suggests personal finance expert and managing editor of The Money Manual, Leah Bourne. Because many people are experiencing financial hardship right now, she says the tip doesn’t have to be double or triple what you’d usually give, either. She suggests you consider upping your tip normal amount by five percent. So, if you normally provide 10 percent, do 15 percent. Or if you normally do 15 percent do 20 percent, and so on.

According to Bourne, “You can assume a couple of things: first, because these folks are working, they’re forgoing unemployment insurance. And second, the volume [of business] is down, and because these people depend on tips for a large portion of their income, that means they’re going to be really impacted.”

Additionally, there might be one small way you can help the economy get back on its feet.

“From a financial point of view, tipping is and will always be essential to the economy,” says Ethan Taub, CEO of the financial site Loanry. He says that while it may only seem like a few bucks here and there, it adds up. “What most food workers can’t get [from] their job, they can get in tips, which they put back into the economy, and the world keeps turning,” he says. “Tipping more than you did before will mean a great deal to that worker and restaurant, but also to the economy itself. I think that tips should be mandatory in essential businesses like this, but for now, we can just continue to contribute as much as we can.”

RHONY’s Sonja Morgan drops pants to pee in middle of a corn maze before screaming ‘all I want is sex’ after day drinking

RHONY’s Sonja Morgan peed in the middle of a public corn maze before she later screamed the “only thing” she wants is sex after a long day of drinking.

The 56-year-old reality star dropped her pants and decided to “fertilize” the vegetables after she couldn’t wait to use the bathroom.

The women left the city for a day of apple picking at Weed Orchards and Winery in upstate New York where they consumed a large amount of alcohol.

Housewives co-star Luann de Lesseps, 54, planned the outing after she had her first drink since her 2017 arrest during last week’s episode.

The Countess tricked the girls into going on a wagon ride to lighten the mood after a tense fight between Tinsley Mortimer, 44, and Dorinda Medley.

Luann very enthusiastically brought her cast mates to the corn maze where the group split up for the activity.

One minute later, Tinsley and Luann screamed after they discovered Sonja, 56, squatting on the corn with her jeans and underwear wrapped around her ankles.

“No! This is horrible,” they yelled at the surprising sight.

Leah McSweeney, 37, joined Sonja and claimed the pair were “fertilizing” the vegetables.

After the intoxicated fashion designer stayed on the ground for a minute, she struggled to stand back up.

Once up, she began grinding her butt on a piece of the corn stalk.

Tinsley pulled some plant leaves to offer as toilet paper, which Sonja gladly accepted before she wiped in front of her friends.

In a confessional, Leah said the the Bravo star’s dueling personalities “would not like” each other.

“There’s definitely two Sonja’s. There is Mrs. Morgan, the one who lives on the Upper East Side that hates tattoos and just talks about old money.

“And then there’s turn up Sonja, which I love. I have a feeling that if Mrs. Morgan and turn up Sonja met they wouldn’t like each other,” she joked.

Once inside, the RHONY stars have a wine and cheese break but despite trying to keep a low profile, Sonja could not stop talking about sex.

As she cut a piece of blue cheese, she passionately said: “I’m so in love with this right now… and it makes your p***y wetter.”

Leah then said she “doesn’t even want to have sex right now” and Sonja was baffled.

She then raised her arms straight up and loudly yelled: “You don’t want to have sex?! The only thing I want is sex!”

An embarrassed looking Luann then concluded it was “time for the group to go home.”

Last month, Sonja revealed to Andy Cohen on WWHL that she has had threesomes in the past.

The Bravo boss also asked: “Has Sonja ever joined the Mile High Club?”

Mom of one Sonja agreed by nodding her head.

The TV personality has always been open about her sexuality – and admitted in season seven she enjoys kissing people of all genders.

Want to pretend you’re on the Moon? Just move to Montana

moon rocks in montana

  • Moonrock analogs can be found right here on Earth, and Montana is now a major source of simulated lunar material for NASA.
  • The mineral anorthosite is common on the Moon, but more difficult to find here on Earth.

The Moon is awesome. I mean, at least from afar it certainly seems pretty cool. You could stare at high-resolution photos of the Moon for hours and never really get bored, there’s just so much to take in. We can’t live on the Moon (yet), of course, but once the option is available I’m sure there are plenty of people who would love to try.

In the meantime, if you’re searching for a place on Earth that bears a resemblance to the lunar surface, NASA says Montana is a good place to look.

Makeup-Free Celebrities Want to Prove They’re Just Like Us. They’re Not.

How are you doing in isolation? Hopefully coping as well as Heidi Klum is, swaddled in a knitted beanie and scarf, clutching a heart-shaped rock, eyes peacefully closed, face unadorned with makeup.

Or maybe you’re a Julianne Moore, doing virtual yoga at home, cheeks flushed not by blush but a recent workout. You have many famous avatars to choose from: Zoe Kravitz, Katy Perry, Vanessa Williams, Bella Hadid, Kaia Gerber, and her mother Cindy Crawford

While defending her ex, Governor Andrew Cuomo, from internet rumors about his supposed nipple-piercing (yes, quarantine has broken all of our brains), Sandra Lee wore what appeared to be very comfortable Fair Isle knit pajamas, and not a lick of foundation, brown roots peeking from the top of her blonde hair dye. Super “real,” very normal, just like us at home on our couches—if you ignore her mammoth living room behind her, complete with a gilded full length mirror and life-size marble statue of a female form.

During an Instagram Live, the Canada native was asked if she would want to be on the show full-time and her answer might not be what you expected.

Sam revealed that she has no interested in getting a peach.

“I kind of love being the friend to the show it’s really the best of both worlds,” she said. “I have autonomy, no one can tell me like when you have to show up for what, I can still travel so I kind of like it. I think that doesn’t designate with a lot of people.”

Sam added that even though she’s a part-time cast member, she has just as much fun as everyone else.

I get to host trips. I get travel and when I have to work I can go ‘sorry guys I can’t show up for eight hours of taping today because I have to work’.”

For those who don’t know,  Sam is an entrepreneur in the tech industry and is the Director of Partnerships at TechSquare Labs and Co-lead of Ascend Atlanta. She told us back in January that she prioritizes balancing every aspect of her life and taking the time to wind down when she needs to, which she couldn’t do as a full blown cast member of “RHOA.”

“We just have to give ourselves the grace to just take down time when we need it, to recognize when our spirit is low, when we’re juggling too much and allow those leaves to drop because you can’t really hold them up all the time and I think it’s purely allowing yourself the grace to, ‘Ok, I can’t do it all today, but tomorrow is another day’.”

Dr. Anthony Fauci: I Don’t Want to ‘Embarrass’ Trump

Jonathan Ernst

In a new interview with New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd, Dr. Anthony Fauci opened up about the unique challenges of serving on President Donald Trump’s coronavirus task force. The director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases called it “kind of funny but understandable that people said, ‘What the hell’s the matter with Fauci?’ because I had been walking a fine line.”

“I’ve been telling the president things he doesn’t want to hear. I have publicly had to say something different with what he states,” he continued, explaining that he’s engaged in “risky business” but insisting that Trump is not and has not been “pissed off” at him to date.

“I don’t want to embarrass him,” Fauci added. “I don’t want to act like a tough guy, like I stood up to the president. I just want to get the facts out. And instead of saying, ‘You’re wrong,’ all you need to do is continually talk about what the data are and what the evidence is. And he gets that. He’s a smart guy. He’s not a dummy. So he doesn’t take it—certainly up to now—he doesn’t take it in a way that I’m confronting him in any way. He takes it in a good way.”

Why Does Everyone Want to Wear Big ’80s Blazers Now?

Getty

With his go-to outfit being a sweater vest and high-waist trousers, Harry Styles seems to enjoy dressing as if he were an aging French Resistance hero turned kindly grandmother. The singer added something different last week, while performing on the Today show. Along with eggplant-colored pants, a denim shirt, and polka-dot tie, Styles slipped on an oversized salmon blazer.

A generous, but dated, interpretation of the sports coat could say it’s reminiscent of Don Johnson in Miami Vice. It also looks like something my former high school chemistry teacher who took too much acid in the ’70s would wear. Others might see it as a gateway coat to the gargantuan one that famously adorned David Byrne in Stop Making Sense

However you choose to see it, chances are you’ve spotted a lot of those blazers recently. More than a few celebrities cannot resist the charms of a big, throw-it-on-and-go blazer. After all, in a Fashion Month plagued with fears of contagion, what better way to quarantine yourself than through a hearty layer of wool or flannel?

‘I Don’t Want to Hear It!’ Victoria Is Blindsided When Peter Sends Her Home

It’s the final countdown! Ahead of the Bachelor: Women Tell All special on Monday, March 2, Peter Weber had to choose his final 2 and send one woman home.

Following last week’s cliffhanger, Madison Prewett walked away as Peter, 28, begged her to stay. However, after he revealed he was intimate during his fantasy suite dates, she didn’t think she could continue. Meanwhile, Hannah Ann Sluss and Victoria Fuller weren’t thrilled that she would have given him an ultimatum.

Madison, 23, arrived late to the rose ceremony and admitted to Chris Harrison that she was confused after their last date. “I was falling in love with him and then last night happened, and now I don’t really know,” she said.

Peter gave his first rose to Hannah Ann, 23, then chose Madison for the second. Through tears, he asked if she’d accept his rose. She paused but ultimately said “Yeah.” He then asked, “You sure?” but she reassured him as they hugged.

The pilot then had to say goodbye to Victoria, 25. Before walking her to the car, the pair sat down and he tried to explain his choice.

“I just want you to know how real everything was for me. I swear to God, Victoria. And I was falling in love with you,” he said. “I just know that my heart is further along with the two other girls.”

When the Virginia native told him she felt stupid, he told her she shouldn’t. “You really put your heart out there,” he said. She was quick to respond: “I know and I don’t want to hear it. Truly, I don’t. I get it. I don’t know what to say. It is what it is.”

While in the car, Victoria started to cry and admitted she just wanted to find love: “Isn’t that what anyone’s hoping for?”

Peter then went back to Hannah Ann and Madison. When they raised their champagne glasses, Madison said, “Here’s to seeing if love can conquer all.”

While viewers will have to wait until next week’s two-night finale to find out who Peter chooses, the Women Tell All special gave Victoria a chance to talk to her ex again. When they came face to face this time, she was in much better spirits.

“I just want to say thank you just for how patient you were with me this whole entire season,” she said to Peter. “That means so much. Watching back, it’s like, ‘How is he dealing with me?’”

Victoria also apologized. “I put you through hell and you didn’t always deserve it,” she said with a giggle. Overall, they were in a good place and agreed they were able to grow from the experience.

“I’m just glad there’s no animosity because I adore you and the love that was there was real to me,” she said. “I know I’ve learned so much from you and our relationship and I’ll carry that into my next relationship.”

The Bachelor finale kicks off on ABC Monday, March 9, at 8 p.m. ET.

Can AOC Inspire Female 2020 Candidates to Dress How They Damn Well Want?

Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast/Getty

On Wednesday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) appeared on The View in a shiny $ 580 dress from Rickie Freeman. It was, even by nonpartisan standards, a great look. Yet, as the New York Post reported, conservatives leapt to predictably criticize Ocasio-Cortez about the outfit.

Ocasio-Cortez responded to the Post and her critics via an excellent tweet: “Yep! I rent, borrow, and thrift my clothes. (It’s also environmentally sustainable!) The Post is just mad that you can look good fighting for working families. Sequins are a great accessory to universal healthcare, don’t you agree?”

Just a day before AOC stopped by ABC studios, the New York women’s workwear company M.M. LaFleur announced in an email that it would provide free outfits to any female candidate running for office in 2020— “whether it be for the House of Representatives or your town council.”

I ended up with a massive bill for a plastic surgeon I didn’t want

Chris Pratt and Tom Holland Want to Start an Avengers Cast D&D Party

Tom Holland has revealed that he and Chris Pratt have discussed setting up an Avengers cast Dungeons & Dragons session, redefining what it means to assemble.

Speaking to IGN at Disney Pixar’s Onward World Premiere, Holland was asked if he has ever played D&D before. While he never has, he did gave fans of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes a reason to cheer.

“I haven’t, no, but Chris and I have been talking about setting up an Avengers D&D session,” Holland said. “Which would be amazing. We actually want to like film it, because it would be really fun. Not livestream it, because I don’t do…is this live? It is live! Oh ok, I’m really stressed now.”

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/08/12/the-mcus-infinity-saga-ranked”]

An Avengers D&D session with Holland, Pratt, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, and many more could be something spectacular if done right.

It could allow our favorite Marvel movie characters no longer with us to have one more story, it could allow for our heroes to explore some of the abandoned plot threads in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or it could simply allow us to once again see the Avengers sitting around a table eating shawarma.

While it may focus on something completely out of the MCU, it could be fun to get a different perspective from our favorite actors, one that could be in a similar fashion to the upcoming Marvel’s What If…? series coming to Disney+.

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=every-plot-thread-the-mcu-abandoned&captions=true”]

Alongside the D&D talk, Holland also discussed how the upcoming Uncharted film will take inspiration from Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and will have a “global” scope.

Want to be an astronaut? NASA wants your application

astronaut application

NASA has increasingly relied on high-tech machines like orbiters, rovers, and landers to conduct much of its research in space. However, that doesn’t mean that astronauts aren’t needed, and with a renewed interest in sending humans back to the Moon and then eventually to Mars, the space agency needs all the able-bodied space explorers it can get.

With that in mind, NASA is once again putting out the call for a new batch of astronaut applicants, and you could be one of them. The requirements are, well, pretty strict, but what else would you expect from a group that sends humans into space?
